Ugh. Baron thinks he screwed up or something, but really, this is mostly your fault for being dumb. Just because everybody else gets to be like, all dancey and cuddley, doesn’t mean you can be something you’re not. You’ve always got to deal with you, and the you you have to deal with isn’t the you other people have to deal with. (+3 Stress: 61/100)

You make a frustrated sound and clear the hair from your eyes. “Hey. I wanted to dance, right? Don’t get all mopey on me,” you tell Baron, annoyed with everything. “You seriously didn’t even do anything. It was my fault.”

You can feel your words paining him further, but outwardly, he just smiles and shakes his head. “Sierra. You don’t have to appease me,” he says. “I mean, this is just a high school dance. I want you to have fun. If you feel like you’re being caged or something, I don’t know, nobody cares if you just go do you own thing. You don’t have to hang around me all night.”

He’s still not getting it. “No, it’s not like, like that, okay?” you say, starting to get more than a little mad. (+1 Stress: 62/100)

Baron is unconvinced. “Don’t worry about it. We’re friends, you don’t have to justify yourself to me,” he says.
>>
>>37068371

He looks like he’s about to make up some excuse to leave and give you time to yourself, but you cut him off before that can happen.

“Baron. Shut up,” you order.

The command startles him into silence.

You scowl, irritated with yourself for getting into a position where you have to try to explain things. You take a deep breath before beginning. “Listen. I have some personal stuff I’m working through right now, okay? I just… I don’t really handle touchy feely stuff very well. It’s kind of hard for me to do stuff, you know?”

Baron does not look like he knows, but you find that now you’re talking, you can’t stop. “I don’t know,” you continue. “Everybody was dancing and, you know, it was just you, so I guess I wanted to give it a shot too, even though I kind of knew maybe it wouldn’t work out.”

He takes a second to translate what you just said to a coherent thought. “You have a thing about people touching you?” he asks.

You don’t say anything.

“I didn’t… well.” He tries to think of something to say. “Is this like the scissors thing? No, wait, dumb question. Don’t answer that. “I think I get it.” He grimaces, probably at the fact he asked you to dance.

“Yeah. Well it’s whatever. I shouldn’t have dragged you into it,” you reply. “Anyway, awkward crap aside, you said you had something to say – did you actually say the thing?”
>>
>>37068381

He smiles, then laughs, then looks distinctly uncomfortable. “I didn’t realize the context would turn this way,” he says. “I’ll tell you later. Are you ready to get back to the dance?

You sense he’s hiding something, and you don’t like it, especially after he forced you into talking about weird subjects. “No. You don’t just drop something like that and walk away from it,” you state. “Just say it.” You leave no room for wriggling out of this one.

Baron gives you and your serious expression a careful look, and then chuckles to himself. “Fine, have it your way. Just give me a second, this is kind of a big deal.” He rubs his hands for a second, before realizing what he’s doing. He shifts position by putting one arm over the back of the couch. “Not that it’s the biggest deal, but I did say I’d tell you if you said yes to going to the dance, and you did, so you’ve fulfilled your end of the bargain.”

You feel like you’re missing something. “What?”

“Well Sierra,” he says, his expression guarded, “you probably already know this, but… I like you. I mean, you’re cool, you’re funny, you’re cute, and I like being around you. So yeah. But I guess what I really want to know is if you....”
>>
>>37068407

He looks away from you toward an old map hung on the wall across the hall, and turns a shade of red. “Since I barely finished traumatizing you and making everything horrible, could you do me a favor and forget all this? Let’s just get back to the dance.”

After a moment of silence, Baron gets up, as do you. An awkward pressure fills all the space between you and him.

You take a second to straighten your dress and jacket and stuff, and take a second to think about the situation. While Baron is kind of goofy, he is kind of good-looking. And at least he’s nice or whatever. Even if you don’t specifically like like him, there’s maybe something different going on here.

You glance up at him from the corner of your eye. “Hey,” you say, getting Baron’s attention. “Would I be here if I didn’t like you at least a little?”

