"Mistake," Manifold said.

"Let me be the judge of that," I replied, whatever I felt bleeding into my voice.

Warrior looked between the two of us, his frown deepening. When neither Manifold or I ventured an explanation, he clicked his tongue and turned away. We followed, and made our way upstairs to the landing pad. Helpers, assistants, gofers and aides swarmed around us, pushing pads and the latest printouts in our hands. It all boiled down to ‘lots of people are going to die if I don’t get there fast’.

Logos was already up there, next to the helicopter, butterflies flocking around him. They were glittering in the floodlights. He grinned, said something in his -other- voice, and the swarm gathered around his silouhette, obscuring him from sight. An instant later, it dispersed, and he was gone. Should take him about three hours to get to Perth, Manifold said. Too late.

I bunched my hood and cape together and tied them around my neck. Even with my telekinetic field, they would only increase my drag and tire me out. Even if the energy I used was ‘transdimensional’ (or so said Manifold after studying my power), pushing myself still took its toll on me. I cleared the last few hurdles before I could intervene, and gave my dues to the bureaucracy. Then I put my UN phone in the Faraday cage pocket and jumped for the skies. I had a last thing to do before leaving.

Appearances are important, I had to make a statement. High up above New York City, I twisted the air around me with my field, arms extended into a cross. Plasma erupted, and for a brief moment, I flared. A miniature sun brightened the night. I am there, it said. The Sun Goddess never left.

I set off. I had to push it. The fastest I had been clocked was 1.5 miles per second, and I needed to top that with a margin if I was going to make it. I dodged Jersey City to avoid the sonic boom waking up every sleeper. Then the plains, Texas, Mexico, and I finally could do what I enjoyed most, flying backwards, almost lounging, watching my shockwaves on the ocean. I dug my phone out of its pocket and tried to listen to the chatter, but technology had a way of messing up when I was flying that fast. At least the GPS utilities worked.

The sun rose as I headed westwards and I turned around to watch the quick dawn. I pushed myself even more, and I concentrated to keep the airflow within my field to comfortable levels. Beneath the costume, I’m only human.

Perth, finally. A bit late, but there was no Kaiju in sight. I flared again, to signal my arrival, and contacted Manifold. The roar of his jet almost covered the words, but I got the gist of it.

"—no ETA, I re— — ETA. It’s — something, a — —,— will — out the coast. I repeat, — — something, a tidal wave—," he said, then static noise covered the rest.

"What are you saying exactly?"
"Well, just that, really," Logos replied to his bewildered host, a young man with a bushy beard matching his own.
"That you’re...what? A god? The Second Coming of Jesus Christ?"
"Yes to the former, no to the latter. It’s really simple. I just worship myself. I fully believe in my godhood, and well, I do have the miracles to prove it, wouldn’t you agree? You don’t even have to take in on faith," he said, with an easy laugh.

*

There wasn’t anything I could do against a tidal wave. I looked down. Streams of cars, people on foot, some loaded up with pieces of luggage, kids, and that family holding a... A piece of furniture? Jesus, people, really? I unfurled my cape, put on my hood, the throat mike and the earbud before dropping down to the street. I slammed in front of the moron family. Two boys, pops, mom. The problem was obvious.

"Let that dresser go, and move!" I said to the woman. The three men in her family looked chastized already. She didn’t.

"No way I’m leaving it behind," she said, poised, calm, after looking me up and down. She was a good few inches taller than me.

[Cont.]

>>37306884
Didn’t matter, no time to lose, and I was already helpless enough. I let some of the unwordly energies powering me seep in front of my eyes, for effect. She recoiled from the oppressing heat.

"Do you really want to make me repeat myself?" I asked her, with considerable emphasis on ‘me’.

She shook her head but didn’t move.

"GO!" I shouted above the sounds of the crowd, for her and the other rubberneckers. They finally started to move. God, I always hated doing that. Making people feel like crap because their instincts are all thrown in disarray by the unknown.

I zipped between and above the crowd, helping up the people who fell, shouting at drivers to leave their cars, putting said cars somewhere they wouldn’t disrupt the flow of evacuees, and asked every few minutes for updates. There was a massive column of water growing a few miles away from the harbor. A tsunami in the waiting.

