Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you meditated and scarred your sister for life.

You slip out of your sister's room while she occupies herself with bathing and reconsidering the choices she's made in life. Honestly, your oud playing wasn't that bad. It was horrendously terrible, but you don't think it merits an identity crisis. Closing the door behind you, you set off towards your father's office. So far as you recall, that is where he usually spends his mornings.

You pause at the dining room, diverting your course and shouldering your way past the heavy curtain which hangs in the doorway. You find your mother still sipping her tea, appearing to all the world still asleep. Only the rhythmic lifting and lowering of her cup to and from her lips tells you she's conscious. Duha seems to have finished her breakfast in your absence, and as you enter she speaks. “I take it Pratima will be joining us shortly? I heard some sort of horrendous screeching a little while ago, I assume you used some sort of artifact to wake her.”

You wave a hand vaguely in the air. “Something like that. Do you happen to know if our father is awake?”

Duha shrugs her shoulders. “He ought to be awake by now. He usually is by the time I leave for the barracks.”

You nod, glancing towards the slave standing against the wall and snapping your fingers before turning your attention once more to Duha. As you begin to speak, the slave presses against a panel set into the wall and a section of the wall opens with a click, closing only a moment later as the slave fetches you breakfast. “I need to speak with him about the arrangements we made last night, it shouldn't take long. Meet me in the garden when you're ready. You know some magic already, right?”

She pushes herself to her feet and stretches out her limbs briefly before responding. “I know a little fire and a little water. I'm not particularly good with either. My captain had some Grandmaster or another wander in and look at me when I joined, it's standard procedure for all the recruits. Apparently I've above average magical potential, but it's nothing spectacular. I'll never Master any of the elements, I just don't have the talent.”

It's strange to think that, were you raised in Anthus, every one of your siblings likely could have gotten into the academy. They probably could've gotten jobs as professors and gone on to be respected and capable Vatis, by human standards. You can't help but wonder why it was that humans developed a crippled ability to use magic after they diverged from the Elves so long ago.

You focus once more on the situation at hand as a click sounds through the room and a section of the wall swings open, a slave dressed in resplendent white slipping inside and pushing the door closed behind him. He holds out a plate weighed down with slices of smoked sausage, a fried egg, and a few cheese-filled borek pastries. In the center of your plate is a cup of thick, black coffee.

You kick back the coffee in one swig, careful to avoid the black sludge at the bottom. It burns as it goes down, but certainly does drive out any weariness you felt after several nights without sleep. You absentmindedly hand off the cup to the slave while addressing your sister. “Well, what I have in mind shouldn't prove too taxing then. I know Pratima has those gems in her palms, so I doubt she'll have any trouble with it either.” You figure you'll simply teach them a useful effect, or maybe show them a few good meditation methods. Perhaps have them compete in some task or another.

With that, you excuse yourself and shoulder past the curtain in the doorway, absentmindedly popping one of the borek pastries into your mouth whilst navigating the halls towards your father's study, plate balanced in one hand. It isn't long before you're standing before a set of double doors, your father's voice filtering through only indistinctly. You knock three times, and your father's voice calls out. “Come in!”

You push the door open and shut it behind you. Your father is sitting at his desk, and standing next to him is an attractive Samjan woman you don't recognize. She's dressed in a heavy black dress with gold trim, clothing rather unsuited for El-Amin, and she wears more golden bangles on her arms than you can ever recall seeing on a single person. Her hair has been braided and tied back into a style you'd call strange, but recognize as belonging to noblewomen from Marqash.

Your father is the first to speak. “Mikhael, this is Shirin of the Samara clan. I hired her a few years ago to serve as an envoy for our family. She's proved indispensable.”

You're familiar with the Samaras. One of your fellow apprentice's master was a Samara. If you recall correctly, they're a relatively minor clan, the main line is nobility but there is a common branch as well. If you recall correctly they were once the Satraps of Selepp, before that city broke away and became the seat of the Samrat of Kulkarni. These days they're simply Bays, they rule a handful of villages on the coast near Marqash, and if you recall correctly they're primarily renowned for producing a number of powerful Vatis.

You bow, touching two fingers to your forehead and chest. “I am pleased to make your acquaintance, Shirin. I assume you'll be sent to the Demirs in the hopes of negotiating an advantageous marriage?”

She returns your gesture briefly before nodding. “Correct, and I have you to thank for finally convincing your father to negotiate peace. I have been urging the man to do so for months but he has proved stubborn.” Her voice is sweet and lilting, you'd go so far as to describe it as musical. She turns to face your father. “If you'll excuse me, sir. I believe I've all I need to bring negotiations to a satisfactory conclusion.”

Your father waves her off, and she makes for the door. You step aside to let her pass and she nods politely before slipping out. With her gone, you cross the room to stand before your father's desk, taking a bite of sausage while you gather your thoughts.

You come to a decision, swallowing your food before speaking. “So, here is what I propose regarding the goods I'd have you sell. Fifty percent of the profits go towards my investment in the mine, while the remaining half you hold in trust for me until such a time as I return to collect it. I'll be leaving you four chest and six fairly large crates, where would you have me leave them?”

