You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

At approximately 13:20 PM, you resolved to sit and share a single beer and a half an hour or so of conversation with a bunch of mostly-strangers that live in the ruins of a tumbled apartment complex. Four hours and several assorted lagers later (they also had hot wings), you are lighter, springier, and ambling slowly through the uneven terrain of the Scar.

To be honest, you’re not nearly as buzzed as you should be – you have a light, floaty feeling of almost-worthiness, and that’s about it. You suppose there’s got to be some disadvantage to your new physiology (vivid night terrors, strange rashes, and possible hallucinations aside).

The horizon is a jagged line of almost-black, crashing over the skewed angles of the Scar like a wave. Laura walks a few steps ahead of you, the snow falling like a net around her. With January getting on its way, it’ll probably be one of the last times you see it this thick.

The soft thud-thud-thud of your footsteps seems to light up the dark, and, sketched in an alien, cognitive grey, you feel the subtle fits and pressures of the earth shift beneath you. As if somehow beholden to them, your thoughts turn.

think about creeper, its about time we moved the plot along instead of doing sidequests
>>
>>37266043
It's all plot, and frankly we need to try resolve some of it before charging off like a damn fool and letting it bite us in the ass.

The only thing stopping the facility waltzing right into the scar is the large number of mutants,
The only thing stopping the clear our of the mutants is the gang war.
Funnily enough, without the gang war the mutants would be in real trouble, but with it, they are supplied with jack. Folks really need someplace to go that is not the scar before said little war ends. Something we can probably ask the phantom agency about since we can pay for a minor job from them.
>>

>>37266118
its all plot but not all plot is equal, and besides assuming the facility knows we are in the scar theres really nothing stopping them from sending in a team, they are perfectly capable of stealth. besides were supposed to be playing a good guy, letting a gang war and jack production continue to save our own asses is out of character
>>
>>37266277
Bringing it down knowing it will bring in a bigger threat is more out of character. Taking steps before bringing it down is just good planning.

We know the gang war is providing cover that is stopping mutie control from sweeping them up.

As for the facility, even though they have stealth, that does not mean they could extract the prize once they had it. Not to mention their aversion to publicity and the likely hood any team would end up in a brawl. They've just been content to set traps for us at the moment, but if we do not at least force their base of op further afield than the city its just begging for a major operation to come sooner.
>>
>>37266366
we dont actually know for a fact the gang war is stopping mutie control, it might just be reluctance to fight a whole bunch of entrenched mutants with unknown powers, and honestly the facility has to face the problems you mentioned no matter what, if anything there inactivity means that creeper and his active jack production is simply the better choice.
besides the situation in the scar isn't sustainable at all and its been hinted to be coming to a head anyways.
>>
>>37266543
Well, the thing is, as long as the gang war is going on, all the gangs are hankering for extra manpower and extra firepower.

If mutant control tries to swoop in, all of the mutants are going to just join in with the gangs for protection and BAM you've got over 100 new supervillains with unknown powers overnight.
>>
>>37266543
Not exactly. The facility wins by default if they wait for mutant control to wipe the area and then pick us and laura up without a bolt hole.

I will give you the not knowing, but we do know things are going to come to a head with the mutant population in the new year when they start to rebuild the scar anyway, so the point is still one that needs addressing.

We don't know if the facility is working with creeps or not, the jack drug was leaked by typhon for cash, probably totally independant of them. As such, its just a side issue they are probably investigating.

Your final point is what im trying to get at. We need to sort out moving people. An abandoned warehouse district would be ideal.
>>
Kimura could beat Laura in a fight, but Laura has the upper hand when it comes to both stealth and speed. That's the reason they keep setting traps. Every time they've tried to bring the fight to Laura she would just run away.

Lady Deathstrike Is the only person working for the facility that can match Laura's speed. Which is probably why they've called her in. But now that we have Agility lvl 5 we might be able to actually fight Deathstrike instead of just running away.
>>
>[X] Laura
>seemed like the right time

The snow falls over the Scar in dribs and drabs, tumbling faintly through the dark. It falls over the broken swathes of apartments, over the burnt-out school sitting in the middle distance. It falls, you suppose, on Creeper, wherever he is. You imagine it sweeping across the city in bright, nearly intangible waves, something spectral and huge, so soft and quiet that it could be little more than a shared dream. Like a dream, it will be gone soon.

