You are Ur'shal of the Stonetusk Clan, currently out with a pack trying to stealthily recruit some small clans from under the noses of the deranged Tonguerippers before they can slaughter your potential recruits. While the Tonguerippers themselves haven't noticed you yet, judging by the lack of slavering hordes of berserkers descending on you, your efforts to recruit the Wargrider orcs has not been without complication.

Arriving shortly after sundown, your negotiation with the Wargrider chieftain Ya'zar went well, and he agreed to join the Stonetusks. All you have to do to win his loyalty is ensure that both you and his clan survive the night. You just have to deal with a horde of undead horrors eager to rip you limb from limb, ones which seem to know your name.

The Gaunts advance on the camp at a slow, measured pace, no sounds save the trudging of bare feet on rock and the occasional throaty rattle. Some clutch stone and bone weapons, a few even holding steel, and several have the glinting golden trinkets hanging from their emaciated frames that you saw earlier today. They will be on you soon.

>Ask Ya'zar for any advice on fighting Gaunts
>Organize your pack in preparation for the attack
>Organize your pack and the Wargriders in preparation for the attack

You cannot pick more than one option, there isn't time. If you don't organize anyone, they will organize themselves, your warriors are at least that experienced, but it probably won't be as organized as you doing it yourself.

Not even for a "Weaknesses?" "They're weak to x, y, and z."?
Oh well, I hope we'll at least have time to ask while fighting/before they arrive in earnest.
>Organize your pack and the Wargriders in preparation for the attack
They have a camp, let's use it as a base for now.
Are they coming from one location? If so, spread out a bit in an arc so they can't surround the camp.
Once upon us, try for the head, if it doesn't work we'll figure something out.

Locals can organize themselves and probably know what to do since this isn't their first time.
>>
>>37243748
Modifying this a bit.
Let's have a healthy Wargrider towards the front line if they have any, or tell them to at least shout out their weaknesses or something.
If head doesn't work, then try and cripple, they may be scary undead orcs, but they shouldn't be able to do much without any limbs.
Don't get in close when not necessary, this is the abyss after all.
Tell our orcs to feel them out first, they might be the tricky kind, don't get reckless unless we give them permission.

>>

I have been having some concerns about that, but I neglected to ask because I trust Lordy.
We better not be wearing that damn crown.
Also we are NOT wearing it in a pinch AGAINST THE ABYSS.
I'd be less decisive about this if it was just against some orcs or elves or something, but not when it's the fucking abyss.
Also confirmed to have CONSEQUENCES if worn for too long, how long is not defined, but it was in response to "what would happen if we kept wearing the crown?" "[...] not saying there wouldn't be CONSEQUENCES if you kept wearing it, though.

“Ya'zar, you've fought these things before, how do we kill them?” you growl, your pack and the Wargriders gathering themselves into some semblance of order as the few archers in the Wargrider clan nock their bows and let fly arrows into the advancing enemy.

“They're fast, and stronger than you'd think from those skinny bodies. You want to get inside the chest if you can, or sever the spine, that's where the core is, they'll keep coming even if you take off the limbs or head.”

You grunt in acknowledgement as the arrows strike the Gaunts, most only nicking the emaciated things, though one or two pulp a limb, and one of the Gaunts goes down as the arrow punches through the ribcage.

“Oh, and whatever you do, don't let them bite you,” Ya'zar explains, giving his sword a practice swing as his ancient warg hunches down, ears back, fur spiked up along the back, giving a low growl.

The archers only get time for one more volley, taking down a couple more of the Gaunts, before the first of them reach your warriors. It's hard to count exact numbers, but you'd say there's at least twenty of them, probably more.

“Zul'orok Zhar, make me as Iron, that I may crush the abyssal spawn beneath my boot,” you mutter to yourself, as one of the Gaunts lunges at you with a bone spear, giving a hoarse, rattling cry. It will be hard to close on him while he has the range, and the Gaunt is holding a shield in his off-hand.

You have a dagger about your person, yes.

