"Everyone! Form up!"
A group of about ten knights and several spotters line up at attention. This is the group that will be going on ground toward the wayward hero's camp.

Your group consists of three heroes, a pilot, and a rather confused knight. You'll be going by air to the camp, and hopefully spot any potential trouble for the ground crew ahead of time.

It feels nice to have a plan for once.

You are Jack Albator, fearless leader, and when the price is right, mostly a good guy all around. Today you're finally setting out to get to the bottom of a most devious plot to overthrow your kingdom! At least, that's what you tell yourself the plan was about. In truth, you don't really know why a hero from some distant kingdom decided to come to YOUR country and started trying to steal from YOUR castle. The expedition today should shine some light on the culprits. As well as let you know who needs to be pillaged.

The group who is going by ground was apparently assembled by Fritelli. They're a team specially picked for their tracking and scouting skills. You decided to leave this group alone instead of trying to manage it. This group is probably as good as it's going to get.

Which means the group who is going by air are the only ones you're going to manage. Right now it consists of Yuuki, who is only here because Alicot was able to distract Annetta. As well as Cody, who was covered in lipstick marks and hickies this morning, you're not one to judge. Finally, is Noel, a knight that you've known for all of a half-hour who is able to throw tornadoes. Which makes her a keeper in your eyes.
Oh right, and there's a pilot for the airship. Apparently Amaretti, the princess of Pastillage, didn't trust a person who she's known for only a day to sail her flying ship.
Of course you don't trust the pilot of the airship for the same reason. You've decided to not think about it.

Wait, you're going someplace with three people who don't know the land very well.
Plus, you may find some magic mumbo jumbo. Last time you found magic mumbo jumbo, you were completely lost as to what to do with it.

Okay, so you'll just bring Camille and-

Oh.
Oh wait.

Okay! You can salvage this! You'll instead bring Aligot! He's good with the magic, and he's good with knowledge of the land!
You sure hope he's good with heights.

Because if he isn't, you're going to have a serious problem.

Instead of thinking of that, you turn around and walk right into the castle. You gotta keep a positive attitude about everything that's happened.

--

The skies are clear, the winds are in your favor. This is an old sensation but welcome sensation.
It's amazing how different everything can be while remaining exactly the same.

You're currently several hundred feet above the ground, peering over the landscape of Biscotti. The blue of the sea that you're used to replaced with the endless expanse of greenery that expands all the way to the mountainous horizon.

It's shocking, the feeling of the cool breeze blowing through your hair. It's a sensation you've been used to since you were a young boy. Now, it feels like you've graduated from the seas to the skies.

Yuuki stands awestruck on the port side of the ship, staring toward the distant Ocean, Cody simply put his hat over his head and went to sleep at the center of the ship.
Aligot brought a book with him, and his pouring through it instead of enjoying the scenery. What a killjoy.

>Make Aligot enjoy the scenery whether he likes it or not!

Come on Lad, this is why Camille thinks you're a cold fish.
"Aligot, get yer nose out of that book!"

He looks up, confused why you're accosting him so suddenly.
"C'mon Lad, ye don't get a chance to ride on an airship every day, do you!?"
"Uh.."

He looks around, seemingly even more confused.
"I guess not?"
"Aye! So what're ye doing with yer nose in that book? Anything good in it?"

He sighs, "I just wanted to read something on the ride over."

That's when you grab his shoulder and walk over to the bow of the ship.
"Lad, we're here to watch out for the ground team. So why dun ye stay on watch and help us find what we should be lookin' for."

"Okay Jack... So what do you want to look for?"
"Well, fer starters, maybe ye can tell me what path the ground team is takin', and maybe where we should be lookin' for trouble."

He points down at the endless green, slowly you start to notice a kind of line that cleaves the treeline.
"See that line? We're only a few minutes ahead of the ground team. They're following that trail. Because it's a straight path all the way to the supposed camp, they can follow safely behind at a brisk pace."

That's useful information.
"What 'bout ambushes, fortresses, anything we should be on the lookout for?"
"None Jack, it's just woods and vines. We're still safely inside the barrier, so it's not like anyone can get hurt anyway."

