Food, such an important resource that is almost taken for granted, but for you, no for your it cannot be ignored. Your reserves of nutrients are running perilously low, and by day break tomorrow your hive will be starving. Fortunately you have managed to build a secure base and expand your natural defenses against the environment, however that would little to abate the coming hunger. Your thoughts shift as you parse all the information you have been gathering up to this moment, from your less than gracious landing to having crawled into the cave, only one large predator was discovered. Perhaps such a beast could be hunted, if it us not territorial and by definition spread out into large areas. Foraging has brought some small returns, nothing that could feed your hive in the long term, perhaps not abate the coming crisis.

Your thinker chimes in, “Sister I have completed my task!” You are most pleased with your sibling, from its navigational skills to its abilities researching into various topics, he has been of incredible help. And now you have managed to peer into the Vespers, which is what you are calling the local flying mammals. It appears their wings structure is rather simple enough to recreate, and it is used as a sort of blanket, each one of the four wings are covered in capillaries and fat pockets, acting as radiators. The wings do not just freeze over, much like yours did. This could prove useful, and you have also identified genes that if active could increase the accumulation of fat by these creatures. But to properly breed them at an acceptable for livestock will require deeper research.

For a moment you hesitate, you could lay more thinkers, but then what of your resources? It would be a gamble, and perhaps, perhaps you will win that bet, or perish. Will you decide to be cautious or will you risk what you have at the moment. Perhaps you will not even pursue further research, you are just unsure as to how to proceed.

With a popping sound the eggs of your winter workers and your new miner drones hatch, you now have a large brood. With most of your workers quite busy, these new ones are a welcomed sight.

In that order.

All of them. Have them focus on sealing off any dangerous areas, closing off unexplored tunnels, building bridges over freezing rivers, and reinforcing any unsound caverns. We don't seem to need metals just yet and we don't want any more cave-ins.

>[] have winter workers forage for food.

Have them all do both. Forage in new locations we have yet to explore, but make sure we keep a minimum of 2 drones on watch at the entrance.

You have wisely chosen to have your miners secure the cave, after all worse than starvation would be to die in a cave in, they start securing the tunnels going towards the underground river, quickly putting pylons of chitin into the walls to create pressure, this stabilizes the cave and prevents a sudden shift, albeit it will not stop an earthquake, but then what would? Securing your entire hive will take sometime, but at least they have no need to touch the hatchery as your workers have already made it cave-in proof.

Current Construction
>Hatchery (1 day left)
>Throne room (2 days left)
>Securing Hive from cave-ins(1 day left)

Your lone thinker gets on with the task of analyzing the algae, the samples you have were frozen yesterday and the exterior layers are unusable as a result, but the interior layers of the balled mess you had brought back contains many viable samples. “I learn for SISTER!” This will take some time, a day perhaps two.

Lastly you have the newly hatched drones go out to forage for food, and to explore on their way, perhaps they can find some crop you could harvest? You are not sure if you wish this to be a quick expedition or a long one,it seems the days have spouts of wind here and there, and the nights you can only guess.

Going out for a quick jaunt has revealed nothing of interest and only meager scraps, this could have been of some use three days ago, but now? Now its almost insulting, what makes it worse is that these are your adapter workers, strong, fast, agile, and quite capable. And yet all they bring back are rotten fruits, frozen berries, and a few edible leaves. Worse still, one of the workers has become slow due to a paralytic agent in one of the foods, you can't even tell which one. And researching it would take time. “We are sorry mother.” You can't help but be angry, however, you cannot be angry at them, its not their fault that this place is so desolate.

Your workers make their way to the river without much issue, you have put the slowed worker as a sentry, and had the sentry replace him. The group reaches the river and starts to comb the area. There are plenty of trees nearby, by not all of them offer sustenance, only a handful seem to bear any fruits. Albeit many more nutrients have been gathered so far, nearly 30. This is better if still quite small, when a flutter leaves and a cracked twig call the attention of a worker.

Your lone worker approaches careful and what he encounters takes a moment to register, it seem like some sort of biped, although you cannot discern its features with one hundred percent certainty. The worker is directed to stay put and follow should the creature attempt to flee. Its cranium seems to be composed of an exoskeleton, it has sharp angular curvatures, certainly made to fight, likely by charging, its legs a bit more of a mystery. But upon the approach of your other workers its spooked, your lone worker sprints into action and tries to stop it by grabbing on, but with a sweeping motion of its head it knocks your worker down. The chitin plate armor cracked slightly, this will be not be an easy beast to tame.

It doesn't need any.
The sharp horns look deadly, so my guess is that they are not used for competing for mates, and their forward facing direction indicates they are used for attacking. The fin could be some kind of radiator or communication device to flash signals, or even a method of attracting mates. It doesn't have much of a camouflage to it probably runs down prey, potentially with others.

My best guess just from the picture is that it's a pack hunter.

