“Nobody except the Imperiate,” you tell Alan, moving over to Zote’s side to get a closer look at the map. It’s crinkled and smells vaguely of mildew. Faded ink marks the limits of mountain ranges and oceans with which you’re unfamiliar.

Alan doesn’t recognize the term. “The what?”

“You know,” you say, squinting suspiciously at him, “the infallible harbinger of chaos. Hell’s big cahuna. There’s a bunch of weirdness about it, but basically Ranthix and all the chaos knights don’t do anything unless the Imperiate says so. Didn’t Nabuth tell you why he was here or whatever?”

Alan makes a serious face. “Nabuth kept to himself.”

Frederick joins you by the map, but instead of showing you the business, he jumps into the conversation. “So this Imperiate must have a reason for having one of his knights in the region,” he observes, probably paranoid about hellish plots or whatever.

“Well no, the Imperiate died,” you say. “There’s politics and stuff. Look, let’s stick to business here, all right?”

Frederick nods, then looks to Zote. The robot thing looks up, adjusts his officer’s cap, and steps away from the table. Once he’s got maneuvering room, he points to the map, his expression and demeanor becoming serious. He taps a finger on the map, next to a little dot labeled in scripty text difficult to read. It’s by a crescent shaped shoreline of some land-locked sea, as far as you can tell.
>>
>>37144845

“Our objective is in the Realm of Whitebanner, on the Cerran plane. The spell portaling us from Terran to Cerra should deposite us here, sout of the Great Wood of Baymoore,” says Frederick. “The village of Baymoore itself is a couple klicks east, here.” He indicates the dot by the forest. “We’ll procure horses from the village and travel southeast toward Ashpeak, and further on to the Stronghold of Pelheft.” He points at the locations in turn, sweeping to the right on the map for your benefit.

“Wait wait. Stronghold? You mean like a castle?” you ask.

“There’s likely a castle somewhere,” says Frederick, “but it has no bearing on our objective. My sources point to the portal being somewhere in the Field of Rust, which I’ve estimated to be here.” He points to a point just right of Pelheft, and just left of an area labled ‘The Seeping Plains’. “We get there, you unlock the landwell with your magic, and we go back the way we came. Assuming fair weather, it’ll take no longer than three days total.”

“So if we’re just walking around, why all the security?”

“Whitebanner is governed by the Knights Seraphis, a monastic order. They take a critical view of demons – not literal demons, but anyone from another plane. It’s not much of a task to sneak in and out without notice, given that most of the land is either pure wilderness or farming territory. There are no police or border guards or anything of the like. There’s little to no infrastructure. Like I told you earlier, though, I’ve augured some kind of conflict during our journey.”

“You aren’t going to have to fight,” Alan chips in. “Ranthix has that covered. When the arrows start flying, step back and let him do his job.”

“Let me just say, I met the guy face to face. Getting Ranthix was a good choice,” you say.
>>
>>37144922

“I mean. I’m totally on board with putting safety matters in his claws.” Although, the promise that you won’t have to get violent with anybody doesn’t quite sit well with you. You’d probably help out a little, if you got the chance. Just something to whet your claws. Nothing major. You shake the thoughts from your mind. “Still though, let’s say we run into some of these Seraphis guys. Are they like, regular knights or what?”

Frederick takes a second to figure out the answer you want. “They aren’t modernly equipped or trained.”

“Magic’s not regular,” Alan reminds him.

He furrows his brow. “Then… no. They’re not regular. The Seraphis generally train thoroughly in arcane techniques, supposedly mirroring those of the Seraphim. Take it with a grain of salt, though. Cerran nations fall prey to superstition and misinformation more often than not, so the competency of any Seraphis we do encounter will vary greatly.”

“So basically, we’re going into medieval times, and the locals might try to burn us at the stake?” you ask.

“That’s one way to look at it,” Frederick confirms.

“Important question. Assuming all this goes off well, will the US know or care about it?” You already have enough problems with the government as is.

