“Ismael tells me you were born in the Pa'vala, Jayashri. I intend on making a journey into the center of the wasteland at some point in the near future. Would you mind my asking what the Pa'vala is like? Do you have any advice for someone planning their first voyage into the deep desert?” You ask, speaking slowly and keeping your tone respectful. This woman of Ismael's seems to have something of a temper, you'd rather not set her off and risk losing your chance to gather information about the Pa'vala.

She glances towards Ismael briefly before responding. “I am unawares much to what Ismael having told you.” What is she even saying? It's damn near a foreign language. “Few years were spent by me in our sacred homeland. Captured very young was I, a girl of fourteen years.”

You don't know if you'd describe fourteen as very young. In the broad scheme of things, yes you suppose that's quite young. Practically though fourteen is only two years under marriageable age. Actually, that raises a question. How old is she now? You took her for somewhere in her twenties, but if she was captured at fourteen and Ismael bought and freed her almost two years ago, she may only be sixteen or seventeen.

You cast Ismael a questioning look before once more addressing Jayashri. “I understand, but truly any information you could offer would be invaluable.”

She sighs irritably, you can't imagine why. It seems an innocuous enough question. “Very well. My advice I will give, it is this. Stutter when it is upon sands that you walk. Avoid those lands which are warped and twisted by strange magics, beast within dwell. Ruins you ought not explore. Pestilence is held within. If a band of my people you come upon; water you refuse, a meal you should accept. Upon stone or within caves sleep, on sands or within ruins never linger. To disturb past artifacts is unwise. That is it, my advice to you.”
(1/2)
>>
You don't really know what she means by 'stutter' when you walk on sand, but the rest of it seems clear cut enough. You wonder what sort of pestilence might dwell within the old Hiacian ruins, and why you ought to refuse water. Among the tribes of bhataki and other nomadic groups the custom is to refuse wine and accept water. Food doesn't usually enter into the equation. You also weren't aware that there was stone in the Pa'vala. You'd thought it a vast expanse of sand, and indeed that is how it's always been described to you. A pit of sand so deep that there a sinkholes which lead to the center of the world.

Your thoughts are interrupted by Ismael. “You'll have to excuse us, we really should be getting back to the city. You're hosting a meal at Master Karim's home, yes? Perhaps we ought to attend, it would provide a good opportunity for us to catch up, and for you to tell me about your travels in more detail. I could even invite the rest of our old compatriots, make it a true reunion.”

>Sadly, you really won't be in town long. Perhaps next time.
>That sounds great, tell him to go ahead. You'll need to actually host a get together.
>Actually you were planning on having it in your new estate, once you've had it thoroughly cleaned. You'll host it in a few days time, so you can prepare.

So there are spirits or experiments ok.

Well then i know what we will be doing either when leaving or heading towards.
>If a band of my people you come upon; water you refuse, a meal you should accept.
So either the water isn't suited for non-desert dwellers.

So never sleep in the sand since there is shit there.

don't travel forward too much at once, or go below your walking pace, probably what above anon said regarding the worms
>Avoid those lands which are warped and twisted by strange magics, beast within dwell.
beasts stick around the magicially warped areas, so non magicially warped areas are safer and less beastly
>Ruins you ought not explore. Pestilence is held within.
could be corrupted vys, or just disease ridden creatures, or maybe even tomb molds or something more nefarious
> If a band of my people you come upon; water you refuse, a meal you should accept.
don't ask for water from people in the Pa'vala, accepting a meal is probably a cultural gratitude
>Upon stone or within caves sleep, on sands or within ruins never linger.
seems obvious, don't stay on sand or within ruins, ever.
>To disturb past artifacts is unwise.
another obvious one, one which we should be aware of at least until we find our true objective

Finally cought up with this quest again. I was here from thread 1 to around 40 or so until I simply had too much to do for university to keep up with it. My schedule has cleared somewhat and I caught up reading the past 60 threads in the last 2 days. Holy shit what is wrong with me?

There are only 2 things I want to mention (which are completely irrelevant and people have probably forgotten since they were months ago).
Spides don't have mandibles.
Sexing of juvenile reptiles is usually done by probing the cloaca Soma could of course just make up anything he likes regarding dragons.

