I am Sief Atanor, only son of Aaron and Sofia Atanor, heir to the lands of House Atanor, and I am frightened. I will not show my fear though, my father told me that nobles and golem knights both must set a proud example for their people to follow. Perhaps if I was grown up, strong and brave like him, this would be easier, but I am Sief Atanor, only son of Aaron and Sofia Atanor, eleven years old, and I think I'm about to die.

I clutch a dagger so tight my knuckles turn white, willing my hands not to tremble. I was in the family carriage, with my mother and her handmaiden Loren, returning from a meeting of Artificiers in Tayne, accompanied by some servants and house guards. A simple journey through safe lands on well-patrolled roads, at least that was what my mother told me. If that's true, why can I hear screaming outside, why do I have the bitter taste of blood in my mouth, why is Loren shaking my unconscious mother where she lies, struck on the head as the carriage shook violently?

The carriage door swings open, a tiny misshapen man hopping up, staining the carpeting with muddy feet, wiping blood from a wicked blade. He blinks at me with wide, pale eyes, a row of needle-sharp teeth twisting into a cruel grin. In some small rational part of my mind I recognize it from drawings my mother once showed me in a book years ago, a boggart, one of the cruel subhuman races that stalks the wilds.

“Greetings little lordling, on behalf o' the great and mighty Bonesnapper, son o' Titans, we have come for you and yours. Now throw down that knife little lordling that I may kill you clean and save your fine little skull intact for my collection, then offer up the women to mighty Bonesnapper's cooking pot.”

The twisted creature is no bigger than me, giving a mocking bow as it speaks. I shiver, listening to the screams outside. I am Sief Atanor, I will not allow this monster to bring harm to my mother or her handmaiden. I will be strong. I will make my father proud.

You are currently inside the family carriage, it is large and spacious, enough for four people to live comfortably within for extended periods of time. Unfortunately following a sharp blow to the carriage by some unseen assailant when the attack began, the carriage is currently in disarray, windows broken, personal belongings and your mother's artificier tools scattered about. You are holding a dagger, a gift from your father on your tenth birthday. Behind you is your unconscious mother and her handmaiden Loren, neither look in any particular state to defend themselves. Standing at the entrance to the carriage is a Boggart, a stunted, misshapen and vaguely froglike man with wrinkled, leathery skin, razor-sharp teeth and wide, pale eyes. He is dressed in filthy rags and clutching a bloodstained butcher's knife.

Please note that the current stats in the character sheet above for Sief are not accurate as that is for 18 year old Sief Atanor, Golem Knight in training. You are currently Sief Atanor, frightened eleven year old.

Also please note that, as those of you who are aware of my other quest might have guessed, this quest will include smut. Not that it will be a smut quest per say, but there will certainly be sex scenes. No /ss/ though, so don't expect any smut for flashback eleven year old Sief!

Well, for a plan, how about we suddenly focus behind the boggart with our eyes/head, like we just saw someone, possibly shout "guard, kill it!" or something, then find a book or piece of wood to block his knife with, if we do it will his blade should get stuck in the object and ti will reduce his ability to swing which should make him unable to cut through it, and then we stab him or slice him somewhere, preferably the throat. Maybe if we can kick something at his face before he turns around, it would be good too.
Any other plans, anons?

I don't agree with this; probably because it seems as though he's planned this out and thought it through.

I fight back a wave of nausea at the sight of fresh blood on the boggart's knife. The creature leers, taking a step forwards. Gulping down a nervous breath, I try to get my thoughts under control. It's strange the things that flow through your mind when you're frightened. My father teaching you how to hold your dagger steady, how to parry and thrust, laughing as my serious face. Sitting with my mother watching a play by some visiting actors one summer evening, the clever princess distracting the witch's stupid gremlin by calling the name of her prince. I'm not sure I should admit that I got the idea from a princess, but... maybe I do have a plan.

I don't know what's become of Gerald, the captain of the house guards riding with us, but I call his name out all the same, eyes over the boggart's shoulder.

