You are a motorcycle courier, and you live in a strange time. Technology has outrun itself. Data transmission is too advanced to be secure. It's anybody's guess how data is routed through the sprawling system, or how much of it any hub saves. Wireless is even worse - any message could be, and probably is, intercepted by any with an antenna, and decrypted by anyone with enough time. Speeding messengers with bags on their backs are the best option in an age where digital information's only security is obscurity. You are the cutting edge, in a world where that means taking approaches that would have been barbarically low-tech fifty years ago.

Riding hell-for-leather down an old subway tunnel turned storm sewer still sounds barbarically low-tech. Especially the part where you just hope desperately that they dont' flip the switch for the third rail again and fry you.

The motorcycle throbs between your legs, its steel bulk reassuring you with every jolt over an unseen obstacle. Being electrified doesn't seem to have done it any harm.

Well, that's the virtue of a fully-mechanical machine. A few sparks don't mean much to the thrusting pistons, or the spring-loaded levers, but any computerized system on the bike would be long gone by now.

So would you and your cargo, if you'd stayed in the water. The blonde asset is wilting against your back, hanging on with the last of her strength. Every so often, an especially savage bump drags a moan from her.

You wish you had something for her pain, but Matt obviously thought bolt cutters were more important than a first aid kit. Well, he is a mechanic, after all.

A mechanic that got personal with your bike, without your permission. Even though he did an excellent job of reinforcing it, and he seems like a true enthusiast, that leaves a bit of a bad taste in your mouth.
>>
>>37182857

It is your bike after all, you think, squeezing it between your thighs. At least he didn't get a chance to ride it.

Although this ride, with the wavering headlight providing the only light in the claustrophobic tunnel, is certainly one you could have skipped. It's just a cruise down old railroad tracks, with no real choice of which direction to take. The splashing water, the knowledge that several members of Dagon Core are chasing you, the limp blonde limpet on your back - they don't make it more interesting, just more complicated.

The throaty roar of your motorcycle echoes down the tunnel, drowning any noise the gurgling of the flowing water doesn't already mask.

that's probably where tweed- err, the other hound is
>>
>>37182863

They've probably got the nearest tunnel entrances guarded, at least with drones. It'll be safer to stick to the tunnels.

Hell, there might even be more Assets out there guarding them. There's no way Dagon Core is three Assets and a bunch of drones.

Although that might be all they committed to this operation, you think, eyeing the distorted reflections of your headlight bouncing off the slimy concrete roof of the tunnel. You don't know how important this damaged Asset is, or why your client wants her.

And that's another funny thing - clients rarely specify that damaged delivery is an acceptable tradeoff for speed. Even if they know the package is already broken, they'd just use it as an excuse to knock your fee down on delivery.

It's just strange, you think, the roar of the motorcycle in your ears as you pass a deserted subway stop. The noise changes character as it fills the wider space, and you catch a glimpse glimpse the mossy wreckage of a mass transit system's passenger platform.
>>
>>37183834

But the noise doesn't seem to fall back to normal afterward. There's a rumbling note, just under the seashore noise of your motorcycle's bow wave, and just above the moan the package lets out as you hit another unseen bump.

Maybe it's the changing character of the tunnel itself. You're seeing brick rather than concrete now, shining green hairs dangling from its mortar lines, each fiber trying to claw its own life from the tunnel's dank air.

Life too tiny to challenge the system that brought it forth. Tree roots would crumble the tunnel, grabbing clawfuls of brick and crushing it to powder in their pursuit of nutrients. But these mosses could survive on only what the damp air held for them, and would never grow big enough to harm the tunnels.

The tunnels that might hold a pursuer behind you, probably the red-armored motorcyclist.

Probably Eliza, unless the change in the noise really was the brick.

You don't have enough information to make a good decision, but damn it, making the best decision with the information you do have is what got you this far, isn't it?

That new note can't just be the reflection of your bike's engine from the brick. You saw that monster Eliza was riding, with its slablike armored hide.

It would make just such a grumbling as it stalked its prey, the shaking of the air, then the ceiling, the first warning of its presence. Unafraid to cry its glory to its fleeing victims, self-assured of enough power to send an advance notice of its hunt.

Fuck it, you're out. The next station can't come quickly enough. When you finally feel the draft turn cold, you call out "hang on tight" to your blonde burden. Her arms tighten a little, just as you jerk the bike toward the service ramp to the station's platform.

Then it's a short dash across the level surface of the platform itself, past the smashed and decaying lightboxes for advertisements, and a bumpy ride up yet another set of stairs.

Narrow, and steeply sloped, unless that's just your worry for your package speaking. The bike's wheels bump up one step after another, fighting for traction on the slick, algae-covered concrete.

