Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you gave a tour of your new estate, invested a large sum of money into its improvement, and meditated.

You stand up, holding out your cloak so you can inspect it. It appears as it always does, giving no outward indication of what it's capable of. Eventually you remove it carefully from your shoulders and fold it neatly. Without the cloak, you almost feel like you're missing an arm. It contains all of your worldly possessions, and you must admit you've grown quite attached to Ricky. Still, if it's influencing you unduly you're going to need to go without it for a while.

You wander over to your bed, setting your cloak down on a bedside chest of drawers. Then you strip off your boots, robes, and underrobes so you're left in only your silken trousers. Taking a moment to admire yourself, you note that you seem a little more toned than you recall being the last time you bothered to check. Not that you have anything to show off, really. You're thin and lanky, but perhaps in a few months time that won't be the case.

Regardless, you retrieve your brooch from your cloak and lay down on the bed, your bed. That will take some getting used to. Using the connection afforded to you by the brooches, you reach out to your Master. You feel the connection open after only a moment's delay. {Master Karim, I seek your advice. Recently a powerful anger consumed my thoughts due to an incident which seems... well, not minor but undeserving of such a strong reaction. As the anger abated I was struck by a crippling headache and passed out for a short while.}

{I've recently meditated and discovered that only thin tendrils of frayed vys remained in my head. I also found that my soul was reduced, somehow. It had taken on a grey pallor and lost some of its usual brightness. I fear that my cloak is slowly corrupting me, or perhaps merely draining my vys. Have you ever heard of such a thing?}

Your Master responds after a few moment's thought. {The Void is a curious place, Mikhael. What little we know of it mostly comes from a few disparate first hand accounts and a collection of writings from Vatis who went insane long ago. In the modern age no structured, rigorous study of the void has taken place. That being said, I've had some dealings with void creatures in the past.}

{A close associate of mine once encountered a creature he described as a gaping maw with legs. He said its mouth opened up into a universe all its own, stars twinkling tantalizingly in that strange space. It attacked him, and he managed to kill it after a drawn out battle. Its corpse dissolved into thin air, preventing him from studying it. This associate of mine was overcome with a deep obsession with this creature, he wanted to find out all that he could about it. His research led him into the void itself.}

{I lost contact with him after that, but when I next met him a few decades later he was a changed man. He had only a thin grasp on reality, his frame emaciated and eyes withdrawn. He appeared as if he hadn't slept in months, and he was constantly twitching. I didn't even recognize him until he called my name.}

{Anyway, I invited him into my home and fed him a hot meal. He rambled on and on about discovering this vast bureaucratic entity which saw to the day to day operation of reality. I thought he'd simply lost it. He left with the dawn and I didn't see him again for quite some time. Eventually I received an envoy from the Shah himself, calling me to join a band of experienced Vatis in putting down one of our mad colleagues. I had a feeling I knew who it was.}

{When I arrived at the palace and met with the others, they explained the situation to me. Peasants had arrived that morning and beseeched the Shah to hear their plea for help. They'd survived the slaughter of their village by a mysterious creature they believed to be a Vatis. According to them, it appeared from a tear in the sky and just started mindlessly killing anyone that it saw. The survivors were those villagers who ran.}

{As you can imagine we went to the village and verified the peasant's claim that it was destroyed. There was no sign of any creature, so we set camp in the hopes that it would return. True enough, as the sun set a tear opened in the sky and a creature fell out. It was the hideous thing, the skull of an animal with these beady black eyes. It wore a robe that seemed to twist around it like shadow itself. We fought the creature long and hard, one my my colleagues taking a mortal wound in the process.}

{When finally we killed the creature its robe melted away, along with the skull that served as its head. What was left was a naked, emaciated corpse without a head of any kind. The others weren't certain who it was, but I knew it had to be my old associate. I had felt a foreign presence in my mind throughout the battle, calling out to me. Asking me to kill it and put it out of its misery. We all assumed that he'd found an artifact in some forgotten hole and been swiftly corrupted by its influence.}

