You gently disengage yourself from the delicate miko's hug, and look into her golden eyes. They're steaming slightly, but only slightly. Any tears she's shed, she's done with. “I have to go see her, Kiku-chan, but we're about to have guests. Please stay with your sister for the moment.” You stand up and Kiki-hime's eyes are bright with the tears she can shed, and you have the strong suspicion that they're not solely reserved for Er Yin-sensei. “Kiki-hime, we're about to entertain a representative of a clan of nogitsune youkai-born and her....well, her little friend, who seems to be pretty young. Could you prepare a few things for them?”

Kiki-hime walks up to you and hugs you gently. You hug her as best you can without the use of your hands. The pain is yours to control, but that won't last long. “Of course, ryu-chan. And....I'm glad you came home to us.” You feel your heart lighten a little more. This is not insurmountable. It's fucked up all to heaven, but you can cope.

“Akari-niji-chan, guard duty. If Yui shows up before I'm done, send her in to me, and I'll have Yuuhi-chan or Shoko-chan come help.” She nods just slightly.

“Kiki-hime, please come help me change,” Akari asks politely, which seems to confuse Kiki-hime momentarily though she follows, while Kiku-chan mutters into her sleeve.

“Baka-dragon.”

You reach over and stroke Kiku-chan's horns slowly, and she shudders, her white sleeve dropping away from her lips as she closes her eyes. “Be good to your sister, Kiku-chan. She's worried too.” You slide your fingers back up to the tip of her horn and she shudders violently.

“H-hai, aniki.” Her golden eyes flutter open and she looks at you, her hair wafting slightly rather than exploding the way it often does when you tease her. You smile and continue to stroke her horn slowly. “We can make this right. I alrready have been makign plans.” the flicker of hope in her eyes is reassuring to you and you nudge her with your tail, placing your hand behind your back. There's no chance she didn't see, but she doesn't need to know how painful that was for you.

“Go worry about your sister's safety, Matagama Kiku. Let me worry about your master.” She bows deeply, and claps her hands twice, as though she were excusing herself from a temple or leaving a shrine. Though, technically she did pray to you a moment ago, so that might explain it. As she turns to leave you run the fin of your tail down her back and she makes a startled 'eeeek!' noise and her hair explodes into flaming activity as you quickly slip away, grinning to yourself.

“Stupid aniki-dragon!” she shouts as you slip into the hallway to the sound of her ineffectually stomping down the other hallway.

After reassuring Kiku-chan, you take a deep breath and walk to the room Kiku-chan and Er-Yin sensei shared. While your sister did not mind sharing with Yuuhi-chan and Shoko-san, since she was a guest as well, you thought it would be....imprudent to have the other couple have to deal with guests. Especially considering Kiku-chan's temper.

You open the door with your tail, and step inside the room, steeling yourself for the experience. You've seen injuries and dealt out death. This is more personal, but you always take these things personally. It's something that other Water dragonettes seem to be able to take in stride, or ignore. It always feels personal to you, these injuries and pains that happen when you're around. Of course, this time it really was personal in so many ways.

Your sister is sitting in a chair next to Er Yin-sensei's bed, and as promised, there is a seal on her forehead, the glistening blue symbols and silver paper unmistakably your sister's. At the very least, Er Yin isn't in pain at the moment. Jinyuu-onee-sama is sitting in the high backed chair, eyes closed, but she is a Water dragonette, and is perfectly aware of everything going on. Her seal will keep Er yin unconscious for as long as you need, but you're not quite ready to see your cousin's handiwork.

Shoko-san is leaning against the wall, with half a dozen huge jars of plum wine stacked alongside the wall, one in her lap, and two empty ones rolled off to the side. She's still pretty torn up, but she's been bandaged. Yui-niji-chan said sake would heal her, and you've used it yourself on occasion, so you have no reason to doubt your cloud-rider. Lifting the jar in her lap one handed, Shoko pours a generous amount of the sweet wine into her mouth, across her face, and over herself, maybe drinking half of what she pours.

Water spirit children are like that: when cleaning is easy, drinking becomes a job unto itself. You would know!

Yuuhi-chan is kneeling next to the bed, her tail flicking back and forth in rapid waves, her great big sword lying on her right. Despite it's position, meant to reassure people, you have no doubt she's perfectly capable of taking the fight to anyone who tries something stupid. The worry in her eyes is telling though.

Er Yin....it's bad. You know how bad it was, because Yui-niji-chan told you, but it's still bad. Her left hand and forearm are mostly intact. But halfway up her arm the burn begins. Singular, because it really isn't a series of burns, or burns in sections. It is very clearly a single burn, which seems to have been centered on her bicep and radiated outwards. Her flesh isn't burned to the bone there, it has simply been burned away, and the remaining flesh is about half of her arm's thickness. You can clearly see her elbow joints, as well as parts of her upper ribs and her shoulder joint. The flesh is blackened, but the splits were you can see red, raw flesh are common at the last few inches around the edges of the burned away areas. Er Yin's chest muscles are exposed, but you can't see past her ribs, or into her chest cavity, thank the kamuy.

