You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After showing off to everyone how adorable Carina is, you remembered that you kind of have a job to get back to. And figuring that now's as good a time as any to introduce her, you brought Carina up with you to go fetch Marianne.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

>"...Reinhold, who's that?" Marianne asks. "I don't recall Melanie -or- Arnaud mentioning any new trainee maids in the castle..."

"This is Carina," you say, stepping to the side so that the Princess can get a better view. "I saved her in Cateno and ended up bringing her back here because there's no way in hell that I could leave her alone in that hellhole."

Marianne's expression is completely blank.

"S... sorry for not mentioning it until now," you say, throwing up your hands, "but I figured that the news about your uncle was more pressing, and..."
"It's fine," Marianne sighs. "I half-expected you to do something like this anyways."
"...you're serious?" you say, completely dumbfounded.
"Well yes," she rolls her eyes. "Bringing home an adorable young child who you so heroically saved from getting eaten by a Leviathan is -exactly- the kind of thing that you'd do, is it not?"
"He saved me from getting a house fall on me," Carina says, correcting her.
"Ah, sorry for getting the details wrong," Marianne replies, smiling at the little girl.

And then she turns back to you.

"But the point remains that there's a grand total of -one- person who knows you better than I do at this point," Marianne says, coughing, "and I'm not talking about Luciana."

Beats the old man I had to share a room with. I'd gone five days without sleep due to pure pain prior to hospitalization (took sleep meds, the pain kept me awake through them and made me hallucinate).

Only sleep I'd gotten was surgery, which was maybe a couple hours at the best. Couldn't sleep due to all the loudness in the day and the nurses poking and prodding me to make sure I was okay. And in the night? My neighbor was this senile old man who argued with the nurse and refused to take his meds, or go to bed when it was the middle of the night and they asked nicely.

So all throughout the two days I was laid up in a hospital bed I had to deal with him yelling and shouting in derangement or the likes, kicking over the tray table beside his bed and knocking stuff over, all because he refused to take his damned medicine and do as he was told.

I did not sleep for another two days, even though I'd received treatment for the pain keeping me up in the first place. It sucked.

Wow. You're not even sure how to respond to that.

"But what I -don't- understand is why she's wearing a maid outfit," Marianne says.
"Oh," you glance at Carina. "Melanie gave her a bath a little while ago and lent her this dress, that's all."
"Your dress is prettier though," Carina says, smiling at the Princess.
"Thank you very much for that compliment, Carina," Marianne replies with a warm smile of her own.

You'd forgotten how good she is with kids...

"I figured that you'd want to adopt her instead of having her work here as a maid, anyways," Marianne says.
"Er..." you laugh nervously, "...she's just staying with me for a little while while I decide what I'm going to do..."

Nail on the head Marie.

Don't blame me, I wasn't even following this quest back then.

Reading the archives was pretty surreal, I was seeing everybody voting towards this huge, multi-sequence climax where the players kept pushing further thinking "Oh shit, this must be the routelock.", subsequently followed by the seismic fallout of people dismayed that that was, in fact, the routelock.
Seriously, what the fuck else could it have been?

To be fair, this is new territory for her too. She's used to being pushy, but Reinhold isn't the kind of guy you can be TOO pushy with, so she's trying to adjust. If anything, I'm surprised how much of an effort she's made in toning her behavior down compared to before we were an item.

Hey, I wrote up that option to postpone Sylvie because the character genuinely wasn't ready for any relationship so I get you completely.

What you are disregarding is all the people who jumped on it because they didn't want to go with Sylvie.
By the time we got to another potential waifu like 30 threads later the shitposting had gotten to such a point that everyone just wanted off that wild ride and went with the most insistent girl who had the most screen time.

I didn't vote for that but the alternative was weeks of threads filled with nothing but the most retarded and repetitive of arguments so it's not hard to see why many jumped at the first chance.

The main reason we're with Luci is cause idiots got greedy. They thought that Luci might get married off to someone else - if not Monique, then at a later date someone else.