A choke point.

Your eyes flicker up them, but don't meet any answering gun barrels or inquisitive, sightless drone eyes. An undefended choke point.

They might not have guarded it, it's definitely outside their secured zone, but you could try to make it harder to break through, give yourself an edge against the red beast pursuing you.

Near the top of the stairs, you spot of spool of high-tension comm wire, with a few tools scattered near it. It's odd that a quitting worker would just vanish, instead of taking some of the valuable wire or tools with him, but it's certainly a lucky coincidence.

You disentangle the blonde's arms from around yourself, an dismount onto the slick steps. There's a slight squelch as your foot crushes the algae, and you bend down to grab the bolt cutters.

This gate's lock is harder to cut than the last one, but that's probably because you're more tired, not because there's any more effort involved. A sharp kick sends it screaming open on its hinge, chain falling in a glistening pool to the ground.

It's the work of a few moments to loop the high-strength cable between the gateposts, a hard-to see black line in the rain twilight. Wheeling your bike under it doesn't take much time either, but it's enough to notice a free-standing steel post, perhaps set up to help direct lines for the subway, but now a naked metal erection with a mangled tip.

It's easy enough to avoid, but if you bent it toward the stairs, someone coming up the stair with enough speed might impale themselves on it.

Its jagged, hacked-off end looks like it might do well again armor.

Lances did, didn't they?

Maybe it would penetrate her armor, take her right off that red beast of a machine.

But Eliza's an old friend, maybe your oldest friend.

Quite probably your oldest friend who's still alive.

And you're not going to be the one who ends it, no matter how much a figment of your imagination painted in the black suit and red tie of your mentor tells you that it would look like an accident.

You couldn't do that to her, you realize, swinging one leg back over your own motorcycle. It seems even harder for the blonde to grab you this time, her hands spending more effort finding each other and locking together.

That burn and the layers of bound cloth over it are all that keeps her guts in right now. You can imagine how much pain she's in, but tat doesn't' make it any less, just makes her continued grip more impressive.

The rest of the trip back to point B back in Juptek Sector is going to be hell for her, you think, gunning the engine and starting off smoothly down the alley, trying not to jar the package.

She grunts in pain anyway, arms spasmodically squeezing your ribcage.

The satellite locator's working up here, so it only take a split second to find yourself on the map. The route back into Juptek Sector looks simple, and there are some good alternates, in case they set up a roadblock on one.

Simple, but long, at least for a package in this kind of condition, you think, as the blonde pants against you. You could probably complete the haul with her in front of you if she passes out, especially once you get into Juptek Sector.

Dagon Core wouldn't chase you too far in there, would they?

The client said that speed mattered more than the condition of the package, didn't they?

There's no time to stop for a doctor then, is there? But there is something you can do, and you can do it without even taking your hands off your motorcycle.

You dial the client's number, and make a sharp turn into another alley. It starts ringing as you shoot between mouldering concrete, cracks spidering across the walls that hem the space in.

But at least the alley's concrete, and not the damn cobblestones they have over in Vulnex Sector. Those things do a number on your back teeth.

The client picks up before the first ring finishes.

Antsy.

"I've collected the package," you say, and pause for half a second to swing viciously around another corner.

"Great," he sticks in nervously, as if he thinks you need an acknowledgement to keep talking.

Well, considering how bad communication is sometimes, it might be useful.

It's still a little annoying.

"Her guts are trying to escape through her bellybutton," you tell him, and pause intentionally this time. The straightaway doesn't give you another reason to.

"Great," he says, then catches himself, "uh, no, that's not great at all. We'll have medical standing by."

"And I've probably got someone on my tail," you finish, opening the throttle as much as you dare with the damaged Asset clinging to you.

"We'll have someone standing by for that too," he says, "anything else?"

"Is that Iscar?" you hear weakly from behind you, barely a whisper on the wind, even when uttered with enough force to cause a twitch in the arms encircling you. A dangerous twitch.

"Are you Iscar?" you ask the voice on the other end of the line, slacking off on the speed so your cargo can get a better grip.

Confusion from the other end of the line. "Iscar?" he asks, obviously flustered, "Oh, Mr. Scary. No," he says, gulping audibly, "no I'm not him. At least she's got it together enough to ask."

"No," you tell your charge, "It's not him."

There's a lowering of shoulders against your back, and probably a sigh too weak to reach your ears. "But it should have been him sending you," you half-hear, half-guess at in the rushing wind, as the slumps further down, "he's the one who would care enough."

This is getting a little bit more complicated than you'd expected, but maybe the package is delirious.

Or maybe there's something else going on here.

