“Harder to what?” you say, a suspicion forming in your mind “Rainya you aren’t doing your trick in the Hive aren’t you?” you grip her by the arm “Rainya if any of the fae sense you, you’ll get imprisoned or worse.”

“Not often” she says, now she’s looking at you, a stubborn look in her eyes, though she doesn’t pull out of your grip “I *am* careful Shee.”

“Well good” you say, thinking.

Rainya does owe you, and she can look after Lirael, or perhaps Lirael can stay home today, or stay with someone else.

Most of the young duster kids go to, well you could call it a *school* you suppose, but enrolling her would make it feel kinda like she’s gonna be with you a while.

“Fine” you say to Rainya, dropping her arm and walking away, you call Lirael over.

Lirael leaves her breakfast only partly eaten and shuffles over to you miserably “Mphh” she says eloquently, looking unwell.

“You’ve been to school before right?” you ask her

She nods.

“Good” you say “This won’t be strange for you then.” You lead her through a maze of alleyways until you find a tin shack that looks no different to the others, to non-dusters at least. You knock on the door and a stout older woman answers “Ah Shee” she says, her face splitting into a smile, revealing a lot of gaps in her teeth and making her warts move in unusual ways “How nice to see you again, how can I help?”

“Ma Richols” you say, pulling Lirael forward “I was wondering if you could take another student today?” Inside the shack a dozen children ranging from age 5 to age 11 or so are sat around a central seat, where Ma Richols usually sits.

“Of course” she says, bending down and saying to Lirael “You like stories girl?”

Lirael just blinks at her slowly.

“Is she ok?” Ma Richols asks you, all motherly concern “She sick or something?”

“She’s just a little tired” you say to Ma Richols “And maybe shy too, I just need a moment to say goodbye before I leave.” Ma Richols nods understandingly and retreats inside, you crouch down next to Lirael and say quietly “No feeding from anyone today ok?”

“But I’m so thirsty!” whines Lirael “and I can make them forget...”

“No” you insist “don’t, but...” you add, thinking “you can read their minds if you feel scared ok?”

“K” she says in a small voice

“And ask Ma Richols to contact me or if I’m not available Rainya, if things get really bad, ok?”

“K” she mumbles.

“Good!” you say in a tone of forced jollity, herding her inside “Now have fun! See you tonight!”

Lirael doesn’t answer, Ma Richols waves to you “see you later Shee.” You leave.

You get to work and to start with everything is normal: you file timecards, take orders for jobs and quietly get on with your days, whilst trying not to count the minutes until work ends.

Then Mr Jerek arrives to see Mr Johnson. Mr Jerek is one of Mr Johnsons *special contractors*, he’s a man in his early 40’s that normally dresses in very well-tailored suits and is very calm, polite and yet at the same time menacing somehow.

He stomps past you, a scowl on his face and blood staining the front of a torn and ragged suit, you decide not to ask, he’s on the list of people allowed to see Mr Johnson without an appointment, still, best to warn your boss. You call through to him “Yes?” comes Mr Johnsons voice.

“Mr Jerek just walked in” you say “I think he is on his way to see you, he looks...upset.”

“Thank you Ms Hyul” says Mr Johnson. You get back to work.

An hour later Mr Johnson visits you in person “Ah Ms Hyul” he says. Mr Johnson is an older gentleman with a lined face. You’ve seen a lot of the other workers leaving the building in the last few minutes, rushing out.

“I’m afraid something has come up” says Mr Johnson, reaching into his pocket, you feel a moment of fear before he pulls out a handful of credit chips and offers it to you “Take the rest of the day off” he says “here’s a little something, go have some fun.” He hands you the money, a quick estimate shows there’s almost 2,000 credits here, more than 3 months pay.

“I expect to see you at the usual time tomorrow” he says, a kindly smile on his face “Now go, enjoy the day.”

You get your things and leave, it’s about midday.

You think over your options, you said you’d meet Ash tonight, though now that you have the afternoon free you could meet up with him, if he’s not in lessons or something.

You could go home and look after Lirael.

Or...you wonder, hmm, you’d need to get the bus out of the Hive to be safe but you’re pretty sure you would be able to teleport to that psychic training facility and maybe try practising your powers some more, or even awake new ones.

Or you could find something else to do with your time.

You decide there’s no harm in taking Lirael to the Psychic training facility. You get the bus out of the hive and go back to dust town. You knock on Ma Richols door and she answers “Shee” she says “back so soon?”

