“Immerse yourself in a mythic world, and become a hero in the world's first virtual reality MMORPG!
The inhabitants of primal Sylvetica have been driven underground by dark forces and wild magic. Play alone, or with others, and let your actions sculpt the world!

Whether you choose the oath of a warrior, the road of an explorer, or the simple life of a merchant, you'll take part in ever-changing quests and make your mark on the evolving expanses above. And with the Broken Sky game engine, you'll be a part of every minute of the action.

So, what are you waiting for?”

– Broken Sky Online package insert

It's the first day of spring break, and you'll be stuck here at university all week.

Not that you're complaining, that is.

Your folks back at home are on vacation—probably some gross second honeymoon-type thing that you don't want to think too deep into—and since they're the only family members you care for, you elected to stay at your apartment for the week. Historically, you've been able to manage for longer periods than that without social interaction; if things have somehow changed, though, your roommate is here for the week as well, and you know of at least a handful of acquaintances who are either sticking it out on campus or just live locally.

> [[ 1/3 ]]
>>
>>37646059

Before your parents left, they jokingly warned you not to party too hard. You grin a bit and chuckle at the thought, as the YouTube video you're watching on your headgear is abruptly stopped by a taskbar notice. “Installation Complete”.

Broken Sky Online is your date for the week, and nothing's going to separate the two of you.

Barring hunger, thirst, and of course, sudden death, anyway.

You went ahead and picked up a physical copy while you were out; the shop was on the way back to your place, and the developer's website seemed a bit... difficult to navigate, though it was a bit of a late night when you tried. The game's brand new, and there aren't many major reviews yet, but it's supposed to be the most immersive virtual reality experience to-date, circumventing some of the headgear's hardware limitations to give players a closer cut of the action. From what you've heard online, it's “intense”. It damn well better be, for fifteen bucks a month.

Your rig is already top-of-the-line, too. It stands to reason that the experience will be that much better.

You launch the game; a patcher application appears briefly to re-check the installation, then closes.

> [[ Calibrating, please wait... ]]

There's an intrusive buzzing in your ears, and your muscles twitch instinctively. Then, your vision goes dark.

There's an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach, or where your stomach should be.

You are shapeless, a ghost in a sun-lit meadow, knee-height grass stretching to the horizon in all directions. The sunlight is warm, and the wind is cold. You can feel it cross over your body, or cross /through/ where your body should be.

It's beautiful. This feels real, and you're not sure how. Hell, you're not even sure if the settings are maxed.

As you attempt to raise a hand, a ping sounds, the cursor of a user interface that you'd somehow glanced over in your shock moving to indicate selection choices. Even menu navigation is going to take some getting used to. It looks like there's a selection of classes for you to pick from...

> [[ Choose your Primary Archetype ]]
* Brawler: Brawlers specialize in close combat. They are masters of all melee weapons, as well as unarmed fighting. A Brawler is capable of absorbing damage, and can move around the battlefield rapidly and unpredictably.
* Gunner: Gunners specialize in ranged combat. Though they have weak defenses, they can attack from far away, acquiring skills to quickly disengage from combat, acrobatically navigate environments, and move unseen.
* Artificer: Artificers are named for their ability to infuse weapons and armor with energy. They are a supportive archetype that can harness elemental abilities, as well as make powerful equipment to be used by themselves or others.
* Technician: The Technician is a supportive archetype that can create a variety of machines to serve in and out of combat. Dedicated Technicians can maximize the effectiveness of their abilities by choosing from one of a number of specializations.
* Explorer: The Explorer is a supportive archetype with the tools for survival. Explorers are not cut out for direct combat, but are capable of moving rapidly and evading danger, gradually gaining skills that will be useful in pioneering and mapping new territories.

For our subarchetype, would Artificer or Technician be better for a technoknight feel? I'm assuming Tech.

As you navigate back up to the Brawler archetype, you notice each of the classes are accompanied by a short video. The Artificer and Tech look pretty cool. You see the former wielding an elementally-charged staff, preparing to cast some sort of spell, while the latter is shown in multiple environments; he's commanding a couple of spherical droids in one, and darting about in a crude exoskeleton in another.