“Probably not,” says Alan. “From what I’ve heard, the Department of Esoterica doesn’t give a shit about anything that doesn’t involve US citizens.”

“Countries in Terra are too occupied with international business to worry about events happening one or two planes away,” Derek explains. “In a strictly legal sense, everything you do outside of Terra stays outside of Terra.”

Huh. Good to know.

Everything else seems to check out, so you broach the last and possibly most touchy topic. “Now, this might be a problem, it might not, I don’t know. But I kind of don’t really know anything about portalling people around,” you tell Frederick.
>>
>>37144946

“I mean, I fought this demon lady once that tried to drag me to hell through a landwell, but I don’t know about anything other than claiming them.”

“All you have to do is claim the portal,” Derek says, making sure to be very clear. “Once it’s unsealed, our mages will figure out the rest. It’s the seal that’s –“

A furious man in shorts, a snazzy Hawaiian shirt, and beach flip-flops barges in through the door, a suspicious duffel bag slung over his back.

“I AM ARRIVED,” he shouts, throwing the duffel onto the table. It lands with a loud metallic jangle, and rolls nearly off the toher side. He storms over to the water cooler, douses his hands, and begins splashing his face. Water drops fly everywhere “COOL AND FREFRESHING. WELL DONE, MY ABOBINABLY WEAK, YET WELL-PAYING CHUM,” he declares, most probably to Frederick.

You notice Zote reaching around to the holster concealed on the inside of his jacket, more of a nervous motion than a sign of aggression.

“Thank you. We were just going over the specifics of the operation,” Derek replies. “I assume you’re Ranthix?”

Ranthix turns and glares at all present. “CHECK YOURSELF BEFORE YOU WRECK YOURSELF, IRON MAN,” Ranthix commands, singling out Zote. Then he turns his burning eyes onto you. “WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS WITCHERY?” His voice is full of directionless spite and malice.

Alan glances at you before standing up and addressing the Thul’tal. “Sierra’s on the job, just like you.”

“Oh yeah. I’m Sierra. I’m the designated landmaster,” you tell Ranthix, pretending, perhaps poorly, that you don’t know him extremely well already.

Despite Ranthix’s lack of subtlety, he is nonetheless quite cunning. He picks up on the ruse straightaway, though the momentary fury in his gaze tells you that you need to explain the situation later. He glowers at Freddy. “BAH. HELLBORN AND LANDMASTERS AND METAL MEN AND FATE MAGES, YOUR PLOT WAXES THICK IN COMPLICATIONS, THING OF FLESH.”

“If that’s what it takes, then it’s what I’ll do,” Frederick replies.

“YES IT IS, ISN’T IT,” he growls. He points out the map. “LET’S SEE WHAT YOU THINK IT TAKES.” Frederick only gets through explaining the basic route of travel when Ranthix has had enough. “A SIMPLE PLAN FOR A SIMPLE MIND. WHEN DO WE LEAVE?”

“The sooner the better,” says Derek.

“FRIDAY IT IS. WHAT, SAY, EIGHTEEN HUNDRED HOURS? WHERE IS YOUR SPELL, WIZARD?”

Alan, even though he was the one that recommended him in the first place, is astounded by Ranthix’s forwardness. “Don’t you need to know about where we’re going? Maybe about the Knights Seraphis?”

“IMMITATIONS ALL,” Ranthix shouts. “NOW ANSWER MY QUESTION OR FACE THE CONSEQUENCES.”

Frederick hastens to answer. “We can depart on Friday, and the spell is ready to go in the parking garage across the street from Westerfield Mall.”

You give him a critical look. “You set this up in a mall?”

Freddy takes a breath. “No, I set it up in the parking garage across the street from the mall. Weren’t you listening?”
>>
>>37146257

“So why there, anyway?” you deflect.

Alan answers with a shrug. “Convenience.”

“The mall did have several of the necessary materials,” he says.