Baron considers this. “I suppose not,” he says, quite composed. You feel a lemony, earthy kind of feeling from him, and he smiles. “You ready?”

You smirk at him and head off in reply, leaving him to catch up.

--

The rest of the dance goes surprisingly well. Nothing catches on fire, Ranthix fails to make a guest appearance, and you have a pretty swell time. You eat chips, dance dances, and party with your friends. (-25 Stress: 37/100) Moriah is, unfortunately, nowhere to be found. She’s not much of a party goer.

Hours slip by, and before you know it, more people are leaving than arriving. There’s no punch left, and the teachers chaperoning the event yawn with increasing frequency. You don’t know the time, nor do you care.
>>

>>
>>37069961

Eventually, however, time catches up to you. Or at least everybody else. Baron, Vikrama, and William are obviously fatigued – sweaty, fatigued, and increasingly easy to make laugh. Ro’s getting tired. You could probably keep this up forever, but then again, you’re not quite as human as any of them.

“I think I’m about done for the night,” Rowan pronounces. All of your group is taking a break on the sidelines by the depleted snack bar, and they’re of the same mind.

“Sierra looks ready for round two,” William says, laughing incredulously at you.

Vikrama makes an imperious gesture. “Be that as it may, I finished all my rounds an hour ago,” she replies. “I believe I’ll choose to retire for the evening.”

You groan. “Fine. Let’s just go, I’m not going to drag you guys around all night,” you say.

“I’ll call the limo,” Baron says, whipping out his phone to place the call.

Everybody starts making their way to the exit.

--

“Wake up, we’re here,” says Rowan.

Groggily, you wipe your eyes and squint out the window. Indeed, you’re pulling up to your house. Wow. Where does the time go? It takes you a second to get your bearings, but when the limo stops, you’re ready to get out. Also your feet hurt. Dancing in heels is hard work.

Will and Rowan get out first, and you follow behind, Baron coming out last.
>>
>>37069987

The kitchen light in the house is on, but everything else is off. The cool comfort of the dark presses in from above. Besides the idlying limo behind you, it’s extremely quiet. You can hear the winter breeze touching the rooftops and rustling tree leaves.

Baron gets your attention, and suppressing a smile, jerks at thumb over at Will and Ro. The two are holding hands, oblivious to surroundings, and whispering quiet things to one another. It’s kind of disgusting.

“I had a good time,” Baron says, looking at you with a smile. “A few bumps, but over all very good.”

“Yeah. It was pretty fun,” you say. “I don’t get to do stuff like that enough.”

“Well, if you ever need somebody to ask you to something, I’m up for the challenge,” Baron replies. “I’ll see you at school on Monday, right?”

>Thanks for everything.
>Sure – and don’t be afraid to ask me to stuff. Because I like stuff.
>Yeah. I’ll see you later.

Baron's already the kind of dude that wants to get with the type of girl liable to stab you over some minor shit.

Her being hellspawn doesn't really lower his survivability that much when you consider that this is 'Murica and Sierra'd probably be collecting guns&knives even if she was human.

Only massively increased risk is death by explosion.

Shark teeth going into the side of your face would feel awful and scare the shit out of you. Or worse.. if they're sharp enough you wouldn't feel it until your cheek fell onto the floor.
>>
>>37070527
>>37070551
Her teeth also don't inject anything. The venom is produced in the gums and it gets all in her mouth and coats the teeth like poisoned knives.

It wouldn't make sense for Sierra to not have this level of control over the venom because the fangs have the potential for allowing different kinds of venom. If it was just always on all the time, that would be impossible.
>>
>>37070006

“Actually,” you say, “do you like camping? Cause me and Ro are planning this trip.”

“I do like camping,” says Baron. “What kind of trip are you talking about?”

“You know. Up in Muir or something. Maybe just a night thing, like Thursday-Friday or something. Or Friday. We’re still planning it, but Vikrama’s coming too.” Although you haven’t invited her yet. There’s no way she’d turn it down, though.

