You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Though yesterday was definitely not what anyone could call boring, you really hope that today will be a lot calmer. You're not sure if you can handle two days like that in a row.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

The warm rays of the sun paired with a chilly draft slowly pulls you back into the land of the conscious. Though you're still kind of achy after all that fighting you did yesterday, you feel pretty rested. And considering how shocked Carina was about the fluffiness of this bed, you're pretty sure that she-

Huh?

Just to make sure you're not making a mistake, you scan the bed maybe ten times before your brain finally accepts what it's seen- Carina is GONE.

"Oh shit shit shit shit..." you mutter under your breath as you hop out of your bed and pat the bed itself down just in case she's curled up in some weird position or something. And finally you give up and pull the covers off entirely, revealing Nothing.

Panic's starting to set in.

"Maybe she's in the bathroom...?" you say as you walk over to the open doorway to the toilet... nothing. You even pull back the shower curtain, but she isn't there either.

Calm.

Be calm.

After taking several deep breaths, you head over to the chair that you threw last night's clothes on and throw on your jacket... maybe she just went wandering the castle. You used to explore when you were little, that kind of stuff's totally expected. Right? And if she got lost, you can just ask Arnaud and he'll be able to find her!

Yeah, that's what you'll do. No panicking, just a god solid plan of action. Now all you need to do is find some socks and then you'll be good to go!

With that last thought, you head over to your drawer to find a fresh pair... and just barely hit your shin on the bottom drawer since it's open.

"...but I didn't leave it..."

As you bend down to close it, a wave of relief nearly knocks you over when you look inside. Somehow, Carina managed to curl herself up there and fall asleep.

As cute as she looks all nestled up in that drawer, watching her sleep there only serves to remind you of the conditions that she used to live in before you brought her here. Damn it all...

"Carina?" you call our as you gently nudge her. "It's morning..."
"Mmm?" Carina curls up even smaller than she had been and rubs her eyes. "Go way, this's my box..."

Ignoring that comment, you reach down into the drawer and rustle Carina's hair.

....getting her out of the squalor of Cateno, for starters?

We have a job. We're only like 17 years old, unmarried, etc. She has to find a place to fit in here in the castle because she can't free ride. Helping out cleaning and general maid work is the best way.

Nobody's saying she's going to disappear from our lives; we still live in the same place. But we need to make this adjustment in order for any of this to work in the long-term.

Straining your eyes in low light doesn't actually have any impact on your eyesight, that's just one of those old wives tales. All it does is make your eyes ache a bit, and if you seriously overexert the muscles your vision might be slightly blurry early the next day.

Vision deficiencies that aren't age or pointy object related are caused by deformations of the eye or defects in the retinal pigments, which are genetic.

You breathe a tired sigh as you enter your room, picking up the blankets that you'd covered the floor with just a few minutes ago and tossing them onto your bed. After that's done with, you walk over to the window and tap Carina on the shoulder.

"Hey," you say to the little girl.
"Reinhold!" she stares at you. "We're so high up!"

Another reaction that she shared with you...

"Yup," you nod. "Pretty cool, huh."
"Yeah, it's almost as high as when we were riding that wy..." Carina makes a frustrated face, "...that big monster thing yesterday! Do you ever get scared that you're gonna fall out though?"
"No," you laugh, "because I know better than to try and climb out my window."
"Ehehe..."

Best not to keep the maid waiting.

"Melanie's outside," you say. "She said that she wants to give you a bath."
"...but I'm not dirty yet," Carina replies, looking completely confused.
"Maybe not, but we take baths -every- day so we -never- get dirty."
"Wow..." she gasps. "So I don't gotta worry about getting itchy anymore!?"
"I'd certainly hope not," you say, shrugging. "Now let's go, okay?"
"'Kay!" she chirps.

While Carina races for the door, you locate the maid outfit that Melanie lent her yesterday so that you can return it.

As for the dress that Citrine bought her, you think it'll be more fun to leave that as a surprise.

