The trip to the river is mostly silent- not completely, by any means.
Your chitin clatters with each step, as usual for you not trying to creep around. Birds and animals and bugs go about their daily business without a care.

Not in your immediate vicinity, of course. But you can hear them. Your ears are pretty good.

You skitter around trees instead of through them, weaving your way towards the sound of running water.

Is evolving this early really that big a deal? The humans think it's weird, adventurers are cautious- but all the monsters kind of freak out. Maybe you can sit down and ask Mom about it. Not that that will stop people from panicking, but it'd be nice to know why.

You bend a branch out of your way, stepping clear of the treeline and onto the edge of the riverbank. A bit downstream from your camp, but that's not really any sort of issue.

Your friends look up as you file pull into view, smiling or waving as it suits them. The half-elf is the first to speak up.
"No bears this morning?"

Nin hold one hand to her chest, a look of mock surprise on her face.
"Lann! Whatever could you be referring too?"

You are not amused.

An illusory version of reverse rotation can be created via careful spoke placement and traveling at the right speed. Your brain does the rest of the work in processing what (to it) makes the most sense. It's trial and error, but it can be done.

>>37333781
You know, we never did indtorfuce ourselves to the tiny snakes did we?
Hell, we don't even know the mother's name and the only reason we know Esmeralda's is that her mother used it for scolding purposes.

Adopting new things has become so much of a second anture to us that it's more ingrained than telling people we meet our name.
>>
If we actually introduce Esmerelda as anything but tiny dirt snake I will be sad.
>>
>>37333937

I thought we introduced ourselves to her mother, though her mother never bothered telling us her name. I can't say I blame her with the strange bombs we dropped on her.
>>
>>37333979
Just checked.
We never mentioned our name.

We said hello and then we were distracted by Esmeralda whining that we insulted her, because she's a dirty little tattletale, and then got into another shouting match.

You casually flick your hair back with a toss of your head, raising your nose and looking down on them both. Pulling up next to the fire they've got going- One that Jin is utterly enamoured with- you turn sideways, revealing your cargo.

Lan blinks.
"Lyra, we can see that there isn't a bear. They kinda stand out. Size-wise."
"What- No. Not the food, you- The snakes, yes?"
"Snakes don't taste that good to begin with-"
"They are not for eating!"

You gesture angrily with both hands, palms open as you point out the women seated behind you.

"We would appreciate it if noone were to attempt to eat us. Were invited to breakfast, not for it."
Lann stares. Nin leans forwards.

"Everyone, this is Esmerelda and- ah. I did not ask your name, yes?"
"Lilliana."
"Esmerelda and her mother Lilliana, yes. And this is Lann, Nin, Jin, Sara and Sheszka."
You point out each as you make your way around the circle.

"And you?"
"Me?"
You stare blankly a moment before your cheeks heat.
"Ah- I am Lyra. Nice to meet you. Yes."

The snake-lady incline her head and smirks up at you.
"Nice to meet you as well, little one."
"She really isn-"
"Hush. Can you help Ezzy down? She appears to be afraid of heights-"
"AM NOT-"

You offer your hand again, despite the glare, while the mother slithers down your leg and joins the circle.
There's something of a stand-off going on your back, but Esmerelda breaks first, wrapping herself around your offered hand and letting you return her to the earth.

You do note that she tucks her face into your wrist, though.

You set about breakfast.

Webbing is torn apart, animals skinned and cleaned- Lann is a great deal faster at the cleaning that your are, but you take the top spot for skinning. Mostly because of knife-hands.

You conjure up a flat stone to cook on. Tiny snake jolts at the little bit of magic, but the mother just raises her eyebrows.
Slabs of meat are slapped onto the stone, sizzling as they touch down. You dice a few slabs for your guests- sharing glances with the mother and waiting for approval.

The scent of cooking meat has at least drawn the younger snake into silence. Instead, she's sitting coiled, weaving to and fro in the air, drooling and watching the food.
And while you certainly want to laugh, you can't say you don't know the feeling.

Well, in any case- Before food starts, there's a few things you want to know.
"Um. Lilliana? There is something I wanted to ask, yes?"
"Mhm? Go ahead."
"Well, uh- Is it really-"

Nin stands straight up, raising her hand like she's in a classroom. How does she even know to do that? Wait, no. She's already talking. The hand was a distraction. Bloody moths.
"What are you!"
You choke, right next to Esmerelda. Lann smacks a hand into her face, and Lilliana just starts laughing.

