It hits my barrier, and the barriers of the others, at once. These things, whatever they are, even as legion are weak and empty. They break against the silence, the fire, the thunder. They break against the barrier of each Senshi I fight beside but cannot see.

As the charge clears beyond my veil of Silence, the crowd behind me erupts into noise. I can see toward the base of the tower, and witness the conflagration there where the youngest of us step into the fray. I know what will be asked of me, and pray that I do it right this time. That I do not make the same mistakes I made before. Even if those were different circumstances, that I failed her remains upon my conscience.

There is another show of light from their fledgling powers, and another wave of the frail dark surges toward us. This line will be held, the enemy here is unlike that which has been described to me as part of the current danger. No matter. They will fail.

I look up to see a brilliant pulse of light above the tower, as a silhouette is thrown clear and plummets to the earth below. My heart tightens, I know. I know who falls as the pulse of light condenses and prepares to explode. If I abandon this post, then the innocent will suffer and die.

A golden light spears by overhead, the beginnings of an enormous power, and curls to the sky beneath where the girls are fighting. Rushing up and past the lower observation deck she intercepts her fall. This light is warm, and I understand its source as Sailor Moon had explained to us earlier, like the sun.

As they drop to safety, a terrible form begins descending the tower. I feel the power, and it is both of the darkness that gathers and of the power so described to me. Four pulsing beats of anger and rage.

We are the line. I will have faith in her.

Quest Start

“I’ve got you!” cries Keiko as she snatches you midfall from your plummet to likely death from atop Tokyo Tower.

Her gloved arms wrap around you, her forward momentum dropping down as she matches your downward speed and slows your descent. Something roars in a deafening tone, reverberating through the tower and your bones. Your softened fall is still fast as you land with her amid the conflict Keiko's light seems to drive back the inky black figures, hunched with glowing yellow eyes. Jadeite Knight and Nephrite Knight form up beside you as Keiko releases you to the firm footing of the lower observation deck.

"Sailor Sol in her lovely shining debut, reporting for duty," she quips to the lot of you with a wink as the dark creatures across the platform sink flat into the shadows on the walls and floor and skitter away in a manner reminiscent of cockroaches. They flit about at the edge of her light; it doesn’t seem to hurt them, they just don’t seem to like it.

"Glad the calvary showed," Midori laughs as she sheathes her long dagger with a flourish before turning to you, "was expecting it to come from below, honesty,"

“Don’t relax just yet,” Kairi stretches and points her longsword up toward the top of the tower.


~Its coming,~ you growl.

Something immense looms over the edge above. No doubt the source of the earlier roar. It pitches forward in the distance above and plummets forward. The creature is huge, and you only catch a fleeting glimpse of it as it rockets past the observation deck and to the ground below.

It just passed the lot of you by. Why?

You are the Red Eyed Beast. A mask, an incomplete reflection of a broken person born of a young girl’s then impotent rage and desire for adrenaline. Deeper than that, her desire to have a heart that didn’t care so much about the terrible thing she thought she had done.

That girl is Mikage Chiba, second year high school student 15 years old. Before she needed you and the other masks she is prone to wearing she was the third sparkly bullshit champion of love and justice, Sailor Moon. Sometimes she dons a black kefyah and cape and pretends to be the mysterious her, Eclipse, to help the fourth Sailor Moon. The fourth Sailor Moon is in fact her little sister, Koyomi Chiba.

You aren’t alone anymore, as Mikage or as the Beast. There are people who call you their friend, people who you are letting either back or newly into your life.

Kairi Osaka, Mikage’s best friend, is back in her life. She doesn’t really like you too much but will do anything to protect her bond to Mikage, plus she’s getting a hang of things and is pretty damn handy with the magic powers that has been entrusted to her as your Nephrite Knight.

Midori Mori, a tormenting classmate of Mikage’s and a friend of the now retired mask of Miki. She’s an ex delinquent turned popular girl who participates in a Ganguro Fashion Circle. After circumstances concerning the safety of her best friend, now something more, she has become your Jadeite Knight.

Keiko Sugimoto, most popular girl in school and reincarnation of your mother’s first great enemy known as Queen Beryl. After saving her from the fate of her past two incarnations and getting her a new lease on life, it was discovered that her near possession by the Metallia entity left a stolen sliver of the Sun’s starseed resting in her soul. After harnessing this power she has become Sailor Sol.