“CASE CLOSED,” Ranthix confirms. “BE THERE WITH MY MONEY AND I WILL BE THERE WITH MY SELF. UNLESS YOU HAVE DEVISED A NEW WAY TO SQUANDER MY TIME, I WILL HAVE A WORD WITH THIS MASTER OF LAND, THIS ‘SIERRA’, ON MY OWN TERMS. ALL OF YOU I KNOW TO BE NIGH PITIABLE IF SUCH A THING WERE POSSIBLE, BUT THIS SPAWNLING NEEDS BE JUDGED INDEPENDENTLY. I SHALL BE WITHOUT.”

Ranthix shoves Zote out of the way because he can, and then walks out the door, grabbing his duffel on the way.

>Well. I’d better go see what he wants.
>So, I’m not quite sold on this plan of yours, but I’ll get back to you when I can.
>Count me in, I guess. So long as you have my money I’ll have my self too.

I am conflicted. On the one hand I wanna get things dealt with Baron and Vik soon as possible, but on the other hand we might get wings from this mission if things go right, and wings would be a cool thing to show off.

This plan has been in the works for awhile, and the camping trip was an off hand idea.

We can either move the camping trip up, or wait until after the adventure. I say we do it early so we have a chance to kill something before the mission.
>>
>>37146459
>I say we do it early
Not much time left this weekend. Both, camping trip and mission, are supposed to happen next weekend.
>>
Damn. Friday? You were planning on doing the camping trip thing over next weekend. The one where you were going to tell everybody everything. Or at least something. Everything might be a little too much.

However, judging by the sporadic and violent urges that have been coming on over the past few hours, you’ll probably have to head up to Muir sometime during the week anyway to rip something to shreds, the bloodier, the better. You did leave it open-ended when you invited Baron. Vikrama’s cool with anything so far as you’re aware – maybe it can be a one night thing. You’ll have to figure it out, but not before you discuss all this merc business with Isaac. Gotta keep the parental figures in the loop.

“Count me in, I guess,” you tell Frederick and Alan. “So long as you have my money, I’ll have my self too. Just have to make sure to do a few things between then and now.”

“Glad to hear it,” says Frederick. He looks cautiously toward the door. “Do you want anyone looking out for you? I’m trying to conserve my power, but I’d want a spell or two if I’d been summoned to a private meeting with a rage demon.”

You snort at the chivalrous offer. “Nah, I can handle myself. He wants the job anyway, he won’t risk it. Anyway. Better go see what he wants, right?”
>>
>>37146706
>I’d want a spell or two if I’d been summoned to a private meeting with a rage demon.
Sierra is a rage demon. Arguably worse than Ranthix. At least you'll see him coming.
He could probably be sneaky if he needed to, but he wouldn't.
>>
>>37146706

“Farewell till Friday, then.”

“Nice to meet you, Sierra,” says Alan.

“Yeah. Ditto,” you say, heading to the door. Ranthix is waiting for you outside, and you both start heading toward the exit.

Ranthix speaks in an uncharacteristically moderate tone. “What are you doing?” he hisses.

>Didn’t I tell you? Whoops.
>Making money, getting power. You know the drill.
>I wouldn’t be much of an Imperiate if I didn’t go out and actually do stuff every now and then.
>What am I doing? What are you doing? You can’t just go around killing people for money!
>More like what are we doing, eh? Eh? Am I right?

That's the current theory, though it's unconfirmed. It's possible that he was pure human and Sierra's Verwelken parts came from somewhere else.

He does not respond to your needling.

“I’m making money, snatching up landwells. You know the drill. I don’t know, I’m not much of an Imperiate if I don’t try to get stronger so I can bust people over the head when they don’t listen to what I say. Gotta get busy.”

“Yes, it is a drill I know well,” Ranthix says. “But what matter calls for such secrecy?”

“Okay, honestly I meant to call you and forgot,” you say, not really all that sorry about it. “I kind of want to keep you being on my side a secret just in case, so I’m holding all the cards if it turns out we can’t trust Freddy.”