If you're choosing your 'primary archetype', it stands to reason you'll be able to get another one sometime. You think it'll be one of those two; you bet you could make a damn cool technoknight.

What else? You move up to the Brawler; there's a shot of a girl with wild hair, wearing a leather harness and carrying a sword twice her size in bandaged hands, sprinting along the back of an enormous winged creature, swinging the weapon vertically as the beast begins to take flight, and bringing it down with a visible wave of force that reverberates through the environment.

If you had eyes, they'd be widening. Your real ones probably are, behind your glasses; you twitch instinctively, and the game interprets this as a confirmation.

> [[ Primary Archetype Selected: Are you sure? ]]

Oh, hell yeah.

> [[ 1/2 ]]
>>
>>37646750

As you make the selection, you suddenly feel somehow more detached from yourself as your field of vision is pulled outward and the camera swivels. It's a generic human form, in pretty typical-looking starter equipment: a close-fitting leather jerkin that you notice is a little more low-cut on the female model than the male as you switch back and forth, baggy cloth pants, and a pair of heavy-looking boots.

> Male
> Female

The appearance options are pretty in-depth, and a groan echoes from within you. Character creation always takes you forever. The game notes that appearances are cosmetic, and as you adjust your character's dimensions, you quickly discover there's pretty reasonable maximum and minimum bounds—but still, a near-limitless amount of space to stand out.

You settle for a male avatar—just an inch or so taller than the default, but toned and strong-looking. Relatively muscular, with defined features, brown eyes, a deep tan, and a full head of hair, a sun-baked sandy blonde. It's cut close, but just long enough to lick about a bit in the wind; you don't want to look dramatic, but in this moment, it seems nice.

Then, there's an abrupt sensation of air rushing into your lungs—a breath of life. The camera swivels back around and you embody your hero.

The air smells fresh. You glance down at a pair of hands, flexing digits much stronger than your own. You can feel the relief of knuckles cracking, feel the bite of fingernails against your palm as you close a fist, and can listen for the sandpapery sound of an index finger against a thumb.

You take a few steps, off of a circular stone pedestal and into the meadow proper. It's easy to move, and you feel light; you wonder how high you can jump here.

You pause. It doesn't look like there's any way to key in a name. You wonder how to do so, then, you speak in a voice befitting of your avatar. It's a bit jarring; you start a bit, halfway through the word, but manage to finish it.

“Ascheritte.”

> [[ Welcome: Ascheritte ]]

“Lovely.” Enthused by your new self, you give a hearty chuckle, and push forward into the meadow, eager to explore. Your movements become sluggish, though; you feel a weight impressed upon you, as the sky grows dark, and the ground begins to shake.

As the sun begins to sink over the horizon, green threads of light from the earth reach upward into the darkening sky. You hear a piercing howl, of some unknown creature; a many-mouthed silhouette rises in the distant sky, directing its cries toward you. You're engulfed, at once, in a column of blaring sound, an aggressive droning that fills your ears to the exclusion of everything else.

On the brink of sensory overload, you feel another uneasy sensation in your stomach as the ground beneath your feet is torn open, and you plummet through darkness.

> [[ Underground: Averron City // Neutral Territory // PVP Enabled ]]

You lie supine on a stone bridge in a system of tunnels, dimly lit by rotating mechanical lights embedded in the cave's walls. Pulling yourself to your feet, you look below. More bridges like this one snake in and out of covered passageways; not too far away, though a ways below, you see the nexus, a massive outcropping that appears to be host to a number of buildings, and what looks like a number of people.

Below the snaking network of bridges is an abyss, filled with thick fog. Best watch your step!

You look above; the ceiling is too high to see. Pave the way to the overworld? That seems like an understatement—though whoever had a hand in this place isn't doing terrible so far. Where are you supposed to be going, then? It doesn't look like there's a starter quest here—perhaps at that town, or maybe you're supposed to find some starter monsters?

“Found one!” You hear a bratty-sounding voice from behind you, and wheel around in time to see an elfish kid—red hair, freckles, and an upturned nose—stalking towards you, a backpack over his shoulder, and a curved sword in either hand. The sound of footsteps on stone echoes through the cave system: too real. “Up here, guys! Newbie on the third strata! He's got a UI!”