Your vision looks up toward the horizon, off in the distance there appears to be some clouds gathering.
"How 'bout that, Lad?"

He peers off into the distance, but you can tell his eyes are no where near as keen as yours.
"Sudden raincloud, they happen this time of year on occasion."

Those sunshowers appear to be gaining in strength, only marginally as you approach.

That's a very bad omen, despite the fact that the storm clouds are getting denser and stronger, your pilot seems undeterred as he goes straight toward them.

Your captain would have whomped him if he caught one of his sailors trying to send a ship straight into stormclouds like he is.

The pilot stands at the back of the ship, wearing a thick leather cap that hides his ears and a thick woolen coat. He grips the ship's wheel with such stress and fervor that you're certain his knuckles are turning white.

"Ey Lad" You walk up to the pilot, and-
"I'm not a lad." She replies, irritated.

Oh... Well then.
"A-anyway, ye sure going toward those clouds is a good idea?"
"No." she replies plainly. "I'm not."
"Then why're we going toward them?"

"That's our flight path." She grits her teeth. "What's worse is that I'm pretty sure cloud buildup like that isn't natural."

"Wait, not natural?"
"No. It's not."

That makes you even more confused than before.
"Then, what is it?"
"I don't know, could be a squall that blew in, maybe a dust devil that has spun out of control, I really don't know and I would appreciate it if I had my space to think about it."

Yeah, you feel the same way after hearing that.

>"Yknow what Lass, Let's veer from the path and avoid it."
>"Damn the clouds! Full speed ahead!"

"Well Lass, if you're going to make a plan, I suggest ye do it."
Even you are beginning to feel the pangs of nervousness as your ship approaches the terrifying miasma.
The storm cloud continues to build in size and intensity. Closer, and closer the cloud seems to crawl along the landscape.

"Patience is a virtue!" She grips and pulls at a pedal by the wheel as the whole ship seems to lurch at her command.
"Then why're ye going TOWARD it, Lass?!"

"I'm not!"

You look over the starboard side of the ship, and you're in time to notice that the thick mass of trees at ground level are slowly going backwards.
"What the?"
"We're not going forwards into the storm! It's catching up to us!"

That's worrysome.
She leans over the wheel and glares at the now-frightened passengers.
"Everyone find something to hold on to!"

Within seconds, the storm has picked up speed in your direction and completely engulfs the ship in a hail of water and swirl of winterly wind.

The ship tosses and turns, which is extra frightening when you're 300 feet in the air. Not that getting thrown off a ship when you're at sea level during a storm wouldn't spell a similar fate anyway.

"Lass! What're ye doin'!? Yer going against the wind! That's gonna tear this ship to smithereens!"
"I can't-" She struggles and pulls at the wheel, she seems to be trying to use the wind to turn the ship around.

There's a dread sound, a tearing noise of fabric coming from above. You know that sound too well, it's the sound of the sails ripping in the wind.
"STAND ASIDE!" You bellow at the terrified girl as you push her out of the way.

>Cont.
>>
>>37519166
"Ye can't fight the wind! Ye gotta go with it and pray it takes you where ye want!"

Gently you pitch the nose back into the direction of the wind. If it wants to take you that way, you're not going to fight it. You're not sure what this thing has in terms of a rudder. It seems strong enough to barrel the entire lower half of the ship directly in line with the wind currents.

For a ship that you're not even sure should be able to stay aloft. It's surprisingly responsive to turn and maneuver. Maybe that's why the pilot was fooled into thinking she could still control the ship and force her way out.

The ship's toss slows down and makes way to the howling of wind as the bow slices through the gray wall. Buckets upon buckets of water drench the deck and everyone clinging helplessly to it.
You simply picture yourself to be like the Captain. Rain, shine, sleet, snow, he would never leave the helm.

Suddenly, the bow of the ship shifts. You brace yourself for a crash landing as a blinding wall of rain hurdles straight for your post. An entire barrier of water washes past you and drags loose cargo off the back.

Then, sunshine.

