You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You trudge through the last vestiges of the snow with your girlfriend. Or possibly your girlfriend. Your something, at least.

The cold brings the blood to your cheeks, your breath rising through the dark in long, bright streamers of escaping warmth. Against the jagged night of the Scar, it looks like the old, faded ghost of a fire – the fire that tore this place down, maybe, or the fire that’s taken up residence since. You watch it slowly thin away into nothing, discorporating in incredible, silent spirals, spreading out toward the sky and becoming part of it. You understand each shimmer so well now; everything is so sharp and clear, as though the world is new. You decipher fleeting, shadowy forms in the unwinding tangle of the steam, and for a moment you imagine to yourself that you’re seeing the future, or the past, or pictures from somewhere far away.

That would be a cool power.

“What are you doing?” Laura’s voice snaps you out of your reverie, and you blush slightly, just now noticing that she’s been watching you.

“Ah, well… nothing, really.” You grin weakly. “Just watching our breath disappear, I guess.”

“I see.” She says.

She’s silent after that, but you think you catch her eyes following the thin trail of her breath, as if trying to understand what you’re doing, or why. You yourself can’t help but wonder, as you pick your way through the debris, why she picked that moment to kiss you earlier.

You’re not sure you want to know the reason, though.
>>
>(2/2)

As you approach the school, you notice a pale blue light emanating from one of the burnt-out classrooms on the east side. The two of you pick your way toward it, entering from the wholly demolished side, where the wall is just a smear of powdered plaster.

As you trudge your way in, you see Hisako standing on one end of the classroom, near the remains of the teacher’s desk, accompanied by a girl in one of those big Muslim cover-everythings and that blonde guy from before, Doug or whatever. The light appears to be radiating off her in waves, some kind of thin, barely-cognizant shape forming and unforming around her, shedding parts of itself through the air. She nods grimly as you approach. You nod back – you’re not sure what else to do really.

On the other side of the room, near the door, are two familiar(ish) faces. You already know the ridiculously pink pixie-looking one (she waves enthusiastically when she sees the two of you. Cute), and the shock-blonde teen dressed for a rave was briefly introduced to you as Kiden… so the guy with them must be Jono.

He’s a skinny, warmly-dressed teen, probably your age or a little older, with severe features and a mop of disheveled, dark brown hair. He’s also wearing what looks like five or six scarves, obscuring the lower half of his face.

“Alright, mate.”

His voice seems to come from everywhere. You feel Laura squeeze your hand tighter for a moment, the sound seeming less like the click and patter of tongue against tooth than a set of extremely rapid, extremely organized detonations.

“We’re still waiting on the Hellions.” Says Hisako, cutting in.

Maybe that's one of the Tier 3 powers: JJ's super senses are so good he can tell what has happened in an area's past.

The exclusion zone is in Queens. The shittier bit of Queens at that. The land isn't worth the expense of evicting a huge number of mutants from it, not unless we start being an active threat to the valuable parts of the city.

The Scar isn't going to be cleared in the near future, and the more we dig in the less likely it becomes.

Dammit JJ cloak.
>>
Slipping off your shades (your senses are so good now, you can almost forget you’re wearing them), you tug your hood back and let yourself be at ease. None of these guys are hiding, so you see no reason to. It’s night, in the middle of the deadlands, with nothing but mutants and possibly the occasional hobo in sight. Nobody’s calling the MCA on you.

“Hey.” You nod to Jono and the chick in the big black cover-y outfit. “I’m JJ.”

“Guessed as much.” Answers Jono, those scarves around his face not moving even slightly. Is he a telepath or something?

“Oh, right.” Says Hisako, as if she’s just now remembering basic manners. She glances over ay her the Muslim girl. “This is Sooraya.”

The girl turns to you and seems to almost bow slightly.

“I am pleased to meet you.” She says, her tone extremely formal, as though working around a second language.

A whole bunch of expectant eyes turn towards Laura, who meets them in silence for a moment before finally speaking up:

“Laura.” Short, to the point (just like her, heh).

