You nod to them as you walk in the building, tracing the steps inside to Ice's office.

The outer office, where her borrowed secretaries used to sit, is now occupied by a lone Airman, sitting behind the desk and apparently trying to make sense of the old filing system. “Mornin, sir.” He says.

I'm not sure why people are assuming that we'll be taking another trip to Siberia if we go for the implant. The US has doctors capable of this kind of surgery, they've had more than one example of the implant to look at in use, and the people Brigitte bagged were probably involved in the project's implementation as well.

That's what the US did during WW2, aye. That gave them a huge advantage over the Japs and the Germans, that they were able to replace their losses with well trained recruits. However, this is slightly different. This is a modern war. There is not enough wartime production to warrant sending someone this good(mostly because of some unknown talent that is probably not replicable by any more than a handful) over other (more conventional) aces.

You laugh, leaving the office and closing the door behind you and heading out of the office. Reflecting on it, you know, Joe really isn't doing so bad, but you haven't talked to him in a while. Either way, you figure Slider's maybe half-right, at least about the first part.

You head down to the Hangar, figuring that Ice'll be down there if she's not up in her office. Your intuition turns out to be correct- she's by her striker racks, working with the ground crew on the heavily modified YF-23 units.

“Heya boss.” You greet, walking forward. She half-turns and nods at you.

“Hey Frank.” She says, wiping her hands off on a rag. “What brings you down here?”

“Looking for you.” You say. “Mind chatting for a bit?”

Ice shrugs. “I don't know, and she wouldn't tell. We're still stuck with Davis for the time being, but worst case, I can farm her out to the 3rd and let Colonel Wilkins get her some flight time.” She says.

“It still leaves us overstrength.” You point out.

“Yeah, but if it's Longstreet driving this kind of shit, that doesn't matter.” Ice says. “She's got the ear of a lot of people with pull, but she doesn't have too much herself where the active duty force is concerned, status at Annapolis or not.”

She nods again, cutting a piece of ham. “So I hear. But their definition of acceptable risk and ours are two totally different things.”

“Yeah, sure. But it was being worked with.” you say. “And Merlin thinks it might reduce how hard I have to push up there.”

Ice pauses. “Does she?”

“That's what she says.” You respond. “But at the same time, yeah, it could, but it could also give us a hell of a boost when we do have to go hard, you know?”

“I think,” You say, opening the doors for her as you leave the chow hall. “You're one of the only people I know of who think of hard physical labor as a break.”

She laughs, waving as the two of you go different directions- You head towards the rec center, while Ice heads back for the flightline.

The base rec center isn't that bad- a couple pool tables, a large TV, some arcade games. Along the back sits a piano, with Katya at the keys. She's not playing, just kind of sitting there- the room is otherwise empty.

“How is it there's a piano at every place we've ever gone?” You ask, causing her to start and twist to look at you. You grin at her. “Seems like a hell of a thing to ship around.”

She shrugs. “It is a thing among witches.” She says. “What brings you to me now, Frank? It is somewhat early to be alone togther, yes?”

You laugh. “Anytime, anyplace.” You respond. “And no, I was looking for an opinon.”

“Ah, this I can help you with. What of?” She asks.

“VDNI.” You say, taking a seat nearby. “Merlin thinks she and I should get it.”

“Hmm.” Katya says, standing and taking a seat nearby. “What are you thinking about that?”

You shrug. “I'm not sure.” You say. “Slider's against it, Ice seems to be undecided. There's a lot of risk, especially since we don't really know what would have been acceptable risk for the guys that made it.”

She nods. “Ah, yes.” She smiles. “The western impression that Soviet engineering is dangerous and flawed?”

“Kinda.” You say. “I can't imagine it'd be lethal or anything, but-”

She shakes her head. “No, it would not be. At least not and still be accepted. But it may be dangerous.” She looks at you. “Pilots are expensive, even more than witches.” She says. “We must be trained, but it is much simpler and shorter to do so. A pilot, they are expensive, and a good pilot, like yourself, that is talent that cannot be trained.”

“But what's that got to do with VDNI?” You ask.

“You are not seeing it?” She says. “Nothing like this VDNI would be developed for mass use, yet. It is for the closest thing they have to you and little Samantha. Pilots they cannot afford to waste with poorly engineered and unsafe systems.”

“So it probably wouldn't kill me.” You say.

She shakes her head. “Or physically harm you, especially if it has been modified by western hands or with western oversight. Safety is often a concern enough to burden a system down to where it is no longer working or effective, it seems.” She says.

“I sense a but in there somewhere.” You say. She nods.

“Of course. There is a risk with any technology, especially such as this. Tell me, how do you think it works? One pilot, one machine, they are one being with this system, no?” She asks.

You shrug- as you understand it, that's a close enough description.

“But what will happen with two operators in the same machine?” She asks, then shrugs. “I do not know, and I doubt anyone else will either. That is the risk as I see it.”

“Do you think it's worth the risk?” You ask. She shrugs again.

“I am not certain.” She says. “It could allow you an amazing edge in combat, one that perhaps does not require you to hurt yourself as you do every time. It could also give you nothing you could not already achieve and take from you the man that you are. I would not enjoy that, no one else would either, I am thinking.” She says. “In the end it is your decision. I do not know if I would take it, but I will not think differently of you if you do.”

You nod. “Thanks Katya.”

She shrugs. “For giving my opinion?” She asks. “We should talk more often, you would not be wanting them so much then, I am thinking. I have many.”

“We'll see.” You say, grinning as you stand up. “So were you going to play?”

She nods. “I had planned to. Perhaps you would like to hear it? My grandmother taught me the song. I am told her father composed it.”

“Sure.” You nod, twisting around to watch her as she walks to the piano and sits down at the bench.

You've heard the song before, you're sure, though you can't place it. It's peaceful, though- you find yourself enjoying it pretty quickly, even though Piano music isn't really your thing.

The end is drowned out by the roar of multiple high-bypass turbofans- the big ones they stick on cargo jets. You and Katya both go over to the windows to see multiple C-33s in the pattern, landing one by one at the strip.

“Air supply?” You ask.

She nods. “Torun north is the major transportation hub.” She says. “But we are close enough that we can be used for overflow flights. I am thinking some of those are for us.”

“Maybe. This is the military we're dealing with.” you say. “Our stuff probably landed at Torun North.”

She laughs. “This thing, it is common everywhere.”

Well, you think. That makes you feel somewhat better. At least the reds have the same problem with supply being strange and arcane as you do.
