Welcome to Academy City. The time is afternoon, the weather is smoky, and the date is Christmas.

You are Kyril Torikov and you were sighing. Christmas was going so, so well. This morning you had a party with your friends. You hadn’t explicitly attended as yourself but you understood that everyone one else in the room was aware of it. There also was a poker game involved. Despite the odds you were the one to walk away with 6 million in winnings. That however did not explain why you are speeding along the highway while dissuading pursuit with a shotgun. You were not nearly as successful as you hoped to be. Your pursuers were the Hounds of Tindalos and they were tenacious. At least you had a plan to get out of this ridiculous situation.

Aias the Unconquered, the Code M artefact currently resting in the back seat of Ben-jii’s car, was the answer. Rather it was the key. The plan involved its usage while Ben-jii found a way to get the four of you out of danger. Sadly it Kaoru wasn’t of much help. Ben-jii didn’t want her involved with otherworldly forces especially when it was such a hassle to deal with. You were not so fortunate. Since you could perceive them in some manner, there was no way you would escape their notice. As an aside, Ben-jii had only been in their presence indirectly before so he too was performing said rituals for his benefit. Both of you weren’t responsible for their appearance. That would be the girl named Ilija sitting next to Kaoru in the back. In a way, it was her fault. She had messed with the natural order. Now it was coming back to bite her, quite literally. Before plans were finalised you were able to get more information on,

“As long as you don’t acknowledge their existence you should be fine,” Ben-jii told Kaoru.

It was one thing to know they exist. It was another to admit it. Code M was weird like that. You didn’t know what exactly Ilija did to catch their attention though.

“Don’t sweat it with the Lovecraft stuff, I mean it’s pretty normal for Code M in America to emulate and draw power from it,” he continued, “I prefer movies but it’s become a bit of required reading after a cabal tried to raise the sunken city of R’lyeh.”

“I recall,” Kaoru turned to Ilija, “So what exactly did you do?”

The girl in question was very reluctant to answer,

“It was supposed to be an experiment. To get the attention of the Time Paradogs. If I could survive it then the experiment would have succeed.”

“The Alimango Incident,” Ben-jii breathed, “Goddamn I hate time travel.”

“That’s good and all,” you grabbed more shells and reloaded, “But how does that help the current situation?”

“‘While I cannot win, I cannot die’, that is the essence of the artefact Aias the Unconquered,” Ilija answered, “While I cannot die, the Hounds of Tindalos will not chase me. After that, it was a matter of sealing their gaze away with some putty.”

“And when He-Who-Is-Not-Be-Named tells you something you generally don’t ask why,” Ben-jii added dryly, “We’re three so there’s clearly not enough to go around.”

“We can’t just stop and buy some?” Kaoru asked.

“We can, but not right now and I don’t want to risk pulling in random civilians either. You’re drawing a fine line as it is. One of us needs to seal away their gaze while the other handles the shield and the shield won’t work without a ritual to transfer over protection,” he explained, “VERDICT, it’s up to you, either drive or handle the shield. I’ll give Ilija some sux once I find it so we can begin.”

“I have to say, that’s a terrible pun,” Ben-jii said, “Even if it makes them sound harmless.”

“Unfortunately, it was my sister who named them, and it kind of stuck,” Ilija sighed.

Ben-jii found the syringe he was looking for and passed it to her.

“So I’m pretty sure you already know this, coming from the future and everything, but you’re going to go in to cardiac arrest pretty fast so wait until we’re done on our end alright?”

“I’ll drive,” you told Ben-jii.

“Good.”

It took some awkward gymnastics but eventually you replaced Ben-jii in the driver’s seat. CADRE was helpful enough to keep you on the road and roaring down the highway at almost twice the speed limit. At least you weren’t going to get a ticket this time. The inbuilt GPS displayed in the bottom corner of your sight. A speedo and tachometer was situated on the other side. It was kind of redundant.

“Set a course for the nearest modelling store or something,” Ben-jii instructed, “Ilija, hit it.”

The GPS sorted that out as you continued, slowing down only to exit the highway. You could barely hear the sound of gunfire over the tires screeching. You think Kaoru was trying to keep Ilija still while the poison did its work.

“We’ll have ten minutes tops to get some putty and to get her to a hospital before brain damage sets in,” Ben-jii continued, “You got that Odysseus?”

