You press your forehead to the window and stare at the little pieces of ocean you can see from the road. Your friends are all chatty and excited about camping, and rightfully so, but you need to keep your guard up. It’s been several days since your last kill and its starting to catch up to you.

It isn’t so bad, and certainly nothing you haven’t dealt with before. On the other hand, you have an hour long drive ahead of you, and you’re going to be packed into a metal box with giggly persons the whole time. You don’t want to snap and start being unruly, so you try to keep to yourself and keep your brain not thinking about anything that requires thinking about.

Baron and Vikrama direct a few comments at you, but you give only token answers. You’re vaguely aware of Rowan making up some excuse on your behalf, accrediting your weird mood to a migraine or whatever. It’s close enough to the truth, you suppose.

Anyway, you get through the rest of the trip without acting up, but it isn’t easy. (+4 Stress: 30/100)

A long time later Rowan pulls into an isolated camping spot. You recognize the place, in a literal and also metaphysical sense. Borislav’s cabin is only a half-mile to the north.

When everybody climbs out, you do the same. You feel the presence of the old trees as soon as your feet touch the ground. The earth here is alive – its not the same bustling energy as the city. It’s slower and deeper, less of a surface rush and more of a strong undercurrent. You get the impression that the forest is aware of your presence. Or maybe not aware, but at least reacting.
>>

A breeze threads through the treetops, rustling the branches overhead. It’s chilly out as usual, and you scrunch up into your impenetrable leather jacket in response. There’s still a few hours of sunlight left, but you can feel it dying away.

“Ground control to Sierra, the people want to know what their heroine is thinking,” Vikrama says.

You turn and notice that they’ve already got most of the minivan unpacked, and Baron’s already half-way done setting up his tent. You must’ve been standing in place for the last few minutes.

>Oh uh. Just zoned out, I guess.
>Soon, soon you will know everything, my apprentice.

That seems like a bad start, but bringing back a deer for dinner would probably be fine.

We can show off our immunity to normal fire by holding a haunch of meat in the fire.

The question takes you off guard. “Oh uh. I guess I kind of zoned out,” you say.

Vikrama taps her chin. “Do you expect me to go to the media with that?”

“I’m connecting with nature and stuff,” you say, a little offended. “It’s kind of deep and magical, you know, so you probably wouldn’t get it.”

“Ah. Is this what that Russian park ranger’s been teaching you in your work-study program of yours?” she asks.

“Soon, soon you will know all, my apprentice,” you say, mimicking Emperor Palpatine to the best of your ability. You start walking off without any more fuss. “I’ll be back in a sec. Got to go nature walk and forage for berries or whatever. Or maybe I’ll be back in an hour.” You pause and turn around to look at Vik. “Basically, I’ll be back sometime, so don’t look for me.”

“I’m intrigued,” Vikrama replies. “Have fun.”

You whistle, and Reeber comes running over to join you. You take your hound and distance yourself from the camp. You’re definitely ready to do stuff.

>Take off your coat. Don’t want to get blood on it.
>Shake out of all the dumb glamors and get comfy.
>Just kill a raccoon or something. Make it quick.

Reeber’s full of excitement, and dances around your feet, nipping and making dog noises.

You slip off your jacket and hang it on a particularly bushy fern. Why do redwood trees have to have such high branches? Whatever. You go further out from camp, and when you’re certain you’re far enough away from everybody, you kick off your shoes and place them neatly on the rock that Ranthix makes you do Keth’gi on.

It’s pretty chilly out, but you’ll warm up when you get running around. “C’mon Reebs,” you say, jerking your head and taking off into the forest. Reeber shoots ahead like a gunshot, and the two of you start scenting out stuff to hunt.

In due time the hunt is accomplished. It feels good just being yourself for a little while.

Bloodlust: Satiated
-25 Stress: 5/100

You wipe the blood off your mouth with the back of your hand. While deer taste pretty good, you’re pretty sure they also taste good cooked. Maybe you could be impressive and bring back a deer for everybody. You think you’ve seen Ranthix do it enough times to cut up some venison. But then you start thinking about how you’d transport it. It’d be pretty messy, and also you don’t think it’d be kind of a weird way to bring up being a demon.

