/tg/ - Traditional Games

So, 7 days to die is addictive as hell. I'm going to have to watch that, hahaha. Kinda cut into time I'd have otherwise used writing last night, though I should still have the next chapter of Raikov done this weekend. Hopefully.

“Sir Bishop!” Wendy says as you head downstairs, feeling about like the walking dead and probably looking like one as well. You yawn at her.

“What did I say about calling me that?” You ask. She grins at you.

“Alyssa and Clarissa were quite clear, sir. I am to call you that at all times.” She says, grinning. “Would you like breakfast?”

“In a minute.” You grumble. “Coffee first.”

“I'll get that for you.” She says, heading for the kitchen.

You'd respond, but you're interrupted by Merlin, who gives you a quick hug as she descends the stairs and then squeezes past you. “M-morning, Frank.” She says as she does. “H-have you seen Kimiko? I-I wanted to talk to her.”

You shake your head- after all, you just woke up yourself.

You'd reported in to Ice when you got back- she'd greeted you and asked you how it went, and even returned the smile when you told her that was classified. Of course, the joking had died off when she'd said that Davis was due in today, and that nothing had come through, yet, that would allow her to deny detaching Merlin, and that if Brigitte didn't come through, she realistically didn't have any options.

The front has been quiet, at least from your standpoint- other than the occasional raid, there's been almost no air threat, though the Soviet military maintains powerful- and numerous- AA defenses with it's units, with just about everything in the book out there. It's made the front almost a no-fly zone for anything other than specialized SEAD aircraft, and has made the majority of the work fall on the allied armies.

1/2
>>
Even the fandances have dropped off- their last sighting, according to her, was a little over a week ago, where they ambushed a four-witch patrol, wounding two, and then disappeared again when reinforcements showed up.

Allied command seems to think that it's a result of the horrific losses they took in the attack on Berlin- analysts are still piecing together the damage, but according to them, something like 40%+ of the Soviet air force on this front was either damaged beyond repair or lost in the huge air battle there. While the allied nations took losses as well, the heavy air defenses of Berlin claimed a hell of a price from the attackers. Interviews with POWs seems to indicate they weren't told the defenses near the city would be so heavy, which partly explains it.

She hadn't indicated that she had anything for you- honestly, right now, there really isn't much. The SEAD birds out of various bases, including Torun north, are flying almost nonstop, and you've already heard rumors of a plan to open up the front to strike packages and more CAS aircraft, but nothing that involves you, yet.

Wendy returns with a pair of cups of fresh, hot coffee, handing one to you and the other to Merlin. Merlin sips hers, then nods. “T-Thanks Wendy. It's g-good.”

Wendy nods and smiles. “Is there anything else?” She asks.

“H-have you seen K-kimiko?” Merlin says, still holding her coffee close enough to her face that it fogs part of her glasses.

Wendy shakes her head. “Afraid not. Do you want me to look for her?”

“N-no, that's ok. I-I can go. D-do you want to come with, Frank?”

[x] I need to talk with Ice first, sorry Merlin.

You shake your head. “I need to talk with Ice first, sorry Merlin.”

She nods. “It's O-ok. We'll probably be h-here if you need me though.”

“Sounds good.” You say, standing up and heading back upstairs to actually put on clothes- you suspect showing up to Ice's office in a robe and your skivvies would be frowned upon, regardless of the dress code of your squadronmates.

So dressed, you head over to the Admin building, noting the changes around the base. With the shift of the Polish and German units here to another base, their air defense troops have similarly left, and the US Army has stepped in to fill the gap. A partiot battery has taken up residence nearby, and a pair of towed 20mm vulcans are parked in sandbagged emplacements near the admin compound, their crews lounging against them.

You nod to them as you walk in the building, tracing the steps inside to Ice's office.

The outer office, where her borrowed secretaries used to sit, is now occupied by a lone Airman, sitting behind the desk and apparently trying to make sense of the old filing system. “Mornin, sir.” He says.