Due to your sister's power, she's barely breathing, and may as well be comatose. There are also numerous bandages elsewhere, less serious wounds, and a number of acupuncture needles in her side and along her ribs. Er Yin is bare down to her waist, but that seems meaningless compared to the horror of her injury.

Ignoring the agonizing pain it causes you, you take Er Yin's good right hand, and lift it to your lips. You kiss her hand softly, and while it may be your imagination she seems to relax ever so slightly. A silent promise whispered to the void seems to soothe her further and you place her hand upon the sheets.

Your sister notices the condition of your hands immediately of course, but when she sees the condition of your hands she doesn't try to stop you, only looks terribly worried and a little sad. “Aka-chan....”

You shake your head. “Do you have any skills or knowledge that can help with this, Jinyuu-onee-sama? Yui told me what she can manage, but I need to know if there is anything, anything at all you can do or tell me that can help.”

Jinyuu-onee-sama closes her eyes, hiding her worry for you away as you asked. “No, aka-chan, I haven't any ideas that could help. I am afraid this is beyond any skills save those of Hinata-hakase.” Her regret is honest enough, but you have the feeling she's not telling you the entire truth.

Yuuhi looks up and clutches her skirt in both hands. “Yes, ma'am. These are a little like Ghost Flame, but more real than Ghost Flame injuries. Like Ghost Flame made physical, a combination of the two. Even trying it would be the work of an insane person! It's dangerous and stupid, and clearly a bad thing!”

“Yuuhi, that's her cousin you're talking about,” Shoko reminds her friend calmly.

Yuuhi leaps to her feet and starts pacing back and forth rapidly. “I know! Isn't that insane and stupid and dangerous! I mean, he could have hurt someone! He DID hurt someone! Now I have to kill him and chop his head off and present it to the Emperor or something!” She paces several more times then takes a huge breath and lets it all out before falling to her knees and kowtowing to you. “Please forgive this miserable excuse for a youkai her failure, mistress! Please allow me to commit seppuku after chopping your cousin into pieces!”

“Butbutbutbut-” Yuuhi-chan motorboat impression isn't really all that good.

Holding up one hand you cut off her exclamation. “No. I already decided, and he's going to pay for his crimes the hard way, by living with them.” That and you utterly wrecked his sense of self and turns his ego into ash. You run the tip of your tail between her ears, the sides of your tail-fin sliding along both of them slowly. “Down girl! I need you for other things! You're a precious person and you're not allowed to sacrifice yourself for anyone, remember!”

Jinyuu-onee-sama hides her smile behind a fan and you glance at the nogitsune-born warrior. Her eyes are rolled back and looking at the ceiling – sort of – and her tail is limp, spread out behind her like a silky mop. “Ohhhhkkkkaaaaaaayyyyy,” she sighs as you stroke her ears and head. Her hands are lip at her sides and she leans into your tail, nearly unconscious herself!

She's even more sensitive than Kiku-chan. Her left foot is bouncing in place as you pet her, even though she's sitting seiza.

You give her one final stroke and she stares into space dreamily. “Besides, I'm about to make your lives difficult – I need you and Shoko-san to take up guard duty. We have prisoners whom I need alive and unharmed, and visitors from a local nogitsune-born clan seeking our help.” You blink at the blissed out nogitsune-child. “....Yuuhi-chan?”

“She's going to be like that for a few minutes, Ryukusa-sama, sorry. She's got a thing about her ears.” Shoko sounds drunk, which means she's probably on her fifth 8-gallon jar of wine. “I need a few minutes, but I'll be sober in no time.”

You look at your hands. “You have one minute.”

Shoko grunts and sets the jar of wine down, placing her hands on her knees and leaning over, growling softly to herself. Jinyuu-onee-sama looks down at you, worried still.

There is a soft knock at the door, and Akari and Yuuhi step inside. “Reiha-sama and Peta-sama are here, aniki,” Akari says softly.

Shoko-san rises, and you can see she's not just sober, but she seems almost fully healed. It's not like your ability to ignore injuries either, she's actually ready for another fight. “I'll go assist Kiku-sensei, Ryukusa-sama.” She bows to you and steps out, closing the door behind her.

Akari sits down next to Yuuhi and leans over, looking into the blissed out youkai-born girl's face curiously . Yui-chan walks over to the bed and touches the acupuncture needles carefully. “Let me take a closer look, aniki, but I am going to stand by my original assessment....” Even now her soft, gentle voice is apologetic.