Anyway, big ass monster just fell from on top of Tokyo Tower to ground level. You caught a good whiff of the roiling shadow energies within it. A pulsing blend of sweet and savory alongside the strange void you felt from the creatures of lesser darkness. In all likelihood its going after something on the ground, where your little sister and her Sailor Senshi are engaged in combat against the rabble.

Strange and eerie lights still pulse with magical energy atop the tower.

Well if destruction of the puzzle still counts as completion I'm hard pressed to think of those that aren't.

Rushing over to the rail, you gaze down at the rapidly dissipating dust cloud from the monster’s impact. Rearing up, you spy its body is a tangled web of thick and ropey black tendrils. It glares up at you with the same burning yellow eyes the smaller creatures have, and you catch sight of a gaping hole in its chest filled by four rhythmically pulsating cysts of pale flesh. You can feel the savory and sweet pulses of anger and hate from here. Four distinct flavorful pieces beating as a heart inside the empty monster below.

Gold flashes as a chain lashes against its side and its eyes are cast into the dust cloud and the creatures attention snaps back to whatever lies before it. A bubbling mist erupts from within the dark swirling detritus and clouds its vision with pure white fog. You hear the crash of thunder and the echoing of shinto prayers.

Yeah, they have this thing locked down for now. The least you could do is make sure there isn’t another one showing up, if that wild summoning is left unchecked who knows what could happen.

~They’ve got down there covered,~ you snarl and march toward the center of the observation deck, ~We need to make sure nothing else comes through up there,~

Your knights bow their heads as you leap into the superstructure of the tower, they of course follow suit. Sailor Sol burns brightly and ascends alongside the lot of you. Faster than the stairs or the elevator could have, you reach the upper observation platform as chaotic magical energies swirl and pull loose things about. At the center of the disturbance near where the spire pierces through the deck, the three sphere from before are overlain atop one another in an uneven manner, a thin slip into...something...exists at the sliver of space where all three overlap at once.

“Whoah,” whispers Kairi.

With careful steps you approach the floating spheres, the pulsing force growing against you, but you push onward. The exertion could have lulled you into exhaustion had you not slipped between in and been as hearty and hale as you are, though you still feel the outlying sapping this effect could have one someone the closer you got to the fractured point ahead.

The three spheres intersect, and you are inches away. Before you is a black vertical slit, that contracts and expands with the subtle beating of the three spheres. More than energy, they have solid mass and volume; and if you so desired you could push them to alter the shape of the rip in reality before you. A void in space where there should be solid matter.

Not a void...a door.

Out and around the observation tower, you see four points of light circling. Deep Red, Pale Blue, Hot Pink, and a Neon Green. Your big sister’s guardians? Their circling pattern spirals up to meet with a pink and white light above, most likely your elder sister Usa. A light spreads out across the area, they’re setting up a barrier.

Steadying yourself on the precipice, you gaze falls to the membranous surface of the fissured slit into reality. You let your eyes slide closed and reach out with your immaterial thoughts and presence. At first you feel emptiness, the void between and beyond. The hungry emptiness of the lesser creatures you’ve seen today and the great one your sister now fights below.

Beyond that mass of hungry nothingness, gnawing dark deeper than your own, there are voices. Thoughts across time and space that collide into you through the narrow passage you have found. Awarenesses, through distance immeasurable but side by side.

You’re younger and wearing a school uniform you’ve never seen before, a castle looms ahead. Its the first day of a new school year, and you’re a bit intimidated.

You’re older and in a locker room, affixing a black and tight carapace armor to yourself while Koyomi does likewise. That girl needs to get her head in the game and stop chasing the rabbit, you think, as you don the plexiglass face mask.

You’re walking with Hotaru to crash your mother and her friend’s Sailor Muscle Meeting, the ditz forgot to pay your cram school fees. You half expect to have to stand up for Kousagi if the other girls are picking on her again.

You’re pressing the barrel of the a fake gun against Usagi Tsukino’s forehead. She has the Imperium Silver Crystal. Once you get it from her, Puu can bring you home and you can save Mommy. You can save everyone!

