You tell him that that you’re going to explore the nearby ruins.

“I cannot advise this. I would ask that you reconsider such an action. Our people do not enter these places, and do not like to discuss their existence to others. Those are places of the past, and shouldn’t be disturbed.”

“We’ll be careful,” you assure them.

He looks over you and your friends with a mix of worry, concern, and suspicion. “See that you are.” He leaves.

A few of the people in the caravan see you off. Some thank you for the help, others offer backhanded compliments, while a few keep trying to sell you their wares.

You head off. Shan-Li is the last person you see over the dune before you’re out of sight.

The desert is hot. Really, really hot. Getting sunscreen, hats, and extra water was the best idea ever. You just hope it was enough. The sandy trail gives way to sandy dunes that give way under your feet, making each step much more difficult and draining.

Vance asks the question you were thinking. “Isn’t this desert a bit out of place? The rest of the region isn’t like this.”

Clair closes her eyes and sighs. “You don’t know why that is? Have you been building so much muscle that no nutrients are getting to your brain?”

Jeanine glares at her. “And none of your nutrients ever went anywhere else!” She gestures to Clair’s relatively undeveloped form. Robin slinks behind you.

Robin takes over. “Sandorp is ancient. Back long ago, Sandorp was the center of trade and civilization in the region. Unfortunately that meant they had a lot of enemies. One of them sieged the city for over a decade.”

Clair jumps in. “But Sandorp wouldn’t fall!”

Robin tries to continue. “So the inv-”

Clair interrupts harder. “So the invaders used Pokemon with Sandstorm to wear them out! They never took the city but permanently changed the weather and landscape! ” She rushes that out. Clair smugly looks to Robin.

Robin and Clair keep trying to one-up each other on on increasingly obscure historical trivia about the area. Clair says the people here were about harmonious living between people and Pokemon. Robin counters with something else.

You walk between them and put your hands around their shoulders. “Thanks guys. That was very illuminating.” They stop and look at you. “I had no idea what gigantic nerds you are.”

That seems to have taken the gas out of it for now. They slow down and get some more water.

You’ve been noticing Robin absentmindedly touching the spot she was bite a few times now. You can’t help but feel she’s a little slower and less energetic than usual too. Hopefully it’s just the heat. She said she was fine, right?

You arrive at the spot marked on your map, but don’t see anything.

“There’s nothing here,” Vance flops onto the sand. Even though you have plenty of rations, just being out in the pounding sun is pretty draining. The heat is getting to everyone.

Robin checks the map. “It has to be here. This is the spot.”

Clair puts her hands behind her head. “Maybe you’re just not at good at maps as you think.” Again? Seriously?

Jeanine searches around. “Shut up Clair. Robin’s smarter than you and everyone is sick of you pretending otherwise.”

Clair puts her arms down. “First off, no. I’m an actual genius. Second, I don’t have to take that from an aura reader. That’s not even a thing. That’s just something people who wish they were psychic try to compensate with. It’s like, psychic-lite.”

Jeanine keeps searching around. “Let’s search. Maybe we can dig?”

You let out Vlad and Destiny. “Vlad, take a look overhead and see what you can find.”

Vlad scouts around and leads you over about 50 feet. Huh. Now that you look at these dunes, they do seem a bit off.

“Destiny, we need a Rain Dance!”

Destiny quickly gets to work and starts a light drizzle. Everyone seems really happy about that.

You get on your knees and help Jeanine dig around. The wet sound clumps. It’s heavier, but at least it doesn’t just shift back into place.

Ow! Your hand! You hit something. Everyone comes over to check it out and help clear it.

“What is that?” It’s like a flower made of crystal.

Jeanine brightens up. “Ha! I know what this is! It’s a time flower?”

“A what?”

Jeanine sits cross legged beside it. “I never thought I’d get to try this!” She closes her eyes, takes a breath, and focuses.

After a short period, a transparent group of figures appear. Team Imperium! And Professor Hornbeam is with them! You flinch and reach for your Pokeballs on reflex.
Jeanine is smiling, her eyes wide with wonder. “It’s okay. This is something that already happened.”

“What about our people in there?” A grunt angrily yells at Hornbeam.

“They’re already dead. We have what we came for. Bury the entrance and let’s go.”

The grunt looks back, hesitating. “Can I at least know what they died for?” There’s a harsh, barely contained edge to his voice. “For my report. Sir.” He grits his teeth.

He pats his briefcase and smiles. “These stones alone were worth it. The DNA samples we found were just an unexpected bonus. I’m sure your report will reflect these events as a net positive.”

