Stage 56: Things that get better with age should not include the enemy.

Your priestess is a little hot under the collar.

While this is possible the single most cliché thing anyone ever says about Fire dragonettes, in this particular instance it isn't merely true, it is terribly inappropriate, as it means that your sister has managed to piss off Matagama Kiku to an extent that has her fires so out of control that you can see the shadows of her cheekbones and lower jaw through her skin, silhouetted through her flesh by the blazing golden light that is emanating from her throat and presumably her chest. Her irises and horns are glowing gold, and her pupils are literally emitting paired beams of light. She's also holding double handfuls of unusually potent looking charms of her own design, and her hair is floating in the wash of hot air rising from her body. Terrifying is not a word you would hesitate to use for her at this moment, despite her stature.

Your sister is on her knees in front of the diminutive dragonette, her face illuminated by your priestess' gaze. She is looking distraught, which you suspect has a lot to do with the revelation she made to you earlier: she broke away from her Shinto upbringing and turned to Buddhism, and has pleaded your case to the Ruler of the Buddhist Hells, who has apparently taken up said case. Her contrite pose doesn't mean she's helpless – anything but, given she's immune to most of Kiku-chan's innate powers. On the other hand, Kiku is not a young dragon despite her usual looks and right now you wouldn't want to lay odds on who might win a fight. Kiku-chan is also a priestess, and while your sister is a mystic and a seer, and somewhat accomplished as one, she hasn't had a century to hone her piety.

If Kiku-chan is defending you or Er Yin, all bets are off.

Setting the tray of tea on the dresser, you calmly make yourself busy preparing the tea. Kiku-chan's breathing is harsh you can hear the tiniest warble of the flames in her lungs just waiting to be released. Your sister is silent, eyes half closed; they're only separated by a few feet, and as fast as Kiku-chan is, your sister is a Water dragonette, and her finery is just as dangerous a weapon as any number of swords of knives. Of course, you have one advantage over both of them, and that is Er Yin.

Er Yin sleeps under the seal your sister placed on her, her wounds Currently obscured by bandages soaked in some red-yellow liquid, much like the bandages under your gloves are. Yui-chan is kneeling on the bed, leaning over the supine form of Er Yin-sensei, and she has her taiko sticks out, held close together and near her own chest. Her eyes are wide and frightened, but she looks like she's ready to defend Er Yin at all costs.

[+] Touching helps.

You already poured most of the tea, but you hadn't expected your sister to be here; you recall her going to her room before you conversed with Inau-chan, the demigod that Er Yin-sensei's patron kamuy sent to help you. Pouring an extra cup, and ignoring the pain if causes your injured hands, you speak into the still silent room. “You know, you really shouldn't scare Yui-niji-chan like this. I'm sure that there are far less upsetting ways to work out the issues. Er Yin-sensei is not exactly in a position to cope with opposing elements right now, much less anyone putting up barriers while she's sealed.”

There's a flicker of emotion across Kiku-chan's face, while your sister's tail twitches, once, displaying her agitation and regret. You take tea to Yui-chan first, and she looks back uncertainly. Calmly you nod, and she puts her taiko sticks down, but not away as she takes the tea from you. She glances nervously at the other dragonettes, but slurps her tea oni-fashion, which is probably a measure of how upset she is since you've never seen her do that before.

You lean over and hug Yui-chan gently, placing your forehead against hers, your horns just barely touching together. Her sigh is immediate and Yui lowers the teacup to her lap. “How is Er yin-sensei, Yui-chan?” You stroke the unconscious dragonette's surprisingly soft silver hair with one hand, since the other is wrapped about Yui's back, and the Void dragonette breathes a little more deeply, her body relaxing just the tiniest bit more. You slip your tail along Kiku-chan's back, and she stiffens, rather than relaxes, and you can feel the heat radiating from her like a furnace.

Yui shakes her head, as you expected. No better, no worse. “I've done everything I know, aniki. I just don't have anything more I can do. Maybe if I was different, or better at healing....” The oni-chick looks down into her tea, and you can see her tail shifting the sheets and covers behind her as it tries to lash back and forth.