“Uhm, I'm sorry, but you must have the wrong person.” You give him an inquisitive look. “Aren't we all supposed to have a user interface?”

“Ehehe... You are new.” He responds, stopping just about ten feet away. “There, on your waist. Go on, I'll let you look.”

There's a rectangular piece of technology hanging on your belt. You inspect yours, noting that the kid doesn't have one; it looks like you can interact with it via a dialog box, or just pick it up and see what it is yourself.

>> [[ Unique Identifier: Ascheritte ]]

Footsteps echo from below. He's got backup coming, and he continues speaking, grin growing wider as he brandishes his swords. “I bet you really thought you could be a part of something, you pay-to-win shitter.”

A hotshot, a typical ganker. You've never experienced anything like this, but you're not new to video games or the people that play them; he'll probably make a move soon. You're unarmed, with starter equipment; he doesn't look much better off, poorly armored, but with a pair of savage-looking blades.

Equipment should give him the advantage, but in a game where you control your character's movements directly, it makes sense that skill should be able to win out over equipment to a certain degree. You wonder how good you could be...

“Hold on just one second. What do you mean 'pay-to-win'?” You ask, raising your hands in a gesture of mock surrender. Might as well keep him talking.

“You heard me! You guys get all the best stuff in the game, and we're totally screwed! All because we fucked up once, or we don't want to fork over cash just to get stomped on! We can't even hold Celestial G...” As he begins to cough up those last words, his face reddens with anger, and his fists tremble, curled tightly around the hilts of his weapons.

He blinks.

Your body reacts directly to your reflexes, and you move much faster in this game than you could in real life. It feels like you cross the distance between the two of you before the elfish kid's eyes re-open all the way, keeping your body just out of reach of the slashing weapons as you move in, then, plant a high-speed jab dead-center in his face. There's a sickening crack, like the hit broke his nose, and you think you see blood.

“Aaagh—fuck!” He shouts and stumbles backwards, dropping a scimitar to clutch his face—which is definitely a little bit messed up from the hit, unsettlingly realistic.

> [[ The skill of Ascheritte's opponents will usually be considered reliable. But because he clearly has an advantage in this case, so will his... ]]

Stunned from your blow, he doesn't have a chance to protect himself from what comes next. You sprint forward again, almost gliding, in long strides scarcely in contact with the stone beneath you. Grabbing the scimitar as you pass over it, you bring it towards him with an underhanded strike.

> [[ Got: Scimitar (Unidentified) ]]

He manages a parry, but is still covering his face with his free hand. You fade back, bringing your new found weapon around for another hit, and it bites into his shoulder, cutting through newbie armor to flesh and blood beneath. He screams, tumbling backwards, and his other weapon clatters to the bridge as he falls in a crumpled, motionless heap.

> You defeated player.

Then, the sound of echoing footsteps comes to an abrupt stop. There's a flash of light from behind you, accompanied by a short, high-pitched noise. You feel a dull sensation in the back of your shoulder, and are shoved forward a bit like someone slugged you.

> [[ Ascheritte: 18 / 24 HP ]]

You spin on a heel, brandishing your weapon. Backup has arrived too late. There's another elfish looking kid who doesn't seem very happy about what you just did; his black hair is tied back in a braid, and he's carrying a hefty mining pick. A few steps behind him is a girl, who looks a little older and about a foot taller, a bit waifish, hair cut short. She's trembling a bit, and doesn't look confident, holding a handgun with a luminescent band running the length of the barrel; it looks like it's about warmed up for another shot.

“Yeah, right! It'll take us forever to meet up with him again!” The braided boy hefts his pick onto one shoulder, glaring at you. From a bag on his shoulder, he produces a beaten and cracked piece of technology. You recognize it, but the lit band that should run its width is dented and shut off. A broken Unique Identifier, like the one mounted on your waist. “We're just evening the scales. When we kill you, you'll lose your UI, and that's it—no contacts, no inventory, no name. You won't even get to find a Celestial Gem before you lose your chance.”