You don’t wait long before you begin to hear hints of rumbling, silicon laughter approaching, and Julian materializes out of the gloom of the Scar, followed soon after by Santo’s hulking frame. Brian trails a little behind, his eyes darting to and fro, as if trying to take in as much as possible.

“Julian.” Says Hisako, coldly.

“Hisako.” Is his response. He regards you and Jono in silence, before sighing exaggeratedly. “Alright, you’ve got me here. I assume we can begin now.”

“Alright then…” Are you glaring at Julian? You think you’re glaring at Julian. You should probably stop that. “…First things first, I guess. We’ve got a gang war kicking off and it’s going to get extremely ugly for us.”

Jono nods.

“Yeah, alright, that seems important. Still…” He glances over at Hisako. “Not sure all that stuff you told your friend is stuff I’m believing, just yet. Jack being made of us an’ all.”

“I believe him.” Says Julian, his voice carrying an imperious tone, as though he just knows it’s worth at least 2.5 normal person opinions. “He may not be much to look at, but he’s solid enough.”

Huh. You think Julian just… vouched for you, or something.

Huh.
>>
>(2/2)

You clear your throat and dive in.

“Look, either way, all these guys are looking to get in on the Jack game. Until now, the recipe’s been pretty exclusive. What d’you think will happen when it gets out? When every crook in NY figures out how to cook it up?” You don’t take your eyes off Jono’s for a second. “We’ll be flooded in the crap. We’ve already got someone peddling it here, and that’s bad enough. Do we want the Maggia pushing it? Do we want the goddamn Owl sending his thugs down here?”

The others are quiet for a moment. Hisako is the first to break the silence.

“Point.” She says, as if awarding you a scoring hit in some kind of game. “In that case, what do we do?”

Julian grins broadly.

“Well, for starters, how about we haul Silvermane out into the street and blow his wrinkly-ass head off?” Everyone stares. He just shrugs. “Seriously, why not? No joke, one of my gals could probably level the Chrysler Building if she tried. Why not just rip these fuckheads apart?”

“They’re organized, Julian.” Jono’s voice bubbles up from under his mess of scarves.

“And it’s not right.” Says Hisako. “Innocent people could get hurt.”

Julian’s reply is immediate – you’d almost imagine he practiced it.

“We’re innocent people. We’re the ones on the raggedy edge. They’re the ones who pushed us out here.”

>[X] Maybe the first thing you should be doing is finding out who actually has the Jack recipe.

That’s pretty true. You can’t deny that. A small, shameful part of you doesn’t care how many flatscans you put in the firing line. They put you here. They put you in the shit with their ignorance and their hate and their fucking flamethrowers. They don’t deserve your consideration, and, sometimes, you think they never will – that this will go on forever, and they’ll never learn. They’ll just keep piling you into camps and driving out of civilization until either there’s no trace of the X-gene anywhere on one really mad, really bad mutant just turns everything to ash.

On the other hand, though, they’re still people. And while they don’t deserve much, they don’t deserve to die either. Not all of them.

“Okay, well… firstly, how about we figure out who we should be after?” Yeah, it’s a novel concept, but you think this whole ‘aiming before you shoot thing’ could catch on. “We don’t know who actually has the recipe. We should figure it out.”

“Point.” There it is again. Does Hisako think this is a tennis match? Is she keeping score somewhere?

“Alright, okay.” Julian nods slowly, seeming to turn the idea over in his head. He doesn’t look immensely pleased with the idea of not blowing up everything plus the moon, but he seems to see reason. “Waste not, I guess.”

You glance over at Jono, who has withheld his opinion so far. Eventually he just nods, apparently seeing little point in adding anything more.

“We have an initial agenda, then.” States Hisako, leaning heavily upon the teacher’s desk with both arms. You think you know why she chose to stand there. “How do we want to go about this?”

Jono speaks up.