“Morning.” you respond. “You get assigned to us?”

He nods. “Temporary thing, I guess you're supposed to be getting office staff of your own soon.” He says. “The commander's out right now, though, if you need to see her.”

“I did.” You say, “but it's not major. Yet. Any idea where she is?”

He shakes his head. “No sir, but Lieutenant commander Kerner's in her office, if you wanna ask her.”

[] yeah, I'll do that. Thanks.
[] Ah, she's probably down on the flightline, I'll go look for her there.

[x] yeah, I'll do that. Thanks.

You nod, knocking on Slider's door. “Yeah, I'll do just that. Thanks.”

He nods as you step into the XO's office- to find her actually sitting at her desk, handling some paperwork of her own.

“Close that hatch.” She says without looking up. “I got a reputation to keep.”

You laugh, closing it and taking a seat in one of the chairs on the other side of the desk.

She sets down her pen and looks up at you. “And that means you keep your damn mouth shut. You saw nothing, you hear me?”

You grin, but nod. “I saw absolutely nothing.”

“Good.” She says. “I'm glad we agree. So what's up.”

You shrug. “Been gone for a while, trying to get caught up.”

She shoves a three ring binder at you. “There's the intel reports, you can read 'em yourself.”

You laugh. “Anything new here?”

She shakes her head. “Not really. The air force pukes are alright, for air force pukes. That colonel's mellowed, guess she just needed a lay.” She pauses. “She needed it bad. Jesus.”

You laugh as she continues.

“Other than that? Eh, same shit. We've been mounting BARCAPs with the other units in the AO, but the front is almost purely a ground show. Can't get CAS in to support, they've got too much shit on the other side of the line, and the new SA-20s they're fielding are fucking lethal.” She pauses. “To everyone. The Polish lost a girl to them a couple days ago.”

“Ouch.” You say- losses hurt anywhere, but in the close-knit witch community, it's even more so.

She nods. “Yeah, it's why only SEAD aircraft and witches are allowed up that far right now. So what's new with you?”

You grin and are about to say something about you having to kill her after telling her but she cuts you off.

“And don't gimme that it's classified shit.” She warns. “Just tell me the important shit.”

>>37208148
>Does Frank really need another potential complication when his talents aren't 100% figured out?

That's the key question there.
>>
I'm not sure why people are assuming that we'll be taking another trip to Siberia if we go for the implant. The US has doctors capable of this kind of surgery, they've had more than one example of the implant to look at in use, and the people Brigitte bagged were probably involved in the project's implementation as well.

My biggest concern remains the gnomery and the 'safely eject hardware and eject media' time
>>
>>37207931
I'm of the opinion that we're already such an asset, any down time for us is not very good. Better to let other pilots raise up to our level while we stay in the field.

If we are going to get the implants now would be the best time since the war is currently a ground war with very limited air power do to the amount of AA the Russians are using.

That's what the US did during WW2, aye. That gave them a huge advantage over the Japs and the Germans, that they were able to replace their losses with well trained recruits. However, this is slightly different. This is a modern war. There is not enough wartime production to warrant sending someone this good(mostly because of some unknown talent that is probably not replicable by any more than a handful) over other (more conventional) aces.

She chokes briefly, then looks at you. “Asshat. One problem at a time. Merlin wants VDNI?”

“No,” you correct “She wants both of us to get it.”

Slider shakes her head. “I don't know shit about it, other than whats in there” She points at the intel binder. “Seems risky though.”

You shrug. “Hard to say, there's no testing I know of on this side. The little bit we've seen of it is pretty damn impressive-”

“But we don't know what kind of risks there are.” Slider says. “Besides, aren't you good enough? This seems like a waste.”

“Every bit counts.” You point out, and she nods. “And- well, like I said. We saw what it let someone do and it was-”

“Like that matters.” Slider responds. “You can already do impressive shit, Frank. You don't need it.”

“I'm just putting forward what we know.” You say, shrugging. “I'm on the fence, myself.”