Is that it, then? Your Unique Identifier must be your menu of sorts—which means these lot have to carry their equipment themselves, keep in contact by normal or external means, and assign names themselves. And what's with the way they talk about Celestial Gems? The game said you use them to create equipment, or locations, but it's like there's something they're not telling you.

You grit your teeth. It's strange, to feel so imposing. Both of them shrink back as you continue barking, the girl looking noticeably worried. “So you lose this, when you die? Why not just make another character?”

“We can't. Every character you make afterward is like this, and you spawn somewhere different every time. There's no way to upgrade your account. Apparently, the status is even tracked by headgear.” She says. Her finger's trembling on the trigger, and you remain ready to dodge if necessary. “We're sorry about this. Most of us love this game, but it's not fair.”

With a minute movement, there's a flash and a screech; a bolt of pulsing light surges forth, presenting an iridescent display on the cavern walls as it closes the distance.

You pull yourself to one side to dodge the bolt, skidding to avoid falling into the abyss. It ricochets harmlessly off the ground behind you, kicking up a small divot of stone and grayish dust. You immediately go on the offensive, charging forward; the elfish kid swings his pick down, and you barely avoid the point as you come within range, feeling the tailwind and cold steel as you chest-bump the top of the weapon—you'll have to be more careful next time—to slash across its wielder's chest with your scimitar.

He yelps, hefting his weapon again with a quick hop backwards, and you stay close to him. The girl is charging up for another shot, and you try to keep him between the two of you; she doesn't seem like much of a sharpshooter, so you doubt she'll be able to hit you without a clear field of fire. You push forward, circling around the Explorer, weapon ready.

A man's voice from below, and this one sounds a bit warmer. “Heyo, kid! Hold on up there! I've got your back!”

Sounds like we can't fake having a broken UI..
it's something on our belt.
unless we can have two. And hide our main one.
Also, our name may be over our head with our UI, giving it away.
>>
>>37651090
Give me an IC reason as to why you think this should work, or better yet, why we should do it. We have nothing to gain from it. It's possible it's not even relevant, since, you know, this is an MMO and all.
>>
>>37651117
We don't know enough as of yet to give a reason for certain. If they are being treated poorly because of the lack of UI or are at an unfair disadvantage, as seems to be the case, that might be a reason.

Patience, then, strike.

You feel like a natural-born warrior. Another fading strike; you glide backwards, scimitar extended towards him as the mining pick passes through space you occupied just a second ago and embeds itself in the stone floor.

You can feel what this game is doing, you think. Some of it is priming your muscle memory, affording you a battle stance, the ability to throw a punch, and swing a weapon; some of it, though, is coming from something you didn't know you had in you. It feels good, to be able to move in a body that's light as a feather.

You stride forward, planting your foot on the back of the pick to use as a platform. The Explorer tries to heft it back again, but the influx of downward force causes his grip to slip, and you leap skyward, planting your feet into his chest, and as the two of you fall together, planting your scimitar into his chest.

He lands supine with a thud, and gurgles, coughing up blood and expelling a breath of air as you land firmly planted on his ribcage.

Down, but not out. You've gotta keep moving.

The girl's barely arm's length away from you, warming up another shot. She begins to pull the trigger, and you're already back up...

A steel ball with a pair of embedded lights sails out of the darkness of the nearby cave opening at about head-height, orbiting around you and smacking the girl clean in the side of the head with an echoing clang. Her eyes roll back, and falls to the ground, the handgun skidding a distance away.

The ball chirps excitedly, then abruptly shuts off, dropping to the ground and rolling toward the cave entrance.

“Damn, kid.” A man emerges—tall, in a fancy-looking cloth vest, with welding goggles pulled over a messy head of brown hair. He maneuvers the ball on top of his foot, kicking it back up into his hand, then saunters past you to stand over the knocked-out pair of nameless. You check his hip—there's an active UI, just like yours. “Are you, uh, sure you're a new player?”

What will you do?