There's a good chunk of you that wants to just take the package to point B and be done with it.

Sure, the situation's probably complicated, but every situation is, in this business. And the more time you spend on the phone, the more likely it is that someone will track you by its signal, especially at this speed the package's state is forcing you to take.

But what else do you really have to do on the ride, look at the scenery? When you've seen one concrete building, half-eaten by the damp salt air, with wet stains down its sides, tracing toward the storm sewers, you've seen them all.

"Is there something I should know?" you ask. What are they going to do, spread the word that you're the nosey kind?

Well, that might be bad for your rep, but if it keeps people from calling you for jobs like your brush with the nanoplague, that's fine with you.

"Let me, uh, get someone who would be able to answer your questions," he says, in the voice of a man who doesn't have all the answers himself, and would really rather be somewhere else. You can hear him saying 'sir? She'd like to talk to you' in the background.

Didn't cover the receiver, did he?

Well, you're not going to make the smae mistake. You mute yourself, then start asking the package a few questions.

Questions she can barely answer, in her state.

"How can I tell if this guy's working for the same people you are?" you ask, then strain your ears for her answer.

"I'm with Juptek," you hear, "Ishtar Ward," she tells you, every word loaded with pain, "Mr. Iscariot's group. Ask about," she says, then draws a deep breath, "an animal."

"Hello?" another man says over your helmet speaker, confident. Willful.

You can't help but think of a red chess piece, taller than the others, striding across the board in any direction it wishes.

Sorry for the delay, got tied up in something IRL. Seems like the Lamb write-in won, so I'll be writing that.

Looks like you've been having fun while I was out, though.

"So," you ask, "what happened to the lamb?" There's some connection between that animals and the name Iscariot, but you can't remember exactly what it is.

"Oh," he says with a laugh, "you can buy it for thirty silver. What can I do for you?"

You mute yourself quickly, and relay his cryptic response to the package. She manages to get out a weak "he knows Iscar, at least," in answer, then re-tightens her grip on you as you throttle up. The faster you make it back, the faster she gets a doc.

Of course, point B is still a good fifteen minutes out, you think as you flip transmission back on. Your eye flicks past the cop detector as you do.

Virtually nothing. At least that's going right.

"Your package might reach its expiry date before I reach point B," you tell him, "unless it gets medical attention."

"How do you make cheese?" he asks you, letting the question hang in the air as you round another corner. A sharp breath from your passenger hisses in your ear.

Maybe that was a little fast, or maybe she's wearing out.

"Spoiled milk," he says, voice a wooden block, clunking on a marble slab, "we need her, and we need her alive, but we don't need her in one piece. And if you stop anywhere without a few Assets guarding it, Dagon Core will grab her."

"I take it you've got a few Assets waiting in the wings?" you ask.

"Of course," he tells you lightly, "and a few on the board already."

"Well," you say, a bit less concerned, "I'll get on with it then," and terminate the connection.

Knowing point B can resist a Dagon Core assault definitely takes a load off your mind. And he does make a good point about any undefended drop point just making the two of you sitting ducks.

Of course, there's something about the way he casually told you that they don't' need her in one piece that makes your hackles rise. On the other hand, there's no way you could deliver her unscathed at this point - she's in better shape then you found her, at least.

That's not saying much, considering that her intestines were barely inside her before your emergency treatment.

But hell, you're a walking, or riding, example of someone that didn't need to be in one piece. And the package doesn't even have an 'incurable' disease, just some trauma.

'Just some trauma'. Hah. That's like saying Nepcor Sector has 'just some maintenance issues'. They're the defining feature of this place now, cracks and stains everywhere. At least the drains work, but maybe that was just another maintenance failure - the water started draining into the subway, and nobody stopped it.

Nepcor's always been your least favorite sector, you think as the cold drizzle of rain sluices over your new red bodysuit, and patters on the blonde Asset's coat.
>>
>>37190423

Her grip suddenly slides loose, then she makes a clumsy regrab and hisses with pain. You cut your speed, realizing that she almost passed out.

Time to switch her to the front.

The bike climbs the curb easily, and you let it idle as you dismount, the barely-breathing blonde almost falling to the concrete when she loses her handhold. You steady her and sort of pour her onto the front of the motorcycle seat, your boots grinding on the wet pavement.

Luckily she's petite enough to do this with.

Her eyes close, then flicker open a couple of times during the procedure. You're about to lose her to unconsciousness.

There's probably time for one more question, you think as you get on behind her and grip the handlebars. If worst come to worst, you can hold her on with your thighs and elbows.