“Frank, you know what Sam's like with new tech. She loves it, all of it. Something like this? Shit yeah she wants it. Kids a whatsit. Technophile in the biggest way. But we don't know the risks, we don't know how long you'd be down re-learning everything with this in you and-” She shakes her head. “I don't agree with her at all.”

“Like I said, I'm on the fence.” you say again. “It's not like we need to decide soon anyway, we've got some time.”

She snorts. “Yeah, as long as they don't open up the Soviet AA enough to let in strike packages.” She says. “I'm not gonna hammer this into the ground with you, you get that I'm against it. Now what's this with your sister?”

You laugh. “Nothing, we saw her a bit while we were waiting for transport back here. She said hi.”

“That's probably not all she said.” Slider says. “But I'll let it go. Now, you got anything else for me, or are you just gonna sit here and stare? I mean, there's a closet right over there-”

[x] As much as I'd like to, I need to go find the boss.

You grin. “As much as I'd like to, I need to go find the boss.” You say, standing up.

She shakes her head. “That's another thing. You two don't sort yourselves out, I swear to god I'll spank you both.”

“Promises.” You respond, grinning at her.

“Yeah, you say that.” She says. “Every dude ever does. Hurr hurr what's better than screwing one witch? Screwing two!”

She looks at you. “Go ask Joe how that's working out for him.”

You pause at that. “Message received and understood.” you say, putting a hand on the doorknob, and grinning back. “But that doesn't mean I damn sure wouldn't try. You and Ice, huh?”

“Not even you, Frank. Not even you.” She says. “Now git. I have shit to do.”

You laugh, leaving the office and closing the door behind you and heading out of the office. Reflecting on it, you know, Joe really isn't doing so bad, but you haven't talked to him in a while. Either way, you figure Slider's maybe half-right, at least about the first part.

You head down to the Hangar, figuring that Ice'll be down there if she's not up in her office. Your intuition turns out to be correct- she's by her striker racks, working with the ground crew on the heavily modified YF-23 units.

“Heya boss.” You greet, walking forward. She half-turns and nods at you.

“Hey Frank.” She says, wiping her hands off on a rag. “What brings you down here?”

“Looking for you.” You say. “Mind chatting for a bit?”

“Not really. What about?”

[] Merlin wants VDNI. What do you think?
[] Has Brigitte come through for us yet?
[] What's the deal with Davis?
>>
>>37209724
NATO didn't really put a ton of work into SAMs. They had the advantage in fighters. The Soviet doctrine knew that, and Soviet formations relied on heavy SAM and AAA forces to cover them, while NATO formations relied on friendly air units. That and the fact that the US couldn't into AAA.

Same sort of thing at sea. US had the edge in carriers, so Soviet naval forces relied on AShMs and SAMs, knowing that their naval air wings would lose to a US carrier air wing.

That and Khrushchev was obsessed with missiles, so the Soviets pretty much abandoned tube artillery for missiles, so they had an advantage in missile guidance.

“Has Brigitte come through for us yet?” You ask.

She looks around. “Yeah, kinda. C'mon, let's go somewhere a little quieter.”

She turns and leads you out of the hangar, heading towards the base chow hall- it's open all hours, staffed by civilian contractors. “So, it's not something that blocks the orders per se.” She says, as you walk. “But they've been withdrawn.”

“How the hell did she do that?” You ask. “I mean-”

Ice shrugs. “I don't know, and she wouldn't tell. We're still stuck with Davis for the time being, but worst case, I can farm her out to the 3rd and let Colonel Wilkins get her some flight time.” She says.

“It still leaves us overstrength.” You point out.

“Yeah, but if it's Longstreet driving this kind of shit, that doesn't matter.” Ice says. “She's got the ear of a lot of people with pull, but she doesn't have too much herself where the active duty force is concerned, status at Annapolis or not.”

“Why's that?” You ask.

“Ah. So she's playing dirty politics too?” You ask. “I never took her for the type.”