The drone is hurt but you command it to follow and so it does. “For mother!” After a series of twists and turns you come to a clearing, the beast is waiting near as if daring you, and before you can register it your drone does silent, the connection is cut. In panic you order the others to hurry, quickly you find out what happened, there are three of creatures, and they are eating your drone. It was skewered by the two newcomers, you can see the fluids spread all over their horns. “KEEK, KEEK” The main one makes a shrieking sound, not unlike the one Vespers make.

An idea occurs, perhaps these creatures are attracted to sound more than usual, perhaps echolocation. You have one drone make noise and serve as bait, the others spread out and hide with the trees, as soon as the creatures charge, you will have them pounce and kill the attackers. The lead creature emits a high pitch sound, its different from before “KEEIP, KEUP, KEEK” They charge, just as you expected and you have your drones pounce. But just then you see the creatures turning to both sides simultaneously and skewer two of the drones, chitin cracking and giving way to the high calcium exoskeleton of the beasts. Your third drone manages to stab one the creatures that carries a now dead drone. Victory!

But fleeting, the lead beast has ambushed the drone that was serving as bait, with a flicking motion it dumps its body to the ground. It looks directly at your own surviving drone, “KEEK!” is sounds in disgust. You will not go down, not like this, the drone goes to stab again but the beast he is currently attached to drops on its side pinning the drone down. The other beasts come and stab at the drone until you loose all connection.

You are stunned, this was not supposed to happen, night approaches and your options are now quite diminished.

>you spend the better part of an hour designing a new type of drone, one that is better suited to the cold environment. With some extra layers of fatty tissue and chitin they should fare better, but just to make sure you add an organ to produce extra heat, endothermic workers, brilliant. But not yet enough, to protect the precious and fragile eyes a semi-permanent eyelid is added. It will act as a set of goggles, and in need retract to self lubricate with a lipid layer.

>extra layers of fatty tissue and chitin they should fare better,

They did not fare better....

That also mentions the possiblity of genetweaking the vespers into breeding stock. And I'm all for going FUCK PETA if the algae doesn't work as a food source unlock via research.

We can still do this we just lost to an apex predator we didn't expect to be able to hurt us. Those things were way more brutal then expected.

You heart is heavy with the loss of your children, and your workers to halt construction on the hatchery does not make the pain go away. Why has fate been so cruel, you can only hope your sisters if any live do so in better planets, planets were they can enjoy the warmth of a star upon their magnificent wings, something you still regret not having been able to do. The five working quickly go hunting for Vespers, you fear that perhaps you will eat all the little creatures, have none left to breed and then... Oh you cannot even imagine eating your own brood., such a dark image.

The workers quickly capture the prey and prepare the nutrient sludge, then they go back to their important task, you can't help but be angry.

It would have been one yes more so:

After much deliberation you have decided on how to better spread the resources you have at your disposal. It is high time that you invested in research, and while your sibling is quite good at his job, there is only so much that you can do with a single thinker, you need more than that. This planet offers so much to learn, and much is needed to be learned, of that you are now sure. The surprise the vocalizing beasts has given you was costly.

Fortunately they cannot fly, and your drones can be given that ability, at a cost but they can be made air worthy. This will give you a great advantage, you will be able to have scouts and sentries that can spot danger to your ground-bound drones, and it will be invaluable to avoid danger and hunt prey. Perhaps your future scouts can find plenty game elsewhere, you can only hope. But for that you need ground workers, you will replenish the dead.

And finally you turn your powerful mind to design warriors fit for this environment, you have no metal, but this is not a problem, you simply increase the amount of chitin armor and add an endothermic organ, the blades you make of hardened chitin, its not as elegant or as deadly as a warrior of metal, but it will do its job. And do it well, you have no worries on that front, warriors have seldom been easily stopped.

Use the castoffs from the digging effort and any rocky unusable bits of the pod to temporarily fill it.

Fill it in with rock until the hive can grow into a proper door.

Since we're the thread is over, I've noticed that this particular is Queen is much more... expressive and emotional than Red.

>>
>>37520226
Red hasn't been facing mortal injury and starvation on her first week Either.
>>
>>37520226
I actually tried to write the Red queen as a blank slate and used the player actions to build up a personality. Since you tended towards investigation, political intrigue, and espionage she is more composed and level headed, essentially channeling your inner shadowrunner.

The few things I included from the start was a bit of vanity and motherly love for her drones.

This queen, is desperate, working to make ends meet. And seeing her hive on the brink of starvation for days now. She just witnessed a pure massacre of her new Winter drones and had her legs utterly crushed, end up dragging herself into the cave. I say Major PTSD here.
>>
>>37520386
>>37520496
IMO, I see Red as someone who was supernaturally lucky at the beginning and eventually grew into a cunning and composed ruler who knew not to overextend herself .
The closest we probably came to losing with her was when Lyle wiped almost all of our Warriors in our first encounter with him.

This Queen on the other hand strikes me as someone who's booksmart and self-confident at first but repeated disaster and bad luck is surely breaking her.