It’s perfect plan. You control all the variables there – Borislav, the land, the company – you might even take Harvey along as backup. He’s good at dealing with people who’re freaking out. Hopefully they don’t freak out.

Baron nods. “Yeah, that sounds like a lot of fun,” he says. “Just let me know when you’re doing it.”

“Sure thing,” you say.

Rowan and William have finished up. Will starts getting back in the limo, while Rowan heads onward to the front door. You suppose it’s time to call it a night.

You offer Baron your fist. “Pound it.”

“Goodnight,” he says, knocking your knuckles.

You’re about to turn and head back to the house, but something in Baron’s disarming smile stops you. Knuckle pounding is kind of a stupid way to say good night after a big dance production thing. It wouldn’t be weird if you gave him a peck on the cheek or something, would it?
>>
>>37070872

It’s a split-second decision before either of you shift out of range, and you make the call to execute the strike. You stand up on your toes to get in striking distance, and go in for the attack while you’ve got him off guard.

You brush his cheek with your lips and pop back down. “Goodnight,” you mutter, immediately hurrying after Rowan toward the house. You only catch a feeling of surprise before you manage to get inside and bolt the door behind you.

There’s not really enough time to do all the things you ought to do, so you do the thing that has a time frame. You know Frederick is moving his operation forward, and if you’re going to make your thousands of dollars, you need to stay on top of it. You need that money if you’re going to… whatever. You don’t have a plan for the money, but you’re eighteen, and this is your last year of high school, so whatever money you can save up is probably good.

Stress: 15/100
Sanity: 92/100
Bloodlust: Hungering

You call up Derek and find out when you can meet with him. As it turns out, he’s going to do a full mission plan/briefing thing with the whole crew. You assume by the whole crew, he’s including the hired help, AKA Ranthix and also AKA you. You can meet Rax and make him spill the beans on the whole crazy heist thing last night.

Now, you know you’re going to have to talk to Isaac about taking a mercenary job at some point, but you’d like to know exactly what you’re getting into before you go to him with it. No reason bothering him over something you might not even decide to do.

You grab a bunch of quarters and start out early, heading to the mysterious rendezvous. Just in case, you make sure to go well armed.

You get off the bus near the hotel the meeting’s happening, and wander inside. You wander further until you manage to find the second-floor conference room Frederick’s renting out.

As you walk down the hallway toward the correct room, you start feeling giddy.

Yeah, writing updates takes longer than people might believe at first.

You don't only have to think about what to write but also how structure it and such. It might become really frustrating if you get blocked and your eyes get tired from writing and trying to decipher captchas.

Let Languid work on its own pace.

This is actually pretty legit, now that you’re doing it. It’s like you’re in the mafia or something. You grab the handle and head in.

The room’s pretty straightforward – a water cooler, a big long conference table and projector, and windows looking out on the street along the far wall. Derek, Zote, and a guy you assume is Alan are here – the reason being that Alan looks a lot like Scott. He’s got the same brickwall build as his brother, and the same mud-colored hair, even if he is shorter. He’s got a round face and beady, clever eyes, and wears a camouflaged hunting jacket patterned with sticks and leaves. His glamor’s good – you can’t catch anything abnormal about him. (Alan: 10/10 HP)

“I’m glad you made it,” says Derek, looking up from the map and other random things he’s got spread over the table. He’s looking a lot healthier than when you last saw him. (Frederick: 10/10 HP; 21/26 PP)

Zote doesn’t bother to spare you a glance. The robot (or whatever) wears the leather coat he was wearing when you first met him. His glass eye-plates gleam with the light of the sky outside. Zote is currently bowed over the table with a protractor and a pencil, and is carefully marking up the map. The map itself is made of yellowy, grainy parchment. Whatever region it depicts, you’re not familiar with it.

Alan doesn’t say anything. Instead, he watches you with steady eyes. You pick up a feeling of suspicion from him.

>(To Alan) You’re welcome, by the way. (You did kind of save him from demon hunters, indirectly)
>When’s the big guns going to get here?
>Gee Zote, nice to see you too.
>Where’s Scott? His secret boxing career take off?
>Drop the glamors and get comfortable. You want everybody to know what they’re dealing with.