“Brigitte doesn't mess around.” Ice points out. “Speaking of, how did it go out there?”

“About as well as we expected. Can't really say more than that, sorry.” You say. She looks back at you.

“You know my security clearance is much higher than yours, right?” She asks.

You nod. “And you know that kind of thing is completely compartmentalized?” You respond with a grin.

She laughs. “Yeah, good point. So it went well, that's good.” She says, opening the outer doors and holding them for you- you return the gesture with the inner set. “So, anything else I need to know?” She asks, getting in line- you pull a tray too, having not had morning chow yet.

[x] Merlin's big into this VDNI thing, kinda looking for other opinions.

“Well,” you say, taking a plate of ham and eggs- then motioning for some more scrambled eggs to be added to it- “Merlin's big into this VDNI thing, and I was kind of looking for some more opinions on it. I talked to Slider and she was pretty against it.”

Ice nods. “Yeah, I can see that. I don't really know, Frank.” She says, picking out a corner table and sitting down. “I mean, there's a lot of supposed advantages, but the health risks are totally unknown.”

“Could be nothing.” You say, remembering how normal and healthy Laika was, or seemed to be.

Ice nods. “Could be. Could also do all kinds of things to you that we don't know yet. And we've never tested it with two people in the same aircraft before, either.”

You shrug. “The reds were working with that, though.”

She nods again, cutting a piece of ham. “So I hear. But their definition of acceptable risk and ours are two totally different things.”

“Yeah, sure. But it was being worked with.” you say. “And Merlin thinks it might reduce how hard I have to push up there.”

Ice pauses. “Does she?”

“That's what she says.” You respond. “But at the same time, yeah, it could, but it could also give us a hell of a boost when we do have to go hard, you know?”

Ice chews her lip. “I know what you mean, yes.” She eventually says.

“What's wrong?” You ask. “If she's right-”

She nods. “I know. But what if she's not?”

“It's Merlin.” You respond. “When is she wrong about tech? Shit, you use stuff she designed-”

“So do you.” Ice says.

“My point exactly. Kid's a genius when it comes to this sort of stuff, shouldn't we trust her?”

Ice looks conflicted about it. “I'm not sure.” She finally says.

“Why?” You ask.

>>
“Don't get me wrong, I agree. She's nothing short of a genius with technology. But she also always skews things. Like her strikers.” She says. “Magically, they're the easiest thing I've ever used. But they're hard to learn because of all the tech she crammed into them. ECM? Since when did witches have that? Missiles?” She shakes her head.

“Part of the reason I haven't asked for more is how complex they are.” She says. “She doesn't always think about other people- have you seen her seat in the Wyvern? I don't even know if Davis could have operated it.”

“So you think she's misrepresenting it?” You ask.

She shakes her head. “No, I think she's just letting how she is color her opinion. She doesn't see a risk because it's technology, she thinks if there's trouble, she can handle it.” She takes a drink of coffee. “Maybe she can, but is it worth the risk? I don't know, Frank.”

“That's about where I'm at, too.” You say, nodding and finishing the last of your eggs. “They weren't as good as yours.”

“Wha- oh.” Ice laughs. “I haven't made eggs in a while, have I?”

“Nope. You ought to fix that.” You say, grinning. “Here, lemme get your tray.”

She nods and hands it to you. “So what are you going to do now?”

Frank, do you honestly think your body can survive going any harder then it already can?

I'd be shocked if her mom could get more info as I doubt Putin's faction has any part currently in the VDNI program Ivan is running.

>[X] I might go talk to Katya about it, see what she says.

She might be more familiar with Russian safety standards.
>>
>>37211768
Why not? They have cybernetics tech out the wazoo; stands to reason they'd at the very least have a finger in the VDNI pie.
>>
>>37211781
>Russian safety standards.
What's that?
>>
>>37211768

If Putin and friends have enough pull to requisition entire divisions of Russia's best (including goddamn Vampyrs) and possess cutting edge cybernetics then they have enough political muscle to at least have a finger in the pie.