Reeber doesn’t offer any opinion, and instead goes at it mauling the deer.

Well. You could blame him, maybe. Maybe. Hm. Nah. It’s a bad idea. You go to a nearby spring and wash yourself and Reeber up a little before heading back to camp.

You kind of regret not wearing your coat. You could always flame on, but you don’t want anybody to spot you throwing fire around prematurely. Ugh. After a while you get back to where you left your shoes, and recompose yourself to look all neat and cool or whatever. Then you go over and pick up your coat. Part of you hopes they didn’t set up a fire so you can do it, but the other part wants there to be a fire waiting for you.
>>
The fiery crackle from camp and the smell of wood smoke tells you your pyro skills will not be necessary. You heave an internal sigh and emerge from the dimming tree line into the camp circle. Everybody’s tent is up – even yours. People’ve been busy.

Vik and Ro are by the fire, chatting. Between you and them, Baron’s busy tying all kinds of ropes together between two adjacent trees. You have no idea what that’s all about. It takes him a second to notice your approach.

“How was the nature?” he asks, glancing up at you from his task.

“Fulfilling, but kind of cold,” you reply, walking forward. “I need fire.”

“Well we got fire to spare.”

Reeber prances past and starts bothering Baron. Except admittedly, you didn’t do a very good job washing the hellhound snout. He must’ve gotten back at the deer when you took your eyes off of him.

He shoves the hellhound back. “Gross. Did he catch up to a squirrel?”

>Something like that.
>Please. Reeber's got top tier taste.
>It's not gross. It's the mark of a hunter.

Our law-enforcing father figure knows we have an irresistable urge to kill but protects us from other enforcers. We, for our part, do not kill unless the target is harming innocent people allowing us to feel like we are good people despite our murderous nature.

Or a deer, because fuck deer.

“It’s not gross, it’s the mark of a hunter,” you reply.

“Okay great, but I don’t want the mark of the hunter on my jeans.” Baron once more fends off one of the hound’s friendly advances.

“Reebs, lay off,” you order. Reeber obediently backs away from Baron and rejoins you at your side. He definitely does have a little something right all over his nose. “I guess somebody should clean him off,” you observe, ambiguously avoiding the responsibility of doing it yourself. “But forget about him – what the heck are all the rope things?”

Baron throws his weight onto one of the many ropes. The knots securing it in place don’t budge an inch. “It’s a rope chair slash hammock,” he explains. “I always make one when I go camping. It is tradition.”

You are not impressed by the flimsy array of ropes. “Right.”

“It’s more comfortable than it looks,” Baron replies. “Try it out.”

You are still not convinced.

“Look,” he says, throwing himself into the chair. The ropes suddenly go from being a bunch of dangling things to a leisurely perch from which one might observe the camp. He stands back out of it, and the illusion disappears. “Have a seat.”

Somewhat more convinced, you come over. Still, you have trouble telling one rope from another. “Which one do you sit on?” you ask.

Baron holds up the seat of the thing, which you can now identify as a kind of cradle thing for holding somebody in place. “You put up your feet on this one, and these ones are the head rest.”

Now it makes sense. You think. You come over and ease yourself into the rope trap, and find yourself suspended on a bunch of ropes. It’s kind of weird, but kind of cool.

Baron reaches overhead and plays around with the tightness of a few of the lines. “Everything’s adjustable,” he boasts, gearing the rope chair thing for your height. “Just put your feet up on that and lean your head on these guys.”

You follow the instructions, and then find yourself quite securely nestled in ropes, hanging a couple feet above the forest floor. It’s way snug – you’d have to try pretty hard to fall out of it. You laugh to yourself as you fold your arms and kick back. It even swings a little bit.

“It’s all about the rope chair,” Baron informs you.

After a couple more seconds, you extract yourself from the contraption. “Okay, it’s not a dumb idea,” you say. “How do you know all the knots and stuff?”