Would have never come to that conclusion myself but now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense, if my scorpions (which also sense prey mainly by vibration) are any indication.
And if the worms work in a similar way then all it takes to completely confuse (or maybe enrage) them is any sort of random vibration all over the place (heavy rain, throwing rocks, etc.).

I recall a suggestion a long time ago that Chrys had about combining her new armor (the unknown one) with the elaudian death mask, which she stated has more capabilities than the one that comes with the armor.
I figure since we're in El-Amin we could suggest to her via brooch or something for Darzi to take her and go find a craftsman to do that, since she seem to have forgotten.

You're joking right?
"I LIVE HERE THIS IS MINE!"
What kind of retarded thinking is that?
So If I throw all my stuff in the white house, I can claim because I own some stuf in the house it's mine?
Anyway my point is, the place is not LEGALLY ours. we should pay for it, so we don't have any problems when we leave.
We leave, and some one buys the place and tears it down. Is possible, since it's run down.
If the spirit is freed from the house what incentive does he have to protect the home?

TLDR; Own the house legally takes care of any stupid problems we may run into later.
>>
>>37469615
So you want to summon Saurons eye?

Regarding sound magic though, have we ever figured out how we'd actually do it? Of course there are several ways, but the most badass (and showy) one I can think of would probably be electricity.

Didn't we recently see our old master summon lightning from his fingertips? We need to learn how to do that, and then we need to learn how to do this:

The bank will not deal with an Aghtaki, as we've already been informed, it's against the law to do any kind of business with an Aghtak.
While merchants don't give a care, banks and other property owners that must keep records tend to do. We'd attract more attention than we want.

Though honestly it's not worth arguing about, we'll just deal with it when we come to it.

With both we'd have the same problem. To produce a sound we'd need to turn them on and off at extremely rapid intervals (whatever the frequency of the sound we want to produce) unless we find a way to divide a single cast up into very tiny portions that would be extremely coslty.
Of those too lightning would probably be the better bang for the buck though, the first strike ionizes a trail in the air, making subesequent strikes easier.

Lads, we're never going to get anywhere quickly just talking about how we'd like to meditate on so-and-so while Soma writes. What we need to do is to come up with a plan and set schedule. I've got a tentative one that goes a bit like this: tomorrow we shall talk to the cartographer and try to get as much information on Pavala, and try to get tips on which effects to learn to be best prepared. We then spend the next two days meditating and teaching our dragon how to meditate.

I'm down for that.

Right now, I see it as;

>Get slaves, return to master for key, take companions and slave to new home
>question dat spirit about ownership
>talk to cartographer about Pa'vala and preparations
>go back to our new home and then fix our backlog meditations, then some experiments, inbetween our now apparently planned housewarming party, and some artifact meditations, some likely reading, etc,
>go off with Zahak to kill Chrys' husband
>something something four sidequests

I'm fairly optimistic we'll get at least the first one done tonight, barring all ten side-quests that happen between us traveling to our masters house and our own and so forth.

At the end of every thread, I'll tabulate which goals and assignments are immediately pressing, and create a schedule to get those things done. It'll be posted afterwards and everyone can give their input. At the beginning of every thread, someone or myself will post said schedule so we can keep focused the QM will know what the players want to do, and accommodate them accordingly, instead of meandering about with no particular destination.

This is true.
Darzi, is also teaching chys how to kill with out killing us.
So there is that.
I was also thinking once we study anatomy. We try healing chys's scars, with out cutting her. should be a small challenge, since we're reforming tissue already there to brand new.

>>

>>

>>

>Might as well offer since we might want company on the way.
I also recall Chrys asking that it'd be best if we did our nefarious task alone, which is also why some anon before suggested taking Zahak for a father-son trip as a sort of cover for it.

I think the language barrier is something we should work on with them ourselves. Or maybe ask Darzi to.

>>37470718
Chry's husband first. We agreed to that a while ago. Beyond the obvious that it's also a less taxing area to travel through and deal with of course.
>>
>>37470663
Sounds good, I agree with that plan.
When are we going to do those meditation sessions and putting those theories we just discussed regarding sound to work though? Just in the downtime we have while travelling?

>>37470692
I think she's completely comfortable with those scars, she sees them as a part of herself, don't think we could heal those away, at least completely. Also considering her culture those could very well be a symbol of status she wouldn't want to lose.