At least, knowing Putin, he will already sniffing around on this VDNI. They might get better data than us too.

I love that song
>>
>>37211791
>>37211825
Pre-War maybe but at this stage of the war they aren't exactly on speaking terms, Stalin likely has the VDNI program solely in the hands of his people. Hell the people the SEAL's grabbed are probably more knowledgeable about it then one of Putin's people.
>>
>>37211833
Fucking saved! My sides are in orbit!
>>
>>37211929
That's entirely speculation on your part, though.
>>
>>37212052
So is Merlin's claims that the VDNI will be just fine.
>>
>>37212074
Merlin's are founded on a detailed in-universe understanding of things. Yours aren't.

Though frankly that's a farcical comparison to be making in the first place, really.
>>
>>37211791
Because it's not part of their mission. The whole point of all the augs at Megalith is to make crippled witches combat ready for Martian War II: Alium Boogaloo, why would they take part in steelwing R&D?
>>
>>37212034
that song will fit Merlin in the future but in a good way
>>
>>37212052
I'm going by the fact that Stalin was a paranoid as hell and that he knows someone is holding fresh troops back for something, so why wouldn't he take the major program that'll make a difference in the war and make sure it's only people he can trust? Why wouldn't he lock the program the fuck down?
>>
>>37212144
and after what went down you just KNOW people got purged hard!
>>
>>37212108
Detailed in-universe understanding colored by her personality flaws that make her lean more towards technology than the human side of the problem.
>>
>>37212127
Because they *had* steelwings. Remember Putin mentioned that the augs he was offering fronk were for their "best pilot" before he flipped to Stalin's side?
>>
>>37212383
And yet she still has a more balanced understanding of the overall situation than you do.
>>

[x] I might go talk to Katya about it, see what she says.

You shrug. “I might go talk to Katya, see what she has to say.”

Ice nods. “Fair enough. And if anyone's going to know about the Soviet convept of acceptable risk, it'll be her.”

You grin. “Among other things she'll probably have to say on the matter.”

Ice laughs. “Yeah, I'm sure. Well, ok Frank. If you need me, I'll be in the hangar most of the day. I'm sure the paperwork is piling up, but I needed a break.”

“I think,” You say, opening the doors for her as you leave the chow hall. “You're one of the only people I know of who think of hard physical labor as a break.”

She laughs, waving as the two of you go different directions- You head towards the rec center, while Ice heads back for the flightline.

The base rec center isn't that bad- a couple pool tables, a large TV, some arcade games. Along the back sits a piano, with Katya at the keys. She's not playing, just kind of sitting there- the room is otherwise empty.

“How is it there's a piano at every place we've ever gone?” You ask, causing her to start and twist to look at you. You grin at her. “Seems like a hell of a thing to ship around.”

She shrugs. “It is a thing among witches.” She says. “What brings you to me now, Frank? It is somewhat early to be alone togther, yes?”

You laugh. “Anytime, anyplace.” You respond. “And no, I was looking for an opinon.”

“Ah, this I can help you with. What of?” She asks.

“VDNI.” You say, taking a seat nearby. “Merlin thinks she and I should get it.”

“Hmm.” Katya says, standing and taking a seat nearby. “What are you thinking about that?”

You shrug. “I'm not sure.” You say. “Slider's against it, Ice seems to be undecided. There's a lot of risk, especially since we don't really know what would have been acceptable risk for the guys that made it.”

>>
She nods. “Ah, yes.” She smiles. “The western impression that Soviet engineering is dangerous and flawed?”

“Kinda.” You say. “I can't imagine it'd be lethal or anything, but-”

She shakes her head. “No, it would not be. At least not and still be accepted. But it may be dangerous.” She looks at you. “Pilots are expensive, even more than witches.” She says. “We must be trained, but it is much simpler and shorter to do so. A pilot, they are expensive, and a good pilot, like yourself, that is talent that cannot be trained.”

“But what's that got to do with VDNI?” You ask.

