"So am I healthy or what?" you ask as you lie face down; arms crossed as the blue light scans your body back and forth.

"Iee'd tell you if you would stoop squeerming," Doctor Michel says as she works on her console, typing away buttons.

The medbay of the SS Say My Name isn't too cramped or even that uncomfortable, but you always hated seeing doctors.

"Hmm...Iee'm seeing evidence of severaal repeaated past traumaas...gunshot, bladed weapon, other injuries...," she says absently.

"Comes with being a soldier Doc; we get beat up on quite a bit," you quip, though she's also probably seeing childhood injuries from back at Omega. Not her business though.

"Your nervous system is....," she says, pausing and blinking, "Oh my. This can't be right. I'm reading over a fourty-two percent composition of eezo!"

You smile. "No, you're spot on. If you cracked me open my nervous system would probably glow blue Doc. My in-utero exposure was a bit more heavy then most."

"Lord, how did that happen?" she wonders.

"My ma mined eezo on Omega. She didn't realize she was pregnant with me for almost a month and a half so she kept working the mines there, getting more and more eezo exposure each day," you explain. "I had a ton of Heath problems as a kid because of it but this salarian Doctor onboard the station who showed up when I was a teenager helped fix me up. By then I was already showing heavy biotic potential, almost as much as someone with an L1 implant already inside their heads."

"That seems...unusual. From what 'eye 'ave 'eard about Omega such generosity is uncommon? Were youur parents wealthy?"

"My mom got paid decent; you can't get anyone to mine eezo otherwise, but we didn't have serious money. Last saw my dad when I was fourteen. He sent money back everyonce in awhile, but that's it. No, he just fixed me up for free at his clinic. Never could figure out Doctor Solus's whole deal, but when the Blue Suns came to collect protection money he just popped them right there in the street," you explain, smiling fondly at the memory.

"Oh my!" Michel says in shock.

"Yeah, he was probably some kind of combat medic before he got to Omega," you note.

"I don't recognize your implant model?" she said, squinting her eyes at the screen.

"It's an L4r-X. Grissom Academy variant of L4 close combat amp. It spikes maybe 20-30% higher with more efficiency. My nerves are so saturated with eezo that I actually need the higher-performance amp to properly manipulate mass effect fields otherwise I just blow shit up whenever I try."

"Oh dear. Was that stressful as a child?"

"Are you kidding me? I was the little sick kid for most of my childhood then when I went to the Academy I could blow shit up with my mind. How badass is that shit?" you say, laughing. "So can I put my shirt on now?"

"You deedn't 'ave to take eet off in za first place," she says with a smile.

"What?! Why didn't you SAY so?" you say as you feel like an idiot, putting on your blue ERCS uniform.

"I was enjoying 'ze view," she explains, still smiling before going back to work.

You head back out to crew commons where the mess is and pick up an energy drink and a ration bar (Apple-cinnamon flavored) only to find Aeson finishing up some dextro-amino based protein meal. Like your current snack, he's eating a high calory one.

"Exercise?" you ask knowingly.

"Yup. Haven't had enough calories today, figured I'd put some in," he admits.

Like you Aeson is a biotic, and thus exercising consists of both physical and biotic work to keep yourself in shape; using biotics takes up a LOT of calories, so you eat a lot of high energy food.
You've never really been at risk of being fat thanks to the energy requirements of your biotics, though when you were younger malnourishment was definitely a risk.

"Been dodging Captain Garm?" you ask.

"I can't figure out why company would pick a KROGAN of all things to be Captain," he admits, shaking his head as you both head for the elevator.

"Five centuries of combat experience is kind of a big deal I guess," you say as you press the down button. You can't even fathom what living THAT long must be like, let alone killing people the whole time.

"But who is he? A Battlemaster? Some Warlord who left Tuchanka? I can't access his records file on the company extranet site!" he says.

"He's got five centuries of combat experience," you say with a nod. "Not a huge problem is it?"

"No, I'll be good. 'One must live in the moment without thought to the next' and all that," he says with a nod.