“Yeah” you say “work ended early, how’s Lirael?”

Ma Richol looks...concerned “She’s been listless and tired all day” she says “I think she’s sick, you should take her to the doctor.”

“I might just do that” you say as Ma Richols goes back inside and fetches Lirael for you, Lirael walks out to you and just stands there, swaying slightly. Ma Richols goes back inside to the other children.

“You really don’t look good.” You say.

“It’s hard” complains Lirael quietly

“What’s hard?” you ask

“Hiding” she says

Hiding..? “Hiding your wings?” you ask. Indeed, outside Lirael stays bundled up like any other duster but indoors most folk take off a few layers.

“And that, yeah...” says Lirael. Whatever, she’s not making a lot of sense.

You lead her away from the school, talking to her quietly “How about we go on an adventure instead? Want to explore a dungeon?”

“I’m not a kid!” insists Lirael, but she walks a bit faster. You take her back to your house and gather a few things, you never know when you’ll need your rifle for example.

“How are we getting there?” asks Lirael, lying down on your bed.

“The quick way.” You say, putting spare ammunition into your pockets.

“Ah translocation” she says “that’s good, less walking.”

You wonder, the training facility was a secret place set up for psychics, should you try teleporting inside it? Or maybe just nearby?

Best if you teleport to just outside it, who knows what defences you might get tangled in? Once you’re ready to go you pull Lirael to her feet and hold her close you to as you reach deep within yourself.

You’re not standing in your home, you’re outside the facility, the corroded door sticking out of the sand, you visualise it, the dry air, the heat of the desert, you focus on it as hard as you can. The world around you shifts and you’re there, the heat hitting you hard.

“Ack!” exclaims Lirael “Hot.”

“Yeah” you say, putting your hand in the opening by the door, you try not to think about how the needle piercing your skin feels like a tiny tooth. The door grinds slowly open and you and Lirael step into the lift, taking it down into the depths, Lirael is quiet on the trip down, has she seen this place in your memories already?

Once you are inside the facility. Lirael seems to have brightened up a little and is looking around her, turning her head quickly as she tries to take it all in “What is this place?” she asks excitedly.

“A training facility” you say “for psychics.”

At the same time the Teacher materialises next to you, Lirael jumps back with a little yelp and raises her wings protectively around her, as if trying to hide behind them.

“Welcome back Cadet Hyul” says the Teacher “I trust you are well?” It looks a little fuzzy, the nearby holoemitter must need fixing.

“Who’s that?” asks Lirael

“The AI that runs the place” you explain, at the same time the Teacher says “Cadet Hyul explain this intrusion!” It looks annoyed, as much as you can tell from its poorly resolved face.

“She’s with me” you say “She’s a guest”

“Understood” it says “I would like to draw your attention to the Cadet Handbook Section 9 subsection vi) *Sexual Relations are not permitted between Cadets and visitors*.”

There’s an uncomfortable pause.

“Shee did he just...?” asks Lirael

“It’s malfunctioning” you say as you set off walking, Lirael quickly follows you.

Activation takes 3 hours minimum and only has a 1/4 chance if we only stay in for the three hours.

We only have the afternoon, so staying for longer than three hours probably isn't possible and Lirael would be incredibly bored for the duration and/or get into mischief.

After attempting activation, we can't (or at least shouldn't) try again for a week.

Psychic Healing would be nice, but we should get it when we can afford to spend a large amount of time in one of the tubes to maximize our chances of actually unlocking the discipline, instead of blowing our once a week try at activation on a 25% chance.

“This is where the cadets sleep” explains the Teacher. A bunch of abandoned bunks, some with initials carved into the posts, scraps of paper, a busted datapad.

“This is the hydroponics facility” says the Teacher. Huh, an underground garden, or it would be if it wasn’t all dry cracked earth. “What happened to it?” you ask.

“The water pump is disabled” explains the Teacher “Contaminants were found in the water supply.” Huh...

“But what is it?” you ask, standing in front of a huge bulkhead with warning signs on it.

Lirael whimpers and hugs you, burying her face in your midsection.

“This is the sanatorium” says the Teacher “It is currently in lockdown.”

“It’s not” you say “the door is torn off.”

“The sanatorium records are classified” says the Teacher.

“We need to get away” insists Lirael “It’s bad in there.”