>>37470718
Pa'vala could take dozens of threads, that single assasination would be much, much faster, especially when traveling alone and I really kinda want to get it out of the way.

>>37470774
>>37470791
No need to argue, there will be a vote when it comes up.
>>
>>37470774
We pretty much reached a consensus about it a bunch of threads ago.
Also it makes the most sense.

>>37470795
>I also recall Chrys asking that it'd be best if we did our nefarious task alone
Which is why I was suggesting when we pass the mountains we split, and the rest of the party can head to Anthus.
>>
>>37470774
Oh yes we did young man.
Mik even told her we'd do it before the Pa'vala.
>>
Since we're speaking about scars, should we keep some scars? Or should we heal them all away?

Yes we did. We talk about it several times.
>>

>Which is why I was suggesting when we pass the mountains we split, and the rest of the party can head to Anthus.
I just don't see the point, really? They can sit pretty with their own projects in our home.

And also, I've grown really attached to anons father-son trip idea, perhaps unhealthily so. I will not budge on this subject.
>>
>>37470835
we never make scars, the only reason they were made in the first place is because our level in healing was too low.
>>
>>37470848
We'll still have the father-son bonding.
I refer you all to my shitty plan here to clarify: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/36330212/#p36336818

It probably needs some revising, but whatever.
>>
>>37470821
Wouldn't make much sense to even take the party to Anthus, we'd just load the off there and then pick them up again, totally unnecessary for them. We'd also travel faster alone.

Also in the downtime they could get more information regarding the Pa'vala.
>>
I can't wait for Chrys to be trap in hypocrisy.
>>
>>37470804
We could ask, if we say we want to advance our healing once we read up on anatomy. Would be a good way to heal her scars, if she doesn't have any problems with it.
>>37470848
it's best we get it out of the way asap.
she wants it done only the two of us.
Zahak, might be able to come if he can develop moving invisabily to such a level where it's not taxing on him at all. and Can maintain it easily. Or develop an illusion to appear as a child or something.
Chys should keep teaching him earth and more words

We'd ask them of course, I just can't imagine any of them agreeing, unless they really don't like the climate here or something, besides if we dress this up as the father-son trip anon came up with (I really like the idea) it wouldn't make much sense for them to come with us.

“Actually I'm planning on hosting it at my new estate, once I've had it thoroughly cleaned of course. Why don't you get everyone together and we'll all meet up at my old Master's home in three days time?” You don't actually know how to direct someone to your new place. You're not sure what the local landmarks are in that part of El-Amin. You suppose it's sort of near Pani's Temple, one of the largest temples in Pidjata that you're aware of, but it's not really all that close. Surely there's a landmark closer to your estate you could have people navigate from.

Ismael clasp your forearm and you return the gesture. “In three days then, my friend. I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors.”

You grin. “And the same to you, my friend. Do try to behave yourself as best you can in the interim.”

Ismael scoffs, releasing your arm. “You're telling me to behave? Please, Mikhael. I am the epitome of a proper noble.”

With that, the two of you part ways. He and Jayashri wandering off towards the gates. You wait until they're out of sight before approaching the slave market proper. Most of the slaves are kept in cages or at the very least chained together unless a prospective buyer ask to inspect them. Further in to the market you see yet more cages and yet more slaves, merchants speaking privately with clients rather than hawking them to a crowd.

As it stands, most of the slaves up for sale are elven, probably either refugees or captives. There are two Samjan women, who you assume have either sold themselves or been sold by their fathers into slavery to repay a debt. There was a man as well, but he's being led away by a woman in the robes of a vatis.

(1/2)
>>
There are also a dozen or so human men up for sale. You'd guess that they're bandits, pirates, or otherwise criminals that were captured and sold as punishment for their crimes. Humans tend to be stronger and sturdier than elves or Samjan, but they're not exactly the brightest and they're dreadfully short-lived as well.

It also occurs to you that you might want to see about hiring some sort of overseer. You suppose one of the slaves may be learned, in which case they can be appointed to be your steward. Normally the managing of slaves is one of the duties a man's wife takes up, but as you're unwed and a Vatis in addition you'll need to take care of it yourself.

