September 15th, 2053.

The name you've claimed for yourself is Maryland, and you are a part-human, part-Abyssal “kanmusu” now serving alongside other veterans of the Second World War. While you've all got the bodies of teenaged to twenty-something girls, the process that brought you to that point was a bit more... “complicated” than in most cases.

You have no real experience with any of the others, aside from your own unit. Nagato and her sister Mutsu are catching up with their fellow IJN battleships, Kongou is spending time with her own sisters, Saratoga has been chatting up the USN CARDIV like it's been years since she's seen them (which is probably the case), and Prinz Eugen has been introducing her old friends Tirpitz and Bismarck around.

But nobody really knows you here in Mutsu. Even the US BATDIV teams present shied away pretty soon after seeing the two little horns on your forehead.

>Go find Nagato and Mutsu. They're the ones who know you best.
>Find Prinzessin: Tirpitz and Bismarck are more likely than the others to give you a fair shake.
>Kongou's sisters Hiei, Haruna, and Kirishima all seemed like fun.
>Saratoga's your friend. She can vouch for you with CARDIV, at least.
>This thing with BATDIV is bullshit... maybe Ari will listen to you even if Carolina and Wash don't.

Also, as an aside: I plan to test out a new dice rolling system, since there will likely be a fair number of chances to put it to the test in a low-stakes scenarios tonight.

It'll be 3d10, best of three, with a visible DC. If all three rolls match or beat the target, it's considered a critical success, two rolls matching or exceeding is a regular success, one roll matching or exceeding is a failure, and no good rolls is a critical failure (if the scenario can reasonably allow such a thing). No "Fate Points", for now.

I don't know about that. With the grouping of rolls from people rolling only a few seconds apart, I think failures are more likely than successes.

There are three USN carriers on the grounds of the kanmusu-dedicated base outside Mutsu, called the "Aomori Kanmusu Fleet HQ" by the JMSDF. There's Sara, her sister Lexington, and Midway: the other two are on patrol. All three are probably out on the field back behind the barracks, practicing their launching and recovery maneuvers.

So that's where you head, ignoring glares and stares from both regular personnel and the odd IJN girl.

Sure enough, you find USN CARDIV's members out on the grass field, which looks like a re-purposed soccer pitch, firing some kind of crossbow bolts at the shields on each other's off arms.

Saratoga looks like she's just as focused on not getting hit as the others: even if those are foam-tipped or something, they look like they could sting.

A pair of smaller girls that are watching them seem to notice you however.

Not wanting to bother Sara and her companions just yet, you let your eyes follow the two destroyer-girls as you force as pleasant a smile as you can.

The duo look a lot alike, probably sisters you figure. They haven't got any of their combat gear, but they still have a few distinguishing features: while both are on the small side, with short, almost tomboyish haircuts, one has black hair and the other a light shade of gray. Their uniforms look a lot like adapted midshipmen's peacoats, with matching ties and skirts: the black-haired girl wears a drab fore and aft cap with a unit patch of some kind on it, while her gray sister wears the usual officer's cap.

And neither looks happy to see you.

"Hi, you two!" you greet cheerfully, leaning forward to bring yourself a little closer to their eye level. "Who might you be?"

The girl in the peaked cap regards you cautiously. "Wanna ask you the same thing. Forget being too white to be Japanese, you're too white to be human."

"And are those horns?" her companion asks, reaching out to poke one. "Those don't look like radio equipment. It almost makes you look like... like... oh, crap."

Her eyes widen in sudden understanding, the mental cogs finally catching and grinding rapidly into motion.

How do you want to defuse this situation?

"Yup!" you admit cheerfully, trying to cover up how nervous the whole situation is making you. "I'm Maryland, BB-46. Pleased to meet you..."

It looks for a moment like both of the girls are contemplating screaming for Sara as much as you are, before the black-haired one finally nods at you.

"Robinson, you can call me Robin."

Her gray-haired sister gulps. "I'm Luce."

"Robin and Luce, huh? You two are Fletchers, right?"

Both girls nod, still visibly unnerved by the fact that you're quite clearly an Abyssal. "So, are you..." Luce continues quietly.

You nod. "Used to be. I guess you can say Sara and her unit "rescued" me? Or maybe that they helped me rescue myself? Not really sure how to describe it."

"So, you're not here to attack Sara, Lex, and Beast?" Robin presses, putting on a brave face.

You shake your head. "Good heavens, no. I was a bit lonely, with my only four friends hanging out with their sisters and all."

"People treat you different 'cause of your horns, huh?" Luce observes.

