>In the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization.
>In the decades that followed, these mysterious artifacts revealed startling new technologies, enabling travel to the furthest stars.
>The basis for this incredible technology was a force that controlled the very fabric of space and time.
>They called it the greatest discovery in human history.
>The civilizations of the galaxy call it...

>MASS EFFECT

This is a likely one-shot or otherwise quite brief quest idea I had to keep my brain working before I continue Wulin Hero Quest. It explores an alternate timeline in the ME universe, and you will get to choose the backround of the hero in question rather then the pre-chosen character Wulin Hero Quest uses. Canon characters might show, but they likely won't be as you remember them.

will tech and biotic be getting a buff? in the game the only thing you could use them for was killing stuff, which was done better with a gun.
Sure, people who only played as a biotic said they had no problem, because the game was easy (even on higher difficulty levels), but an enemy that took 3 actions to kill with a biotic could be 1 shotted by a soldier with a sniper rifle.

The lack of the techs having any opportunities to do tech sucked.

also, i found the fact that biotics were powered by an implant chip (upgradable for more power) kinda ruined their flavor for me, turning it into just another type of gun.

"Gotta be SHITTING me...," you mumble as you fiddle with the unresponsive computer.

It's bad enough you're posted out here, but the computer system has been on the fritz since this morning. Anything tied into the overall network here has been unrealiable since this morning.

"Jack! We gotta go!" comes the voice of your friend Aeson back in the grav-car. He slaps the side of the ruggedd open-topped vehicle.

"Trying! My login to the company network isn't working, I got kicked early this morning!" you explain as you fiddle with the omnitool.

"No time Jack! We have a schedule to keep!" he says, and you swear and run over, hopping over the side to sit next to him, and the paramilitary vehicle jets off.

Aeson Favius is a turian with dark plates and white face-markings, and your bunk-mate here on Vanquo. You've been posted here on this human colony world ever since Elanus Risk Control Services, your current employer transferred you five months ago.

"My login kicked me too," Aeson says, handling the wheel of the mass effect open-topped car with one hand, his left dangling out the side. "Chief mentioned the computer network updates to you?"

You've known more then a few Turians, but you've never really had the same kinda prejudice you've seen in some Earthlings or Alliance military officials; back on Omega as a human you were in the minority, and you had to either get along with other species or get really dead really fast.

"He said so, yeah. Failed to mention that it would make the network useless. How am I supposed to check the extranet when I can't even login to the company portal?" you complain.

"Corporate cost-cutting," Aeson says, his jaws flaring in what passes for a smile among his soecies. "I'm sure we'll be distracted from it once we find out that we've been laid off, no severance package, and no we DON'T get a ride back home."

For a Turian he's a bit unconventional. While he still seems to mostly equate himself with the group, he's more independent-minded and plays a LOT looser with the rules. Like you he's a biotic, but there's sons kinda stigma against biotic in the Turian Hierarchy you don't know the details of. Aeson doesn't like talking about it. He also has a sense of humor, albiet a weird one.

"What?" Aeson says, not getting it.
Something you noticed growing up on Omega; aliens do not get metaphors or slang usually. Must be a language thing.

"High Impact Biotic Violence," you say with a smirk.

"Oh! Heh. That's pretty good, I gotta remember that one," he agrees.

You watch as the only partially-settled colony of Vanquo flies by.

Though the world has a growing population of over 500,000 people and a decent biosphere (lots of temperate rainforests), it's on the tail end of the Skylian Verge, very close to the Terminus Systems, thus no company was willing to sponsor it and the Alliance has a hard time patrolling it.

ERCS sponsored much of the colony, also providing security and protection services to reassure the locals that nothing will go wrong.

As you clear the tree line you see the rows of prefabricated buildings of New Seattle spread out across the grassy hill.

You LIKE it out here; on Omega there wasn't any goddamn plants anywhere, though Elysium below the Academy was real nice.

