Rolled 8 (1d10)

You’ve set out on your journey with Lisa once again after turning in those bandits to the guards yesterday. You managed to get an early start in the morning, and you were making good progress so far.

Your second departure was a bit more awkward than the first, mainly due to repeating the steps you went through yesterday. Hopefully nothing would happen that would delay you again.
Lisa seems to have picked a different trail for the two of you to follow this time around, one a bit further south. It’s a nice change of scenery, and it puts you a bit further away from where those bandits said their camp was.

You consider how to busy yourself as you walk along the trail.

You decide to check up on Riolu again. He seems to be even more chipper than yesterday, possibly due to the fact that he got a bit of real fighting in. He didn't seem to overly enjoy combat, but you think he did like it for the exercise.

The fresh air and long walks seemed to be doing him good as well. Sometimes you wonder if he was more interested in aura or in just keeping in shape. Come to think of it, the two of you hadn't made much progress on that recently In fact, you hadn't made much progress on aura with any of your monsters lately.

The forest is mostly quiet, and you make good progress, stopping around noon for a quick meal, then continuing along your way as the day drags on into evening.

It as getting a bit late, but you could still make some progress if you wanted

After finding a small clearing, you being setting up camp rather early into the evening. You start setting up your tent while Lisa begins gathering firewood. Once Bagon lights up the fire rather handily, you've got a good camp set up for the night.

It's then that you hear a rustling from the bushes nearby, as out of the treeline emerge four short monsters. They're red in color, and seem to be absolutely covered with small knives.

They bare their arms in a rather menacing manner, pointing the right towards your group and keeping the left back for defense. Whatever these things were, they had at least a basic concept of swordfighting.

Your group is already readying a defense, Lisa hanging back as you and your monsters move forward.

There's a brief lull as you debate how to handle things.

"Hey," you call out, "We don't want any trouble. What is it you want?"

Your sudden conversation seems to startle them, as though they weren't expecting you to try diplomacy. You notice them start to converse amongst themselves, as though they're trying to decide on something.

It's rather interesting watching them chatter, occasionally sliding one of their blades against another for emphasis. Whatever they wanted, they can't seem to agree on it anymore.

You're not really sure what to do about this.

You move forward past your monsters, extending your hand towards them calmly. Once one of them notices your approach, he alerts the others, who hurriedly get back into their line and stance.

You close your eyes and focus, trying to reach out and connect with them. You can sense that they're all focusing on one thing now. It seems like their thoughts are on an image being drawn into the dirt. You see a large circle, with four crosses drawn in a line near the base. Two more have been drawn on each side, along with arrows pointing inward. At the top of the circle is a much larger cross inside of another circle, with an arrow pointing straight down.

It only takes you a moment before you realize what you're looking at, and your eyes flash open, and you wheel about as you rush back towards your friends. It's at that moment when four more of the creatures leap out from the treeline to the sides and rush toward your party, and a single much larger creature dashes towards Lisa from behind. It's a bit shorter than you are, though it's absolutely covered in blades of various shapes and sizes.

You needed to act fast.

Thinking quickly, you step into the shadow of an overhanging branch and lunge forward, appearing in Lisa's shadow behind her. The armored monster seems surprised by your sudden appearance, though still manages to move slightly out of the way of your blade. It still bites into his torso, though he forces himself to stay standing.

After he leaps back, he soon starts up his attacks once again, swinging both his arms in rapid succession to try and slice you. However, you manage to parry or deflect his strikes, even getting a few cuts on his shoulders and legs. One of your swipes lands cleanly on his left arm, which then hangs uselessly at his side. This forces him to back off, taking a more defensive stance, which gives you the opportunity to observe how the rest of your group was faring.

Frogadier was squaring off against two of the smaller ones on the right, using the trees and his bubbles to his advantage. Their blades were able to cut through the fog of bubbles cleanly, though they weren't having any luck while the frog kept up his height advantage. Lisa seems to be firing arrows at the two of them, which don't cut them despite the metal tips, but clang against their armor in a painful sounding manner. One of them turns to face the annoyance and gets an arrow directly onto its forehead, and though it doesn't penetrate its armor, it does knock it out cold.