You’re high above Tokyo Tower with your guardians, maintaining a barrier so your younger sisters can sort everything out. The light beneath you is worrisome, and reminds you of the many times you’ve traveled the Cherry Road. Just in case, you ready the Key of Space and Time and remind yourself of the invocation of Chronos to...something hurts inside your mind.

The girls nod, and Kairi scoops you up as the three of them begin their methodical and careful freefall leaps down the interior superstructure of the tower.

“What happened?” Kairi asks in worry as the usually proud and massive presence of the Beast curls within her grip.

You whisper up to her weakly that you’re hungry, she doesn’t hear. Closing the distance between her ear and your lips you speak again weakly, but change mid word. Fangs extended you surge forward and latch upon her neck as she tries to find footing on an orange girder. Stumbling a bit, she steadies herself as you drink deeply of her and take in her hurt. She gasps in surprise at the sensation.

Your words lancing into her at the restaurant, just how much faith and trust she has placed in you. Taking this pain, it doesn’t fill you. So you keep drinking. You root for upset, pain, or embarrassment that lingers within her. She is afraid of your sudden feast, and worried about your current state; so you sup upon it and calm her nerves. She enjoys your teeth and the sensation of her pain being drawn like poison from a wound, but that she likes it embarasses her. It isn’t the most flavorful negative emotion, but it will do. You keep drinking until you run out of pain to sup upon. And you’re still so hungry.

Opening your mouth you cry into her.

~Hungry,~ you murmur against your vanishing fang marks, ~So hungry. I need shadows,~

“What happened to you up there,” Kairi wonders aloud with a sudden even calm to her previous shock as she strokes your messy mane of black hair.

She shakes her head as Keiko and Midori return to see what happened, she explains your ravenous state to them as above the light gives way to sparkling chimes and an odd tonal sound.

Below the sound of combat continues, and around you on the tower are many of those void filled creatures. Midori manages to grab one, it struggles in her grip.

She and Keiko bring it to you as Kairi steadies you against the girder and holds you in case the meal or you thrash about.

“This is kind of scary,” Keiko admits, “I mean, I watched her take down Metallia...and I know she was going to bite my neck if things went to shit...but holding some struggling thing to her lips feels...weird,”

“Our shared definition of weird is subject to change daily,” grunts Kairi as she rubs her neck, “She needs this,”

And you do. Before its even close enough your mouth is open wide and you are straining and reaching for this thing. Even if it smells like a weird void...maybe it will sate your hunger.

You sink your teeth into obsidian flesh, and find nothing.

No emotion. Just emptiness and instinct. It too is hungry. It hungers for all emotion. In the brief instant you were connected, it wanted your emotion, it reached into your heart but was beaten back by the light of your starseed. It crumbles into black bubbles and dust on top of you, ash in your mouth.

Your fangs pulse and ache.

Like a bad dream, you drift behind yourself as though you were someone else as you sit bolt upright and then pitch yourself over the side of the girder. Plummeting down you leap off of the next one down and run near horizontal along its length toward your goal below.

Toward the easing of your suffering.

The trappings of the Red Eyed Beast fall away as you flit between shadows, cover, and the scrutiny of the world. Reemerging wrapped in a long black dress and with your hair long, unbound, and undisguised. By its own accord it folds into the familiar bun topped twintails that trail behind you. Plunging down into the cloud of Aiha’s concealing bubble spray, you land in a crouch below the curling mists and see the fight still joined.

Your eyes burn red.

Sailor Venus is on the ground, shakily regaining her footing with and hand pressed firmly against her head. Jupiter has her arms locked around the wrist of the behemoth you seek, straining to keep it from advancing on the downed girl.

Mercury struggles in the creature’s far grip, a bubble shell encasing the fist closed around her. Mars stands beneath the creature’s face, prayer strip held close and pulses with holy powers that rip against the surface of the creature as more tendrils emerge from within its black mass to fill the gaps so made.

Your younger sister, Sailor Moon, struggles to her feet a ways back with determination in her eyes. She is hurt, as are all the girls, but they are still alive. They are still fighting. Now...you straighten your blue skirt and check your hair in a passing window. Slowing your pace you head to the cafe.

Okay, you aren’t looking forward to the tutoring. You are looking forward to spending time with him. You blush lightly and smile as you catch sight of him. He’s waiting there, checking his watch.