Nin sits right back down, folding her legs beneath her, waiting for an answer with a smile on her face.
You manage to get your lungs under control in time to fire back.
"What kind of question is that!"
"An important one? Do you know what they are?"
"No, I- That isn't the point, yes! It's rude! Right?"
>>
>>37335704
Nin shrugs.
"Is it?"
You blink a few times, and turn to the snakes.
Esmerelda's face is frozen in half amusement, half confusion at this point. Her mother looks over her to you, rolling her eyes.
"It seems rude, but it is a fair question."
"Please don't encourage her."
"All children should be encouraged, little one."

You groan, and Nin folds her arms and attempts what she probably believes to be a wise nod.
She still looks like a haughty child that just got away with eating all the cookies.

"We are Lamia, little moth. And your question?"
"Urg. Is evolving so soon really that strange?"
"Yes."
"But why?"

The lamia gestures helplessly.
"It takes time. Years, sometimes less. And you have grown twice? In less that two months. That is beyond strange."
"But- My friends have done it too, yes?"
"Have they?"
"Jin and Sheszka both!"

You get nods of affirmation from both when you turn to them.
"It is something to think about, then. But first: Breakfast, if you please."

You sigh.
Sometimes, there's too much you don't understand.
Which, you can sort of accept? You are a kid. Even if you don't feel like it. And you kind of are a sorta adult. But you really want to know things and it's frustrating to not and-
Ugh, you sound exactly like a kid.

Meat is passed around- Lann adds a bit of dry bread to her own, Nin scarfs down leaves that she produced from nowhere.
You glare at them. Plants can't be trusted.

Watching the lamia eat is a pleasure all it's own. You have no idea where all the food is going, but they certainly can fit a lot in their mouths. And they get sluggish the more they eat! Reptiles. You bet you could set up a sunning rock and they wouldn't move for days.

With the food gone, though- Well, there's things to be doing. Going home. No, baths first. You are filthy, and that needs to stop.

You crack your back, standing again.
You're not full, per say, but, well...

It takes a bit of food to fill you up. And it's probably for the best that you don't stuff yourself before you row down a river.

You back out of the circle, followed by the gaze of a comically lazy looking lamia- Esmerelda has curled herself into a chair, propping herself up with her own coils.

In front of you, away from the remains of breakfast, the ground is already sinking. Smooth stone is replacing it, a rather large bathtub forming in front of your eyes. Maybe you spoiled yourself a bit much with the waterfall and everything at home- You have reached the point where you are now building baths rather than hopping into rivers.

You shrug it off, willing a pair of channels- one high, and much wider, and one smaller, leading back to the river, tilted into the stream so the water simply rushes by it.

Water spills into the bath, filling swiftly, and you drop yourself in, planting your spider-butt in front of the entrance channel- You heat yourself, and in moments, you have a shield of steam behind you, and a rapidly warming bath.

It isn't long before you're joined by your friends, sliding into the pool you've made once they judge the heat has risen enough. Lazy lazy. You crack one eye, leaning back onto your shell, enjoying your soak.

Oh yeah, cleanliness.

A few seconds of dunking, scrubbing, and making a general mess of the pool and yourself- You feel like a whole new spider. Getting sweaty, then washing it all off- There's nothing like it.

And it's definitely something you didn't really engage in before.

A pair of tiny splashes draws all your eyes open again- Your lamia guests have joined in, slipping into the water and swimming, squirming through the water. You can't help but stare and smile as they move through the water, both heading straight for you. Ah. Well, that makes sense.
>>
>>37336660
>giant tortoise castle with airship hangar

REQM made joke we will be to young for thi sort of thing until we are 200 according to MOM.

Seriously, Lyra explicitly entered puberty several threads ago. The reason why she won't care about romance is because she herself was never that young since she came here.

I'm looking at the ask.fm right now, and it says about two years to reach sexual maturity, and a few months after that to develop interests.

At our current pace, that means approximately...

9000? threads before we are dating.

I think my math is wrong.
>>
>>37337031
For the same reason you are incapable of citing them, because they exist in your wishful thinking.

