One eye creaks open, blinking blurrily to clear the sleep from your lashes.
Too bright.

It is too bright. How are you supposed to sleep in like this?
Did Mom break branches training or something?
Ugh.

You yawn, jaw cracking, and open your eyes.

White moss glimmers across stone and bark, casting a clear light across the sleeping forms of your friends.
Oh.
You're still in he northern forest. Wendigo territory.

Sara, Lann and Jin are snoozing gently all over you- Even Sheszka is sleeping easily at your side, neatly wrapped in her blanket. Nin, on the other hand...

The moth is sitting atop your skull, apparently doing her best to read the runes and symbols formed by the moss over the stones.

Most scifi stuff wouldn't really work. Most of the fictional concepts used in haven't even been invented yet.

We could use the basic story premiss and rework it I guess. Droids become Golems. The Deathstar becomes a city destroying Floating Fortress. Instead of a crippled cyborg, Darth Vader was a fallen Wizard, remade into some sort of Homunculus. Yeah... We could make that work.
>>

>>37128081

>>
>>37128192
>she must be pretty dumb
You have no idea how to build a printing machine. The problem isn't the concept, its building the actual mechanical printing press.
>>
>>37128191
How about Avatar then? A fictional world with lots of wizards, but they're all restricted to one element with one exception and they use body movements and martial arts to help control their magic.
>>
>>37128192
>(i'm talking about the earliest ones
They most likely already got those, considering mother had a book intended for mass distribution to young adventurers, who are not the wealthiest people.
>>
>>37128259
Elemental magics exist here. Damn sure someone had invented various martial arts.

Not a stretch to think someone has combined them. In fact, ours and Moms spear-fighting styles are a combination of elemental magic and martial skills.

Probably shouldn't try retelling the story of Avatar until we're sure that exact thing doesn't already exist. It'll look like we're trying to tell a reality based story, but are butchering it because we don't know much about the subject of the story.
>>
>>37128259
The core problem of her trying to translate a highly visual story she doesn't actually have perfect memory of into a verbal one on top of having to translate several concepts and tropes into something her family could understand without being an accomplished writer or storyteller remains.

Ultimately, unless you actually are a really good story teller, knowing lots of movies won't help all that much in telling stories to someone from a vastly different culture and, if you are one already, you probably don't need to retell movies.
>>
We should obviously tell everybody about the plots of videogames.
Like dumb resident evil plots!
>>
>>37128414
Not to mention that Lyra probably never saw Avatar or Star Wars.
Even if she is from a future version of our world, as opposed to a altogether different one, those things will all have been far before her time and fiction from her time would probably be even harder to convey properly to her new family due to more cultural drift and relying on even further advanced storytelling mediums.
>>
>>37128414
I would imagine she can easily fill in the blanks herself. It doesn't even need to be the full tory. It completly suffices to tell the story of her favorite episodes and write down the individual stoies into collections.

The bigger problem I have is the assumptiom people will remember that story in her far-off space future.

Wether or not Lyra is actually a good storyteller, is a different question though. But we could tell Nin the stories and have her spin actual tales from it.
>>
>>37128414
I'm not saying to perfectly retell everything, just have some fun and entertain the family. When did this become about perfectionism? It would be fun to watch them comment and react as well.
>>
>>37128251

Owning things that can be copied in a world with no patent or IP laws isn't that great actually.
>>
>>37128510
My point was, the average person, has a idea of how it basically woirks, at best. But the actual mechanics and construction completly eludes them. Lyra is from a far of space future, where such knowledge would be even more obscure.

>>
>>37128414
>The core problem of her trying to translate a highly visual story she doesn't actually have perfect memory of into a verbal one on top of having to translate several concepts and tropes into something her family could understand

Good point. We'd have to practice our story telling skills and work out in advance how to convert foreign concepts into something they could understand.

Much better to start off telling spoken stories!

The Grimm Fairy Tales would be perfect! Well, some of them. A lot of them involve monsters being the bad-guys and eating people so it would be a bit awkward, so we'd have to pick and choose.

And childrens story we heard growing up would be fresh and new in this world.
>>
Lyra:
Resume missing soda and coffee.

And science fiction.

GOD you miss science fiction.
>>
>>37128615
If we're doing that much already, I'd suspect we're better off just making up our own stories while leaning heavily on our far larger library of known fiction and knowledge of tropes.

Blatantly ripping off stuff as opposed to jsut using things for inspiration should be kept to a minimum.
>>

>>
>>37128678
And then you're back to only ever producing a few dozen of copies of your books because you only have one printing press.

If you actually want to proliferate your books, you need to proliferate the printing press, at which point other people will very quickly get their hands on it.
>>
>>37128678
>but making letters, putting the in the right order getting some ink and pressing them to a paper for some time isn't really rocket science
Thats not a printing press. Thats the idea behind one, but there is a entire machine you need to build to accomplish that.