There is a long pause before your master next speaks. Your mind is alight with paranoid worries. {I don't believe that you yet have anything to fear. My associate had close contact with the void for years, making numerous voyages into that black realm. Who knows what creatures he encountered, or what he saw whilst there. That being said, I think you should avoid any contact with the void or with that cloak of yours for a few days. Purge your system of any accumulated influence. Like fasting.}

Think you could host a vote to pitch some money to build a Siege! Arena? Since we kinda created it. Thought maybe we could do it at the party to showcase it to our friends who almost all happen to be mages who themselves could play.

Great marketing.

Though you are calmed somewhat by the knowledge that your Master thinks you'll be okay, you still find yourself worrying about just how extensively you've been corrupted. Another part of you wonders if you even are corrupted. For all you know, what's happening to you and what happened to your master's associate could be completely different. {Thank you, Master. I intend to separate myself from the cloak for a time. Hopefully I'll have been returned to good health before it's time for my little housewarming party.}

The connection severs and you set the brooch down on the table. You hesitate for a moment before grabbing hold of your cloak and reaching out through the mental connection you share with Ricky. A subdued screech fills your mind, and you're filled with a sense of gratitude for the delicious living flesh you were gifted yesterday.

You shake your head to dispel the sensation. You try to impress upon Ricky that you're glad he enjoyed your gift, and follow it with a vague sense of curiosity accompanied with an image of your soul as you recall it appearing not moments ago; that is to say, dull and lifeless. Ricky responds with a wave of confusion.

You try something else. You picture yourself, with the dull golden orb sitting in your chest. Then you picture Ricky standing next to you. Finally, you imagine a stream of golden light flowing from the orb in your chest into Ricky. You cap the series of mental images off with a sense of inquiry, that you're asking a question.

Ricky's response is emphatically negative. You're bombarded with a sense that what you displayed is distinctively 'Wrong'. You can't really put a finger on what sort of emotion Ricky is sending you beyond that. You would almost go as far as saying the idea is anathema to him.

FINALLY WE FOUND OUT WHAT THE CLOAK DID.
>>
Of course, this merely raises more questions. If it's not him, what is it? Is it the cloak? Is it the void itself? Is Ricky lying? Can Ricky even lie? You're not inclined to think you would imagine it would be hard to fake emotions shared across a mental link. Then again, you're not familiar with the minds of void entities.

Regardless, you focus on a sense of gratitude towards Ricky and then set the cloak down. That done you stand up and strip the bed of its sheets, taking a moment to shake them out and remake the bed. Finally you crawl into bed and make yourself comfortable, the mattress proving surprisingly soft for being so apparently old.

You are troubled by thoughts of your soul and its depletion, but eventually you feel your thoughts still and the world begins to drift away. The last thing you're conscious of before you surrender yourself to dreams of your past is the soft brush of a hand against your forehead.

You awaken some unknown hours later. The world beyond your window is black, only the moon and the stars above providing illumination. The soft sounds of waves crashing against the docks are almost enough to lull you back to sleep, but you reluctantly force yourself to sit up. Rubbing your eyes, you consider what you wish to do this morning.

>Contact Fulvia and have her give you an update on how things went yesterday, she doesn't sleep.
>Go out and search for that green soul you saw. Meditate first to get your bearings on where it is.

You throw your legs over the side of the bed, getting up and taking a moment to stretch. Once you've worked the stiffness of sleep from your limbs, you make your way over to where you discarded your clothing the night before. You lethargically pull on your under robes and the expensive black and silver silk robes you bought only a few days prior. You really should think about getting some traveling clothes. A shirt and a sturdy vest or something. Silk, while soft and strong, is also very expensive.