“You don’t have any defibrillators on you?”

“At home maybe and it’s not too far but I’d rather have a professional deal with her.”

Stopping for the putty would cost you five. The nearest hospital from that was seven minutes away, for a total of twelve. That was unacceptable. Ben-jii’s place was potentially only four minutes but there was still a lot of traffic between the two.

Briefly, very briefly, you thought about calling in a certain electromaster to help. Then you realised it was impractical. They’d have to find you first, assuming they knew how to restart a stopped heart safely. Then they’d have questions and you were pretty sure they’d want one and those that didn’t ask were harder to come by. That’s why you decided on heading to Ben-jii’s place. As much as you valued Ilija’s life, you also valued yours. All sorts of things could have gone wrong with this decision but thankfully there were no problems.

With rough cough Ilija’s breathing returned. It was just in the nick of time. Her eyes fluttered for a moment until they rested on you. She wasn’t grateful. No, it was more like you met her expectations exactly. Then sleep took her. You tried not to think about it too much.

“Kaur keep an eye on her,” Ben-jii put away the defibrillator, “We’re not out of the woods yet.”

Kaoru only nodded sat in the armchair across the girl sleeping on the couch. You followed Ben-jii over to his study. It was a big apartment for a mere Associate Lecturer. The room was small but it was relatively private as he started a conference call with Nayuta.

“We have two days,” he spoke, “Two days of me going beserk and then killing myself.”

That didn’t sound too bad.

“Unfortunately a simple defib unit won’t save me since I’ll have stabbed myself in the heart.”

Spoke too soon apparently.

“So you want us to lock you in a room or something?” Nayuta asked

“I’ll check myself in to jail, it’s the bringing me back to life that’s a bit tricky. It’ll require Ambrosia.”

Nayuta paused for a moment. A quick search netted you nothing but a codename and a reference to the food that Greek Gods ate.

“The higher ups won’t let you,” Nayuta shook her head, “it’s too big a risk, sorry.”

She ended the call. Ben-jii looked at you. His expression was an unvoiced question,

“Wanna help me with this?”

“Need some help?” you offered.

“A little,” he smiled, “Course this will have to be all, off the books and everything.”

The both of you walked back in to the living room. Ben-jii shook Ilija awake and gave her a single piece of silver that glowed yellow. Despite her tiredness, she smirked and replied,

“Anything for Captain America.”

“What’s going on?” Kaoru was confused.

“I need her to wait here for a doctor before getting handed off,” he answered, “VERDICT will keep watch over her for the rest of the day. Now, I need to find some aspirin, Merry Christmas you two.”

With that he left swiftly, no doubt heading out to find a padded room.

“I suppose it is a Merry Christmas, Hounds of Tindalos aside,” Kaoru agreed, “I would like to confirm that I am no longer required.”

You don’t think she was. Hopefully this didn’t mean you would have to break too many laws to help out Ben-jii. Ilija watched her go quietly before turning back to you. The piece of silver slowly danced on her knuckles. Then she got up and moved to a part of the wall. The coin slid smoothly in to the wall. In return, a gun slid out. It was a gigantic rifle compared to her. CADRE identified it as the Metal Eater MX. She set it down before disappearing in to another room, coming out with a cello case. It didn’t take much effort for her to dismantle the gun and fit it in to the case. Looks like help requiring nothing illegal was just too much to ask for.

As she slung it on her back you asked,

“Where are we going?”

“I know where Ambrosia is being kept,” she replied, “But we’re going to need help and information. You’re the one with the contacts let’s go see them.”

You need more information. As much as you trusted Ilija to know where this “Ambrosia” was kept, she still needed help and information. The first you understood but not the second. She was a time traveller, shouldn’t she know this already? There were a lot of things that could go, or already went, wrong and she was taking steps to make sure it didn’t. Ben-jii was right. You were starting to hate time travel.

On the way out, she had fished a phone from her pocket. You knew it wasn’t supposed to be there, but there it was. She dialled a number.

“Third Echelon?” she spoke, “Have you ever heard of Codename: Ambrosia?”

She was obviously lying about needing your contacts if she had your little sister, sisters, on speed dial.

“You’re not threatening onii-san are you says Misaka says Misaka as she asked incredulously over the phone.”