"What's Mr. Iscariot's phone number?" you ask her, shifting a bit to get comfortable on the bike's seat. While it'll make things easier in the long run, this position's a lot more irritating to ride in. You can't really lean forward any farther, and the blonde Asset's back is pressing the boxy frame of your SMG into your breast.

It's more annoying than painful, though.

And maybe the pain is keeping her with you. She's able to force out the whole number as you get back on the road, although the moan of pain she gives when you take the curb breaks it in the middle.

She's still with it after you finish entering the number into your contacts. So you go for another, more entertaining question.

"So how's your sex life?" you ask, accelerating to a much higher speed than you were able to before. This should cut the travel time by a decent bit, although steering around the package is frustrating.

"What?" she asks you, forcing it out between clenched teeth. You can almost hear the 'at a time like this?' that would follow if she wasn't in so much pain.

"Hey," you respond, leaning into a curve, "the scenery isn't getting any more interesting."

Well, to be fair, we were told well in advance this would be in Nepcor's (and thus Dagon Core's) territory when we took it on.

We'll have to pay attention to details like that in the future.
>>
>>37191105

"And I notice you've got a pet name for Mr. Iscariot," you say, teasingly. It's the best you can do for bedside manner right now.

The blonde sighs and winces in your arms. "He doesn't like 'Mr. Scary'," she tells you in a voice you hardly catch above the wind's rush, "that's it."

Well, that's a bit disappointing. But, of course, it might not be the whole truth.

It's all you're getting right now, though. The package slides into unconsciousness within a block. You hope it makes everything hurt less.

Because if she's awake, going these speeds is going to hurt a lot.

You open the throttle bit by bit, burning down the little cared-for road. Small cracks jolt the bike slightly, but you can run down grass all day.

And if you're racing Eliza for the border, you need all the speed you can get. The wire probably threw her off the bike, although it shouldn't have hurt her badly in that armor.

Maybe you should see about getting a riding suit like that, although you're not sure the extra weight would be worth it - anything less the armor-piercing rounds will just leave you bruises in your current getup.

Everything's looking up, every the scenery. The rain lightens as you near the Juptek Sector border, making you wonder about the weather patterns again. You can see the lights of office buildings in the distance.

One of them is point B.

You can see it from here, but you're not at the finish line yet. Another ten minutes, your display tells you.

A wide sweep up the onramp takes you into the artery of commerce, a hauler-choked highway.

Hauler Hell.

Lanesplitting heaven.

You don't see the broken concrete guardrails this time. The 18-wheeled tractor-trailers on both sides keep blocking your view. There's a slice of sky above you, dripping rain, and a narrow window down the length of the highway.

Your motorcycle roars as you open the throttle up, blasting down the trench. There's no way for the police, which your detector says are somewhere nearby, to see you, let alone chase you down.

Well, James might be able to try on his motorcycle, but you'd still bet on your beloved bike against his corp-issued pig wings.

It's a simple ride into Juptek Sector, but definitely not boring. A couple of truckers tried to edge onto the line, denying you the space from their envy of your speed.

You were too fast for their attempts to crush you, but those were some hair-raising seconds anyway.

They should envy you. You live a life of danger and excitement, reaping the big rewards that come with taking the big risks. Sure, you could be driving a hauler instead of your faithful steel steed, but how boring would that be? And the pay's not nearly as good.

You have to admit that driving a hauler might have saved you from the close encounter with the Nanoplauge, and your life would definitely be less complicated.

But where would the fun be in that?

There's no fanfare when you cruise into Juptek Sector, but the dancing lights of the buildings on each side of the road seem almost like celebratory fireworks.

You've only seen those a couple of times, and only one of those was up close.

But there's no time to think about that right now. You're delivering the package to point B, in as few pieces as you can.

The faster you get there, you think, watching the dots on your map, the better chance she has.

Five minutes out.

The blonde Asset is slumped against you, limp but breathing. That last part's good, at any rate.

"You still there?" you ask, shaking her lightly. She stiffens a little and rewards you with a pained groan.

Well, that's probably the best you could expect.

The highway blurs under your wheels as your motorcycle screams along, fast as you can take it with someone leaning back on you. The dots on the map are converging.

It's about time, you think, reigning in your steel steed to make it down the offramp. The street is a constellation of lgihts. Signs, windows, cars, haulers, even another couple of motorcycles - everything's lit, and the lights are dancing.

They blur past, beauty smeared by your insistent speed. This is the home stretch, no reason to slack off now.

You wheedle the bike through traffic, stabbing into any gap, piercing the lines of cars. The blocks between you and point B vanish one by one.

There's an garage-style door on the ground floor, halfway open. It barely clears your helmet as you cruise inside.

Then it slams down behind you, and the lights snap on.