It works better than expected, the boggart's bulging eyes go wider still, spinning around lashing out wildly with its bloody knife, but there's no-one there to meet it. I grab blindly for something to use, my hand coming to rest on a thick bedsheet strewn across the carriage floor.

“You lying little lordling, you can't outwit the likes o' me,” the boggart shrieks, spinning back around, thrusting blind with his dagger.

It almost feels like I'm watching it all happen from outside, the rusty tip of the blade jabbing for my stomach, getting tangled in the sheet and thrown from the boggart's hand. My hand aches from clutching the dagger, my head throbs, I thrust forwards, pushing against the sudden resistance to my strike. The ground falls out beneath me as I push into the boggart, the pair of us tumbling from the carriage to the muddy ground. The boggart gurgles, gnarled fingernails scraping at my arms, stinging my flesh, then it goes still.

>>
>>37046144
I look down to my dagger, buried to the hilt in the boggart's chest, pushed deep by my weight as I fell onto the beast. I fight back another wave of nausea, clutching a bloody hand to my mouth as I gag. I did it though, I can't embarrass myself now. I protected my mother and Loren.

“He killed Grixis!”

“Nasty little lordling, poor Grixis.”

“Kill him back we should.”

Oh spirits. I feel tears burning behind my eyes as I look up. A dozen more boggarts clustered around the carriage.

“Run, lord,” I hear Gerald wheeze, reaching for my weakly as a boggart absentmindedly slits his throat.

“Bonesnapper, the little lord, he killed Grixis,” one of the boggarts wails.

An impossibly large figure looms from the evening gloom, fat and warty, the boggarts not even to his knee. It's a giant, a real giant, one of the titan races.

“Who gives a fuck 'bout stupid Grixis, he's dead cuz he's weak,” the giant grunts, scratching a lumpy hand over his pot belly.

“But master Bonesnapper, the little lordling, we should punish him, he killed one of your slaves, you want to eat him?”

“You sayin' Bonesnapper likes little boys, is that wot you saying 'bout me, you little shit?”

“We like little boys, master, with little skulls to carry easy and shine up nice.”

“Well Bonesnapper ain't like you shits, Bonesnapper likes women, juicy ones fer 'is cooking pot. I smell a couple real good ones in that cart. So get the fuck out my way, little lord, so Bonesnapper can 'ave a bite ta eat.”

This is it. In the end I couldn't do anything, I couldn't defend my mother, I couldn't fight, I can't even run. My legs feel like dead weight as I struggle to stand from the dead boggart's corpse. I want to run, I want to hide, I want to bury my head and wish for all of this to be over, but I can't. I am Sief Atanor, only son of Aaron and Sofia Atanor, and I will face my end with dignity for my family's sake.

Do you seriously expect to take down a giant with several Hobbarts around?
Please don't overestimate an eleven year old child, there is no way we'll win this without suddenly awakening to sudden high level latent sorcery or martial mastery.
If we are doing this (god forbid) then use throw Grixis' knife at someone and use the bedsheet to restrict the movement/sight of the hobbarts or the titan while we run between/around the titans legs and slice either his tendons or his groin/stomach, getting udner the carriage should work for escaping the titan but not against the hobbarts.

I pull myself to my feet, everything feels heavy, like I have a great stone strapped to my back. I will face my end with dignity, I owe my family that much.

“An Atanor will not be a coward. I will not step aside!” I shout, cursing myself inwardly for the tremble in my voice. I pull the dagger up with me, clutching it extra tight lest the blood and sweat make it slip from my fingers.

“Who gives a shit, fucking kill him,” the giant grunts.

I have plans, plans to charge the giant, to feint, to trick him into hitting the boggarts as I slice his tendon. Spirits know why I thought I could do all that. The boggarts are upon me before I can charge. I lash out at one with my dagger, not even trying to aim now as panic sets in. The boggart howls, clutching its ruined eye, kicking and thrashing on the ground. Even as I take some small measure of triumph in my hit, I feel a searing pain in my shoulder.

“I got him, made him bleed I did,” one of the boggarts cackles, twisting the blade in my flesh.

