/tg/ - Traditional Games

You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Having been invited by Karel and Emilio, you and Carina followed them to Sir Gregory's house to have breakfast with Ariane and the others. After Rana popped in and took Carina for a tour of the mansion, Karel took you and Elena aside for a private conversation.

About Inaba. Who's apparently able to turn into a little girl.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

Now that she's actually wearing clothes, the sheer absurdity of this situation is able to set in. Inaba, Elena's pet rabbit, just turned into a human.

And also she can talk.

While you've been told about this kind of thing happening and even met a similarly ascended animal (at least you're pretty sure that's what Akemi was), having it happen right in front of you is decidedly different.

"So, uh..." Karel scratches her head, "...this is what she looked like yesterday when she punched that Salamander. Except now she's wearing clothes."
"Don't like," Inaba mumbles as she tugs at the fabric of her nightgown.
"Well you gotta wear clothes since you're a people now," Elena says, pulling the bunny girl's hand from her dress and taking it in her own.
"...I wear clothes," she says with a reluctant frown. "But no cage. And I sleep here now," she says, pointing at the bed.
"'kay," Elena nods. "It'll be like a slumber party every night!"

Unable to hold herself back any longer, Elena leaps towards her friend and hugs her as tightly as her little arms can manage.

It's funny, because for a moment I too entertained telling fluff to go as a third party to the exchange. Especially given the reputation he has amassed and the running gag that /tg/ is /d/-lite. I thought better of it, because even if they're worth the occasional chuckle, such off topic conversation only serves to hasten our march toward autosage:

Then someone responded as I had thought to, and I lost my sides.

Bravo, anon. No offense, fluff, but you walked right into that one.

"I guess we ought to head downstairs and tell everyone about, well..." you gesture towards Inaba.
"You sure?" Karel asks. "Because this is kinda..."

Still hugging Inaba, Elena turns her head towards KArel.

"Kinda what?" Elena asks. "'Cuz this's no more weird than you turning out to have been a girl all this time."
"I walked into that one," Karel says, shaking her head. "Go ahead and do whatever you want, she's your responsibility and all."

You're pretty sure that Guillaume isn't the only one who would be shocked by this sudden happening.

"But first," Elena says, "We gotta get some things straight before we do that. 'Cuz I don't want you embarrassing me in front of everybody."
"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea," you reply with a nod.
"first off," Elena holds up a finger, "no running around naked when you're like this. 'Cuz people wear clothes."
"Already said that I wear clothes," Inaba replies, crossing her arms.
"And part of clothes is that you gotta wear something UNDER that dress," she says as she heads back to her drawer. "'Cuz it's just gross if you don't."
"...under?"

Karel screams as Inaba starts to lift her dress... fortunately, you're able to spun around and look in the opposite direction before you see any more nakedness.

Ya know, I've been wondering this a while now and I'm not sure if it's been confirmed or not:

Is there a direct correlation between the 'awakening/ascendency' of an animal or an entity and the 'human factor'? Cause so far the only two cases of an ascendency or manifestation of the soul that we've been personally privy to is that of Inaba and our sword: both entities which were practically engulfed in attention, affection and personal dedication and care from their partners/owners.

Basically I'm asking if this is kind of akin to that ol' Shinto type of ascendency for beings, where the amount of human focus and thought given to the object of faith/worship/affection or even distrust/hatred/vilification is directly responsible for that object taking on a human will or identity.

You hear plenty of rustling fabric and angry grumbling on the part of Inaba, but after a few seconds of this Karel finally gives you the okay to turn back around.

"Didn't think she'd have a tail..." Karel sighs.
"I always have tail," Inaba replies matter-of-factly.
"Sure, sure..."
"Now that you're wearing panties, on to the next rule," Elena says. "You're a people and people are sposta use the TOILET. I'm not cleaning up little girl poop, that even worse than normal bunny poop."
"...toilet?"

With an exasperated sigh, Elena drags Inaba into the bathroom that's attached to her room and spends the next few minutes on an in-depth explanation of how toilets work and when one is supposed to use one. You and Karel can't help but laugh at this.

And then you realize that such an explanation is probably completely necessary so you're suddenly VERY grateful that Elena thought to do so before something unpleasant happened.

>[3/?]
>>
>>37322109
I'm pretty sure he's worried about the toilet for another reason though.

After the "how to use toilet" lecture is done with, Elena and a very embarrassed Inaba emerge from the bathroom.

"I think that's good enough," Elena sighs. "And I can show her how to use forks and spoons and stuff when we get downstairs."
"Alright," Karel nods. "Is she gonna be okay with using the toilet?"
"YES," Inaba nods very emphatically.

At least she seems to have SOME sense of shame...

Well, I'd assume it's much like how other narratives handle the notion of self-awareness. It's probably a strange kind of foreign sensation of enlightenment. Kind of like spending your whole life with your peripheral vision blocked, and then the shutters are removed and your field of vision is broadened and expanded and you perceive the whole world differently. And through this new perspective, you view yourself differently as well.