As you pass between the various rows of chained together men and women and cages, a man with the look of a merchant approaches you wearing a congenial grin. He's perhaps three hundred, with a thick black beard yet to begin greying. He claps you companionably on the shoulder and begins to walk alongside you as you explore the slave market.

“Ah! I recognize a man of distinguished taste when I see one! Tell me, my friend. What are you looking for on this fine day? A beautiful Samjan woman to warm your bed? A human with the build of an ox to work your fields? Elven servants to take care of your abode? Ikram has all that you could ever ask for and more!”

>You're just looking for servants.
>Ask if he has any learned slaves to serve as your steward.
>You suppose you might be interested in a bed warmer. Why not?
>Actually, you were just planning to buy at auction. You've no need for his help.

I mean, you have a strong Samjan woman who is simply stunningly good looking, and a mutant with emotional problems who is going to die extremely young compared to us. Not to mention is a mutant. Seriously, why don't you just marry a goddamn Elf if you want to get re-banished so badly.

And she'll die young. Did everyone miss that part about her?

I don't think she's the type of girl who's into butt stuff. She was a little old for her bandit imprisonment and rape to turn her slutty, more likely to make her less adventurous in bed.

Unless her butt was left alone for some unknown reason, and it's the last "pure" thing she has to offer us.

I'm just trying to be logical about it here. FYI, if you're going to date a rape victim, the younger it happened to them the better at it they'll be. Like those kids who started learning to play guitar at like 7 or 8 compared to when they were teenagers. It's just all that practice when they're most open to learning.

Fun fact! Most of the time women use baby-talk in bed, it's because they were sexually abused at that age and associate it with sex. So it's a good general guide to what you're getting.

Man, it sounds kind of terrible when I type it out like that. 's true though.

ROAD TRIP

File: Educated Slave.jpg (279 KB, 900x1347)
279 KB
279 KB JPG
“I'm looking for a learned slave to manage household affairs and servants to take care of my estate while I'm away. I've only just purchased a home here in the city-” Well, you suppose purchased might be a bit of a strong word, you're in the process of negotiating with the spirit which dwells within it. “-and there is work to be done cleaning up and making a number of repairs. It's a fairly large building, more than ten rooms.”

The merchant's eyes seem to gleam in the dim light of the slave quarters, the silken awnings providing some relief Surya's wrath. “My my! You'll need quite the large staff to take care of such a large building! Might a suggest a team of human laborers as well to take care of repairs? Trust me, they may not prove clever but under the guidance of a Samjan master they can accomplish great things, truly.”

The man leads you through the market to a collection of chained together slaves guarded by a few burly looking men with the look of mercenaries about them, their armor polished to a resplendent shine. Most of the slaves are elves, as seems to be the norm. You wonder where they're all coming from, you must have seen more than a hundred up for sale just today alone.

The merchant moves through his stock, picking out elven men and women seemingly at random, as well as five large human men with the look of soldiers. They're not particularly tall, although each of them stands at an easy six feet or more, but they're far broader than any Samjan, and more muscular than most. You'd estimate them to be in their late teens or early twenties, you must admit you don't particularly know much about how humans age. They're all terribly pale, with generally lighter toned hair. They keep their eyes turned towards the ground, as is proper. They'll serve well enough as laborers.

The merchant barks out orders to the slaves in a language you don't recognize before vanishing into a tent he's set up at the edge of the market. It sounds like some sort of bastardized version of Rhynian. “Allons! Laissez le regard a la clientele de vous!” Regardless, the slaves are quick to obey. You hope they actually speak Rhynian, or if they don't that the slave he picks out to serve as your steward speaks their language.

You give the slaves a once over, inspecting them for injuries or anything of the sort. Of course, as a Water Vatis, you would have no reason to worry about their health. You could heal them in an instant. You do so regardless, if only because it seems to be what's expected of you.

After a fashion the Merchant returns with a Samjan woman in tow. She has the look of a noblewoman about her, and is dressed far nicer than any of the other slaves. Her white robes, the standard uniform of slaves almost universally, are made of silk and she's decorated herself with a number of gold bands and other such decorations. You'd guess she's from a noble house which lost its holdings, not an uncommon tale but quite shameful none the less.

