Robin looks up at you and whispers. "W-Were you just putting on a show?" She's trying to look mad.

You grin down at her. "Depends, does that make you hotter?" You really hope it does, because the creeping spectre of her being upset with you isn't something you want to take on right now.

She sinks into the water defeated. She blows bubbles. Phew. It's good to be the dominant one. You grab her hand to give it a squeeze to make sure you're alright. She squeezes back, but continues to bubble.

Jeanine tosses you both a towel and grabs a hefty looking branch.

"Wait! Both of you." You shout-whisper. "Something isn't right."

Clair starts moving a boulder with her mind. "No kidding! You're all messed up!"

"No really. Just stop a second." They hesitate and put down their weapons. Jeanine adjusts her towel and waits.

The smoke starts to clear. Vance keeps his eyes away from your direction. "So how are we doing this? Are you all leaving first or..."

You all freeze. There are two Vances. 'Vance-i'? Do you just drop the S sound? Whatever, there are two of them! Both are facing away from you.

As the one with the quickest reflexes, the burden of acting first usually falls on you. This is no exception.

"Vance! Grab the other Vance before he gets away!" Confusion is becoming both your favorite Pokemon move and best enviroment. Both of them face each other. You don't have time to watch it go down because you're busy scrambling for your Pokeballs by the side of the stream. Even with friends around you don't like to let them be out of sight if you can help it.

You toss out Levi and Trunks.

Levi, the mighty Gyarados, lets out a triumphant roar! Robin stumbles back in surprise. Even Clair and Jeanine hesitate for a second.

Trunks, your Trevenant, lets out a happy noise. Most Trevenant's have a wicked laugh. Somehow his innocent smile gives him an even creepier edge. Not to you, but in general.

No time for that now. You spring into action. "Levi! Grab that one! Trunks, hold the other!"

Both Vances spot circling each other long enough to catch a glimpse of your Pokemon tackling them.

Levi surprisingly as a little trouble. Her Vance is fast and strong. He almost gets free before she redoubles her efforts and stops being gentle. Anyone else would be squished. Vance is just stuck.

Trunks restrains his easily. At least, for a second. You finally get a good look at hers, and the face is inhuman. Not gross just featureless. Clair's eyes lose focus, Robin pauses to think for a second.

"Ditto," they say in unison.

You focus back on the Not-Vance. It's melting! Trunks panics and backs away.

The pink puddle starts scurrying into the forest.

You probably have an opening to attack it, but it didn't really hurt anybody. You chase after it into the forest, grabbing whatever of your clothes you can. You duck and dodge branches and rocks as you slip on a shirt. You pause for half a second to get both pantlegs up, barely losing momentum. Forget confusion, This is your element! You hear your friends way behind you.

You're gaining on it! Ha! Sharp air fills your lungs as you start getting a good workout. It's paying off though. Each step brings you closer. You inches away from touching it now. You leap over a dead branch.

Just as you almost have it, you come into a giant pink clearing. Dozens, no, maybe even hundreds of pink puddles move and goop all over the ground, rocks, and trees. A large mass of them notice you and start puddling closer.

You're friends are still catching up. The goo is getting closer.

You want to run but fight the urge. The ditto circle around you, but don't act aggressively. You meekly wave at them and try to show that you're not a threat. They make strange little noises and slowly close off your exit. You're not sure if that's to trap you or if they're just all trying to get a good look at you from all sides.

They're getting really close though.

One latches onto your leg. Another slides down from an overhead branch and rests on your shoulder. You gently try to pick it off you and put it down, but two more take it's place. It's really hard to get a grip on them

You're feeling just a tad claustrophobic. You're usually pretty good at reading faces or body language but that's not really an option here.

One climbs up your arm and into your sleeve.

They're crawling all over your body now. This is getting too weird. It's not cold or warm or comfortable or uncomfortable, but very alien and strange.

Gently, you take out your flute. Before you can play it you hold it vertically to let a curious little pink Pokemon slide out. They're really getting everywhere!

You blow a soft note. All of the Ditto freeze up at attention. You blow another and they sort freeze up in a different pose. As soon as you stop though, they become very active. They swirl around you quickly. Do they really like it?

Do they really hate it?

You play a few more notes and the sound travels through them like a wave. Wait, sound is a wave. Whatever. They spike up and down according to the notes you play. Not wanting to stop, you break into a song.

The ditto respond to every note, every inflection. You're able to direct them a bit. It's hard to tell what note does what exactly, but there is a very obvious correlation between what you play and what they do.

This is fun! You see a few happy ditto faces now, finally. They're having a ball as you...well, give them an impromptu ball.

Just as you're really getting the hang of it, your friends come through the bushes. They all freeze in surprise. Levi looks like she's smelling something she doesn't like, and Trunks looks worried about you.