Baron stretches out a piece of rope in front of him. “Boy Scouts,” he informs you.

You snort. “Well okay mister skills and tricks man,” you say. “I’m going to go eat marshmallows or something.”

He goes back to rope chairing it up and you go sit in a toasty camp chair by the fire, next to Rowan. “Hey Vikrama,” you say, “where’re the marshmallows?”

“One moment,” she says, popping up. She runs off, presumably to fetch the object of your desire.

Once she’s out of earshot, you turn to Ro. “So? What’s the plan?” you ask.

Ro holds her arms out to the fire. “Well,” she muses, “I was thinking that we would stay up really late, and then I’d go through everything about how I was always busy and how my family was weird. Then I’d tell them I was an angel and do some cheap trick, and once they were cool with that, break out the halo and wings.”

We should stand in the fire without getting burned. Or light ourself up. Or do shadow stuff. Shadow stuff is cool.

>It's entirely up to him.

“Okay, so we’ll do that, and then I’ll get Zelathis and we’ll shoot lightning at stuff,” you say.

Rowan frowns. “Why?”

“Because then they’ll get to like, I don’t know, you know, like. Like. It’s flipping lightning, all right? It’ll show them how cool we are and stuff.”

“We’ll see,” Rowan says.

You think though that she’s not totally on board with whipping out Zelathis and zapping the crap out of pinecones.

She looks more closely at you. “Um. You’ve got a little something right there.” She points to the corner of her mouth.

You try to lick it away. The vegan flavor of deer blood alights on your palate. Seems like you didn’t quite clean up everything. Whoops. You give your face a thorough rubdown and present it to Rowan. “Better?”

She nods. “Yep.”

Vikrama reappears with a big bag of marshmallows. “Here we go,” she says, settling down across from you and tearing it open.

Your can already taste eating marshmallows. “Yes. This is the life I choose,” you say.

Vik plucks a marshmallow out and makes a motion as if about to throw it at you.

With your ultra-reflexes, this is child’s play. You narrow your eyes at her challenge, and she tosses it up toward you. You move to intercept the mallow with your gaping maw. It bounces off your eye and lands in your lap, and you quickly gobble it up. “First time every time,” you boast.

Rowan rolls her eyes.

“Round two,” says Vik, readying a second marshmallow.

You lean over and snatch the bag from her too fast for her to stop you. “I’m the one who calls the shots here,” you say, flicking a marshmallow at Vikrama’s face. She swoops low and catches it.

You scoff. “Beginner’s luck.”

Marshmallows continues until Ro joins in. You’re about fed up when Baron joins the lot of you. He’s not much of a marshmallow catcher himself, sadly.
>>
Anyway, you and the guys talk nonsense and roast hotdogs and eat hotdogs. And then you roast those doughy little roll things, though they’re a lot harder to toast correctly than you thought. The first time you cook it up on the skewer, you burn it. The second time it’s still sick and doughy in the middle. The third time and every time after that, though, you have become the baker.

You’re pretty much done eating for logistical reasons, and the sun’s gone down long ago. Vikrama’s launched into an in-depth psychological analysis of Disney princesses, which provides some intriguing insights. It’s that time of night where things start to seem sillier than they really are.

You, Vik, Ro, and Baron all gather round the fire, which by now has died down low. The darkness presses in comfortingly about you.

“She deals with her fear of commitment through dangerous thrill-seeking and escapism,” Vikrama explains, becoming impassioned. "Think about it. She canoes down wild rapids with nobody knowing where she is, and her only meaningful relationships are with animals and a tree. The second she runs into John Smith, she latches onto him because she can’t understand anything he says – she controls the context of the relationship, because she can give him whatever personality she wants.”
>>
>>37453850
Is that true? Are we thoughts in her head she hears?

She should stop listening to the voices advice.
>>
“Yeah. And because John Smith looks pretty good in a breast plate,” you add.

“Plus he sings,” Rowan double adds.

You crunch up your brow in thought. “Does he sing in the movie?”

Rowan also squints. “Doesn’t he?”