Ranthix scowls. “You must banish such foolishness, spawnling. There is insolent neglect and then there is ignorant disregard. Ignorant disregard is not a boon for the fledgling Imperiate.”

“I suppose not,” you say.

“Supposing not is a small if not wholly insignificant step in the correct direction,” Ranthix allows. “At least the plan devised by you is sound. We shall adhere to it in the case of Ferran treachery, in which case you shall repay his treachery a thousand fold with your own!”

“Bah. As you wish, spawnling,” Ranthix growls.

You and Ranthix burst into carefully choreographed maniacal laughter, and abruptly stop.

“But just so you know, it’s not actually betrayal,” you say. “It’s just if his plan doesn’t mesh with mine.”

“Yes, then you will betray him, you expressed yourself well in that regard,” Ranthix replies.

You decide not to pursue the point. A few minutes later, you come out on the street. You kind of want to get a ride from Ranthix, but you suspect it might not be a good idea. People might be watching or whatever. Before you take off down the sidewalk on your way home, you remember something you wanted to ask your sensei. “So uh. What was the deal with you breaking into the Masonic lodge place yesterday?”

Ranthix scowls. “A register of demons is kept there, beneath the earth. I desired to ascertain the United States’ knowledge of your denizens here in the region,” he says. “You are not on their paper lists yet. Your beguiling of the local governance has done you well in that regard, spawnling.”

“Yeah, I guess I am pretty beguiling,” you say.

Ranthix looks at you intently for a moment, as if trying to figure out how to say something. Finally, he speaks. “Sierra,” he states, with meaning and feeling surpassing anything you’ve felt from him before. “This is not as it was supposed to be.” Before you can react, though, Ranthix turns and stalks off. “FRIDAY,” he shouts back to you. “I ENSURED IT WAS AFTER THE HOURS OF YOUR CALIFORNIAN ACADEMY.”

It's not that hard to work out the basics. We're the daughter of the Imperiate, who he served with his life, and then some.

And instead of us being groomed to be Imperiate with Nydalis and having the legions of Cthonia at our service, we lost our family, and hid on Earth for over a decade. Even now we're forced to hide ourself, and try not to get on any lists.

He probably feels a pile of guilt for not being there to serve/teach us earlier, and instead spending his time bereft of real purpose.
>>
>>37148915
Yes, but IC, Sierra probably wouldn't be able to come up with conclusions like that.

Sounds about right.

Ranthix becoming sentimental might be something to worry about, but you suppress the urge to run after him and force him to talk. If he wanted you to understand, you’re pretty sure he’d make sure you understood. Badgering him is just going to make him angrier than usual, and you don’t need that the next time you have to do training stuff with him.

Instead, you find your bus home and get going.

You get home a little after noon. Hanging Zelathis up on the coat rack along with your gun holster, you start looking for Isaac, hoping he’s home and not out doing something Marshal-y.

“Where’d you get to so early?” Cassandra asks, spotting you from her prime reading spot in the living room.

“Where’s Isaac?” you ask, just to change the topic. You already know Isaac’s probably where he usually is – his study.

“Check the study,” Cass says, going back to her book.

Approaching, you can hear the crackly sound of the phonograph from the hallway, betraying the man within. You called it. The music’s jumpy, classy, and older than you are. The guy singer sings about whatever nonsense they sang about when Isaac was not older than the mountains. <Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rATftJiWdkw>

Or would you like to swing on a star?
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a pig?

You open the door and peek into the book-smelling room. Framed clippings from old newspapers and numerous photographs line the walls where books haven’t already achieved a monopoly. The old globe with its heavy wood frame sports several more color-coded pins than the last time you looked at it.

Isaac reclines in his fancy leather chair behind his desk, reading the paper. He looks over the edge of his paper at you. “Good morning, sunshine. I thought you’d drop in sometime.”

The song keeps going in the meantime.