"The hell?" You say, gritting your teeth. Surely this must be a mistake, maybe a small hole in a larger storm. You've been through hurricanes that were not that violent, at least not violent enough to pick up in intensity so quickly and disappear without a trace.
You look behind you to see the gray swath twist and spiral before dissipating into a rainbow.

You glance over at the pilot and perform a quick headcount. Everyone seems to be okay, but the pilot seems more than a little shaken up.
"Ye okay Lass?"
"T-t-t-t-"
"Eh? Speak up"
"I DON'T KNOW" She bursts into tears and tries to hide her flustered face against the deck.

"Jack!" Aligot yells from the center of the rain-slick deck. "That was no ordinary storm!"
"Hey no kidding!" You yell back at him.

"Jack! What do we do!?" Aligot says, fright in his voice.
"How close are we to the camp!?"

He seems a little dizzy as he worriedly scans the horizon off the bow of the ship.
"I don't know!"

You sigh and point toward the original direction the ship was pointed. Off toward the starboard side of the ship.
"That way Lad! It's that way!"

Cody helps Yuuki to her feet as Aligot springs over to the correct side of the ship.
"Maybe ten more minutes! But Jack-"

He looks back with an extremely serious look,
"We shouldn't follow the path any longer, we should veer over the woods! It'll be harder to see us from the ground that way!"
"What's the downside!?"
"The ground team will probably make it there before we do! That's the downside!"
It's a risk you're willing to take.

You agree and survey the sails tangling around the airfoil of the ship. Surprisingly, aside from a few rips and tears, they seem to have made it.
Below you, there are a few pedals of unknown function at the base of the ship's wheel. You look over to the pilot, who is still distraught but is slowly gaining her composure.
"Lass! Which one of these raises our altitude?"
Wearily, she points at one of the pedals and gives a brief description of the two next to it. Apparently this ship can yaw at will.
It's like you're piloting a luxury liner with all these features, you feel spoiled.

Slowly, you gently pitch the ship onto a course that takes you far off the path and over forested land. You maintain this heading for roughly a few minutes, as fast as you can tame the wind currents to your liking.

Aligot picks up a water-drenched map and points to a location that you seem to have completely circled around.
"There's the camp! We can come in from behind and meet the ground scouts at the center."

That sounds like a plan if you've ever heard one.
Except, it would be a plan. If storm clouds weren't building up once again over that exact landing spot you had planned.

There's a distinct, audible gasp from everyone on deck.
Except there's more of a screeching whine from right next to you. The former-pilot stutters on her words before she quickly scrambles against the damp flooring and tightly hangs onto your leg with a white-knuckle grip.

"Lass. Seriously. Leggo"
That only makes her grab onto your leg harder.

The clouds build up in intensity once more, this time seems a lot more nasty than before. Howling winds buffet the sails, even from all this distance away from the cell. Booms and cracks are heard in the distance as silver lightning arcs and dances from the massive funnel cloud straight to the ground.

"NO NO NO I'M JUST DOING THIS FOR MY APPRENTICESHIP I DON'T WANNA DIE HERE LET ME DOWN!"
"Lass you're making Aligot look dignified! Stop!"

Noel rushes to the helm to try and pry her off your leg, but you instead tell Noel to take cover. You're certain it's going to fly in your direction any minute!

The funnel cloud seems to slowly pick up speed. You gently gain altitude in an attempt to fly right over it.

"Jack! Look!" Cody says, with excitement and relief.
Which is when you notice something, it's picking up speed in the opposite direction parallel to you. It's way off-course to intercept you.

Instead, the cone of the funnel touches right at the pathway leading toward the camp and rapidly starts to gain both speed and fury as it accelerates down the bald line in the trees.

The once minor squall is a full-blown tornado by the time it reaches your previous position over the pathway. It swallows dirt and belches lightning, slowly and slowly inching along the length of the pathway.

And just as the previous storm, when it gets too far away from the camp, it simply dissolves and falls apart. The mighty titan slowly starts to fall to its knees and disappear.