“Stands to reason that we each get started on one or two of the gangs.” He pauses abruptly, as if to take a long, deep breath, and something under his scarf-formation glows the colour of fresh fire. The quick glances from his companions give you the impression that, whatever that was, that wasn’t intentional. “Fer instance, I can look into the Italians.”

“If it’s all the same to you, I’ll look into Silvermane’s boys.” The play of your fingers across that grand old piano returns to you. You think about the way the old man regarded you from his seat, and you think about Ms. Hardy, and you think about Silvermane's niece, trussed up somewhere as leverage. You can use all of that. “I think I might have an in there.”

Hisako affords you an odd stare in response to that, but it doesn’t last. Her face shifts back toward stoic neutrality soon enough.

“Fine enough.” Mutters Jono, his weird, incendiary voice strobing up and down through wildly disparate pitches. “The Russians, then. Hisako?”

“I can investigate the”–

“Triads for us.” Says Julian, cutting in with the general demeanor of someone calling dibs. He grins broadly. “Mr. Negative tussles with Spider-Man, right? No offense, but I doubt any of you guys could put a dent in that, if it came down to it.”

Goddamn, that sheer bloody-minded confidence. To his side, Santo rumbles his agreement, holding up one huge, granite hand for a high-five, which Julian promptly provides.

“Alright.” Says Hisako, syllables hissing between clenched teeth. If stares could kill, you’d be burying Julian yesterday. “The Young X-Men will look into the Owl’s and his gang.”

And why did they try to inject a mutant with some sort of drug? You could just abduct anyone off the streets and monitor his progress within a controlled area.

>[X] Jack within the Scar.

“Next up, then…” Pausing, Hisako clears her throat, and for a moment you get the impression that she’s waiting for someone to cut in. You almost do so, but you just about miss your opportunity, and shut your mouth, slinking back a bit. You hope nobody noticed that. “…Jack in the Exclusion Zone. Whoever’s actually running the supply aside, we already have a problem here. We’ve been trying to catch dealers in the act, and we’re doing our best to convince people not to be fooled, but…”

She sighs heavily, her shoulders drooping somewhat in a rare show of weakness.

“…There’s only seven of us, and there’s a lot of mutants out there now. We can’t watch everyone all the time.”

Thank god for that. You don’t want some kind of nightmare Hisakopticon situation up in here, or up anywhere. She seems nice but you have… issues… with being particularly visible.

“I see where you’re going with this.” Jono’s voice crackles and pops, sputters of bright, frayed red playing along his scarves. “My people are busy. We don’t have time to play cops an’ robbers, love.”

“Busy with stealing.” She answers, her tone angled like a spear meant for his gut.

“Busy with surviving.” He counters. “Busy with keeping other people afloat, too.”

Chortling under his breath, Julian steps back a little, raising his hands.

“Well, I’m not really a resident, so feel free to sort this out without me…”

A line in case people look at us weird.

Just stare at the ground for a few moments, hollow look in the eyes, looking at the earth but not seeing it, instead seeing that...thing from the orphanage. And then, the cabin, the pulse. The creature speaking in scientific terms, the machines full of jack, that Technopath texting you from his deathbed as his body was turned to Jack. Then looking back up to the group. "I've seen things that make me pray to a God I don't truly believe in, and done things I would have never thought even possible as a child. If someone tells me some invisible demon is stalking around, hunting us, I'm not going to write it off as a ghost story. I've been in too many for that."

>no bueno

Well, you guess you better step in or something.

“You sure about that, Julian?” He raises a solitary eyebrow in your direction. “You seemed pretty eager to bust lips a second ago. We could really use your help with that.”

‘Your’ help. Not ‘some’ help, or ‘a bit of’ help, or ‘help’ in general. You need this guy, Julian’s, help. Way you see it, you have two things to appeal to here – you must appeal to ego (check), and you must appeal to the desire to punch everything a million times in the face (also check). It’s disappointing, then, and a little confusing, when the response you get is so middling.