As you make your way out of the master bedroom and into the second story balcony, you reach out to Fulvia via the brooches. {How did everything go yesterday?} You take a minute to survey the dining hall from the upper balcony. The old tables are gone, and most of the ratty carpet that covered the floor has been dragged out. Most of the dust and debris that covered the area has been swept up. Zahak is sleeping in the center of the room on top of his blanket, which cast strange shifting shadows across the walls. A few burnt husk of rats lay in a pile next to him.

Crates, chest, and all sorts of materials lay scattered all across the dining hall, almost forming a maze. You imagine this is where they're storing most of the supplies bought yesterday. You spy massive bolts of thin, transparent silk propped against one corner, and a crate of what appears to be gold plates next to it. Seems they really made the most of their funds.

Fulvia responds promptly. {Work is progressing at an acceptable pace. The reflecting pool in the entry hall has been cleaned out, the kitchen has been tidied up as well. Work in the ballroom is slow going but we had almost finished when the day was concluded. The dining hall has been cleared out, cleaned, and is currently being used as storage. We also managed to tidy up the library. Unfortunately we weren't able to get to the guest bedrooms in the time we had.}

Well, that's fine. You've got two more full days to work on fixing the place up. {Good, I'm glad things are proceeding well. How much silver did you have left over after the shopping was all said and done?}

Fulvia responds immediately once more. {After concluding our shopping we had a remainder of two thousand, five hundred, thirty-eight silver. Prema has suggested it be placed into a house fund to be used either for emergencies or for future projects.}

So that means they put seven thousand sixty two silver to use. You can't help but feel they could've gotten a better price, but you suppose you can't really be sure.

{How did Prema do as a negotiator? Did you have to step in often to haggle down the price?}

Fulvia responds after a moment's hesitation. {While she seems to understand the value of an item, she was reluctant to negotiate for prices which were less than the value of the object. She did not over pay, but she did not get a good deal either.}

Once a week Prema and slaves will dedicate a small but meaningful offering/service/prayer in front of the shrine, and all visitors will give a small token to the shrine when they enter. Companions are immune, and at entrance a small bowl of offerings can be selected from so that visitors don't have to feel obligated to contribute something of their own every time they visit.

What we are gonna have is a goddam shield that he designs, then, we are gonna enchant that motherfucker so that when he uses his class cannon of an arm that goddamn shield acts as a magnifier. So that when he gets up close and personal with his fight, and the fight isn't going his way, he activates that goddamn shield and blasts that fucker to smitheriens.

Skull kid has already made a leap in this area, with his gauntlet absorbing ambient vys and creating a charge.

You think about it for a moment, but it wouldn't feel right to just consign your friends' money to a house fund without at least asking them first. {I'll consult with the others and see what they think. I assume you support the idea?}

Fulvia responds promptly. {Yes. Even if Prema is not what I would call good with money she seems obedient enough and quite content with her station in life. I would not worry about her attempting to run off or steal from us.}

You start to drift downstairs, still half asleep. You kind of want to take a bath, but you don't know what sort of crap might have begun to grow in that bath. It's been sitting more or less stagnant for years now. Whatever, it's not like skipping a few days of bathing ever hurt anyone. {I'll keep that in mind, Fulvia.}

After that the connection is severed and you're left to navigate the complex maze of boxes, crates, and stacks to the opposite end of the dining hall. You consider stopping to give Zahak a hug, but he seems quite content where he is. You wouldn't want to disturb him. Eventually you emerge on the other side and push open the door, finding the foyer vastly nicer than it was when you first saw it. The reflecting pool is clear and clean, no longer choked with mold and scum. The floors as well have been scrubbed and any detritus removed.

The kitchen proves to be similarly tidied. No longer is the air choked with dust or mold growing in the slats of the windows. You check the various pantries, cupboards, and drawers and find that Prema thought to stock up on all manner of spices and supplies. You find that there is a small cellar beneath the pantry for the storage of perishable items; meats, fruits, vegetables, and the like. Most of the meat she bought has been salted, but some hasn't. You pick out a pomegranate and crack open its shell, sucking out the sweet seeds inside while considering what else you'd like for breakfast.