Your father waves a hand in the general direction the front of the estate. “Have them brought to the gates, I'll have them brought to one of our warehouses by the docks. I want to inspect them before I start seeking out buyers.”

You pull your cloak out wide. “I have them with me, actually. They're in my cloak.”

Your father squints at you, perplexed. “How do you have chest and crates in your cloak? It doesn't have any pockets, and that aside they wouldn't fit anyway.”

You remove your cloak, laying it out flat on the wooden floor. You pull it away, to reveal a crate sitting neatly on the floor. You lay it out flat once more, whipping it away to reveal another crate. You repeat the action until you've set out a cluster of eight crates and arrayed in front of it four chest. Your father seems both impressed and confused by the spectacle, but doesn't say anything until you've finished.

“How does that work? I know of no magic which would allow you to store items in nothing, or which would mimic such a talent.”

You shrug your shoulders. “It's not proper magic, it's an enchantment. A portal to a separate reality, or separate area of reality, that's more or less empty. It's an old artifact, so far as I know, that I was given in a vault beneath Anthus. I showed you that when I told my story last night, didn't I?”
(1/2 or 3)
>>
Your father nods. “Yes, yes. The three skeletal figures. I recall, I just didn't quite know what it did. You said it was a portal but I assume you used it to call forth monsters to do your fighting for you, not store your loot.” Your father waves a hand dismissively, standing from his chair and making his way to the row of crates you've left on his floor. “Well, it's of no matter. Open these for me, I'd like to take a look at what's inside.”

You do as your father bids you, drawing a dagger from your cloak and using it to pry off the lids. It's a simple task, you've already removed the wax seal and the nails which held the lids in place. You go down the row, hauling off each lid and setting them down next to the crates. Then you simply flip open the chest, they're not locked.

You take a moment to fill two bags, one with gemstones and the other with black pepper. The former will prove invaluable in whatever experiments you conduct. The latter will prove invaluable should you ever find yourself in need of some emergency funds. You've heard that a pound of black pepper can sell for dozens, even hundreds of gold in some parts of the Northern lands. Finally you pluck a few lumps of ore from one of your crates of iron ore, tucking them into your cloak. It might prove useful should you ever wish to meditate on either Metal or Earth magic.

Once you've finished, your father goes from crate to crate and chest to chest, inspecting the goods within. He taste the opium and the spices, burns a chunk of the incense in a small bowl on his desk, runs the silk through his fingers, studies the iron ore and silver ingots, and holds the gemstones up to the light.

(2/3)
>>
Once he seems satisfied he nods, dropping the gems he was holding back into their chest. “Some of the stones will need to be cut and polished, and some of the ore could be of better quality; however, by and large I am pleased with what I see. I shouldn't have any problem selling them but I couldn't give you an estimate regarding what we'll make. How long will you be in town?”

You shrug your shoulders. “I'm unsure, but not long. I've much to attend to elsewhere. I would say a few days at least, a week or two at most.”

Your father nods. “In that case I will send an envoy to your master, former master, when I've sold off the stock. I would estimate a few months, at least. I'll be sending the spices, silks, and incense overseas to Aleamond. That's usually a two month journey depending on the weather.”

That's about what you expected, but more than you'd hoped if you're being honest. You've no idea where you'll be in two month's time or even if you'll still be alive.

>That's fine, even if you don't make it back to collect it will still benefit your family.

Additionally, can we thank him afterwards for something not entirely unrelated to this?

I'd like to thank him for being so accepting of us on our return. Initially, given how we parted the city and how irregularly we visited the family, it was ambiguous how we'd be treated upon returning. It's nice to have family to rely on. Just don't say so in an ass-kissy way of course.

You sigh. “Well, that will have to do I suppose. If everything goes as planned I'll either be returning from or deep inside the Elaudian jungle in two month's time, or perhaps I'll be long past that and on to some other task. I couldn't honestly tell you. Regardless, I should be able to find time to swing through El-Amin.”

Your father adopts a look of concern, brows scrunching together. “I had hoped you would at least try and stay in some sort of contact with your family. I didn't relish worrying over whether or not you'd been eaten by some creature in the waste, or killed by the guards, and I can tell your your mother didn't either.”

You think about that for a moment. You suppose you do have an extra communication brooch. All of your comapnions have one already except for Zahak, who doesn't really seem to need one. You'd considered giving it to Ricky, but that seems unwise now that you've consulted him on the matter. You'd also considered giving it to your old Master, since you'd like to be able to consult with him should you ever need to. However, it would likely please your father were you to give the brooch to him instead; your family are on good terms with your old Master but you think they might be a touch afraid of him.