>Yeah, they do. And I think they always will.
>I'll win them over, same way I did with Nagato, Sara, Kongou, and Prinzessin.
>I don't mind. They're entitled to dislike me.

You shrug. "Probably," you admit. "And some of them always will. But I'll win some of them over too, same as with my friends."

The way that came out... although you're ultimately hopeful, there's still some disappointment in your voice. Honestly, you're still sad that your fellow battlewagons have been avoiding you when even your one-time enemies Nagato and Kongou were so ready with their acceptance.

"I see," Robin replies thoughtfully, no longer visibly afraid of you.

"SARA!!!" she shouts.

Somewhere in the distance behind Robin and Luce you hear a loud *thump* and a startled cry of "shit!" from Saratoga.

"Ah, Mary!" Sara greets you warmly as she comes to join Robin and Luce near you. You can't help but notice a bruise rising on her left leg where one of those bolts must have hit her. "I see you met Luce and Robin, they've just been seconded to CARDIV as escorts! So what's up?"

Sara frowns as you suddenly turn your head and break eye contact. "I hate to admit it, but I was starting to get kinda lonely without you guys. I don't actually know anyone else around here."

"I get it," she replies quietly. "Sorry, I guess I kinda forgot none of your sisters would be here."

You shrug, feigning nonchalance. "Hey, at least I've got the other battlewaggons, you know? Kindred spirits, old friends..."

"They're avoiding you, aren't they?"

"Like the plague, yeah," you admit.

The blonde sighs heavily, rubbing her bruised leg. "Those idiots... those damned, arrogant... here. Lemme introduce you to the team."

Saratoga places a hand firmly on your shoulder, leading you back towards Lexington and Midway. You immediately pin Lex as Sara's sister: they both lean towards a curvy figure, with similar facial features and the same eyes. Lex, however, has got curly red hair instead of Sara's blonde ponytail. As for Midway, she's broad-shouldered and keeps her hair a mousy brown. Her "shield" has a strangely triangular bulge on its side, even more slab-like than those of her peers and apparently heavier as well. No wonder the Fletchers call her the "Beast".

"So this is Maryland?" Midway frowns. "The half-Abyssal girl you mentioned?"

"Go easy on the girl," Lex growls softly. "It's not her fault. If anything, the Pentagon were the ones who gave up on her."

Sara, however, wallops them both upside their heads. "Doesn't matter what she is, just who she is. And who she is is my friend."

"Sorry, sis," Lex mutters. "I guess I'm still pissed about Enterprise."

"Hey," her sister replies, her tone much more comforting. "Come on, let's take a break. I think we could all use a pint to talk over, yeah?"

Midway shrugs, turning to leave the field for the base's kanmusu-only club. "I guess it'd give us a chance to get to know 'Mary' a bit better."

Sara gives you a wink and a thumbs-up as you follow.

Yeah, all this silence? Not really making you feel more comfortable with the whole situation.

"So," you blurt out, "how do you all like Japan? I mean, being in it and all? As American warships?"

"Excuse me?" Luce replies in confusion.

"I mean," you gesture inarticulately, "we're warships... from America. Wouldn't really think we'd be too popular around here?"

"It's fine, mostly," Robin shrugs. "I have nothing against the Japanese, though sometimes I don't understand how they fight."

"They still prone to the old kamikaze routine?" you ask. Luce shudders involuntarily.

"My crew tried saving some of their sailors once," Robin replies carefully, "during the war."

"How'd that go?' Luce asks, clearly eager to change the subject from kamikazes... you recall vaguely that Sara mentioned kamikazes did a number on several American warships. No wonder the memory would make Luce uncomfortable.

"They chose to drown rather than accept our help," Robin explains. "I still don't get that."

Sara frowns. "We all saw some shit, I guess. You okay, Luce?"

"Yeah," the gray-haired girl replies nervously. "Just... remembering their suicide planes shook me up a bit."

Ah, that explains it... she was probably sunk by one. You regret bringing it up now, and make a mental note that some of your peers may not be as comfortable with their previous lives and deaths as your friends seem to be.

"And your hat?" you ask Robin, trying to change the subject for Luce. "Where'd that come from?"

"Rangers. I helped move some of 'em around when we re-took the Leyte."

"It looks good," you admit. "They give you that as a gift?"

Robin nods with a grin. "Yup. Surprised they had one that fit!"

Finally, after a surprisingly strained conversation, you find your group within sight of the Club.

Inside there are an assortment of other kanmusu, mostly from the IJN by their looks. A few take note of your arrival, greeting Sara and her team and mostly ignoring you. There are a few faces that seem to acknowledge you however.