Eventually you settle on making lentil soup and some tea. You find that you have most of the necessary ingredients but lack certain spices your mother usually incorporated when she cooked. Nothing vital, fortunately. It isn't long before you're sat at the island in the center of the kitchen, enjoying a hot cup of strong tea and a filling breakfast.

Unfortunately you forgot that all of your books are kept in your cloak. You'll need to run upstairs and fetch one, since you're determined to only wear your cloak when absolutely necessary. When you go out on the town, for instance.

Looks like you'll study the codex for a while. I'll start writing in a little bit here, going to run out for breakfast. I'll just use this thread until it 404s, then start the next thread 101 at that point. Going forward, you shouldn't feel obligated to keep these threads alive. Just let them fall off the board.

Votes are not confined to 5 minutes, usually I try to alot at least 10 for voting outside of Final Destination, but really I just call it whenever it seems like most of the votes are in. That said, more than 6 hours late is kind of extreme, and it's not like the votes from that point forward would've changed the outcome.
>>
>>37587181
The Codex will just tell us to fuck off if we try to use it in the magical way, won't it?
>>
>>37587224
Yeah, but there is stuff to be learned from reading it mundanely.
>>
>>37587229
Oh, I almost forgot, I had an idea.
Would it be possible to do the out-of-body thing during meditation, where we can see our body from a different POV, and use ice blades to study anatomy? I THINK our senses are dulled when doing that, so it'd take care of the pain, since we can just heal it up before finishing the meditation, right?
Also, welcome back nigga, you're early today <3
>>
Took me a bit to realize this but now we know a magi-medical [that term even real?] reason for madness; a depleted soul.
And also we know what to look for if we want to find a mad person, just look for greyish'd souls.

Question, inbetween the stuff we're doing are we going to teach our master Void Meditation or introductions to Enchanting before we leave for Chryss' husboslam or upon our hopefully inevitable return?
>>
>>37587488
While small, there IS a possibility of us getting rekt while on the way to/returning from the husband killing, considering it's likely we'll get in trouble, so it'd be safer to do it before, but then that also has some possible negative outcomes.
>>
>>37587488
Do we even know how to teach enchanting?

The meditation upon the designs of the universe is, at least in fluff text, just the deepest meditative state we can achieve. Beyond that part and what runes look like and do I'm not sure how we'd teach him, even if we do an example in front of him while he's meditating I'm not sure how much that helps in regards to figuring out how to sever ones own soul and forcefeed it into an object.
>>

Even if it were the case we'd still be relatively "weak" on the GM scale. A dual GM can pull a lot of bullshit but we're still limited by vys, and leech isn't always a reliable option. But dat vys bank sword tho, that shit's always dope.

Problem being, the Rhynians would've mass produced something that useful for all their commanding officers, we wouldn't heard of it in some form before if they knew how to mechanically gather Vys, it's the most logical "next-step" for powering up an extended empire.
But because there's no reason not to, unless it had long term consequences beyond their mage-soldiers relying on leech, it's odd that we haven't seen hide nor hair of it when they didn't really seem the type of people to care too much about negative side effects.
The closest I can think of based off what SK already has would be running Vys through a coil that is connected to the Vys collector itself, and then only leeching from that. But still, previous concerns apply.
Though it may just be a case of my historical paranoia taking the form of "oh the romans should've had this tech, because they had all the stuff for it!" but in reality they may have never seen the need for it's invention in the first place, and it's really just safe but time consuming.