And because anons are fucking losers and want everything for themselves alone, they routelocked Luci to make sure that nobody else could have her. Because despite having had no real interest in her before, the risk of losing her suddenly made her desirable.

Hell, the Jacksons even wrote a song about that kind of dickhead mentality called 'Want You Back'.

>When I had you to myself, I didn't want you around.
>Those pretty faces always made you stand out in a crowed.
>But someone picked you from the bunch, one glance was all it took.

I am still wondering about that. That might be a part of it. But it also felt like a lot of people were onboard the "not ready for relentionships" plan, so I don't know. As Carina reaches for your hand, you notice Marianne watching the scene with a smile on her face... she must really have a soft spot for this kind of thing.

Though you're not really sure what exactly "this kind of thing" really is, you definitely agree that it's nice. Too bad you have one last bit of bad news to give Marianne before you make it downstairs, hopefully it won't spoil her mood.

"Uh..." you turn to Marianne as you walk down the stairs.
"What is it?" Marianne asks, glancing at you. "There isn't a second orphan girl waiting downstairs, is there?"
"What?" you stare at her. "No, it's not like that."

Even if you're a bunch of bickering entitled children who don't deserve the archelon, I still like every girl in this quest and Luciana keeps getting better and better anyway.

>>37057260
Pretty much. The shitposting and vitriol was incredible, you'd have to have been there to believe it.
But Luciana was also a solid second best in the polls at the time, Sylvie only had a minority for her and was disliked by another vocal one, Nico had a waifu she liked more than us, we never interacted with Rana, and we didn't even know yet that Karel was a girl. As for Marianne, our relationship was progressing three times slower than with the other girls so people stopped believing in it.
It also made some sense for Luciana to win in-story, she was the most forward and had a couple of bonding experience with Reinhold already. Mostly involving murder, but still.

It can happen, not so much people who are raped once in an unlucky occurrence, but people who are consistently abused from a young age can become conditioned to prefer something similar to their abuse because their psychology is all fucked up.

"I have no idea," you say, shaking your head. "But nobody got hurt, they took care of all four of them without letting anything worse than the picnic getting ruined happen."
"Umm..." Carina look up, "...Citrine said that the other blonde Princess stabbeded one of them and Melanie's pretty girlfriend zapped one with lightnings just like the nice grampa who flew me out of Cateno, and then one of them got beat up by the boys and the last one got drowneded by the naked girl since they can't swim like the ones that ate everyone up back home."

"That's right," you reply.
"But some of the things that Carina said have me wondering... you said that Melanie's girlfriend 'zapped' one of the Salamanders?"

Oh. Of course she'd be surprised to hear that.

"Apparently Nicolette used some attack spell to kill one of those things before it could kill Sylvie," you say. "She was kind of depressed about having went back on her oath to only use the spear to fight, but I think she's over it now."

"She was trying to impress Sylvie," you shrug.
"I doubt that worked," Marianne remarks, a sly grin on her lips.

If two people put up a Sanctuary at two ends of a narrow corridor with somebody who wants to harm both of them in the middle of said corridor, then the two Sanctuary casters walk towards each other, what happens to the guy in the middle?
>>
>>37058188
Sanctuary dispels because they moved.
>>
>>37058188
once they leave the boundaries of the sanctuary spell, it would dissipate.
>>
>>37058188
Pretty sure Sanctuary is stationary, and uses a person as an anchor only to determine its initial location and who those entering need to have hostile intent toward in order for the Sanctuary to be effective.

I think it was also mentioned that it breaks if the subject passes its effective radius.
>>
>>37058188

Sanctuary is centered on the caster but its immobile.

Remember when we got the warning to 'Not step outside the circle' after casting?
>>
>>37058188
The Sanctuary itself is stationary, though the target is ableto freely move around within its boundaries. Once the target leaves the boundary, the spell dissipates.
>>
>>37058139
Reinhold probably isn't that mad about Karel, Adrien wasn't even told. Hell, he might even be alright, for some loose definition of alright, with being left in Cateno.

But I sincerely doubt he is okay with Adrien leaving Citrine there, especially now that he knows how goddamn easy it would be for him to have helped her.