[X] Hey, none of that – you're our Yui.
[] No, Yui-niji-chan, we're not using the orb.
[XXX] I don't want you different and neither does Akari.
[X] What do you think Er Yin-sensei would say about that?
[X] What have I said about that kind of talk, Yui-chan?

You open your eyes and look into her downcast glowing ones, the shimmering blue light that she changed to match your own eyes, or at least one of them at the time. “Akari and I want our Yui just the way she is. If you were different, you would be some other person, not the Yui we love.” Yui looks up to meet your gaze, not moving her head. You slide your hand up into her hair, cupping the back of your head through her bronze hair and wrapping your other arm around her back. “You know what Er Yin would say, too. You've listened to her talk enough. And I've told you what that kind of talk earns you.” Those soft blue cats-eyes lower again, the threat of beans bringing a faint blush to her cheeks.

You slide your tail up and down Kiku-chan's back, trusting that she's still wound up enough that she's not going to let you distract her, which of course is a distraction all by itself. You can feel her blood cooling somewhat, until it's only molten metals level of hot, instead of molten rock levels of hot. But right now you're taking care of Yui, and you tilt your head a little until your nose touches hers. She brings her head back to look at you, surprised, and you smile at her. “That you've done this much, for her, and for me, not to mention saving the princess and saving me, is more than any of us asked for. I meant it before, and I mean it now. You are Ryuu Yui, and that is more than enough.”

“Hai aniki.” Her voice is soft, relaxed, her eyes half closed as she cradles the tea in her lap.
>>
>>37549987
You kiss Yui's forehead before you stand up and you walk back to the dresser, fetching two more cups of tea. Turning you study the still intense tableau. At the moment, your sister is looking into Kiku-chan's blazing eyes, and Kiku-chan has cooled down enough that her eyes are only glowing in a normal-angry manner, and her hair is no longer floating. The tight press of her lips and the half crushed handfuls of charms don't bode well though. Walking the long way around you offer them tea without saying anything unpleasant or letting any of your feelings or thoughts infiltrate your body language. You're calm and centered, if in pain, and it's this last that really brings your sister and Kiku-chan's face-off to a halt, however temporary it might be.

It's the gloves, of course. The padding and salve that Yui wrapped them in fill the gloves, but there's no one who wears full leather gloves in a three piece business suit at home without a damn good reason. While your sister's expression and attitude quickly fill with fresh shame, Kiku-chan's expression only softens a little; the molten metal of her eyes goes to your glove and she takes the teacup from your hand with great care, the talismans gone faster than even you could see. There is no guilt in attitude or expression, and she sips the tea slowly, as does your sister.

[] So, are you two going to explain?
[] Remind them that you have many problems to deal with.
[] Thank them for taking the tea from your hands.
[] Go and get your cup while they finish cooling down.
[] Sit down on the floor and let them know you're not moving until they explain.

[X] So, are you two going to explain?

“Arigatou.” Your softly voiced thanks does make Kiku-chan look the slightest bit concerned, and she glances at your hands again as you walk back to get your own cup. Your sister was already wounded enough that the thanks was a touch of overkill, but you really do mean it.

Using your fingertips – well, technically they're claw-tips, especially now – to hold your cup is significantly less painful than using your fingers or your palm. You walk back over and sit down just this edge of between your older sister and your priestess. You sip your tea slowly, the rich syrup having made the tea slightly sweeter than you prefer, maybe just a little too much syrup added, but it's just the right temperature. Your sister isn't talking, and Kiku-chan is concentrating so hard on her tea you'd suspect she might be boiling it before it gets to her lips.

Yui is no longer slurping her tea, and seems even more relaxed than you expected which is definitely a plus, but of more interest to you is the fact that neither your sister nor Kiku-chan have budged from where they are, and they haven't said one word yet. Despite her volatile temper, Kiku-chan is capable of impressive amounts of patience, and of course your sister is a Water dragonette. You finish your tea, and then make your boldest move yet: you turn the cup upside down and place it between them.