“You are not seeing it?” She says. “Nothing like this VDNI would be developed for mass use, yet. It is for the closest thing they have to you and little Samantha. Pilots they cannot afford to waste with poorly engineered and unsafe systems.”

“So it probably wouldn't kill me.” You say.

She shakes her head. “Or physically harm you, especially if it has been modified by western hands or with western oversight. Safety is often a concern enough to burden a system down to where it is no longer working or effective, it seems.” She says.

“I sense a but in there somewhere.” You say. She nods.

“Of course. There is a risk with any technology, especially such as this. Tell me, how do you think it works? One pilot, one machine, they are one being with this system, no?” She asks.

You shrug- as you understand it, that's a close enough description.

“But what will happen with two operators in the same machine?” She asks, then shrugs. “I do not know, and I doubt anyone else will either. That is the risk as I see it.”

“Do you think it's worth the risk?” You ask. She shrugs again.

>>
“I am not certain.” She says. “It could allow you an amazing edge in combat, one that perhaps does not require you to hurt yourself as you do every time. It could also give you nothing you could not already achieve and take from you the man that you are. I would not enjoy that, no one else would either, I am thinking.” She says. “In the end it is your decision. I do not know if I would take it, but I will not think differently of you if you do.”

You nod. “Thanks Katya.”

She shrugs. “For giving my opinion?” She asks. “We should talk more often, you would not be wanting them so much then, I am thinking. I have many.”

“We'll see.” You say, grinning as you stand up. “So were you going to play?”

She nods. “I had planned to. Perhaps you would like to hear it? My grandmother taught me the song. I am told her father composed it.”

“Sure.” You nod, twisting around to watch her as she walks to the piano and sits down at the bench.

You've heard the song before, you're sure, though you can't place it. It's peaceful, though- you find yourself enjoying it pretty quickly, even though Piano music isn't really your thing.

The end is drowned out by the roar of multiple high-bypass turbofans- the big ones they stick on cargo jets. You and Katya both go over to the windows to see multiple C-33s in the pattern, landing one by one at the strip.

“Air supply?” You ask.

She nods. “Torun north is the major transportation hub.” She says. “But we are close enough that we can be used for overflow flights. I am thinking some of those are for us.”

“Maybe. This is the military we're dealing with.” you say. “Our stuff probably landed at Torun North.”

She laughs. “This thing, it is common everywhere.”

Well, you think. That makes you feel somewhat better. At least the reds have the same problem with supply being strange and arcane as you do.

That's it for tonight! Hahah. I hadn't planned out as much content as I usually do for this thread, partly because I was bashing my head against the desk trying to write the next Raikov chapter- I kinda hit writer's block two or three times on it. It's going Ok now, though, so that's good.

Anyway, guys, I don't really have much for here tonight. We're back on the normal schedule from now, so barring any strangeness, figure on regular Tuesday runs unless you see something on the twitter!

As always, hope you guys had fun, and till next time, cheers!

Thanks for today boss!

I have my waifus but in this case this doesn't hold much weight, they have some solid opinions but overall not much detail that outright states no.

Just a lot of Ifs.

Merlin's no better.

Kind of.

Slider was a no,

Ice and Katya are on the Fence, I wanted to hear from Merlin and Mav though.

I'm all for a Slider victory, but Mav would've been way up there as well

Well of coarse but I wanted to hear her justification on it and she has the most insight on the system then anyone else.
>>
>>37214146
Don't worry, Mav's harem will occasionally orbit through our Third Sphere harem.

>>37214108
That doesn't mean it is good, or canon.

Canon is that Maverick is in lesbians with Youngspawn, happily so.

>Also despite the opinions I felt that there wasn't much details on the system itself/
Pretty much, mostly because we're talking to people that don't know the system, if we could talk to some guys to work on it and study it full time then we might get that info, but for now its too much of a risk
>>
>>37214328
Yeah but we don't know who to go ito though?

Sokolov?
Isn't this derived from his work before he defecting?

I think so but he's not there.
