Deciding to dig further as to not make any assumptions. You take apart and try to find more info on the USB your Grandpa gave you. Breaking any hidden encryption and searching any hidden files you come across proved futile as there was nothing useful you could gleam from it. While you did learn the name of some of the genetic donors for the project along with that traits they were going for, that was ultimately pointless information. That leaves you with only two real ways to get more information, call members of your family or try and hack your way through those DARPA servers to get more intel. Hacking would work well, if you were stateside but here you are at the IS Academy in Japan. So that only really leaves calling family.

Best to start from where all this began, Grandpa. Last you heard, he was still on business saving Uncle David from Ocelot. Not sure about the time zone difference, you call on your codec anyway. After a couple of rings, you finally get an answer.

“Big Boss here.” Grandpa says while you hear some struggling in the background.

“Grandpa, I have a question about something I found on that intel USB you gave me.” you ask while trying to ignore the continued struggling noises.

“One second John. I have to make sure Ocelot smiles.” Grandpa says with a touch of humor in his voice.

After a short wait, you receive an image of the codec. A picture of Grandpa with Ocelot in a headlock. I suppose that is one way for too old friends to meet.

“So I take it Uncle David is alright?” you ask.

“Yes, he has already evac'ed. Just had to make sure to tie up this lose end.” Grandpa answers.

“Is that you John? Been a while hasn't it? I see you've been doing pretty well over there.” Ocelot says while struggling in the headlock.

“Hey Ocelot.” you greet him. “Was it your idea to take a selfie like that?” you ask.

“Actually, it was mine. It is suppose to be all the rage with kids your age.” Grandpa answers.

“I see.” you reply, not quite sure how to answer. This whole scene is just a bit too odd for you.

“What was your question John?” Grandpa asks, now with Ocelot struggling a bit less so he could listen in.

“In the intel you gave me, I found something about how Grandma and “Les Enfants Terribles” are connected. I wanted to ask you about it since you seemed to be the right person to ask.” you ask making sure you are clear and resolute in asking.

You really aren't sure of how to go about this. But you are starting to feel tiredness overtake you. Time to make a decision.

Seeing as how the girls are sleeping so peacefully, it would be wrong to attempt to interrupt that. Grabbing some spare blankets from the closet, you set up your impromptu bed in between the two other beds and finally go to sleep.

It was rather annoying that you had to completely crawl out of bed to stop your alarm. The sleep wasn't as restful as you hoped, partly due to how your mind ran around with the implications of what Grandpa said.

“Wake up.” you say softly as you gently shake Charlotte from her slumber.

“John? Why are you here?” Charlotte asks through her sleepiness.

“Remember, you fell asleep after on my bed?” you answer.

“Ah? Oh right, you massaged me last night.” Charlotte answers, now starting to wake up. “It would be nice if you woke me up like this.” Charlotte softly says so that only you could hear her.

You see Charlotte blush at the implication of that while you smile.

“John, you shouldn't be mean to me so early.” Charlotte says with a half-pouting, half teasing voice.

“We better hurry up as we still have class today.” you reply.

Moving on, you start to wake up Cecilia as Charlotte gets out of bed.

“Five more minutes Chelsea.” Cecilia mumbles out.

“You can't do that Cecilia. We still have class today.” you reply softly.

“Class?” Cecilia asks, still mumbling. “AH” Cecilia says as she wakes herself up completely.

Cecilia quickly sits upright on the bed, now fully awake.

“John?” Cecilia asks a bit confused at why you are standing next to her.

“Was the massage that good? You and Charlotte have been completely out of it.” you reply.

“Yes, it was. You should massage me again, when it is just the two of us.” Cecilia says with a very sultry tone in her voice.

Looks like the four of them accept that compromise. At least they aren't angry now. Now with that out of the way,everyone heads back to their rooms. After a quick shower, you put on a clean school uniform and head out to the cafeteria. You were the first one there, so you begin to eat breakfast alone. Houki was the first one to join you for breakfast. Laura joins the two of you a bit afterwords. Charlotte follows shortly with Cecilia being last of the 4 to join you. Being the gentleman you are, you wait til all of them are done before you get up and head to class.

Class goes by without a hitch. And without anyone even knowing what transpired last night. If Ms Orimura ever got wind of what happened, well. It brings memories associated with how Grandpa disciplined you, not good at all. History class ends as lunchtime rolls around. At precisely 5 minutes after the bell rings, you get a call on the codec. You quickly walk out of the classroom to answer the codec.

“NEPHEW, Big Boss asked me to explain some questions you were having on the Next-Generation Special Forces project. I know it is lunch time for you. You should find somewhere where you would not be interrupted as this is sensitive information.” Uncle Eli tells you.

Taking too long to find a somewhere safe would be conspicuous. You decide to hide in an obvious spot, the stairwell with your QPCS. A quick look around to see no one standing at the stairwell, you quickly head behind the stairs. Only to find there were already a bunch of boxes there, perfect. Without anyone seeing you deploy the QPCS over your head and hunker down, becoming an inconspicuous cardboard box.

“It has it's ups and downs. Grandpa seemed to approve when he met them.” you respond.

“Yes, father did decide to take a new approach for you. One that I approve of. Choosing your own path rather than the one given to you. But let's get to the reason why I called, the Genome army.” Uncle Eli replies over the codec.

“Yeah, how does it relate to Laura and the Ubermensch project?” you ask.

“Simply put, the German Ubermensch Genome project was a combination of the Next-Generation Special Forces project and Les Enfants Terribles. As you should know, Big Boss, feels you are not ready to know about Les Enfants Terribles. So I will explain the other projects.” Uncle Eli begins to explain, albeit rather dryly.

