You are ROWAN the crown prince of the kingdom of Atea. Currently on a self-imposed mission to clear out a group of bandits that have been attacking cities in your kingdom. Aiding you are your childhood friends and a group of your father’s house guard.

Having successfully infiltrated the bandit stronghold you found the prison where the bandits would “recondition” people they captured to bolster their ranks via starvation, neglect, and brainwashing. You were almost discovered but hid your group inside the prison room and sprung an ambush on the investigating bandits. You wiped out over half their number and drove them off, with good luck too as one of your number, Ornholt the cavalier, had taken a heavy wound during the combat.

Tending to your friends you realized that near the end of the combat your guard, the Paladin Mark, had released the prisoners from their cells.

One such prisoner steps forward, a female who wears strange dress. It seems that she must have been captured recently as for the most part she still shows signs of good health and she isn’t as dirty or tired looking as the other prisoners.

“I must thank you for the rescue. Who knows what would have happened to us if no one had come. My name is Yuzuki and I am in your debt. Now if you will allow me, I wish to accompany you in gutting that worm Jidal for everything he has put me, and the others, through.” She says her voice sweet, but seething with a guided hatred.

What do you do?
>Allow Yuzuki to assist you.

“We will be happy to have your assistance in taking down the leader of these bandits. But are you sure you are up to the task? These bandits are no push overs and we barely held off their patrol.” You say to the foreign girl as you look over at Ornholt whose wound is still sealing shut as he sits on the ground chugging his second vulnerary.

“I can assure you that I am more than capable of handling myself in a fight.” She says strutting over to the corpse of a fallen bandit and taking his iron sword. She looks over the blade feeling its heft in her hand before striking at the air. “I may not look like it but I am a skilled swordswoman and was only captured due to the bandits’ sheer numbers.”

>Yuzuki the wandering Myrmidon has joined your party.

You turn towards the crowd of former prisoners assembled before you. They range from old to young of both genders however there are very few that are within the young adult age range, most likely they converted over to the side of the bandits or had their wills broken due to “other” circumstances.

“Listen up, we are here to save you, but for your own safety please remain here until we have taken care of the bandit problem. This is for your own safety, those of you healthy enough to wield a blade take one from the defeated bandits and guard the others. We will return for you when the coast is clear.”

You glance over towards your party, everyone seems to be in relatively good health and seem ready to take on the rest of whatever hardships you may face.

You turn back to Yuzuki, the girl is still glancing over the blade she picked up and is currently comparing it to another blade on the ground. She lifts it up, feels its weight, and then discards it sticking with her original choice.

“So, how did you come by becoming the prisoner to these bandits then?” you ask as nonchalantly as possible.

“I told you already, I was overwhelmed when they attacked me. There were too many to fight off.” She replies as she practices a few strokes with the sword in hand like she is cutting down a foe in front of her.

“Let me rephrase that. How did you come by being captured in the first place? You don’t look like you are from around these parts, and you dress… differently. How is it that you came about being here to be captured?” you clarify.

Yuzuki stops her practicing and looks intently at you as if trying to figure out some secret that is hidden in your question before shrugging.

“I come from a distant land, one that is not so different than this, the people here and there are similar but our customs are different. I left in search of my father, he left my family when I was very little in search of a divine blade. One of legend said to strike with the force of the sun and turn all it is wielded against to ash. I have searched far and wide for him to no avail but my most recent endeavors stated that he was somewhere on this continent possibly here in Atea. I was travelling along with a merchant group when we were ambushed by the bandits.” She explains.

So they were attacked just like you were, it makes sense that had you had to face them without Mark you would no doubt be dead right now and Agrias and Felecia probably prisoners just like Yuzuki was. Or perhaps they would have captured you for a King’s ransom.

1/2
>>
>>37029466

“The merchants fought bravely but in the end they were cut down. I fought for as long as I could but eventually I too was defeated, they knocked me out and the next thing I knew I was chained to the wall here. Jidal and his brother would visit often to “recruit” from the prisoners that couldn’t maintain their will. I never relented.” She finishes her tale, a look in her eyes says she doesn’t want to say any more.

“Thank you for sharing, Yuzuki.” You say allowing her to get back to her practicing.

You decide that enough waiting is enough waiting and it’s time to head back into the main fortress and put an end to this madness with bandits. You gather up everyone including Yuzuki near the entrance to the prison.

“Alright let’s get going before the bandits have a chance to regroup and set up barricades and traps. We should still have some time to cut the head off the snake before the body coils around us.” You tell the group and pretty much everyone nods in agreement. “So Yuzuki, any thoughts on how to best fight these guys?”

“The bandits are strong in numbers but individually they are weak and their morale relies on them having faith in their boss, if we can kill Jidal their organization will crumble without a doubt.” She says matter-of-factly.

“Let’s get a move on then time is of the essence.” You say swinging open the doors to the prison as you and the rest of your party storm out back into the fortress corridors.

You continue on for someways before coming to an intersection, this is the one you crossed earlier while following the captured bandit’s instructions.