I cry out, I can't stop myself, my legs give out under me as I stumble, my vision blurring.

“Stupid little shit,” the giant laughs, raising a massive hand high overhead to crush me.

Everything goes still, time slowing down. Then I hear a mighty crash, followed up by an agonized scream so loud it makes my ears feel like they'll burst.

I blink back tears, looking to my side, to the fat, twitching hand lying severed at the wrist by the giant's side.

(cont)
>>
>>37046664
“What the fuck, my fucking hand, ya cut off my fucking wanking hand, you shit.”

The giant lurches around to face this new enemy. My eyes widen. The polished stone and sleek lines of steel and silver, the smooth face and dour eyes, the great gleaming sword flickering with runic energies. Raziel, my father's golem.

“I'll rip ya open and grind up yer gizzards ya golum-riding shit,” the giant bellows, swinging his remaining meaty hand in a clumsy swing at Raziel.

He may as well be moving in slow motion, the sword traces a graceful arc through the air, and the giant's other hand joins the first on the roadside.

“Me other hand, you fuck, you fucking fu-”

Whatever other expletives the giant had planned are brought to a sudden end as the backswing separates head from shoulders, and bonesnapper's corpse crumples to the ground, trees uprooted by the fall. The boggarts shriek, scattering in all directions, some making it to the treeline, most being stomped underfoot or reduced to a bloody mist as Raziel's sword cleaves through them.

As the panicked flight of the last boggart fades into the undergrowth, Raziel drops to a knee before me. I pick myself up, wiping mud from my bloodied knees.

The chestplate opens, a tall, powerful figure stepping out, everything I hope to be. He hops down from the knee to the ground, he smiles a warm smile, laying a hand on my uninjured shoulder.

“You fought bravely, son, I'm proud of you.”

I hear a voice from behind me. I turn, Loren is helping my mother from the carriage. She drops to her knees as she reaches me, hugging me close, tears streaming down her face. She speaks, and maybe it's the pounding in my head, or the searing pain in my shoulder, but I just can't make out the words.

She speaks again, telling me something important.

Then I wake up.
>>
>>37046677
I sit up in my bed, yawning and rubbing absentmindedly at the scar on my shoulder. Loren busies herself in my chamber, preparing my clothes and setting out water for washing.

“Good morning, Lord Sief. Slept well I hope?”

I grunt, not the first time I've had that dream, and it won't be the last.

“That well, eh. Well when you find your senses, breakfast is waiting for you. Sir Paxton will no doubt want to begin your lessons as soon as you're done.”

“Thank you Loren. Anything else?”

“I believe some people are here to see your father about some sort of banditry issue.”

“and my father is dealing with it?”

Loren gives you an apologetic smile, as if you'd expected anything else.

“I believe Lord Aaron is still indisposed at present.”

“Breakfast it is, then I suppose I'll go wake father.”

“As you say, Lord Sief. Is there anything else you wish?”

You wave a hand.

“No, thank you Loren, that will be all.”

How long has Loren been serving your family? She once told me that she's known me since I was six years old, though I don't remember when we first met personally. Twelve years serving my family, she must be well into her thirties by now. She looks good for it though, and I find my eyes drawn to her swaying hips as she leaves your room...

No, damn it, no! I am not doing this. I have important duties to attend to. Training to do. Spirits, sometimes I do yearn for simpler days before such base urges emerged.

I wash, run through my morning stretches and exercises and dress myself, routine as always.

I strap the Atanor family sword to my hip and step out into the hallway, servants bowing their heads and greeting my as I pass.

The cook has outdone himself as ever, though some days I wonder exactly what sort of ravening beast he thinks he's preparing such large meals for. I work my way through some bread, bacon and fruit. It's tempting to eat more, but I'd like to actually be able to move in my training later.

Rising from the table, I head to my father's chambers. I spot a servant girl loitering outside the door, looking lost, holding a bowl of water no doubt intended for my father to wash himself. She squeaks as she spots me, turning quickly and damn near spilling the water out across the floor.

“Lord Sief, I apologise. I was... I came to wake your lord father, but I'm afraid he's... indisposed.”