"Hear about what happened on Vaenia?" Aeson asks as he slows down. Aeson always drives; he complains about your driving whenever you do it.

"GodDAMN, what is it with you and your weird asari soap operas?" you say with a laugh. There's some kind of noise near the colony you can't pick up on.

"It's not MY fault it's the only thing the company's network is picking up, it's probably some deal the higher-ups have with Illium!" he points out. There's a pause. "Besides, asari are hot."

"I still don't get that. They look EXACTLY like humans," you say with a smile, but you look up into the air as the sound gets louder. What IS that?

"No they don't. They look like us, they have the sexy head fringe thin-" he begins, but he's interrupted.

"What the-!"

You ignore him and concentrate, and a purple-blue biotic field manifests around you. The field grows to envelop the entire car, and you PULL as hard as you can, slowing the car as you gradually increase it's mass and yank back on it like a cowboy trying to lasso a wild horse!

"EMP?" he asks, hopping out.

"A ship broke atmo above the colony, I heard it a second ago. It's fusion reactor exploded I think. Look," you say, nodding at the light in the sky high above, so bright it's hard to look at.

You haul ass, your headache dissipating as you move. Stopping the car actually isn't the toughest thing you did with your biotics, but you haven't worked them out like that in awhile. Usually it's just prying apart brawling farmers or spacers getting into fights.

"What happened! What's-" a civilian in work overalls says, and you grab his shoulders and use your soldier voice as you interrupt him.

"Emergency situation sir, get back into your home and secure the door, get your family and neighbors in theirs too! You'll be safer from the accident in your homes!" you order.

He nods, and runs off. You hope to got the fusion plant went off high enough in the atmosphere; there's no heat flash and you must only have caught the tail end of the blast wave but you have no idea how much radiation you're catching.
The prefabs won't keep you or anyone else here alive if there's too much.

You repeat this process eight times as you rush through, putting out a few fires from buster electronics with your biotics.

As you pass another house after quelling a fire near some fuel cells by cutting off it's oxygen supply a door to a public prefab slides open.

An attractive asari in a black outfit with violet markings on her lips, cheeks, and on her forehead like eyebrows walks out.

"Mam, you have to stay-" you say with a pause, then it clicks.

There ARE no asari in New Seattle.

After a pause that lasts between you both, you both raise your hands and activate mass effect fields!

She's slightly quicker on the draw (having obviously expecter trouble) and you find yourself in a Stasis field!

"Sorry about that Handsome," she says with a smile, brushing her azure fingers across your frozen face. "I'm kind of on a schedule at the moment. Better luck next time..."

You concentrate, and then push with your mind, shattering the Stasis field with a kinetic field of your own!

"I think my luck's fine right now," you say, cracking your neck. She clearly wasn't expecting you to be a biotic: the Stasis field was weak as hell.

She raises up a pistol, which you yank out of her hand with TK, then without pausing she thrusts her hand forward and sends out a TK pulse at the same time you do!

Your dark energy auras flare as you smash your kinetics against each other, causing the prefab to rattle and minor objects to begin flying about as the paired TK thrusts deflect off of each other.

Holy CRAP her biotics are strong, it feels like you're arm-wrestling with a krogan!

"Hm. Not bad Handsome," she complimemts as she leans into her biotic strike, her mass effect field increasing in force. "Didn't think there WERE any humans this strong," she admits.

A smile is playing on her blue face as he struggles with you.

"Haven't met any Grissom Academy students, have you?" you note, and you increase your field to match hers! The edges of the prefab are bending inward now; and nearby electronic are getting deformed and out of shape as you biotically wrestle with this woman!

Her face looks surprised, and she matches to compensate, but she didn't expect the raw POWER you can bring to bear.

Her face screws up in concentration and surprise as she begins to struggle with you.

Her TK blast tears apart the room behind you as you leap aside, and you feel the air displacement like it were a car flying past!

"Come on, now you're runnin-" she begins, but stops when you hunch over and activate a Kinetic Field and CHARGE forward, erasing the distance as you impact like a battering ram!