The merchant stands before you proudly, the woman next to him. She bows low before speaking. “Master Ikram has already told me that you desire a slave to manage your household. My name is Prema Amjad. I was taught by my father to read, write, and perform arithmetic. I've limited talent with magic, primarily in regard to Water magic. I've an extensive knowledge of history, as well as business.” She states carefully. She's using terribly formal language, though you suppose it's appropriate given the circumstances. You've actually heard of the Amjads, although nothing particularly good. Your father called them a family of imbeciles and wastrels.

(2/3)
>>
>>37472608
No. Mostly because I fucking hate harems, especially in quests
>>
The merchant smiles broadly, or well, broader. You don't think you've seen this man do anything but smile since he saw you. He slaps Prema approvingly on the back before exclaiming. “Exactly what you'll need, my friend! A bright one, this.” Prema stalks off towards the rest of the slaves, while the merchant continues speaking. “I'm having her select twenty men and women to serve you at your home, she knows the stock better than I. I assure you, I trust her judgment completely. You will not be disappointed, my friend! Now, as for the matter of price... For you, I will offer a special discount. I can see you're a man if distinction! Only three thousand silver for the laborers, the servants, and Prema herself.”

You look at the merchant skeptically. Three thousand silver is an extortionist price. Twenty elves couldn't be worth more than five hundred, and the humans no more than a hundred. While it's true educated slaves fetch a premium, you couldn't imagine paying more than a thousand silver for the lot of them. Truthfully, eight hundred would seem a reasonable price.

“Gods above, man. Three thousand silver? What do I look like to you, a bleeding idiot? I doubt the lot of them are worth more than five hundred. I'm not looking for the most beautiful of women to screw or the most powerful of Vatis to serve me. I'm looking for servants, house keepers. Don't mistake me for the sort who doesn't know the value of their coin, you probably bought these poor sots in bulk from some slaver pulling into port. I doubt each of them individually cost you more than a few dozen silver.”

The merchant clutches his chest melodramatically. “Five hundred silver? You wound me! Why, Prema alone is worth that much! Truly, she's a gifted woman. I'm loathe to part with her! I couldn't except less than twenty-two hundred silver. You're practically stealing from me as is!”

You hold out your hands, begging him to pause. “No, my friend. That's not how this is going to work. The Amjads are a family of cheats, liars, wastrels, and idiots. I've heard them spoken of on a number of occasions and never have I heard anything good about a single one of them. You should consider yourself fortunate I'm interested in buying her at all. Five hundred, not a penny more.”

You can see the merchant starting to sweat. “My friend, surely you must understand that I've invested in these slaves! When I dragged them off the boat most of them were starving and diseased, half dead and eager to retake their freedom. I've spent months and hundreds of silver getting them into marketable shape!”

He's made a tragic misstep. “So you're asking me for thousands of silver just for the honor of purchasing the diseased scum you scraped off the bottom of a slave ship? No, I think I'd rather take my business elsewhere.”

You turn sharply on your heels and begin to march away, but he calls out to stop you. “Wait wait wait! Sir, surely we can come to some kind of agreement! I'll give them to you for a thousand silver!” You don't bother turning around, and a moment later he cries out again. “Six! Six hundred for the lot of them!”

You pause, considering his offer. After a time you turn around to face him once more. “Very well, I suppose I can afford to overpay slightly. I am, after all, a generous soul.” Really, six hundred is cheap. Slightly less than twenty five silver per slave.

You reach into your cloak, withdrawing a pouch of forty gold coins. You weight it briefly in your hands before tossing it to the merchant. He catches it eagerly and pulls it open, counting out its contents briefly. He sighs gratefully, tucking the pouch into his sleeve. “Wonderful, well then. What name shall I record this transaction under?”

Why would it be a problem if we choose our family name?
We swing by our fathers house. Let him know we made a purchase. And Our father handels that for us.
Eventually we need some one who will check up on our estate every now and then. And letting our father know would be best.
We could also talk to him about making the purchase for the house if the spirit doesn't have the deed. SO we might need to see him anyway.

“Just put it under the Abdul-Hakim name.” You remark casually, shrugging.

Recognition dawns on the merchant's face almost immediately. “Of course, right away sir! Give the Emir my regards.”

You raise an eyebrow curiously. “You know the man?”

He shakes his head quickly. “Not personally, no. We've had some business dealings in the past, but only through representatives.”

