RULES AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/SeV4Mmqv

You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

"So run this by me again." You say, your eye twitching at what you believed you were being asked to do.

"Yeah... I don't think I quite heard what you said just now." Lara frowns. "You want us to do WHAT?"

You were currently sitting in the pilot briefing room of the Osean carrier OFS Raven, currently steaming its way to Kasna. Apparently, word (and footage) of Kasna's use of Nimbus burst missiles made its way to the public, which caused quite a bit of uproar. Before, most of the major powers weren't too concerned with what they saw as a small regional conflict, with almost zero chance of spreading to their shores. However, now that it was revealed that Kasna had strategic level weaponry, now EVERYBODY was going crazy. Yuktobania and Osea were of course in an uproar, and even the ISAF was showing some concern.

Repeated requests for Kasna to come clean with and dismantle its missile program were ignored or rather rudely rejected, prompting an international task force to be assembled to "encourage" Kasna to "reconsider". It was straight up intimidation, but as one famous guy said long ago, diplomacy often involved something about speaking softly and big sticks. Mostly big sticks.

However, Kasna was still being stubborn, and the guys in charge decided that the only way to eliminate the threat of Kasna's missiles was to destroy them by force, which is where your squadron came in.

"Okay, I'm going to say this only one more time." Samantha sighs. "You'll be participating in a feint attack on the Kasnan coast to make them think we're staging an amphibious landing. We're hoping at that point, they'll decide to launch their Nimbus missiles so our spy and surveillance assets can determine their launch site. Once the location is confirmed, Yuktobanian stealth bombers will go in and take it out."

"So.... we're essentially being asked to be bait." You conclude.

"Not quite. You're being PAID to b bait." Samantha reminds you. "But don't worry. Now that we know what to expect, Loki can give you advance warning of the incoming missiles."

"I dunno, I don't like this plan. At all." Lara looked uncharacteristically uneasy.

"Well, that's what it is." Samantha says grimly. "Of course, you'll be supported by Yuke and Osean air assets, but they'll mostly be held back for the final strike. You, Alpha, Delta, and some other merc flights will be handling the actual feint operation."

It seems really silly to send elite units like us to trigger Nimbus, especially since we're supposed to be reassured that we'll be supported by assets that are being "held back".

Whoever dreamed up this plan deserves to fly the damn feint themselves, in all honesty.

Sadly, we'll probably do it simply because we're just that straightforward of a pilot.

Yeah thats fucking retarded.

>>37274533
We're Mercs. We're expendable.

That said, if Kasna has the Nimbus, and they're locked in a fairly stagnant conflict with Biafra, wouldn't that imply that Biala has some comparable weapon?

Especially since Kasper's superweapon is only coming to light after being used on an unaffiliated, non-Baker target, there's probably some kind of mutually assured destruction going on there. "You don't Nimbus us, we don't Stonehenge you"
>>
>>37274582
You send in the mercs that are available on short notice. In other words, the ones that were already there. That's the great thing about mercs. They're there when you need them and they're perfectly expendable.

Oh, I know we are. Danger and stupidity are our mottos.

The problem I have is that this is not a good plan at all, and I'm concerned that our bosses actually gave the green light for us to do this sort of mission unless there's been a MAJOR financial concession/payment and some "edge" that we are being given to help us out here beyond some air assets to the rear.

Quick question:
1) how many missions have we flown?
2) how close to the elite top-end is our aircraft?
3) what kind of prestige do we have?

We have some good #3, but until the world starts seeing more of #1 and better #2, we're still just mediocre mercs in the eyes of the government.
>>
>>37274684
You seem to have a bit of a misconception. Mercs are being used more for two reasons.

1. Military cutbacks. Most nations are converting to peacetime budgets, which means cutting military, which means a much smaller standing army. This in turn makes what few troops you still have much more valuable. Mercs are a good way to quickly boost your numbers, as well as absorb losses.

2. Public opinion. Nobody gives a shit if mercs get killed, because to the average joe, they're just guys fighting for literal blood money while actual soldiers are fighting for their country. Governments also have a measure of plausible deniability for particularly sensitive missions that take place in or near foreign nations.
>>
>>37274721
I'm just listing off stuff. Besides it's a lot more likely that the other side would have a special cruise missile of their own than an asteroid destroying mega weapon.

"It IS a rather risky plan..." Lilian says.

"Crystal." All four of you gulp.