>>
>>37588734
They did make stuff though, Fulvia's body has one and it isn't exactly unique, it was a secretary model.
The lamps are also vys collectors, and there were plenty of them in Longia.
Regardless, we won't know until we try, but we should only use it in emergencies, to ot to get reliant on it and not forget to meditate and such.
>>
>>37588734
>"oh the romans should've had this tech, because they had all the stuff for it!" but in reality they may have never seen the need for it's invention in the first place
Like with El-Amin completely lacking standard methods of water purification. Angled screw pumps into angled screw pumps, relatively clean salt-free water for days.
>>
>>37588781
Yeah, they had them, but not purely for leeching from.
Of course I did neglect the possibility that their magitech was so good they didn't see a need for it, as another alternative to the previous lack of necessity in its invention.

Y'know, Fulvia would may be able to answer a quarter of this crap.

You leave your food on the kitchen island and make your way back up to your bedroom, careful to avoid disturbing Zahak. Your cloak is exactly where you left it, sitting on the chest of drawers beside your bed. Out of curiosity you decide to pole around the chest of drawers, but don't find much of interest. Dust, some tattered threads of cloth, and a dead spider. Sliding the drawers shut, you lift up your cloak and reach inside to retrieve the Metal Codex.

You admire book's rusted iron cover, whatever design originally decorated its front long since worn away by the trials of time. You wonder just how old this book must be; older than anyone alive today you would imagine. Truly, it's remarkable how well it's held up through the millennia.

Tucking it under one arm you make for the kitchen once more, navigating the vast maze of boxes and loose articles that is the dining hall at the moment. Eventually you find yourself once more seated before a steaming bowl of lentil soup and a cup of hot tea with lemon and honey. You set your book down carefully on the counter next to your breakfast, gently pulling open the cover and leafing through its beautifully decorated pages.

The moonlight streaming in through the slats in the windows gleams brilliantly off the gold, silver, and lapis that decorates each page. Eventually you find the point where you left off reading last time and begin to scan the page while absentmindedly taking a sip of tea to wash down a spoonful of soup.

(1/?)
>>
It seems like channeling metal magic into the page caused the ink which sits on each page to leap up and act out whatever scene the text was describing. You left off on a page voicing concern for the future of Dhatu's church, stating that belief waned among the populace as their god continued to slumber. Flipping the page you find that the author continues along that line of thought, stating that if Dhatu does not awaken soon then time will pass him by. His name will be forever lost to the ages, his tenants forgotten. His cult with either abandon him or die off one by one, until none remain.

The author also warns against taking drastic measures in an attempt to awaken the god. Though it may be true that the death of a Vatis releases a pulse of energy which draws the attention of many lesser gods, self-sacrifice will serve no purpose save shrinking the church. Besides, Greater Deities like Dhatu, Pani, Prthvi, Surya, or even She Who Is Banished are above the notice of such pitiable burst of magic.

Turning the page once more, you find massive full page illustration of a collection of warriors encountering an old hermit seated in front of a cave, a city visible in the background. The caption on the right of the image is simple enough, but sounds to you like paranoid rambling. It states: “They will hunt us, Brothers and Sisters of the faith. They call us heathens and madmen. Band together, and obey your elders.”

On the next page you find no text. It seems you've entered a new portion of the book, this one dedicated to more practical advice. A figure sits in the center in a meditative pose, his head a golden orb. Black tendrils of ink creep from the edges of the page, prodding and grasping at the central figure's mind to no avail.

You turn the page and find the image on the previous pages largely repeated, except with more detail. Veins crawl across the central figure's form, illustrated with copper ink. A bright golden orb sits in the center of his chest. You're not sure if it's his vys reserve, or his soul. It could be either, you suppose. The black ink continues to assault the figure's mind the golden orb that is his head remains unassailable.

Turning the page once more, the man appears to be eating a piece of the golden orb in his chest. At least, you think so. The golden orb is missing a chunk and the man is holding the missing chunk like he's about to eat it. They didn't actually draw a mouth, so you suppose you can't really be certain.

Turning the page again you find it filled with men in women contorted into various impossible poses, the dull grey of iron filling in an increasing proportion of their body. One man appears to be standing on one hand, his legs held up straight as an arrow. A woman has managed to twist both of her legs behind and over her shoulders and proceeds to stand on her two feet. It hurts just to look at it.