“Eh…” Julian shrugs, generally just looking tired of the idea. You caught a little spark of interest when you mention roughing dudes up, but… maybe he’s actually put two and two together and come up with ‘this silly lizard thinks he can manipulate me’. “…Maybe. When we’re free, one or two of us could do something.”

Guh. You don’t expect that to come to much. Maybe one of the actually nice ones will volunteer, but that’s about as much as you’re seeing from Julian’s side of the court.

“Okay then, how about I ask some of my friends?” It dawns on you here that you’re the only one referring to your companions as ‘friends’. Everyone else is talking about their ‘people’ or their ‘Hellions’ or even their ‘Young X-Men’. That’s kind of weird. “I’m pretty sure one of two of ‘em would be happy to help.”

You thoughts turn to Noriko and Lucas. Yeap.

Maybe you could ask some of the other guys, too, like Sam and that lot. They seem okay.

“That would a lot of help.” Says Hisako, smiling appreciatively.

How many fucking times do I have to say this?

The bit of New York we're in is crappy even in the real world, and separated from important parts (Manhattan and Brooklyn) by several miles of blue-collar city. As long as we aren’t fucking up the rest of the city, it will literally be more expensive to remove us than the land is worth, especially since it's all but guaranteed that they wouldn't get a clean sweep and thus would have pissed-off mutants with nothing to lose randomly scattered into the rest of the city.

I mean yeah, contingency plans are always a good idea, but this isn’t something we have to worry about unless we try to make the eviction happen.
>>

>[X] Possible exodus.

“Right then…” She begins, picking herself up somewhat. “What else do we have?”

You can’t help but raise your hand as you open your mouth to speak. You’re in a classroom, dammit, it’s how this place works.

“What about getting the hell out of here at some point?” You feel Jono’s eyes boring into you before you look up to see them. Laura’s, too. Suddenly you feel like you’ve said something wrong, or stepped in something unsavory, and you can’t stop yourself from shrinking inward just a little. You clear your throat nervously. “I mean… people are want to move back in here eventually. Summer time means construction time. It might not start immediately, but it’s gonna be hell when it does.”

“Point.” Argh Hisako stop that’s really weird. She straightens up somewhat, as if stepping back for a broader look at things, before flattening her palms against the desk once more, her eyes rooting you to the spot. “What would you suggest, exactly? If you hadn’t noticed, the rent in New York is too damn high.”

That elicits a small chuckle from Julian. You get it, but you’re a little too nervous to laugh.

Depending on how events play out, they could end up evacuating part of the city and just bulldozing people out. This is a country that puts mutants in camps and restricts boarder movement. So what if it turns into a war zone? Just means they were right all along! damn muties. etc.
>>
What about that little dimensional hole in that orphanage? You reckon we could nab whatever is causing that, kick out the demons and stick muties in?

“I dunno…” You were kinda hoping someone else would have a few ideas. “Short term? There are a few mostly dead warehouse districts on the riverside. Long term…”

You think. You think about where you’d want to be. About what you want to be. You want to be safe, and snug, and very far away from anyone that wants to shove you into a labour camp. You think about the snow falling like halo around Laura’s head, making the whole world glow.

“…Somewhere far away from anywhere?” You say, and add, a little weakly, “Somewhere in Canada, maybe?”

“We’re a long way from Canada.” Spits Jono, his voice crackling with unseen energies. “How do we get to ‘somewhere far away from anywhere’?”

You shrug.

“Boat? Scrounge enough money up and you can buy your way out of the city.” Or, hell, maybe if you have some really tough telepaths around, you could get a cruise liner to ferry you off course somewhere.

Risky, but damn tempting.

“Already thought about it.” Says Jono, a hint of bitterness evident in his tone. “Passage for mutants is seriously expensive, mate.”

“Well…” Hisako steps in, smiling tenuously. You think she can sense something you can’t, which is a first. “…We’ll just keep it in mind, shall we?”

“Fine.” Grunts Jono.