"Logos online," said a voice in my earbud.

I almost said ‘God thank you’, but I would never hear the end of it. Not that his teasing would last very long for me.

"Logos, you’re on evacuation duty, ask Manifold for news!"

I didn’t wait to hear his reply. I rushed between two towers standing proud near the coastline. I probably bruised a few ears and shattered a few windows on my way.

Even from that far away I could see the column rising in the air. It looked a miles high. I really hoped Logos was up to it, there was no good end if he didn’t. I managed a warning about an impeding tsunami across the Indian Ocean before hitting the water.

I hit something hard and black, fists first, going from thousands of miles an hour to zero instantly. My lungs did something funny as they tried to breath vacuum. The impact had expelled the water around me, with nothing to replace it.

The beast moved back, and the water started to fall around me, blurring everything around and dragging me down into the deeps.

It took me a dozen of seconds to gather my wits. They felt like hours, up and down indecipherable from each other. But finally I was up in the air again, shivering in the damp fabric of my costume.

The first thing I saw was the water falling. Slow and momentous, the blue of the ocean turning to white froth as the titanic column felt the Earth’s pull. I could see the black shape of the Kaiju, but I couldn’t get a sense of its structure? I think it’s the word. It was just a hole in my sight, no lines to see how its limbs moved, no perspective to get a sense of it. Before the water hid it again, I was able to see something like a crack in the middle of its mass, pulsing white. Then all I could see where ripples in the ocean, writ large.

There was nothing but crackle in my ear. At best, an irritation, at worst, a distraction. I pulled the earbud out and let it fall in my collar.

I had had an effect. Now, I just had to pound that thing until it died. Fortunately, I had some experience in that matter.

The water bounced back, and it reminded me of my childhood, the long hours where I had nothing better to do than throw rocks into the water. Only much bigger. I was glad I still managed to be awestruck at the sight.

I glimpsed the beast as the ocean receded and I pounced forward, feet first, then circled around it, sonic booms punctuating each acceleration. There were more lines appearing on its skin every time I struck. I could make a sense of what it looked like now, with the faint glow delineating its body. A centaur-thing on four legs, with four more arms. I had managed to strike it where its eyes would be if it had any. Little nodes of light. It didn’t even try to bat me away, or retaliate. It moved with each of my punches and kicks, but didn’t do much.

I saw the lines glow brighter. Then they blazed.

I was embedded into rock. I didn’t know where I was, and my vision kept shifting out of focus. When I wasn’t seeing double, everything was fuzzy. I could make out the horizon, and the brighter blue of the midday sky was how I knew I was upside-down. After forcing my way through the face of the cliff, I tumbled for a few feet, feeling dizzy and wrong. I had never felt like that since I had my powers.

There was something very wrong with me, and I didn’t even feel any pain.

No need to panic. Absolutely none, I’m not having a stroke, or a seizure, or whatever it is brain cancer does, because I’m a fucking hero, and we don’t die like that.

I was hyperventilating, my chest almost painful as my ribs did too much of a good job at getting air inside me. I shut everything out of my field, and my lungs did another funny. When I let myself breathe again, I was better, if even dizzier.

Right, big monster, people in distress, big-time hero.

I started hovering but I had to go slowly. Unsteady wings, so to speak. I could see something in the blue expanse of the ocean, almost in front of me. The water was weird, but I couldn’t quite figure out what was happening. I edged forward, in fits and starts, stopping every time the vertigo was too intense.

Fuck me, the Kaiju was making another wave.

I stopped making faces at the Kaiju, or rather the mass of water growing around it. My eyes just couldn’t focus. I didn’t know if I would be able to see the telltale blaze before being blown away if I got near. I picked my earbud out of its nest between my breasts. I had stopped shivering. I didn’t know whether that was a good or a bad thing.

"Anybody online and able to speak?"

Crackles, crackles, crackles. I switched channels, hoping there wasn’t anything wrong with the device.

"Anybody?"

"—met?"

"Warlord? Do you hear me?"

"— to wideband. Jam—"

I fiddled with the utilities on my phone until I was on UWB. I had to squint to distinguish the letters.