Honestly I'm considering giving you all the option of a magical one-handed weapon soon (maybe something bastard sword sized so you can switch between one and two handing it), to give you more options in combat, bigass greataxes are cool and all, but they feel kind of limiting to me when writing stuff up.

That does sound awesome, I have to admit.
I'm also fairly sure our great-axe can double as a shield as well.
>>
You wait for the Gaunt to thrust again, ducking to one side and winding up for a big swing. The greataxe arcs through the air with devastating force, but the Gaunt manages to get its shield up just in time, your axe splits the hide shield in two, the force shattering the arm of the Gaunt. The Gaunt staggers back, fragments of shield, shattered bone and scraps of dried flesh crumbling to the ground, but the Gaunt keeps coming. Its withered mouth opens wide, a pale, bloated tongue tipped with a lamprey-like mouth erupting from between cracked teeth, a pair of twitching mandibles tearing through the paper-thin flesh of the creature's cheeks as they burst forth.

It launches itself at you with a clumsy thrust, almost as if baiting you to attack.

You hold your ground, waiting until the Gaunt is almost upon you to knock aside its spear thrust with the flat of your axe. The creature drops the spear, its twitching mandibles outstretched as it lunges in to sink its teeth into your shoulder, only to catch the haft of your axe in its face, sending it crashing back to the ground with a frustrated rattle.

You give the thing no time to regain its balance, bringing the axe up and slamming it down into the Gaunt's chest in a heavy blow, splitting through bone and dessicated organs. A gout of sickly yellowish ooze seeps from the wound, the Gaunt claws at your axe, but you wrench the blade free and it slumps to the ground, the green light fading from its hollow eyes.

You look around you to survey the battle, one of your warriors and two of the Wargriders are dead, but so are several more of the Gaunts. The battle is not going great, considering how much you want to conserve your warriors, but you're certainly winning it.

You spot Ya'zar and his old warg holding back a pair of the Gaunts, acting in perfect unison. For all the clicks and groans of its ancient body, the warg is still a force to be reckoned with, smashing Gaunts to the ground under its bulk, snapping bones and tearing off limbs as Ya'zar goes for the killing blow.

The one issue you're seeing is that your forces and the Wargrider ones are acting independently so far, which is allowing the enemy to separate you into two more managable groups. You could try to organize a combined defense, but that is provided that the Wargriders will listen to a more-or-less unknown commander in the thick of battle.

“To me, close ranks, strike for the chest and let Zul'orok Zhar guide your blades,” you roar, but unfortunately it is only your own warriors to heed the call, starting to close up ranks while the Wargriders continue as before.

You growl, searching for Ya'zar, but he seems too busy fending off Gaunts. He is doing a good job despite his injured arm, but not good enough to issue commands at the same time.

You find yourself alongside Ya'zada as she lays into one of the Gaunts with her axe, reducing the unfortunate creature to a pulp as she batters straight through the limbs to get at the chest.

“The Wargriders are too tired to hold off the Gaunts alone, Ur, we could fight our way over to them if they won't listen, force them to fight alongside us,” she shouts over the din of battle.

You consider her suggestion as you fend off another Gaunt of your own, you could fight over to the Wargriders so that you can fight alongside them, but that would put your own warriors at more risk now that the Gaunts have had time to widen the gap between you.

“Cut a path to the Wargriders,” you roar to your pack, as you start to wade into the Gaunts. It starts out well, pushing back towards your allies, who are being forced further back onto the defensive by the relentless undead.

You hear a roar of pain off to your right, and discover to your horror that another group of Gaunts has emerged from the wastes, hitting your pack's flank just as you started to push your attack. One of your warriors goes down under a flurry of blows from a steel axe, another roaring in pain as a Gaunt latches onto his neck with its tongue, mandibles punching through muscle and flesh.

“Fuck, what now, Ur?” Ya'zada shouts, as your pack suddenly finds itself pressed from two sides.

“Ya'zada, keep pushing towards the Wargriders, I'll hold the flank,” you shout.