But if you don't care a feather or a fig
You may grow up to be a pig

“Wait. You did?” you ask, a little derailed by the statement, and Isaac calling you sunshine. You’re not sure if he’s joking or if he’s serious, or whether you find it annoying or kind of nice. Or whatever.

Isaac sighs and puts down his paper, evidently set on having a serious discussion. “It’s no secret what Song’s nephew is putting together,” he says.

You stand in the doorway for a moment before you can puzzle together a reaction. “What’s Ms. Song’s nephew putting together?”

Isaac realizes he’s made a mistake. “Forget I said anything,” he says, a little too quickly.

You let Isaac have his victory. “Actually, there’s something else,” you say, walking in and closing the door. You go in and lean on the side of a bookcase. “So, hypothetically speaking, let’s say there’s like, a war.”

“Shoot,” Isaac says.

“So there’s this war. Is it like, a bad thing if you help one side? Like, all things being the same, you don’t really know anything about either sides. You don’t really care either, which side wins. Is it bad to help out?”

“Hypothetically speaking?”

“Right.”

“This isn’t hypothetically speaking.”

“… right.”

“I’d stay out of business that wasn’t my business,” Isaac says.

“Okay yeah, but it’s kind of more complicated,” you say. “So you know Fred, right? Ferran dude? I kind of screwed him over a while ago, and now I have this chance to do a merc job for him and get a landwell and stuff, and maybe help him out a little.” You go on to explain the broad strokes in detail. Or maybe the details in broad strokes.

“So you owe him a favor,” Isaac says.
>>
>>37150571

“Not in so many words. Just… I kind of don’t see a reason to be a jerk, and also there’s a lot of money being thrown around.” And the possibility of getting wings.

“And Ranthix is coming with you?”

“Yeah?”

Isaac considers this carefully. “I’m not going to make your decisions for you,” he says. “As far as what happens in Ferra, I’m as in the dark as you are. My only concern in all of this is your wellbeing. So if you genuinely feel this is the right thing to do, that looking back you won’t regret the decisions you’ve made, that’s all I need to know.”

“Cool,” you say.

“Just one second,” Isaac says. “There’s two kinds of being safe, and the second one is arguably hell of a lot more important. Having Ranthix isn’t enough for your physical safety. Now I know you can walk through walls and incinerate everything you touch, so I admit you can handle yourself in most situations," he says thoughtfully. "At the same time though, I don’t trust this Frederick character or his android, and I certainly don’t trust the Gracies. They’ve all made risky decisions in the past that got them in trouble.”

He continues. “Even Ranthix likes putting you in danger if he thinks it’ll make you stronger. If you’re going to go, you need more than just Ranthix with you. You need someone else you can trust to watch your back. If you can find someone like that to go with you, you can go ahead with your hair brained secret mission.”

Though if we do use Reeber as our companion it might be prudent to transfer the Landwell Boon from Rowan to Reeber for the trip. Though we'll probably end up taking Rowan with, who knows, maybe the angel wings and halo will let her talk any Knights Serpahis we stumble upon into leaving us alone.

Rowan isn't famous. There's nothing distinctive about her powers. They are monks on an alien world that has nothing to do with Earth. In fact, isn't everyone from Earth a demon according to them?

“Does Reeber count?” you ask.

“No.” There is no room for finagling here.

“Aw. Well whatever, I can manage that,” you say. “I’ll bring him along anyways too. And thanks a ton. You know. For trusting me and stuff.”

Isaac chuckles. “When I was your age, everyone expected me to save the world, and it worked out okay. It turns out kids like you save the world every day. I don’t think one landwell will be much of a problem.”

“So by the way… what is Ms. Song’s nephew planning? I mean, just because it’s all not a secret and stuff.”

Isaac becomes firm. “You’re already going to another plane to help pull off an interdimensional D-Day. Don’t test me.”