As you continue reading, you find what appears to be a manual of arms. A man sits at the top of the left page, but instead of hands his arms end in long, sharp blades. He goes from one form to the next, slashing at invisible figures. Some of the forms remind you of Marsala Ve, where as others remind you more of the sort of thing you'd see in a boxing gymnasium; upper cuts and quick jabs.

The next page after that is the point at which you think the book slammed closed previously. It's devoid of decoration save for a single box of text at the center. It seems to be a mandate of some sort from some forgotten priest, or perhaps the author of the text. You can't really be certain. Regardless, it states that the only way for Dhatu's priesthood to survive into the modern era was through magical and martial excellence. By becoming an intrinsic part of the war effort, they would bring honor and wealth to their god.

Obviously it didn't work, because before reading this tome you'd never heard of Dhatu. You can only imagine they failed, or died off. Perhaps their faith was deemed dangerous and correspondingly suppressed. That would explain the author's paranoia regarding being hunted by some mysterious 'they'.

Turning the page, you find that the text and elaborate decoration once again returns. This section of the book seems to relate to the actual methods of performing the actions depicted in the previous chapter. It states that to ward off the influence of those lesser creatures descended from She Who Is Banished, one must be willing to consume that which makes them whole. While it is an inelegant and drastic measure, it is often necessary when coming into direct contact with the Descendants. As one improves their understanding of Dhatu's mysteries, they will learn to instead apply the same methods they use to reinforce their bodies to their minds.

You must admit, as beautiful as the pages may be it's far easier to understand when you just channel magic into the text. At least that way you don't have to keep stopping to parse a line, figuring out how it works grammatically before continuing on. Old Samjan had eight cases, three numbers, three grammatical genders, and five declensions. That's just the nouns. The verbs were even more complex. Even if the spelling hasn't changed much in the last eight thousand years, the language has been immensely simplified.

Out of curiosity, you place your hand flat against the page and channel metal magic. You're forced to jerk your hand away as the book slams forcefully shut, the sound echoing through the kitchen and the entry hall beyond. You hear scrabbling from the dining hall and then a high pitched sound fills the air. It's some kind of mix between a squeak, a growl, and a hiss. Hard to describe and surprisingly loud, though not particularly intimidating. You think it was Zahak's first attempt at roaring.

He comes crashing into the kitchen a moment later, smoke curling from his nostrils. Upon the sight of you, he seems to grow confused. He flicks out his tongue to taste the air, and sniffs at the ground. Apparently he decides there's no danger and happily crawls across the room to sit beside you at the kitchen island. He's really gotten pretty big. Even sitting on a raised stool as you are he still manages to rest his head in your lap. He's not quite as tall as the island itself, yet.

You scratch at the base of his horns, a contented growl rumbling up from his throat. It's not really a proper purr, although it might be mistaken for one. You imagine it will grow more distinct as Zahak gets older.

>>
You begin to hear faint footsteps echoing through your new home. It's only a few minutes later that Chrys wanders into the kitchen, eyes half-lidded and hair a mess. You'd forgotten how long her hair was, she always has it hidden beneath that shawl of hers. It hangs down well past her shoulders, burnt orange in color. It seems to grow thicker around the base of her horns, though you're not sure why.

She fills a bowl from the pot of lentil soup you prepared and digs around for a spoon. You're grateful that Prema had the foresight to buy simple iron cutlery, in addition to gold and silverware. Once she's found a spoon she sits down across from you, mumbling a brief 'good morning' before beginning to eat her breakfast.

You take the time to glance outside, and find that the pale light of dawn has begun to light up the sky. It's probably six or so in the morning. You're not entirely sure what the sleeping habits of your companions are, but you imagine at least Darzi and maybe Mortia or Skull Kid should be waking up in the near future. Profectus is, of course, a lazy son of a bitch and would probably sleep until noon or later if you let him.

