/tg/ - Traditional Games

So your party ends up completing a quest for a baron. He is very pleased with your speed, professionalism and, above all, your discretion, and throws a dinner to reward you for your hard work.

As the dinner ends and the baron retires, bidding your party farewell, one of his retainers approaches and tells you that the baron has one more gift for you, before bidding you follow.

You are led to a basement room to find a young woman (possibly sixteen or eighteen years of age) in chains. As you enter she lowers her eyes so as to not look at you. The retainer tells you that this slave is one last gift to you. She was raised from a family of legal slaves and has never known freedom so shall not attempt to flee your service to a home somewhere, and has basic knowledge of cooking, cleaning and cloth mending, but is trained to be wholly and totally obedient and is a rapid learner, ear-marked by the baron himself at an early age as a potential worker in any field, once given proper instruction. The slave is in a healthy condition with all her teeth, no illnesses, a moderate athletic strength and minimal lashing scars. She has no name barring her unofficial slave name that she has been ordered to forget, and will respond to whatever name or title you deem to give her. And, the retainer adds with a wink, she is still a maiden.

He goes on further to explain that the slave has been instructed to consider herself your property. She is yours to use and apply as you see fit, and it is your right as her owner to marry her off to whomever you wish, as well as to trade or dispose of as property.

Should you not wish to take possession of the slave, the retainer informs you that the baron understands that some from other countries where such things are taboo do not wish such possessions, and as such will not be insulted. She will be taken back by the baron to be found purpose for.

What does your character do with her?

Takes her as part of his household and has her earn her way as a secretary and accountant for the Guild. Frees her if she wants freedom, keeps her as part of his estate if she doesn't or is unsure. Pays her a fair wage for her skills and services provided and cares for her well being as best as he is able. Let's her decide for herself whom she is interested in romantically and likely takes on a patriarchal role in assisting her throughout her life. Probably teaches her some of the more useful things he knows and arranges for her to learn the skills for a successful independent life should the party meet an untimely end.

Why?

She neither has exceptional beauty or something exceptionally rare and unique (such as a slave in the Roman markets having platinum blonde hair) nor is she trained in any of the erotic arts.

Sex slaves exist, but they were a hell of a lot more valuable than "oh she's just some chick with a hymen."

The laws of men are weak and frail, only the commandments of God move me. The word of God the angels has proclaimed slavery to be abominable, therefore she is freed and the Baron has secured his place in damnation. Law has no weight on my soul, I act with God's grace. I gently remind the Baron of his sin and offer prayers on his behalf. Absolutely nothing.

The only time you'd want a fresh-caught slave is if you're the one that actually caught 'em, or you're training them to be sold at the market.

Having a "blank slate" slave is disgraceful and a waste of time, money and effort on the part of the slave owner.

Actually now that I think about it you could always try to find out how fertile she is. She might not be particularly good-looking or naturally strong, but she isn't scrawny or dumb either; we could always use her to pleasure the hard-working male slaves and possibly carry their children.

It seems she hasn't been TOO badly mistreated, especially as far as slavery goes, and apparently she's a quick learner. And our party IS in need of an extra skillmonkey/hireling.

It shouldn't take too long to get her re-adjusted to normal social dynamics, and to teach her how to mend armor and weapons. And since I already hunt for the party, produce water/food where it's needed, and cast many of our defensive spells and effects, a few paces behind me is probably the safest and most secure place for her to be in the world.

Some years ago there's been a story of Anon travelling to remote region of South America for a year (he was a wildlife biologist doing thesis or something). He was renting a room from locals (natives) and upon some haggling got their daughter (in early teens) along with the deal. His pocket money was more than those people earn in lifetime and marriages for profit are common, so getting the that kinda deal for a one year "lease" as no brainer. He managed to teach her all the stuff to "be perfect companion" over the course of couple months and just enjoy the rest. So it's probably not all that much hassle.

Maybe slaves existing specifically for sex owned by important people. Nothing stopping a man wealthy enough to own slaves but not wealthy enough to buy beautiful slaves for the express purpose of sex from banging some girl who works in the kitchen or anything.

Plus it isn't like pink hair is a common trait, I would say that pink hair is probably less common than platinum blonde hair.

Interesting. I turn her into a weapon of justice and goodness, and find a way to make her immortal.

See, property can't be tempted. She doesn't see herself as a person, so she can't be corrupted by personal desire. She could be an extremely useful tool for the forces of good, even if she doesn't understand how or why.

Take her. She'll be our new maid at whatever building our adventuring party was planning to buy to act as our home base. Keeping things clean, preparing food, washing clothes, tending to the garden, etc.

She'll be given a proper name and occasional pay so she can buy something nice for herself every once in awhile.

After a few more adventures, possibly after earning at title or such from the local king/duke (and realizing I might want to settle down and start raising little adventurer kids), I'll free her and marry her.

Many years later, she'll be teaching our 15-year old aspiring adventurer daughter how to cook while I sit back and tease her about how she has a crush on that strapping young prince/son of the duke.

It's the ordinary things in life that are nice.