All the cameras in the area started tracking the two of you. The only reason you could hear was because someone had patched you in to the call.

“Of course not. I would never threaten onii-sama,” she replied with what sounded like humour, “If you’re good you might get to see him again.”

That sounded like a threat to you.

“Onii-san, you’re not stealing it or anything right says Misaka says Misaka as she asks for confirmation.”

“Am I?” you turned to the girl next to you.

“No, we just need to borrow it for a moment,” Ilija confirmed, “she isn’t even going to leave this city. I would like you to find the actual generator keeping her on ice. Onii-sama and I will handle the rest.”

“Ah, onii-san is cheating on Kudou-sama says Misaka says Misaka as she protests this arrangement vehemently.”

“He’s not cheating on anyone,” she looked at you, “is he?”

You shook your head.

“See?”

“Fine, I’ll call back says Misaka says Misaka as she reluctantly accepts the commission.”

All that’s left was to find some help and while you walked you,

“So what are we dealing with here? Ambrosia that is?”

“Biological agent says Misaka says Misaka, as she informs onii-san sneakily.”

Probably not sneakily enough, Ilija just turned towards you and asked,

“I thought you’d call me later?”

The girl beside you was amused.

“It’s supposed to be a private call says Misaka says Misaka as she mumbles grumpily.”

Ilija rejoins the conversation on her phone.

“Kept frozen somewhere in School District 23, supposedly immortal, says Misaka says Misaka as she rattles off the facts.”

“You called Ambrosia a she for a moment there,” you remarked.

“A slip of the tongue,” Ilija sighed, “Yes, it’s an actual person.”

“Following records for incarceration and certain paper trails,” your sister trails off before exclaiming, “Ah hah! Her identity matches those of Ladylee Tangleroad says Misaka says Misaka as she triumphantly announces her discovery.”

It wasn’t really that important to you.

“How well is she guarded and how is she going to help Ben-jii when he’s not even dead yet?”

“Hmmmmmm, says Misaka says Misaka as she contemplates the benefits of cloning.”

“We’re not cloning her,” Ilija spoke, “We’re just going to borrow her heart for a bit. She’ll live, he’ll live, problem solved.”

“Well, the automated turrets and systems are easily bypassed, it’s the response from Anti-Skill that will be a problem says Misaka says Misaka as she answers onii-san’s first question.”

“Which is why we’ll go to THIEF to arrange for some help,” Ilija continued.

That made sense.

“Don’t bother,” Sagara’s voice came on, “I heard my favourite associate wishes to acquire our services.”

Mishka probably patched him in as you walked.

“That I do oji-sama,” Ilija replied, “One last job.”

The time is sunset, the weather is silent and the date remains unchanged.

It took a while to hammer out but it was nice that you could move while the two talked. Your target was up ahead. It was a nondescript refrigeration plant and somewhere inside was who you needed. There wasn’t much security, most of it automated. While Ilija had given you the option, you were pretty sure she already knew what you were going to pick. That was because she was fine with either choice.

The first option was to have you infiltrate on your own and have someone engineer a distraction so you could slip out. It wasn’t hard. The guards weren’t specially trained, nor were they particularly vigilant. All of this was to sell the illusion of normalcy. You’d have the third best hacker, supposedly, in the city making sure you didn’t leave a single electronic trace. The other option was to let the career thieves handle it while you provided overwatch. Ilija did have a gigantic automatic anti-materiel rifle on her back after all. Hell you didn’t even have to pull the trigger. Just being a spotter was more than enough to help Ilija out.

There were other options of course but those two were just the most obvious ones.

The two of you set up camp on a nearby building. It wasn’t for lack of sight lines or anything. It was because you wanted to be able to shoot things in a timely manner. The farther out, the longer it took for the bullet to reach its target. Rapid reaction was the key. It was strange, you thought, how you were sitting at range from the target instead of getting in up close. Then again, a flashy golden helmet wasn’t the stealthiest thing around. It wasn’t as stealthy as a pair of young men disguised as delivery men. A part of you missed it, watching as one distracted the guard out front while the second double tapped him, twice for good measure. It wasn’t a seedy district like the tenth so they did have to hide the body, and the blood. It was nightfall, no one would be around to look but at least they were cautious.