Just before the impact you see her cross her arms and reinforce herself with a Barrier! You slam into each other and both go flying as you impact on the far wall, blowing a person-sized hole in the prefab as you hit it!

You both go sprawling onto the grass into a clearing between the prefabricated buildings, likely a park or public space.

"Goddess!" she says with a cough. "When the hell did human biotics get so STRONG?!" She sounds shocked.

As she stands up you approach, creating a mass effect field around your fist and throwing a punch strong enough to stagger a krogan! She blocks with a field of her own, and then throws a biotic knee which you block!

Dammit. She has hand-to-hand training too. Time to find out how much Gunny Goldman's training holds up.

You mix biotic and hand-to-hand strikes, as you contest with her, trying to overwhelm her with your greater body mass, but she's too good at shoring herself up with biotics defensively!

"Okay Handsome!" she said irritably, clearly struggling with you. "Do you REALLY have nothing better to do then this!"

"You started it!" you say as she suddenly manages to flip you with some sort of Aikido toss!

You roll to your feet, bringing up your barriers to try and defend yourself from her oncoming biotic assault...only to discover she's running away.

As I understand it, what happens is literally the FTL concept applied on a much smaller scale. Essentially, Space is bent to allow you to cross a considerable distance instantaneously, with a supastronk biotic barrier keeping you nice and not splattered when the laws of physics reassert themselves. Essentially, you travel through a railgun barrel, except instead of electricity and metal it's biotics and the fabric of space and time.

You keep trying to climb up but it's all you can do to hang on with her driving around so much, truth to shake you off!

You swear and then pulls your head back as high as you can, and begin gathering a mass effect field around it.

In games and theory back at the Academy your teachers explained that when manipulating Kinetic Fields to increase the effective mass shadow of an object, how "heavy" and effective it was depended entirely on how much mass it vs how much mass you could increase it by. A punch was effecive, a kick was moreso, etc.

You notes that putting the greatest amount of mass into an attack would be an upper-body strike with your full weight behind it; it proved to be quite effective.

In Basic when you were going through training they just called it the "Krogan Special."

You pull your head back as far as you can, using dark energy to increase the mass of your upper body, and headbutt the vehicle's rear.

There's hard science behind this, man! It actually stands up to the universe's logic. A 'headbutt' really is one of the most forceful blows your body can deliver in a grapple, it's simply not used much due to 'But muh brainz'. With bionics, you don't have to worry about your brain so much.

Colonial vehicles are sturdy, even mass effect flyers like the car.

They are not "500 Newtons of force and 800lbs of added mass" sturdy, however.

The car dramativally bumps as your head tears through it like a battering ram, blowing apart sheet metal and various systems as you yank your head free.

Funny thing; this colony model is made by a Salarian company uses rear-ward maneuvering engines, akin to a rear wheel drive in regular wheeled vehicles.
You just put your face through the rear maneuvering engines one second ago.

"WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" the asari says in obvious terrors as she attempts to regain control with the flimsy backup maneuvering engines.

"Your under arrest for speeding in a public area, car theft, firing at an officer, illegally carrying a weapon, using biotics on a peace officer and a whole HOST of other shit I can't be bothered to list right now!" you shout back.

She leaps free of the car, using her biotics to slow herself into a graceful float, which you mimic as the car flies off past the prefabs into a nearby lake.

You both slowly glide to the ground, unable to perfectly disperse the existing momentum you were at, and both roll upon hitting the ground to let the kinetic energy harmlessly bleed out naturally.

You stagger to your feet at the same time she does, both of you panting hard. You sit down next to each other.

"Okay Handsome," she says as she takes huge gulps of air. "I gotta admit, I'm impressed."

"Good....," you say, equally exhausted. "Truce?"

"...sure," she agrees.

So you stand up, help her to her feet and then punch her lights out with a left hook before she can change her mind.