Ahead of you, the snow seems to move through Laura as it falls over her, as if she’s part of it, or it’s part of her. She’s so pale. She seems like she could have just risen out of it, a traveler from somewhere insubstantial and thin, her presence displacing the world around her with only the gentlest of impressions. Her footfalls are tiny, acoustic ripples, glowing in your audio-sight only for an instant before they fade away and disperse.

You can’t believe that there are people, people out in the snow, that want to hurt this creature.

“Laura.”

It’s quiet. You almost whisper it. The closing night seems to permit nothing more.

She turns around, her back arching sinuously, her cheeks glowing ever so slightly with the rosy touch of blood struggling under the surface. She stares at you for a moment while you catch up, waiting. Her breath shimmers against the cold.

Maybe it’s that slight buzz, and maybe it’s the omnipresence of the snow, but you feel something pushing at you from deep within. Something a little stronger than usual, a little more courageous.

“John?” She blinks. “Is something the matter?”

Wow... just got here. I agree with anons that there isn't really a perfect moment, and that sometimes you've gotta gamble in love, just not sure how well JJ pulls this off

>>37267334
>popping Laura's cherry
Crusty said that Laura was dtf around thread 40. JJ just needs to be the one to initiate it. The only reason this hasn't happened sooner is because anons keep saying it's not the right time or they want the relationship to develop naturally.
>>

Can't say I've had this problem. Also, JJ's teeth win. He can literally bite through steel. Probably not a good thing in this situation.
>>
>>37267461
>develop naturally

See this feels natural, it took nearly a hundred threads for JJ to fall in love and want to kiss her. I think when they mean by natural, they mean Laura has recovered from the trauma of the facility (never happening) and having her initiate a kiss so there isn't blowback by fucking up
>>
>>37267580

No it doesn't.

They talked to some mutants near their home, JJ was drinking and now they're walking home together.

>(1/3)

Her eyes track you as you move closer, a hint of confusion playing at her brow. You can’t look away from them – if you do, you’ll lose your nerve, let it flitter away into the earthward rush of the snow, or into the night behind it. And you won’t get it back. Not tonight, or the night after, or the night after that. You feel light, every inch closer lifting you a little – just a little – bit further off the ground. You’re such a weightless, flimsy thing right now, you think you might shatter if you bottle it and run.

She sniffs at the air. She does that when she’s not sure what’s happening.

“…John?”

You lean in, and you feel her heart seize in her chest, and then… and then your lips are on hers.

It’s strange. It passes through the two of you like lightning. You feel her tense immediately, her hands rising to your chest, her shoulders scrunching up, her breath catching in her breast and circling madly for a second or two, uncertain of where to go or what to do. For a moment you feel like she might fall apart, bones and arteries flailing out at the behest of disparate, mad impulses. Then… she disentangles. You feel the shock and the confusion drain out of her. Her heart pounds in her chest, blood thrashing in her veins, bleating against the cold and the night and against you, but slowly, gradually, she seems to step back into herself, and you feel a wave of something, something equal in delight and surprise and awe, as she moves her lips against yours, pushing back against you, into you.

The hands that seemed ready to push you away just a second ago stretch their fingers, splaying across your chest, as if trying to hold on to as much as you as possible. Responding without thought, your hands course down her back, pulling her closer.
>>
>>37267934
>she kisses back

>>
>>37267852
>Guess what, most kisses and relationships don't start that way
This argument doesn't even make sense. Why would you purposefully aim for a boring and plain development when you could take some time to make an interesting and cathartic one?
Making a story boring for the sake of "realism"is stupid.
>>
>>37267934
Hell yeah!
>>
>(2/3)

Eventually, after what feels like ages, you come apart. Her breath is hot and wet and drawn from her lungs in long, cautious heaves. You breathe it in and feel your blood glow in response, pummeling at the borders of you, urging you to take her again.