I roll my eyes, the servants certainly are fond of using that word to describe him. I wonder if he's been indisposed with this girl yet, she's only been here a week or two, a couple of years younger than me. Gwen was her name, I believe.

“No need, I'll wake him myself,” I smile, shooing her away from the lion's den as you take the bowl of water from her hands.

The girl bows deeply and scurries off as I shoulder open my father's bedroom door.

I've never been to a brothel, naturally, but if I had to describe what I would imagine a brothel to smell like, my father's room would be a pretty safe bet. It stinks of wine, sweat, and other less savory things. My father snores loudly, sprawled across his bed with a pair of women. No-one I recognize, probably girls from the local town. Spirits, one of them is younger than I am. One of his old hunting friends lies slumped in a chair, barely covered by a sheet, Ambrose. Ambrose's wife, even less covered, lies snoring by his feet on the carpet, the pair of them look like they've had half a jug of wine poured over them.

Lovely, another proud day for the Atanor family.

I walk over to the bed, picking my way over empty bottles, discarded clothes and unpleasant stains. I stand over my father, lifting the bowl over his face, then I flip it.

The result is satisfying, as my father awakens in a sputtering confused mess, arms flailing, one of the drunk girls sprawled over him tumbling off the bed at his sudden movement.

“Good morning, father, another busy night I see.”

“Sief, you lunatic, what are you doing to your poor old man,” he whines, pulling himself up off the bed, sitting on the side, coughing up some water.

“When I heard that my noble father hadn't awoken, even with guests downstairs to discuss important matters, I got worried. I thought to myself, perhaps he's sick, perhaps assassins came upon him in the night...”

“I was just entertaining some old friends,” he grumbles, shaking the water out of his hair.

“Indeed, I can see that now, Alphonse and his wife was it? Looks like you gave them quite the entertaining night, that's for sure.”

“That's right, and now I'd like to have some more wine and entertain some more. Lucky for me I have such a dutiful son to go see what these guests want.”

I grind my teeth. My father stands, sweeping his tangled hair back. For a split second I can almost see the man I used to admire in those strong features, then it's gone as she staggers bleary-eyed for a jug of wine on the side table, which I remove.

“They wish to see Lord Atanor, not his son. Are you going to see them, or am I going to have to go find a larger bowl of water?”

My father frowns, grasping for the wine jug, which I set down out of his reach.

“I remember when you used to treat your father with respect.”

“and I remember when I could take my eyes off my father for five seconds without fearing I'd catch him drinking or fucking something. Now, are you going to go meet these guests or not?”

“Fine, spirits, you're so bossy. I'll do,” he mutters, staggering towards the door.

“Father.”

“What, what now?”

“I'd rather our lands had an absent lord than one who meets guests without his trousers on, get dressed first.”

My father turns round, shrugging. “I meet a lot of people without my trousers on. I'm pretty renowned for it.”

“Charming, now get dressed and try to wear something that doesn't stink like a whorehouse.”

He grumbles, going to his wardrobe and rooting around for something to wear.

We don't have a complex, considering one's desires "base urges" is perfectly normal, since that's what they are, and especially since we're aiming to be an honorable knight, and not end up like our father, an alcoholic wreck.
Our mom probably died during the time skip, which sent dad down the path of depravity.

Warlord, is MC a virgin at this point?
I realize we're a young lord and probably spoiled and oculd get a lot of woman if we wanted, but I'd honestly rather play him as a gentleman/honorable/dignified guy, it'd fit with our actions so far, to not really try to pick up random girls and only those interested in us, and not just up and leave the morning after.

It's a shame, I hate to keep Sir Paxton waiting, but right now my father can barely be trusted to walk out the door without tripping, let alone meet guests.

I flag down a passing servant, having him gather up any remaining dregs of wine in the room and remove them.

Thankfully my father is too busy dealing with trying to dress himself to hear and complain.

“Ready?”

“Give me a minute,” he grumbles, struggling with his buttons.

Good, dressed and with his hair tidied, he almost looks like a respectable man.