Lyra hving romance or not depends completly on REQMs dsire to write and incorporate it, Lyras or her companions age has nothing to do with it.
>>
>>37337003

Or she could, y'know, ask the Earth to move resource deposits closer, or slay a dragon and sell parts of it and keep it's hoard.
>>
>>37337079
>you can't date before full sexual maturity
To reach the equivalent of 18 anon. And he said it takes a few months "after growth" to take interest, not a few month after reaching sexual maturity.
You don't only start devloping interest after reaching 18.
>>
>>37337079
It says no such thing, please don't make things up.
>It varies for individuals- At the absolute most, 2 years. Many start to develop 'interests' a few months after their growth, some take to it earlier.

Note it takes a few months after "their growth", not a few months after reaching maturity.
I'm not even sure how you could misunderstand that, did you not have sexual interests before reaching 18?
>>
>>37337081
I'm looking at the ask.fm right now, anon. about a fourth of the way up. It takes years before they're ready to have kids. Young monsters are infertile.
It takes less time to start developing interests, but even that is a "years" timeframe, not a months.

Anyway, as for the math, let's see.
We're a month and a half, right? Which took us sixty threads. So to reach two years, we'd have to have 16 times the threads we have.

Which would be about thread 960.

>>37337122
or, if we assume the absolute shortest timeframe possible, a "few months", which is more than a couple, which is three, it would be at around thread 130.
Unless we're counting at a "few months" from growth, in which point I'd have to go back and look at when exactly we had our puberty evo and count from there.

either way, no time close.

>>
>>37337158

>>
>>37337148

Our age growth has probably just hit a major slow down in ways other than levels. That's another thing to consider.
>>
>>37337175
I don't know why you're pushing it so hard, myself. We've been shown to be young several times, and have answers saying it takes longer than our current lifespan to give a shit about it.
>>
>>37337178
Which is pretty normal, we are around 14-16 in human years. You usually slow down growing around that time.
If it takes 2 years for the full growth, we definitly had to slow down hard at some point, Lyra found her body in its early teens when we fought the lightning wolf. That was, not even week in.
>>
>>37337212
>We've been shown to be young several times
Physically, anon. Lyra is a 27 year old trapped in a 15 or so year old body.
And again 18 =/= earliest romantic interest.
>>
>>37337212
>I don't know why you're pushing it so hard
No one is pushing anything, REQm alone decides the time. You are just trying to make up absurd nonsense about the possibilites of Lyras love life just because you hate the idea so much. And thats just silly.
>>
>>37337242
This just in:
A child monster has a body that looks kind of teenage, but still doesn't have any of the capacities of a teenager or many of the desires.

And I don't know where you're getting that humans need to be 18 before they have kids. They almost universally reach the ability to have kids before getting any kind of romantic urges.
>>
>>37337274
You mean going along with how reQM is saying we won't be dealing with love for a long while?
>>
>>37337279
>And I don't know where you're getting that humans need to be 18 before they have kids.
Did it occur to you that Lyras ability to have kids is obviously not linked to her maturity in the same way humans are?
Humans start having the ability to have children in the early stages of puberty, this is clearly not the case for at least Arachne, because Lyra HAS entered puberty, but can't have children. The two things are not linked here, because she is not human.

>>37337288
Please show me the qoute of him actually saying that, or please shut up.
>>
Back, happily full and writing.
>>
>>37337322
He's been continuously trying to gently dissuade you people of going after romance immediately.
Every one of his ask.fm answers on the topic has a "later on" type of answer.

And you make a great point about her not being human. That means that even after apparent puberty, she could easily not start forming any romantic interests.
>>
>>37337322
Did it ever occur to you that puberty might not be linked to having romantic interests?
I mean, in humans puberty is when you engage in the process of being able to make kids. This is also when most romance type things begin to be expresses.
In monsters, these factors are all unhinged from one another.
>>
>>37337354
>gently dissuade you people of going after romance immediately
Except for the fact that no one is going after romance nor plans to go after romance.

And I note how still fail to cite any case of REQM saying that.

Look kid, I understand you don't want romance in this quest for reasons we both know and I don't want to start a argument over, but the simple fact is, REQM is gonna bring romance in when he wants.
Lyra is not "too young" for it, and he himself writing a short about Lyras puberty where Jin snuggles her budding breasts makes it pretty obvious he is not against people discussing and thinking about it either.