"Oh, you read that datafile I lent you?" you say with a smile as the elevator you get into moves down.

"Yes. The Hagakure it was called? Fascibating stuff. I didn't know Earth had warrior philosophies," he admits.

"I have the Book of Five Rings too. Same country. Similar subject matter. There's a lot in there about tactics too," you inform him.

"I'll have to check that one out as well," he says, smiling as you step out of the elevator and see the pilot, Kei Nagase working out.

"Nagase," you greet with a nod as you set up the weights.
"Logan," she says with a nod back.

Aeson goes first, and you spot for him as he starts at 45 kilos. Turian muscles are weird; Aeson doesn't look much different from any other turian, but you're guessing he's in at least as good shape as you are. You guess all turians have almost no visible muscle, just lean muscle.

"You know there's a ton of turians that take up Confucianism?" he asks as he begins his set.

"No way. Really?" you say in surprise as you lift what must look like heavy iron blocks and set them up while watching him.

"Yeah. The whole emphasis on dutifully serving the state and knowing your proper place kinda resonates with a lot of my people," he explains.

"But not you?"

"Not so much. It's a nice concept, but I was born a biotic so I don't really fit in. Cabals have separate cell-based organizational structure, each self-contained. Makes is outcasts I guess."

"Wait, I thought I heard Cabals were special operations units?" you say as you begin concentrating, a dark energy field manifesting around you.

The seven stacked metal blocks begin to levitate into the air as you affect their mass.

"Yeah, we're trained in infiltration, sabotage, independent operations, technical proficiency, pretty similar to your human N7 training. Less emphasis on the physical fitness and readiness regime though, you humans get pretty intense about that," he notes.

"Turians are already a bit stronger then humans normally thanks to biology differences, so we gotta work harder at it," you point out. "So what's the problem then?"

The blocks begin to re-assemble and arrange themselves in new patterns in mid-air, like a Rubix Cube that you're constantly taking apart and putting back together.

"Just that; turians aren't supposed to be 'special', see? We serve the Hierarchy or the Citadel, work hard, find our spots in the universe. Even though Cabals are tactically useful turian combat doctrine reflects uniformity of skill and flexibility, so that any soldier can attempt to do another's job if he falls. We move and fight as one, basically. Biotics don't fit in there, and since fitting in is what being turian is all about (especially in military work) there's kind of a stigma to it. That's why I liked that Hagakure thing; it has philosiphies that apply to serving a greater good even when the greater good doesn't particularly want or appreciate your service."

"Hm. On ancient Earth they had something like that. Ronin, a kind of outcast warrior group. One wrote the book I mentioned to you earlier."

"Go Rin No Sho," Nagase says, finishing her set and sitting up, wiping her face off with a towel. "The Book of Five Rings. You've read Musashi?"

You blink in surprise. It's the most she's ever said to you all at once.
"Yeah, actually. Why?"

"He's one of the most famous warriors my country ever produced. Surprised to find a colonist reading him."

"It's the martial arts stuff, especially the fencing," you admit. "I had a hand to hand combat instructor from...Japan I think he said it was back in N-School. Taught me unarmed stuff, how to incorporate biotics with CQB strategies, how to you use a sword, all that stuff."

Ryoichi-sensei was probably the biggest badass you've ever met. He was just some tiny little unaugmented human in his 40's or so, but his mastery of hand to hand combat was better then any other instructor in N-School.

"What did he teach?" she asks curious.

"Not sure. Combat techniques? He didn't give a name for it or anything, just focused on effective a ways of incapacitating or killing the enemy."

"Hm. Sounds like kobudo. I wonder where they found someone like that? The stereotype is living in the mountains," she says with a smile.

>>

No, but kobudo ("Old Martial Way") are pre-modern Japanese combat training methods, martial arts, and combat philosiphies before they had things like Karate or Jiujitsu.

Stereotypically they're taught only in small families who keep the stuff in-house who live in secluded rural parts of Japan (which are mountainous and heavily forested).