“What's this all about anyway?”

I shrug, keeping pace alongside him, keeping him focused as his head swings in the direction of every ass to wiggle by. “Something about banditry, as I understand it.”

“So just send out the house guard, why do I have to deal with it?”

“Father, have you looked at the house guard recently? You cut their pay, remember? Half of them left, the rest look fit to follow any day now.”

“Didn't need that many, nothing ever happens here anyway.”

“You forgot about the little incident with that giant, Bonesnapper?”

(cont)
>>
>>37048132
My father's face darkens, and I wonder if I've said too much.

“No, I'll never forget that.”

The rest of the walk passes in silence, though far from a comfortable one. I push open the doors to the drawing room. The guests are two men, one short and fat, the other pencil-thin and drawn. I recognize the fat one as Thurstan, the mayor of Venser, the town at the southernmost edge of our lands. The thin man I don't recognize, but it seems like my father does, since he looks like he just swallowed a frog.

“Thurstan. Sir Tristram.”

A sir, so the man is a Golem Knight then. He doesn't look like much, physically, but I suppose it takes all sorts.

“Ah, the Lords Atanor younger and elder, how good of you to attend us so promptly,” the thin man drawls, fingers laced, back ramrod straight in the chair. He rather reminds me of an insect.

“Yeah, yeah, shove your shit, Tristram, I'm too drunk for this. What do you want?”

Well this is off to a good start.

“What I want, Lord Atanor, is for the men of the Imperial lands to feel safe to traverse their roads in safety. Especially at this... difficult time. I apologise if such concerns cut into your time for debauchery.”

Father opens his mouth, and I can already imagine the sort of response he's going to give. Should I step in and take over this conversation before it gets out of hand?

Meh.
What averaging got us was a roll almost guaranteed to be pretty average after getting a really shit roll and a somewhat good one.

Essentially, all averaging means is that it ultimately comes down to our boni, plans and choices more often than not and luck generally only tilts things slightly in one direction or another, with rolls good or bad enough to decide things on their own being pretty rare.

All in all, this seems like a good thing.

Of course there is a point to it.

If our choices and accumulated boni should make us reasonably likely to succeed barring extreme circumstances, a DC like that seems reasonable.

As far as I see it, giving us only a 61% successrate would have been a shit idea.

I clear my throat, all three men turning to look at you.

“Sir Tristram, insulting my father in his own house is hardly the hallmark of the wise knight I have heard you to be. I suggest all of us concentrate on the more urgent matters at hand, for the good of the citizens and the Empire.”

My father slumps back into a chair with a snort, as Sir Tristram observes me silently. I see Thurstan give me a grateful look as the heated atmosphere starts to calm.

“Do you have more information on these bandits? Perhaps up to date information to properly address the threat.”

Sir Tristram sniffs, sweeping imaginary dust from his shirt as he continues.

“Yes, well, it is true that I have no time to waste on petty arguments. Unfortunately what information we have is lacking, multiple traders, travellers and groups passing through your lands along the southern road have vanished close to Venser.”

“It's around the Belanir Forest, they just vanish before they come out the other side,” Thurstan explains, wringing his hands together.

“Some of the groups heading through had a lot of coachmen and guards travelling with them. Whoever these bandits are they're taking everything, carts, bodies and all.” Tristram continues.

“No-one saw anything?”

“No, even the charcoal gatherers and woodcutters have been vanishing around there.”

“It started about a week back. We can't have this happening now. We are expecting a delegate from the Iquani to pass through our lands soon, if anything were to happen to them, it would be catastrophic! The khan might even declare war!” Thurstan whimpers.

“Why not just bring in a ton of knights to escort the delegate?” your father asks, shrugging.

“No, the Iquani are still not overly fond of Golem Knights, too many may be seen as an act of aggression.”

“I had hoped, and High Lord Vere had hoped, that your two Golems would be enough to deal with this issue. I am to remain here and escort the Iquani delegate to the capital.”

Your father snorts. “So you came from the High Lord to tell us to do all your hard work for you?”