The answer is actually "No", unless you think you're somehow better now than you were back then.

for a large majority of us, that's usually not true
>>
>>37322984
Or maybe the turkey eating is the result of his ancestor defeating the turkey lord and his army of unascended turkeys. A seer has prophecized that if a turkey is left undevoured for more than five years the turkey lord will be reborn to complete his conquest of Granache.
>>
>>37322743

"Why didn't you tell me that you could do that then?" Elena asks.
"Don't know," Inaba shrugs. "Scared? Did not understand... before that was dumb, only cared about food and scratches and now not like that. Still feel weird..."
"It's okay," Elena says, hugging her bunny again. "I'll be right there if you need anything."
"Okay," she smiles faintly.

You can't even imagine how much of a shock that must've been...

"Then dragons attack," Inaba says, "and Karel was fighting and I want to help so I change and fight. Hit it good, right?" she turns to Karel.

That's not even taking into account if the things you learned have been good for you, or if you only tell yourself that because of your biases.

What would be pretty sad if is you're unable to tell the two apart and simply tell yourself that you're better than your past self on the merit that you've existed for a slightly longer amount of time.

"After Elena... I like Andreas. Miss him lots."
"I do too."
"Then is Karel," she points at her, "then is... umm... Papa?"
"Papa?" Karel asks.
"Yes. Papa. Long hair. Gray. Looks angry except when with Elena."

>That just means you're self-absorbed into thinking that understanding"yourself" has made you a better person.

'Cept nobody ever said anything about being smarter or dumber reflecting a concept of being a 'better' person.

All it ultimately comes down to is this: Over those years, have you gained a better understanding of yourself and the world around you? Over the course of five years, the answer SHOULD be yes.

Being a 'better person' doesn't factor at all into it.

Really, the only person here that's relaying these things as a notion of 'high self-opinion' so far has been you. The ability to self-judge and take stock of oneself, and one's own experiences, to look back and go 'I was pretty dumb/naive/inexperienced here' or 'I actually am pretty impressed with myself back then because of how I handled this issue' is a healthy exercise in maturity and internal development. It doesn't mean you understand 'yourself', it more means that you understand who you were in contrast to who you are now.

Hell, nobody truly understands themselves as they are now, they can only measure it by their past. If a person were to understand the 'self' as it is now, they'd become the next freakin' Buddha or the likes. That's what the whole notion of Nirvana is, after all, the nigh-impossible pursuit of self-understanding.

>All it ultimately comes down to is this: Over those years, have you gained a better understanding of yourself and the world around you? Over the course of five years, the answer SHOULD be yes.

Most people say yes, but very few actually manage to accomplish anything of worth in five years that helps them understand themselves or the world around them. Most people, yourself probably included unless you've done something that has defined you as a person in the last five years, spend every five years in the same routine only scraping by via changing what their dreams and aspirations are. Very few of either of those they accomplish.

>Really, the only person here that's relaying these things as a notion of 'high self-opinion' so far has been you.

The reason I decided to respond to you in the first place was because you said this:

>So what you're saying is that you have learned absolutely nothing in the past five years that might have somehow broadened your perspective on the world and how your view yourself.

So the one who introduced it into the conversation was yourself, not me.

>If a person were to understand the 'self' as it is now, they'd become the next freakin' Buddha or the likes. That's what the whole notion of Nirvana is, after all, the nigh-impossible pursuit of self-understanding.

>So the one who introduced it into the conversation was yourself, not me.
Is false, seeing as before I even said that, you declared:
>The answer is actually "No", unless you think you're somehow better now than you were back then.

In fact, that was your opening statement upon entering this discourse. If anything, you've come into this with a set prerogative and mindset from the start, which is ultimately what takes this conversation from 'next to worthless' to 'completely pointless and futile', seeing as you have no intent of even open-mindedly discussing the subject with the thought to understand someone else's perspectives.

I did enjoy it too, actually. I was really just sniping back for the 'worthless' remark, ultimately because, well, really, if you're gonna take it as a personal insult if someone ribs you for your opinion - on 4chan of all places - then that's just silly. I'm glad you enjoyed the conversation as well, at any rate. Just because we have a difference of view, at any rate, I don't see that as any cause to think any less of the other.

Besides, I think that the slightly barbed words was just more of an indication that both sides feel passionate about the subject of discourse and debate, rather than perhaps the topics themselves that were being debated. That's just my opinion at least, I don't know if you see it that way outside of acknowledging that we did land on a pretty weird subject matter.

So the bunny girl has you on her list of people who she likes. That's nice to know.

"Alright," you say, giving your arms a good stretch as you head to the door, "I guess we should head downstairs and tell everyone about Inaba already."
"Yeah," Karel nods. "Maybe we'll be able to eat soon, too..."
"Hear that?" Elena turns to Inaba. "Food!"
"I hope is good," Inaba nods.

And with that, the four of you make your way out of Elena's room and head downstairs. Along with the disappointment you feel about the fact that breakfast still isn't done yet, you also have a bit of an impasse here.

I just wanted to see if the turtle mentioned Ascension in regards to mechanics. If it's a known mechanic that people know the cause of, or if it's just something that "happens".