A ditto transforms into Vance upon seeing him. Another into Jeanine. You keep playing and they both vibrate and dissolve back into their normal shape. The Vance one was a little harder though.

"Kat," Vance slowly shifts towards you. "Are we okay?" That one Ditto turns into Vance again.

You play a particularly sharp note to show how the ditto react, then take your mouth off of it. "We're fine! I have this. Everyone can catch their breath." You forcefully dissolve it with a quick ditty. It's even harder this time around, but it still falls apart.

You see clones of everyone popping up. There are a handful of Clair, Jeanine, you, Vance, and Robin. A Levi and Trunks appear.

Yeah, you have this. You move around a bit and play, and the ditto somewhat follow your lead.

Clair pokes a Vance. "I like this one better. It seems smarter."

Jeanine looks at a copy of herself. "My butt isn't this big, is it?"

When nobody is looking, Clair lets her eyes lose focus for a second. The ditto clone of her she's closest to gets a slightly curvier form. "Better," she says under her breath as she nods in satisfaction.

Two Robin's hang off your sides. You could get used to this.

Robin is thinking hard, like she's trying to remember something. "I think I've read about this..." She takes out her Pokedex and fiddles with it.

Vance looks around, and starts to relax. "Well, I guess if they're friendly, there's no harm in taking a quick break."

Levi looks her clone up and down. She is displeased and confused.

Trunks tries sucking up to the wrong 'you'.

The pink blobs spread out more and create more clones. There sure are a lot of them now.

Robin takes out some food. A ditto immediately swarms it and absorbs it off her hand. That's the most aggressive you've seen them act.

But they're still responding to your flute playing. Nothing to worry about.

"Let's leave them alone," you suggest before quickly going back to playing the flute. Your friends follow your lead and back away. Levi is getting awfully agitated at her clone anyway. She seems to think she's being mocked.

Robin keeps tapping her finger to her face. She's thinking hard. She snaps her fingers. "Right! I've read about this! This is their mating season!"

Clair stops over a few. "Ditto's don't have a mating season, doofus. They don't even have genders."

Robin doesn't back down. That ditto she fed is scurrying over her. "It hasn't been well published, but one of the leading scientists in the field wrote a paper suggesting they breed by gathering nutrients, forming a cohesive unit, and breaking off into more dittos than they originally had."

Jeanine giggles as a few swarm over her. They seem to be responding less to your notes now. You all decide to back away a little faster now.

Clair thinks again. "Wait, I do remember that paper now! I skimmed that part because I didn't care but I was supposed to review it."

Vance gives her a look. "You?"

"What? They wanted my input if there was a psychic field dittos might have with each other. Nothing I know of. They're just good at imitating from the data I saw."

"Very interesting stuff, but how do we make them leave us alone?" Jeanine is getting worried as some of the ditto are sticking with you guys even though you're getting away from the main group.

You don't have a good answer, you just keep backing away and playing whatever notes seem to work. Slowly but surely, most of the dittos lose interest. Levi reluctantly follows you. She looked like she was getting a little territorial with her clone.

There are only a handful of them following you now. You're decently far from the main blob.

As true as this would normally be, the reality is that this is Gobble asking us if we'd like one in the extended party.

I think it might lead to some interesting possibilities, since in an open-ended game like this we can use it for a lot of clever things, both in and out of combat.

Well, assuming all our mons fully evolve, we have:

Water/Dragon
Poison/Flying
Electric/Steel
Grass/Ghost
Psychic
Water/Flying
Fire/Dark
Rock/Dragon

Ideally I'd like to get something of every type but having perfect coverage is fine too.
As it is we have a distinct lack of Fighting, Ground, Ice, Fairy and Bug coverage but Fighting and Ground are incredibly similar, Ice is arguably covered decently by things like Destiny's Ice Beam and Fairy is a kind of weak attacking type unless you have STAB from it and I don't see Kat ever using a Fairy type that isn't Grumpig.
Which means the best option for us to catch is something like a Heracross (Bug/Fighting), a Scolipede (fits Kat's Aura and provides Bug) or a decent Fighting type, maybe a Bisharp or Scrafty?

Or we could just get bestmon, pic related.

Jeanine ponders. Ditto mimics her some more and reflects her pondering face. The ditto begins to lose interest and slip away. "Wait!" She takes out a Pokeball. "You're mine!"

Ditto mimics her pose and mouth movements. There's no sound though. It starts to realize that her posture means that something is up, and tries to run.

"Oh no you don't!" She throws a Pokemon at it. It's Thistle, her Bulbasaur. You remember that it's a bit of a thief, just like Vance's Sneasel.

As soon as Ditto turns into Thistle, she pulls Thistle back and takes out Creed, her Scyther.

You make sure Levi is on standby to try to block it's path in case ditto tries running. You don't want to interfere, but ditto are especially slippery and you did arrange a lot of this.