Most notable among those are Prinzessin, Tirpitz, and Bismarck. Surprise, surprise, the latter two are drinking.

"AH!" Bismarck cries, waving you down. "You! The dark-haired fraulein with the little horns! How would you like to play a little game of darts mit uns?"

"We're bored," Tirpitz complains in a level tone, "nobody wishes to play."

You catch movement out of the corner of your eye: it's Prinzessin, and she's gesturing silently at her right hand for some reason. Then she shakes her head, just slightly.

"How do you feel about a small wager, fraulein?" Bismarck asks you, writing down her score from the last game with Tirpitz before sorting a few bills onto the table. It looks to be the equivalent of about $10 in Yen... and then you see it. She wrote left-handed, but seems to be throwing righty.

That's what Prinzessin's warning was: Bismarck is going to try and hustle you.

You shake your head. "Sorry, I don't actually have any money," you admit.

"You don't?" Bismarck asks incredulously. "Well, I suppose we must make this into a duel of honor, ja?"

"That would be fine," you counter, grasping the first dart in your right hand. You see that your opponent has done the same.

Her first throw is decent, but not spectacular: Bismarck must be pretty confident in her aim if she's this good off-handed. Your own throw sees you two points behind her.

"Ah, schade," she taunts you lightly. "Surely you can do better than that?"

Her own second dart goes sailing left, netting her only a few more points. Your throw isn't much better, effectively tying you up.

And that's when it happens.

"Fraulein," Tirpitz asks quietly. "Are you going to throw right-handed all night?"

Bismarck's face twists into a confident smile. "That's true, schwester," she admits, switching the last dart into her left hand. "What would I do without you, liebes Schätzchen?"

The last dart leaves Bismarck's hand notably faster than the first two, embedding deeply into the board with a resounding thump. Damn, is she good.

Her grin is short lived, however, as you too shift your third and final dart into your left hand. "Rule one, fraulein? Never kid a kidder."

The dart leaves your hand, quickly finding the bullseye.

"I... what?" Bismarck blinks in surprise as you hear a whoop from Sara's table.

Tirpitz says nothing, but her raised eyebrows tell you she's impressed.

"Good game, ja?" you offer. "Lemme get us something to celebrate with."

You quickly snag her money off the table, striking out for the nearby bar amid howls of laughter from several tables in the room: seems that half the IJN is happy to see Bismarck taken down a notch. Even she's started chuckling to herself at this point.

After you order an American lager of some kind, which comes in a bottle with the Stars and Stripes on it, Prinzessin sits next to you.

"Did you get my hint?" she presses excitedly.

"Sort of. I also saw her write with her left hand."

"She's been pulling that stunt on any battleship that's come through," she explains. "Musashi figured it out and played her to a draw, Nagato let Mutsu play but insisted on stopping early after the second double-or-nothing round."

"So that's how they've done it?" you muse. "Tirpitz did the second round off-hand?"

Prinzessin nods happily. "They got Ise and Kongou, though... Kongou actually asked for a rematch, too. If I hadn't told her explicitly they'd have gotten her twice!"

"How about any of the Americans?"

"They tried with Carolina, but I don't think she understood the game," your friend recalls. "She insisted on throwing all three darts at the same time, so Bismarck gave up."

"That sounds a lot like her, yes," you sigh. "She hit anything, at least?"

"Not really."

Sounds like Carolina hasn't changed a bit. She always was one for speed over accuracy, but damn could she squeeze off rounds fast when she was on her A-game. They didn't call her the Showboat for nothing: the muzzle flash made for one hell of a lightshow.

On your way back, you're surprised at the reception you get. Midway forces a bottle into your hand with a grin, you're accosted by IJN girls with names like Naka, Mogami, Tenryu, and Tone. It seems like suddenly, people who wouldn't have paid you any mind just yesterday are in a rush to treat you like a normal human being. Finally, after managing to deposit your beers on Bismarck's table and earning a sigh at your choice of brews for her, you hear a loud whistle.

The shipgirls around you stand at attention as an older-looking girl steps into the Club with a silver whistle around her neck. White elbow gloves, a white uniform with a pinkish-red skirt, and long brown hair carefully arranged behind an ornate radar headset: the newcomer's appearance is certainly striking. More interesting to you, however, is her bearing.

She possesses the same stern, yet serene attitude you know from being around Nagato, but you sense that of the two this girl is probably the more powerful.

"Miss Maryland?" she greets you firmly, but politely. "I am Yamato. I would have you speak with me privately."

Somehow, you get the feeling that refusing this woman won't be an option.