"Sekhmet? Do you hear me?" asked Warlord, his voice full of the calm that only came with majorly fucked-up situations.

"Yes, yes, I’m here, I need help, I think—" I hesitated, but took the plunge. "I think I’m having an attack, or a stroke, I don’t know, requesting assistance, I repeat: requesting assistance."

I barely managed to avoid panic creeping into my voice. Warlord made a noise.

"Listen, we have you in front of Quellenherscher, don’t engage, repeat: do not engage."

"Quellen—what?"

"Quellenherscher, the Kaiju’s codename. German month. I’m getting suited up, do not move, and do not engage."
>>
>>37310561
Does this mean we're late for prom and our date will be mad?
>>
>>37310577
He clicked off, and I was alone, looking at Quellen...something. Or rather at the pillar of water emerging from the ocean in which he hid. It took some time for Warlord to come, but even with my fucked-up eyesight, I could see the hole that appeared near the base of the column. He had said he hadn’t been cleared for the Shift Suit, didn’t he? Two more holes appeared as the vacuum of the first got filled with whatever was around. Another, and another, each use of that weapon running the suit’s power source a little flatter. We’d pay for that at some point. There was a last blast, and it was over. Beads of water flattened against my field. The ocean stilled.

I didn’t see him until he was almost on me. My earbud crackled.

"Sekhmet?"

"I—I’m there, I’m al-alright," I said. A big shudder shook me, and I started shivering again. No, shaking. Summer in New York, winter in Australia. Warlord moved, though I couldn’t quite see exactly how. Holding up his arm?

"How many fingers?"

"I—I d-don’t know. I c-c-can’t focus m-my eyes."

"Fuck," he muttered.

"L-Language," I said, more by force of habit than anything else.

"A-Already ha-have. D-Damage c-c-control c-comes first," I said without managing to shackle my jaw. Another big shudder went right through me.

"I don’t care. Stop."

"W-Watch me."

I hobbled towards the city, Warlord on my heels. But he got it, he didn’t come to my rescue when I dropped a few feet, only moving when I dropped a hundred. I put my hand up after I got myself together, concentrating through the headache sneaking up on me.

I’m fine, I repeated myself. Just bite the bullet.

I touched ground. The water was as high as my knees, the pleasure boats were on their side, the pavilions flat and spread-eagled. There was trash being washed away by the waves, uprooted trees, rubble and glass floating in the muddy tide. But no bodies as far as I could see. I felt some of the pressure inside my head ease up. Just a bit. I hovered forward, my feet dunking in the water here and there.

I helped a bunch of people trapped inside a convenience store; out of a tree, a cat which subsequently tried and failed to scratch at my face; kids huddled together, soothed by a teenage boy who looked scared out of his mind. I cracked a few heads too, but mostly I got to help good people, even if I could feel a half-grin I couldn’t quite suppress whenever they tried to thank me in their Australian twang.

I felt a hand on my shoulder, and I turned to look who it was. Warlord, his suit’s Gravity Orbs floating around him, his face and arm free from the suit. He was scowling, with a hint of worry in the corner of his eyes.

"You’re done."

I was kneeling in the water, not quite managing to get on my feet or in the air.

"I-I guess I am."

I'm as confused as you.

I hope you're kidding, QM.
>>
>>37312217
>>37312244
Doesn't make much sense to me either

Don't be coy.

>>37312036

These are the same thing QM, don't be a dick.
>>
Didn't MC have a BFF? We should probably get around to talking to them later.
>>
>>37312310
QM is obviously not the only person in this thread confused by the addition of
">WHAT IS THE OTHER OPTION"
>>
>>37312275
Ohhh, that. Dohoho.

Should be explained next update since apparently mostly everybody wants to come clean. This will also be my last update for the day.

Supporting.

"I have brain cancer," I said. "Terminal. Manifold said I had a few weeks, at the very most. I think I have even less now."

I had stopped shivering, and the headache had subsided, but I still wasn’t seeing very clearly. I had my eyes closed, I didn’t want to see their faces in case I had a moment of clarity. But I heard my team shuffle around. And the Director of the UN Special Response team, otherwise known as "The Line". Us. Last ditch defense against the shit the universe throws at mankind. At my request, everybody else had left my room, and those four were huddling around my heart-shaped bed. I smiled a bit at that. I could imagine them well enough.