Your sister lowers her half-finished tea, and looks at the cup in front of you, her expression stoic. Kiku-chan might not be a Water dragonette but even she can see that you're not budging an inch.
>>
>>37550637
With a frown Kiku upends the tea into her mouth and then crouches after she swallows; setting her cup next to yours so that is barely touching she takes a deep breath. “You know what bakayero diviner has done, aniki?” She is looking at the cups, unwilling to look at you or your sister.

“Yes, I know.” you can feel Kiku-chan's blood starting to heat up already. “It's nothing I can't deal with eventually. She made a mistake, and we'll get it fixed. That's how we have to do things.”

Kiku stands up so quickly you're surprised she doesn't pass out. “Ryukusa! She's brought the power of the Yama King into Japan! She's risking another conflict between the Kami and the Bodhisattva!” She sweeps her sleeve wildly out and to your sister's credit she doesn't flinch or defend herself. “If an immortal decides to try and convert you, take you to one of their Hells, or worse, send you down the Eight Fold Path instead of allowing your mikoto to reincarnate, she could start another war of faith across Japan!”

Unfortunately, your sister doesn't disagree.

[] ….you're talking about when Buddhism arrives, aren't you?
[] That won't happen, between us.
[] On my list of things to deal with, that's actually pretty low, Kiku-chan.
[] I know, but she has to atone for that on her own.
[] I'm depending on you both to avoid that.

[X] I know, but she has to atone for that on her own.
[X] I'm depending on you both to avoid that.
[+] No fights among ourselves – we need to be a family together, and that does include the two of you together.

Yui is looking at your conversation with interest now, and sipping her tea slowly, while Kiku-chan is standing, hands clenched and hair billowing. Her eyes are still molten but the threatening glow is gone at least. Your sister is looking down at her half full cup, silent and very much aware of what is going on.

You have your doubts that she'd defend herself if Kiku-chan did attack her.

“I was wondering why I would need a priestess, you know.”

Kiku-chan blinks at the sudden change of subject and Yui perks up. “Because you need a holy golf club to bash some demon's chest in?”

“Ye-No! What the heaven are you talking about?!”

“Oh. Okay, I was just guessing.” Yui slides off the bed carefully, wary of the satin sheets, and walks over to get more tea.

You sigh, really wondering where she gets this stuff from and shake your head. “I mean, a lot of powerful people have a priestess they go to, or a priest, an advisor of spiritual stuff, but I didn't think about exactly what it would mean for me to have one.” You look at Kiku-chan and she lifts a sleeve to cover her mouth, her brow furrows as much as she can possibly manage, which is like, not nearly enough to make her look that seriously confused. “I need a priestess to help me make sure I don't anger other kami, kamuy, or bodhisattva or any other kinds of spiritual power. Er Yin-sensei is a scholar of such things, but you know what they mean on a level different from anyone else.”

Your sister is looking at you with confusion as well, and you sigh again. “If my mikoto is to destroy things for the kami, then I have to be as certain and sure of it as I am of who my family is. The only way I can do that is by having someone who can explain to me what the repercussions are, someone who knows how that part of the world works. I'm a thug-” Your sister starts to protest, but you wave a hand at her. “It's what I am, and it's what Horobi is-” Kiku starts to say something and she gets a hand-wave as well. “-but I'm a thug who does it well, without hurting anyone who doesn't need it. And to do that I need my Seer, my Priestess, ~and~ my Fortuneteller. I need all of my family to do my work right, and unless I have all of you together I can't do what I'm meant to do.”

That shuts both of them up, and makes both of them look rather guilty.

“I don't approve of what Jinyuu-onee-sama did, but she did it because she loves me. It's certainly not anything worse than what Oba-san did, and it's got to be better than what Taisho Ryoga has planned. She might have to make up for it later, but that's not our place to say anymore.” Kiku-chan blinks in surprise. “Well, she said it herself, she's on the Eight Fold Path now, and she's done something that will cause us trouble. She has to help fix it, and she'll probably need both of us to do that.” Kiku-chan looks at Jinyuu, and Yui settles down behind you, which lets you wrap your tail around her waist. “That's how karma works, as far as ~I~ know.” Jinyuu is looking thoroughly chastised and you've barely said anything to her.

I'm having connection issues apparently.