“I’m pretty sure he does,” says Baron.

Vikrama provides a solution to the problem. “We’ll have to watch it.”

Ro folds her arms and leans on her knees toward the fire. “I haven’t seen that movie since… ten or eleven years ago?” She smiles softly, looking into the embers. “Wow. Time flies.”

“Just think about it. In just a little bit, we’ll be in college,” Baron says. “And then in just another little bit, we’ll be working jobs. And then we’ll be in our thirties, and then we’ll be retiring, and then we’ll be dead.”

“Pfft. Speak for yourself,” you say. “I plan to live forever. And so far, so good.”

“It’s a solid plan,” Vikrama says, nodding. She tries to stifle a yawn and fails. A feeling of fatigue starts to seep in through everyone’s guard.

There’s a lull in the conversation, and everyone just sits around the fire for a little bit.

Eventually, Baron pipes up. “Anybody know what time it is?” he asks, looking up at the starry night sky.

“Late,” you say, glancing over at Rowan. You can feel the conflict in her, excitement and fear and doubt all mixed together. If there was ever a perfect moment for doing the plan, it’s now before people start going to bed.

>Wow. I guess if nobody has anything really important to say, we should all just go to bed.

Geeze man, I'm pretty sure Sierra's not bleached. Also I'm not sure if her dark veins are all over her body. Are they? Don't think it has been mentioned?

>>37455214
>Corrupted Countenance: Black, jagged cracks form along the lines of Sierra's veins. Her eyes darken and her features become more gaunt, and her skin takes on a deathly pallor. She can hide or exhibit these traits at will, which features are generally frightening or disturbing to regular people. Cost: 0 PP (Take one turn to assume transformation) Stress Sensitive. [Mix]

She's corpse-pale. All her veins are black and it shows easily through the skin and some of the places on her skin have black crags running through the skin above the veins.

She looks fucking freaky.

>>37455250
Eeesh, guess I can't read! T-to my defence, humans don't have many visible surface veins on their backs! Normally... - oh wait!

Corpse pale would give her skin a tint of grey then. Veins are... easyish enough but I'm still trying to wrap my head around how to do those crags. A bit worried it might get too chaotic.

Maybe I'll discuss it with THAT OTHER ART GUY WHO'S A TOTAL PUSSY WHEN IT COMES TO POSTING ART! HINT HINT!

>>37455335
I'd look up one of those sciency models of people that just shows the circulatory system in human shape and put the crags in locations where it can act as some kind of highlight or if I'm lazy just find the spots that have the biggest veins and put a crag there.
But I'm not an art person.

You clear your throat to get everybody’s attention, and give Rowan a long, significant look.

“Okay, I know,” she says, gathering her hair and putting it over her shoulder. She still seems nervous, though.

“What is it?” Vikrama asks, looking between you and her.

“It’s that you’ve fallen for the ruse,” you tell Baron and Vik, a note of accusation in your voice. “This whole trip was actually just a plot so Ro could tell you her big, super deadly earth shattering secret already.”

Baron laughs. “What?”

Ro scoffs. “Why’d you – I was going to do it,” she says, glaring at you.

“Oh my god,” says Vikrama. “Are you pregnant?”

You burst into laughter.

Rowan turns bright red. “No!”

Vik smiles coyly. “Just checking.”

Baron points toward his tent. “Is this a girl thing? Because me and Reeber can head to bed a little early to give you room for womanly talk.”

“Nah,” you say. “This is for your benefit too.”

“Okay, a few questions first,” says Baron. “Is this a good secret or a bad secret?”

Rowan shrugs. “It’s not good or bad. It’s just… something surprising. Something strange.”

Baron catches on. “I know what this is. You’re finally letting us in on the Hallow conspiracy,” he says.

“Conspiracy?” Ro asks, not knowing whether she should laugh or take offence.

Vikrama perks up, all signs of fatigue vanished. “He means the great mystery of what our darling Rowan does with her free time,” she says.
>>
“It’s not a conspiracy,” replies Rowan, bristling.