"Good, now get ready to launch." Samantha sighs. "Landing operations will begin in an hour."

As everybody files out of the briefing room, you see Lara still in a bit of a down mood. You remember that she had fought in the Emmerian-Estovakian war, which was the conflict where Nimbus missiles were first used. Probably some bad memories there.

Well a trinity missile would be a bit more subtle to deploy, and be better at destroying ground targets than a nimbus would.

Nimbus needs the drones, or an extensive sensor suit that a single plane cannot provide, where as the trinity can be carried and launched from a fighter.

Nimbus would definitly win in the AA department

I think something that people are ignoring is the fact that a feint has to be believable in order for it to work.
How stupid does a military commander have to be to think that a bunch of rookies and second-stringer mercs would be running air support for an amphibious landing of a large multi-national task force?
Especially when that task force has much better air assets, and given the political climate, losses of soldiers would have a tremendous impact back home for the task force commanders.

You give them too much credit, especially since they don't have magical radar that immediately tells them exactly what skill level of fighters are in the air before they have to commit air assets and defenses.

All they initially see is "OMG, stuff is coming?!?! WHAT DO?"
>>
>>37275247
I would ready the missile and send a couple recon units to check to see if it's really an amphibious landing. If they're really rookies and second-stringers, then why waste the very expensive and limited missiles that the entire world is ready to jump down my throat for, when I can use a bunch of my conventional forces that are good enough with their modern airframes.
>>

And this is why the plan (as explained) is poorly thought out.

There is no amphibious landing coming.

We're just to somehow make them THINK one is coming, so stealth bombers can bomb them to hell once spies and surveilance figure out where the launch sites are.

Assuming the launch sites aren't mobile, which (if they were smart) they would be.

>>37275363
>We're just to somehow make them THINK one is coming
We're supposed to make them think that one is coming by dangling ace pilots in their faces. Ace pilots which had already shot down some of their pilots, and would logically be the vanguard of an amphibious landing because the lives of actual soldiers is worth buying the best air cover on the market.

"Doesn't look old from the way you're acting." You grunt. "I haven't had a good experience with burst missiles either, so we at least have that in common."

"Heh, I guess you're right." Lara gives a hollow laugh.

"What happened?" You ask.

"I was there when it first started." Lara sighed. "I was one of the first birds in the air when the Stovies attacked Gracemeria. We were doing pretty well. Looked like were gonna drive them back, until everything just started FUCKING EXPLODING. I was lucky enough to get out of there, but my wingman wasn't."

"Shit." You breathe. "I'm sorry."

"I... I just keep thinking." Lara grimaces. "We should've flown a little lower. Shouldn't have stayed so close to the city. M-maybe if went back to resupply sooner..."

Without a word, you just lean in and wrap your arms around Lara in the tightest hug you can manage. You don't say anything at all. Lara's eyes widen in surprise at the sudden contact, but she eventually returns the hug, and you can almost swear you can see her tear up.

"Yo! Lovebirds! Let's get going!" Amy yells. "Smokey isn't gonna wait forever!"

Well, that was a great way to ruin the moment. You quickly break the hug off from Lara.

"Well, I guess we should get going." You say.

"Y-yeah! We should." Lara nods and then smiles. A real one, this time. "Thanks, Karla."

"Hey, emotional wrecks like us gotta stick together." You grin. "Now let's go earn some money."

"Of course!" Lara chuckles.

The two of you make your way to the hangar deck, where your Falcon is being prepped.

"About goddamn time!" Smokey scowls at you. "We were about to launch without loading up weapons! What do you need?"

You pause to think. Even though Kasna would no doubt send out air assets, bombing the defenses on the ground was also an essential element to fool the Kasnans. Sure, you had Amy and Delta Flight to handle ground attack, but sometimes a faster more nimble bird could get the job done better.

"Let's load up the QAAMs and try them out." You say.

"All right, we'll get them loaded." Smokey nods. "Better get in your plane. We'll be launching you soon."

---

A few minutes later, and you're up in the air with both Alpha and Delta flight, headed towards the Kasnan coast. Down below, you could see the wakes of Yuke warships. A small flotilla of destroyers and frigates escorting a pair of landing ships disgorging empty landing boats to complete the illusion.

Up in the air, your HUD began to beep as it started tagging friendly flights as they approached. You immediately saw Butterfly moving in along with another Atlas squadron of F-16s. There were a few more merc flights that you didn't immediately recognize, as well as two squadrons of Yuktobanian and one squadron of Osean Navy fighters.