“I…” She shifts awkwardly on her feet, looking up into your eyes with an expression you don’t recognize. “I will… I will have to… think…”

You nod. Yeah.

The two of you linger a moment longer, your breath mingling, your skin quivering at the slightest movement of one another.

The snow falls around you, and over you, and throughout the night.
>>
>>37267892
This is a good argument. Too many people are complaining by saying this isn't realistic enough. Deciding to kiss a girl because you like her is very realistic. I don't know any relationships that started off like a Disney movie.

But this is a story after all and I'll agree it's a little anti-climactic. But I'm OK with it the way it is.

That night is a frenzy of displaced thought. You dream of fire and ash from the top of grand mountains, boiling through the sky in dark, volcanic clouds. In your wake stride the Star, the Tower, and then, finally, Death. They follow you like shadows, kissing your feet and idolizing you. Sometimes she is the Star, sometimes she is the Tower, and sometimes she’s Death. Either way, the cycle always ends the same, with her folding into you, and you into her, screaming together and sweating and choking one another with your lips. There are snakes everywhere, birth from the roots of the mountains like children from the womb of the earth. They surround you and clothe you, and bite you only in the most gentle manner possible.

You are not afraid of them.

Slowly, the torrent parts, and you feel your eyelids heaving open. Sunlight cuts at your vision, drifting over you like a veil, slowly describing the world to your bleary eyes. The stark edges of the stairs confuse you for a moment, and then you call back to yourself the recollection of last night, of the snow, of settling down to sleep in the mouth of the station, where the sun will be waiting, and of –

Your heart skips. She lies against you, her hair matted against your chest, her breath sighing in and out in quiet, rhythmic heaves. You stare at her for a moment, at her lips, and her cheeks, and the tiny string of drool soaking into your jacket, and you almost can’t believe it.

This is… this…

Well.

You glance down again. You think she’s actually asleep, not simply resting as she’s prone to do. Shifting carefully, you glance at your watch.

We as players know JJ is in love. But we're not 100% sure about Laura. Laura finally returning JJ's feelings seems pretty damn climatic to me. As far as story telling goes this is an excellent set up.

Maybe not next thread tho.

>In your wake stride the Star, the Tower, and then, finally, Death.
Huh. Why you gotta be so prophetic, JJ?
For those not up to date on their Tarot (didn't you people pay attention in wizard school?!):

The Star is the card of Hope. 'Bout it, really.

The Tower generally represents Chaos, Entropy, and "Wiping the slate clean". Symbolic of hubris, laying low even the mightiest of men, etc. etc. Literally the nastiest card in the deck, invariably a worse sign than the Devil or Death. Speaking of which...

Death is the card of Loss, but also the changing of cycles, where one ends and another begins. Also represents "Just desserts" - good folks might catch a break at the end, sinful folks GET IN THE FUCKING BAG.

Yeah… You lean a little closer, studying the way her eyes move behind their lids. She’s asleep.

Okay then.

Moving with utmost care, you fold your arms around her, pushing yourself up against the stairway wall. She’s light – you forget how small she is, sometimes, what with her being a badass and such. She shifts minutely, curling up a little tighter in your arms, and her lips move, mouthing out some tiny, indecipherable syllable. You wonder what kind of things she dreams about.

Probably not snakes wrapping around everything. Yikes.

Carrying her in, you lay her down beside her tent, reaching in to fetch her blanket. You hear a muffled “mwah?” from Layla’s tent, and a moment later her head emerges, staring at you with only the bleary, furthest fringes of cognition evident in her expression.

“Mfghle?”

“No.” You shake your head. “You’re dreaming.”

“Owf.”

She collapses back into her tent, going from vertical to horizontal in one smooth motion.

Laying the blanket over her, you leave Laura to her slumber, and go check out some eats.

Fortunately, it would seem that your friends have made the most of your money. A small forest of Wal-Mart bags lies in clumps near the entrance. You don’t imagine you’ll be seeing any of the green you lent them for their shopping trip anytime soon.

