You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After a friendly round of teasing Karel about her new clothes (as well as trying to get Marianne to try on her old ones), your food was finally brought out and now you are in the midst of DEVOURING it all!

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

"So Karel," Adrien says, turning to her after finishing off his first turkey leg, "what kind of stuff are you into? I know you're supposed to be Emilio's bodyguard, but..."
"My Mom had me take up swords since I was big enough to lift a practice one, so mostly that," Karel replies.
"And that's why she had you posing as a boy for so long?"
"Pretty much," she nods.
"She's the best in all of Marconetti as far as pure swordsmanship goes," Emilio says. "A bunch of Knights entered our tournament too and she -still- beat them handily."
"No kidding?"
"......yeah..." Karel mumbles.

For once it looks like she's embarrassed about something other than that dress she's wearing.

"So that's what you were up to before you ended up as Emilio's bodyguard?" Adrien asks. "Tourney fighting?"
"Pretty much," Karel nods. "The Royal Tournament was my big break, though..."
"Huh, and then you had to quit right afterwards on account of the new job."
"Yeah, but I don't miss it too much," she mumbles. "Castle life was a lot more peaceful, though there's a lot of assholes over in Marconetti."
"Tell me about it," Sir Vincent says with a knowing nod. "I almost beat this one guy half to death for grabbing my wife's ass at one of those fancy parties..."
"Yeah, they do that a lot," she mumbles. "Grabby freaks..."

That's an unpleasantness that you experienced over there as well.

"Wait," Adrien holds up a hand. "So they grabbed -you-?" he points at Karel.
"Mmhmm," she solemnly nods.
"So the person who did it knew that you're a gir-"
"No," she cuts him off.
"............OH."

Yeah, this conversation took an unpleasant turn. Time to change the subject...

I was talking about people correlating Adrien and Raoul after Niklaus falgged up how similar Karel was to Mari, not that Karel was a girl. That was fucking obvious from the word go. As is repeatedly pointed out, her original character image was Saber even if all the in-text hints weren't blatant enough.
>>
>>37213265
She's as close to ordinary while being far from ordinary. Not a princess nor a dragon, but still a noteworthy and capable individual with a nice personality that shows the whole spectrum of emotions (anger, happiness, embarrassment), along with a capacity to fight, an ongoing dream, a kickass family, etc.

If you think of the other girls as sort of specialized routes, Nicolette can be seen as the jack-of-all-trades route. There's a certain strong charm to that.

But that's just my view.

The use of the male Saber picture did tip a few people off. None outside of the fabulous one knew in character though.
>>
>>37213760
Because Celestino wanted the most surefire way to get the sword, and marriage is pretty fucking surefire. Except that it's Monique, whose one true love is the sword that Celestino wants. I recall Monique learning about his would be marriage and saying, "why would I...", which kinda implied (in my own opinion) that he had no interest in Luciana. Add that to the bullshit he would spout off in his POV threads, it's pretty obvious that he has it bad for Setsu.

"I'm also curious about that, little brother!" Thierri says, punching his brother's shoulder from around the corner of the table. "There aren't any more Karels running around that we ought to know about, are there?"

That comment from the King causes Karel to choke on her food a little.

"Travelling all over the place, mostly. Before I came back here, I was doing some bounty work over on the Eastern coast... there's a lot of fugitive Devil Children and Contractors and stuff that sneak over to this continent on freight ships and I was paid to bring them back to justice."
"Playing hero, huh?" Thierri says.
"Kinda, I guess," he shrugs. "The coastal nations' treaties with the Eastern continent are fragile enough without their criminals coming over and causing trouble so I was happy to keep things from getting too bad."

And sometimes they'd have nobles from one country go over to the other on business or whatever... but to keep them from getting hassled by minor regulations that might not exist in their own country, they're exempt from -all- laws."
"So they can do whatever they want?" you ask.
"It's not supposed to be abused, but yeah," he nods. "This is like normal operating procedure over there, so when those countries started doing business with the coastal nations of our continent they expected the same treatment."

"Under the law, yeah," he nods.

"The guys overseas don't want their countries to look bad thanks to the actions of a couple of bad individuals," Adrien says, "so their consulates would occasionally hire guys like me out to take care of certain problem elements when they'd pop up. Other times, the coastal nations themselves would hire me off the books to do the same thing..."
"If both of them had problems with it then why do they keep up that stupid policy?" Valerie asks. "It sounds like it's just asking to be abused by bad people."
"Because they're morons," Thierri replies.
"Pretty much," Adrien sighs.

"So when one of the Consulate guys first came to me with one of these jobs, I was all 'great, I get to take out people who abuse their noble status,' you know? That's the kind of stuff that we had drilled in our heads since birth NOT to do so that was only extra incentive."
"I bet," Thierri nods.
"Thing is, none of the nobles over there are normal humans," Adrien says. "At all."
"What, so it's like the Western coast where there's a bunch of dragons?" Karel asks.
"Dragons, Contractors, their kids..." he sighs, "...they have some kind of stigma against humans ruling over 'higher lifeforms' on that continent so even if you get elevated TO a noble status you end up getting Contracted or turned into a full-blooded Dragon."
"And that's what you had to fight?" Marianne gasps.
"Yup," he nods.