“I don’t know,” you say. “It kind of is kind of like a conspiracy. But whatever - stick to the plan, Ro. The plan!”

“So I take it Sierra already knows everything,” Baron says, looking suspiciously at you.

“I kind of live with the Hallows all the time,” you say. “You find things out.”

“No offense to Sierra, but if you’re going to tell her, you can tell us,” says Baron. “I mean, you’ve known me since Freshman year. Sierra just moved here a few months ago.”

“It’s really complicated,” Rowan says, wringing her hands.

“Yeah. That’s why we came up with this sweet plan,” you say. “We got you all on your own and all comfortable and stuff so it’d go down all clever and junk.”

Vikrama gives both of you a bemused look. “You two put a lot of thought into this, haven’t you,” she says.

You stay focused on Rowan. “The plan!” you remind her.

“Stop pestering me! I’m doing it!” she says. She pauses to collect herself, and takes a deep breath, then looks seriously at Baron and Vikrama. “So, okay. You know how I’m busy all the time, right? And how sometimes I have weird surprise trips and things like that?”

“Yeah,” Baron says, not knowing whether he should be worried or excited.

“Well this is about that. And why I’m always getting weird injuries,” she continues. “And why I do fencing and why my family is crazy about guns.”

“Because you’re a Republican. Oh darling, we knew all along!” says Vikrama, smiling mischievously.

You shush her.

“Sorry. Please continue,” she says.

“This isn’t easy, okay? Be more serious,” Rowan says. “Anyway. The thing’s the reason I quit the soccer team, and why I’m who I am.”

“It’s also why her hair’s silver,” you chip in.

Vikrama listens intently.
>>
Baron makes an impatient gesture. “Stop building it up and just tell us,” he demands. “We get it. You’re serious, it’s important. And I kind of already figured it out, anyway. Your dad’s a vigilante, right?”

You are impressed. Baron put two and two together to get three. But honestly, he didn’t know four existed, so it’s a good faith effort.

Rowan winces. “Well, I guess that’s what it would look like,” she says. “But we’re not doing anything illegal. We actually work for the government.”

“Hold that thought for a second,” says Vikrama, starting to be a little intimidated by the turn in conversation. “This is getting into real conspiracy levels of conspiracy.”

“It’s not that crazy,” Rowan says, her tone defensive. “Okay. Look. That’s not what I wanted to talk about. The main thing I want you guys to know is that I’m not… totally normal, exactly.”
>>
“Give us a little more to go on than that,” Baron says, his expression serious. “What do you mean by not normal? Because you’re already a very atypical person.”

“I mean that… I mean that my mom’s a totally regular person, but… I’m a little bit part angel on my dad’s side,” Rowan says in a quiet voice.

Serious doubt mingled with a few threads of curiosity waft from Vikrama. “Now when you say angel….”

“I mean that I can do stuff like this,” says Ro, sitting up and raising her hand into the air. With a finger, she makes a graceful motion and inscribes a shimmering gold circle into the air before her. She draws a stylish glyph within the circle, and the whole design shines up with a fluttering light before fading into nothingness.

Vikrama is paralyzed with shock, while Baron leaps to his feet.

“What the hell was that?” he asks, taking a step back.

That reminds me of how the gangbangers who saw her bloodrage reacted better than this. Even the ones that reacted negatively were less freaked about Sierra killing people with her bare hands than Vik and Baron are about Ro making some glittery gold letters.

Really though guys, we should forget about the city life. Eventually we are going to get caught up in some mess bigger then the one we're in. An overwhelming sense of spicy surprise and shock radiates over you. You snort at their crazy reactions. “It’s myaaagic,” you say, waving your hands mystically. “C’mon. You’ve all ready Harry Potter, this is exactly like that. Don’t be a muggle.”

“You can do magic?” Vikrama asks, slowly coming to her senses.

Rowan nods.

Baron’s still standing up, so you bounce a couple marshmallows off his head. “Quit that!” He snaps.

“See Baron, this is why we had to do the whole plan,” you say. “Because you’re being that guy in the movie that freaks out about stuff that’s actually pretty fucking awesome.”

