'We'll be ready in a short while, sir!' the marine says, saluting again.

'They're always so hard on salutes, these younglings are,' the Officer tsks from his seat, handing you the money.

'Why exactly are they 'so hard on saluting'?' you ask inquisitively, packing the notes into your ever-present bag.

'Well, I've got a reputation, you see, they used to call me 'the pirate killer',' he replies with a shake of his head. 'Oh, those were the days!'

Gods, this man might still be strong even though he's passed his prime!

'What's your name, anyway?' You ask, 'I figure I'll have to get to know the man that's going to be collecting my bounties!' you continue with a smile.

'Ah, a cocksure one, this one is!' The officer replies with a smile matching yours.

'I've got to be, I guess if I'm not then someone else will be, and where'll that leave me!?' You respond, smile stretching your lips.

'We're ready, sir!' you hear a shout from outside the Office.

'Ah well, that's them. Better skedaddle.' Mia speaks for the first time since entering the Collection Office.

'Alright', you say as you make your way out. 'Be seeing you, Lieutenant!' you call back.

'Sir!' the arrayed marines say in unison.

God, you could get used to being called that!

As you lead them down, you see -thankfully- that the barrel has only moves a couple more inches, and you can hear shouting from below as they hear your footsteps on the deck.

'SURRENDER OR DIE!' The marine in charge of the squad yells with authority. 'WE'VE GOT OVER TWENTY MEN HERE, DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND COME OUT!'

Just then, you hear a gunshot go off and see a white blinding light. Then, you know nothing.

When you come to, the first thing you notice is the pain. The searing, scorching pain of your body.
Gods, it feels like everything's on fire!

Your skin feels stretched, your entire body hurts, and it feels like you're running a fever throughout your whole body!

You slowly crack an eye open, quickly closing it after the pain of the lights shining on your eyes. Why does everything hurt?

'Doctor, it looks like this one's awake!' You hear a voice call out from your left.

'Ah is he now? Excellent. Perhaps he can tell us what happened down there.' An elderly sounding voice says, this time coming from your right.

'You awake, boy?' The elderly voice asks, closer than before.

You try to say something, but all you manage to do is croak, looks like your throat's damaged pretty badly.

'Come on, trainee, this man clearly needs some water!' The elderly man(?) barks at the voice you heard first. 'Why did you not think of that as soon as he woke up!?' He demands in a tone that brooks no argument.

'Y-yes doctor, right away!' The younger sounding voice squeals, and you hear a fast patter of footsteps going away from you.

'Now, I assume you can nod or shake your head in answer to my questions, can you?'

You try to not your affirmative, but the pain in your skull at even that small movement is enough to make you black out.

When you come to again, you're met with the sight of a young man, looking to be in his mid-teens, sitting at your bedside with a cup of water in his hands.

'Here, this is for you,' he says rather shakily, holding it to your mouth with trembling hands It seems like he's a bit scared of you.

You wonder what you possible could have done to scare a marine doctor-in-training?

No matter, that's something to ponder later, right now you have to know what happened.

'Wha-what happened?' You rasp, your throat stretching painfully on each syllable.

'Ah!' The trainee squeals, jumping out of his seat. 'I-I'll get the doctor!' He practically runs out of the room before he even finishes his sentence, leaving you alone for a good five minutes before he returns with an elderly man.

'You're finally able to speak, eh?' The doctor asks. you recognise this voice from when you first woke up. 'There was a large explosion, we think it was a bomb that exploded right in front of you and our men,' he says, 'They first thought it was you who set it up, claimed it was for some stupid reason or another. But myself and Lieutenant Thorpe spoke up for you, saying 'what kind of bloody moron blows up something in his own face? And after that, they stopped pointing the finger at you.' he continues, looking you dead in the eye. 'That's all, really. What else would you like to know?'

'My crewmate, Mia, how is she!?' you say as frantically as your raspy voice will allow you.

'Your friend has suffered burns, not as bad as yours, mind you, but bad enough that she'll have to be bedridden for at least a week. Until a time where her burns are healed.'

A week, that doesn't sound too bad!

'And the marines? How many of them survived?' You ask tentatively. Though this wasn't entirely your fault, you still feel responsible for the damage it has caused.

'Ah, well, of the eight that went down there, two are resting up, they'll take the same time as your friend, not as long as you'll take to recover.' He remarks, a pitying look in his eyes.

'H-How long will I take to recover?' you ask, hoping for a good answer.

'Two weeks, no more.' he answers, shaking his head. 'Luckily for you, we have some of the best medicine available in the South Blue. Or else you'd be in strife.' he continues, rubbing his shoulder. 'As it is, you'll have bad burns all over your body, if you took the bandages off you'd see the result of the blast. Which, of course, I'd advise against.'

>Burns, that's not too bad! It'll make pirates afraid of you!

'I just hope Mia will be alright,' you rasp sadly, wondering how bad her burns will be. 'And the marines' families? How are they coping?'

'Well, the wives are heartbroken, as expected. Two of the men had children, and they'll grow up without fathers. I think that's the worst part.' he responds with grief in his voice. 'I knew one of the men since he was a babe, and he was going places.'