1/2
>>
>>37030137
“Ok, it seems that the instructions we were told just lead us to the prison. So we still have no clue where the main hall is.” You say aloud.

“We don’t even know if he is still there, if I knew that a group was trying to kill me I’d be in the last place they would expect to find me.” Felecia pipes up.

“Or he may be looking to bring the fight to us he could be scouring the fortress at this very moment.” Mark adds.

“I might know where he is.” Yuzuki says everyone in the group turning to look at her. “But either way is likely a longshot. Jidal spends most of his time in one of two places, the main hall or his private quarters. I know how to get to both but if he is out looking for us then we could be wasting all our energy running around needlessly.”

Well what do you do?

“Take us to his personal quarters. If he is as much a worm as you say he is he might just be hiding there. If he is a warrior we may catch him changing into his armor and if he isn’t there we can always just wreck the place.” You state.

Yuzuki grimaces a little. “Ok, it seems like that’s what you’ve set your mind on. Follow me.” She takes the lead as you round the first right, you continue down the hallway and take a left this time going the opposite way of which you entered the fortress. Your party is picking up the pace as you pass door after door of the fortress.

“Pardon my asking but how do you know-“ Arc starts to ask Yuzuki before being cut off with a shush and a glare.

Yuzuki motions for your group to stop at the next crossing, you are confused for a moment before you hear the sounds of many footsteps echoing through the halls. All of you hide in the archway as a huge group of bandits goes rushing past. It seems almost impossible as you are not only eight people but also three horses but the bandits of which there has to be at least twenty some odd all pass by rushing to what you assume is the way to the main hall.

When the last bandit trods on by you begin moving again. You take another left down a hall and then a right and are met with a very large wooden door.

“This is it Jidal’s private quarters, but I must warn you Jidal is a despicable man and although I have never faced him in combat I heard whispers from his men that he is a formidable combat master. Are you ready?” Yuzuki asks.

Yeah you are ready! This mother fucker is going down! You nod to Arc and you catch a knowing glint in his eye, the time has come.

“Let’s do this!” you shout running forward Arc assists you in a full on tackle as you slam into the door. You close your eyes as wood splinters upon your impact. The hinges creak, buckle, and snap as the door flies off its hinges and onto the floor. It lands with a loud *thud*.

“Surprise mother fucker!” you shout out as you enter the room fully prepared to face the bandit boss here and now. You hear several audible gasps and girlish screaming? You open your eyes and… oh goddess.

You look upon the room before you and you immediately realize just how despicable of a man Jidal is the room is a gaudy red with pillows everywhere, a fancy rug, fine tapestry, and a candelabra hanging from the ceiling, this is a level of extravagance that few nobles of Atea dare display, but for a lowly bandit barely scarping by? You would probably wonder who he robbed to acquire all these luxuries but your mind is currently elsewhere for his horrible taste in décor is not what is catching your attention.

Girls, females, as far as the eye can see some screaming and attempting to flee, others passed out either drugged or asleep, others crying in panic, some lie on the ground with lust washed across their face, others blankly stare into the distance as if gazing for a thousand yards. All of them in various forms of undress, some with exposed bosoms, some lacking pants, some completely naked. This is no doubt Jidal’s “private” quarters and without a doubt where he holds all of the girls that are broken by that prison you just liberated.

Unfortunately, Jidal is nowhere to be seen that must mean-

“Hey! What’s with all the ruckus!?” You hear an arrogant and nasally voice come from the far back of the room.

“I thought I told you schleps to never enter my room unannounced. Have you taken care of the intruders yet or do I need to-“ A short balding man wearing nothing but his underwear comes out from behind a curtain in the back of the chamber. His face turns from anger to panic as he sees you and your party standing in his door way.

“Inconceivable” he mutters before turning around and starting to make a break for it.

“Jidal! I’ve come for your head you worm!” Yuzuki shouts as she charges into the room after Jidal girls clambering out of her way as she makes a beeline for the short man.

Jidal disappears into the curtains in the back room and is quickly followed by Yuzuki who is waving her sword around in a fury.

You have no time to question what the hell is going on here! People’s lives are on the line! You quickly rush in after Yuzuki, barreling past the half-naked women and gaudy furniture and towards the curtains in the back of the room. You brush them aside only to be confronted with. More colored curtains. You keep brushing curtains aside seeming to get lost in the endless red tide that surrounds you. Finally after brushing past curtains for what seems like an eternity you break into a small room with a gaudy bed in the center.

“Haha! I knew I couldn’t compete with the lot of you physically, but you are no match for my brains.” You hear a nasally voice say as Jidal appears from the curtains knife to the throat of Yuzuki.

“Sorry, Rowan, he ambushed me in the curtains.” Yuzuki lets out weakly the knife less than inches away from her neck.

“I know who you are, some big shot hero type who thinks he can just come in here and ruin my operation, but AHA! The way you hold yourself, the crest on your shoulder pad, you are nobility. And if the hair color fits, and it does you must be of direct royal blood. Meaning one of three things: One, you are the bastard son of either the Lord-Emperor or his brother. Two, you dye your hair to make yourself look royal but are infact a sham. Or Three, and most likely of all, you are Prince Rowan come to make his Papa proud and rid the land of another two bit bandit. But you didn’t count on facing me! You’ve made one of the classic blunders- The most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Atea" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go in against a Sunganian when death is on the line!””