"Alright," you say as you walk out into the hallway, "here's one little girl," you pat Carina on the head, "and one maid dress."
"Thanks, Reinhold," Melanie replies.
"Hey, you're the one who's doing -me- a favor here," you shrug.
"Hi, Melanie!" Carina says to the maid while hopping into the air as high as she can.

Even though she's pretty small herself, Carina's able to jump high enough to be eyelevel with her, and It's taking all you have to keep from laughing.

"Hi, Carina," Melanie says to her with a kindly smile. "Are you ready to get bathed and dressed?"
"Uh-huh!" Carina replies, filled with excitement.
"Alright then!" she laughs. "Reinhold, did you want me to bring her right back after she's dressed?"

I say we weigh up our options but don't make any decisions without Luci.
We ask Melanie and Arnaud what we positions we could realistically expect Carina to be able to find and then when we're having our conversation with Luci we bring it up like "I've been talking to Arnaud and Melanie and there's a good chance Carina could be enrolled as and X or Y."
We're not making any decisions, we're just informing ourselves better for when a decision is to be made. Making decisions with Luci doesn't mean we can't get advice from other people.

BUT before that happens, we need Luciana. We promised not to decide shit without her. So if there's a way to get her to come here, that's preferable.

Just setting the stage for the big decision/talk.

Once the two ladies have left, you duck back into your room and gather up a change of clothes before heading into the bathroom to take a quick shower. Once you're all nice and clean yourself, you throw on your clothes and then head back to your bed to retrieve your sword from its resting place. Thanks to all that unneeded panicking over Carina when you woke up, you neglected your usual morning ritual of saying hello to it!

...

......it kind of felt like it said "hi" back to you. That was weird.

Pushing that into the back of your mind, you decide to spend however long it'll be before Melanie and Carina get back practicing your artwork.

A million images race through your mind as you try and decide what to draw, but one in particular sticks with you. Though it's not all that "fresh" in your mind, it's definitely the one that's most worthy of becoming a proper drawing so you pull out your art supplies and go to work.

Linework...

Shading...

KNOCK KNOCK

A knocking at your door snaps you out of your melancholic daze. Closing your sketchbook, you place it on your desk before getting up from your seat.

"Reinhold!" Carina calls out. "Come and see!"
"Alright," you reply, "I'll be right there..."

Not wanting to keep the girl waiting, you head to the door and open it...

"Look!" Carina says, jumping up and down excitedly while Melanie watches on. "Citrine bought me this dress!"
"So she did," you laugh.
"Isn't it pretty?"

You feel kind of guilty that Citrine wasn't able to see Carina's reaction to her gift. This sight would probably make her day.

"It sure is," you nod.

After thanking Melanie for helping out once again, she scurries off to the Princess's room to help -her- get ready for the day. As for the two of you? You're both dressed so you might as well go ahead and head downstairs...

No, it probably doesn't need to be an absolute priority right away but it's not like learning what her affinity is is in any way a bad thing.
>>
>>37278497
Well, in order to read a scroll you first need to be able to read.

>>
>>37278497
>I don't see what harm it does, really.

It's dumb because we have literally nothing to gain from doing it so why waste time on that when we can be interacting with characters in more meaningful ways.
>>
>>37278535
Can she not count? She seems smart, and that at least is intuitive.
>>
>>37278481
Not for the magic thing, but because they're curious about what her affinity is.

I do think we should spend some of that money to get a good tutor for her, stat.
>>
After stepping side to grab your sketchbook (just in case), you rejoin Carina in the hallway and lead her down the nearest stairwell.

"Where're we going now?" Carina asks. "Are we gonna get something to eat?"
"Not yet," you reply. "But soon, okay?"
"'kay," she nods. "So where're we going if we're not gonna get food?
"We're going to see a friend of mine."
"Is it Nicolette?"
"Nope," you shake your head, "but his name's kind of similar to hers."
"Aww..."

She looks more disappointed about not getting to see Nicolette than she did when you told her that breakfast had to wait.
