“Well, I’m gonna go walk around a bit before class starts.” You say, carefully cradling Terra.

Darius grins. “Try not to get your ass kicked again, eh?”

“Yeah, yeah.”

You walk out of the Infirmary hall, Shellshocker and Cobalt trailing behind you and make for the main part of campus.

The Academy is rather nice, consisting of several buildings placed inside an old park. There’s a surprising number of trees and bushes around. There are more people around now, all dressed in Cadet Uniforms. Pokemon abound as well. Several Taillow and Pidgey swarm through the trees and you note several Rattata crawling through the bushes.

The Sentinel Academy is nestled up next to the northern walls of the Plateau. Due to the limited amount of space on the Plateau itself, the Academy is actually inside the Sentinel Headquarters Compound. Cadets are generally restricted to the City and the Academy Campus. The SHQ Compound itself is restricted to Sentinels only.

Which is why you’re wondering who this man walking through one of the Campus side gates is. He’s clearly not a Sentinel as he’s dressed in civilian garb, albeit an extremely fancy one. His clothes are royal blue under a dark cape fastened with a silver chain and his hair is red and spiky. His eyes are extremely intense, burning with a strange fire.

“Excuse me?” You say while approaching the man. He seems vaguely familiar but you can’t place him.

{MASTER.} You “hear” from Cobalt. {THIS MAN IS DANGEROUS.}

The man turns to regard you with intense green eyes. He stands a full foot taller than you and you’re getting the sense he’s sizing you up. Not as an opponent, but as a meal.

“That’s my business.” He says in a husky, heavy voice. “Be on your way, boy.”

And with that he strides past you without a second glance.

You narrow your eyes and draw a Pokeball from your belt. The red beam hits Terra and her form dissolves into motes of light. The ball shrinks as you reattach it to your belt and with the same hand you draw your sword from your belt, holding it in ready position with both hands in front of you. Shellshocker, sensing your intent, steps in front of you and crouches low into a combat stance. Cobalt floats up directly behind you, energy crackling between its claws.

“Halt! Intruder!” You yell, hoping to get someone’s attention. That’s awfully unlikely though, considering how isolated this gate is from the rest of campus. In fact, you don’t see anyone else around.

The intruder stops and turns around. Earlier, he looked at you with indifference but now he looks genuinely annoyed. “Boy, you’re meddling in affairs above your station.” He sweeps his cloak back, revealing six pokeballs attached to his belt.

That REALLY catches your attention. A Trainer with the skill and experience to capture and control six Pokemon is someone far above your skill level to face in combat.

Of course he could be bluffing. But that’s not exactly something you believe. There’s something about this man that’s extremely intimidating. Something about his very nature. You swallow, your throat suddenly very dry.

Thankfully, you’re saved by timely intervention.

Both you and the intruder turn to look at the newcomer. He’s a stocky man, clad in the dark green fatigue of the Ranger Corps and the heavy armor pieces he’s wearing mark him as a part of the Vanguard Company. A heavy polearm with an unusual head is strung across his back. But what catches your attention is that you know him. Captain Andrews taught the basic Survival Course that all Cadets attended. Why would he want you to avoid fighting this intruder?

Said Intruder smiles upon seeing the Captain. “Ah, Donovan, good to see you.” Wait, he knows the Captain.

The Captain snaps off a salute to the Intruder. “Your Lordship, I apologize for the Cadets actions. I don’t think he knows who you are.”

Wait, “Your Lordship?” There’s only one person who’s addressed like that and that’s… Lance the Dragonmaster, the Champion of Kanto.

You take a deep breath and try not to piss yourself. This is Lance the Dragonmaster. The man who single handedly wiped out the entire Orange Island Pirate Fleet. He claimed the Title of Champion from Agatha Spiritbinder, who had held the title for close to a hundred years, and managed to win her loyalty enough to have her join his Elite Four.

And you tried to fight him.

You just barely keep control of your bladder. A calming presence touches upon your mind and you feel Cobalt siphon away some of your fear. Sometimes it’s really nice having a Psychic Pokemon around.

“'S-sorry, your Lordship.” You stutter as you lower your sword. ”I had thought you were an intruder and it was my duty to stop you.” You cast your eyes downward and bury your head.

The Dragonmaster laughs and places his hands on his hips. “If only your entire generation was as duty bound as you. I applaud your valor, just make sure you have the right target next time.”

“Y-yes, My lord.” A thought suddenly strikes you. “My lord, if I may ask, why did you not announce yourself? Surely you should have an escort of some kind.”

The Champion snorts. “I’m not one for fanfare. Hell, I barely even appear in public these days. Although seeing as you didn’t recognize me I should make some appearances in the future.”

The Captain nods, “I’m to escort you to him.” He looks at you. “Cadet Kane! Get going. You’ll be late for class at this rate.” He turns to leave.

The Dragonmaster gives you one last look and smiles before following the Captain.

On shaky legs, you almost fall over. If it wasn’t for Cobalt and Shellshocker, you likely would have. Shellshocker makes a warbling noise of concern while Cobalt asks {MASTER, ARE YOU ALRIGHT?}

You pat Cobalt on its head. “Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks Guys.”

Taking out your Pokeballs, you quickly collect Cobalt and Shellshocker and then jog off to class.

The Main Auditorium is another large building, but it’s clearly made with only humans in mind. It’s size is mainly due to needing to seat a large number of people. The seats are arranged in concentric circles that rise up to allow the audience to see the central stage. You see that most of your Class is here, milling about and chatting. You spy Darius sitting near the back of the hall, likely out of consideration for the people behind him. You also spy Katrina near the Front of the hall. There are plenty of other seats available as well though. You note an empty one next to a rather fat boy which surprises you. The Sentinel Academy has a tendency to whip even the most lazy recruit into shape and that someone could have remained fat is almost unthinkable. You also spy that Sentinel from before, leaning against a wall near the stage. You note that under his grey long coat he’s wearing a full suit of silvery armor.

You wince. “It was a mistake. I thought he was an intruder and threatened him to get him to stop. Captain Andrews intervened before Lance smeared me across the ground. I apologized and things were fine after that.”

Darius stares at you for a good while. “... You are an idiot. But a lucky one.”

You snort. “Don’t I know it.”

It looks like everything is quieting down now but there’s a few minutes left before the lecture begins.