>>
>>37215173

"So that's what I've been up to for the past few years," Adrien says. "Did such a good job at that stuff that one of the Consulates actually offered to have me ennobled overseas and made into a Contractor..." he laughs, "...but you know, it's not like that had any real appeal to me."
"So you turned them down?" Karel asks.

Just as Emilio inserts himself into the conversation, you're alerted by the sound of coughing coming from your right...

"Carina, I thought I told you not to eat too fast!" Luciana says as she pats the coughing girl's back.
"Whoa, what happened?" you ask. "You okay?
"The food tasted so good that I didn't chew enough," Carina says in between coughs.
"You gotta slow down," you sigh. "Remember what I told you on the way down here? The food isn't going anywhere."
"Yeah but it's like really good!" Carina says excitedly. "I usedta only be allowed to usually eat old stuff but this food's all clean and it's not bitter and nobody ate off it first."

It might not have been GOOD food, but at least you always had fresh non-leftover food to eat when you were her age...

"Well if you like it then you ought to eat it slower," you say. "You can't taste it properly if you just inhale it, you know?"

"Elena!" Luciana shouts.
"What!?" Elena shouts back.
"No telling Father about Karel in your letters home, got it?"
"Wha..." her jaw drops. "Why not!? Karel's awesome and she was really a PRINCESS just like me and that makes her even awesomer! There hasn't been a girl swordie who beat everyone back home since Reinhold's grandma was still doing stuff!"
"That might be so, but you need to keep it a secret for now. Understand?"
"...yeah..." she mumbles.

Though it looks like she's going to as she's told, Elena does not in any way look happy about it. Karel, on the other hand, breathes a sigh of relief.

Or being civil and polite people. Seriously, I've spoken to French people who actually chose to study aboard to get away from OTHER French people being obnoxious, judgemental pricks about their decisions. One girl said she got so much shit for dying her hair an off-colour that it bordered on bullying.

Also, the French live right next door to Britain, and yet your average Frenchman will barely speak a word of English, because they think it's beneath them to do so, and they have such a disdainful view on the British. Hell, if you try to speak to them in any other language than French (even if to simply explain that you can't speak French well enough), a lot of them will treat you like some rude savage who doesn't belong in their great country.

My French teacher who spent ten years living there told us this, even. He also explained to us that the key to getting the French to tolerate you is to tell them you don't speak French. In French. Because it appeases them.

The French are jerks, in short.

Still, though... you get a day off! After how stupidly long today's been, being able to do whatever the hell you want for the entire day sounds like HEAVEN. You can goof off with your friends, maybe stop by Sir Gregory's place or visit Citrine early...

"I bet you're happy that you'll get to spend some time with your new little buddy there, huh," Thierri says.
"That and I'll be able to maybe see my grandmother earlier than I thought," you reply.

Once the meal is finished and the various conversations between the people at the table have ended, you and the others all get up from the table and gather into your various groups- VSir Vincent and his daughters, Nicolette, her female cousins and their bodyguards, Emilio and Karel, the King, Marianne and Adrien...

You're a bit disappointed that Luciana's group is the first to leave (though you do make sure to get a goodnight kiss in before she goes), but you figure that Nicolette probably wants to hurry back home to see her mother after everything that she's been through today. Sir Vincent, on the other hand, lingers for a bit longer. Getting to see his other best friend again after so long really has him in a good mood...

...his daughters aren't nearly as interested in Adrien's reappearance, though.

"Hey, Sylvie," you say, motioning for Carina to follow you over to your friend.
"Hi," Sylvie says with a weak smile. "Some day, huh."
"Seriously," you sigh. "How are you holding up?"
"Well it's not the first time I've almost been killed so I'm a lot less freaked out than you'd expect," she laughs. "What about you? Decided what you're going to do with Carina yet? You and Luciana looked kind of... parenty at dinner, so..."

"By the way," you say, "I wanted to ask you about something."

"Do you think you could maybe find me another of those scrolls that you used when you first started teaching me magic? Spirit... something..."
"Spirit Field?"
"Yeah, that's it," you snap your fingers.
"The armory's full of them," she replies, "but what for?"
"I wanted to find out what Carina's magical affinity is."
"Uh..."

Sylvie's looking at you with total bewilderment.

"......she said that she can't even read," Sylvie says, "so why are you trying to get her to learn magic right now?"

"...oh."
"I know you're probably thinking that you want her to fly around like Elena or something but Elena's had the best tutors since she was able to walk and a father who's every bit as good as magic as Aunt Ariane is."

So much for that.

"...but I -can- get you a scroll so you can see what type she is at least," Sylvie says, relenting when she sees the look of disappointment on your face. "That's the best I can do as far as magic goes, though."
"Thanks," you reply.