>>
>>37111463

>>
>>37111621
>>37111733
Yeah. Study the runes, acquire the correct materials, make it (and hope we're skilled enough not to screw that part up), and then enchant it, not fail the inscriptions or finalization that we don't quite know the complexity of yet, and then give it permanency.
Certainly not "just as easily".
>>
>>37111823
We won't know without trying
>>
>>37111823
It may require more than one enchantment too.
Since there was the hair part of the brooch and the clasp itself that held it within.
It really doesn't seem like it would be an easy enchantment either because its functions are mechanically amazing when compared to enchantments like Chryssas mace and our blanket.
>>
>>37111823
We'd not only have to study them, we'd have to figure out what they mean. Or could we just copy runes we don't understand and make them work?
>>
>>37111823
I don't even think we have nearly enough vys to make an enchantment of such complexity/size.
>>
>>37111874
Quite right. But we do know it would take a nice amount of effort given our previous attempts at all similar things (blanket, the gate, etc). So we should try, sometime. But we should try to solve our lack of a spare brooch by simpler means first. Our gold and the markets and merchants of El-Amin are those simpler means.

“I'll leave a method to contact me with my old Master, if you ever want to speak with me you should only need to seek him out. That way you won't have to worry about whether or not I've run off and died in some forgotten ruin. Regardless, I won't be leaving for a few days yet.”

Your father nods, placated. “Good. Should anything happen and that line of communication fail, I'll keep your money in trust for a year. If you return after that time you need only find me, I should have more than enough money to cover the debt I would owe you.”

He seems to consider your business concluded with that, and navigates the mess of boxes and crates back to his desk, where he has a neat stack of scrolls waiting for him on one side and an open book on the other. Half of the page he's turned to filled with a familiar illegible chicken scratch. Your father has always used a shorthand to keep his records. Apparently it's been in your family line for quite some time, but only two people at any one point know how to read it: the clan head and the heir apparent.

As your father carefully extracts a scroll from the pile and sets it out in front of him, an idea occurs to you. He's a nobleman of vast wealth and extensive connections. Could he, perhaps, acquire a brooch on his own? You extract the artifact from your cloak and make your way to his desk, setting it out in front of him. He turns his attention to you once more, mildly annoyed you would guess. “Actually, father. Before I go. This is the artifact I use to communicate with my compatriots and colleagues at any distance. Should you find something like it, tell my Master to inform me. I'll be able to attune the brooch so we can stay in contact.”

Don't worry about it.
The brooches we got from Sadik weren't all that expensive anyways, and it was a big batch.
>>
He plucks up the brooch, turning it over in his hands briefly. After a short while he nods, passing the artifact back to you. “Seems simple enough, I'll tell my associates to keep an eye out for anything like it. I have a friend who specializes in the study of magical artifacts, he might be able to get me something of the sort.”

You tuck the brooch back into your cloak, pick up your plate of food, and bow to your father, going through the usual motions before you make for the door. You pause at the threshold, turning to face your father again. “One last thing, and I apologize for taking up so much of your time. It wouldn't feel proper to leave without expressing my gratitude. Truly, I have to thank you for receiving me so warmly. I had been unsure of what you'd think of me after my banishment, especially considering the infrequency of my visits.”

Your father smiles broadly. “Think nothing of it, you're my son. It is a heartless man who can turn away his own flesh and blood in their hour of need. Regardless of how they've acted in the past.”

Your business concluded you slip out of your father's office. You find Pratima waiting for you, dressed as she was when you first saw her in that ridiculous armor of hers, if you can even call it armor, and with a sword on her hip. She speaks as you close the door behind you. “I trust things went well with our father?”

You nod, brushing past her on your way towards the courtyard and motioning for her to follow. “Well enough, it was mostly just working out minor details and wrapping up a few loose ends. You know some fire magic, correct?”

Pratima rubs the back of her neck uncomfortably as she falls into step behind you. “I know a little bit, yeah. I'm terrible though. I end up burning myself more often than whatever it is I'm targeting.”

Your scrunch up your nose. That shouldn't be the way it is. Fire magic should rarely, if ever, burn the caster. Unless she's targeting herself, she must be doing something very, very wrong. Either that or she really does simply have no talent at all for magic. “We'll need to work on that, then.”

You brush aside the curtain which separates the courtyard from the rest of the house, using a simple Manipulate spell to spear a piece of sausage on the end of your fork and maneuver it into your mouth. You find Duha stretching in the central square which the courtyard foliage is arrayed around. She stops once she sees you, standing straight. Pratima moves to stand next to her, seeming vaguely uneasy about the whole situation. You can't imagine why she'd be nervous, it's just a lesson.

>You'll just have them meditate on Fire magic by shaping a flame, correct any mistakes they're making in terms of channeling vys.
>They should improve their knowledge of Water magic. Duha already knows some. You'll slice open your arms and have them meditate on healing you together.
>You should referee a game of siege between the two of them, using Fire magic presumably. Come to think of it, maintaining an army of little fire-people would probably be quite taxing.

How about a combination?

Pratima is injuring herself with fire, so we ask her to cast a fireball and then try to detect what she's doing wrong and teach her how to correct it.