The Order of the Almond is a wealthy, influential, urbane, and utterly evil order of chivalry. Devoted servants acquired by dubious means serve them almonds from gilded baskets day and night. Their most prized possession is a magic rod that blossoms and bears sweet curative almonds on one side and deadly bitter almonds on the other, with no obvious way to tell them apart by sight. Only the brave or the ignorant accept invitations to their feasts.
>>
First things first. We don't recognise her as a slave. Our ranger has some strong feelings against slavery and would likely strike out against any of us if we treated her like a slave.
However only the Sorceress and Assassin come from societies where slavery past indentured servitude of criminals is a done thing and as a side effect the rest wouldn't even treat her as a slave to start with.

As it stands the Sorceress and Necromancer are going to be treating her like a giant Barbie. She's going to be perpetually dressed to the nines in all the finery they can get their hands on.
The Assassin and Duellist will be doting on her like a younger sister. Both can't return home and miss their own younger sisters. She'd be, essentially, a replacement sister for them.
The Ranger will be as aloof to her and she is to everyone else. Despite her feelings against slavery, she wouldn't actually have any kind of emotional attachment to her.
And my Cleric has found her apprentice.
Even if our newest member doesn't take to theology, Sofia is a skilled mathematician, accountant, historian, linguist and scribe. She'll revel in being a teacher and will attempt to pass on all she knows.

The Baron's story doesn't add up. if she's so obedient and not likely to run away, why is she chained to a wall? In a world with cheap cure spells, why is she scarred at all?

I accept the baron's gift, then at the first opportunity have a mage or priest cast a spell that gets her to remember who she really is. She's probably the Emperor's illegitimate daughter who the Baron was ordered to get rid of or something. If she's not the next plot hook, I shake my head dissapointedly at the GM and treat her as the window-dressing that she is.

>>37292501
You pay other people to break in your slaves? As in, you don't have enough preferences that you'd rather do that yourself?
Putting aside how weird it is to have the basic ingredients and want someone else to Pygmalion for you, do you realize how many qualified people would do that for free? If you wouldn't enjoy that, a vow of celibacy is probably more appropriate for your character.

Also, we may want to get her some decent armor since things on the ship and in port aren't always the safest, along with getting her a proper name and identity.
>>
>>37300057
It turns out that, while a slight scandal, the existence of the bastard daughter is hardly realm shattering, and even, to many, unsurprising.

Ironically, the worst part of the scandal is how a freeborn was made into a slave without due process. But legal opinion establishes that the emperor's will is not to be defied, and that as the order to turn her into a slave was approved by him, it is legally valid.

You're left with the slave. It is apparent that she won't object to not being called by her proper titles, even though strictly it is required.

Take a raw, unbleached almond.
Soak it in water for 12+ hours.
Dry in a food dehydrator at it's lowest setting for another 12+ hours.
Enjoy your activated almond.

The soaking triggers the beginning of sprouting, converting some of the starch into simpler sugars.
They taste almost identical to normal bleached, roasted almonds with absolutely no know health benefits over normal almonds.

But anyone who drinks Alkaline Water intentionally isn't willing to let facts stand against his diet choices.

Same thing my party does with every valuable thing that can't be separated into parts, we divide her up evenly and give a fair portion to each party member based on the value of the parts. Why do we do this? Because our party leader is a fucking moron and wouldn't be listening to anything other than "this is yours now". He wouldn't even hear that its a human life. He would just divide the bitch up. And we would be powerless to stop him, not just because of the charter we laid down, but because we all had such a poor understanding of the system at the time of creation we made fucking terrible characters. Except for him, he's a monster who would tear us all apart with little to no difficulty. So he says divide the chick, we turn away and pretend he isn't butchering another human to distribute among us and be carried around. Also most of the party wouldn't be listening either. My character quickly says she'll take her before anyone else in the party can object. She shoots a "Shut the fuck up" glare at the party medic, who belatedly realizes that taking the slave and freeing her is preferable to objecting to the gift and leaving her in slavery.

The party tells her she can live a free woman and goes to reasonable lengths to find a place for her. After all, being free doesn't mean much if she starves to death penniless and they don't exactly have the time and money to run a charity for rescued slaves.

She can understand the concept of freedom without having had it.

It's the same thing as me understanding the concept of a menstrual cycle without having one. I can break it down to things I either can relate to or understand academically. I don't have ovaries, but I've had cramps of other kinds before and assume it feels similar but in a different place, for instance. I know, in an academic sense, what the bleeding is and so on.

Same thing. She's not free and never has been but she works for people who, presumably, are free. She might not be good at it, might fall into old habits without guidance, but it's not like you'd have to sit down and explain that there is a concept called freedom and some people don't have to serve others. She might not be USED to the concept of her labor having value, but she wouldn't be like, confused or surprised if you told her that she could get paid for doing work in other contexts.

Setting her free is probably the worst option. If you are evil, well you gain nothing. If you are good, she will probably not survive out there and end up as a slave again.

If you are Good, the best thing to do is take her,t hen train her. People suggested cleric or monk. Or, at least, find a good place for her, where she wouldn't be abused.