You snack for a while, enjoying the early-morning quiet, and go over your messages.

>3 Unread Messages

You have one from Peter. He says he’s sorry he had to bail so quickly yesterday, and he’s super grateful and stuff. The second is Agency business. Apparently Mr. Kamar is being weird, and… you have to read this bit twice… he wants his info from you directly. Huh.

Well. You’re kinda just glad there’s nothing about Laura.

Hmmm. Weird. You guess you better –

Hey. Wait a minute.

You rub your eyes.

>3 Recent Messages

…Was that always there? Did it just come in?

Shrugging, you open the message… and are mildly annoyed when it’s literally just lots and lots of nothing. As in, you can scroll down for ages, but there’s nothing there. Just blank message space. No text whatsoever.

“Stupid…”

You close it.

You –

Your head throbs. You feel an immense, instantaneous headache cluster up at the base of your neck, forcing its way along your spine and up into the dome of your skull, where it bursts open like a storm in the frenzy of being born. The pain subsides quickly and without warning, but it leaves you with the sensation of… something you’d describe as static.

Everything seems to shift and flicker, as if viewed through the lens of a dream. The concrete bubbles under your feet, and shifts, and shuffles.

In the corner of your eye, you spot Laura moving.

“H-hey, are you”–

Your words trail away when you notice the weird, artificial way her back is arching away from the floor. She strains up at you like a beast looking up from its meal, like something impelled upon strings, and her mouth opens into a huge, slack void.

Her eyes are pools of starry light.

“THEY COME WILLINGLY.” It tumbles out of her mouth but it’s not her voice. It’s not any kind of real voice. It stretches and twists and shifts up and down in pitch like something being conveyed from all angles. “MOSTLY.”

You blink.

Reality snaps back. You see the world clearly again.

Laura hasn’t moved. She’s exactly as she was when you left her.

You glance down at your phone.

Wha – what was that?

You clutch at your head, the echoes of the pain subsiding, and for a moment you almost expect it to happen again. It doesn’t, but… but you feel something else.

It moves through you like a kiss, like the touch of something warm and familiar, like wind over the lake and the smell of grass and the touch of sun. It is like all of these things, but like none of them; it exists inside you, pure and without infringement from the world beyond, a budding, a transforming, a pupating, a thing growing beautifully.

You feel yourself get up and head to the stairs. You feel yourself shudder and wrap your jacket in tighter against the cold. You feel yourself move across the Scar.

You arrive at a squat, ruined house near the edge of the devastation. The walls are slashed with long, black burns and it half-sinks into the ground, one end seeming to have melted partway into the concrete and earth and stone below. It stinks. It godawful stinks. The air here is thick with bile and rot. If anything smells like death, this smells like death.

You feel yourself enter.

>(2/2)

The tilted world inside is cut in shades of dark, all windows boarded shut. The floor is wet. Something thick and slippery sloshes against your boots, and you think you smell something like cyanide through the rot, or nightshade. The spillage thickens as you move, inexplicably, toward the dining room. Eventually you might as well be trudging through ancient, crusted mud.

In the center of the room, where there should be a dining table, a thin, gnarled shape sits, half-cocooned in unidentifiable, fleshy muck. It's wound around itself like a fetus, its arms coiling awkwardly, as if too soft to be fully formed. Its features are bare and nigh translucent, like something aborted, hairless and thin and wretched. It has an expression, though, written in sockets without eyes and in a mouth without teeth or a tongue or even gums. It looks terrified.

Ah.

You –

You – you feel your jaw snap.

>Hunger Level: 20

The smell is terrible. It crowds in on you like a smog, almost tangible to you, offering you fine wines of blood and rot, raising glasses to you, their edges spilling with the froth of genocides. It clots every inch of you, stuck like a cough in your throat – you hack and hack and hack as you feel yourself drawing it in, breathing deeply, reaching past the aroma of the filth into the true, inner scent.