Ya'zada shouts back an acknowledgement as you push through to the flank, laying into the Gaunts with your axe. You slice the head from one, bringing the axe down onto its chest as it staggers from the blow. Another lunges at you with a curved blade, and you sever it at the elbow, caving in the ribcage with a couple of well-placed blows. Your warriors rally behind you, quickly turning the tide on the flanking Gaunts, tearing through them with brutal efficiency.

With the flank secured you turn your attention back to the push, progress is slow, the Gaunts putting up a vicious fight as they seek to keep your two groups separated. The Wargriders are slowly being wittled down, and your own force has lost another warrior in the melee. You see Ya'zada slice through a Gaunt, the body falling away from the legs. She goes to finish it off, only for a particularly large Gaunt to step in to attack her, swinging a great spiked flail. Your mate ducks and weaves the thrashing metal, unable to get a solid blow on the creature as it keeps its sturdy shield between her and its body.

She lashes out, her axe tangling with the flail, she wrenches the weapon free of the Gaunt, which gives a frustrated groan. Ya'zada's look of triumph quickly turns to a roar of pain though, as the Gaunt she bisected earlier sinks its jaws into her calf.

The large gaunt pulls a curved dagger from its tattered belt, forcing Ya'zada to defend even as its crawling comrade's mandibles sink into her flesh.

It'll result in an infection of some form.
These zombies had to come from some were, also to note that it'll be a hard time getting any bitten to the shaman before they die.

Most likely we will have to take her leg off if things get dire, Though this would probably crush her spirit.
>>
>>37246414
Ya'zar said don't let it bit you. Not, if it bites you, remove it as quickly as possible. If we take on the big guy, she can remove the smaller one herself.

Depends on the infection.

Abyssal needs a vector, that may be present within the leg and thus removable, or it might be a poison which gets pumped to the heart = game over. But i doubt the later.

If we presume that they have laid some kind of focus/egg in the body via the tongue, then amputation will be viable to save her life. Still not something ide want to do personally, lets hope the warg rider chief is still alive to ask about the bite effects.

1st roll Ur'shal
2nd roll Zo'rok
3rd roll Dru'ak
4th roll Sho'ka
5th roll K'zala

And if its just Ur'shal and Sho'ka then Sho'ka is second. If it's Ur'shal Dru'ak and K'zala then Dru'ak is second and K'zala is third. Make this shit transparent and constant. At least for our own team. No more confusion.

You charge through the ranks of your clanmates, roaring a battlecry as you swing at the large gaunt. The creature reacts quickly, parrying your strike with its shield, following up with a stab at your arm, digging into the flesh as the dagger drives through the links of your chain.

You growl, forcing yourself forward, stepping between Ya'zada and the gaunt even as its dagger twists in the wound.

Able to focus on the crawling Gaunt, Ya'zada quickly knocks it off her leg, reducing its torso to a grizzly mess of yellow bile as she lays into it with her axe, swearing and bellowing at the twitching, mangled thing as it groans pitifully.

Limping forwards, she joins you in your attack on the large Gaunt, as the rest of your orcs continue to push towards the tattered remnants of the Wargriders.

“I fucked up, Ur, but I can still fight” Ya'zada growls, and as you look you see your mate sweating heavily, her skin pale.

“Stay back, Ya'zada, you've been bitten. You'll have your chance to fight, but not today.”

Ya'zada gives a frustrated growl but does as you say, hanging back as your forces push forward. You turn your attention to the large Gaunt, you would swear that the hollow glow in its eyesockets, the twist of its wrinkled mouth, is almost mocking.

It stabs out with its dagger, and you block it on your axe, swinging forward and hammering against the creature's shield. This one has a far sturdier shield than the Gaunts you've fought before though, and while you dent it, the shield holds. You and the creature exchange blow after blow, and while your superior strength and the weight of your axe is pushing it back, the Gaunt has scored a dozen flesh wounds in the process, stabbing and slashing around your defense.

“Stonetusk, what are you doing? We can't hold them much longer,” Ya'zar shouts, and you see that only a few of the Wargriders remain, though the chieftain and his old warg are still standing strong.

One last chance to push through and finish the Gaunts before they overwhelm your potential allies.