“Sure, yeah, whatever.” Is Julian’s response. You get the impression that that actually means “I ain’t running from some dumb flatscans”, though.

“Anything else?”

Hold on, the Hammerheads run construction, right? We need them on our side and then nobody will build anything in here.
>>
>>37450583
Except that worked in the past because it was small numbers of people at a time and kept out of sight from most people.

This would be a huge military operation in the biggest city in the country.

Nobody's ready to take that step.

No. Nothing to do with Photosynthesis. He said that once we unlock tier 3 powers leveled up to 5 would be able to do damage to Thor. (Comicbook Thor not movie Thor. We're talking superman level durability)

So many powers, so few X-points. Thinking Enhanced Kinesics has to be next, though. Then Electrostatic Touch 2 for the stuff it opens, particularly the Electrovision and Neuroelectrovision.

Also we should go for Null Shadow, which is pretty good and cheap to get.

>[X] ‘Oni’.
>[X] Yo guys I found some real weird earlier shit today…

“Yeah…” Man, you feel kinda silly, bringing this up.

Especially seeing as the last topic you raised for consideration was basically one big kaput.

“Have any of you guys heard of something called ‘oni’?”

Jono makes a weird, muffled sound – you think it’s a snort – that pretty much tells you what thinks of that.

“Ooni?” Julian raises an eyebrow. “What?”

Right. He doesn’t live here.

“It’s a myth.” States Jono, before you get the chance to explain. “Bedtime story type shit. Kids tell it to scare each other bonkers. It’s nothing.”

Hisako just fixes you with a long, meticulous stare.

“Do you have any reason to believe it’s not ‘nothing’, JJ?” She says, eventually.

You sigh. No, not really, you don’t. You just believe in being careful.

“Just putting it out there, alright. No smoke without fire.” You shoot Jono a pointed look. “I seem to recall a whole bunch of guys getting a lynch mob together back when there was talk of a vampire spreading around.”

He rolls his eyes. “Yeah, yeah… I don’t keep my people on a leash, you know?”

Maybe you should, you prick. The thought rises up like a fire inside of you, almost becoming real. You stop yourself just in time, but… it’s close.

>(2/2)

“One last thing…” You begin, your thoughts turning back to the events of that morning. “A short while ago, I found something out near the edge of the Zone, maybe the remains of a Jack overdose, maybe not. I’m bringing in a… friend… from the outside to take a look.”

“Mutant?” Interrupts Julian.

“…What?”

“Is your friend a mutant?”

“Oh…” You shift a little uncomfortably. You don’t really want to out Peter, but you don’t to argue here, either. And you feel like this could turn into an argument. “Yeah, he’s a mutant. Anyway, I’ll get back to you guys on it, cool?”

Hisako shares a brief glance with Jono, who nods.

“Sure. And, with that…” She pulls her hands off the desk, clamping them down on her hips and breathing out a long, heavy sigh of relief. “We’re adjourned, I guess. Feels weird, saying that.”

Yeah, it should. You’re in a burnt-out classroom in the middle of a torn up dumping ground. You’re all homeless untouchables. It should feel very weird.

Saying your goodbyes, you go your separate ways.

On your way back to the station, Laura stops in her tracks, the night seeming to grind to a halt around her. You amble to a stop, turning back to watch her, a little worried. Did she smell something? You sniff at the breeze, scraping at it for signs of life, or heat, or motion. Nothing – nothing but the general background mucus of the Scar, all the old vapours and slowly climbing ashes and faint, wispy remnants of life.

She breathes out a long, thin banner of gently-drifting steam, watching it curl upward into the black.

“I understand now.” She says, her eyes gleaming in the half-light. “It’s beautiful.”

I just figured out how to kill Kimura.

We get Animal Affinity, then take the Skitter approach to dealing with invulnerable foes who still need to breath: pack her respiratory system full of insects and watch her suffocate.

Seriously, we just told everyone to investigate crime bosses. But, didn't tell them that there might be a third party. Don't you think that's relevant information?