>>37551704
Kiku-chan looks down at the cups on the carpet in front of you, and you let her think on that for the moment. “I don't know much, but I know there was a lot of trouble between the kami and the Buddhists in the past, and I'm depending on you both to help me get through this. I don't need the people I love fighting now. We have a stranger who seems to be a friend, and I'm taking steps to put humans in contact with the spirits again, and we have someone who needs our help to heal. And that's not even the most important or dangerous stuff.” You look at her and Jinyuu. “So please....no more of this.”

Kiku steps close and starts to kowtow. “Please forgi-” you catch her in a hug and hold her tightly.

“I'm not your kamuy, Kiku-chan, not right now,” you whisper softly. She slowly lifts her arms and hugs you back, her face buried in your shoulder.

Your sister speaks softly, addressing your priestess. “Please forgive me, Matagama Kiku. I will atone for my mistake.” You feel Kiku-chan pulling herself back together, almost feel her setting aside her anger and outrage. You hug her tightly, smiling as she stands up properly and looks at your elder sister.

“I will help you, as much as I can, if you will allow me, Ryuu Jinyuu. I would not be less than my kamuy, who has forgiven and will help you.” Her formal tone is meant to be reassuring, and in a way, it is. You imagine it's no mean feat for a Fire dragonette to put aside her outrage.

XS, have I mentioned you have great taste in movies?
Because you have Great taste in movies.

[X] Escort everyone to dinner, let Er Yin-sensei rest.
[X] Lightly probe to see what set this entire debacle off.

Yui-chan is petting your tail, which is actually kind of relaxing, but you slip it free from her waist as you stand up so that you can sweep the two cups off the floor. You hold it out for the third that Jinyuu-onee-sama has and she places it with the others. Yui already has the tray and you roll all three cups onto it into perfect positions in a single tail-move without spilling a drop. “I'm sure that the food Akari-niji-chan ordered has arrived, so I want everyone out to eat. We mustn't keep our guest waiting.”

The worst part of about your hand injuries is that you can't pick up Kiku-chan, or even hold hands. Using your claw-tips is less painful but also not recommended for people you don't want to accidentally leave holes in. Still, you lean down to kiss Kiku-chan on the forehead, but she turns her face up, kissing you on the lips despite the presence of your sister and her unconscious lover. Soft and tasting of cinnamon sticks, she breaks the kiss only slowly. “Please forgive this stupid lizard, aniki,” she whispers softly.

“There is nothing to forgive, Kiku-chan, you were doing what was right as well. I am kind of thankful you didn't spread all those talismans around. Yui-chan is just a small oni.” Your sister is watching you and Kiku thoughtfully, while said oni-chick snorts derisively as she holds the door open for you. “Was it Fire Eyes?” you ask softly of your priestess. She looks down, and you nod. With Jinyuu so distraught over the revelation, it wouldn't have taken much for Kiku-chan to decide to look at her with Fire Eyes, and without her defenses, Jinyuu-onee-sama was an open book to the eyes that see the soul.

“When did my little sister become so wise?” Jinyuu-onee-sama asks softly, smiling down at you.

“When I killed my best friend's lover, I think,” you remark off hand. That makes Yui giggle and Kiku looks up at you, confused. “You'll have to ask her later.”

The scent of Chinese food is pervasive, and there is a very animated conversation occurring around the coffee table as Hyun Chisato regales your family and friends with one or another outrageous tale from your slightly misspent childhood among an actual girl-gang in Tokyo. Kiki-hime has set up a wide variety of dishes on the breakfast nook, and visibly relaxes as you walk out with the others in tow. Inau-san, Shoko-san and Yuuhi-chan seem fascinated by the whirlwind of vibrant energy that is Chisato, while Akari-niji-chan is sitting on a stool at the counter, eating one of her hoisin pork buns delicately. Yui bounces onto the seat next to her and starts filling a plate, while Kiku-chan and Jinyuu-onee-sama are more sedate in their food-fetching.

[] Go greet Chisato. That's gonna be a scandal.
[] Go kiss your wife. That's going to be nice.
[] Go fill a dish. That's going to be painful.
[] Go have a seat. That's going to be amusing.
[] Go outside. That's going to be important.

