Yesterday was a busy day full of responsibility.
Except for the barfight, that was a lot of fun.

Before your group parted for the night, you found out that the young hero who had been terrorizing the countryside was staying at a nearby camp. You arranged for a search party to meet at the castle in the morning to investigate. You figured it was probably a terrible idea to go to a place you're unfamiliar with during the dark hours.

Sometimes it feels like you're more of a General than a Captain. Not that you're complaining, because at least people are starting to listen to your words now.

You are Jack Albator, and that was the last thing you remember yesterday. Now all you feel are the grips of the icy cold being pressed against your back. A dull light shines in your eyes as your body aches to attention. Every muscle on your body screams out in agony. You slowly feel something soft restricting your range of movement. An intense sensation of something fluffy being shoved right in your nose almost makes you sneeze.

That's when you realize that Atsuko has buried her feet into your back sometime during the night. You're at the shrine, it's a couple hours before morning, and you still have a meeting to get to at the castle. A meeting that you would be early to attend if you left right now.

>Cont.

Next to you, Atsuko holds Keiko in her arms in a tight grip. She slowly turns over as you stand up and stretch your aching body. Madeleine is coiled into a ball on the back porch of the shrine. They are none the wiser that you've awoken.
Something about yesterday really wore you out. Barfights tend to do that, but this marks the first day here that you've had difficulty sleeping.

Maybe there's just a lot on your mind, maybe it's the alochol, or maybe a small part of you really is worried about someone who has been missing.

Nah, it's definitely the alcohol.

>Wake Madeleine up, get breakfast for everyone!
>Wake Atsuko up, you think it's about time to go.
>Nah, let them all sleep. They deserve it.
>>You may take the extra time this morning to do something on your own.
>>Like maybe going to the castle early, you could get some training in.
>>Like maybe learning how Yuuki was able to throw ice and snow from her blade. That's an impressive trick that you'd like to learn!
>>Or maybe investigating the ruined fortress you found by the shore the other day.
>>Or maybe trying to interrogate the prisoner, you might find some good info out while she's still half-asleep.

There's something Madeleine has been doing for you the past few days that you think you should pay her back in return.

Breakfast!
You used to cook! You used to be a great cook! Sort of. You made quite a few meals out of potatoes and oranges. And you've made bread from scratch, too! You sort of had to, that's one of the reasons people never gave you a hard time on your ship. Never give your cook a hard time.

You walk out back and set up the small stove and pot. You're going to make the best damn breakfast that you can out of what provisions are kept at the shrine.

Searching quietly, you find rice, flower, and potatoes. Perfect, that's all you need to make a full meal fit for a king!

--

Not bad.
A whole pot of well-cooked rice garners a plate of potatoes.
It's not your finest work, but you're more then happy given the coarse materials you had to work with.

"Jack?"
You turn around to see Madeleine rubbing her eyes. You hand a plate to her as you stir the pot of food.

"Morning Lass. I decided to pay you back for all those meals and dinners you've cooked."
"Oh wow!" her mouth is practically watering as she stares at it. "This looks amazing, I had no idea you could cook."

"It's a bit of a trade skill." You laugh.

You and Madeline almost finish off half of the food by yourselves. Spending the morning hours talking about practically nothing of importance. One particular topic of interest is her skin condition, which seems to be receding at a surprising rate.
You knew that there's no ailment of which seawater couldn't cure.

The sun has barely peaked over the horizon by the time you're finished. There's still an hour before you're set to meet the search party.
"So, what were your plans for today, Jack?" Madeline asks, leaning backwards.

>Still have time to go check on the castle before you have to leave.
>Maybe spend that time training with Fritelli!
>Maybe wake up the other two inside.
>Going to go scout before it's time to actually leave.

"Well Lass, I was going to get going early. With any luck, I can get everyone together and we can start searching early."

Madeline claps her hands together, "That's a good idea! I was going to go searching for some herbs after Atsuko wakes up."
"Gettin' back into the potion-making business, Lass?"

She crosses her arms, "I'll have you know I never left! I just had a little on the job accident, that's all!"

You both chat for a little while longer before you realize that you probably need to get going. At least you should, if you intend to get to the castle early before anyone else does.

--

The sun is just shining above the horizon. Usually now would be the time that you would wake up in the morning, anyway.

The castle guards are just handing off their night shifts to the morning shift. Dozens of well-dress soldiers mull around on the bridge leading into the castle.

One of those faces walking into the castle is Fritelli. She seems lost in thought as she walks.

"Ey! Fritelli!"
"Huh? Jack?"

She slows down as you catch up, her expression seems to soften as you approach.
"Ho, Hey Jack."
"Ye okay today, Lass?"
"I'm fine, just a lot on my mind, that's all."

That makes two of us.

You walk into the armory, it's the same clean and tidy storage that you've always known it to be. Axes, swords, bows, guns, any weapon you could think of lines the walls in a precise fashion.

"So Lass, what is this all about?"

