A one-shot or 2-4 threads quest.

The alarm from your phone sends you out of your comfortable dream and into the bitter reality that you've grown to despite. The room is dark except from the illuminating light coming from the TV and your phone. It feels like your head has been split in two. Oh right, you drank alone in your small apartment yesterday while listening to the sound of laughter and fireworks until you fell asleep. Another new years eve spent alone and miserable. Although this year you could buy alcohol and get drunk for once. You vividly remember when you went out to buy the two bottles of vodka a couple of days after christmas. You repeated what you were going to say and do at the store in great detail on your way there; Pick up a bottle or two of vodka, show passport (because you never bothered to get an actual ID), pay and then rush home. However, when the cashier had asked for identification, you panicked after you couldn't find the passport where you put it in your jacket.

Glancing to your side, you see the two empty vodka bottles lying on the floor. Even if it worked out, you'd rather just forget about the whole thing. Alas, it'll be just another depressing scene in the shitty slice-of-life movie where you're the antagonist getting his shit beaten to a pulp. Reaching out to your phone you notice the familiar window that marks an unread message. It's from your mother: "Hey Sweetie! You didn't answer me when I called to wish you a Happy New Year! Oh, and your dad wanted me to remind you--", and instead of scrolling down to read the rest, you throw the phone to the side. He probably just wanted to tell you to get your shit together so he doesn't have to pay for your apartment. You're still unsure as to how your mother persuaded him to do it.

Eventually you pull yourself up from the floor and stumble over towards the fridge, the thought of breakfast running through what is left of your head. However, you're left standing there and staring at the empty contents of your fridge; You forgot to buy food yesterday. A heavy sigh escapes past your lips. Like the man with no purpose that you are, you turn slowly towards the clock hanging above the TV. 7:15 AM and ticking. The store opened 15 minutes ago and there won't be much human interaction if you decide to go out this early in the day. If lady misfortune is with you though then you'll probably run into an early jogger or a student on their way to the train station or the local high school. Your eyes end up staring straight at the door down the narrow hall. Is it really worth going out right now, even if it is for the sake of food? Can you really take the chance and be bothered?

>Screw it, you can watch TV for an hour or two to prolong the inevitable and then go out to buy breakfast.
>There's no time like the present and you're really hungry. Might as well make the trip now rather than torturing yourself.

How about we stop being a bitch and lift weights?

Against your better judgement, you decide that making the trip now to get food is worth the anxiety of going outside. You drag yourself across the small apartment towards the door, putting on your shoes and jacket while doing so. However, you remain frozen in front of the door, your hand almost touching the knob. You can already feel the anxiety rising within you.

After a deep breath and with your eyes closed, you launch yourself out from your apartment and into the real world. A cold morning gale brushes against your skin and you hear something under your shoes; It's snow. The entire neighbourhood is covered in it. You've often found yourself indifferent to it, but the crunching sound when you walk on it makes you smile a bit.

You've decided that the closest store will have to do. After making your way down the stairs and past the apartment building and the playground near it, you're already halfway there. No one alive has been sighted yet, but your luck is about to run out. Turning the next corner, you almost bump into a small figure. It's a girl wearing a blue jacket, a red scarf and a pair of pink gloves along with a brown leather bag. An odd setup in your honest opinion. It's Johanna, a student of Saint Claire's High school, the local one in town.

Your eyes meet for a second when she backs away from bumping into you.

>"G-good morning, Johanna."
>Ignore her and keep walking.
>>
>>37107496
>"G-good morning, Johanna."
So can say something.
>>
>>37107371
Whoa there, let's not get too hasty.

>>37107496
>"G-good morning, Johanna."
>>
>>37107564
"G-good morn--", you start, but as soon as she has regained balance from almost jumping backwards, she throws you a dirty look before she hurries past you. Ignored again. You'd think you would learn from the first couple of attempts in the past. At least you didn't have to deal with talking to her if she decided to respond for once. 'Good morning' was all you had.

Shrugging off the rejection, you continue down the snow-covered street until you reach the crossing. A car drives past you and steers into the right road leading towards the train station, past the park. You, however, have business in the nearby store so you turn left and continue into a small neighbourhood with houses still decorated from christmas.

From a distance you can see a figure jogging towards you. Joggers aren't the most social people since they're in motion, but you recognize this particular one and you cringe at the thought of what's about to happen. It's Bjorn, a 60 years old swedish man that moved here a couple of years ago. His english isn't the best, but that's not the problem. He's too social for his age. Upon reaching you, he raises his hand at you and starts jogging lightly in one place in front of you.