I chose the brawler class, guess it really helps huh?
>>
>>37651383

“Yeah.” You sigh, lowering the scimitar to your side. You'd say that was pretty damn good, for your first fight, but the realism is still a bit unsettling; you think you'd like to avoid further combat until you know what's going on, seeing as you just loaded into this game. The two nameless are down for the count; the Explorer is coughing up blood, and it looks like his ribcage is a bit depressed from where you landed on it, meanwhile the girl is lying motionless a ways away. “Guess I didn't know my own strength. You know why these guys tried to kill me?”

“That's how most of the nameless act, I'm afraid. Luckily we've got the advantage in combat over them. Some of them can live long enough to gain a few levels, maybe farm an Artificed weapon. But they can't use Celestial equipment or artifacts. Without a UI, you can't even pick up the Gems to make 'em. The game's harder for them for plenty of other reasons, too.” You take a good look at him, as he speaks; his voice is stern, features rugged. He pauses. “Sorry, am I burying you in the terminology?”

“I think I've got most of it.” You respond. “So 'living' players have these chips, and some of them go after us...”

“Because they think it's unfair, or because they're just angry or have nothing to lose.”

“Ah, sorry, this is a bit overwhelming. You said the game is harder for them?” You ask. “Why's that?”

> [[ 1/2 ]]
>>
>>37651797

“I don't know the details. They've got restricted access to class abilities, and obviously, powerful equipment. But the game's also more real for them; I've heard they can't see their own remaining health, and are more susceptible to fall damage. They've got to manage contacts and names on their own, as the game doesn't assign them, and they've got to use bags for all of their equipment, inventory, and coins, whereas the 'Named' can just keep their stuff in their UI.” He says. There's a pause, then he kicks the earth with his heel, producing a bootknife. “Ah, there's one more thing; in here, the nameless feel more pain than we do. Isn't that right, kid?”

The Tech laughs as he delivers a swift kick to the Explorer's abdomen; the kid screams and convulses a bit in response. Another kick, and he twitches his last; the Tech rolls his body back and forth in the dirt for a few seconds, still chuckling quietly.

> Smith defeated player. [[ Assist: Ascheritte ]]

He opens his mouth, as if he's going to continue, then pauses to heft the mining pick off the ground, looking in the girl's direction. “You did most of the work. Do, uh, you want to get her, or should I?”

That's damn disturbing.

But you might as well go along with it. The Tech is giving you a look, like he's waiting on you to say something.

“I dunno.” You shrug. “I could use a pocket gunner. You got a shock collar or something?”

Smith raises an eyebrow at you, then grins, tossing the pick back to the ground. “Devious, kid... I like. Never thought of that one—it'd be work, though. I'd have to make it myself, and it'd take an actual Lightning element to get, y'know, a shock, without just killing 'em, and since that's a Tier 2 element... You know what, there's no way it would work. Not only would it be a ridiculous task to make, I don't even think this game would let me do that to someone.”

“Uh. I... guess we'll put her out of her misery, then.” You didn't expect him to put so much thought into the prospect; it was mostly a joke. How in-depth is this game's crafting system?

You make your way over to the downed girl, standing next to her for a moment. It feels wrong, but another swing of your scimitar depletes her remaining HP, cutting her down the ribcage.

> You defeated player. [[ Assist: Smith ]]

You don't waste time in rifling through her belongings. “You want anything?”

“I was just coming for the assist. Wouldn't want to cut in on your quarry, but I'd love to break down that gun for parts.” He shrugs. “It doesn't look like anything special, but you never know, right?”

Murderhobo is so goddamned boring. Part of the reason we go different ways in here is because there's so much of it at the real life table already.

And if we're proper murderhoboing, we should start by backstabbing that fucking techie. If we're going to murderhobo, we might as well fucking do it right and just kill everyone.
>>
>>37652570