She falls and you catch her, grabbing her and carrying her over to a lamppost and taking out some ceramicuffs and slapping them around her wrists as you cuff her to the post.

After a second you apply some medigel to her nose, because you broke it and you feel a bit bad for taking advantage like that.

"Aeson, do you copy?"

"Aeson? AESON?!"

"Pinned down at the comm tower! Multiple hostiles! Radioed headquarters but I don't know if it got through! It's not EM interference, somebody's jamming comms!"

"I'll be right there!" you say as you check your appropriated pistol, a fairly bog standard ERCS M-3 Predator, and break off into a run after towards the gunfire you hear the distance!

You run until you get close enough to hear weapons discharge near enough that you play it cautious?

"Aeson? Tell me you're still standing?" you say, and then you see around one corner in a prefab a group of guys in armored suits keeping someone (presumably Aeson) suppressed out the window with rifle fire.

"Still intact! Could use some backup, these guys are getting awfully close!"

"Return fire from your position."

"I'm barely holding together in cover as it is!"

"Just do it!" you whisper.

You suddenly hear gunfire ricochet near the prefabs as Aeson returns fire from his position, risking their suppressive fire to shoot back!

They both duck low...which puts them in a shitty position to dodge you as you round the corner and drill both of them in the torso less then two meters away, four rapid shots barking out.

They slump, their torsos now have sucking chest wounds as red blood leaks out from them, and you walk up, putting one into both of their heads to make sure.

"Two less," you say, picking up the M-7 rifle one was carrying and slapping out the thermal clip, rifling through their armor pouches for a new one as you reload.

"They've stopped shooting at the other two positions, I think you caught them off guard!"

"These two guys seemed to think so," you note. "Can you give me position on the other two groups?"

"High hill overlooking the comm tower, the open balcony across from you." he says, and you look through the scope at the location. "And four prefabs over to your left, the vehicle garage."

The "phasing through cover" is actually more a gameplay mechanic; Charging would normally hit cover and then BLOW through it like a bull, but it would dissipate the kinetic barrier, halting the charge.

Because this would make it substantially less useful in combat given the limitations of gameplay they just have you "phase" through for simplicity's sake.
>>
>>37034069
i know they were, im trying to figure out at what year we are in. they were added a few months after the battle of the citadel when they took apart the geth weapons and saw the clips made it easier to break through shields
>>
>>37034123
It was more a joke, besides most time you won't be able to charge unless they are out of cover (at least their top half). Can we Nova like the ME3 biotics?
>>
>>37034188
Nova now, then we're getting our hands on a biotic hammer
>>
>>37034188
Basically you can use ALL Biotics powers because in the the "limitations" on what powers biotics can use is mostly gameplay; people don't have "ranked" powers they "level up", they just have biotics in general, divided up among the three branches of powers; Telekinesis, Kinetic Fields, and Spatial Distortion.

However as a Vanguard, Jack's "high-risk high reward" tactics make him most proficient at Kinetic Fields; he's really, REALLY good at altering mass (especially his own).
>>
>>37034340
So the kinetic fields shockwave of Charge and Nova is a go then? Well some more mooks are about to get ragdolled.
>>
>>37034340
so that means we can toss warps?

than the most efficient use is to warp, charge, biotic charged punch for a biotic explosion, then shotgun to the face.

unless there are no explosions. then i am sad
>>
>>37034406
warp is a spatial field, charge + nova would hurt more, plus knock em out of cover for a shotgun to the face.
>>
>>37033992

"Hold tight, I'll circle left!" you say as you duck low, keeping the familiar feel of the M-7 Avenger rifle in your hand. As an Alliance marine you're trained in it ("All Marines Are Rifleman" and all that), but these are close quarters, so you can't help but wish you had your damn shotgun.

Or your sword, that would be even better.

You hug low to the ground, ducking from cover to cover as you circle right, eventually climbing up the hill to the prefab.

"Logan, they're circling to meet you!" Aeson warns just as rifle fire goes over head and you duck behind a corner as the round chews through it.