"Hej there, sports! What is you doing so early?", he asks, his smile ever present upon his old features. Although you have to admit that he looks young for his age. Johanna was one thing, but you're not sure if you can handle talking with Bjorn right now. The anxiety is steadily building up.

>Ignore him.
>Nod politely at him and keep walking.
>"I'm, uh, going t-to the s-store."

>>37107793

"I'm, uh, going t-to the s-store.", you respond to his inquiry. His smile doesn't waver, not even in the face of a cold wind blowing past you both. He isn't wearing anything but a thin jogging suit and a pair of jogging shoes. "Oh, really? That sounding grate, mate! What is your buying?"

"Like, um, milk? Eggs and b-bacon too? I'm, eh, n-not sure.", you press out with much effort. It feels like countless people are standing all around you, staring at you with mocking eyes. Bjorn seems to pick up on your uncomfortable state as well for once.

"I will be seeing you!", and with that, Bjorn jogs off. You breath out for a moment as if you've been holding your breath. That took a lot of energy. Your stomach growls at you and you're reminded why you left your safehouse in the first place. You cover the last bit without any more unfortunate encounters. Warm air hits you all over when you enter the store followed by a cling. "Welcome, customer!", the cashier who you've never bothered to learn the name of calls out. You nod at her and continue in amidst the rows to pick up milk, eggs and bacon. Might as well buy what you told Bjorn. It is a good and healthy breakfast. You might have forsaken school and job, but at least you try to keep your health up somewhat.

As you pick up the pack of bacon, you notice something happening on the opposite row; A man has accidently walked into a girl who were browsing some goods. She's sitting on the floor with her things strewn across the floor. The man who's wearing a suit takes a quick look at his wrist clock before he mutters "Sorry" and walks off. The girl remains on the floor and she has started to gather her things.

>Help her.
>Pay for your stuff and go home.

You decide that you'd better help her otherwise you're probably going to beat yourself over it all week. You leave the plastic bag with the milk, eggs and bacon in it where you stood and walk around the corner. She notice you as you kneel down close to her and starts to gather her stuff to put them back in her plastic bag. You try to not look at her, but you notice that she's not moving and hasn't been since you started to help her. You throw a glance towards her and she catches your attention immediately; She's staring into your eyes with her blue, innocent eyes. It looks like she's been crying recently, but there's no sign of any tears now. She's just looking at you with uncertainty. Is she questioning why you're helping her? Then she's not the only one. After a fierce struggle, you find the strength to look away and continue to help her pick her stuff up. Only, she continues to stare at you and when you're done, you start to rise up to walk off. She grabs your hand and gets up with the help of it. She doesn't let go though. You're starting to freak out and your anxiety is building up fast. You can feel your calm facad breaking.

"My name's Eve. What's your name?", she finally speaks with her smiling eyes and a cute little smile of her own. Her short hazel brown hair hangs down and covers her right eye, but she occassionally brushes it off to the side. She's wearing a red jacket, blue jeans, a pair of brown shoes and black fingerless gloves along with a green handmade hat. She looks ordinary, but a bit too colourful for you nonetheless. What did she ask? Your name? It's not something you're very proud of, but you've never met this girl before so this might be a chance to make a good first impression for once.

"It's, uh, P-paige.", and right after telling her your real name you feel your mind breaking apart piece by piece; Why did you open your mouth? Why did you help her? Why did you even leave your god forsaken home this morning to begin with?! You look annoyingly over at the plastic bag with your food in it. Eve squeezes your hand harder. You haven't noticed that she hasn't let go of your hand yet, but now you're well aware of it. Your eyes meet hers. "That's a really nice name.", she whispers. Why would she whisper? You're seeing red flags raised from this girl, but she refuses to let go of your hand. You're on the verge of panicking and once you do, no one will stop you from doing something really stupid. However, she suddenly lets go of your hand and picks up her bag, her gaze averted from your eyes for the first time. She whispers something that you don't quite catch and without thinking before you act, you speak up.

"What?", and she realises that you didn't hear her. She seems to be struggling against an inner turmoil while she looks up at you and then down at the bag in her hands. "Thank you.", she says, looking straight at you again. Her cheeks are red and she's blushing hard. Why is she blushing? Was it something you said or something you did? Maybe she's just embarressed to be around you and is trying to get away? Sounds about right. You're about to excuse yourself when she darts over to your plastic bag and picks it up.