Well, you were certainly coming in force, that was for sure.

"We are approaching the Kasnan coast." Loki warns. "You are now all weapons free. You may engage enemy craft at will."

"This is AWACS Eyesore, I'm picking up multiple Kasnan fighters coming in for intercept." You hear another AWACS controller announce. "ETA is three minutes to firing range."

"Come on boys, let's get 'em!" You hear one of the pilots whoop, and you see the majority of the merc flights hit afterburner and charge forward. A few squadrons, including the Atlas fighters and the navy fighters, seemed to be hanging back, no doubt to judge the situation.

Gunpods are a drag. Don't carry them if you can carry a missile in the same spot. Only time they're acceptable is when you put them on a hardpoint a missile can't, such as on the F-35B and C

"Well, if you wanna get Nimbus'd, you're free to do so." You say. "Not like I can order you around or anything."

"And don't you wish you could." Wolf says playfully. "We'll go soften them up for you, then!"

"Be careful out there, Wolf!" You hear Lara speak up, again saying something a bit out of character.

"Who do you think you're talking to?" Wolf laughs. "I'm the epitome of careful flying!"

You try not to snort at that.

As Alpha and Delta blast away, you can already see the two opposing fighter forces clash. Missile and smoke trails drew patterns across the sky, occasionally dotted with bright yellow flashes as planes and missiles exploded. The Kasnans and lower tier mercs were certainly getting pounded, though the momentum began to shift the moment Alpha swooped in, knocking F-15s out of the sky like flies.

"Careful, we all know what happens to those guys." Amy adds in.

"Aw, shut it." You snap.

"Well girls, it's your lucky day." Loki says. "I'm picking contacts to the north. I see one B-52 escorted by a squadron of F-15s. Intel suggests that the B-52 might be acting as a carrier for the recon drones."

"That makes it an important target, right? Right?" Dawn asks.

"The problem is, we can't shoot the plane down too soon." Lilian warns. "We're supposed to be tricking them into firing the missiles, right?"

"Doesn't stop us from engaging the escorts." Lara says. "We spook them enough, we can force them to deploy the drones early. That way the missiles will only be targeting us and not the furball."

"You sure about this, Stripes?" You ask.

"Yeah, Yeah I am, Valk." Lara assures you.

"But what if they decide not to fire at just? Then that's just a huge waste." Amy points out.

we need them to take off, but we can't let them get too close, we need them to launch a missile to see where its coming from, once they launch, then we can splash the drones and the carrier and the missile will flounder and lawndart

"Might as well intercept." You say. "Let's go!"

"Already on it!" Lara's F-15 pulls ahead.

"We're coming too!" Dawn says as the Nosferatus picked up speed to keep pace with you. "Maybe even the odds a little!"

The leader for the Atlas falcons then speaks up.

"Butterfly 1, perhaps we should-"

"Just hang back. Yer just gonna get in the way!" Dawn snaps.

"...fine, but we will intervene if we feel we have to."

"Yeah yeah, whatever."

Jeez, Dawn was really starting to remind you of a much younger, more adorable Lara. It was actually kind of unsettling.

"Bravo flight, you'll be in range of intercept shortly." Loki warns.

"Roger that." You say.

Both sides let off their first volley of missiles. And then immediately break off in an attempt to avoid the counterattack. Your squadron dives to the left while the Butterflies swerve right. In the first pass, six F-15s immediately go down, The Butterflies each get one while two go down by your hand. Your QAAM in particular jams itself right up an Eagle's engine intake and blows the entire craft into confetti. Meanwhile, the Kasnan missiles fail to really hit anything, their missiles having a hard time keeping up with your combined maneuvers. The remaining Eagles then break up to initiate individual engagements.

Meanwhile, you see the B-52 continue on its course, four sleek shapes mounted under its wings as it speeds towards the main engagement. On your radar, you see one of the Eagles try to get in behind you.

You decide to get rid of that pesky Eagle trying to get on your tail first. A few options immediately came to mind. You could do a loop to try to get behind the Eagle, assuming he couldn't react fast enough to counter you. Or you could try to get him into a turning fight, in which you were sure your F-16 was superior at. Or you could try and Immelman to reverse direction and initiate a head on attack.