The joke is that she was claiming the guy was basically a ninja, which in fact wasn't too far off from the truth.

"You do martial arts?" you ask, interested.

"Mmmhmm. Kyujutsu and Kenjutsu and Sojutsu, all since high school, and some Aikido. I guess I was kind of active for a high school girl, a tomboy."

"Well if being a tomboy gets you starship piloting certification then clearly it worked out for you," you compliment with a nod.

She smiles again. She is REALLY pretty when she smiles, which is surprising because she looks so serious so much of the rest of the time.

"I just wanted to fly. Earth is getting too small for humanity and we can't stay there forever," she notes as Aeson finishes his set and you put down the biotic weights, your dark energy field dissipating.

"Is that hard to do?" she asks at the biotic blocks.

Aeson is the one who answers.
"Kinda. Once you get the hang of it it's a lot easier, but early on figuring out the mnemonics and doing fine control is really tricky. It's why a lot of less experienced biotics just stick to moving things back and forth and hauling them around in fights."

You nod in agreement. "I had a TON of trouble doing anything more complicated then smashing things originally. Holding objects felt like trying to grab onto hollow plastic toys with big heavy metal gloves on; everything was so easy to break."

"So your service record says you do combat biotics and CQB specialization, but what's your speciality Favius?" she wonders, quirking her head to one side.

"I'm a close-quarters expert like him, but I have Cabal training. Infiltration, sabotage, technical expertise, and sniping are my specialties. My biotics aren't as powerful as Logan's are but I can still do some tricks with them he can't. Logan's more proficient with TK and Kinetic Fields, I'm better with Spatial Distortion though."

She's about to say something but an alarm klaxon rings out interrupting her, followed by Captain Garm's voice.

"All crew report to combat stations," he says simply.

You all three get up and hustle to the CIC and cockpit.

The three of you head to the elevator and arrive at the CIC, where Nagase runs past and heads towards the cockpit to take up her primary spot.

"Ah, there you are Logan. It seems after we left FTL and arrived in-system we recieved a distress call," Garm says, the hologram of the system showing the location with a pair of red arrows around it. "A fairly generic vessel with what appears to be an armed pirate frigate attached to it."

"Orders Sir?" you asks, standing straight.

"I grow bored of travel. We will engage them out of goodwill and the free advertisement this gives our newly created Special Response Unit for saving them in an appropriately heroic fashion."

You idly which between "boredom" and "advertisement" provides the primary motivator for this action on his part.

"The pirate ship is too close to the heavy cargo freighter to allow us to fire upon them. We will instead take a boarding party and engage directly while taking care to avoid harming hostages. You and Favius will infiltrate via the exterior hull access points while the raiders engage the boarding party. Your objective is to free the hostages while they are distracted and gain control of the ship's bridge, which will allow us to control the engagement. Questions?"

>WDYS?

>You may write-in any tactical queries you have.
>>

how bloody do you want the op to be sir?
>>
>>37048092
I can already see what sort of atmosphere these threads will have, and I like it.
>>
>>37048108
"Size/class of the ship? Do we know the manufacturer, do we have plans of it? What about the cargo space? Where are the hostages held? Could we take them down with hacking instead of a risky firefight that could get everyone killed? Have we tried outright bribery with a second-in-command?"
>>
>>37048119
Well he wants the hostages safe so I assume whatever it takes to do that.
>>
>>37048108
What points of entry are there? Like we need to know if we can outflank the pirates without going through the hostages. maybe Cut them off from the hostages. Otherwise do we got any cyber warfare options?
>>
>>37048108

I wonder how many pirates we can expect in their boarding party. Also do transponders on the freighter check out? It could be a trap.
Anything else helpful on the sensors? There may be more pirates in waiting...
>>
>>37048108
"Are we cleared to use HIBV?"
>>
>>37048108

"What class of ship, Sir?" you ask and he brings up a hologram of it.