The grunt grabs Hornbeam by his collar and slaps his glasses off. “Worth it? I knew those people!”

Hornbeam sighs. “This isn’t something you’re going to let go, is it?” He signals the other grunts and they advance on the dissenter. “Everyone else has the sense to see where the future of this organization is going. Why couldn’t you?”

“No. No! Stay back!”

The figures fade. Everyone sits in silence for a few minutes.

Jeanine looks at her hands, then the flower. “I don’t know. It couldn’t have been too long.”

“Come on guys. We have to go in now.”

Vance crosses his arms. “Damn right!” Everyone nods in agreement and follows your lead. Digging takes awhile, but with everyone and their Pokemon pitching in, you find open an entrance.

You head inside. After about 20 feet in, you’re stopped by a large door. There are 4 sections with 3 symbols each.

Robin gazes at them with you. “I think these are all the types of Pokemon.”

“Obviously, but why?” Clair squints. “It’s some sort of puzzle. I think we’re supposed to do them in order.”

Vance puts his hand on one. Clair stops him before he pushes it in.

“Don’t just push them without thinking!” Clair scolds. “What if it’s trapped? What if the walls close in or there’s a Sphere of Annihilation or something?”

Robin looks up at Clair, excited. “I-I didn’t want to be the first one to make a reference! How do you even know what that is?”

Clair shrugs. “Why not? I can have hobbies.”

Vance. “We’ll be fine. I don’t annihilation spheres-”

“Sphere of Annihilation!” Clair and Robin correct at the same time.

“Whatever. I’m saying this door probably doesn’t even work anyway. It’s old. Maybe we can force our way in.”

“Just be on the lookout for kobolds,” Jeanine jokes as she runs her fingers along the seams.

Vance mutters to you under his breath. “What the hell are they talking about?”

You shrug. You've never heard of that Pokemon.

You let Clair and Robin step up and help you. You look over it and quickly feel you have the right answer.

Clair and Robin debate over the right way.

"Look, it's clear that were supposed to just pick the super effective one's in order, right?"

Robin looks unsure. "Doesn't that seem a little too obvious to you though?"

"Hmm," They inspect it together.

They start throwing around increasingly complicated symbolism. Robin mentions their first settlements on the coast. Clair insists that instead of super-effective typing, it's actually a story told in icons. Robin follows along, citing ancient myths and legends and trying to connect them to each symbol.

You can't even pretend to keep up with the crazy leaps they're making. You press the top left, top right, bottom left, then bottom right.

Everyone jumps back, expecting something terrible to happen. The rock door grinds opens.

Robin laughs in relief. Clair folds her arms. "I knew that."

There’s very little lighting. The air smells musty, and there are footprints and displaced dust.

Robin takes out her Vulpix and has it light a torch from a wall. Vance takes the torch. “What do you think they were searching for?”

Nobody has an answer

The lighting is still very poor. Your team advances slowly, sometimes tripping on small rocks.

“Ugh, we need something more if we’re going to explore this place. We can barely see.” Clair has a little fear in her voice

The light flickers off Robin’s scared face. “W-we could get lost easily. We need a plan.”

You wish you bought more Escape Rope. It would come in handy about now.

You let out Vlad, Trunks, and Raistlin.

"Vlad, you're in front. Give us a heads up if you notice anything with echolocation."

Vlad narrowly avoids crashing into the ceiling when he does his usual loop. He flies off.

"Trunks. Use Will-O-Wisp to light the way ahead. Aim it so it hits the right wall every time."

Robin lights up. "Good thinking! We can follow the marks back!"

"Raistlin. Follow me and try to memorize the way out." Raistlin nods. He shows his new spoon light a thumbs up.

With that out of the way, your party is able to move forward. You come across a room with shifting platforms. The platforms seem to be working by a series of stone gears. There’s no indication of what’s keeping them moving. A reasonably agile person could cross it, but there’s still a small chance they could slip or miss.

It’s too dark to see what’s down there if you fall. You’re not even sure how deep it is.

Clair throws up her arms. “How does this even work! What’s powering it?”

“I guess there are some things in life you can’t solve with your narrow outlook. I could teach you some of the basics of aura reading, if you can learn a little patience.”

Clair grumbles. “Just because I haven’t figured it out yet doesn’t mean I’m joining the feel-good hippy brigade!”

Even Robin butts in. “Do you ever stop fighting? This is serious.”

Even you’re feeling a little on edge. Is it just claustrophobia, or is there something else going on? It’s cool in here, so you can’t blame the heat.