And surprisingly enough, the Eagle pilot pulls on his stick too hard, and his Eagle actually freaking stalls, plummeting out of the sky. You glance back just in time to see the pilot panic and punch out, leaving his plane to nosedive into the sea below. It hits hard, pancaking against the surface before being engulfed by white foam and surf.

Well... you guess that counted as one of your kills. Maybe?

You scan your immediate surroundings again. Lara and Lilian were still engaging a pair of F-15s while the Butterflies were tangling with the remaining three. Amy, meanwhile, was doing her best to suppress AA emplacements on the shore.

Meanwhile, the B-52 at this point was almost on top of the main engagement.

Well kind of, the number generator's seeds are based on post time, and are actually influenced by anything you have in the name/subject fields, so whenever Merc rolls, it biases his dice, though it would take some statistical analysis to figure out how his individual trip and name field affect the dice.

Also post content size changes the result of dice.

TLDR: /tg/ dice are not random at all.

You let loose a stream of cannon fire, walking bullets up across the B-52's massive fuselage. The craft begins to leak thick black smoke, and you see the four drones it was carrying drop from its wings and speed off.

"This is Bravo 4 to all units, be advised, recon drones have been deployed! Be on the lookout for Nimbus missiles!" You warn.

The B-52 itself, meanwhile, tries to disengage, but considering how big and slow it was, it would never get away from you...

I guess you really do know you shit anon. Thanks for the lesson though. I guess that could possibly explain why some days Merc rolls consistently high because of his name and trip, though maybe not.

Although when you put it that way it's literally the definition of RNG, I remember abusing doing specific things in Golden Sun to get rare drops when I was a lad. So yeah it's not really random, but without knowing the algorithm it might as well be.

You launch 3 missiles in quick succession. Your QAAM hits first, blasting the nearest drones and practically splitting it in two. One of your regular missile snaps the wing off another drone, sending it into an unrecoverable spin, its simple programming utterly unable to figure out how to compensate.

However, the last two drones are slippery bastards, and manage to evade your third missile, twisting out of the way just in time.

"Bravo, Butterfly, be advised, Nimbus launch signatures have been detected!" Loki warns. "Two missiles, ETA fifteen seconds! Plotting projected course of the missiles!"

You then see new notifications on your radar screen, show two massive orange circles indicating each Nimbus' estimated blast radius.

And you right in the middle of the both of them.

Well shit, you were not sticking around here. Fucking burst missiles were the WORST.

"Everybody, break break break!" You yell as you perform a quick split s maneuver to grab as much speed and distance from the blast radius as possible. "I don't care if you got a bandit in your sights! Get out of there!"

Thankfully, you see both your flight and the Butterflies immediately break off and begin following your heading. The Eagles, seeing your formation retreat, begin to turn to pursue.

"No, you idiots, just keep going..." You scowl. At this rate, they were going to fly straight into their own damn Nimbus missiles. Didn't these guys have any semblance of coordination?!

"Hey, I don't know what the hell you guys are thinking, but you better turn the fuck around and get out of here!" You yell at the pursuing Eagles over an open channel. "You're gonna get blasted by your own damn missiles if you keep trying to chase!"

On your radar, you can see most of the remaining F-15s break off or at least slow down, as if trying to figure out their next move. However, one Eagle stubbornly presses forward at full speed. Dumb, stupid bastard.

He probably never even saw the Nimbus missiles before they completely vaporized him and his plane. At least the explosions convinced his buddies to break off and retreat for good.

"T-thanks for the warning." You hear one of the Eagle pilots say sheepishly. Fuck, he sounded so young, too.

"All right, all flights, pull back. Additional Nimbus launch signatures detected!" Loki says. "Mission objective achieved!"

On your radar screen, you could see the furball dissipate as both sides began to break off. You see that both sides looked to have been mauled pretty badly, though the Kasnans still suffered larger losses than the allied force. At least Alpha and Delta flights still looked intact.

"Yep! All green and accounted for!" Dawn says happily. "Just a few more kills and we'll all be ace!"

"Heh, that's great." You smile. "Stripes? How are you doing?"

"A bit better. We all got out, so I'm fine." Lara says.

"Though still, it's rather rare for you to go through a mission without getting a single kill." Lilian says.

"Eh, can't win them all." Lara grunts.

"True." Lilian concedes.

"Dunno, we all got out alive. I still consider that a win." You point out.

"Heh, you're right." Lara laughs. "Let's get outta here."