Warlord, his arms crossed, his face scrunched up by a frown.

Logos, stroking his beard, a sad smile on his lips.

Manifold, impassive, but managing to hold his information-addiction at bay for the time being.

Director Johnson, the only hint of distress at the news in her poise. I wondered if she was sporting the mini-skirt that made her so impressive, despite her fifty years of age. No doubt she was.

"There’s—" Logos started to say before Manifold cut him.

"No," he said.

"There is," Logos said again, more forceful, "always the option of asking Shaman for help."

"No," everybody else repeated.

"He would heal me, sure," I continued, "but he would screw me up. He would twist my brain and everything I believe in. I wouldn’t be the same person. There’s a reason we left him to die on the ISS. And there’s a reason I’m on the potential class 1 threat list."

I didn’t turn my face towards the Director.

"He still isn’t dead," Logos whispered.

"Yeah. And this is why I’m not letting him touch Earth again. He’s mostly powerless, and we can’t count on his so-called ‘code of honor’. We just can’t, he’s far too dangerous."

[Cont.]

"It’s your life," he said.

"Yeah. It is."

I opened my eyes, and squinted to try and look at him. The only friend I had on the team, and he tried to sell me to Shaman of all people?

"Good job on the tidal waves," I said.

He huffed, turned awaty somewhat stiffly, and left my room, and then my quarters. The rest made noises, and they followed suit shortly after.

*

The ocean licked at my toes, and the wind tried to lift the hemline of my checkered sundress. It was three days after Quellen—something, and everybody had mostly left me alone. Other doctors confirmed Manifold’s diagnostic, and I now had to make peace with the fact I would soon cease to be. Visit relatives? Try to get laid one last time? Drink myself in a stupor? Meditate? The headaches plaguing me certainly didn’t help.

My phone buzzed, and I squinted at it to read the message.

<Behemoth reclassified as Black Horse. Tzitzimitl reclassified as White Horse. Kalki reclassified as Red Horse.>

Uh.

Kalki was the Class 1 threat I had helped destroy two weeks after I got my powers. Brazil still bore the marks of the destruction it had left in its wake, nearly ten years after. A hundred and twenty million dead. I still had nightmares about it. Thirteen is too young to learn the smell of burnt human flesh, or that rivers really could run red with blood.

My phone beeped this time. My heart sank.

<Pale Horse identified by the Deep Space Observation Network.>

Fuck.

<ETA: ~140 days.>

Fuck.

Annnnnnd theeere we go.

I hoped you all enjoyed it. I know I did.

Next thread tentatively on Wednesday. Check my Twatter for precisions: https://twitter.com/AlterationQM

I love me some cliffhangers.
>>
>>37313827
So in other word we die now and let Death roll over the world or chance getting healed by shaman? Joy.

Also our powers gave us cancer, Yay!
>>
>>37313874
Well, I have plans for two more threads, and maybe a fifth, that's an awfully long-winded death.

Believe.
>>
>>37313827
Thanks for running, fun thread.
Sorry for starting the prom stuff.
>>
>>37313796
Shieeet.
>>
>>37313827
fuck your cliffhanger damn you

looks like we need to do Shaman if we want to save the earth.
>>
>>37313919
I don't mind.

I mean, she was a full-time celebrity by the time she'd hit the age for prom. Maybe she dreams about that, yeah? "What if I had had a normal life?"

And then she remembers everybody would be dead or worse.
>>
>>37314036
What country is she from?
>>
>>37314061
Some random state in the US, I guess.
>>
>>37314083
>we're from north dakota

nobody lives there, it's perfect.
>>
>>37314112
This is now canon.
>>
>>37314083
And she has no parents or any close family?
>>
>>37314133
Her relatives may appear in the next thread, if you so choose.
>>
>>37314162
Nice.

Thanks for the thread
>>
>>37313827
Thank you based Alt. Now back to lurking HMQ (the other one) and hoping Hex gets a few more updates out.
>>
Hmmm. Red Horse, White Horse, Black Horse, Pale Horse. I like the 4 horsemen theme.
>>
>>37318601
And then the apocalypse follows