“Wait!” You yell out. “I challenge you, to a battle of wits!”

“You what? Can’t you see I hold all the cards here boy? I have nothing to gain from facing you.” Jidal says as he presses the knife closer to Yuzuki’s neck. “Now you’re going to let me make my escape or the girl dies and I make my escape anyways.”

“Oh and here I thought that I was “No match for your superior intellect” and that one should "Never go in against a Sunganian when death is on the line!” but apparently you are either an imbecile or you lie about your nationality.”

“What!? How dare insult the great Jidal! Fine, discard your weapons and we shall have this battle of wits!” Jidal says.

“Gladly,” you say tossing your spears to the floor and kicking them out of sight.

“Haha, a man of your word. Fine, I accepted the challenge and I can’t have anyone badmouthing me if I flee now. I’ll have no respect from my men.” Jidal quickly pulls the knife away from Yuzuki’s neck and shoves her back into the curtain forest. He then slams the knife into one of the pillows on the floor. “Luckily or unluckily for you I am always prepared. Behold!” he says pulling out a box from under the bed.

>>
>>37033528
Jidal opens the box and inside are two wine glasses, a bottle of wine, and various vials and powders. He pulls out one vial, along with the two wine glasses, and the wine, and places them on the bed.

“In this vial is Bael venom, it’s so potent that a single drop can paralyze a man in moments. A vial like this can kill a dozen. The funny thing about Bael venom is that it is nearly undetectable in alcohol. So I propose this challenge I will pour two glasses of wine, you will then pour the Bael venom in one of the glasses, I will then chose a cup and we will both drink. Do we have an agreement?”

“Agreed” you state with the full knowledge that your very life is on the line.

“Good” Jidal states as he pours the wine and then hands the cups to you. You turn around so that Jidal cannot see which cup you are pouring the venom into.

You remember something, the vials from the man in the market. The antidotes and Panacea, they should counteract the Bael venom, you decide to pour the poison into both glasses hiding your panacea and antidote up your sleeve for when you go to drink. After filling each cup with poison you turn around and place them down, one in front of you and the other in front of Jidal

“All right. Where is the poison? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both drink, and find out who is right... and who is dead.” You state placing the wine glasses back onto the bed.

“But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.” Jidal begins rambling.

“You've made your decision then?” you ask the short man as he finishes his miniature speech.

“Hardly, for as you know Bael are indigenous to Icucus and what is Icucus filled with? Neutral people, who would never lie to either an Atean, such as you. Or a Sunganian such as me. So that means that you may be following their example and place the poison in front of me. Or you could be going against their code if only for the fact that they willingly dealt with a criminal like me and in doing so decided to put the poison in front of you.” Jidal continues.

“You're just stalling now.” You reply.

“You'd like to think that, wouldn't you? You've beaten my giant of a brother, which means you're exceptionally strong, so you could've put the poison in your own goblet, trusting on your strength to save you, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you are also a noble and nobles study, and in studying you must have learned that man is mortal, so you would have put the poison as far from yourself as possible, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.” Jidal continues.

“You're trying to trick me into giving away something. It won't work.” You state flatly getting very tired of this.

“IT HAS WORKED! YOU'VE GIVEN EVERYTHING AWAY! I KNOW WHERE THE POISON IS!” Jidal shouts extatically, clearly the small man has lost his mind.

“Then make your choice.” You say with a sigh hoping this will just be over and done with.

“I will, and I choose - What in the world can that be?” Jidal says pointing behind you

“What? Where? I don't see anything.” You say as you quickly turn to look but nothing has changed behind you.

“Well, I- I could have sworn I saw something. No matter. First, let's drink. Me from my glass, and you from yours.” Jidal says as you both raise your glasses to your mouth.

You both drink deep but as you do so you pour the Antidote and Panacea you have hidden up your sleeve down the hatch with the poisoned wine.

“You guessed wrong.” You say with a smile on your face.

“You only think I guessed wrong! That's what's so funny! I switched glasses when your back was turned! Ha ha! You fool! You really fell victim to one of the classic blunders "Never go in against a Sunganian when death is on the line"! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha...” Jidal starts before dropping over deader than a doorknob.

You smile. Your plan worked. You actually did it. You beat- You black out.

On a scale from one to dead, how dead are we?
>>
>>37034318
Guessing the potions counter acted with each other and only diluted the poison some what?

How mad/impressed are our friends.
Were we able to swoon Yuzuki a bit?

Only Mostly dead.

>>37034362
Yeah. Either would have worked but they are less effective when mixed. Don't worry though you won't be any worse off you just won't be able to be involved in the delicious aftermath of the bandit hideout.

Various degrees of "holy hell that was bad ass" to "how could you do this to us?"

Yuzuki is now indebted to you twice over for saving her life yet again. One more and you get a free large fry with any purchase.