The jewel doesn't grant wishes like a genie. It gives the person who uses it enlightenment or activates their god-head/mikoto/ture soul. It will probably make Yui a better healer because she's already a good healer but there might be side effects we don't know about.

You glance sidelong at the drowsing nogitsune-child, and then turn your attention to Yui-chan, whose Void Eyes are wide open and seeing things you probably can only imagine. She traces the meridians of Er Yin's body, and frowns, all her concentration on the task before her.

Not wishing to interrupt or lay your own cards on the table just yet, you elicit answers from the one person who will always be honest with you and never second guess herself. “Akari-niji-chan, what do you think of the – no, Jinyuu-onee-sama, please stay.” She had started to rise, as she couldn't be of help, but her shock at your interruption and request for her to stay puts her off balance. “There is something I need to consult you about, and I need you here.” Her eyes narrow, glittering violet, and you look at her with deep sapphire dragon's eyes. “Please.”

She knows it isn't a request, but she remains, fanning herself slowly.

“I think that she has not yet made a decision about us, aniki,” Akari-niji-chan replies to your unasked question. “She's very cute, but I think that she is still testing us to see if we will turn upon them the way others have in the past.”

You look at your best friend. “Cute? I didn't know you went for the girls with big booms, Akari-niji-chan. Well, except for me.” You gently poke Yuuhi, who looks at you dreamily and grins. She has an awful lot of really sharp teeth for someone as cute as she is.

Akari-niji-chan is very calmly not noticing your sister, while Yui-niji-chan sighs, apparently finished with her examination. “Well, that explains why she was so intent on playing with Yui-niji-chan.”

“Huh?” is Yui's brilliant reply.

Yuuhi shakes her head and blinks several time and then yawns, swaying sleepily. You lightly poke her and she smiles her eyes brightening. “Well, she was playing with you to keep me from realizing who was in charge. It worked, too, much as I hate to say it. But now that we know, we can deal with it. Still....what did you think of their situation and them, Akari-niji-chan?”

Akari shrugs mildly. “They're the eta of the spirit-children, aniki. The best way to see how someone is going to treat you is to put one of the seemingly weakest of them in danger's way.” She's right of course, and Peta is probably one of the kind of youkai who can hide from the power of Water eyes, the way Hinata-hakase can. “It took me a few minutes to figure it out, but those little hand gestures she uses are a method of communicating to Reiha what she wants.”

“Bunraku puppets. I thought her gestures looked familiar!” They didn't, not then, but you weren't looking for them either. In other people's cases hindsight is 20-20, but in your case it's absolutely perfect.

You go to snap your fingers and Yui grabs your wrist. “ANIKI! Why didn't you tell me sooner!” She's staring at your injured hands, the remnants of the gloves seared into your flesh and the gem-like talons and inner core of your fingers exposed.

“Kind of busy, Yui-niji-chan. So, how bad is she.” Yui grumbles softly as Akari picks up her medical supplies and brings them over to where you are.

As you ignore the displeasure your sister is radiating, Yuuhi-chan watches with interest as Yui-niji-chan carefully starts plucking dead skin and flesh from your injured hands. You feel no pain, both because of your control and because Yui knows what she's doing. “It's just like I told you, aniki....she's going to have bad scars, and it's going to take months for her to heal at all. She'll never have full use of that arm. I just....” The oni-chick pauses and takes a deep breath. “I just can't do anything for her. I'm not a kappa, aniki.”

Akari and you look at each other and your elder sister stiffens, anger giving way to fear. Even Yuuhi looks disturbed by your expression.

“No, Yui-niji-chan, no you aren't,” you agree softly.

Akari looks at you seriously. “That's a very dangerous idea, aniki.”

Yui looks up, confused, and then sees your expression. “Oh, no way, aniki! Akari-chan is right, that's really dangerous!”

Once it's out, it's obvious that your sister did not want you thinking of dealing with a kappa to gain healing for your injured seer. While they're youkai, and not kami, they're intelligent, like nekomata, and like nekomata are about as predictable as racing beetles. The three things that are true of them is that they have the same skills as any water dragonette does where the martial arts and awareness of their surroundings are concerned, they are capable of teaching healing techniques on a par with the kami and kamuy of healing....and they can be murderous. It's that last part that your family is objecting to.

Except, notably, Akari.

“Look, the only kami and kamuy we can reach easily without Er Yin-sensei's help are the tengu, who are warriors and zealots; and the oni, who aren't especially gifted as healers, aside from the most important one of all.”

“Who is that, aniki?” Yui looks at you confused, and Akari's melodious giggle fills the air.

If it wouldn't cause you agonizing pain you would face-palm so freakin' hard right now.

Yuuhi leans over to Yui. “I think she means you, Yui-sama.”