And with that, you take Carina's hand as you lead her down the hallway and up the long stairwell to your room. You notice her starting to get short of breath about a third of the way, so you lift her into your arms and carry her all the way to to the top floor.

Carina has the same reaction to seeing your room for the first time as you did- pure wonder and amazement at the sheer amount of space that you have. While the little girl explores the vastness of your abode, you notice something lying on your bed...

...a long nightshirt, just the right size for Carina to wear. Melanie must have left it here while you were out.

"Wow!" Carina shouts. "Your bathroom's even bigger than Melanie's!"

While Carina gets settled into the wonders of an actual comfortable bed, you walk over to your desk and bring out your art supplies. Seeing as how today's been a pretty eventful day, and you figure that it'd be a good idea to unwind by drawing a picture or two.

Probably the most memorable image of the day is Karel in that dress that Melanie forced her into. She looked really cute in it, and you feel a pang of sadness when you realize that you're unlikely to ever see her in it again. But hey, that's all the more reason to immortalize it onto paper!

skritch skritch

The image is so strong in your mind, it flawlessly transfers through your hand and onto the paper!

...well, -almost- perfectly. You're still pretty happy with the results though, and you make a mental note to show this to someone tomorrow... like Karel herself.

Yeah, her reaction would be fun to see.

Emilio too, you're sure that he wouldn't mind seeing it. Though you're not sure if he really shares Karel's feelings or if he's just in slight shock that an actual girl likes him for who he is, he seemed pretty pleased by the way that she looked today.

Once you're done with that one, you find that the soul of an artist within you is still not done for the night... and so, you sketch a random thing from your imagination.

Marianne...

...wearing Karel's usual bodyguard uniform.

She's sure to hit you if you actually show this picture to her, but you're still REALLY tempted to do so anyways.

With that masterpiece finished, you find yourself done arting for the night. And so, you unhook your sword from your belt and place it onto the wall beside your bed before ducking into the bathroom to take the rest of your uniform off.

Gotta keep it proper after all.

After placing your uniform on your chair, you slide into your side of the bed and pass right the hell out since today was more exhausting than anything you've dealt with in QUITE some time.

And with that, day 65 of Princess Guard quest finally ends at 21 threads. Hope you guys enjoyed the long ride, guys.

The next thread will be on Wednesday night, I think I'll be running False Dendrite though I'm ont 100% sure.

and now question taking time

Thanks for running, arch.

Night arch thanks for the thread.

After today's events, what is the relative level of violence held in the hearts for the woman in the following: 1) Angelique towards Adrien; 2) Arianne towards Gregory; 3) Arianne towards Adrien; 4) Karel towards Reinhold; 5) Marianne towards Reinhold.
>>
>>37218180
Thanks arch

How's the artist search going?
>>
>>37218180
Thanks for running arch

I am guessing that shit is about to go down if you expect to finish the quest in 2 months. Rough estimate on the number of casualties by the end?
Taka has like a million deathflags and he hasn't been in spotlight much lately, so I am sensing a heroic sacrifice coming soon
>>
>>37218180
Are we getting the ara ara chewing out Gregory interlude? Please say yes
>>
>>37218180
Dumb question but Luciana is pronounced with a 'ch' sound and not an 's' sound right?
>>
>>37218180
Thanks for the thread, OP!
>>
>>37218222
No. If it was a 'ch' then it'd be 'Lucciana'. It's 'Lucy-ana'.
>>
>>37218180
So what would Karel's daughter be like?
Saber of Red?
Or god forbid,Nero.

But isn't it based on the Italian word for light, luce, which has a 'ch' sound?

>After today's events, what is the relative level of violence held in the hearts for the woman in the following:
>1) Angelique towards Adrien;
Vincent brought him back to his place to surprise Angelique. She was happy to see him.. .and then Vincent told her about Karel and he got beat up pretty badly.

>2) Arianne towards Gregory;
She gave him quite the verbal beating, though she understands why he lost his cool.

>3) Arianne towards Adrien;
Scary smile that makes you think that you're going to be brutally murdered-level.

>4) Karel towards Reinhold;
She's kind of mad in general, but understands that this particular incident isn't entirely Reinhold's fault.
she'd still feel a bit better if she could give him a punch or three though

>5) Marianne towards Reinhold.
None.

>>37218205
>How's the artist search going?
Just worked out the rates with the artist that I was talking to a few days ago, actually.
Now all that's left is to ask if he's able to draw guys too.

>>37218212
>I am guessing that shit is about to go down if you expect to finish the quest in 2 months. Rough estimate on the number of casualties by the end?
that's entirely up to you guys

>>37218220

nope, sorry.

>>37218222
>Dumb question but Luciana is pronounced with a 'ch' sound and not an 's' sound right?
"S" sound.

>>37218256
A mystery that shall as yet remain unseen.

>>37218273
>Figured out what to call a ponytail in PGQ yet?
No, and it is a specter that continues to haunt me.

And now it is time for a turtle to sleep. Thanks for playing!

I'll be honest I'm a bit saddened by this.

Reinhold Jr. is Citrine's son.
There's no blood relation.