The first thing that catches your eye are the... statues? You think they're statues facing into the gloom that blankets the chamber beyond the golden glow of your lantern. They're great metal things, a long pole with a hole bored down the center of it extending towards the rest of the chamber. They have four wheeled legs, and they seem meant to be carted around. Some sort of fleshy mass is draped over them though, binding them to the floor.

You push away your long since emptied bowl of soup and the dregs of your tea, turning your attention to Chrys. “So what do you think of this place? Pretty nice, isn't it? I mean, it needs some work put into it at the moment but eventually it ought to be quite impressive. Especially with all the improvements we've set out to make. We'll want for nothing in terms of facilities.”

Chryssa seems drawn at least slightly further into the land of the living by the sound of your voice. She shakes her head to dispel some of the lingering cobwebs of sleep. “I think it shows much promise. The structure seems well built and easily defensible should we find ourselves besieged and the facilities allow us to be largely self-sufficient. I would like to see about relegating a portion of the gardens for the growing of fruits and vegetables, though I am unsure how Mortia will take my suggestion. She seems quite taken with the idea of using it as an herb garden.”

She pauses to slurp down another spoonful of soup. “I will say, we could use a contingent of guards to keep the place protected whilst we are away. While I've no doubt at least one of our party will wish to stay here and pursue their craft, it would still be prudent to see that the place is not robbed or otherwise trespassed upon.”

You suppose that's not a bad idea necessarily. If anything they'd serve to keep your slaves in line and keep the riff raff from hanging around the docks. However, you would be expected to pay them. It's generally held that arming slaves, regardless of how well treated they might be, tends to end poorly. It gives them too much power, and invites usurpation. The Samjan have used it as a tactic in war, allowing large numbers of their soldiers to be captured and enslaved, earning the trust of their new masters, then inciting a revolt within Rhynian territory. Why, it was how the City of Azash, now El-Amin, was recaptured after it first fell to the Rhynian armies so long ago.

You disregard your historical musings and focus once more on the issues of guards. If you were going to pay them a wage, you would want to have some form of reliable income. While the investments you've made so far may well supply that income once they start to show returns, they may not show returns for years to come. Then again... perhaps you could construct a number of golems to act as your security force? They wouldn't be very smart, but if Fulvia could manage them directly as she claims she could that wouldn't be an issue. On the other hand, it would mean she'd be forced to stay here rather than joining you on your adventures.

In the end, you decide you'll just need to think about it more later. “I'll keep that in mind, Chrys. It would be nice to have some sort of guard force, we have the armory to equip them and everything, but it would likely prove quite a large expense.”

Chryssa shrugs, nonplussed. “Buy a tavern and allow that slave of yours, Prema was it? Allow her to manage it. Is not the reason you hired her to keep track of your various investments and endeavors?”

That is true, although you don't know if you'd want to buy a tavern. Certainly not the worst business to have a few fingers in, but there are likely other, more profitable enterprises to invest in.

Chrys glances over her shoulder briefly, sitting very still for a moment. You take a moment to shoot little jets of flame at Zahak. He seems to quite enjoy it, and you're careful to avoid lighting anything on fire. By the time Chryssa speaks you've gotten him to roll over onto his back so you can bathe his belly in fire, a loud rumbling growl filling the air as Zahak begins to doze off.

(2/3)
>>
When Chryssa finally does speak, you cut off the flow of magic. Zahak whines, but you ignore him for now. “We are a very odd group of people. I suppose one has to be odd if they wish to essentially live their lives as wandering mercenaries and grave robbers. Anyway, I wanted to ask; will you be leaving for my village after the party? I do not wish to seem impatient, but I am quite eager to have that task resolved.”

You understand the implication, she's asking when you intend on leaving to kill her husband.