If you meant, "give others the idea for a mechanized printing press", that could work, if we get to the dwarves or others with understanding of mechanics like that.

You slip a hand free of the blankets, placing it gently against your wolf-eared friend's forehead.
Warm. Even breaths.

You smile.

It's more than you've gotten from her in her fevered state, for sure.

Antennae straighten, shoulders pull taut as the nearly leaps from her seat in shock.

You manage to grab her arm as her wings start to spread.
"Am I that frightening?"
"Na-na-na No! No! You just surprised me!"

You giggle a bit, pulling her back down to her seat as she blushes.
"Can you read that, then?"

She looks back to the moss writings, and shakes her head.
"It isn't anything I recognize. My lady."

>If you meant, "give others the idea for a mechanized printing press", that could work,

Sounds good. The earliest versions were hand pressed things. Just arranging the letters on a rack, ink them and manually press to the new page.

Faster, more automated versions were developed from there. Give them the basics and let them run with it.

It just gets more trader and adventurers as visitors. Maybe the harpies allow some more people to settle if they don't have enough workhands, but I can't remember that having been said anywhere yet.
>>

We have no power over that situation, because Lyra simply doesn't know.
If we want to do more nice things for our sister, we need to spend more time with her and get to know her better to learn about these things.

The thing is, the Monster Forest is fuckhuge and people are free to move in as they please. Seriously, it's to big and we have no organized government. Regulated boarders are not an option.

The other side of that is.... this is a Monster Forest. You are free to move in. But without the blessing of the local Clan / Tribe / Race that controls this patch, most are fucked. They'll be driven out or die from all the wild monsters.

Oakring was able to settle because they have the Harpies blessing. Any that tried to settle without their blessing, wouldn't be very safe.

The only way you could settle without blessings is if you tried to move in with military force and attempted to seize the land. But we all know how that would end.

Yes, and what I said applies to that. So long as the Harpies give their blessing and those people are welcomed into the town, they'll be fine. If they're not accepted... We need a way to get arachne to do what we want. Mostly because I want us all to run a communal "highways" project to make safer walkways for the forest residents.

Therefore, I say we need to find a commodity valuable to arachne in our travels. My guess is something delicious. or caffeine

You shake your head without looking back.
"I am just a spider, yes? A giant spider, but just a spider in the end."

He snorts, and even seated away from him you can feel the brush of wind. He really is gigantic.
"I have met bigger, little one."
"In any case, please don't pay her any attention. I am fairly certain she is not sane."

"Ahhhh. I see. Do you wish her healed as well? The mind is but another piece of the puzzle."
You are... Pretty sure he's joking.

He laughs, voice ringing.
Definitely joking then.

"I am only the sanest of them all, my lady! I offer my eternal service-"
"See? She is broken, yes."
"So it seems."

"Ah! That my lady would reject so humble a-"
"We can just pretend she is not speaking, yes? Can you tell me what the runes are?"

The skull turns to face the stones you've lain beside, taking in the glowing letters across the stone.
He nods, slowly.

"This one- A storm. Long ago. Fallen trees, the lake growing and growing."
A long finger points to another stone.
"That one- When I was born. The next- The birth of the city."
"History."

He nods, slowly.
"Yes. Stories. All of my stories, across my forest."
"Is this why wendigo live alone?"
"We etch our stories into the woods. Our lives."
"Mmm."

"Bigger... You have met Seranthis then? Or another, yes?"
The skull swings back to you again, gold eyes shining.
"It is good that the weavers remember. What he has done for you..."

You shake your head.
"I have met him, yes. Jin, too. Beneath the ruins."

The wendigo falls silent a moment, watching.
"You have met the forest-walker, little one?"
"Yes."

He strides forward, two easy steps putting him before you, and he kneels, each hand going to a knee. He watches you carefully, and you stay silent a moment before you speak again.
"When the city stood- Did you see it? Were you there?"

You can practically feel Nin holding her breath behind you.
She probably won't let this go for months.

"I was, child."
"Can you tell us? What it was like. The walls and buildings and people, yes?"
He looks up, eyes straining into the canopy.

His voice is slow. Measured, gaining in tempo and volume.

"It was a different time. The forest was brighter, then. Perhaps the world was darker. We do not leave the forest, little one. Not now, not ever. We belong to the woods."
He takes a breath.
"There was an arachne. And she came to us. To all the people of the woods. And she spoke of a brighter forest. Of comfort and strength and food- She promised each what they dreamed of."

"And they followed her, little ones. She built a forest, a maze of stone. She gave each a place. And then-"
"Then?"
"Then came the clouds."