Riolu was fighting one on the other side, and you can see another which is being harried by Pidgeotto and Sentret. The one Riolu is fighting can't seem to land a single strike, constantly being deflected by the bony pads on his arms. He almost seems to be toying with him, but eventually gets serious and kicks him aside into a tree, knocking him out in one shot. He then moves on to assist the other two with theirs, who was having no success chasing the two nimble monsters.

Bagon has decided to rush the four original creatures you saw earlier, breathing a large gout of flame to break up their formation. This causes them to panic and scramble, though soon enough they form again into a circle around Bagon.

Your attention is caught once again by the creature in front of you, who seems to have adjusted his stance, now mimicking yours with his one good bladed arm. You offer a quick salute, with your blade, which the creature returns. The two of you then begin advancing on one another, keeping a close eye on each others' footwork. After a few test of your defense, the monster goes for a powerful lunge, but you're ready for it, beating his blade aside with yours. As his arm catches against your blade, you see the sharp edge on his arm crack and shatter from where your sword strikes it. Not wanting to waste the opportunity, you preform a riposte of your own, lunging towards the creature's head. It ducks down as you do so, and your sword strikes against the large yellow crest on its skull, shattering through it as well.

Completely devoid of any method to attack you, the creature slumps down to the ground, kneeling on one knee, head hung low.

You turn back to watch how the battle is proceeding, and it seems that Riolu has taken out his remaining opponent, and Lisa has knocked out the last one Froakie was hassling.

You look to the edge to see three of the four creatures still standing, though they're no longer surrounding Bagon. In his place is a large shelled monstrosity.

"SHELGON!" the beast cries out before billowing a torrent of flame at one of the remaining monsters. The other two rush in to attack, but their blades clang harmlessly against the beast's iron hide. It wheels about with ponderous speed, ramming into one before letting lose another spurt of fire at the other. Once all of them lay defeated, it lets loose another roar of victory.

"You," you say, pointing your sword at the kneeling creature, "Are going to take all of your friends, and leave us alone, understand?"

The monster gives a slow nod before standing, moving over to two of the fallen creatures, shaking them awake. The three of them gather the remaining six, gathering them up and moving north into the woods. Your group waits a few minutes more, but eventually you're confident that they've left.

"Well, that was exciting," Lisa says, moving close to kiss you on the cheek, "Thanks for watching out for me Ceil."

"Anytime," you smile back.

Fortunately the battle passed by quickly, so your campsite was still in good shape. There was still some light left in the day though, so you consider what to do with your remaining time.

You decide to check up on Shelgon first, Lisa following behind you. Seems like she's a bit curious as well.

"Hey," you say, "How are you feeling?"

The response is yet another roar of triumph, and you take the moment to examine Shelgon further. It's face and mouth are rather heavily shaded by it's shell, though when it opens its mouth you can still see a few razor sharp fangs. The shell itself seems to be the same material as it's former helmet, though it looks a bit thicker. It's legs are about the same size as it's old ones, which you find odd. It looks much heavier than before, and you wonder how it's holding up the extra weight.

"Do dragons normally make cocoons?" you ask Lisa, "I thought only bugs did that."

"I'm not sure," Lisa replies, "I know Gibble don't, but there's not that much information on Bagon. Not many people raise them due to how dangerous and stubborn they can be."

Which meant you didn't know if Shelgon was going to get any bigger or not. You consider starting a journal on this sort of stuff so it'd be easier to remember, but you don't have that much information yourself, nor do you have a journal on your person. Maybe you could stop by the captial on the way back and get some books on the subject.

The rest of the evening you spend with Shelgon getting him used to his new form. He's a bit slower while moving now, but he's much stronger. He still has the ability to move surprisingly quickly when he wants to, able to turn and face directions rather easily. Eventually though, the sun sets, and you decide to call it a day.

As you head over to your tent, you realize that neither you nor Lisa ever set up her tent. That might be a problem.