"Come. I have something to show you.", and with that she's off. It takes a couple of seconds to register what just happened. Did she tell you to come with her? And more importantly, she took your bag! When you reach the cashier, Eve is nowhere to be seen. You take out your wallet to pay for your things out of reflex, but the girl shakes her head at you. "Your girlfriend paid for you.", she reports with a smirk. You, however, is not in a mood for jokes. After walking out from the store, you look about to find her, but she's gone. Where did she go? She wanted to show you something, but rushed off with your stuff instead? Or well, she paid for it so it is technically her stuff now.

You've grown used to rejections before, but this is something else entirely. You have been robbed! While she didn't really take anything from you besides the food you were going to buy, it still feels weird to be in this situation. Whether or not she wanted to show you something is unimportant right now. You sigh, defeated, and shamefully walk back into the store to pick up the things you need. After an embarressing moment of silence between you and cashier as you paid for the food, you find yourself almost jogging home. You round the street corner and get into the crossing. Out of curiousity you look around for her on your way home. You don't spot her in the neighbourhood in front of you.

However, when you look back down the street at the end of the neighbourhood, you see the familiar red jacket and green hat from the distance. She went to the park! You consider just going home and forgetting all about her, but then again, she did buy a bag with milk, eggs and bacon that you could get your hands on, for free too probably. After bargaining a deal with the devil, you turn about and start to trudge your way down the icy street you just climbed. She better explain herself real good once you get to the park.

"Hi! I thought you abandoned me there for a while.", she greets you with a waving hand where she sits at the swings, "did you forget something in the store?", she asks with a nod towards your bag. Despite your inability to do so, you feel like you want to scold her but you were never good at that, not even when you didn't suffer from social anxiety. You decide to just shake your head at her instead with an irritated look on your face. She, however, doesn't seem to notice it. "I haven't been to this park for years.", she explains while staring down at the snow mixed with sand. "Could you push me?", and her demeanor returns from a sad girl to how she was when you first met her. A sigh escapes you before you drop your bag slowly and position yourself behind her.

With each push she starts to soar higher and higher on her swing. After your last push, you step aside and that's when you hear her laugh a most beautiful and melodic laughter. A carefree one that you'd usually only find in a child, but the girl swinging before you is but 2-3 years younger than you. She leaps off the swings and picks up both her own and your bags. "Want to come with me to the train station?", she asks, "I'm off to meet my Dad. I haven't seen him in 4 years.", she explains with a somewhat sad look in her eyes again.

Without thinking before making a decision as is the norm for you these days, you nod and Eve lights up with a beaming smile. She hands you the other plastic bag with the things you were supposed to buy before, but she paid and took them instead. While holding onto both of your bags and watching Eve walk two meters ahead, you notice that she's occassionally looking back at you when you're scanning the area for any nearby people that might spot you. Her carefree smile never leaves her features though. It feels awefully weird to see someone as happy as this person. It makes you wonder where she's going, will she ever come back or is her father coming to visit her here? You doubt she lives around here because even though you haven't left your apartment much over the past 2 years, you can recognize more than half of the people in this small town and this girl is sticking out from the usual crowd.

"S-so, um," you try to catch her attention and you're somewhat successful as she turns around, walking backwards while facing you, "why are y-you going t-to see your dad again?", the effort you put into talking is immensive and you're still not used to being in the company of someone, least of all a girl. She continues to walk backwards, but while her feet carries her in the right direction, her mind seems to be somewhere else entirely.

"I have, well, I have had some problems at home and I just want to stay with him instead now.", her explaination is sincere and doesn't seem to be hiding anything. For all you know maybe she took her time to answer because she didn't know how to initially explain herself? Eventually you both reach the train station; It's quite small and not note-worthy of anything. There's two tracks running through the edge of the town, one for trains heading towards the westcoast and the other for those bound to the capital several miles from here. This town serves more as a pit-stop in-between them. You'd figure it would be filled with more people then, but if truth should be told, most trains pass right by it. Some times the train stops here, but rarely does anyone leave the train.

You look up at the clock erected on a pole close to the tracks. It's 14:15 PM already. You've been outside for several hours now. A new record, but is it thanks to Eve or have something changed? You look at her for a couple of seconds while she's just standing there, looking for the next train. She's beautiful and cute, no doubt about it, but she's very different from the usual girls you've associated yourself with before locking yourself up in your apartment. It's like all the things you consider to be old and dull is new and exciting for her. She looks back at you and your eyes meet. You can hear an incoming train in the distance.

>Ask for her number.

You feel like you're going to regret this, but here it goes.