"I've got this," Vlad says proudly as he prepares to make the run.

You have Vlad fly over to the other side to check it out. You don't see him as he gets farther into the darkness. He comes back quickly though.

"Did you find anything we should worry about?"

He gives you a strange face. He found something weird, but not dangerous.

Hmmm. "Raistlin! Teleport to the other side!"

Raistlin vanishes. After a few seconds, he comes back. "Anything?"

Raistlin puts an image in your mind. "There's a soft floor on the other side," you tell the others. "I don't get it."

Vance runs passed you. "All this waiting when we could just find out!" He leaps to the first platform. He lands directly on the edge with his knees bent to make another huge leap.

Instead, the platform launches him. It's a springboard!

Vance sails through the air. He wasn't expecting that, so his arms and legs flail wildly as he's tossed off course.

As soon as he reaches the apex of his flight, you realize he's not going to make it!

You have to act fast. Who knows what's at the bottom?

"Levi! Go!" You toss the ball as fast as you can without losing accuracy. Your mighty Gyarados appears in a brilliant flash of light. It illuminates the open area for a brief moment.

Levi grabs Vance in her mouth. Together they're just shy of making it. Levi and Vance fall into the darkness.

"Vance!" Jeanine nearly knocks you over.

"Bounce! Now!"

Vroosh! Levi ascends with Vance screaming as he's dragged by his pants. You heard a sliding stop on the other side.

"I'm alright!" You hear the shout. "Levi too. That was umm, scary."

There's a huge sigh of relief.

"Vance you idiot!" Clair yells into the darkness. "Are you insane!"

Now you just have to get everyone else across.

You call Leviathan back. She leaps back over, much easier this time. She still lands roughly though. She skids to a halt and roars in triump.

Robin looks up at Levi, terrified.

"Did you have another idea?"

She gulps. "I was thinking that maybe with Ditto, Joltik, and Bulbasaur we could make a series of webs and have them use their vines to assist the person across."

That sounds time consuming. "It's not so bad. Watch, Jeanine will go first, right Jeanine?"

Jeanine nods. "Sure, why not?"

You have Levi take Jeanine over. She's surprisingly gentle with her. They leap off into the darkness.

"Waah!" Vance yells as you hear the crash. "Why didn't anyone warn me?"

Clair laughs. "Hurry, send me over. Don't say anything though."

You have Levi take her over. Again, another crash and a screaming Vance. "Missed me this time. Nice try!"

Robin still looks apprehensive. "I-I I don't know. She's nicer now, but in her mouth?"

Levi returns.

"I'll leap across. Watch me do it, and if that looks more appealing, you can try."

Robin nods. She's been through a lot and having to face her Gyarados phobia so directly is probably stressing her out.

You take the leap. Just as you wanted to, you hit the launch pad and sail through the air. You're able to come to a rolling stop on the soft padding on the other side, but it's not superbly graceful or anything.

Robin yells from across the gap. "I don't know. I can't. Maybe I should stay here."

A colossal mountain of muscle with dark spiky hair. Vance has bulging muscles on top of his other bulging muscles. Although he's your age, he typically looks older thanks to his size and defined features. He dresses in loose thin clothing suitable for fighting and moving around quickly.

Jeanine:
She's a tall, busty, athletic blonde. Jeanine usually wears her hair in a ponytail. With her mature body and confidence, she could probably pass for older if she tried.

Clair:
Frail, pasty, slender and small. She has long dark hair, a sharp nose and brown eyes.

"What if you get webbed to Levi, then she takes you across?" You shout over the water.

There's a pause.

"...I don't know." She says back. You let Trunks back out and he marks the wall with another Will-O-Wisp.

"I'm coming back. We can go together, okay?" You head back over using Levi. Besides the head rush, it's not so bad. You noticed she let you dip pretty low. She seems to be having fun with this at least.

You arrive by Robin. "Now, let's get you all tied up and helpless," You smirk.

Robin gulps and blushes. You press her against Levi's side, and have Joltik web her on tightly. "I promise you'll be fine," you assure her as you give her a quick kiss.

You walk in front of Levi, give her a nod, and she lifts you by the back of your shirt.

Off you go! This is pretty exciting! Your hair whips you in the face and you feel alive!

Except this time as you approach the other side, you start to dip, fast.

No no no! You're not going to make it! You start falling into the darkness. You hear Robin screaming as you both plunge. With Levi's tight grip, you can't maneuver to get to your other Pokeballs. You feel the fall in your stomach as adrenaline rushes though you.