"Hey Lisa," you begin, "I think we forgot to set up your tent."

"Huh?" she asks, glancing up from her Sentret, "Oh yeah, I guess with all the excitement I kind of forgot."

"Yeah, plus it's kind of late,' you continue, "Do you want to just sleep in my tent instead?"

"Um well, I guess," Lisa continues, fiddling with Sentret's paws as she speaks, "As long as you're okay with that."

Once the two of you set up your bedrolls, you make sure your monsters are situated outside before hitting the hay.

The next several minutes feels like it drags on for quite a while, as you and Lisa keep glancing over at eachother. Whenever you close your eyes, you just get the strange urge to open them and check if she's asleep, and you assume that she was doing the same.

After a while of this, you eventually feel something slip into your fingers and grasp them tightly, interlocking and weaving together with your hand. You open your eyes to find Lisa's eyes closed with a content smile on her face, and glance down to see her hand entwined with yours. You smile to yourself as you shut your eyes, finding an odd sense of peace in the sensation, and soon you find yourself drifting away to sleep.

In the morning, you find yourself much closer to Lisa than the previous night, your held hands being squeezed between each others' chests. Lisa still seems to be asleep though.

You untangle your hand from hers, slipping out of the tent and outside. Your monsters seem to mostly be up already. Frogadier is still sleeping in a tree, but Riolu seems to be up training as usual. Fortunately, Shelgon is also awake, so you get his help in rekindling the cooking fire.

You fish through your gear for a pan and set it up over the fire, preparing to cook up some sausage to go with the cheese and biscuits you brought. You also give some of the raw sausage to Riolu and Shelgon, though you're not sure if it's enough for it's increased size. However, it seems content, laying back down on the ground afterwards. Still, you might need to hunt for some more food to keep your supplies up.

As you wait for the sausage to cook, you decide to sneak in a bit of aura practice, focusing and looking at the surrounding area. You spot Lisa still sleeping in the tent, and then focus outwards further through the forest. You spot a few pinpricks of auras that stand out from the usual type you see in the forest, though fortunately none of them match the creature you spotted yesterday. You're also finding it a bit easier to make out distinct shapes of these far off auras, spotting things you can identify as deer or foxes. Before you can investigate further, you feel a tap on your shoulder, and open your eyes to see Lisa standing next to you.

"Good morning Ceil!" she smiles, "Sausage for breakfast?"

"Yep," you say, sliding the links off of the pan onto the small plates with the rest of the food, "Help yourself."

You've never been an excellent cook, though sausage in the morning was difficult to mess up. The biscuits are a bit dry, but the meal is very satisfying. Lisa feeds some of the raw sausage to Pidgeotto, while Sentret seems content to nibble on some seeds it found. With your party rested and fed, you decide that now would be a good time to break camp.

After your gear is packed, you continue towards the east. Your pace is a bit slower thanks to Shelgon, but you were also having it carry some of the heavier gear. It didn't seem to be bothered by the extra weight at all, meaning you and Lisa had a lighter load to shoulder. Not even all of your other monsters sitting on top of it seems to trouble Shelgon, and many of them rest on it as you travel.

You decide to spend your journey in silence, though the forest seems oddly quiet today. You don't spot anything that would look like trouble, and nothing seems to be following you either.

At midday, you stop for lunch, still keeping a close eye out for any trouble. You stop by a stream to refill your water canteens, and it's a nice chance to get a fresh drink as well. After a rather uneventful meal, you continue on the trail.

You and your party press on for a few more hours, a bit later into the night. You make good time, and you reach the edge of the forest proper and arrive at the northern swampland.

You choose a relatively dry area to set up your camp, taking care of the tents as well as preparing dinner, which is a modest stew.

"So Ceil," Lisa starts, "There are two main ways we could go through the swamp. We could either go through the southern half, which is shorter, but it's pretty much all swampland. Instead, we could also go to the north. There's a small village in that direction where we might be able to stay and get more supplies, but it'll probably take twice as long to go through."