He's not acting on this because it wouldn't help the situation, Adrien already feels like shit over it, Adrien has a lot of family reunioning to do that he'd rather not ruin for everyone, and he doesn't want to feel like he utterly hates one of the three people who gave a damn about him when he was young.
>>
>>37058188
Sanctuary doesn't move after casting and caster has remain inside the covered area or it stops working iirc.

Reinhold doesn't hate him. That was the "we" I was using.

Should you say something right now? Try to console her?

No, this isn't the time for that. Instead, you gently push Marianne along just as she breaks into a sprint...

...right towards Adrien.

And as if they were all expecting this to happen, everyone who was standing between the Princess and her uncle steps out of her path.

"Uncle Raoul!!!" Marianne shouts as she leaps into his arms. "You idiot, how could you stay away for so long!"
"Sorry, Marianne..." he replies smiling weakly as he returns her embrace.
"I haven't seen you in ten years and now you're all scarred up and... and..." she starts choking up.

Suddenly, she pushes away from him.

"And you have a DAUGHTER!" Marianne shouts.

"Y... yeah, I guess I do..." Adrien replies with a weak smile.
"How could you go around siring children with random women without even having the common decency to take responsibility!?" Marianne shouts.
"I know that I really messed up there," Adrien replies, bowing his head in shame.
"You did more than just 'mess up!'" she says, stomping her foot.

And then she starts coughing really hard.

"Oh shit, Marianne!?" Adrien reaches over to help, but she bats his hand away.
"I..." she coughs, "...I'm just getting over something, that's all."
"Are you sure that you should even be up and about in that state?" he asks. "I mean, I could've went up to your room is-"
"No, I wanted to come down to see YOU!" she says, glaring at him.

You can't help but cringe.

"Travelling the world without a care..." Marianne mutters under her breath.

Marianne then goes on a long, LONG rant about all the different ways that Adrien screwed up, including but not limited to ditching his family for a decade, inadvertently causing Karel to have to live as a boy for her entire life, and not having had the sense to realize that Agnes would have taken you in had he brought you and Citrine to Marconetti after Volker was killed.

Once she's done ranting, Adrien looks even more hurt than when Sir Gregory was beating on him.

>>37058366
So? You activate Sancuary in a room. The room has a finite amount of space maybe equal to or even smaller than the shell's area of effect. Your enemy obviously can't remain inside that area, and with how the world has been described as functioning, I don't think it would allow a purely defensive spell like that to be used in an offensive manner. Since two objects can not occupy the same space at the same time, the enemy gets shunted out to the nearest free space like squeezing a wet bar of soap.

The king steps out into the gate area where everyone else is, and freezes in place. Slowly, his head turns towards his brother... and he breaks into a mad dash.

"LITTLE BROTHER!!!" Thierri shouts. "You're finally home, this is the BEST surprise!"

Weakly, Adrien turns towards the approaching King and waves a greeting.

"Long time no see, Thierr-"

THUD

Not yet. I'm sure that Gregory is going to open his big fat mouth, though.

Instantly shifting back to his usual pleasant expression, the King rests his hand on his niece's shoulder.

"So is 'Karel' your real name," he asks, "or..."
"It is," Karel nods. "Karel Alysse Granache."
"Ooh, so you even have a fitting middle name!" he laughs. "I think that meant what... 'tranquility,' I think it was?"
"Yeah," she nods.
"Well that's certainly a nice one, I like the sentiment. "IT's too bad that you had to dress like a boy your entire life..."
"Yes," Marianne nods. "I agree."

A sudden thunderous clap of the King's hands sends Karel jumping.

"Alright, let's do this!" Thierri shouts.
"...do what?" Adrien asks, clutching his aching stomach.
"Well my brother's finally home and I found out that I have a niece too," he replies, crossing his arms. "What the hell do you -think-?"
"Food?"
"Damn straight," Thierri says with a wide grin. "Arnaud, would you mind telling the kitchen folks to prepare a huge meal for everyone?"
"Of course," Arnaud replies with a bow.