Depends on if there's bonus damage for sneak attacks/flanking or what not. I didn't say it was a great idea, I just said it's the pure murderhobo idea.
>>
>>37652719
But being a pure murderhobo is daft. You can have varying degrees of murderhobriety you know and it's the middling levels that tend to be most rational. There's no good reason to kill this guy, unlike those players that ATTACKED us.
>>
>>37652672
No no, you see, the more people's UI's we take, the more Nameless we get, therefore more army, therefore more Nameless, etc.
It's a never-ending cycle, and as the lower class grows, their power strengthens as well. The only ones immune to the cycle would the extremely powerful.
Would it not be best to rule over the eventual 90% of the population rather than the top 10%?
>>
>>37652759
when the top 10% are pulling the strings..
You want to be with the top 10%..
>>
>>37652779
Then we kill or manipulate the top 10%.
Why the do you keep doing ellipses, it's annoying the fuck out of me. Stop.
>>
>>37652759
Also we don't know that there are many nameless.
Doesn't sound like a game where there would be a lot.
Considering once you're nameless you get sub par equips, limited choices. I am sure there are a lot of quitters.
>Some of them can live long enough to gain a few levels, maybe farm an Artificed weapon. But they can't use Celestial equipment or artifacts. Without a UI, you can't even pick up the Gems to make 'em.
Doesn't sound like a whole lot.
>>
>>37652821
bad habit.
>>
>>37652840
The majority of players would probably become nameless since when you die you lose your UI. Especially with players already hunting UI holders as they spawn.
>>
>>37652863
It's almost as bad as being a namefag
>>
>>37652865
>They're cross about logistics, it seems; losing the best 'benefits' because they made a mistake? What are they even on about, you wonder?
>“You heard me! You guys get all the best stuff in the game, and we're totally screwed! All because we fucked up once, or we don't want to fork over cash just to get stomped on! We can't even hold Celestial G...”
seems like it may be specific to one flaw in the game.
>>
>>37652350

The other Uis in the kid's backpack are all in about the same condition as the one he showed you. You're not sure if they have any use—if they can be broken down for parts by a Tech, or if he was just keeping them as trophies. Perhaps there's some sort of PK-ing black market, or it's just like collecting ears or some such.

You undress the dead nameless; more disturbing, the way you have to peel back the bloody fabric. The male avatar has a pair of flat-looking white underwear on, once everything's removed; the female is wearing similar shorts, modesty preserved elsewhere by what amounts to a tied cloth strap. You shake your head; you think it'd be /less/ explicit if it weren't even there.

Thankfully, everything they aren't actually wearing is a lot easier to deal with. Your UI just sort of absorbs the items; you can't describe how you're interfacing with them, just sort of tucking them away.

Which brings to mind the issue of storing containers in containers; the purist in you wonders why your UI didn't just explode, either from storing bags in it, or from storing other UIs in it.

Either way, it doesn't look like there's an explicit limit on your carrying capacity; despite that, there's no way this game would let you carry around infinite shit. If there's a limit, chances are you're going to hit it when doing so will cause you the largest inconvenience; you'll consider taking measures to avoid that, assuming you don't figure it out before it happens.

"Here." You pass Smith the handcaster. "Looks like junk, but I couldn't use it if I wanted to. Thanks for the assist."

"Yes, it was no problem."

"Any advice for me?" You ask, folding your arms.

"Averron City is that way. If you follow the caves in a single direction, you'll get there eventually, regardless of which route you take." He nods. "Also, remain calm when you arrive in town. There'll be plenty of nameless on the streets, but there's a neutrality policy in town enforced by a few of the guilds. You remember the header you saw when you dropped in, right? How it reads 'Neutral Territory'?"

> [[ Underground: Averron City // Neutral Territory // PVP Enabled ]]

You recall.

> [[ 2/3 ]]
>>
>>37652938

"Yeah." You nod. "What about it?"

"Guilds can take over places, claiming them as their own territory, but there's sort of a peace treaty between the top guilds so far to keep Averron and other starter locations neutral. We haven't forced expansion out too far in any one direction, but it's been confirmed online that there's multiple cities like this one in different branches of the underground." Smith says. "Where new players start, and where the nameless can spawn when they die."

"Are you heading back?" You ask.

"Negative. I'm overdue on my rounds. Rogue nameless farm monsters and players, and I farm them. It keeps their spirits low and my cred-chip fat, especially when they show up with something shiny. You should try it sometime." He gives a devilish grin, laughing for a bit. "I think you and I are a lot alike. If you'd fancy, you might stop by my workshop on the north end of town when I'm online, mm?"

Your UI pings.