Harsh, sterile beams stab down from lights set in the ceiling. Everything's white, white and gleaming. Your motorcycle's idle echoes off the hard walls.

The whole place smells of antiseptic, and not just one. It's a noxious cocktail of alcohol and chlorine, not enough to be dangerous, but enough to bite at the back of your sinuses.

A team of medtechs wheel a gurney toward you, a man in a white lab coat running alongside, barking technical-sounding orders. They wave you off your bike and swarm the blonde Asset, placing her on the rolling stretcher far more gently than you expected from their chaotic and intense manner.

Within thirty seconds, the blonde Asset, whose name you still don't know, is riding an elevator up into the building, strapped to a gurney and surrounded by medical professionals.

You even saw one of them sticking her with an IV while the doors closed.

You're not quite sure how to feel about it all. Seems like she's in efficient hands, in what seems to be a secret hospital/safehouse. All the same, you've been by her side for hours, and you're not sure you'll see her again.

"You ever see a team of ants carrying a caterpillar?" a voice asks from behind you. You start in surprise, but recover as you turn to face him.

Oh, there's a door in that wall. White, like everything else.

You must have been watching the medics too closely to notice him enter. His black suit stands out too much against the white room for you to have missed him otherwise.

Unkempt short black hair tops off a winking face. His smile's nicer than a smirk, fairly pleasant actually.

"So," you ask him, "are you supposed to pay me?"

"All business, huh?" he replies, sounding a bit disappointed. The smile droops a bit, "yeah, I'm here to pay ya," he says, showing you a tablet with a receipt on it. Your receipt - some of the bonuses have check marks by them, others don't. "Look alright to ya?" he asks as you glance over it.

"Yeah," you tell him, and he taps the button to initiate the transfer. "I haven't ever seen ants carry a caterpillar," you say, looking up at him, "does it look like that?"

"There's no boss ordering them around," he says, staring blankly at the elevator, "but other than that, very much so. Dragging the victim back to their nest so they can cut it up."

As he says that, his face turns slightly. There's a masklike grin on his features now, and his eyes fix on yours. Strangely red eyes.

He makes an exaggerated shrug, the tablet dangling dangerously from his fingertips.

"So are you this charming with every courier you hire?" you ask, raising your eyebrows at him, "or are you flashing me that Glasgow for some special reason?"

"Oh," he says, eyes swiveling back to you, and the original, gentler smile returns, "charming's a new one too, but Glasgow isn't, I'm afraid. Still, would you like to go to dinner? There's a couple of good places close by."

If we want a husbando, we'll find one on our own in our own damn time, not because we're choking on them because you keep throwing them in our faces.

"I'm afraid I've got other plans," you tell him, and the smile fades back into the blank look.

"That's too bad," he says tonelessly, staring at the elevator behind you, "but I should have expected it."

"Can you cut the crap and tell me what's going on?" you ask, stepping into his line of sight and staring him down.

Those are the emptiest eyes you've ever seen. Nothing at all behind them, sightless orbs.

And then they flicker back to life, and the manic grin with them.

"What's going on?" he echoes, then laughs, almost doubling over in his mirth, "they're vivisecting her, of course!" he manages to get out, over a fit of laughter, then pulls himself up to stand like a lecturer, "A rare genetic specimen, with very valuable organs, and a better chance of preserving them if they go straight from her body into whatever the hell those things are they use to keep them alive artificially! That's why she had that slash on her stomach, bitch! Nepcor almost did the operation before we could pull her out, but you got her back here in time," he says, that horrifying grin splitting his face, "congratulations! And that idiot, Mr. Scary, kept blocking us because she was 'critical to the operations of Ishtar Ward'. Hah! Critical to the operation of his cock! I'd like to see his face when he finds out!"

They probably shoved it in the furnace already to hide the evidence! It's not worth the expense of maintaining - doesn't have whatever the hell it is makes her other organs special. But her liver! "Bullshit," you yell, drawing the SMG from your coat, "that slash was horizontal, and dissection's vertical," you finish, leveling the weapon at him, "now tell me what's really going on."

"It was only horizontal because she fought her way off the operating table when they stuck her!" he replies, gesticulating wildly.

It's three quick, sharp steps to him, and he doesn't notice because he's so wrapped up in his own performance.

"Because she felt the scalpel - they didn't use enough anesthetic there, Nepcor's too cash strapped," he continues, words and hands rolling on in a deluge of this shit, "but our doctors wouldn't make such a - "

He stops talking when you shove his lower jaw against the upper with the SMG.

"Fuck you," you say, "you lying fuck! Now will you stop fucking with me and tell me the truth, or am I going to have to ruin that nice smile?"