She walks to a shelf and moves a few books aside. Then, as if she's trying to reach something, her arm stretches into a narrow hole.

Gently, she takes out a roll of cloth and leather before walking over to the workbench.
Unfurling the leather wrap reveals a line of tiny medals. Each one only being about as large as the palm of your hand. In total, there are five medallions.

Only, it seems like one is missing. It's almost as if there are supposed to be six of them.

"When I heard Biscotti was getting a hero, I called in a favor from a really powerful craftsmage whom I know."

She rearranges the pins, "I was going to get her to custom-make your barrier jacket, but you were summoned a little earlier than I was expecting so I just used a stock jacket."

Wait, so what you're using is just a regular stock barrier jacket?
"So instead, I asked for her to make some emblems for you. I got a little carried away when they arrived and gave one to Yuuki. Her summoner never got one, Anna never thought she would be fighting."
"Yar. Funny how things work out. So what dese emblems do?"

"These are magic focuses, Jack. Emblems use an energy known as 'Bright Power' which all living things emit. From this, you're able to use elemental magic."

"Elemental... Magic. And ye already gave Yuuki one? Let me guess, snow."

"Yuuki picked the teal colored one, which made her attacks have something to do with Ice. I guess the others follow the same pattern."

"I know which one I'm gonna take." You begin, a devious smile across your face. "All of 'em!"

You reach for the leather cloth, but Fritelli slaps your hand away.
"Jack, you can only use one at a time anyway. Besides, these don't give you magic powers."
"Eh? They don't?"

"No, they're focuses. They only teach you how to focus your energy. Think of it like learning to swordfight against a mannequin."
You can't relate, you learned how to swordfight against actual people.

She notes your confused look, "You're not learning how to use the medallions, you're learning how to use bright power on your own accord. These just give you a hand when you're just starting out. As you use these more and more, they wear down and need more energy to use. Eventually they completely wear down, but by that point you should be able to use magic proficiently without them. Otherwise these tiny medals would just get in the way of spellcasting."

You don't like the idea of things that are designed to fail eventually. You would rather have something that is strong forever and never wears down no matter how much you use it.
But you'll trust her on this, just this one time.

You pick up the little blue medallion. If the reasoning is correct, this must be the 'water' one.
How appropriate.

It's a small, shiny medallion with the emblem of a sword flanked by a flowing blue cape.
Hey! You could do some pretty neat stuff with something like this.

"So.." you begin, "How does this work? I burn a pentagram or do I dance for this one?"

She folds up the leather cloth and hides it back where it was.
"This way, I'll show you."

"Everyone off the field! Everyone off!" Fritelli yells to the few knights who have woken up for early morning training.

"Hey! What's going on?" One of the knights asks, she practices with a halberd that as tall as she is.
"Impromptu Emblem training, stay clear."

"Yeah bu-" She stops herself when she looks at you, "Oh okay.."

She carries her equipment off to the side and sits down.

"Okay! Let's go through the basics. First-level emblem training."
She focuses on her hand, rubbing it as if she's expecting to use it very soon.

Several seconds later, her hand is on fire!?
There's definitely a glowing light that has clung to her.

"Fritelli wha-"
"This is first-level Emblem magic. This is how you enchant yourself in order to use magic. It's the easiest to do, and you should have no problem doing it."

Without warning, she punches a nearby training dummy. The dummy practically explodes in smoke and soot.
She coughs lightly, dusting off her clothes as she walks.
"Your turn. Concentrate on the emblem."

You hold it lightly in your hand, before gripping your fingers around it. Just like how you learned to load magic ammo into your pistol, you slowly start to realize the feeling of charging yourself through the emblem.
A very intense blue light clings to the back of your hand. It stays there for almost a minute before flickering away when you lose the will for it to be there.

"Huh.."
"That's pretty good Jack. Now, let's do the same thing but now with your sword."

"Okay.." Fritelli says, nervousness creeping into her voice, "I'm not very good at this, but I'm going to give it a try."

She picks up a longsword and concentrates on the blade. Slowly, just like with her hand, a glow starts to form around her arms.

Seconds later, it's as if her entire body is engulfed by flames!
"Lass? Ye okay over there?"
"I'm fine.. I'm just not very good at keeping it up."

"Well maybe-"
You suddenly realize that she's casting a magic spell, and could easily turn it on you. So you resist the urge to follow up on that.

"Eh? Jack? What was that?"
"..Never mind."

That knight from earlier found that exchange hilarious. So you're glad at least someone picked up on it.

"Okay! Here it goes! Drive!"

With a swipe of her longsword, a single slash made of fire erupts from the tip of it. It dashes along the ground and hits the target dummy, dissipating in smoke. The dummy only barely shows signs of tear.
"Hey! That was pretty good, Lass!"
"No it wasn't.. It's supposed to pass through the target." She says, dejected. "I used to be great at it, but I've fallen out of practice. Quartermasters don't usually see much action."

She turns to you, "Well.. Your turn."