“Perhaps if you do not wish to use your Golem, Lord Atanor, it should be returned to the capital?” Tristram drawls, him and your father locking eyes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complex_(psychology)
>A complex is a core pattern of emotions, memories, perceptions, and wishes in the personal unconscious organized around a common theme, such as power or status (Schultz, D. & Schultz, S., 2009). Primarily a psychoanalytic term, it is found extensively in the works of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud.
>An example of a complex would be as follows: if you had a leg amputated when you were a child, this would influence your life in profound ways, even if you were wonderfully successful in overcoming the handicap. You might have many thoughts, emotions, memories, feelings of inferiority, triumphs, bitterness and determinations centering on that one aspect of your life. If these thoughts troubled you, Jung would say you had a complex about the leg (Dewey, 2007).

TL:DR
>complex = profound influence on your life

The fact that you admitted that there is an ESPECIALLY attached to our desire not to be like dad, and the fact that dad, our hero, became something so pathetic, and the way it seems like such a huge influence on us, means that it is a complex

“Can't you just tell the delegates to take another route?” my father asks.

“That would involve telling the Iquani that we lack control over our borderlands. That would be inadvisable in the current political climate.” Sir Tristram responds.

I can't see a way around this, and while Sir Tristram may not be the most pleasant in how he's asking, this is an issue with our lands, and it is our duty to see that it's dealt with. That said, my father can barely walk straight right now, so there's no way he'll be sobered up enough to pilot Raziel in time for the delegation.

“Perhaps I could pilot Raziel and go investigate?”

“Yeah, you do that,” my father mutters, rising from his chair.

“We're done here. Can't believe I got dragged out of bed for this.” he grumbles, stalking out of the room.

It can be easy to forget sometimes that my father is still the lord of these lands, and Raziel is still his golem, with the way he acts. I think I may have upset him. Damn, now I feel like a bit of an ass.

“Excellent, it is nice to know that someone in the Atanor family is living up to their old reputation,” Sir Tristram responds, rising from his chair in one stiff motion, extending a bony hand to me.

I pause, I know it's impolite, but this man really does rub me the wrong way. I've been trained enough in etiquette to suppress such gut reactions though, so I force my hand out to shake his.

The two of them excuse themselves quickly. Thurstan's thanks for the task I haven't even done yet getting a little on the emotional and awkward side.

While part of me feels bad for my father, the truth of the matter is that if he didn't act like such a fool, he wouldn't get treated like one. I'll speak with him about this another time, hopefully when he's sober.

Instead I make my way to see Sir Paxton, long overdue for my lessons. I find him sat on the grass of the grounds, his battered old Legion golem still and silent next to him, the chestplate open revealing the compartment within.

“A little late today, Sief,” he smirks, rising to his feet and brushing the grass off.

“I had to... assist my father with diplomatic issues. I actually needed to speak to you about that.”

Sir Paxton thankfully doesn't press me on the issue of my father. He never does, I think he still likes to remember the man my father used to be, like I do.

“What sort of diplomatic issues would affect a humble knight such as I?”

“It seems there are issues in the forest to the south, traders and such going missing. High Lord Vere seems to think it's serious enough to warrant Golem intervention.”

“...and you jumped at the chance, I take it, and now you want some last minute lessons from me?”

Sir Paxton sighs, rubbing a hand over his face.

“Sief, if I may speak candidly for a moment?”

I nod, though I rather wish I could be somewhere else right now.

“I'm retired from active service, I was allowed to keep my golem as a gift for my years fighting for the Empire. Neither Sir Tristram or High Lord Vere have the authority to overturn the Emperor's honorable discharge. I don't have to do a damn thing for either one of them. Tristram wanted both of us to go, and he wanted you to volunteer, or your father to volunteer you, because he knew that that way I'd have to come too.”

Well damn, now I feel like I just got played, which I suppose I did. So much for Sir Tristram appreciating me living up to my family reputation.

(cont)
>>
>>37049947
“That aside, I suppose if there is an issue with your lands, it is your family's duty to resolve them... Now then, enough of this, it's time for lessons, and I feel an urge to go especially hard on you today.”