"A-are you coming back here any t-time s-soon?", you ask her in almost a whisper, but load enough for her to hear you. The train is rolling closer towards the station and it's apparent that it's not going to stop here. Why are we standing here if her train won't be coming for another hour or so? She turns to you, looking you straight in your eyes. She has dropped her bag at her feet and her hands are holding yours. This moment feels really intimate, but you don't know this girl and you haven't had contact with the female gender in, well forever. You stare back at her, dumbfounded and wide-eyed. Her smile slowly fades and tears start to swell from her innocent eyes. You're starting to freak out somewhat over the situation you find yourself in. Is she going to cry? Why? Did you say something stupid? No, it was just a common question regarding time and date. The train is close to the station now.

"No.", she finally utters and smiles a little bit when she let's go of your hands, "but I hope I'll see you some day again, Paige." and with that she turns around and sprints towards the end of the edge. You're standing there, watching it all unfold, too stunned to do anything. She leaps in front of the speeding train and like a doll, her body flies off to the left and ends up underneath the train as it passes over her. The train itself starts to slow down quickly. You're empty inside. The usual voice that gives you comfort and tells you what to do is gone. Your eyes grow wide and your mouth opens up and from it you hear an inhumane scream erupting as every muscle in your body grows hard. You're paralyzed where you stand and the scream only continues to roll on.

It could only have been a nightmare, but all those hours you spent walking outside with the girl named Eve felt too real to not be true. You start to rummage through your apartment, looking both high and low for the food you and Eve bought yesterday. Where did you put it? Where would you put it if not in the fridge? Did you eat a large breakfast and then fell asleep and dreamt up a fictional girl named Eve? While you frantically search behind your bed and desk, you notice your phone lying close to the fridge. The message was unread, but you're absolutely sure you read it in your dream. You decide that if the first part of the message is exactly how you remember it then something crazy is going on. You move slowly, but surely, towards the phone on the floor. After picking it up and sliding the lock off of the touchscreen, you click onto the message from your mother.

"Hey Sweetie! You didn't answer me when I called to wish you a Happy New year! Oh, and your dad wanted me to remind you--", you read the message once, twice and then a last time out loud before the phone falls from your hand, crashing onto the floor. What's happening?! Is this just some sick dream or is this reality?! Are you reliving yesterday?! Did you have a dream of what's going to happen?! All these stupid ideas rush through your head, but who can blame you? You're obviously freaking out. What should you do?

No. You're not going uncover the answers from calming down and collecting your thoughts. You need to act now! Within a couple of seconds you're fully dressed again, but upon reaching towards the knob of your front door, you freeze up; Are you about to do something stupid? Are you making a huge deal out of a nightmare? What if the message in your dream was something you'd imagine your mom would send you considering it was new years eve yesterday? Doubt washes over you and you start to take a couple of steps away from the door. Maybe it's for the best if it was all a dream, right? Considering what happened to Eve, maybe it's better if you could believe that it was just a nightmare and she's out there somewhere with her dad right now. You smile at the thought, but then you remember her lifeless body flying through the air, the tears in her eyes before she leapt off in front of the train, and her laughter in the park. No, that wasn't a dream. It can't have been a dream or a nightmare. It was real. It felt real.

The cold wind slaps you right across the face after you close the door behind you. Where did you meet her? At the store? Then that's your destination. The stairs down from the second house floor is nothing and before you know it, you're already well on your way towards the store. You vividly remember whatever it was that you saw; A vision or something. Around this next corner you will almost stumble into Johanna. Instead of walking straight on, you take a pause and wait. You were right, because only a couple of seconds later Johanna emerges from the street corner and keeps on walking towards the eastern edge of the town where the High school is located. She doesn't notice you at all, and for once, you don't pay any attention to that at all.

After just a couple of minutes of fast paced walking, you reach the neighbourhood and in the distance you can see the familiar figure jogging down the road. It's Bjorn. Normally you'd stop and politely nod at him, maybe answer any of his questions if you're felling brave or foolish, but not today; He shouts out to you, but you only give him a polite nod and walk past him. He obviously takes it in a stride as he shouts back at you "Have fun, boy!" before he jogs off. You wonder if you'll ever get to see Bjorn mad, or if you even want to see such a thing.

The store comes into your view and like never before, you push your way in. The cashier is a bit taken back at first by your sudden appearance, but calms down and welcomes you. Ignoring her entirely, you make your way down the third aisle, checking the second one right next to it the entire time. You see the same scene from your vision or dream unfold; A girl and a man bump into each other, the man mutters "I'm sorry" and moves on while the girl remains on the floor. Your anxiety is starting to catch up to you at last when you finally reach the girl on the floor. You start to pick up the scattered items. She looks up at you and your eyes meet once more.

It's Eve.