>Metastasis Failure
>Hunger Level: 100

Your chest burns from the inside out and you feel steam leaking through your jacket. It’s almost sexual, the lure of it. The smell of cracked genetic pathways, of raw material, of things left to rot, things still brimming with the blessing of information, with the writings of God, of –

Your jaw unhinges.

You grab a clump of flesh from the figure, tearing it away in long, stringy bands. It’s dry. Like clay.

You –

You –

You throw it aside, your eyes bulging in disgust, and stumble out of the house.

You get as far as you can before the urge to heave overwhelms you, and spend the next five or six minutes vomiting uncontrollably into the snow.

And something – something inside you – feels unsatisfied somehow.

VIBRATIONAL FOCUSING
Requires: Level 3 Sonic Scream, Level 4 Enhanced Senses, Level 3 Enhanced Agility
Cost: 2
JJ may refine the normal kinetic force of his physical attacks into focused vibrational waves. These pulses can pass travel through materials to deliver the force of his attacks to a particular part of a system, rather than spreading it across said system’s surface area.

This was my main reason for wanting it. But ya, that vote had way more voters than normal, so someone was probably spamming. Nothing we can do about it tho.

You – you need to get back to the station.

You need to get away from here.

Without so much as a glance over your shoulder, you leave the house behind, the smell slowly trailing away from your wake. You felt so hungry back there, like you could eat… everything. You felt like that soft, translucent, succulent, delicious, warm, nourishing, delightful flesh was the most wonderful thing in the world, and you, you had to have it. You felt –

You know what? You don’t want to think about how you felt.

You make it back to the station just in time to see someone – doesn’t look like anyone you know, but you’re at quite a distance – emerging from the stairwell. They head off in the opposite direction.

Whatever.

Something’s cooking when you get in. Smells like chicken and bacon and… parsnips? Doesn’t smell as good as it should.

Gaby’s at the stove, seemingly guiding Layla through cooking safety. Kevin and Lucas are chatting nearby. You look around for Laura and Noriko, and eventually spot them at the far end of the platform, sitting with their lags hanging over the tracks. They glance back at you as you enter, and Laura looks away as soon as she realizes that you've noticed. Everything anyone’s saying is garbled nonsense to you. The sound reaches you but you can’t disentangle the meaning. Your head is busy, busy being too weird and creepy for your own liking.

Lucas waves over at you.

“Sbdy foom a yrn xzen swaup.”

You nod weakly.

“Y-yeah?”

You weren’t listening. Nothing makes sense.

You double-take.

“What was that, Lucas?”

Horrific corpse strangeness or not, you feel a little bad about ignoring him.

“Young X-Men, man.” He grins lopsidedly. “One of ‘em showed up, says the Corsairs have agreed to meet tonight, out at the old school.”

Ah.

“Right.” You nod, massaging your head. “Right, right. Who was it?”

“Dunno.” He says, shrugging. “She was wearing a burqa. Or a niqab. One of ‘em.”

You have absolutely no clue what the difference between those two things is, just that they’re both Muslim things.

“Okay…”

You sigh. Great timing, Hisako. Or Jono. Whichever.

>(2/2)

The following conversation is, long, awkward, and full of short breaks. There are bits that make no sense to you, and as you tell your tale you’re inwardly debating with yourself as to what stays in and what should be subject to your editorial attention. You decide not to mention that you almost took a bite out of the… whatever it was. Instead you tell them it made you feel deathly ill (which is true), and that you think it could be contagious somehow or maybe just poisonous.

“So… it was… a dead body?” Gaby says, looking pretty horrified.

“Kind of.” You have to admit, you don’t know what it was. “It was something like that. It was like something had…”

What was the word it made you think of?

>Metastasis

Metastasis. Metastasize. To spread by change of form.

“…changed it. Or grown from it.”

Kevin raises a hand very slightly. “If it’s dangerous, I could probably, like, disintegrate it. Stuff I touch all turns out the same way. Harmless dust.”

You nod. That’s a pretty good idea. You –

You catch Laura’s gaze out the corner of your eye, and you realize that she knows you’re hiding something. She’s got that studious, coldly analytical stare of hers going on. She looks away when you meet her eyes, though.