Sadly it was all for naught. Anti-Skill were out and about. You reckon Ben-jii’s conversation with Nayuta was the cause. Well it wasn’t like they found the kind of trouble they were looking for yet. Still they were encircling the target building and your two hired hands still had no idea what was waiting outside. You thought about giving them something to think about. The Metal Eater MX was anything but silent however and you were assured these guys were professionals. Ilija was on the trigger just awaiting your signal.

If anything, you expected her to miss deliberately. There was no doubt that they’d zero in on your position as soon as the shot struck home but that was the point of the distraction. There was only one van hanging back. The things were rated to take anti-tank munitions and still keep trucking like nobody’s business. You had even sat inside one before. It made you glad you were sitting here in your perch than down there. Ten shots, nigh simultaneous, was enough to ruin its engine block. The impact threw up sparks and curses as the officers inside took care to exit the vehicle. They were afraid of follow up shots.

Their passengers had dismounted long ago. The officers fanned out in seemingly random patrol patterns, perhaps looking to lock down the streets with spike strips and roadblocks. Now they were all converging in your general direction. Not all of them, and not all at once of course. They had automatic weapons out and their safeties were off. It’d take a bit for Ilija to relocate. An anti-materiel rifle was heavy for a girl her size despite her apparent familiarity with it. You were the look out. Two officers were closing on the building, as they stepped in, Ilija started to climb out the fire exit. They hadn’t seen you but whatever long distance support they had then it had told them the shots had come from here. You were going to,

It was that easy, perhaps too much so. You were out of there, leaving behind only the faint smell of gunpowder. The drop off point was in the eighteenth. It was by one Nagatenjouki’s dorms. You vaguely recall a fiery escapade around there. Hopefully no such thing repeated itself. Ilija moved down the street, you in tow. It’d look odd, but this was Academy City, and none of the Anti-Skill that were rushing in the opposite direction gave you trouble. You were supposed to keep an eye on her after all. Just as things were going so well, however, they went terribly wrong.

Your couriers were prompt. Having arrived only minutes before you did, slipping through the chaos of your distraction with little fuss. It was only mere minutes since they had been killed. One had a crushed through, having suffocated confused and terrified. The other had his throat slip. Their guns were missing. So was Ambrosia, or Ladylee Tangleroad. Well maybe there was a reason Nayuta told Ben-jii they wouldn’t let an apparent murder machine who they couldn’t kill out of the icebox that kept her immobilised. As you stood there, just staring at the empty box, you couldn’t help but wonder why things had to be so complicated.

How did helping Ben-jii require the freedom of threat you couldn’t even begin to fathom? Oh right, you needed her heart. Because Ben-jii needed a replacement heart after he stabbed himself due to the side effects of a Code M artefact. Code M was weird like that. This was an off the books assignment, a personal favour for him. The regular Judgement dispatch noticed nearly flooded your helmets. Escaped prisoner, armed, dangerous, and quite willing to kill, the bulletin read. She was also Code M. You sighed. It was always coming back to this. Her last known direction was towards,

As far as killers went, you had to say that she was efficient. As you ran, Ilija following as quickly as she could, you watched the street camera feeds. The Judgement dispatch notice was then updated. It advised each and every officer to quietly go back to whatever it was they were doing and not engage this particular threat. Of course, you were the only exception. She had taken a beating, several shots from snipers, and she still kept going, kept moving, kept eviscerating whoever got in her way. Three dozen bodies and she still made her way towards the School Garden. It was the only place where no human males could go, cutting down a good fraction of responders. Girls were still partying this night out on Christmas. The district wide announcement wasn’t probably going to be enough. She was smart.

You, you were granted special exemption. It wasn’t that you weren’t male. It was because you were dead. A legal loophole was often the best kind. In fact Anti-Skill was backing off as you approached, Ilija in tow. It was apparent why. She was picking a fight with a group of girls, two of them were Judgement. You recognised them as Uiharu and Shirai. Behind them, more familiar faces were clear, Kongou Mitsuko, and Asuka’s minions. It was clear she wasn’t there specifically there for them. She was there for the package in their arms. It was the shape of a sword that glowed yellow. The green aura’d immortal was trying to make a grab at it. She probably wanted to trade up from the knife in her hands but you didn’t know why. Ladies of Tokiwadai and not, were keeping it out of her grasp.