'I know what it's like to lose someone you care for,' you say, grief forming a painful lump in your throat. Gods, calling back those memories were painful! 'There was a man, a boy, rather. A boy on my old ship that was close to a son to me, Evan was his name. He was a jokester, a trickster, and an all round troublemaker.' you continue past that lump in your throat, 'He was my sister's ward, and I lost him. Lost my whole crew to that bastard Kid. They died right before my eyes, crucified. I had to watch them all get propped up in the ground. Then, when they weren't dying fast enough, Kid cut their throats. Made me watch it all.' tears were freely running down your face now, eyes burning worse than the rest of your face.

'Kid? Eustass Kid?' The doctor asks, surprised.

'Aye, that'd be the one.' You reply angrily. Even the mention of his name pisses you off!

'Gods.' The elderly man says, 'That bastard killed more marines and civilians here than any three pirates put together.'

'Aye, he was a right bastard. When I catch up to him, I'll kill him.' You say with vehement finality.

'Ah, so that's why you're so hell bent on capturing pirate, eh? So nobody goes through the same things that you have?'

>Aye, exactly.

'Aye, exactly.,' you reply, memories flashing in your mind. The day you brought your rag-tag group of pirates together under your flag. The day you captured your first merchant ship.

The day they died.

'I want the bastards to know that once I set my sights on them, there's no getting away from me.' You continue without a hint of what was going through your mind.

'Good man,' the doctor replies, taking a deep breath, 'And even better that you're going to be clearing the pirates from these waters for at least a while.'

'Aye to that. I hope to keep them away forever.' you respond, gritting your teeth (painfully)

'Noble goal.' he says, drawing himself up and getting ready to walk out. 'Anything else you need before I go?'

While we're holed up healing anyone want to make a plan on taking down our next bounty? Maybe ask the Lt to help us gather some information on one of them?

I hope Mia's burns aren't too bad man. For grizzled pirate hunter Huck they can be an advantage but she's got the whole bar tender thing after she decides to retire again.

>I think that pirate's bounty(ies) could help the families cope the sudden loss. Not much, but it's something. What do you think?

>>37563995
thats not a bad plan,,, she is gonna be out before us from the sounds of it, maybe we can get her to check out around town for info. i think we should probably go for the smaller targets first and work our way to the higher bounties, but, if we try to take live prisoners again we may need to come up with a better set up...
>>
so: Gund, worth 6 million berry
he should be our next target i guess

No. Bounties will help us catch more pirates.
>>

'Some water, if you could,' you say in reply to his question.

'I can certainly do that,' he says, turning and starting to walk.

'And!' you say, stopping him in his tracks, 'Do you, by any chance, know any harebrained doctors that would be interested in adventure?'

'Harebrained doctors? Yes. Harebrained doctors ready to go on an 'adventure'?' You can practically hear the air quotes. 'Most certainly not.'

Damn. 'Well, spread word around that a bounty hunter crew is looking for a skilled doctor.' You respond.

'Will do.'

---------------------------------------------
It's a few days before the doctor -who has introduced himself to be Terry- allows you to make your first tentative steps on your newly scarred body. At first, it's a disaster, having passed out from the pain after the first step, so you don't think it's going too well.

After two days of making little steps on the road to recovery, you're met by Mia as you walk the halls of the Marine Hospital
'Huck! By God, you're covered in bandages!' she exclaims, rushing as fast as she can over to you.

She doesn't seem too bad, there's bandages on her arms and legs, but not around her head like you, nor around her entire body, constricting her movement, like yours are.

'Aye, Mia, they told me you'd be out soon, but I didn't think this soon!' you reply, catching your breath by leaning on one of the walls.

'Right, I recover pretty fast, if I do say so myself,' she says proudly before a worried look comes across her face. 'You sound like shit, Huck, what's wrong with your throat?'

'Doctor Terry said my throat was burned pretty badly, says I'll sound like this for a good while, if not forever.' you reply with a grimace.

>'It'll make me intimidate pirates more!

Hey Yolan! how bad are our burns? also mow severe are Mia's? she did join us but i doubt she planned to end up scarred and stuff.

We're not exactly /covered/ in burns. But the right side of our face is scarred, and our torso is mildly bad. Our legs are the worst though. Lucky we're a long range fighter and not a short range one, or we'd be in trouble!

Mia's is bad for now. Like she said, she's a fast healer. The doctors in this hospital are first rate, so both of yours will take considerably less time to heal than they would if you were being treated by a village doctor, but less time than if it was Chopper or Law that was doctoring you.

Your burns and Mia's will also heal better than they would in a normal hospital, giving you more mobility and less pain than they otherwise would give you.

And you don't get that she's not mad at you, she's an ex-marine. She's probably gotten used to the fact that she'll be scarred in some way. She already might be for all we know.

Does that answer your questions?
>>
>>37564303
yup

as long as we dont look like this guy

>>37564351
Your face isn't burnt off, it's just bad scarring. The burns on your face will be the only ones restricting your movement and may be the only ones that actually hurt for a while after you're healed.