I spend some time being put through my paces on dueling, archery, and some long distance running and such. Sir Paxton lived up to his promise to go hard on me, and I come out of it with a few more bruises than usual.

“Now then, if you're going to be taking Raziel off the grounds for the first time, we had best teach you a little more than basic movement today. Go fetch your golem and bring him here. Pick any weapons you wish, we'll practice with whatever you're most comfortable with.”

That said I make my way to the armory, trying not to show how I'm limping from a hard smack in the thigh with Sir Paxton's training sword.

I am always awed whenever I see Raziel, even after all this time. Smooth, polished stone, with steel and silver throughout, featureless, eyes dour and proud. Even if he can't pilot it any more, my father would never let Raziel gather dust, it's my mother's legacy.

The head of the Artificier Adepts greets me as I enter, a leathery old man named Vergil.

“Good morning Lord Sief. Is there something you require?”

Dunno, couple more hours. I'd like to get you through your first golem fight before I turn in.
>>
“Virgil, I'm going to be taking Raziel out soon. Could you run me through his functions once more.”

Virgil nods, leading you over to where Raziel stands unwavering.

“Well my lord, as far as golems go, Raziel is, at his basic level, rather standard. Basic humanoid body type, primary and secondary weapon slots located across the back. Equipment slots here on the hip and the lower back. We have a barrier ward and an armor ward in place, which means Raziel has enough mana to power one more ward, or the Gem Hand Cannon, if you'd prefer.”

I nod, I've heard all this before, but it never hurts to get a refresher.

“Raziel is fast and efficient, though sometimes it feels like there's a little too much mana drain on him. He is a somewhat outdated design, but should still stand up to more modern golems well enough.”

I run a hand over the smooth stone of the shin, slightly warm to the touch from the mana flowing through it.

“Have you had any luck figuring out the other functions?”

Virgil sucks air through his teeth.

“I am afraid not, Lord Sief, the Lady Sofia was truly a gifted artificier, and... ah... her notes are a little beyond my abilities to unravel. Perhaps if you took Raziel to the capital, or to the Foundry Isles, someone could help you to understand what modifications Lady Sofia made to the Golem, but I cannot help you.”

I imagine he's being a little polite there, while there's no denying that my mother was an incredible artificier, she also had some of the most terrible organizational skills and handwriting I've ever seen. I've looked at her notes myself, and never mind understanding them, I couldn't even read most of them. I remember peering at her work desk as a child, listening to her laugh as I tried to read out all the complex magitech names in her schematics.

I sigh, thinking about her always puts me in a low mood. Shake it off, Sief, focus on your mission.

“I believe you wished some weapons equipped?”

Of course, time to get on with it.

“I'll take the War Sword and the Gatebreaker, and the Shield too.”

“As you say, Lord Sief,” Virgil bows.

I open up Raziel's chestplate as I wait for the artificiers to wheel out the weapons, touching the Atanor family sword to it, the key to the Golem. I climb up into the cockpit, it feels warm, comfortable, the soothing hum of mana flowing through the enchanted stone and silver veins of my family's pride, my mother's legacy.

“The weapons are ready, Lord Sief,” Virgil calls from the ground, waving up at me as his assistants wheel the great sword, mace and shield out on trolleys.

“Thank you, Virgil,” I call down as the chestplate closes, sealing me within.

The feel of the mana surging through the enclosed space makes my whole body tingle. I put my hands to the sides, resting them on the control stones, feeling Raziel's vision overlay my own. I look down at my hand, stone and steel, curling and extending each of the fingers in turn. I feel heavy, solid, but still strangely light. I reach for the sword, clipping it into place on my back, the mace after. I lift the shield, which locks into place against my left forearm as the mana of the golem binds it.

I feel that voice, that strange yet familiar presence in my mind. It reminds me a little of my father, or rather, of the man my father was. I push down a wave of nostalgia, this is happening too much to me today.

Nodding to Virgil, I step out of the armory, every step solid and sure.

I return to Sir Paxton in a fraction of the time, who looks up at me.