"Small at first. Arguments. Foolishness between the people. Then the lizards broke the pact. The humans came. And the walls cracked."
He shakes his head.
"They fought over what to do. To chase, to speak, to build higher. In the end, they did little. And the humans came again."
>>
>>37130990
"Many fled. Many hid. Some fought. And when the humans broke the walls, the queen shattered the city. Some, I think, did not understand. But I was there, little one. They held themselves as partners, and spread pretty words about giving everything for the city. But the ran, and the queen saw that the city was gone. The walls stood, but it was no more. So she shattered the walls and the army alike."

"And the humans were lost, but so was the city."
Nin lies silent behind you.

Nin's voice, small as it is, breaks the heavy silence first, her words clear, no matter how quiet.
"But- It lasted. It lasted, didn't it? At least a while. For however long. Wasn't it- Wasn't it good? Wasn't it better?"

The wendigo is slow to answer, watching the moth with careful eyes.
"Than what?"
"This. This! All of this. Better than living with walls of fear and never knowing what is beyond the trees!"

"Are walls of stone so different?"
"I don't know. But- But I won't live like this. Not here. Even if it's nothing but a change of scenery. I won't- I'll-"

You run your hand through her hair as she stares down, eyes locked on her clenched fists, glaring as hard as she can. Not in anger. You know this expression, at least. You know all about trying not to cry.

"It is okay, yes. If we cannot find freedom, we will build it, Nin."
"Out of stone?"
"There are many, many things to build with. And time to do it in, yes."
"Mmm. Lyra-"

She smiles weakly, but she hugs you all the same, tucking her face into your shoulder and hiding there. You tilt your head, resting it lightly on Nin's, and letting ou glance back towards your host.

"Why did all the people flee, yes? Why did it end? Even without the city..."
"Hrrrmn. Too many people, pulling in every direction. Fighting their instincts, each other. And without the city and the queen, there was nothing to keep them in one place. They returned to their lands- They kept the pacts, if nothing else. The Arachne stayed close to the harpies, close to the moths. They watch the forest, the ruins."

A free hand rubs small circles over the moth's head, patting hair and offering comfort.
"Was it really over, then? Just like that?"
He shakes his head.
"It was years and years coming."

"Perhaps. I visited in passing. Cities hold nothing for us."
"Mmm."

"Yes."
"Your friend is safe. You are young. Find an answer all your own."

You nod.

>"The failures of the past need only be kept in mind, children. Not dwelt upon. You will find no solace there."

The wise learn from the mistakes of the past.

Clearly, being over centralized didn't work long term. Not surprising. Just look at human civilization, how much we pull apart with differences in priorities, ideology and self interest. Now imagine multiple races with fundamental differences and basic needs.

Something less centralized .... No big capitol city. Smaller villages in each territory, to allow coordination, trade and intermingling of the races for those who wished. But leaving most free to the old ways, as they wish.

Thoughts? Other ideas?
>>
>>37132484
A Federation that lets individual monsterkin govern themselves locally and a slim bueraucracy to manage matters of forest wide concern.
A city might be good location for that central body, but species that resent cities would probably feel excluded, so a mixed central settlement merging the individual nesting and housing styles would probably work better.
>>
>>37132484
We could start by holding a biweekly market in a fortified area.

That way we can learn about the different races in the area first hand and go from there. People would slowly get used to interact more with each other again.
>>
>>37132484
What about a series of monster states, maybe, all with their own governments and laws, but they all answer to and follow specific laws of one federal government?

We'll call it the Unified Provinces.
>>
>>37132551
>a mixed central settlement merging the individual nesting and housing styles
>Not a city

A city by any other name. Anon, you just described the old capitol city perfectly.

Based on what the Wendigo said, that was the problem. The different races mixing in ways that ran counter to their preferences and instincts.

I think decentralized is the way to go.

>individual monsterkin govern themselves locally and a slim bureaucracy to manage matters of forest wide concern.
Took the words out of my mouth. Smaller scattered villages to house the 'Local Councils' and bureaucracy.
>>
>>37132738
>A city by any other name. Anon, you just described the old capitol city perfectly.
No thats exactly what it not was, the city was built from stone, which none of the settlements of the monsterkin are. That was exactly the problem, it was too unlike their own settlements, and that made them feel trapped.

Cities are not the only kind of settlement.
>>
>>37132551
I like the concept of city because it allows for a centralized body to govern the massive amount of territory that is the forest. In addition to which it is infinitely easier to defend from any invading force, what with it's massive defensive structures.

Just because some monsters might be against the concept for fear of loosing autonomy doesn't mean it should be abandoned. Even if a city was used primarily as a symbolic capitol for a somewhat federated government, it would still be vital to any kind of state the monsterfolk might build.
>>
>>37132772
>the city was built from stone. That was exactly the problem

You think the building material used was the issue? Go back and read again.
>>
>>37132831
You know what they say from people who repeat the same action expecting different results.