With current battlefield conditions you’d certainly get the drop on her though it didn’t know if she’d stay down. On the other hand she was fixated on a certain Code M artefact clutched in Saten’s arms. Oh, you almost forgot Saten was present.

You didn’t hesitate to put her down. She was barely paying attention was you came in swinging an uppercut that moved much too fast. The impact registered and you felt her fragile bones give way. In fact, you think you have moved several vertebrae with a force they were not meant to withstand. They looked almost in relief. Shirai, despite her Ability, did not pack a punch and whatever lethal applications of her power could not keep down something that would just get up again. Even now, despite the caved in face and destroyed spine she stood. Slowly, but still, she stood.

The others, with the exception of Ilija had turned green. They were sick. You didn’t pass up the opportunity. Keep pummelling her and maybe she’d finally stay down long enough for her to be contained. Your next shot was barely parried. It bent her arms in ways that arms shouldn’t. The follow up was interrupted by a knife to the chest. You were still wearing your bulletproof suit. Despite it being worth the money, it still didn’t fully stop the blow. The knife bent, turned aside by physics, but so were you. It was that miniscule amount that allowed her to slip your second shot. You were so glad your bowtie stopped the knife from opening up the connection to your head case.

It was the third blow where she turned the tide. Belatedly, CADRE recognised it as some kind of Aikido throw. Right, green glowing immortal, you remembered. She must have had a long and very interesting life if she could negate your sheer brute force. By the time you got up she was still making her way towards that sword. Again she turned her back to you. CADRE advised grappling but you didn’t want to stay in a fight with a martial arts master. Even CADRE agreed.

If she regenerates everything then some excessive force should be fine.

You weren’t averse to attack her from behind. Rather you had to restrain her, both arms and legs. She reacted fast, once more finding yourself face first on the floor. It was just too bad she was trying to break your ankle, the right one. She might as well be using turntable. You simple wrenched her off after a quick kick. Her silent scream did her no good as her arm popped out of its socket. That was how you turned the tables. She was face first, both arms in uncomfortable positions that only got more uncomfortable as you pinned her down with your weight. Even you could hear were the sounds of joints popping in and out of place, bones creaking, and muscles straining. It seemed that she was not capable of violating physics with mere thought a weird ritual. She had yet to stop struggling. Even with you on top of her she just didn’t stop. It was disturbing. Not as much as you were going to cut her heart out for medicinal purposes but still. The blood one her clothes were even ruining your suit.

“Uh, good job VERDICT,” Shirai finally managed.

You didn’t relax your grip, not even daring to speak.

“Well, we don’t have too long to wait,” she continued, “I thought the bulletin was a joke.”

“He’s taking her in,” Ilija spoke in your stead.

“How? The notice excluded us.”

“Actually she’s right,” Uiharu was already bringing it up on her phone, “It’s his jurisdiction, though it doesn’t say why.”

Sadly, your combined weight was too much for Shirai to simply teleport in to a van so she could be fitted with the latest in straightjackets. A question came to mind about how Anti-Skill were not particularly effective but you dismissed it as you accompanied the transport in the back. Ilija accompanied you as well, though without restraints. Now seemed like a good time to,

There were no cameras and microphones either. It was supposed to be sealed almost completely, at least, for this model of Anti-Skill transports. The small ventilation system wouldn’t carry much noise, if at all. Well no time like the present. It didn’t surprise you that Ilija came prepared. It also didn’t surprise you that Ladylee simple resigned herself to her fate. She took it with a certain silent grace that could probably only be matched by an ancient Aztec sacrifice. Cutting to the heart of the matter, Ilija displayed the skill to match an attendant priest. Then she put it in an airtight bag. It was amusing to note that the organ didn’t stop beating. Sadly, the noise wasn’t quite the thump-thump that was so common in movies. At least it did run out of blood to pump. It didn’t need to be said, but you said it anyway,

“So, let’s leave the fact that I’ve stolen her heart just between the two of us. Alright?”

“Anything for you onii-sama,” was her reply amidst the giggling.

Episode End. No interlude tonight for tomorrow I continue.

Hmmm, upgrades. Dark Matter, eat your heart out. Where is Number 2 anyway? When writefag and /tg/ meet, the story begins.

Alright this has been bothering me for a while now, but who the hell is this Ilija chick? She seems to have come out of nowhere and seems to know far more about Kyril than she should.