Yui blinks. “Oh, right. Never mind!” She goes back to gently bandaging your hands with gauze dipped in some red-yellow fluid.

You sigh. “But you're all forgetting one other thing. We don't have ANY safe options. I already owe Hinata-hakase for sending my cousin to her as well as for dumping Kushinada on her. There's the Wish-Granting-Jewel, which might turn Yui into an expert healer or just make her vanish, if it works at all – NO, Yui, absolutely not!”

You continue before anyone can interrupt further. “And finally, any other kami or kamuy are out of our reach without Er Yin-sensei to help. Kiku-chan is my miko, not anyone else's. Even if she convinced Hinata-hakase to help out of the goodness of her heart, assuming she even has one, Kiku-chan would still be in deep debt to Hinata-hakase....and you all know how Kiki-hime will react to that. Except you, Yuuhi-chan, sorry.” Yuuhi-chan shrugs mildly, perfectly at ease with not knowing things. “And face it, a kappa can heal her completely, if it chooses to do so.”

“Aka-chan....” your sister begins....

Despite her dislike of you pursuing the nogitsune spirit-children as allies, the possibility of you taking on a kappa has seriously frightened her. Which is understandable; they take the most powerful aspects of a Stone dragonette, a Water dragonette and a Wood dragonette and combine them into one alien mindset that can be psychotic or compassionate, depending on their extremely changeable mood. Since the only way to render one powerless is to best it in hand to hand combat or a battle of wits, they're one of the few youkai that even sorcerers avoid like the plague.

You rein in your immediate response. She may be troubled by the nogitsune, but then again, most spirit children are troubled by the youkai-born. Their very birthright is alien. “Yes, onee-sama?” You turn your attention to her, letting her know you'll listen with an open mind, and open heart, despite her own troubles. Which you are partly responsible for, true, but you have a handful of really bad tiles to work with and try and win the entire game from.

She flushes faintly, though it's hard to tell if it's shame from her previous anger or from putting forth her opinion at this point. “If you are speaking of the Mill Pond Demon, you absolutely must not face it alone.”

You shake your head. “It is a kappa, it will only face me alone. I could take someone with me, but they still couldn't help me. It's not even a matter of honor, it's just the way they are.” Kami-stuff. Kami stuff always screws you.

Yuuhi raises her hand and you blink at her. “I have to go, I promised.”

That catches everyone's interest.

“Nogitsune children are the eta of the spirit children because they're not as pretty or as nice as kitsune children. But we're just spirit children, just like the rest of you are. We're even more sane than most of the others, because nogitsune are intelligent. We just happen to be youkai instead of kami, and people assume that means we're evil, just like people assume oni are stupid and dragons are a....um, stuck up.” Akari smiles faintly and Yui is listening intently. “All you really need to do is think of us as nekomata-children, and treat us the same way.”

[] “But you aren't. You're nogitsune children. And I wouldn't want you to be anything different.”
[] “That's a strange way to think of it, but all right.”
[] “I don't see it like that, Yuuhi-chan. You're all just individuals to me.”
[] “Trust me, Yuuhi, I will treat them just like I treat you.”

It's not what you are, but who you are. Thinking otherwise is an insult to those you are pretending are something else. If You must wear a mask for someone to trust you, will they really trust you?
We meet them with an open mind and see them as the individuals they are, not pretending they are something else.

Who they are is a facet of what they are.
Treating them as nekomata means treating them as spirit-children who are capricious and have an alien mindset, instead of automatically assuming ill-intent because of their youkai nature.

Individuality is not more important than understanding the realities of their nature and what it means.

Akari is grinning like an idiot, and Yui just rolls her eyes and gives a huge sigh. Yuuhi blinks, confused by their reactions.

You look the strange nogitsune-girl in the eyes and speak very softly. “But you're not nekomata children. You're not oni-children, dragonettes, or demigods. You're nogitsune children, and you are each one different.” Yuuhi looks like she's having difficulty coping with that idea.

Yui-niji-chan shakes her head. “Ryukusa-kun isn't like that. She doesn't care about anything except how you treat us.”

Yuuhi looks confused. “Treats you?”

Akari lays a hand on Yui's shoulder. “Her family. So long as you are no threat to her family, she will treat you as fairly as you deserve, no matter who or what you are.”

Yuuhi fidgets a little. “I don't understand....”

You stand up, looking at your bandaged hands. “You will. Akari, help me get dressed. We have diplomacy to manage, and really, I look like hell.”

Akari touches your sleeve and her fingertips come away crimson. “And you're bleeding again.”

“ANIKI!” Her half panicked exclamation would probably have woken the dead, and your elder sister is once more looking worried.

“....Gomennasai, Yui-niji-chan.” You resign yourself to more stitches....but really, is that such a bad price to pay for protecting your family? You never thought so.

And you suspect Er Yin didn't think so either.