I then slowly but surely introduce her to the possibility of me being autistic and actually having been brought up very restrictive and chastised and thus have really big issues I try to solve on my own as I show and teach her the world as good as I am able to until she finds her own roof over their heads.

Takes her and gradually integrates her as a free member of the party, giving her time to get used to the concept. Probably he'd want to teach her a trade, but his non-killing trade is singing and some play of instruments. Not a secure profession, but eh.

Shit, man, thralls are good stuff. Having to clean and cook your own food, patch your own clothes, set up your own camp sucks. Only right that a great warrior such as I have a thrall to do it for me.

As my possession, naturally anyone who disrespects her is disrespecting me by proxy, and has an urgent meeting with my sword in their near future.
>>
>>37291725
Take her, train her, free her, make her seneschal of the party stronghold or similar post of low-to-moderate risk and moderate-to-high responsibility. That ought to resolve everything neatly.

Funny that in a good/neutral territory, slavery is permitted to be generational and not simply a means of debt repayment, or the like. I think we have a side-quest!

In order of last played
>LE Bard accepts slave, teaches her to be a cultist and/or keeps her, reasonably decent master and so on, then eventually sacrifices her for power.
>LG necromancer accepts her, beings to gently open her up to the world over time, she probably ends up teaching as the wizard school
>LN Inquisitor of Asmodeus is totes down for having a slave, the rest of the group probably tries to teach her to be free behind his back but he'd be such a decent master that its unlikely to happen. Probably ends up marrying her off to someone/doing something to make her happy after a few years of service and for personal benefits.

Accept the slave.

Free the slave after leaving this barony (which we will do immediately, of course,) and offer to teach her rudimentary skills, knowledge, whatever I can. If she accepts, take her on in a quasi-squire/valet capacity, where I'll try to show her everything I've learned of this world, both its beauty and its many dangers.

Once she feels comfortable (or immediately by her election,) I will either escort her to a homeland if such a place exists, take her to some other place of safety at her discretion (though the nearest temple would be very easy to arrange,) or, if she feels independent enough, simply give her some equipment, money, and at least one weapon to aid her on her travels wherever she may wish to go.

In the future, I will be more reluctant to deal with this baron, as I find his practices distasteful and unjust. He is fortunate that much greater horror exists in this world than that which he perpetrates. If that should change, know that his depraved reign will end, OP of Fagsburgh.

Yes, yes we do.
For three very good reasons.
We did technically earn her, we wouldn't throw away earned loot.
Having her settle down in a normal life means she leaves the picture and that's just a boring end to any character arc or moral arc, in fact its washing our hands of her in a way.

To clarify, she falls in love, but she only confesses a desire to settle down and serve as a slave, right?

I reassure her that she may stay with me as long as she needs to, for by now we will surely have done much Good for many people, and will continue to do Good as long as we are able. Her desire to serve is admirable; I simply want to teach her that there are higher ideals to serve, and that I am merely a man, unworthy of one's full devotion, for such single-minded devotion leaves no room for Justice and Compassion for All who live.

One may, and one should care for others, but to care only for one to the exclusion of All else is to neglect the wide world and its people. I care for her a great deal, and wish for her to be happy, but I do not believe such an absolute servitude to another is just.

Take them on picnics and to festivals, help them to get a job with a nice employer, help them to find a normal relationship or go all rescue romance if you feel like it. You don't need to turn them into a dragonkiller to have an interesting or fulfilling narrative.

>I guess it all depends how hard her life has been up until that point.
Examples of what kind of life would lead to what kind of outcome?
>>
>>37307544
Anything that's worse than being rescued from a terrible life by your childhood friend, who you might have had a crush on, only to have their kindness turn on you as they make your life a miserable for slights that you might not have even intended. It's about being rescued, only to have your supposed salvation turn out to be just as bad.

She's already a slave, so something must have been very wrong in her life. Maybe she's already been raped or brutalized by a former master, so she's more responsive to someone that's less of an asshole, especially someone she already has expectations of and feelings for.

The thing that I really like in this scenario is the warped sense of a former friendship turned upside down. They could have had a perfectly normal relationship and instead they've got a master/slave scenario, but with all their old feelings mixed in. There's a lot of emotional turmoil there.
>>
>>37307740
I like the already brutalized idea, where even though you mistreat her, she loves you for it and it reinforced her existing feelings for you.
>>
>>37307740
At any rate, the important question for the slave in this situation is 'why is this person doing this?'. It's entirely possible they could rationalize out a scenario in which they deserve the abuse, or one where they overlook it because they believe they can change their captors mind.

It's just basic stockholm syndrome shit, but I really like it in this context, because you can contrast the sweetness that should be with the bitterness that actually is there.

What.

Well, anyhow, my current character is an orc fighter living out beyond the fringes of civilization. So I guess this baron was a border prince or some shit. He's already got a slave, but one more wouldn't hurt. She needs to learn to hunt and learn a trade acceptably if she's going to be useful out in the wastes. Maybe slave 1 can teacher some ritual magic or something.

It's very possible that she'll be returning with my character and seeing her former master put to the sword when the party gets big and tuff enough to start raiding border outposts.