“You've sure got the hang of walking it around. Now let's see how well you've got the hang of fighting in it.”

Sir Paxton clambers nimbly up into his Legion Golem despite his age. Compared to the noble look of Raziel, Legions are old and obsolete things, rough stone and iron, built for function, to support low born knights rather than the nobility. Legions haven't even been used by the army in fifteen years, they have long since build better, quicker models. Still, looking at Sir Paxton's chipped, dented old golem, worn down by a hundred battles, I know I would be a fool to think I could match him in a fight.

“You hear me?”

A voice flows into the cockpit, into my mind.

“Yes.”

“Good, sometimes the vocal enchantments on these old Legions act up. Now then, I see you picked a pair of close combat weapons. If you plan to go out into combat with those, I'd recommend going out with the support of a ranged golem or something similar, or carrying plenty of aggressive mana stones in your equipment. Draw your weapon, and let's try a little sparring.”

Sir Paxton's Legion is armed with a War Axe and Shield, you can see a Ballista and the spare axes across his back.

What do you wish to start with?
>War Sword
>Gatebreaker

and how do you wish to proceed?
>Write-in plan of attack.

>Gatebreaker
Mace negates shield. Close quickly he has range. once in melee use you longer reach and heavier weapon to keep him jostled and off his game.
>>
>>37051400
>Gatebreaker

We should get in close as quickly as possible, our Gatebreaker should be more effective against him because he has a shield and we can use it to bust through armor. To close the gap we keep our shield up and rush him. Until then focus on mitigating damage.
>>
>>37051400
Draw Gatebreaker.

Attempt to disable his shield first, purposefully targeting it, aand once it's crippled, draw the war sword.

Once you've drawn your blade, feint right with you blade, coming left with your shield. After that, follow up with a sharp elbow to his head. If he's not ready to submit then, then reform your stance and do your best to guard.

How big is our kingdom?
>>
>>37051942
Your family owns a medium sized territory on the northeastern edge of the Empire, under the rule of High Lord Vere who reports directly to the Emperor on the goings on in the east.

It's moderately large, large enough to support two well-sized towns and a few villages, but a lot of it is also undeveloped forest land with an unfortunate habit of attracting unpleasant creatures from the great plains to the east or the mountains to the north.
>>
>>37051796
Sounds like a poisoning. Dad or Mom have political enemies? Disgruntled employees? Jilted ex-lovers?
>>
>>37052022
You don't know anything about their love lives, since you have been very firm with your dad about not telling you about it when he starts drunken ramblings about how great your mom was in the sack.

As for political enemies and disgruntled employees. Not that you know of, your father certainly had rivals, as any noble would, and you've no doubt he made enemies when he was fought in the wars with the Garou Tribal Alliance, but none that you can imagine gaining anything from a poisoning.

You know less about your mother's history, you know she came from the Foundry Isles, and she may have had rivals or enemies amongst the Artificier Houses there, you understand that competition can get a bit fierce. If she did though, she never mentioned it, since she was rather more interested in golemcraft than in dealing with politics.
>>
>>37052009
You should change the die system. Either the best of 1d100, or averaging the best set of 3d100.

Other than the dice fuckery, I like how this quest is playing out. How exactly do Golems work, mechanically speaking?
>>
>>37052119
Yeah, I'm going to give the dice rolling system some more thought for next time.

Golems are built piece by piece by teams of artificiers and magi, each piece specially enchanted and carved with binding and animating runes and script. The pieces are bonded together with metal thread and strengthened with magic around a central cockpit in the chest, and mana core, which is cut from a particularly large and pure gemstone.

Crafting Golems is slowly becoming more streamlined and easier, and the magitech involved is always advancing. The Foundry Isles and the Imperial College of Golemcraft being the two foremost research and development centers for Golems.

Hmm, that does sound decent. I will look into it.

I will point out, though it didn't come into play yet, that Sief's Willpower stat gives him 2 points of Spirit, which can be used to override failures, upgrade successes and a couple of other things.

It's basically your hotblooded mecha pilot pool.