"Watch my back, make sure the other guys can't sneak up!" you say over the commlink.

"Makes me wish I brought my knives...," Aeson says, and you see him begin firing from his position a prefab behind you.

You pop out after a gap in their firing signals a thermal clip run dry, waiting for the CLICK of them tapping out the thermal clip, and you pop out.

One of them has managed to reload faster and fires, which impacts on your biotic barrier, but then you pull back and CHARGE, impacting on the first hard enough to send him flying back into the prefab wall, planting him in it like the deadest, stupidest wall art ever!

Jump up and slam your fist down with a warcry, Noving the other two nearby, splatting them like pancakes against the walls and staggering back the final pair, which you immediately dispatch via a few quick bursts of brutally accurate rifle fire!

You feel heavy impacts on your shields behind you and you duck behind cover again as the other group manages to flank you just as you dispatch this one, and you fire blind to keep their heads in cover!

"Aeson, could use some support!" you say, sweating as bullets slowly chew apart your soft cover like a varren through a bone.

The gunfire gets closer to you, and you're still exhausted from your recent displays of biotics, but then suddenly Aeson's pistol barks out several rounds, and heads, necks, and chests blast open!

The four soldiers drop dead as doornails, and your friend rounds the corner.

"Nice. What, incin rounds?" you ask as you see the smoking charred wounds of the dead enemy.

"Yeah. Unlike SOME people, I remembered to bring my service weapon today, even on a day off," he notes dryly, but his jaws flare a bit in a turian smile.

"Can you fix the comm tower?" he asks as he leans over the body.

"Please. A Grissom Academy I was taking apart computers and putting them back together since I was fourteen. It's not JUST a biotics school," you note.

As you walk into the next prefab you come across the corpses of a settler family; a couple shot dead. You shake your head sadly.

Why the hell are they even killing civilians? None of this makes any damn sense to you.

"Salarias, human, asari. Camo patterns, milspec hard suits, fairly common weaponry," Aeson says through the crackle of commlink as he goes through the bodies.

You find more civilians, but it seems everyone who was in the area was killed.

"Asari? Nobody used any biotics on me," you say as you head down into the courtyard where the tower is.

"I popped the one with them before you got here. She knew how to use it too. If I hadn't gotten the drop on them at first she probably would've been a pain in the ass."

"How do you go from; 'have the drop on them' to 'pinned down and surrounded'?" you ask ask you open up the comm tower relay.
It's working fine as it turns out; there's some kinda device on the inside of it, and you begin to look at it with a frown, putting down your rifle.

"I snuck up on them but they were still expecting trouble. Plus ten-to-one odds is pretty lousy, even for me," he explains.

"How so?" he asks.

"Some kinda device on the comms relay. It's not jamming comms in general but it's running some kind of interception 'net' on all comms moving through the relay tower, and anything that isn't carrying some kind of keycode attached to a channel gets scrambled. They had good comms and we didn't, jamming wouldn't allow that. This is pretty sophisticated stuff, someone who knew tech put this together," you say as you scan it with your omnitool, looking at the readings. "There's even a 'gap' right in the middle that makes this place look free of jamming. No wonder they were ready for trouble; they set up this scrambler thing, take up positions around it and when someone comes here to 'fix' the relay tower they get then in enfilade and cut them down. Nasty work."

"I think I might have an idea of who set this up," he says over the commlink as you attempt to disable the scrambling device. "Found a tat I recognize from back in the service; I'm pretty sure these guys are Eclipse."

You frown, pausing in your work as you remove the device gently.

"The mercenary group?" you say, confused.

"That's them."

"The gear we're looking at hear and the sneaky trap makes sense with Eclipse, but why murder random people on Vanquo? Or blow up a ship on it's way here?" you ask as you radio up HQ.

Before you can answer there's a response, and you hear Captain Rabrinos speak over the line.

"-an you hear me? Block B officers, all respond!" his turian voice says.