“I’m not freaking out,” Baron says, suddenly self-conscious. “I’m just… this is not what I thought I’d be seeing today.”

“Yeah well, out of all the people that got this stuff shoved in their face, you’re freaking out the most of anybody I’ve seen,” you say.

“I’m not freaking out!” he reaffirms.

“What, you think magic’s not awesome? Because you’re wrong,” you say.

He puts his hands on his hips, looking between you and Rowan. “Stop putting words in my mouth,” he says.

“It’s just how you’re taking it,” you say. “You’re all panicking and stuff. Well, here we are putting it all on the line, and if you’re really Ro’s friend, then you’ll freaking chill out, right now.” You glare at him. “This is harder for us than you, you know.” You pause, reconsidering. “I mean, I think.”

Baron rubs his eyes, and sits back down. “Sorry. I’m overreacting. Just… it’s a really big surprise. I’m surprised. It’s cool, really,” he says, starting to laugh to himself.

Vikrama seems mostly recovered. She smiles and takes Rowan’s hands. “I know I don’t understand, but I think I get it,” she says. “Thank you for trusting us.”
>>
Rowan smiles, starting to tear up. “I’ve always been me. You know that, right?”

Vik nods, still beaming. She releases Rowan and settles into her chair, leaning forward intently. “What else did you want to say?”

“I wanted to show you guys what I really look like,” says Rowan, standing up.

Everybody else stands up too, as if by unspoken agreement.

“No more freaking out,” you tell them.

“I’m good,” says Baron, in a fairly controlled tone of voice. “I’m in surprise mode. Surprise me. I’m all about magical surprises.”

Vikrama looks on, almost aglow with wonder.

First, Ro lets the glamor on her halo disappear. The gold ring flickers into existence affixed solidly above her head. Then she takes off her jacket and stretches out her wings, her tank-top providing the shoulder-space necessary. Her broad, silvery feathers glimmer in the fire light. She stretches them out to their full span, and waves them once, sending a gentle gust in your direction.

Baron snaps his fingers and wags a finger at her. “Angel. Right. Got it.”

The sight impresses Vikrama. “Why would anyone keep this a secret?” she asks, taken with the luminescent softness of Ro’s wings.
>>
>>37457128
Rabbit hole...
>>
“I kind of want a regular life,” says Rowan, folding her wings in behind her and tucking her hands between her arms to hide from the cold. “I mean. Not totally normal, but normal-ish. I want to live here and have friends and go to school and stuff.”

You’re pretty content with how Ro’s handling herself, so you let her do her thing.

“So, does this mean you’re really like a thousand years old?” Baron asks, trying to wise up to what’s going on.

“I’m not really a thousand years old,” Ro replies. “And I don’t have anything to do with the afterlife or God either, so you get to keep all your existential questions.”

Vikrama steps toward her. “Can I?” she asks, raising her hands.

She offers her a wing, and Vik runs her hands over the feathers. “They’re so soft.”

Rowan twitches her wing away from Vikrama’s fingertips, causing her to jump. “Sorry,” she says hastily. “My wings are a little ticklish.”

You memorize that fact and put it in your file of things to use against Rowan later.

Baron seems at a loss for words, while Vikrama’s too charmed to say much of anything.

Also, I'm 99% sure you're the self-professed bitterfag who never wanted to tell them in the first place. They're going to find out, it's already locked in. You're just being silly thinking that you can undo that.

What? Seems more like she's "proceed as planned"-y right now since she never said she was going to drop the glamours right after Ro did. The idea was to bust out Zelathis and show some cool stuff and THEN see about dropping the glamours.
>>
>>37458352
Ha well, maybe.

Or probably me projecting on Sierra the anxiety I'd feel in her place. Being a bloodthirsty demon who never freaks out and mauls, maims and kills people is a different thing than saying you're a prancing angel.
>>
>>37458429
Hey.

Sierra has been putting substantial efforts towards reducing the number of incidents involving mauling, maiming, and/or murder. We at Sierra Inc. care about those less fortunate than us.