Duha isn't particularly good at magic, but water magic healing would be really good for her so we can try giving her insights into the use of healing through water magic, by also correcting her attempts to heal minor wounds we inflict on ourselves.

>Soma's writing
>TIME FOR IDEAS

Since Soma has as any careful DM would dutifully avoided answering my ideas on enchanting through his Ask Page I'll post 'em here for examination through many critical gazes.
(This is all shit for when we have some free time for experiments and stuff, probably much later than now. Last section is just a bunch of theory given in-character knowledge, pretty sparse though, we know shit but also don't.)

An anon a while ago asked if it'd be worth studying the lattice of the world that we mess with while enchanting, writing down the designs of the universe we see there. The response from Soma was it'd be worth a shot.

What I propose as an accessory to that is we try to study how our Metamagics and Effects affect the designs of the universe. For instance create+poison was revealed a long time ago to be able to create a liquid poison, we could study the lattice and see if there's a rune for what we actually created in that case.

For things that are more direct and don't linger beyond their casting we can try studying the designs of the universe as they're changing or being casted.
Either by way of a companion using earth magic to erode, or any other kind of physical manipulation magic, to see how the lattice/designs of the universe are affected by their abuse through Vys.

Other ideas that've come to mind include but are not limited to meditating upon the lattice of a well known stormy coast to attempt to perceive lighting in the designs of reality, and similarly for how vatis gathering vys affects the lattice, or if vys in general has a rune we're able to perceive, comparing different metals/substances/gems/animals to see how or if they're represented differently in the lattice, seeing what the potion of incorporeality looks like, looking at what holes/the portals in reality we've come across look like relative to the lattice, and many other ideas besides.
(1/2)
>>
>>37112409
Shortcuts are not good for development, especially for low level vatis.
>>
>>37112443
In addition to that I suspect our view of the lattice is limited by our perspective of it, given the view we had when we enchanted the blanket. That's of course an isolated example since we've really only enchanted once, and it'd be nice to eventually test if it is or isn't the case since either way carries its own massive implications for all future experimentation.

Note; following is real deep brah. Prepare yo' mind for THEORY.
As far as the deeper parts of enchanting go my purely in-character colored theory is that since runes are representative of the designs of the universe and they each work as parts of the whole it makes sense to me that all the more complex runes/effects/metamagics would take many runes working together to work at all, IE the rune for Fire isn't present or "realized" into the lattice until something is actually burning and the conditions for something to burn have been met with other runes. Likely similar for lightning, ice, etcetera. So logically there must be preset conditions for certain runes to appear and exist in the first place, and since there are runes for creating, containing, sustaining, embiggening, and diminishing I believe this is something that is mirrored in the current mechanics of our enchanting as we understand them, at least as far as the methods for inscription to finalization goes.

This would mean that as far as each constituent part of runic reality is concerned, all things can be changed if you can comprehend how it works and have the power to change it, but changes are always correspondent to the structure of the greater runic reality and its lattice, and therefore always subject to it in some measure. The knowledge of enchanting theory we gained from Atma also appears to support this, while also hinting at other things for another time.

She was stated to be bad from the start.

Additionally, when you throw the idea that Vys is poison to the soul (from Varvars notes) that allows the magically inclined to affect reality in small, temporary, and mostly insignificant measures, (via effects and metamagics), this shit starts getting really fuckin' neato, AND FUCKING THEN, when you include the mechanics of the Void we've explored things really kick off.

All in all before Mik dies I advocate he write works related to all this and his experiences in a flaming grimoire that is composed of his own frozen blood and the ichor of void creatures which also turns itself incorporeal and searches for a kinder vatis if you mistreat it along with more simplified copies of our theories (that aren't enchanting intructions) in order to esnure we become the Al-Ghazli Newton ibn Hayyān of history for all millenia yet to pass!

All he's saying is don't discount the nature of a crutch, which is also tied to her effort. She may think she's better at magic than she actually is after all, since that the impression a crutch gives people.

Like a cloak that makes you sneaky, or a staff that lets you see living creatures through walls, the difference between us being we know them for what they are. She may not know or have had the warning of how relying on crutches block advancement.

She said she doesn't know how they work before when we asked her about them, that's enough to know where the problem lies.
She'll just have to learn how to adjust to them. Which is hopefully what that nice success will do.
>>
>>37112610
No, I expect people interested in enchanting to read it. If you're not then you obviously shouldn't.
>>
>>37112485
Alright lads, let me dumb down that incredible wall of text for you. Basically, what this Anon is saying that Soma's world functions according to a set of magical "coding," and that the things we do, such as creating, poisoning, beaming, etc. are just alterations we "write" into the code. The Source Code might say, there is fire. We use vys to rewrite the equation to, "The fire shoots in a beam through that motherfucker's chest." He then goes on to imply that enchanting might just be a permanent, as opposed to temporary change in the "coding." He suggests that if we meditate on how the "code" changes when we do things like poisoning or creating fire, we can learn the specific rune as it will appear in the "world code."
>>
>>37112571
I think she knows she sucks.