You could, if you really wanted to.
But since we don't have descriptions of them, I personally would rather you don't.
Lordy probably has a vision of them, and I'd rather not get something different for him to look at, plus just as with all books, often times illustrations are not as good as one's vision while reading unless instructed or drawn by the author himself.

You have gone through too much in this fight to lose your clanmembers now. Several of your pack are dead, your mate could join them from whatever abyssal poison the Gaunt put into her, this Gaunt is mocking you, and the scar on your cheek WON'T STOP ITCHING.

You bellow out a warcry, cleaving through the Gaunt's arm as it raises its shield to block the downwards blow, carrying on through into its smug, smirking face until you lodge the blade deep in its torso. Planting a boot on its stomach, you pull back, wrenching your axe free in a spray of bile and shattered bone.

Your warriors and the Wargriders surge forwards, inspired by the brutality of the kill, hacking and carving into the remaining Gaunts as they find themselves suddenly subject to a vicious attack from both sides.

The last of the Gaunts dies with a pitiful groan, its torso pulped by a pair of your warriors.

You look around to survey your losses. Five of your pack are dead, and the Wargriders have been reduced to a mere half-dozen warriors, plus their chieftain, he old warg, and a few of the clan's women and children. You have trouble thinking of this as a victory, but you survived.

(cont)
>>
>>What is Ylugri thinking right now, that the coven got enslaved?
>Probably something along the lines of "lol, you got raped by green cock, keep those sacrifices coming cocksleeves".
He only gives that shit so he gets lives in exchange and shit.
Also he was the whole reason the other gods cursed the ogres.
Lordy confirmed he's basically the giants' Satan.
>>
>>37247949
Ya'zar walks up to you, rubbing blood out of his eyes from a new wound across his brow, his old warg limping alongside him, sitting down to dig a spearhead out of its thigh with its teeth.

“I've never seen that many attack at once before. It's like something got them riled up.”

You nod, you think you have an idea who is responsible, but you aren't sure this is the best time to say it.

“There's not much left of us, but a promise is a promise, and you did keep us alive. Chieftain.”

Ya'zar looks around the survivors. “A couple of warriors bitten, not good.”

You frown, eyes flicking to Ya'zada where she stands, skin pale and clammy, swaying a little on her feet.

“What does the bite do?” you grunt.

Ya'zar sighs.

“It's like a fever. It makes you sweat, burn up. If it runs its course, eventually the poor bastard sweats all the water out of their body, and then... well...”

You follow Ya'zar's eyes to the dessicated corpse of a Gaunt lying on the ground nearby.

“Is there anything that can be done?”

Ya'zar shrugs. “It doesn't always kill. I got bitten myself, but the fever broke within a couple of days, the same happened to a couple of other warriors. I can't really remember much about what happened, but I feel like I fought it off somehow. Most don't survive though. Perhaps magic would help, but we have no shaman who could say.”

You scan the horizon, it is still dark, and more Gaunts could be lurking out there, but you have a choice to make.

To be fair, the giant gods are egomaniacs who were mad that Ogre civilization was building greater monuments to Ylugri than the other giant gods were getting built for them in their temple-cities.

Sure, Ylugri's a narcissist and likes capitalizing on the misfortune of others, but he's far from the only dick in that scenario.

“Ya'zar, I want to send most of the warriors back to the camp, then continue on to the Wyrmkillers.”

Ya'zar shrugs. “If you want. It might be dangerous travelling at night in smaller numbers, but if we stay on the move at least the Gaunts won't have a chance to organize another massive force.”

“My warriors can show you the way, get them back safely Ya'zar.”

He nods, his warg giving a huff as it pads away alongside him.

As you consider who to take, Ya'zada steps up next to you, giving you a grin, though it looks weak given her state.

“What now, Ur? On to the Wyrmkillers?”

You shake your head, watching your mate as she sweats, swaying slightly on her feet.

“No, you will go back with the rest of the warriors to the camp. I want Ku'zag to look at you, this sickness could kill you if we leave it alone.”