"Jack!" Aligot says, furiously searching through a small handbook, "That's Emblem magic! Beyond the shadow of a doubt!"

"How the hell can it be so powerful!?" You yell, well aware that you were able to throw a tidal wave not too long ago.
"Emblem magic can be combined! If several people cast it at once, the forces of nature play off one another!"

It can do that? You need to give Fritelli a talkin' to for not telling you about that sooner.

"I-is-is-is-" The pilot slowly starts to stand up and peek over the bow.
"Um... Um.."

"Give it a rest, Lass." You reach your hand over and scratch at the leather covering her ears. You can feel them scrunched up under the fabric.
She tries to say something, but coughs into a sobbing fit. Her arms wrap around you as she buries her face in your side. You continue to rub at the pointed sheets of fur that's buried under her cap as she continues to sob.

Aligot seems to perk up at the sudden danger, the unhewn child that you usually know has been replaced by a stern and competent man.
"Jack, the only reason that didn't come this way is because they can't see us! We should just leave and come back with an army!"
"We can't leave!" Cody interjects, "The ground team is still out there, who knows what will happen to them if we just abandon them!"
"Then at least get us on the ground! We're going to be chopped to confetti if one of those comes at us again!" Aligot shouts as he furiously re-ties one of the ship's bindings.

You hate being put on the spot like this, but you do agree that something has to be done. Cunning pirate Jack was never one to find himself cornered.
At least, when he could help it. Now might not be that time.

Have Noel power us through the storm, while we push away the water with our own power. If either of things can work, anyway.
>>
>>37521263
Can Aligot cast an illusion on the boat? Or maybe just a misdirection spell, something that will incline them to ignore us?

We need to get closer to land.
>>
>>37521481
He could but he wouldn't be able to maintain it very long

Illusion on person is easy, illusion on boat not so much.
>>
>>37521626
What could wind and water magic do for us?
>>
>>37521626
Hm. How about an air drop? Fly very high over the encampment, so much so that they won't notice us, then jump out and have the Tornado-knight arrest and control our descent to survivable levels.

It'll even give us an element of suprise.
>>
>>37521661
If you want some suggestions from me, Noel could, theoretically nullify a regular squall sent in her direction. Not so much so with the other added elements, and definitely not while standing on the bow of the ship. The other added elements add mass to the conglomeration, mass which she wouldn't be able to counteract on her own. Standing on a ship while trying to use wind magic probably wouldn't help.

But remember, You and Noel aren't the only two that know Emblem magic. Yuuki knows Ice Magic. I'll leave the rest to you.

>>37521677
That is so dangerous that I doubt that Jack, unless you guys do a series of persuasion tests, could convince the others to go along with you.

Their response when presented with this would probably be "Okay! sure! You just go first and we'll follow right behind you!". At least that's what I imagine Cody would say.
>>
>>37521746
Well if it's just us and Yuuki dropping down it would still help. Not like we need anything to break our gall anyway. The others can go land normally.

As far as magic is concerned... blast through with a combo sleet storm? Also, none of the others have magic?

Anyways, might be good to present multiple plan options at the start of next thread.
>>
>>37521746
We could combine Noel's and Yuuki's powers to send cold air towards the drop site, effectively choking out their ability to use tornadoes, as there would be no warm air to manipulate and use to create the tornadoes in the first place.
>>
>>37521870
Are you implying that we could deny power to a magic storm, by indirect restrictions via normal physics? Because I really doubt it works that way.
>>
>>37522003
I think magic in most systems has to at the very least draw from normal physics to work, so using them here would at worst weaken the tornadoes they're sending at us to where we could advance through them.
>>
>>37521855
>Anyways, might be good to present multiple plan options at the start of next thread.

I might do that.
Or, I could have someone else on board present a plan of their own.

>>37521870
You can't see it, but I'm giving you a thumbs up.

That is a perfectly valid plan that doesn't put anyone in immediate danger.

>>37522003
Ah. don't be so unsure. It depends on the elements involved in making the Tornadoes.

I can think of a few other roundabout ways of beating this encounter, with different combinations of the elements you have available to you.