>>
>>37112624
True, but i view the gems differently than the items since they are basically (fuck its the cyber punk shit, but i forgot it) so its not truly a crutch, but an improvement that she has to master. though some people calling everything a crutch is a tad annoying

Nah, context and examples to reinforce them are what give the framework for a simplifications to make sense in the first place.
One way or another the details of how and why would have to be shown, it's easier to present them first. That way the details are available for whoever wherever 'n all that gum.

>>
>>37112745
Can't explain anything without first understanding it, so yes, we have to do that first.

That's why the in-character stuff was presented as Mik would understand it, so as to too "out there" for the character to consider experimenting and making crazy stuff. Not that we actually need more impetus for crazy stuff, but yeah.

Well, yeah. They're blunt weapons that rely on body momentum and strength. If someone has two of them and can use both then they're not gonna play around.
IIRC swedes used to dual wield war hammers and just rip into armor without giving a fuck.

It's a distraction technique.
>>
You stare at the two of them for a time, thinking about just how it is you want to teach them. Eventually, you come to a decision. “Duha, I think you're probably the better Vatis between the two of you. That in mind, I'm going to help Pratima first. It shouldn't take long for me to figure out what it is she's doing wrong.”

Duha simply nods, so you turn your attention to Pratima. “I need you to hurl a ball of fire at me. Don't worry, I doubt you'll be able to hurt me. Give it everything you've got. It ought to allow me to figure out how you're channeling your vys and whether or not you're doing anything wrong on that front.”

She nods, and you channel just a touch of Nature magic. Immediately the world is covered in a green film, Duha and Pratima appearing as bright, people-shaped masses of green light. Duha is without a doubt the brighter of the two, though compared to your Master, Zahak, or many of the other more magically capable people and creatures you've interacted with she appears rather dim. Pratima, on the other hand, is almost as bad as Profectus in terms of vys pool. Her limbs barely appear as hazy, ethereal things through the filter of Nature magic. At least her core, her actual reserves, seem large enough to make casting feasible.

Pratima begins to gather vys. You see her green light filter from her abdomen out to her right arm. Then, something odd happens. The vys is ripped free of her reserves, vanishing. Then a moment later a ball of roiling green flame is hurled from her hand towards you. It's a simple enough matter to snuff the flame as it approaches, leaving nothing behind save the excess vys which was spilled into the surroundings when she cast.

(1/5 or 6)
>>
You cut off the flow of vys and the world returns to normal. Pratima is clutching her hand, she has blisters all over the back of her hand and much of her forearm from casting the fireball. Oddly enough, her palm is fine. With a gesture you heal the damage done, the blisters receding in an instant. She jumps just slightly in surprise, turning her attention towards you. “Did you- nevermind. What am I doing wrong? Magic isn't supposed to hurt the caster.”

You fold your arms in front of your chest. “Well, what I believe is happening is that the gem embedded in your palm reads what it is you'd like to do and rips away the vys necessary to cast the spell, making it the gem's spell rather than your own. Thus, you're harmed by the spell you're trying to cast. You could try wearing thicker gloves, but what I would recommend is trying to cast without using the gems. If that doesn't work, the gems were likely intended for a Vatis much more powerful than you are. You could try securing a stack of magical tomes and just reading through each of them. Believe it or not, just reading can help you use vys more efficiently and gather more when you meditate.”

She wrinkles her nose. “But what will that do to help me cast without the gems screwing everything up? Will that let me just ignore the pain, or avoid hurting myself?”

Honestly, you're not entirely sure how the gems work and so can't properly answer. “I can't say, but I do have a few theories. Maybe a larger reserve of vys to draw from will prevent the magic used by the gems being disconnected from your pool of vys. Maybe it will allow you to better control the gems themselves, and thus put a stop to the disconnection that way. Regardless, it couldn't help. If all else fails I could always cut off your hands and grow you new ones without the gems.”

She looks at you wide eyed, taken aback. “Cut off my hands?! By the gods, Mik! How would that help at all?!”

(2/5 or 6)
>>
>>37114076
>what is the hook sword, what are katars, etc.
>>
You hold up your hands placatingly. “Look, it's perfectly safe. My friend Darzi, you met her last night. You saw the scars on her arms, yes?” Pratima nods, and you continue. “She used to have those scars all over her body, many of them worse than the ones that remain. I cut out the scar tissue and healed the flesh cleanly. There was also a soldier who lost his leg while traveling with me, and I grew him a new one. Then of course there was the brand on my cheek I cut off so that I could regrow the flesh without a scar. It's an option, is all I'm saying.”

Pratima shakes her head. “Well, let's try the options that don't require amputation first. You said I should just try to cast without using the gems, right? I'll try that. Seems simple enough.”

You're not so sure. From your perspective, it seemed as though the gems forcefully ripped the magic from her reserves and used it to cast the spell. However, you see no reason for her to avoid trying. “Focus on your reserves, and the vys you're drawing forth to cast the spell. Try to...” You search for a way to phrase this. “-forcefully keep hold of it. I can't really properly describe what it's like to feel your vys but it ought to be self-evident.”