"Logan and Favius reporting Sir!" you say, cutting off Aeson's reply.

"Spirits, I thought I'd never get ANYWHERE? What's happened? We were loosing comms right about this morning, and lost them when that ship in the sky blew!" he asks.

"No idea Sir. We came to investigate and quell any fears the local populace might have and were attacked by some kind of commando unit. Managed to take them down, but they had some kind of scrambling device set up on the relay tower," you explain. "We have one suspect in custody, haven't questioned her yet. She's an asari, seemed like she had commando training to me."

"Good. Bring her in, both of you then get back to HQ. I'm sending in a response team to reinforce the area. I want to figure out what the hell happened here," he says angrily.

"Aye-aye," you say with a nod.

"What?" he asks, clearly confused

You sigh again. Metaphors and colloquialisms.

"Affirmative Sir," you clarify, and go to meet up with Aeson.

Three hours later you're standing in Vanquo's security HQ across from Captain Rabrinos, who is working on his terminal, and he sighs.

"This whole day was a mess. We update the computer network, but then it turns out the network has some kind of virus, our network go down, commandos that Favius says came from Eclipse begin sabotaging comms, and some ship which wasn't even on the spaceport's registry blows up in orbit. I feel like we're missing pieces. Even our suspect captured got away!"

You remember with annoyance yourself the empty cuffs where the asari was left, and the message burned into the ground via what must have been a stray cutting torch she SOMEHOW got ahold of with her biotics and used to escape.

>Better Luck Next Time....

There weren't enough swears in the galaxy for how pissed you were when you saw that.

"Sorry Sir. I should've stayed with the asari Sir," you say, taking responsibility for your failure.

"No Logan. If you hadn't gone to help Favius he'd have been killed and then we'd likely have never even found out about the commandos in the first place. You'd likely be killed yourself as well; the entire block's security team was murdered by them."

"If you say so Sir," you say, still pissed at yourself. You're a damn good soldier, one of the top 5% of soldiers in the Alliance, the ones who complete N7 Training courses, so you're not used to loosing so completely.

"I do, so stop beating yourself up over it. I lost fifteen officers today, so I'm glad some survived. Which reminds me; how do you feel about changing positions here at ERCS?" he wonders.

"...Sir?" you say, confused, and Favius is also quiet, his jaws fluttering a bit in nervousness.

"Your position. You're an excellent security officer obviously, but both of your records frankly leave you overqualified for security work. You have credentials from the Grissom Academy and have N7 Systems Alliance training, and you Officer Favius have exceptional records from your service days with the Hierarchy Cabal you were in. Both of you are talented biotics with special forces certifications. Have you ever considered you might be aiming a bit low?" he notes.

Neither of you say anything. You can't tell if you're being derided or what.

"ERCS has been working on a project; we already provide reputable security contracts across Citadel space, but we're working on a more...active problem-solving solution," he explains. "How would you be interested in taking a more direct hand in this investigation as well as get a little payback?"

"Payback's a bitch, and I have one in mind," you say firmly.

The Captain smiles. "I assume that's one of your charming human colloquialisms. That's what I like about you humans; always so direct and go-getting."

"What exactly does this special duty entail, Sir?" you ask.

"Elanus Risk Control Services is one of the galaxy's most respected and diversified security companies, as you both know. Formerly all-turian, but we've long since opened ourselves to other shareholders as well as employees, a practice which I wholly approve of. But some of our newer security expert hires, like yourself, are overqualified. Similarly, there's a lot of galaxy out there and colonies near the Skyllian Verge and the Attican Traverse are always unstable, but still often paying customers when otherwise Council or Systems Alliance can't be bothered to take care of them. No offense to your species meant, Logan," he says with a wave of his three-fingered hand.

You shrug, not really minding. Despite serving in the Alliance Navy and being trained by it's special forces you have no real loyalty to them. You grew up on Omega, and joined the Alliance Navy out of the Academy because the signing benefits were pretty generous.