Sploosh! You fall into water, still being held by Levi. She finally lets you go and rolls onto her side so Robin isn't being dunked.

She laughs. At least, it's her equivalent of a laugh. She must have noticed there was water down here! She did that in purpose! There's a wickedness to her laugh that's a little unsettling, but that just might be her voice. It's hard to tell if she's being a big jerk out of spite, thinks it's harmless fun, or something else.

Robin hasn't even reacted yet. She looks like she just saw her laugh flash before her eyes.

You yell up to the others so they know you're alright.

You swim to Robin. She looks down at you. Her eyes are as wide as dinner plates.

"Did she do it on purpose?"

You nod. You can't help but laugh a little. Then a lot along with Leviathan.

"You two are the worst!" Robin yells.

You do your best to try to choke down the laugh, but it's hard. "She's right Levi. You *snort* shouldn't do that. There's a fine line between what's appropriate with me, and with others." By the time you get to get to the end, you're able to reign it in and give her a serious look.

Levi eventually averts her gaze. Good. You know to always keep eye contact with a Gyarados and let them look away first.

"Come on Levi, take us back up."

Levi gently grabs a hold of you and Bounces up. She's able to bring you both to where your friends are waiting.

Jeanine leans against Vance and smirks. "You two are out of sight for a few seconds and come back wet. Typical." She presents a fist and Vance pounds it without looking. There's something a little less friendly about that jab than most. She has a mean tone to it.

You help Robin down, removing the webs as best you can.

Robin looks a little peeved. She storms ahead to the next door and stumbles a bit thanks to some sticky webbing on her shoe. That just makes her more angry. Everyone follows after her. You put Levi away.

There’s a closed door with a Pokemon’s face carved into it in intricate detail. You examine it up and down.

Everyone starts arguing again. You're feeling the frustration build up even more.

Even your Pokemon are giving each other nasty glares. Vlad is almost scorched by a Will-O-Wisp from Trunks that got a little too close. Jeanine Ignis, her Charmander out. It slaps it's tail angrily.

You take out your flute and play. Everyone continues to shout over each other, but the Pokemon begin to calm down.

The shouting just gets louder, drowning out your flute. You decide to play it as loud and hard as you can.

"Will you stop that!" Clair stomps over and slaps the flute out of your hands.

Robin grabs her arm and yells in her face. "Don't touch her!"

"Why not? I know her better than you anyway!"

As the flute is knocked from your grip, the sudden surprise makes you play a very off note.

You hear a shifting of rocks in the wall next to you. There's a hidden door there.

Everyone stops fighting and looks. You play that note again. It slides open even more. You play the note in a few variations and find a little quick tune that makes it open entirely.

You peer down the dark hallway. It seems to go down quite a while before you can't see anything.

The group has calmed down now. Nobody wants to make eye contact and the silence is deafening.

You hear a tapping coming from down the dark hallway. It sounds muffled and faint.

"Eat slow," Vance says. "I know you're hungry, but you'll throw up if you don't pace yourself." Vance still looks very suspicious, but as long as you're offering help he's going along with it.

"Wait, do you have any medicine? For my Tropious." He takes out a Pokeball. "We wouldn't have made it without her."

It looks like a dinosaur with leaf wings. It's in terrible shape. You hand him a potion and he applies it immediately. "She grows fruit, but without sunlight..." He hugs her "Thank you so much Tropious. I'm sorry for pushing you so hard." After that he finally joins the others and eats.

They all look so relieved. The girl in the back is the only one able to keep tears back.

"I'm sorry. You were all abandoned." You explain everything in detail.

The girl, Zoe, crushes her empty bottle. "I knew that bastard scientist wasn't any good. Why does he have so much power?"

The tension your team had is mostly faded. These people and their Pokemon seem way too weak to be a threat. Hopefully.

You resist the urge to shrug it off. "So what were you here for? Whatever it was seems to have unsettled the local Pokemon."

"We weren't really told much. Hornbeam was directing the whole thing. He said it was the bosses orders, but I don't think that was true." Quinn drinks more water. "I know he was after some sort of rock or stone." You reach the top. "It was passed that door," he points to the intricate one you are your friends argued in front of.

"As for unsettling the local Pokemon, I'm guessing that was caused by us triggering the security system in this place. I'm sure they'll be back now that you guys defeated that guardian Pokemon. How did you manage that anyway? We had to use most of our team just to keep it busy and it was still wiping the floor with us. I'm just glad it forgot about us when we fell into the trap."