She nods, and you draw your ornate dagger from your cloak before turning your attention to Duha. “Now then, for your lesson-” You press the point of the blade against he flesh at the crook of your elbow, dragging it down your forearm to your wrist and leaving a deep gash in its wake. Duha winces, but doesn't ask questions. Pratima has assumed a meditative pose and is too focused to notice. “-Heal the wound I just caused, it should be simple enough since it's a clean cut.”

(3/5-6)
>>
>>37114022

You, sir, are a pestilence on society! I say! Your mother was a hamster, and your father smells of elderberries!
>>
You sit down, holding your arm out in front of you. It's bleeding quite a lot, but it doesn't particularly hurt. You numbed the pain with just a touch of Water magic. Duha, for her part, moves quickly to follow orders. She sits down across from you and folds her legs beneath herself, slipping quickly into a trance. She seems quite familiar with the process; a good sign. However, as she begins to channel magic you find flaw in her methods. You don't even need to use Nature magic to see what she's doing wrong, it's a problem you had too when you were just starting out.

Your wound is healing, but only in irregular spurts. Not all at once, and not gradually. Sometimes much of the wound will close, sometimes a few fleshy strands will bridge the wound and start to pull it closed, other times it won't heal at all. You pull a mass of water from the air and form it into a ball, hurling it at her. She's pulled suddenly and violently from her trance as the water splashes her face.

Before she can complain, you launch into a lecture. You explain just what it is she's doing wrong and tell her exactly the same thing your master told you when you were an apprentice making the same error as she is. She must relax, and let the vys flow as it wishes. She shouldn't attempt to micromanage the spell after she's already cast it. She seems annoyed, but doesn't voice complaint. Rather she merely attempts to do as she's told.

This time when she sets out to heal you things proceed at a much better pace. Your wounds is knit closed at a slow, gradual pace, everything proceeding more or less evenly. You're about to slice your arm open again when a burst of flame off to your left incinerates a trellis of flowering vines. Only moments later, as flames begin to spread to near-by plants as well, Pratima leaps to her feet with a triumphant shout of “HA! Fuck that plant! I did it! By the gods I didn't scorch my arms!”

(4/5-6)

>just tell people about our close friend's source of trauma and complex about her body image
Wow, Mik is still a jerk I see.
>>
>>37114121
What are exceptions that prove the rule?
>>
You extinguish the flames with little effort and snap your fingers to get Pratima's attention. It's something of a bad habit, considering it's generally how someone draws the attention of a slave. However, it's also the way a Master gets the attention of their apprentices. Not that non-Vatis would know that. Fortunately Pratima doesn't seem to notice. Instead you call out to her. “Yes, you did it! Now try not to burn down the family estate!”

She winces. “Right, sorry.” She clears her throat, quickly changing the subject. “Anyway, you were right. I just needed to focus on my vys as I cast instead of just letting it do whatever. It was so simple! Really, Mik. Thank you. Maybe now I won't need to run away whenever I find a ruin that's still populated.”

You shake your head. “Don't grow prideful. You'll only get yourself killed. That being said, I'm glad you figured out what you were doing wrong. Do still work towards increasing the size of your reserves, because as it stands you've got two useless hunks of crystal implanted in your palms that don't actually help you do anything. You need to learn to control them, or get them removed.”

She nods her head and tries to look serious, but it doesn't last. A moment later she's back to dancing around like a child with a new toy. You sigh, and turn your attention to Duha. For her part, she seems occupied watching Pratima prance about excitedly. You draw her attention with a wave. “How do you feel? Do you think you understand how to replicate what you just did?”
(5/6)
>>
>>37114161
Its not there anymore.
>>
She cocks her head to the side and thinks about it for a moment, then nods. Just to be certain you draw the knife across your flesh one last time and allow her to heal it again. She manages it without trouble, the wound knitting closed evenly. Satisfied, you stand and stretch some of the stiffness from your limbs.

You decide to impart a few last words of wisdom to your sisters before you leave. “I need to get back to my companions, but I leave you with this. Regardless of what sort of magic you're casting, attempt to imitate the characteristics of that element when you cast. If you're shooting fire from your hands, you ought to be flighty, impulsive, gluttonous, and greedy. If you're healing a wound you ought to be lazy, relaxed, and follow the path of least resistance. If you're eroding someone's armor you need to be stalwart and pensive. So on and so forth.”

Truth be known, you're not actually sure what sort of characteristics Metal magic has. Stoicism, perhaps? You imagine it's similar to Earth magic. Regardless you pull each of your sisters into a tight hug and wish them the best before excusing yourself. On your way towards the front gate you make a detour, stopping in the dining room to leave your plate and say goodbye to your mother.

She seems slightly more awake when you find her, still reclined amongst a mass of pillows. She cracks open an eye when you set down your plate, speaking up. “I guess you're leaving us again.” Her tone is accusing, but she's smiling. You think she's teasing you but your mother has always been sort of a passive aggressive sort so it's difficult to tell whether she's actually admonishing you or simply teasing.