“The Next-Generation Special Forces project, also known as the Genome Army, was primarily a genetics experiment used to increase the effectiveness of soldiers. By using a retro-virus as the vector to change the genes in adult males combined with several types of additional training has resulted in a stronger soldier. Short-term testing has proven to be very effective, meanwhile long-term tests are still in progress. The use of the perfect soldier as the genetic donor unified it all.” Uncle Eli explains, still with that dry tone.

“Who was the genetic donor? Isn't there also the problem of genetic similarity leading to a common weakness to certain diseases? “ you ask as certain things start to click.

“The genetic donor is confidential for quite a lot of reasons. But yes, that is one of the long-term testing done. The susceptibility to a common disease due to decreased genetic diversity is a problem we are looking over. A common weakness due to your genes only makes them seem more like a tool.” Uncle Eli answers.

“So where is John? I am sure I saw him walk here. We are suppose to have lunch together.” Cecilia says unaware of your presence.

Good thing you are hiding, you are really paying quite a lot of attention to Uncle Eli to the exclusion of your surroundings. Plus it would be bad to let anyone else listen to this.

“He left class rather quickly. I think he had that phone of his. Must have been family.” Houki answers, also completely unaware you are listening to them.

“Family? Well, this would be a good time to speak to them.” Cecilia replies to Houki.

“John, I hear voices over the codec. Would you like to continue or stop for moment?” Uncle Eli asks, curious to your next choice.

“Actually Uncle, those voices are two of the girls I like. It would be, beneficial to listen in for a moment.” you answer in a hushed voiced only Uncle Eli could hear.

You hear him chuckle a bit.

“Information is key in warfare.” Uncle Eli replies over the codec after his chuckle.

You stay quiet under your QPCS so you can hear Houki and Cecilia talk.

“It is proper to wait until you are both ready for such a decision.” Houki says in that dutiful stubborn tone.

“Why? John and I are quite close, so it would only be natural for me to meet his family.” Cecilia retorts in a proud voice.

“And yet, I am the one with a date with John planned.” Houki replies rather stubbornly.

You easily imagine that Cecilia and Houki are staring each other down as they try to one-up one another.

“That may be true, but John is MY Knight. And he promised me he would escort me at a time of my choosing. Maybe I should have Chelsea send some nice lotions and oils that are wonderful for massaging.” Cecilia retorts rather harshly.

“NNNNNnnnnnn~~” Houki voices, unable to respond.

“While it is not the season for swimwear, maybe I should go shopping for some with him. I'm sure he would love to choose one for me.” Cecilia replies, continuing her attack.

“Now that I think about it, John did win that date for me. He said if he won, we would go on a date. So you can say that he won the tournament for my favor.” Houki explains with a very proud tone.

“NNNnnnnn~~ No fair!” Cecilia replies loudly and rather angrily.

“He isn't here. He must already be at the cafeteria. I'll just go meet him there.” Houki says out loud.

“Hmph.” Cecilia responds, “I'll be the first one to meet him for lunch.”

“I overheard intel on preventing a future cat fight between two of them.” you answer.

“Why not let them fight it out in a jello pool? Then you can wrestle the winner?” Uncle Eli asks with obvious excitement in his voice.

“Because that would result in more than just Houki and Cecilia fighting it out. And I doubt it would stop at just jello wrestling. This is a school for IS. Besides getting expelled for massively inappropriate behavior would not reflect well on any of us.” you respond, shaking your head at such a suggestion.

“Maybe for summer then. Big Boss did mention that several of the girls want to meet us. Would be interesting to see how far they want to go.” Uncle Eli muses.

“Anyway, how does the Genome Army tie into the Ubermensch project?” you ask.

“Their genetic project relied on wholesale genetic engineering as a base while using retro-viral vector to change any nucleotide post conception. Their use of a variety of genetic donors helps avoid the genetic uniformity problem. It has also resulted in less than consistent results. Their project was also in much smaller scale while costing much more. But from the start, those children were nothing but tools.” Uncle Eli answers with what you think is a cross of pity and disgust in his voice.

“So they used the data from the other two projects to advance their RnD and to complete their project?” you ask.

“Yes, they were already choosing which traits to select for before those children were even made. Somehow, the Germans were able to get data on the sort of traits that were selected for the Genome Army. Which made it easier for them to select genes from their donors. And have enough data to complete all the genes required to make a complete human.” Uncle Eli explains.

“All that just to make them. Really makes you wonder who would be able to do that?” you question, taken aback by the how morality and ethically questionable it all is.

“John, there are persons out there that think control and power are more important than anything else in the world. The project started with artificial humans and then modified as necessary to become their version of the perfect soldier. And look how well that worked for them. Tools and not soldiers, parts to a whole that could not adapt like we can. Something to be used, exhausted and then thrown away for some master plan.” Uncle Eli answers rather coldly.

“That means in the end, I will just protect Laura all the more. She didn't ask for that, she deserves a happy life.” you say, steeling yourself over this decision.

“I bet the other girls wouldn't like.” Uncle Eli adds.

“Well, there is one solution to that. Make them all happy. I should be able to do that if I handle things correctly.” you reply with a smile.

“I look forward to that. Follow your own path and surpass your genes. Til next time NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWW.” Uncle Eli replies happily as he ends the codec call.

With the call ended, you look out to see that the coast is clear. You get up and undeploy your QPCS so you can put it back into your inventory. Checking the time, you don't have much time left til class starts again. You instead grab a Caloriemate from your inventory and eat that as you walk back to class. You made your decision, time to walk that path you chose into a future you decided.