Because if it's something that "happens", how does 100% of any species ascend? Surely some of them would be 'immune' or simply lack the means of ascending? I don't even think a full-on plague on that species would have taken it out 100%.

Otherwise it seems like something people knew about and triggered intentionally.

Hey.
I only SORT OF wanted to know that.

Also I sort-of wanted to know if Dragons themselves are ascended beings but just happen to be able to revert to their dragon form at will.

I remember at one point Arch mentioning that the 'human' form is actually the humanoid dragon form, of which humans are just stuck in for some reason while Dragons get all of it because they're higher on the world's priority chain.

I think that's how it works, can anyone remind me?

dragons in human form are still dragons, that's how half-dragons happen. Meanwhile two dragons in human form will produce a full dragon who is born in human form.

Where it gets fun is that an elemental spirit copying the HUMAN FORM of a dragon, mating with a dragon in human form, produces a half-dragon - while if the spirit imitates a dragon, and then turns into a dragon in human form (rather than imitating the human form directly), the resulting child is a full dragon.

One theory for the origin of humans is elementals directly copying the human form of dragons (rather than copying a dragon outright then just shifting to a dragon in human form) then having kids with dragons, IIRC.

as animals live longer, they give off more and more magic. If they live long enough, they spontaneously gain a soul, and the ability to transform. It is likely that Inaba could transform before, and had no reason to do so, with the result of her not know she could. It wasn't until she decided that she needed to help Karel that she did so. It seems similar to Prosegana, who spent hundreds of years doing nothing but looking up, until he saw a dragon fly over head. That was when he first transformed. The similarities would also explain why Inaba can talk already, as once Prosegana understood the concept of talking, he learned the language impossibly quickly, but still didn't understand things like violence or flight mechanics past "wings can make me fly". As for the 100% I find it likely that the foxes can transform once they try, but never see a reason to attempt, kinda like why Inaba never bothered.
However, this is all conjecture based on Inaba having been ascended for a while, and only yesterday figuring out what that entailed.

Figuring that disturbing the chefs before they've finished cooking will only serve to prolong your wait, you pass by the kitchen and instead head to the living room where you left Bernard and Emilio not too long ago. As you enter the room, you notice that someone with long white hair has their back to you.

"Reinhold!" Ariane shouts, turning just enough to face you.

...Ariane? She's not in the kitchen?

"Uh, hi," you say, waving to her. "Sorry to show up unannounced, but there's som-"
"Never mind that, I already told you that you're welcome over here whenever you want to visit!" Ariane says. "But more importantly..."

She spins around to face you, and you notice that she's hugging Carina while she does so.

"Why didn't you introduce me to this cutie when you got here!?" Ariane shouts. "She's adorable!"
"Ehehe..." Carina giggles, very appreciative of all this attention that Ariane's showering her with.

"IT depends on the animal," Ariane says, finally having regained her composure. "I know that foxes have to put in extra effort not to have their ears and tails show, and that gets harder over time since they sprout multiples of those as they age..."

Same choices and everything, but with Kirei instead of Reinhold...though I'm not sure how the whole Spinelle past/Citrine reunion would go...

"Aww!" Elena kneels down to where her rabbit is. "C'mon Inaba, don't be like that!"
"Hm?" Takamaru glances at the Princess. "Is something the matter with your rabbit?"
"She's all sulky I guess..." she sighs. "C'moooon, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you mad when I said that."

In another poof of smoke, Inaba reappears in her human form. You're pretty surprised to see that her clothes seemed to have remained on her human body instead of being left behind when she turned back into a rabbit.

"Whoa!" Reya backs away. "What the hell!?"
"Inaba ascended," Ariane says with a tired sigh.

Reya seems to accept this quickly, but Takamaru's mouth is agape and he's pointing at the bunny girl in absolute shock.

...and you shall be my muse. I'm already picturing how Kirei tells Marianne, and it'll be one of the only times she's ever seen him smile, thinking on his hatred for her, and the sight of one human causing another such pain and trauma...yes, yes this will happen...again, long as Archelon doesn't say "please don't" or some such.

>>
>>37326674
He's from Tenryou.

I think the people butthurt about that are from Saperavi or something. One of the countries bordering Kinsei.
>>
>>37326687
He's from Saperavi. I'm not sure if the common folk care or not, but the royalty is rather human centric, and has been giving Sadaharu shit for marrying Akemi due to this.

It's a known mechanic. Upon reaching a certain amount of magical energy gathered within an animal's body, a soul will form.

In the case of foxes, their base levels were very close to this limit to begin with and they accumulated more of said energy over time than other animals so it was a very common occurrence for them to ascend during the cource of their normal lifespans.

And since an ascended animal that mates with its own kind will produce offspring that is already ascended, eventually the numbers of foxes with this status outbred those who would have to progress to it and now they're all magic.

Covering his face with his hand, Takamaru mumbles something in his native tongue.

And then Inaba responds in that same language. Takamaru seems to be even more surprised by this, taking a few seconds for what she just said to register before speaking to her some more. Unlike her conversations with you upstairs, Inaba seems to be speaking as naturally as anyone else right now...

...maybe her weird way of speaking was because she was trying to speak in what was a foreign language to her?