“I'm afraid so, but I'm not leaving town yet. I'll just be staying with my old Master for at least the next few days, or maybe even a few weeks. Plus, I'll be leaving a brooch you can use to contact me with Master Karim, should you ever wish to speak with me.”

(1/3)
>>
She sits up properly, nodding her head in approval. “I'm glad to see my son isn't quite so inconsiderate as I'd thought. Don't get yourself killed, or else I'll find you in the next life and scold you then. Don't think I won't. I expect you to tell that crazy old bastard to tell us you're still alive at least once a week while you're out wandering. I don't want to be left wringing my hands again, worrying that you'd gotten eaten or something.”

You sigh, bending over to give your mother a hug and a kiss on the cheek. She returns the gesture, squeezing you tightly before letting you pull away. “I will do my best, Mother. Promise.”

You're about to leave but before you can make your escape she speaks again. “And find yourself a good Samjan woman! I didn't raise a deviant, and you associate far too often with the lesser races. That Darzi one likes you, it wouldn't be hard to-”

You cut her off with a gesture. “I can assure you, Mother. I'm not going to turn into a deviant. I'll settle down eventually, I'm sure. Just not in the near future.”

Your mother holds out her arms, and you give her another hug, before you're finally allowed to make your departure. She seems slower in the mornings than you remember her being. She used to be the first one awake and the most active of any of your family. Perhaps age, or the fact she's had five kids, is starting to weigh on her. At least she still seems to have her health, and you doubt she's at any risk of passing on for at least another few centuries.

Instead of leaving through the main gate you opt to take the entrance in the dining room usually reserved for clients. You find yourself exiting into an alley between your family's estate and a neighboring one. You briefly greet the guard standing watch by the door and make your way towards the main streets. It's roughly noon, judging by the position of the sun, and the streets are busy. You stick to the sidewalks to avoid getting crushed under a wagon wheel or some such.

Rather than cutting through the market, you opt to head towards the docks. They ought to be slightly less busy at this hour than most of the more frequented streets. Not the mention the cool breeze coming off the water should prove refreshing. As you progress westwards, the stench of fish rotting in the sun, sweat, and salt water come to dominate the usually pervasive stench that comes with pressing hundreds of thousands of people into a relatively small area.

You find yourself navigating a complex maze of warehouses, brothels, piers, drydocks, shipyards, and fish mongers. It's difficult to keep track of what direction you're walking, you must admit you were never as familiar with the docks as you were the rest of the city, but you think you're managing well enough. However, eventually you enter a part of town you can't recall ever wandering through and find yourself lost. You can still see the Grand Library looming in the distance, and so long as you walk towards that great golden dome you'll eventually reach the Vatis district, but you keep getting stuck in dead ends or being forced to go around a long stretch of apartments.

Its the popular terminology established by d&d back in the seventies and proliferated by various fantasy novels, movies and games since
>>
Whilst wandering across a narrow pier where a number of smaller fishing vessels are coming to dock you find a massive building blocking your path. Its gate is shut with a simple padlock chain, and a sign glued to a board next to it proclaims the building for sale. The architecture and ornamentation is rich, and halfway up the tower a bridge connects it to a second structure set on an artificial island in the sea. Judging by the look of the place, you'd guess it was the headquarters of a merchant enclave, at some point in time.

Below the for sale sign, 'Inquire Inside' is written. You find that suspicious, considering the gate is barred. You suppose you should probably just turn around and look for an alternative path around, but you find yourself curious about this place.

While theres no real set definition however Drakes cannot use magic while Dragon's can they're also smaller and not as intelligent. Drake's more basic they hunt burn mate and are greedy but have no real higher cognitive thinking. Drake CAN be used for smaller dragons or dragon like creatures but like I said the exact definition is rather flipfloppy. The one thing that is agreed on is that Drakes are smaller, stupider, and can't use magic.

Materia is in the nominative/ablative/vocative singular while materiae is in the genitive/dative singular.

Materia would be use to express that a material is the subject of the sentence, or that some material is being addressed in the sentence. The uses of the ablative case are manifold and I won't go into them.

Materiae would be used to indicate that a material possesses something, or that something is done to or for a material. Dative has a lot of other uses, but I don't think many of them apply to materiae.

Materiae could also mean lumber or the origin/source of something.

You glance around, looking for anyone who might be watching you. So far as you can tell, nobody is paying you any mind. The fishermen go about their business, some hauling their catches off their craft while others cast off or come to dock. A few people pass to and from the walkways up to the city proper, but they don't even so much as glance towards you. However, some paranoid part of you tells you to keep looking, so you try to use nature magic to examine the situation from a different perspective.

Your vision fades out, and the world shifts. You feel wind stirring your limbs, the warmth of the sun against your face. Subtle vibrations shake your legs and knock loose droplets of moisture which had accumulated on your body. Then those sensations are gone, replaced by a cold void. A lack of all sensation. It's unsettling, like being crippled. Then you're floating about in some sort of delicious soup, your legs drinking in nutrients from the water beneath you.