>It's the very next thing on your to do list, you'll leave the day after the party.
>Well, maybe not immediately after but certainly within a week of the party.
>Just tell her not to worry, you'll get to it eventually. You've just got a lot on your plate at the moment.

No it isn't, it'd be totally normal to have a suitor kill the husband to marry the girl, and she was tricked into the marriage. We're just being an upstanding citizen and freeing her from this oppressive and restricting marriage, which she still tries to respect out of respect for her father.
Also the guy tried to kill us just because the last time we were there.

“It'll be leaving the day after the party, most likely. I promised to teach my master the art of Enchanting, and I want to make sure Zahak knows how to meditate before I leave. I may actually bring him with me, since I feel a bit guilty leaving him alone for such long stretches of time. I may also swing through Anthus and meet with Demetrios, see how Siege! is coming along. Anyway, once I leave don't expect me back for a few weeks, at least.”

She nods, looking down into her bowl and stirring it languidly. “I must admit, I feel ashamed asking this of you. As vile a man as my husband may be, I cannot bring myself to kill him. My father would rise from his grave to scold me about duty and honor if I did. It is too much to ask that you accomplish this task in my stead, and I'm grateful that you're willing to make time for it.”

Huh, you hadn't really thought about it too much. “Don't mention it, Chrys. I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to get to it. I'd intended to have it done before we left the temple, but obviously that plan didn't work out. What with the pirates and the portal to the void.”

You jump in surprise as needle sharp teeth sink into your finger. Jerking your hand away from Zahak, you find that he's left a neat little row of pin pricks in the flesh, blood welling up from most of them. It's a simple task to heal the wound, but you're still annoyed. You turn your attention to Zahak, focusing on generally negative, admonishing thoughts as you speak to him. “No biting! That's a very bad dragon.”
(1/2)
>>
He hisses, and you feel an immense sense of boredom and mild annoyance. Guilt is mixed among his many emotions, but it's an afterthought. You suppose you haven't been as attentive a father as you could be. An idea occurs to you; why not begin rectifying your earlier neglect? Turning your attention briefly to Chrys you announce. “I think I'm going to head over to my Master's home. Tell the others that's where I am. I may as well begin to wrap up a few of the task I need to accomplish before I leave.”

She looks up from her food, nodding firmly. “Of course, if I'm not mistaken the plan for today is merely to continue work fixing up the estate. We've decided to focus on getting it into acceptable condition, additional decoration is secondary for now.”

That's wise, it doesn't need to be pretty for the party just nice, although you'd certainly like it to be pretty as well. You imagine they should at least manage to hang the silk awnings and haul in most of the new furniture. You turn your attention once more to Zahak, impressing upon him that you wish him to follow you. “Follow me, we're going to see Uncle Karim.”

Zahak cocks his head to one side questioningly, but follows you as you get up and make your way out of the kitchen. You have him stay inside while you get the camels hitched to the cart, but once that's done he slips out the doors after you and climbs inside. As you shut the door behind him, you wonder if it might not be better to have someone else drive you so you can focus your attentions on Zahak, and perhaps begin roughly planning out some sort of constructed language to take notes in.

Well the counter argument is that it is totally normal in her culture for people to kill someones husband so they can try to marry them, not saying that we will but whatever. Also that her problem isn't with just killing him its with failing her duties as a wife by killing him. Obviously we don't have that hanging over us.

The slaves have weeks to complete it, why spend additional money on workers? Having the estate finished for the party is not important. We can tell our friends that we just got it, they won't think anything about it.

>>
>>37593243
Historically speaking, polygamy has been common throughout the Middle East and India since before recorded history. Polyandry as well, at least in the case of India. Thus, it wouldn't seem right to create a society heavily based on ancient Middle Eastern and Indian civilizations without including some form of plural marriage.

Anyway, my fetishes are completely unrelated to my setting. I didn't make it as jerk material, I made it as a framework for a story. Harems aren't even really the norm outside of Samjan culture. Most humans and elves are monogamous.