You try another location.

Yeah no, you are right. I personally don't care and would actually prefer having to look for more risky contacts for the psychic Rebell feeling, but logically speaking there is no particular reason for Shee to do that, unless the activation thing works in such a fashion that she would loose track of time.

All in all you spend almost 3 hours touring the facility, it’s huge, built to house up to 5,000 people at once, including living areas, food production, training rooms, a dance hall, it’s a self-contained underground town. Much of it is empty, or off-limits to you. What supplies there were here have long since rotted or been looted, though a few secure areas might still have something salvageable, or worth a few credits. From the Teachers somewhat scrambled statements, you gather that there are some weapons, or military vehicles here, if you could find those, that would be worth a lot of money.

“I’m tired” says Lirael “What are we doing now Shee?”

“You do not have clearance for those areas” says the Teacher.

You crouch down and say to Lirael “Climb on”. She gratefully wraps her arms around your neck and her legs around your waist, you stand up, Lirael on your back. To the Teacher you say “Fine, ok, tell me where they are so I can avoid them.”

“Er-Error” says the Teacher “you cannot go to the armoury on this floor.”

“Oh there’s one on this floor?” you say, setting off with a tired Lirael on your back “Great, is it this way?”

“You clearance, no” says the Teacher, before adding “please do not continue in that direction.”

The Teacher doesn’t want to tell you were things are, but it’s malfunctioning so badly that tricking it is easy, in certain ways at least.

It’s not long before you’re standing before a locked metal door labelled *Power Armour Bay 4*.

“It’s not right in here?” you ask the Teacher

“Please do not enter that location” says the Teacher, yeah sounds like an excellent place to start.

Lirael is half-asleep on your back, her breath warm against your neck. She’s tired and keeps complaining of being thirsty, you know it’s not for water...

You could find her someplace to lie down and sleep here, or maybe keep carrying her.

As for the other thing...you’ve seen some medical bays here but none clean, if any have blood supplies you’ll bet they’ll have gone bad a long time ago.

The only source of fresh blood around is you...or you could head outside and see if the Lago that live around here are willing to donate, or you could teleport back to dust town or someplace else to find a donor or other blood supply.

And there’s this door in front of you. The lock is electronic, you can probably get past it, or you could try teleporting past it, the Teacher won’t tell you the clearance level you need, only that you can’t go in, so it must be higher than level 2.

Lirael really needs feeding. You put her down and sit her against the wall, tilting her head back. You pull out your knife and re-open your wound, letting the blood drip down onto her lips. Immediately she starts licking her lips and opening her mouth wider, her eyelids flutter open and she drinks down every drop you give her. You feed her until she perks up and makes a grab for your arm with both hands.

You quickly pull your arm away and wrap it up tight “Ok that’s enough” you tell Lirael. Lirael struggles to her feet, her tongue darting out to clean any traces of blood from her lips and face “More” she begs.

“Not yet” you say “That’s as much as I can give right now.”

“I’m still thirsty” she says, but at least she’s standing under her own power, her arms folded across her chest as she scowls at you.

“I’ll think of something” you say, you’re not sure what, Ash never seemed to need this much blood this regularly, though you do recall he fed from you every few days, the two of you lying together in bliss, little shocks of pleasure running through you as he...

You snap back to the present. With Lirael taken care of, for now at least you examine the lock, fairly standard keycard and access number combination. You take a few tools out of your pockets and get to work...

It’s tough, this is a pretty sophisticated lock, but it’s also old and running on reserve power, a lot of its security features aren’t working properly. You manage to pry off the case and rearrange a few power flows until its convinced you just entered the right code.

The door opens smoothly as the Teacher says “Error” several times. You and Lirael enter cautiously and the place is lit by dim emergency lighting...

You see a large open area in front of you, with a half-dozen alcoves in the wall. There’re power sockets and old tools around the place as well as a lot of spare parts.

Most of the alcoves are empty but one of them has a partially assembled warmech power suit. It looks to be a Coreworlds Light Infantry Suit, a Mark 5, maybe a 7? You’re not sure. Either way it is an eight foot tall armoured suit complete with an oversized laser rifle and charged plasma sword.

You examine the suit, it appears to have suffered some damage, there’s scoring and burns on some of the armour plates, was it being repaired in here maybe? With all the parts around the place you might be able to get this thing working, though you’d need a manual and maybe a few days, plus the lighting in here is useless.