You are just going to have to live with that.
>>
>>37337353
How many bears did you eat?
>>
>>37337420
>look kid
aaand tacit admission of failure. Good work.

I challenge you to find a single ask.fm on the topic that didn't have a "later on" type answer. Because they all have later on type answers.

I also challenge you to find a topic reQM has ever been against people discussing.

And finally,
>Except for the fact that no one is going after romance nor plans to go after romance.
I challenge you to stop lying. People plan about this constantly, nearly every thread.
>>
>>37337420
>"Mom will be quick to point out that she didn't kidnap anyone, though." B-but we kidnapped everyone but Sheszka and Nin. Does that mean we can't marry Jin or Lann? Wait, does Sheszka being a prisoner first count as kidnapping? Does that mean that the only one eligible for marriage with Lyra is Nin?
Lann you only sort of kidnapped. Once. And you let her go when asked, too.
Nin was willing.
You ask every time before 'kidnapping' Jin. Not to mention that she demands to be taken along.
And Sheszka essentially considered herself your property from the moment you knocked her out. She'd have followed you home anyway.
Anyway, you're all less than a year old and thus nobody is eligible for marriage.

Here, something indicating we're too old for official relationships and probably too old for unofficial ones.

Now please, cite an example of romance this early being anything but a freak exception.

What?
In most societies, people marry WAAAYYYY after having their first romantic interest. Like, a lot earlier.
I'm not even sure what your point is trying to be.
>>
>>37337516
I'm not seeing any similarities.
>>
>>37337548

>Demands to be Kidnapped

>>
>>37337539
>arguing the citation
>providing none of their own
Citations please. Cite where it has been shown anywhere that romance this early is anything but a freak exception for us.
Every single time this ever has come up, it's always "romance later. much later."
There has been no instance where it has been anything but that.

Deal-fucking-with-it.
>>
>>37337559
But its not actually saying any such a thing. It just says she is too young for people to marry her. That has nothing to do with romance at all.
I could just as well go and say
REQm answering the question of
>How would Nin react to meeting a Moth in a serious relationship with a Noble Spider?
with
>Requests for more information.
As "evidence" for Nin considering marriage and romantic relationship with us already, thereby proving that thats already a thing in their age.
>>
>>37337593
That's more a citation for nin being a gossip than anything else.
Do you have anything on relationships or marriage?
or anything that actually applies to lyra, and not nin?
>>
>>37337619
Wait, are you seriously saying LYRA can't already consider romance? She is 27!
>>
>>37337593

>>
>>37337637
And now we've passed all the "oh it's totally okay for monsters at this age" arguments after showing it's not OK, and gone straight to "b-but lyra is 27".

and you know what the answer to that is?

It's fucking creepy to date anyone anywhere in our age bracket. Creepy as HELL.
>>
I vote that we deal with romantic plots if and when lyra first looks at somebody and starts thinking romantic things. Also known as "waiting until the QM thinks its appropriate to introduce to the story"

>>37337637

>>37337667
>And now we've passed all the "oh it's totally okay for monsters at this age" arguments

You were the one that took this away from that by saying that quote wasn't about Lyra.
>>
>>37337695

Wahts stupid is your insinstence of Lyra being "too young" when she isn't.
And neither are all of our freinds, considering Nin very clearly gets the lewd jokes as much as Lyra does.
>>

You make another dissatisfied noise as you pull yourself into a sitting position.
As much as you can, anyway.

You mutter something about over-spoiled overgrown children, but you grab Jin anyway.
The harpy makes a distinctly pleased noise, and Sheszka floats herself to the side opposite Nin, who is sitting with a grin like a cat who just got into the birdcage.

Oh yes, keep it up, Moth. The revenge is coming. Oh yes.

Jin coos, leaning up into your hands as you comb through hair, scratching her behind the tufts. And then you set her to one side, drawing her wing wide, carefully brushing feathers with a sweeping motion. You repeat it for her other wing before you reach beneath the water, hands rising with one of her talons.

You tuck the harpy against your chest as you work- No need to flip her upside down. The claws themselves are meticulously cleaned, but you can't say the same for her feet. Well, bird feet aren't anywhere near as difficult to clean as feathers, even if the bird in question is giggling and squirming as you scrub her feet and legs clean.