Huh, you suppose new slaves have to come from somewhere. Come to think of it, your father's staff did seem larger than you remember it being. His various business ventures must be going well if he's bought more slaves, despite recent disasters. “Well, I'll pass along your regards if I see him.”

Only moments later Prema returns leading a column of twenty slaves, a more or less even mix of elven men and women. She links the chain connecting the elves to the chain connecting the humans, then assumes her place at the head of the column. You tug on the rope linking the goats and begin the trip back to your Master's home across the city.

It occurs to you while you walk that you'll need to find a place to keep your new staff, you suppose you could take them to the mansion itself after you pick up the key from your Master. There's certainly enough room to keep them all. Then again, it's not exactly pleasant as of yet. There's a lot of work to be done.

>They can spend the night in your Master's sitting room and then get to work tomorrow morning.
>The day is yet young, it's barely noon! You'll stop by your Master's home and then escort them to your new estate to begin work.
>You'll find an inn or something to put them up for the night, you wouldn't want to impose on your master.

>You stare at him impassively. Eventually he relents and passes you a small slip of paper which he's prefolded along the top and bottom third of the page. You glance over it quickly. The gist is as he described; so long as you have not broken the laws of the realm you ought not be detained. However, there is a clause in the middle which states that, should you commit an offense worthy of banishment, you should be executed rather than detained and branded. Signed at the bottom is the Shah's name, Kadir El-Amin, in flowery script.

We will be fine as long as we don't break the law.

Yes, and he states that it doesn't restore any rights or privileges. Which is what anon was saying it did.

How does in not restore our right to do business in pidjata? If we cannot be arrested for doing no crime and doing business in not a crime then our right to do business in pidjata has been restored.

Doesn't that mean that the law about not doing business with Aghtaks still applies to us, since we're not yet unbanished and still an Aghtak?

>>37474876
I think what anon thinks is taking the above to the obvious extreme, IE, it can be ruled against us on a technicality. Since dealing with Aghtaks is against the law of the realm.

Basically, I think we should just avoid the garrisons, and breaking laws (like providing false names, as a clever anon stated before) and we'll be fine because nobody really has to know us.

Obviously we should avoid the garrison and breaking the law.

But providing a false name is not illegal. Not that I'm saying we shouldn't use our family name.

You'd have to ask the anon that originally suggested it. I assumed he knew more about Pidjatan culture than me since I don't read the ask.

As far as I know for the cultures most similar, false names only break the law for exchange of property or services when the name being presumed is somebody else's and being abused, like assuming the name of other nobility or falsifying state records.
I assumed based on my limited knowledge that it was similar here, if its not then that's okay too.

We have a lot of money... Where did we get it again?
>>
>>37475340
From the bandits who were paid off by Lord Spiros, the treasurer of Anthus.
>>
>>37475340
Selling loot, and looting loot.
>>
>>37475312
Unless you're impersonating someone else it's not illegal. I've seen nothing to indicate otherwise and i follow all of Somas shit.

It's just probably not polite.

>>37475340
Mainly the bandits at the top of the mine

wrong actually he never paid those bandits, we got it from following a quest hook, after saving the princess.

Any chances we can hit the town with Prof and SK later chill with them and get prof a good shield?
>>
>>37475352
>>37475361
That's what I thought. I guess I didn't realize at the time how much we had gotten from them.
>>
>>37475387
Well, it seemed to be hinted at. What with them having an unusual amount of equipment, wealth, and goods.
Given that we learned Spiros was planning to attack the town with paid off bandits to pressure the academy, it seems altogether logical that they gained a good amount of their wealth from that deal than just raiding caravans.
We pointed out the oddness IC too, if that helps.
>>
>>37475461
>>37475453
Should prolly read dat bandit journal.
>>
>>37475461
I'm pretty sure Soma confirmed that they had that much gold because of Spiros paying them.

That is like saying dwarves are just shorter humans.
>>
>>37475535
Shorter and angrier, too.
>>
>>37475461
that was before we found the mine.
It seems like their leader was pretty strong and rich so thats why they had some decent gear, plus that small amount of bandits would be nothing against a city, my guess is that they were sent by some one else to go after the princess.
>>37475500
I'll vote for it.