If there's one thing you've learned in this business, it's that the that black, mirror-finished visor of a motorcycle helmet is really damn intimidating. You're not a person who can be reasoned with, a man who can be beaten, a woman who can be frightened, a child who can be appeased.

You are a biker, and you are angry at this fucking liar, this bastard who keeps changing his story to stymie any objections.

You ease off just enough so he can talk, if he tilts his head back and stands on his tiptoes.

"Alright," he says, hands up in the universal 'don't shoot' gesture, "alright. I'll tell you."

Movement catches your eye, and you tighten your grip on the trigger.

It's the door behind the smiler, swinging open to frame a read-haired man, head bent down, fingers pecking on a tablet. He looks up and anger races across his face.

"Christ, Thad," he yells in a voice used to command, hands slicing through the air like an orator's, "you weren't supposed to be the goddamn negotiator! Is Gabe tied up in a fucking closet?"

Now that voice is familiar. He's the second man on the phone, the one who knew what was going on.

Then he turns his head a few degrees, looking at you and trying to pull a pleasant expression over his obvious rage, "I'm sorry for whatever my employee has said to you, ma'am. It's an oversight on my part you had to deal with him."

"Was he telling the truth?" you ask the newcomer, with an unseen glare.

He cuts in before you can stack a threat on it. "I don't know what he told you," he says, picking up his tablet from where it flew during his gesticulations, "but probably not, judging from your reaction. Thad," he asks, "how long since you took your damn medicine?"

"Yesterday," comes the sullen reply, Thad's jaw pushing the SMG down, "you know I work better without it," he whines, eyes rolled back to look at his boss.

"Explain to me," the redhead says, jaw muscles tight, "how this," he asks, waving his free hand at you, "is good work. But not now," he says, as Thad's jaw bobbles against the SMG's barrel, "not in front of a contractor. Take a chill pill when she lets you go, and we'll talk about this later."

"I'm not letting him go until you tell me what exactly you're paying four times my standard rate for," you tell him, "and if you don't, I'm putting a mag into his brain."

The boss sighs, stuffing one hand into his pocket. You take the opportunity to study him through the mirrored visor.

He's young, too young to be a true exec. Is he just some exec's brat on a power trip? The suit's nice, his hair is decently cut, and his features show promise, although they need a few years to harden.

You can almost see the wheels turning in his head as he searches for the right answer, buying time to think by putting the tablet away slowly.

Also, it's interesting to note that Redhead watching the whole thing on his tablet retroactively makes his entire entrance and profession of ignorance about what Thad's been saying a calculated lie.

>Also, it's interesting to note that Redhead watching the whole thing on his tablet retroactively makes his entire entrance and profession of ignorance about what Thad's been saying a calculated lie.
Original write-in anon here, for me it was more intended to be him trying to placate and disarm us rather than a calculated lie.

Also don't twist my write-in to invalidate it like that.
>>
>>37195793
So did you just veto that writein or what because I'm not understanding your post.
>>
>>37195793
>due to anesthetic precluding the debrief
>what is a local anasthetic
I was awake and conscious through the operation I had to remove my appendix, and while thats not on the same scale, the medicine behind it does scale, so don't give us bullshit about medical science like that when its completely plausible for current real life science.

>makes his entire entrance and profession of ignorance about what Thad's been saying a calculated lie.
No it doesn't, only if you twist it that way.
>>
>>37195793
I'm really hoping you don't use some minor syntax to fuck us over with this when you give us free reign to fix your clusterfuck.

I don't imagine Redhead got to where he is at his age without being intelligent, and also >>37195820 was how I interpreted it.
>>
>>37195820
Isn't being untruthful in order to make someone feel a certain way a pretty good example of a calculated lie?
>>
>>37195965
Depends on the intention of it anon, not always. A cautious mistruth is not a calculated lie.

Or just the shock of walking in to a room with a very twitchy dangerous woman who has a rather potent firearm to his employee's head made him act defensive.
>>
>META POST

This is why sane people don't do Write Ins for NPCs. I specified that this was "write in what Redhead does", and I got back a write in involving the actions of a completely different character (Scary), and giving a specific about an operation (that it was possible to debrief during) that is already in progress, and Redhead cannot affect it with this decision.

I wanted an answer to "how does he react to you?", and I got an answer that attempted to overwrite already in-motion pieces of the plot, which a decision made by him at this time could not logically affect.

I should have anticipated this, and not given a choice of this nature, or simply not allowed Write Ins for it.

I've decided to try to explain myself this time, since some of the posts on the ask suggested that.

>>37195820
>>37195872
I thought I'd covered 'placate and disarm' with 'doormat'.