With Jin returned to a star-white rather than a 'I have been in the woods and am too lazy to bathe myself' brown, you exchange the harpy for a wolf.

Sheszka's hair definitely benefited from the brush you gave her prior, but it's still a gangly, tangled mess. You form up a bucket of stone, pouring water all over the wolf after directing her to hold her ears down. You draw out her hair with water and patience- It won't ever be straight, by any metric, but that's just fine.

A few scraps of rough woven cloth join you in the bath, and you set about scrubbing. You start with her ears, then arms and legs and back. Little waves radiate from behind the wolf- her tail providing a whirlpool all its own. You drop her next to you, having revealed a person beneath all her grime, and pick up the moth.
>>
>>37337932
we need to stop spoiling them.
they're so lazy.
>>
>>37337932
Nin smiles radiantly at you, one hand already performing absurd little court motions as she attempts to tell you how she's honoured or some other such nonsense.

You nod without listening to so much as a word, and dunk her into the water.
She comes up spitting water, and immediately takes double handful, spraying you in the face.
So you dunk her again.

Everyone is wet and laughing in short order.

The moth gets the same treatment as the rest afterwards- Minus the wing washing, of course. They aren't something to scrub. At least she has enough control of her dust now to not leak it into the water.

You scrub her scalp along with her hair, neatly combing back each antennae as she leans into you, closing her eyes and letting you work.
Lazy lazy lazy.

_________________________________________________________

With the bath drained and returned to its natural state as a riverbank, you have opted for sunning rocks to dry off.
You could rush home, but rushing home doesn't involve a wonderful warmth relaxing your muscles and not doing anything at all.

While you are at least allowed to sun your upper body against the stone, enterprising monsters have decided that your spider half is stone enough for them, spreading themselves all over everything.

Jin has simply flopped herself, wings open, across your skull, lying spread eagle and snoring. The snakes are apparently cozy where they are- Snoozing idly behind you. Nin requested her own stone, spreading her wings wide and letting them dry. Sheszka is next to you, and Lann and Sara are snoring somewhere.

Finding where would involve getting up though, so not happening.

They've been sort of sluggish and blissed out on food and warmth for a while now.

Doubt they've said anything since the meal.
>>
>>37338184
This will be amusing on the road I think. I can definitly imagine people outside the forest seeing it like that. Especially if we start carrying around our adventuring treasure.

really, replace stabbing the terrorist with stabbing some random bear, and it's basically this scene.
>>
It takes every piece of will, every ounce of strength you have.

You manoeuvre your hands beneath you, splaying your fingers out to get a better platform, pushing with everything you have.

Bit by bit, you lever yourself off the stone- though it feels like leaving behind a fragment of happiness, you persevere.
After the most intense battle of your short life, you stand triumphant.

Standing.

The sunning stone, your own traitorous creation, lies before you, unmoving, uncaring. You glare, stepping past it, heading to your boat. There is packing to be done!
Not much. People took care of that this morning. But still, work is work.

There is one thing though- You interrupt the snake-snoozing as you pile your stuff beneath benches with a question.

"Ah- Lilliana, Esmerelda. I need to ask, yes?"
"Nnn."
"Yesssss?"

"Was the tree your house? I did not break anything, did I?"
"Heee- No, no. We live beneath the ground, little one."
"Haaaah. That is a relief, yes."

It isn't long before the boat is ready- though it most certainly takes time to get people off their rocks and into it. Sara moans about her poor legs or something, so you carry her to boat and dump her in.

Lann decides that if you'll do as much to your sister there's no need for risks, and gets herself up and into the boat.
Jin folds neatly into a socket- Which is to say, you neatly fold Jin into a socket, as she has returned to the land of slumber from whence she came.

With your friends ready, the boat floating and regret burning in your gut as you banish the stones back to the earth- You give your farewells to the lamia.
They slither into the forest- far faster than you thought, too. They might have been able to keep up with you anyway. Huh.

A shove is all it takes to get your little dinghy moving, even weighed down as it is. You paddle into the centre of the river, and let the current take hold.

To hell with work today.