[X] Go greet Chisato. That's gonna be a scandal.
[X] Go kiss your wife. That's going to be nice.

You avoid notice by the conversation-bound group in the middle and slip into the kitchen, sliding your tail along Akari's stocking-clad leg as you pass her. She smiles without looking up, her stoic acknowledgement all that is is needed between you. Kiki-hime steps into you as you walk to embrace her, and kisses you firmly and thoroughly. Whatever she was relieved about seems unimportant compared to the sweetness of her scent and the warmth of her kisses. You barely touch her back with your gloves but her tail slides between your wrists and her back, preventing you from a complete embrace.

“Not until you heal. I won't tell you not to touch anything because I know you're impossible, but please try not to, Ryu-chan.” She smiles at you, reaching up to caress your newly notched horns gently.

“Ah, Kiki-hime, that's going to make it very hard to get food,” you point out but she shakes her head. “Oh?”

“I have some plates set aside for us for later, before bed, Ryu-chan.” She looks at you with a twinkle in her eye. “Just for us.”

You can't help but smile. “Yes, your highness.”

“Now go greet your friend. She seems a little strange, but she's really funny.”

“More than just really, Kiki-hime.” You slip your tail around her ankle and give her another slow kiss, reveling in how much better you feel after each one. She giggles and lightly pushes you away as she goes to assist her sister in getting some food.

“....is when she said 'well, I could do that, but if I did that, it would be your head I gave to him!'” The giggles and blushes around the table are a great indicator that she's telling some of the more off color stories in your past, before you understood what men and women got up to in the bedroom. Typical, really. Chisato sits up as you walk over. “Ah, Aoi-chan! I didn't see you back there!” Chisato kip-ups out of the sofa and catches you in a tight hug about the neck, which you let her do because trying to stop her would have required use of your hands. “Your cute kohai there said you'd be out, but I told her you've been out of the closet for years!”

“I was only IN the closet because I had no idea there was anything except a closet, Chi-chan. Thank you for getting here.” She snaps her fingers. “Oh, I knew that joke was coming before you did.” Chisato laughs and slaps you on the arm in a thoroughly friendly manner, while Kiku-chan looks shocked and Yuuhi-chan is giggling almost as much as Yui would be. Shoko snorts her amusement and goes back to her bowl of noodles. Inau-san seems terrifically amused as well, though she's smiling rather than laughing.

“So, I hear you need your old sukeban's help, huh? You tell me who you want vanished and I'll vanish them for ya! Tho' you're the one who looks like an assassin!”

You smile sweetly. “Actually, I'm going to do you a favor, Chi-chan, and you're going to thank me for it, if you don't go stark raving mad.” There are giggles and soft laughs around the table, but Akari is looking at you because you're smiling. You're smiling in a way that seems to have alarmed at least three of the people listening, as a matter of fact. “I'm going to hook you up with a hot little cutie just your type, and she's going to rock your world so hard you're not going to know which way is Yomi and which way is heaven....her name is Peta-chan.”

The room is suddenly dead silent, except for Chisato, who looks interested. “Oh yeah? Why don't you tell me more about this hot little cutie....”

Thank you all for readign and playing, and my apolgies for the delays in psoting, which for once is not my fault.

We continue Friday morning, 9:00 am PST with the scandalous revelation of Ryukusa's plan to hook up Chisato with an everloli fox spirit child. *

*Though which part of that is scandalous is up for grabs.

Thanks for the thread!

> and she's going to rock your world so hard you're not going to know which way is Yomi and which way is heaven

Oh boy. It's hard to tell if Ryukuza is the worst or the best friend.

Who am I kidding? Chisato is probably half- crazy enough for this already.

Thanks for the thread. Looking forward to dinner a lot! Most shocking cliffhanger in ages? Hahaha.

>>37553883
Definitely best. Peta is prime cuddling material.
>>
>>37553734

Is humans in relationship with spirit children a bad thing, in a "cosmic order" way, or is it just social expectations that make it shocking?
>>
>>37553734
That doesn't talk.

I actually napped and lost a chance to vote. Thanks, XS.