If he was watching on the tablet, then "I don't know what he told you" (>>37195568) is an outright lie, and the sudden reaction to Thad's situation in >>37195307 is very probably an act.

That said, I would find that behavior a very interesting thing to build his character development in consistency with, but thought I would specify the exact effect of the Write In before executing it, in case there was a mismatch between that effect and your intended meaning (which seems to be the case).
>>
>>37195981
>the shock

If he was watching the scene on the tablet already, the shock wasn't genuine.
>>
>>37195983
>and I got back a write in involving the actions of a completely different character
No you didn't, all of that except the very last bit was Redhead's actions, don't try to pull that bullcrap HD.
>>
>>37195981
>depends on the intention of it
True enough.
>>
>>37195983
>but thought I would specify the exact effect of the Write In before executing it
You still haven't done that and I don't get the point of your post, you might want to clarify exactly what he will be doing and exactly how you interpret the write in to be before pulling the trigger on it.
>>
>>37195983
>I wanted an answer to "how does he react to you?", and I got an answer that attempted to overwrite already in-motion pieces of the plot, which a decision made by him at this time could not logically affect.
Don't pull this bullshit, you asked how he reacted, giving us control of these events, don't you dare try to veto this and keep your railroaded fuckup intact.
>>
>>37196016
>you asked how he reacted, giving us control of these events
If by these events, you mean how one character reacted to us.
Because that was what happened.
It wasn't just a free "you control the plot now" button, that would be stupid.
>>
>>37195983
>and I got back a write in involving the actions of a completely different character (Scary)
Original write-in anon here, let me correct you. That write in involved only the actions of Redhead doing this:

- Telling us that what Thad told us about them vivisecting the Blonde not being true, and that they are not going that
- Showing us to the room where they are patching her up and not cutting her apart

>I wanted an answer to "how does he react to you?", and I got an answer that attempted to overwrite already in-motion pieces of the plot, which a decision made by him at this time could not logically affect.
No, it seems you wanted us to pick how exactly you fuck us over and we voted for you to not fuck us over.
>>
>>37195983
>but thought I would specify the exact effect of the Write In before executing it, in case there was a mismatch between that effect and your intended meaning (which seems to be the case).
SO SPECIFY IT ALREADY

YOU STILL HAVEN'T TOLD US ANYTHING.

Goddamn yes there is a mismatch, we want to retcon this crap, you gave us the vote to do that, and we did that, don't try to twist it against us now, not after the shit you've pulled with this thread. My trust and faith in you and this quest is hanging on by a bare thread HD.
>>
>>37195990
There is a very distinct different between watching something and being in the room experiencing it.
>>
>>37195983
>but thought I would specify the exact effect of the Write In before executing it
So would you mind doing that already so we can tell you how that isn't what we intended at all?

This is what I voted for; a retcon of them cutting up, killing and disposing of the blonde asset, an explanation from Redhead that that nonsense was Thad off his meds, and proof that Thad was lying, and that the Blonde asset is being treated for her injuries and will not be/has not been cut up and killed.

Redhead tells Laura that Thad was lying about vivisecting the blonde. Redhead then escorts Laura to view the patching-up of the blonde Asset, which proves Thad to have been lying.

No you didn't, we gave you a write-in of the actions of Redhead, demonstrating that his colleagues are NOT infact vivisecting the asset and are in fact healing her. The Mr Scary bit was an addon designed to further reassure us of their good intentions.
>and I got an answer that attempted to overwrite already in-motion pieces of the plot
That you railroaded into place.
>which a decision made by him at this time could not logically affect.
Yet you gave us that power and control, and we voted to do just that.
>but thought I would specify the exact effect of the Write In before executing it
You still have not specified anything, let alone what you interpret our votes to actually be, and what their effect will be.

Theres a mismatch between you and us on a hell of a lot more then that evidently.

This is not an argument, but a meaningless attempt at self-justification.

First off, this was my screw up, and I'm heartily sorry for it. I gave an unclear choice.

Thad was lying from the start (as >>37194913 got), thus the later parts where he was more obviously making it up as he went along (his explanation for the horizontal gash is the biggest example of this, and >>37194904
was an example on the meta level). I should have made it clear that the choices in >>37195568 were about SHOWING Laura the evidence Thad was lying, instead of choosing WHETHER Thad was lying.

"What did Thad tell you?" the redhead asks, in an obvious attempt to buy more time. Well, even if it is a ploy, there's nothing to do but tell him.

And you do. He listens carefully, pacing around the room with both hands in his pockets.