“What about everyone else?” Says Noriko.

“Hmmm?” Everyone what?

“Everyone else.” She raises her arms, spreading them out as if gesturing to a vast audience. “Everyone here. Shouldn’t people know about this?”

Lucas nods. “Yeah. I’d want to know.”

Well, they’re kinda right. You don’t want to go whipping the entire Scar up into a frenzy, though. There’s no telling how bad that could get.

“You’re right.” You say. “If we’re meeting Jono and Hisako tonight, I say we should bring it up with them. Until then… I think we should keep watch over it.”

“Like, a stake-out?” Chirps Layla, who has been oddly silent so far.

You nod.

“Yeah, exactly. We want to make sure this thing doesn’t hurt anyone.”

You catch Noriko smiling almost approvingly at that.

“Alright then.” She speaks up, putting her hands on her hips. “I can do that. I want Kevin and Gaby with me, though.”

You blink. That was a rather speedy bit of volunteering.

“…Why them?”

She jabs a finger at Kevin, who shifts uncomfortably at the attention.

“Kevin can get rid of the stuff if gets dangerous.”

With her other hand, she points to Gaby.

“Gaby can get away and tell someone if things go wrong.”

“Oh…” Okay. That… seems pretty sound.

You guys, Joseph only really started giving a shit when he figured out we were actually related to dad instead of just another mutant who got treated by him. If this is his work, it probably doesn't care about Gaby. If it worked on any random mutant he treated, it might spring the trap when it could be landing him the jackpot.

“That… that sounds pretty much like a good idea.”

Huh.

You weren’t really expecting that from Noriko. You knew she was tough, but you didn’t figure her for much of a traditional action gal.

“Well …” Sighing a bit, you heave yourself up and tug out your phone, edging back toward the exit, where the signal is better. “While you get on with that, I’m gonna call Peter.”

“Peter!?” It’s possibly a bit worrying, how enthusiastic Layla sounds about that.

“Peter?” Noriko… less so.

“Yeah. He’s… a science guy.” You say. She does not look particularly convinced. “He’s the most science guy I know.”

That’s not actually the truth. But he is the most science guy you regularly associate with.

“Alright, fine by me.” Noriko relents, raising her hands up in mock defeat. “Just make sure he doesn’t get himself hurt, yeah? He’s got a family. I still don’t feel so great about calling him last time.”

You nod. You’ll make sure he’s only as involved as he has to be.
>>
>>37273410

>(2/2)

Making your way to the base of the stairs, you send a short message to Peter. You leave out the worst of it, just letting him know that there’s something weird up and you could really use his help with figuring it out. Behind you, you can hear Noriko and Kevin rummaging through your supplies – apparently, they’re not staking out no old ass derelict without a packed lunch.

You hear Laura coming long before she sidles up beside you, but you don’t move.

She’s staring at the ground, still, her eyes doing their best to avoid contact with yours.

“You’re afraid of something.” She states, after a brief silence.

You breathe her scent in, trying to wash away the events of the morning. But the urge remains. You can feel it, crouched like some pre-human monster in the farthest trenches of your mind.

“Yep.” You say, your voice quavering slightly. “I really am.”

She’s quiet for a moment, and then warmth of her hand grazes against yours, her fingers feeling tentatively for purchase. Slowly, cautiously, you knot yours through hers, and the two of you stand by the mouth of the station, uncaring of the January breeze.

The world of the Scar that verges in from outside is silent and entirely still, and, for a moment, you can almost believe that things will stay as they are forever.

I can get behind everything up to the tree, is what I'm saying. Like, having a green thumb and being able to grow food easily is great. On the Joshua Tree:

Obviously, there would be backlash from a lot of people to such a thing.

On the other hand, though, there are a lot of people in the world that hold on to their prejudices mostly out of convenience. Many of these people would change their tune with faced with the prospect of curing all the most horrible stuff.

Basically, it wouldn't JUST be SENTINELS SUDDENLY.

Though I guess if it got out far enough, it could result in, like, a civil war or something.