The battle goes on for a short period until Jeanine manages to catch it without any major incidents. Vance runs in and gives her a hug, Robin follows suit with you. Clair just sort of mumbles a polite congratulations. She's still an outsider, and doesn't do a lot of touching.

Jeanine is feeling pretty good! She can't wait to get to know her new Pokemon. Her enthusiasm is infectious and everyone becomes a little happier.

You all enjoy a quick breakfast. You've burned most of the morning away now. Vance did a decent job cleaning up after your incident this morning.

You take a dish out of Jeanine's hand. "You guys go ahead and do whatever you'd like. I've got this today." They put up a pretty weak protest, but give way when you insist. "It's the least I could do after this morning."

"I wouldn't expect less. We're behind schedule because of you after all." Clair leaves you to it.

Clair really is rough around the edges. You get her, but even you get a little fed up with her attitude sometimes. One of these days Jeanine is going to belt her. You think Clair has been trying to get a reaction out of people because she isn't reading your friends minds. At least if she makes people mad, she'll always have a good idea of what they're thinking.

You really want to get some training done, but feel guilty about all the trouble you caused. You rack your brain on chores you can turn into training sessions, but decide against it. Not today. Vance and Jeanine go off for a 'jog,' Clair takes a nap, and Robin trains with her Pokemon. She's really working hard lately.

All of your Pokemon finish up their breakfast. You tell them to go play but keep in sight. Vlad flies off out of view, Levi acts grumpy, Trunks tries to pull Dan to the ground and Dan just floats around dragging Trunks with him. Raistlin and Destiny have some sort of competition destroying leaves. Raistlin with his Hidden Power fire, Destiny with her Signal Beam.

As you're scrubbing the hell out of Robin's stuff, you notice a small booklet fall out of her bag.

You think it's a diary. You look over to Robin. She's very far away. There's nobody around.

I feel really awful about that. I thought of writing a huge apology letter but it just felt like I was rambling excuses or making it my personal blog.

I had a bit of a doxing scare at a time I was applying for a job with a background check. I also had some family stuff going on and sort of just dropped off. After awhile I felt so bad about not communicating at all for so that that I just tried to run away. That only made me feel worse.

I know that's not really an excuse for not saying anything at all. I'm really not an emotional person and generally act like a grown adult, but I don't really have a solid explanation for doing that. Compounding guilt maybe?

I can promise I won't do that again. If I do vanish without a trace, it'll be because I actually am kill. Hell, I don't care if I do get doxxed. I mean, I'll avoid it if I can, but the thought doesn't bother me.

I always really loved doing this quest. I can't believe I let my weirdness fuck things up like that. I've been in such a good mood since Christmas when /tg/ convinced me to suck it up and come back (in nicer words.) I swear I'm normally more normal.

No the monster hunter/attack on titan bits were fine enough. His best part about that quest was his character writing. He did the interactions and the trial and tribulations REALLY well. Which is why it pissed me off to no end that he would just kill off a main character like that. For what it's worth:

I've been given a few weeks notice to move out of my flat - while I'm way out of town visiting family for Christmas. Which has put a damper on the holiday spirit somewhat, and cost me more money than seems reasonable in flight changing fees to get back sooner.

I just found this quest was back right now, and while I don't yet have time to catch up with what you've done since you got back, knowing Gobble is not actually kill after all is has definitely given me something to look forward to once I've got this shit dealt with. So thanks for that, and I hope you keep up with it for as long as you're able.

I'm a rather avid player of Southern Shores and as far as something to know before diving in. While it is explained in quest, the world is not the Pokemon world, it is essentially a technologically advanced earth, with loads of plot regarding how Pokemon came around and the implications surrounding how Pokemon behave and why. I really quite enjoy the story and I also enjoy chatting with the QM while he runs (in between updates). The QM's rather gregarious personality and player interaction is really what helps cement my interest in the game as well. I always enjoy QMs who get excited with, or in opposition to, the players. Its just nice having that interaction with the person running the story.

All in all, it really shines through that Southern Shores is a labor of love and that the QM finds a lot of personal enjoyment in running the quest and interacting with the questers. I seriously recommend it and I hope it continues for a long while.

As far as Medievalmon Quest, I do play it on occasion but the combination of, what feels like, long update times, slow pacing and my own life making me miss parts of the quest leaves me interested in the quest but unable to really dig in and feel truly absorbed in the quest. I do still enjoy it though.
As far as I am aware the world is still somewhat nebulous, but it seems to be set in a custom Pokemon world in a medieval time period where Apricorns are a rather new and almost unknown commodity. We had the chance to buy one at the beginning of quest, passed, and have yet to encounter another opportunity to purchase one.

All of that said, its a good quest and one that I hope continues as I'd like to see where it goes.