"A 600 meter bulk freighter. It's large, unsophisticated, with most of it's size devoted to carrying large cargo containers carrying goods. Posdibly independently owned, but equally likely to belong to a major company. The registry is 'SS Anubis', which we don't have records of, which perhaps isn't surprising as we don't keep track of every bulk freighter in the galaxy. The ship is registered out of Eden Prime according to it's IFF transponder, a human colony in the Attican Traverse I believe. Despite it's size it's crew will be minimal; most of it is empty space thus it doesn't require a complex crew. The exact number varies. The pirate vessel is small enough that there pirate frigate could easily overpower them, especially seeing as the freighter has no weapons."

"A ship that size this close to the Terminus has no defensive armament?" you ask in surorise.

"The Anubis appears to have drive problems, which likely kept them from moving long enough for pirates waiting near the relay to ambush them. There are several points of entry you can use; external maintence hatches for EVA work."

"Technical solutions?" Aeson inquires.

"Likely none. Accessing a ship's onboard network externally is difficult enough as it is at this distance, and even then requires a much more sophisticated computer then the Say My Name has."

"So we're going in blind basically?" Aeson says, somewhat glumly.

"Exactly. The marines detachment we have aboard the ship will get their attention direction and dock with the Hammerhead shuttle. They'll act as a forward distraction while the pair of you make you way to the bridge. Without full Intel on their numbers and weapons the logical course of action is to force them into a position which we already have a plan for rather then wait for them to make the first move."
>>
>>37048108
Any chance we could get someone to plant a remote charge on the pirate's ship while we're having all the fun?

I'd like to give them a parting "fuck you"
>>
>>37048555
you go in through the front door and get there attention and we head in though the back and cripple them, got it.
>>
>>37048555

You breathe in before asking your next question.

"Terms of surrender for the enemy Sir?"

"None of course. There is no law out here, no authority in this region we must defer to. Arresting them is a pointless exercise. Standing orders are to kill all hostiles, and execute those who surrender. If one of them has information you deep tactically valuable or perhaps useful at a later date, then cripple his ability to flee and we will retrieve him later. What is that human expression? 'Those who live by the sword, die by the sword'?"

To your surprise Aeson nods; he's perfectly okay with killing all the pirates to the last man. Turian military doctrine doesn't really grasp the concept of "let them retreat once defeated". They always fight to completely cripple all opposition of their ability to fight.

"We'll suit up Sir. You just give us the order when to go," you say with a nod then head down into the hold.

"Next to no intel, possible hostages, unknown number of hostiles....this is gonna be hairy," Aeson says as the elevator doors close and you head down to the cargo hold to suit up.

"Sounds like a fairly standard special forces op to me Aeson. No intel, no rules, and improvisation," you say with a smile.

It's true that stuff like this can get REALLY nasty, but special operations troopers are weaned on operations like this one. You both have the training, you're just out of practice.

You sheathe your sword behind your back and put on your helmet after strapping on your armor. The stripes are ERCS Blue and not red, but it still feels the same as you boot up it's HUD and synch with the rest of the team.

You get inside the Hammerhead with the others, awaiting your launching point.

"Okay," you say, realizing you're effectively the highest ranking man here. "I know we're newly put together, but that doesn't matter; we're all professionals. We've all been trained, and this job is as basic as it gets, a simple boarding action. Don't get too aggressive with your boarding action, remember, and don't try to be a hero about it. Your job is to put up resistance and keep them distracted while me and Aeson do the crazy shit. Just keep shooting, watch your corners, and watch your backs. Keep it basic, keep it safe. If things get too hairy, don't be afraid to fall back to the Hammerhead; the plan doesn't even require you to meet up with us, just to make it look like you're the main assault force. Read me?"

They all nod, a mix of humans and turians as the Hammerhead's hatch closes and you feel it begin to take off as the ship's bay doors open.

The Hammerhead moves out into open space, and as you see the hatch open up, the light of the stars and the nearby blue gas giant fills the darkened shuttle hold.

You take a breath. Then you jump.