You think about the emblem in your hand, and the glow you felt when you channeled energy into it.

Instead of a burning sensation that you were expecting, it instead feels like you're taking a dive off the side of a ship. A cool, shocking aura seems to wash over your skin.
Drawing your cutlass, you take aim at the same target dummy.
"Rargh!" Is the best name you come up with for this attack.
Just like with Fritelli, a blue blade flies along the contours of the yard. It strikes the training dummy and cleaves it in half with a mighty splash.

"Good, good." Fritelli says, exhausted. "There's a third level after this but I can't do it anymore, and I don't want to strain you too much."

"Okay but." Fritelli starts, picking up her longsword, "I'm not very good at this."

"First thing to know about third-level emblem spells: They're self-sustaining. You're putting lots of energy into it so it can sustain itself. This is how you cast more than one at a time. Then when you're done, you take it down gently and slowly."
She readies her sword and starts glowing orange once more.

"So first you start with a second level, and then you slowly keep concentrating on it until-"

BOOM.

Without warning, the glow that had manifested itself behind her explodes in a hail of fire and smoke!
A powerful gust of intense hot air rushes over you.

Where Fritelli is standing is now a raging fire! Flames wrap around her body and pour onto the ground she's stands on!

You immediately rush at the blazing inferno, coat in hand.
"JACK WAIT!" Fritelli yells at you, she seems completely calm despite being almost completely immolated!

"I'm fine! These flames are made of my own spirit energy! They can't hurt me!"

She says as most of her clothing and armor falls right off of her and onto the ground.
"..What?" You say, dumbfounded.
"I said I'm fine! I just need to.. It's self-sustaining so I just need to remember how to withdraw it!"

She glows orange for a few seconds, and some of the flames waft away. But she's still mostly covered in them.

"Ferget this!" You yell, feeling the soothing blue waters wash over you once more. "I'm takin' care of the flames!"

Putting all your energy into your sword, and you do mean all of it, you let loose with the largest blast of soothing water straight in her direction!

Except you forgot about one thing...

So now she'll be wet, most of her clothes will be knocked of, and she'll be pissed.

Heroes are supernaturally powered people. They gain tremendous strength and energy from years of living outside of any kind of protective boundary. Even monks who train their entire lives in the mountains, far away from the barrier, don't have the same amount of stamina or energy as a summoned hero.
At least, that's what you've read. You're suddenly remembering it at the worst possible time.

"Jack! Wait! DON'T!"
Too late!

Instead of throwing a mere bucket of water, or even a continuous stream, you throw a WHOLE TIDAL WAVE straight at Fritelli!

Now she's not going to burn, she's going to drown!

"EMERALD BREEZE!"
There's a familiar voice, but you can't quite place where you've heard it.

Nearby, the knight who was watching this spectacle has now stood up and manifested a green aura of energy around herself and her halberd. Just like when Fritelli threw her fiery blade or when you threw a watery one, she instead conjures up the strength to throw a whole tornado!

At first the whirlwind catches the flames, the fire catches up into the wind and spreads it even further!
Then, the wave of water washes over the conflagration.

Water is caught up into the twister, creating a land-bound water spout. The waves and wisps of water wash the field and demolish the thick layer of smoke.

With a blast of cool, moist air; the tornado dissipates and flings an entire downpour of water in all directions! Coating everyone standing in the training yard. Including the knight, and including yourself.
And including the bystanders who have ran out of the castle to observe the sudden and inexplicable clash of fantastic forces.
Which includes Yuuki.

Fritelli stands absolutely still in the center of the mess, completely clean and naked. Before falling face-first into the muddy soil. The knight runs over and throws her cloak over her.

You run over to the knight, who is trying to pick Fritelli up while not losing grip of the cloak wrapped around her.
"Here! Let me carry her. Let's get her back inside before anyone else asks what's goin' on."

She strains as she hands her over to you. You're able to scoop Fritelli up into your arms without much effort.

The knight seems completely out of breath,
"W-wow, t-that... that took a lot out of me."
"Thanks for the help back there. I'm gonna take her to the guest room upstairs."
"Y-yeah.. I'll catch up."

Quickly, you push past the onlookers and head into the castle. You can feel Yuuki break off from the crowd and follow you upstairs.

You walk inside and lay her down onto the bed. Turning around, you nearly run into Yuuki.
"Jack! What happened!?"
"I.. Err.."

She stares at you with confusion.
"Whoops?"
"Jack, seriously! It sounded like a wave struck against the castle."
"Hold on Lass, that was only MOSTLY my fault."

She sighs,
"I'll ask her about it later, but most importantly, are you-"
"Hey?"

An out of breath voice makes itself known. It's the blue-haired knight from earlier.
"I.. Is she okay?"
"Yar. Thanks for the assist earlier."
"D.. don't mention it."

"See Yuuki? This is the person who saved the day here. What's yer name, Lass?"
"Noel.. and I have to say.. That has been the only time that skill has been useful."