>>Yeah, writing updates takes longer than people might believe at first.
That is entirely dependant on the QM. Some can have a well written, decent sized post out on 20 minutes, some need two hours to do the same. As long as the end result is good I do not really care which, though faster updates makes active participation easier.

When Sierra drops her glamors does she have the spooky skin or is that just a stress/battle thing?

Maybe we should keep them on. Everyone else has their's on. Well, ok. Only Alan does. But still. He probably has it on for a reason. It'd suck to drop the glamor and then have room service wander in. Or have someone see through the door when Ranthix opens it to come in since he's not here yet. Or get caught on camera or something stupid.
>>
>>37072649
I'd rather keep the glamor too. These guys already know what we are, we don't need to give them a demonstration.

It's more about personal comfort

“You’re welcome, by the way,” you tell Alan, meeting his look with one of your own.

Unexpectedly, he replies. “It was a close one,” he says. “You’re the one that killed Nabuth, aren’t you.”

“I offered him a way out, he didn’t want it,” you reply.

“I’m glad he didn’t,” he replies flatly. “So how do you know the Ferrans?”

You give look accusingly at Derek. “You didn’t tell them?”

Frederick lets out a breath. “It wasn’t relevant.”

Zote continues to chart out something on the map.

“I’m surprised robo-bro could keep quiet about it,” you say wryly, narrowing your eyes at him. “He was having a good time with all those grenades and spider bomb things.”

“He prefers looking to the future,” Derek replies. “Come over, let me show you our route.”

You traipse over. “So when’s big guns and Scott the Wall getting here so we can start the show?” you ask, curious.

“Scott’s not coming today,” says Alan, taking a seat by Zote, “but Ranthix might show up any time. He’s an old-school chaos knight – nothing can make them stick to a schedule.” This fact seems to make him smug for some reason.

>Well, nothing except the Imperiate.
>Yeah, I met Ranthix once. Glad he’s on our side.
>So Zote and you I get, Derek, but I don’t know Alan. Can you pull your weight?
>What are you getting out of all this, Alan? I mean, these guys are broke, so it’s not money.
>Find out about the mission (?)
>Other (?)

Ok, we don't actually know much about moving things through landwells. Closest that ever happened was when Snakebitch nearly snakeganked us through the unclaimed one, which we shut down by claiming it.

All we really know so far is that we're going to claim it to unlock the thing. Derek wanna shed some more light on the portal situation?

Also where the hell the damn thing is?

Guys, no. We specifically didn't take over the Conclave openly as the Imperiate because if that shit gets out then it will be bad for us.

Shit's fairly hush hush for now.

I'll be back in around 2 hours, hopefully. We will see. Unforeseen obligations may cut this short.

Does anyone currently control the landwell and if so who?
>>
>>37073238
>Remark on how "chaos knight" sounds pretty metal.
>Like, as metal as throwing bears.

>>37073391
Etenrhine government controls it. We don't know whether or not it's claimed by a landmaster that works with them or if government mages did non-landmaster magic stuff to it like Cordeliate did to the one on the mountain.
>>
>>37073342
Who said anything about announcing ourselves as the imperiate? We're just saying what we've heard, and I'm sure anyone who knows Rathix knows about he's a Thutal who served her.

So what's the plan if the U.S goverment gets a whiff of the plan and decides to interfere with the operation?
>>
>>37073635
Would they even? I'm not saying we shouldn't ask this, but maybe we should precede it with first asking whether or not the US gives a half as much shit about interplanar affairs as they do about international affairs.
>>
>>37073677
We are probably selling our enemies weapons as well, regardless of international or interplanar.
>>
Did anyone ever make a paste of all the emotion colors? Would be pretty convenient.

Most of them are closer to smells or flavors than they are to colors.

Fuck yes, almost missed this

We should definitely try to get a lightning gun thrown in on top of the deal, if that's at all possible.