Ya'zada's face falls. “I can still fight, Ur, it's nothing serious. I've fought off nastier illnesses than this. I can-”

Her voice gives way to a fit of coughing as she doubles over, eye wide.

“Shit, this is such a bad joke. Here I am acting like the great warrior, and all I've done recently is screw up and let you down. I'll go," she wheezes, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand.

You stop Ya'zada as she walks away with a hand on the shoulder.

“Ya'zada, I didn't make you a lieutenant because I wanted to fuck you. I've fought you myself. I know how strong you are, and I know you won't give Or'kug the satisfaction of dying this easily.”

Ya'zada turns to face you, still frowning as you continue.

“Go back to the camp, let Ku'zag heal you. There are many more battles for us to fight.”

Ya'zada sighs, giving you a lopsided grin. “Yeah, you're right, I'm being stupid. I'll see you back at camp, Ur.”

You take your hand off Ya'zada's shoulder and she turns and walks away, stumbling a little as she goes, but catching herself.

You pull Ya'zar aside again, telling him to keep an eye for any that he thinks are about to turn, and he assures you that he'll do what has to be done.

With that, you gather up a group of five of your hardier and least injured packmates, preparing to make for the Wyrmkiller clan. The question is how you want to go about getting there.

The journey is far easier than you expected. There are still plenty of Gaunts out in the wastes, you can hear them, rattles and groans echoing over the rocky landscape, and you can feel them too, the scar on your cheek starting to flare up every time they grow close.

You fight one or two, falling upon lone Gaunts with your warriors, ripping them to shreds before they can react, but for the most part you dodge through the scattered undead, outpacing and outwitting them at every turn.

Eventually you find the Wyrmkiller camp, nestled up against the side of a large rocky outcropping and built into a cave within.

You see few signs of the Wyrmkillers outside of their tents, save for a few sentries.

You walk over to the sentries, who turn to face you, drawing their weapons.

“Identify yourself,” the nearest one roars, loud enough to rouse the rest of the camp, you'd wager.

“I am Ur'shal, chieftain of the Stonetusk Clan, I have come to speak with your chieftain,” you reply, no quieter, you won't be intimidated by some sentry.

“...and is this your clan, chieftain?” a mocking voice echoes out of the cave, a stocky figure emerging from the darkness.

The Wyrmkiller chieftain is an odd one, short for an orc, barely over six foot, but broad shouldered and heavyset. You'd guess, from what Ku'zag told you of halfbreeds, that he's got some dwarf in him, not a full halfbreed, but maybe a generation or two back. His exposed arms are covered in a patchwork of tattoos, scale patterns and strange symbols, more of them marking his cheeks. He tugs at the braided beard hanging from his chin, smirking. More of the wyrmkillers emerge from the cave behind him, and you start to feel a little outnumbered. You do notice though, that for all his bluster, many of the Wyrmkillers are nursing injuries no less severe than the Wargriders had. It seems this clan hasn't avoided the notice of the Gaunts and Tonguerippers either.

Seems your five warriors aren't going to be impressing this chieftain, Ur'shal. What now?

I offer you the same chance to join me, or will you spit in the face of the one orc who could save your clan from the Tonguerippers and their abyssal magics, or from joining the wretched Gaunts?”

The Wyrmkiller chieftain tugs at his beard, giving you a cockeyed look.

“I wonder, Chieftain Ur'shal. Perhaps if your clan is as mighty as you say, I would be better served in slaying you here and claiming it for myself.”

From the smirk on the chieftain's face you can't tell if he's being serious, or just trying to get under your skin, but his warriors are certainly starting to look ready for battle.

>Tell him to try it, if he thinks he can.
>Laugh in his face for thinking your clan would fall into line with him that easily.
>Keep your cool and continue negotiations.

"You could try. Two chieftains have tried, Ogre witches, trolls, deathwurms and even a pair of Abyssal demons have tried.

Yet here I Stand, with a space by my side, or one in front of me."

You'd have to do what I did to best them. Can you have to beat an ogre coven, two chieftains and your second, that is if they don't slaughter you for cowardice out of hand.

This.

Looks like laughing in his face with a hint of "try it" if the winner.