"That's a straight-out lie," he tells you when you finish, "but I understand why it sounded convincing. Hell," he says, savagely punching a button for the elevator, "it's close enough to the truth I'll have to show you the damn operation to get you to believe. Thad," he says in a sterner voice, "this is why you're a security risk."

"But can't we disappear her?" Thad asks, tilting his head back to be able to open his jaw enough to talk, "she's just a courier."

"Not an option," the redhead says sternly, a pice of gold decoration on his suit flashing in the hard white light. It looks like the outline of a bird's wing, "I'd prefer to leave Thad on the ground floor for this one," he tells you, putting his hands up as the elevator opens behind him, "and I'd make a better hostage anyway."

>>37196444
Here's a freebie, as a sample of how I think through things:

Keep Thad: Thad doesn't take his meds, and his augs (evinced by the glowing red eyes and aberrant behaviour) have a chance of messing up some delicate electronics. Unmedicated Thad is dangerous, but not immediately lethal.

Take the redhead: Thad takes his meds and stays on ground floor. The doctors and upstairs guards get antsy when you show up holding their boss at gunpoint. Redhead likes you following his plan.

Kill Thad: The redhead can't stop you, but will look for any chance for the upstairs guards to ventilate you. If you leave the building alive (good chance of this), you've made a significant enemy.

Release Thad: Thad takes his meds and stays on ground floor. The upstairs guards and docs see you as an anonymous guest. The redhead is displeased that you're yet another person ignoring his plans, and fails to understand why you don't consider a hostage necessary.

So everything is important, at some level.

Voting's over with this post, with a Take The Redhead win, if I'm interpreting >>37196441 correctly. (Take the redhead, threaten Thad if he touches Laura's bike.)
>>
>>37196532
Can we be subtle about the hostageness? No need to go full arm/neck lock with gun to temple, we can just keep our SMG behind his back and ready to act or put it away.
>>
>>37196532
>and fails to understand why you don't consider a hostage necessary.
If we did this and if he was smart, then he would realize that we're comfortable enough in such a potentially hostile situation as to not need a hostage, which should worry him.

But he's young and he'll learn with experience.
>>
>>37196575
That's what I would assume, but the guards would probably still be suspicious. The docs, not so much.

"Alright," you tell him, backing away from Thad, but keeping your gun trained on the lying psycho, "but if he touches my bike," you say, suddenly swiveling your aim to the redhead as you stride to the elevator, "he dies and you pay for it."

"That's the kind of courier I like to hire," he says, backing further into the steel box, "Thad, I want to see you take that chill pill."

"Sure, sure," Thad says, digging through his pockets. You tighten your grip on the SMG as he does so, pressing the short barrel into the small of the redhead's back. If the smiler pulls out a gun, you're going to redecorate the wall with his boss.

But he pulls out a pill case, and pops one onto his tongue, which he wags disrespectfully at his boss, displaying the pill clearly before he swallows it. "Well," he says, looking a bit glum, "boring Thad's going to be back soon," he continues, turning on his heel, "I hope he makes you miss me," he tosses over his shoulder as he pushes through the door in the opposite wall.

"Believe it or not," the redhead says, pressing a button for a higher floor, "we always do eventually. I'm not sure I've got your name," he says, looking at you over his shoulder, "I'm Reginald Arnweald, pleased to meet you, even if it was under strained circumstances."

"I'm Laura," you tell him, "and I'll be more pleased once I'm sure your subordinate was lying."

"You'll see shortly," he says, as the numbers above the door tick up, "we got info that a rescue attempt for Elanor had crashed and burned, and so we sent you in to try and salvage it. You did a wonderful job, all things considered, even trying to defend the package after delivery."
>>
>>37196803

The elevator's ding punctuates his sentence, and the doors slide back to reveal a pair of guards in a gleaming white hallway. Everything looks oppressively sterile.

You hope they don't notice the gun you're cramming into their boss's back, but it'll be hard to hide when you walk past them.

"It's alright," the fool in front of you says, "she's with me."

The guards relax, as if those are magic words. They don't even raise an eyebrow at the gun as you pass. Probably a pre-arranged code phrase, you realize, and you're suddenly very impressed with their training.

It's one thing to stay always alert, but quite another to relax on command.

"If you want to get the first-hand experience," Reginald tells you, jerking his head toward a pair of double doors with a lit 'surgery in progress' sign over them, "you'll have to scrub up. but I can recommend the observation room. It's got a good enough view you'd think you were in there yourself."

The doors he gestured at are papered with warning labels, as if everything that passed through them had its label peeled off and added to a door. Gives you a bit of a pause to see some of those together - you hope the oxidizer and high explosives weren't in use at the same time.

But the one that scares you the most is the most recent one, a single word handwritten in black ink on a plain white sticker.