Lirael looks around the place, picking up tools and examining them before putting them down again.

This could be real asset, finally some real firepower, or the black market would pay a lot of credits for this. Either way, getting it out of here could be a task in itself, there is a larger door at the other end of the garage that might lead to a larger lift, maybe?

There was never a option for doing it in the day, hence why some where so adamant about not going to Ashs house after the dancing.

“Yes!” Lirael pumps a fist in the air and heads off, almost skipping, seems she got her energy back fast...

The two of you head to a medbay that you found earlier. Working together you search the place. Most of the drugs and medicine are long gone, used or looted you’re not sure. There’re still plenty of cheaper or more common supplies such as bandages and simpler medicines, including pills for blood loss. They’re in a sealed bottle but their age is unknown, and you don’t know much about such things, have they decayed, are they still good? You open the bottle and give it a quick sniff but the dull red pills don’t smell of anything.

You also find a terminal in standby mode that’s unlocked.

Curious, you hit playback.

A holoemitter warms up, projecting an image a foot tall atop the terminal, you see a woman that looks maybe 30 or so sat on a chair, her shoulders slumped “Medical Log Dr Dana Yunsa, date and time...I don’t even know any more, fucking fae they started to turn this place into one of their twisted Reclaimed worlds and...fuck, where was I?”

Lirael comes over to watch.

“Right” the woman straightens up again “The surgery didn’t work, the mutations were too far advanced, every time we cut away the chitin and altered musculature it grew back in the same morphology, it confirms our original theories about assimilation. The subject, the subject...” her voice cracks and she weeps for several minutes before continuing “The subject, Jennifer Yunsa, Psychic Cadet and confirmed Adept did not survive the most recent surgery, at 3 hours into the procedure she woke up and attacked the surgical team, the termination order was given by-by...oh fuck this I can’t do this!” She screams out loud and then starts crying again.

Lirael looks at you “Shee what happened?”

“I’m not sure” you say, waiting to see if the recording continues, it does.

“You fucking military assholes!” screams Dr Yunsa “You push these children further than they go and they mutate into monsters, screw you! You all deserve to die, fuck this, fuck everything!” She reaches forward and the recording cuts off, there is no more. You examine the terminal but all it contains are records of treatments given to various patients and the drugs administered. You’re no doctor so most of this makes no sense, but a lot of the patients that were listed as *terminated* got larger and larger doses of drugs in the days before they were, well, terminated.

You and Lirael search the medbay but there’s nothing else of interest here, Lirael seems more subdued after watching the recording. You try to cheer her up by giving her another piggyback but she just clings to you, quiet.

The terminal has a portable memory device, most of what you read is in medical jargon, but perhaps someone else can figure it out, you take it and put it in your pocket.

“Well” you say “let’s check it out, we don’t have to stay here.”

You easily find a cadet dorm with plenty of beds and spare blankets, as well as metal cupboards and cabinets that can be dragged across doorways to create barricades if you’re so inclined.

The blankets are a little dirty and dusty, but still far more comfortable than your shack. You also find a lamp with some power it in, and once plugged into the wall it starts to slowly charge, that’s the light problem sorted at least.

It’s getting late, if you want to get back to Dust Town in time to borrow some good hive-quality clothes from someone and have a wash before you go, you need to leave soon. Or you could stay longer but have less time to get ready.

You keep searching and find plenty of tape, wire and tin cups as well as objects that will make a lot of noise if they hit the ground. As alarms go it won’t be subtle, but it will be loud enough for you to notice. You probably want to set a few of them up around the place if you stay here. You don’t find anything more sophisticated but perhaps there will be some electronic alarms at the weapons fair.

As for toys...seems the people who lived here weren’t big on them. You do find a fluffy animal of some kind for Lirael, she rolls her eyes but takes it anyway. You also find a lot of books on military topics, tactics, field manuals on traps, how to build shelters, how to clean guns, some of this you already know, some you don’t.
You also find a lot of datapads, none have any power, you put a couple on charge, maybe they’ll have some games on them?

After some searching you find the instructors dorms but...

I completly agree with this, I just don't agree with leaving it out when convenient.
We haven't shown or played any issue with taking the drugs in the last few days/threads, and there was no particular reason for Shee to do so now.
Longterm, I'm all for getting rid of it.

The drug addiction only exists to replace the bite addiction. It won't live until we break that or give in.