“Oh – almost forgot,” you say. “Can I like, take school for the rest of the week and go camping? Because, like, me and Ro have this kind of thing, and –“

Isaac retreats behind his newspaper. “That’s your mother’s business, not mine!” he says, already maxed out with the whole deal.

You deem it best not to push the subject, and leave to consult Cassandra. As it turns out she doesn’t have much against the idea, so long as you stay current on your assignments. You’re not allowed to fail anything this semester, which makes sense, because then you wouldn’t graduate. Fortunately it’s early in the grading period, and none of your classes show warning signs yet, so you can get away with stunts like this.

The next few days are busy. You get the particulars of your camping expedition hammered out with Rowan. You kind of expected her to be a little more annoyed about the prospect of missing so much school, but the prospect of breaking the secret chain with her friends seems to energize her. Also, it is agreed that ditching school is superior.

The appropriate invites are sent out via phone. Vikrama is delighted and somewhat dismayed that it’s taken you this long to come up with something this outrageous. You think she’s going to have a problem with her parents, but at the same time, Vikrama doesn’t let anything stand in her way for long. Baron’s already prepped on the idea, and jumps onboard after the generals are shared with him. All is going according to plan.

Moriah wishes you luck, but seems to prefer her regular schedule to fantastic adventures in the woods. She might still have some negative memories of you kind of breaking down with your whole violent episode thing. It’s fair enough.

Anyway, besides making some initial estimates at the gear and stuff you’ll need to take with you to Cerra, nothing much is in the way, except a couple days of school, and man, forget school. It seems to crawl by while you’re waiting for cool stuff to happen.

Eventually the day arrives – the day of the day of destiny’s day. So much planning has gone into this trip, and now is the time to reap all the rewards.

“Are you ready now?” Ro asks as you climb into the minivan. Her hands are on the wheel, and her foot’s on the pedal, and she looks at you with an anxious, slightly annoyed expression.

You take a second to pad down your sturdy leather jacket and backpack and everything to make sure you have everything that’s not in the back. Seems good enough.

“I have everything this time,” you say, impatient with your earlier failings to account for all the variables. So many variables. You whistle, and Reeber runs into the garage and leaps into the car in German Shepard form. He runs around a few times before he finds optimal seating.

>Let’s go pick up the baggage.
>You ready for this?
>So, I know I kind of told you about the job and how I needed somebody to come along, but I was wondering if you wanted to be the somebody that came along.
>I’m going to have to tag out after we get to Muir. Some stuff I have to take care of.

If it's just Ro with us, and she asks what 'stuff' (killin' fo bloodlust) is, I think we should just tell her.

You look over at Rowan. “You ready for this?” you ask, trying to be a little more meaningful than usual.

She takes a moment to reply. “It’s a big step, but I think it’s the right one.”

“Then let’s do it.”

“Okay. But put your seatbelt on first.”

With a groan, you do as she asks. She then triggers the garage door, and you set sail for high adventure.

While you’re heading to Vikrama’s, you figure you’ll broach the whole merc thing with Rowan. You’re not sure if Isaac had you asking her in mind, but it technically doesn’t go against anything he said. Also, if you’re really going to be on an alien planet or whatever, there’s not quite as much danger in anybody getting mad about demons and demonbane working together. Ro’s safety isn’t really a question either, because she’s pretty much already a magic cop in training. It’s not like she always comes back unscathed from helping Isaac with marshal work.

“So, I know I kind of told you about the job and how I needed somebody to come along,” you begin, “but I was wondering if you wanted to be the somebody that came along.”

Rowan laughs. “Wow. You’re actually asking me to come along on one of your secret things?”

Her reaction isn’t quite what you expected. “What do you mean, one of my secret things?”

“You know, like the time you raided the local goblins for the Magister.”

“That’s secret thing, not secret things,” you say, emphasizing the ‘s’. “Besides, he needed help and Isaac was busy. I was a deputy marshal at the time, it doesn’t count.”

“Huh okay, durr, what about when you went out in the middle of the night and killed Philostrathus?”