A city for all, didn't work. A sort of central settlement is proabably necessary to house the goverment, but that can be a fairly small, walless affair. Its a friggin forest full of monster races, there is a whole lot more than walls we can built for defesnive structures, that won't make the people uncomfortable.
>>
>>37132831
>I like the concept of city because it allows for a centralized body to govern the massive amount of territory that is the forest.

From the description of wendibro, it was a centralized population that was the problem.

A fixed seat of power with representatives of the races could work, but a full scale city is evidently a problem.
>>
>>37132889
>>>>>>The Point

>>>>>Your Head
>>
>>37132974
At least its a problem right from the start. The Queen tried to force urban migration which was probably the issue, over time a central settlement can grow into a city when generations grow up that become increasingly more familiar with that lifestyle.
>>
>>37132985
The irony, it burns!

>"Why did all the people flee, yes? Why did it end? Even without the city..."
>"Hrrrmn. Too many people, pulling in every direction. Fighting their instincts, each other.

Too many people living together, used to a very different lifestyle. Different priorities and agendas. Different wants and needs.

These are the things that divide people. These are the sources of contention.

Why the fuck would the building material matter? If they all hated stone architecture, they'd just build it out of something else.

That's a non-issue.
>>
I say we just get folk to try to patrol their areas better, and try to get spiders and others to make safe zones to go through.
>>
>>37133052
Yeah, that could happen over time with gradual cultural change. But to be successful it's something you need to let happen naturally. Or not, as the case may be.
>>
>>37132974
Keep in mind this is a Wendigo we're talking about, and it's pretty clear they are not entirely unbiased on the subject of urban settlements. There are plenty of monsterfolk who would love the idea, notably the harpies and moths.

As a political structure, it doesn't have to be the sole body of decision making in the entire kingdom, but a central settlement which holds the bureaucracy and trade.

As a physical structure it could house and defend the more social breeds of forest folk and a possible trading hub with the outside world.
>>
>>37133124
I do like the webhighway idea, it would allow for faster travel among the different parts of the forest.
In those parts of the forest no one else lives, we could let Arachne settle nests as waystations of sorts, since they need to settle far away from other races anyway, and due to their enormous natural strength make perfect guardians.

> notably the harpies and moths
There is a notable difference of lifestyle between villages and cities though, so we don't know if both of them would actually enjoy those.

The problem with a city that doesn't house all the races would be a overrepresentation of certain races in the governing body, which could cause problems again.
Even more so, because it would mean this city dwelling population would develop culturally very far away from the majority of the population living in the forest, creating the strong threat of a isolated urban elite developing ove rtime.
>>
>>37133169
Yes, at least some would be happy with that. There would even be individuals of races that, as a whole, didn't favour city life that would like it themselves.

Creating a single large settlement would probably be less practical, at the start at least, than many smaller settlements.

Those that wanted to mix would be able to do so, while the others wouldn't need to.
>>
>>37133266
>many smaller settlements.
That's definitely something that needs to be done. We're trying to build a country here, not a single city. Keeping in touch with the more isolated tribes would be next to impossible without them.

>>37133226
Again, there's no reason politcal activity and decision making needs to be limited to a single settlement. I'm talking about urban engineering here, not political structure.
>>
>>37133362
>there's no reason politcal activity and decision making needs to be limited to a single settlement
Not all political activety no. But there needs to be a place for the governing body that makes decisions for the whole of the forest community if we want a united forest. Assuming that is what we want of course, that might take the form of a collection of settlements. A wandering court ala Charlemagne. A forest Althing. A small settlement just for that purpose or many many others, but there needs to be a place where that central governing body can gather, simply for ease of communication.

Its a lot more efficient to send messenger from and to a central place, then to send them between dozens of places.

In a Federation of course there will be political activety in a lot of other places besides the central governing body, might even be the majority of it.
>>
>>37133362
>I'm talking about urban engineering here, not political structure.

It would probably be easiest not to bother. Just let it happen naturally.

Founding, at least, small settlements to house the local administration and required bureaucracy in each would be a must. After that, just leave it to the races involved. Those that liked the urban like would settle in larger numbers.

Those that like mixing more freely with other races would make them more welcome to settle.

Of course, we'd offer support and resources to allow growth, but we'd leave the decision making to them.

...... And holy crap, look at this discussion, Nin had corrupted us all.
>>
>>37133481

There is a moth in all of us anon!
>>
>>37133493
>There is a moth in all of us anon!

If Dr. Love had his way there will be.
>>
>>37133478
>if we want a united forest
It might be better to just do things that allow for easier travel and communication among the forest races. It can grow together organically.

The example of the Harpiey, Moths and Spiders show how certain races fit together naturally, we just need to encourage that and everything else will come with time.
>>