Once Arnaud's left the room, Thierri turns back to Karel.

And then he lifts her into the air.

"Wwwwwhat are you doing!?" Karel shrieks.
"Making up for lost time, of course," Thierri replies. "You're every bit as light as Marianne, you know that?"
"Th... thank you, now would you please let me down!?"
"As you wish, Princess," he laughs.

>>
>>37059123
We can just use Marianne's.
>>
>>37059054
So, they call Reinhold over and he brings Carina with him. When asked who she is, he explains she's an orphan who he couldn't in good conscience leave in Cateno.

Thierri punches his little brother again.
>>
>>37059117
Come on, crying, yelling and people hitting each other?

It's a proper family reunion.
>>
>>37059104
When you think about it, this whole scenario could easily have played out without Karel being too involved had he not pushed her towards opening up to the Migaults.
Then we just would have had the day filled with only our return to Cateno, murdering leviathans, discovering Arnaud's an elemental, avenging Citrine's folks, rescuing an orphan, bringing Adrien back to the palace, the picnic being attacked by salamanders, Inaba ascending, Nicolette breaking her oath and bikini-Rana WITHOUT Karel being outed, and what a boring day THAT would have been.

All without anyone suspecting him, and he gets to enjoy a feast.

Reinhold's planning skills are unparalleled.

Keeping to his word, Thierri places Karel back on the ground... but then rests his hand on her shoulder and pulls her close to him.

"Hey Melanie!" he calls out.
"Yes, Your Highness?" Melanie shouts back as she hurries to his side.
"Take Karel's measurements so that we can get her in a nice dress to wear for her big welcoming into the family, alright?"
"Of course," she replies with a curtsey.
"A d-" Karel's eyes grow wide. "A DRESS!?" she shouts. "I- I can't wear- I mean I really don't want to wear a-"
"Nonsense," the King shakes his head. "Every young girl likes to fix herself up all pretty every once in a while!"
"Well I've never done that before," Karel says as she tries to squirm out of his grip, "and I really don't want to, so..."
"C'mon, don't be shy!" he laughs. "Melanie will get you looking so pretty that Emilio over there won't be able to keep his eyes off of you!"

Beet-faced, Karel starts mumbling under her breath as Melanie pulls her away.

>Every Granache feast comes with a Power Rangers-esque disclaimer to new guests warning them that everybody present is a professional competitive eater and that their feats should not be imitated by amateurs.
>>
>>37059541
Reinhold was raised in the brothel, then joined the army, then joined the palace.
He had a steady progression of calorific intake and as bad as the brothel was, it would have been nutritionally preferable to eating off the streets.
Carina's going straight from street pickings to gourmand, royal dining. Not that I expect Arch to put a happy little girl suffering from calorie overdose into his story because it's needlessly grim and thematically inconsistent but Carina would be at a greater risk than Rein.

>While yuri is always fun, I'd much prefer to move along with another story rather than revisit the same stuff with a reverse-gender protagonist.

Roll 2d10 to determine what's the next story archelon's gonna write:

1. Teenagers with attitude become heroes of justice.
2. Half-insane man with very special skills wants revenge.
3. Love story between a nerd and a fictional heroine.
4. Yuri shenanigans among octogenarians.
5. Ineffectual villain tries to take over the world.
6. Average man discovers he's the chosen one, sabotages every attempt to make him fulfill his destiny.
7. A girl and her dog run away and join a circus.
8. Geneticists clone dragons.
9. Devil sells soul to teenager.
10. Lewd harem antics.

And the setting:

1. Neonoir in underground cockfight circles.
2. Giant robots with ridiculous haircuts.
3. Typical fantasy world only without non-human races, magic, or transparent culture rip-offs.
4. Kung-fu fighting in darkest Africa.
5. Japanese highschool WITH A TWIST.
6. Space Opera with space whales and space Ahabs.
7. Apocalypse in Detroit.
8. Sword and sandal with Ray Harryhausen homages.
9. Renaissance court full of treacheries.
10. Island literally in the Sun.