You cut off the flow of magic, returning to your own perception of reality. That was... strange. You didn't imagine channeling your consciousness through plants would quite be like that. Maybe you'll learn to better understand the feedback you received from plants as you grow to be a more talented Nature vatis, or maybe you'll be able to actually channel your senses through plantlife.
>Vys Pool: (39/41)

Regardless, you learned little from the experience. In the end you decide not to try and be clever, instead opting to simply ask one of the fishermen coming to dock. You wave an arm in the air and call out to the nearest, an elderly man with a long white beard and an array of scars on his hands and forearms, they look like teeth marks so far as you can tell. “Excuse me! I was wondering if you knew anything about this building.”

The man pauses, a long string of hooked fish tied to a rope slung over his shoulder. A few of them flop about uselessly, while others simply gape and stare about as fish are wont to do. The old man spits out some vile black gunk and nods. “Yeah, I know it. Them uppity merchants from the islands used to call it their home in El-Amin, 'til that warlord put 'em to the sword. Got put to sale by the bank after the payments stopped. Haven't seen anyone go inside, haven't seen anyone leave. I'd avoid it.”

With that, the old man wanders off. Honestly, he's raised more questions than he's answered. If the bank is selling it, why advertise with a sign? Normally they'd inquire after specific clients who might wish to make a purchase. Why have the sign instruct visitors to inquire inside, if nobody has entered or left since the place was locked up? Seems a touch suspicious, all things considered. Sounds like an adventure.

You freeze the lock, then use an errant stone to smash it open. It's not hard, the metal seemed to have been at least partially rusted through. Once you've got the lock broken it's a simple task to pull the chain off the gate. You slip inside, taking a moment to tie the chain around the gate before turning your attention finally to the great double doors before you. They tower upwards, at least fifteen feet tall. Thick, sturdy wood. They remind you of a fortress' gates. You grab one of the handles and throw your shoulder into the door. It swings open easily enough, and you stumble into an ornate hall.

Despite apparently being abandoned, the entry hall seems to be in fairly good shape. The pool in the center is filled with algae and muck, but other than that and a thick layer of dust on everything there are no outward signs that the place is abandoned. Shut the door gently behind you and set off further into the building. There are three doors leading out of the room, all of them more or less identical. You pick the one to your left on a whim.

As you push open the door you find yourself in what appears to be a trashed ballroom of some sort. Smashed furniture lies scattered about, and many of the floor tiles are cracked or shattered. You poke about the place briefly, but don't find anything of particular note. Some smashed fine china, some silverware. Nothing worth taking. Disappointed, you pass into the next room.

Past the trashed dining room you find a sitting area of some sort. Cushions and couches are scattered about, along with hookah pipes and various decorative flora and statues. Silken curtains hang from the ceiling and thick, woven carpets cover the floors. You snap your fingers, and the candles in a chandelier sputter to life. The entire room is cast in a warm glow, allowing you to more easily snoop about.

You find a few interesting statues, most of them abstractions but a few copies of famous works, you might be able to sell to someone. The hookah pipes also might go for something. You also find an oud, but it's not nearly as fine as your own. You make a note to swing back here on your way out of the building before turning around and heading for the entry hall, deciding to explore a separate area of the old building. You've yet to encounter anyone whom you might ask about purchasing the place, even if you wanted to. It seems like a bit of a fixer upper if you're being honest.

You try the door opposite the first one you entered, to the right of the doorway. Through this door you find the kitchens, which seem to be fairing well. Screened windows allow sunlight to pour in, although you note some mold and rot as well. Presumably the moisture is hell on all these wooden surfaces. You find some rotten food, molded bread, and dead herbs. Nothing of particular value. You're surprised to find the place has running water though, that's a luxury reserved for the especially wealthy, and Vatis of course.

File: Enclave - Kitchens.jpg (483 KB, 1920x1123)

483 KB JPG
There are no other doors in the kitchen, so you return the entry hall. The last remaining doorway opens up into a wide dining hall. Two long tables adorned with moth-eaten table clothes stretch parallel to one another, before eventually butting against another long table which stretches perpendicular to both of them. Behind the perpendicular table are two long staircases which lead up to a balcony, and presumably a second story beyond. This used to be the style, a few decades ago. These days it's considered in vogue to eat reclined or in what most would consider a sitting area, dedicated dining rooms have faded from popularity.

You make your way around, but besides a rat's nest in one corner and a few scattered pottery shards you don't find much of note. You trek your way up the staircase, pausing to admire a few of the statues which lay in recessed alcoves at regular intervals along the stairs. If you had to guess, they were someone's ancestors. Perhaps past leaders. Most of them are stern looking older men with big, full beards. Once you reach the balcony at the top, you find another array of doors before you, six of them. However, you also note a slight depression in the wall, cracks evident surrounding it. An entrance to the slave's passages, you imagine.