“That was an accident,” you argue.

“And when Waldric got you to clear out that demon chop-shop?”

“Demons-only Conclave stuff.”

“Oh, excuse me, totally different, you sure are good at not having secret things,” Ro says, rolling her eyes.

“Bleh!” you shout. “Do you want to do it or not?”

“Do you think you’ll get wings when you get the landwell?”

“I admit, that might be the dream, but it’s kind of like the lottery. You never know what you’re going to get.”

“I’m pretty sure you’re a little wrong about that,” Ro replies. “Sure, I’ll go with you. I never got a chance to head off plane before. It’ll be fun – like going to Canada or something.”

“What about Isaac? I don’t think he really wanted me to ask you.”

“Forget Dad. Do you want me to come with you?”

>Well duh. If you’re fine with it, then it’s a deal.

“Depends on if you want a share of the profit. Since I’m getting a hundred bucks, that’d be like what, fifty bucks split both ways? I don’t know if I can stretch my wallet that far.” You successfully get Ro to smile. “Well duh I want you to come, else I wouldn’t be asking. If you’re fine with it it’s a deal.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Rowan says. “Hey, maybe this is a good thing. The Knights Seraphis like Seraphim, I’m part Seraph. Anything comes up, just flash my halo and wham, we’re Scott free.”

“Yeah. That, or you could just flash your boobs,” you say.

Ro scoffs. “Hey!”

You snicker to yourself. You take a moment to feel out your brain space. You feel a pressure building at the back of your skull, a kind of uncomfortable feeling that you’re having trouble ignoring. “Anyway. Once we get up to Muir, I’m going to have to tag out. I’ve got stuff I got to take care of.”

“Stuff?”

“You know. Killing stuff.”

She sighs. “Do you really have to do that today?”

“All I know is the first time I didn’t know what was going on, and not killing stuff turned out to be kind of dangerous,” you explain. “Either I take care of it or I start getting kind of weird.”

“All right. Just make sure you don’t come back all covered in blood. That’s not the kind of impression we want to make.”

“Best foot forward and all that, I know,” you say. “Probably you, right? Feathery wings and stuff seems more friendly than not that.”

“There’s nothing bad about spiky claws and pointy teeth. Just look at Reeber.” She adjusts the mirror to get a better look at the hellhound, who is happily laid out on the middle seat. “Besides, anybody who really knows you knows you can sprout figurative claws at a moment’s notice. This is just letting people’s expectations meet up with reality.”

“And it’s all in movies anyway,” you repeat, half to yourself and half to Ro.

“Yep. It’s going to be great,” Ro says, also half to you and half to herself.

You drive along, eventually collecting both Vikrama and Baron from their residences, all packed up and good to go, tents and all. Ro and Vikrama are sharing a tent – one of those huge ones. Since sleeping is sometimes an issue where you’re concerned, you opted out of joining them for your own smaller, personal tent.

It’s a long drive up to Muir, and you’re all set for the whole of it.

“So my mom said I couldn’t go, and then I said I was going anyway, and my dad completely took my side. It was a breath of fresh air,” Vikrama says, feeling high off of skipping school.

“I just told my mom what was happening,” says Baron, laughing. He’s all camped out with a hunter’s cap and khakis and a fleece jacket and everything. “Her motto is that you can’t break rules she doesn’t make.”

“I wish my mom took that attitude more often,” Ro says.

“It’s nice for things like this,” says Baron. “It was spur of the moment, but I’m of the opinion that Seniors should be allowed to do whatever they want, whenever they want.”

“Here here!” cheers Vikrama.

The drive up is slogging on, and you’re starting to get kind of a headache. Except it’s not really pain, it’s kind of more of a buzzing drone in your head that makes it difficult to concentrate.

Don't fake feeling well; this is a serious problem. Our vanity is not as important as our and our friend's health and safety.

We don't have to be specific if asked, we're just not feeling well.