You've made quite a bit of progress when a tiny head pops out from beneath Lanns seat, looking side to side suspiciously.
Esmerelda's tongue flicks out idly, tasting the air as she looks up at you.

"I don't know how you managed to grow so fast, web-butt. But there's no way I'll let you go without finding out."
>>
>>37338485
maybe we'll see them again some day.

Mark this place on our minimap.
>>
>>37338495
Freak the fuck out.
Did we just kidnap a little snake?
does your mom know about this?
oh god oh fuck
>>
>>37338495

Ah! Ninjas! Tiny Ninjas!
>>

Once again the seductive spiderbutt has torn a innocent young monster-girl away from her home.

"You're feeding them"

>>
>>37338495

"No, tiny snake butt. You will ask your mother before we take one more step back the way I've come from."
>>
>>37338495
And that's it for tonight!
Next thread will probably be thursday!
Comments, questions and concerns answered in thread!
>>
>>37338495
Oh shit. Snake mom will think we are the monster candy van.
>>
>>37338495
I do hope her mom knows she did this. Don't want an angry Lamia mother after our Giant Spider ass.
>>
>>37338567

Thanks for running, REQM
>>
>>37338495
>I don't know how you managed to grow so fast, web-butt. But there's no way I'll let you go without finding out.
...well it's actually quite easy, first you go looking for the biggest meanest looking monster you can find, then you fight it... that and lots and lots of training from a borderline sadistic teacher whenever she see that you have enough energy to walk.
>>
>>37338536
>>37338550

Esmerelda will become convinced the way to evolve is to collect followers

>>37338567
Thanks REQM. Makes sure Moths don't spirit you away in the night to become a sovereign in some convoluted plot
>>
>>37338495
"Your Mother doesn't know about this, does she? She will not know where you have gone and will think you have been killed by a predator."

*turns the damn boat around*

"Come on then, I'm not going to let a Mother cry herself to sleep in grief for no reason."
>>
>>37338567
We did it again, REQM! Why do we keep doing it?! What is the spiders secret?

Thanks for running!

Our group is really getting a bit big...
Not complaining about tiny snakes. But, just saying.
>>
>>37338567
so how pissed is Lilliana going to be when she finds out her daughter is chasing giant spiders around?
>>
>>37338567
Can we go and tell the snake that her daughter is with us and not, you know, dying somewhere?
>>
>>37338600
No reason to be so melodramatic about it. I doubt her mother can't add 2 and 2 together to come up with how her daughter disappeared.
That being said.
Its not impossible she thinks we kidnapped her.
>>
>>37338567
thanks for running

is it just me or was the thread a lot shorter tonight?
>>
>>37338600
This is exactly my concern.
that poor mom!
>>37338611
That's EVEN WORSE!
>>
I say we go back to her mom, even if she claims she has permission. Don't trust the tiny snake enough to take her word for it.
>>
>>37338611

She knows it's probably her daughter's doing. However, she won't know where she's gone if we don't tell her. It's a big forest, there are a lot of spiders, and she's a very small lamia.
>>
>>37338640
>>37338633
yeah. we need to at least tell the big snake how to find us.
>>
>>37338611
Forest full of deadly, deadly, monsters.
Unlike us, Tinee Snek is not a stupidly powerful Apex Predator.
Assume the worst if a child suddenly goes missing in the Monster Forest.
>>
>>37338640
>She knows it's probably her daughter's doing.
I see it going that way, largely because its "funnier", I guess.
But on the other hand, REQM said he tries to convey thaat this is a dangerous world, so it would fit into that.

We'll see. No way we just take her without going to her mother first anyway.
>>
>>37338674

I'd be surprised if mom got more than ten body lengths without noticing she's gone.
>>
>>37338672
>Assume the worst if a child suddenly goes missing in the Monster Forest.
Thats why I said kidnapping is more likely, she saw her with us last time, and its pretty obvious to make the connection.
We ARE a giant Apex predator who grows mysteriously fast and has completly unknown motives.
For all she knows we eat young monster girls to keep us young looking/help us grow faster
>>
>have dinner with warlord and 70 goons

Lyra seems pretty okay with. The more the merrier, afterall.
She can deny it as much as she likes, but secretly her goal is to find ALL the monsters, and then pet their pettable parts.

we have to go return this lamia immediately. We took it in bad faith.