"Still, our standard security details are becoming less and less efficient, much to the Board's annoyance; it causes us to loose otherwise loyal customers to the Blue Suns and other competing interests partially because they often are more 'active' problem solvers."

Aeson finally speaks up. "The Blue Suns might have shareholders and an advertising division, but their boss is still an ex-slaver who suddenly got his act together in prison after meeting an infamous con-man. The Blood Pack are bloodthirsty lunatic who murder their way across the galaxy, and Eclipse, whatever their professional training may be, are barely better then gangster who are led by a literal madwoman," he notes dryly.
>>
>>37037487
what aobut making our ownf PSF and signing up with amal-ur arms?
>>
>>37037487

"I won't disagree there," the Captain says with a nod, folding his hands as he places his elbows on his desk. "Our shareholders and the Legate expect a higher degree of professionalism," he says, speaking of the ERCS's equivalent of a CEO.

"In that vein to deal with emerging threats in a more active manner we've been developing a Special Response Division, which can be contracted to actively hunt down security threats to various clients. The first is not quite up and running, but it will be soon. I'm willing to both of your names forward as candidates for it, where your skills can be put to good use, especially since the first test run is hunting down the perpetrators of this terrorist attack and dealing with them as necessary," he says simply.

"So we have leads then?" you ask eagerly.

"I'll need a yes or a no from both of you," he clarifies.

"Yes," Aeson says immediately as you confirm "Hell yes," as well.

"Good. Get your belongings together and head to the spaceport early tomorrow morning. You're going to Illium," he explains.

"Why Ilium?" Aeson wonders.

"Because Illium is where the exploded freighter was registered out of, and Illium is where this scrambling device you recovered was traced to. It's illegal in Citadel space and manufactured and sold only there."

You find yourself in your shared room later with Aeson, packing things.
"I can't believe we still have JOBS after that, I thought we were dead meat!" you admit.

"We might not if we live through this and don't succeed. This Special Response Division is new, and it sounds like we're going to be proof-of-concept. If we don't satisfactorily succeed then the whole project gets shot, and we along with it," he notes dryly.

You pause as you consider his words.
"Aaah fuck it. We can always find other jobs anyway. I'm just happy to go out and bust some heads," you say, waving it off as you partially draw and examine your sword with a smile.

"I have no idea why you use that thing," Aeson says with a shake of his head.

"Because I'm highly proficient in it, especially when using biotics and also it's fucking badass," you explain once again.

"It's an Iron Age weapon for spirit's sake," he complains.

"It's a monomolecular-edged tool of war and it's highly deadly when combined with biotics and you don't hear me making fun of your little knives, do you?" you say with some amusement.

"My Nightshade blades and talons are smaller, compact, more maneuverable, and much more suited to CQB work thank you very much!" he says with an equal level of annoyance as when he questions your sword.

>>37037962
Simple; take monomolecular blade. Swing blade. Use kinetic fields to make blade weigh fifty times what it normally does. You now are swinging a weapon with the impact force of a bullet with an edge only a molecule wide.
>>37037844

Eventually you pack up you equipment and head for the spaceport, following your omni-tool map to the right docking port where you see the ship in question.

"Huh. I don't recognize that model," Aeson admits with a shrug, but he doesn't look unimpressed.

"Me neither. It's not a standard Alliance or Hierarchy frigate," you admit, heading inside with him, looking around as you arrive inside the CIC. "Nice digs though. Private always beats military for comfort when it comes to travel,"

All you have to do it put eezo in the core of the blade. There's nothing hard about this. Expensive maybe, but the logic is sound. Same reason the Battlemaster's biotic hammer works. There's eezo used in its construction, allowing a biotic to alter the mass of his or her swing to however powerful they can make it without their amp frying or their brain popping like a zit.

It does if it cuts with the mass effect field, and bitch please, its the future, I'm sure we can make awesome steels for such a blade
>>
>>37038029
Of all the issues with the idea, that is by far the easiest to solve...
>>
>>37038029
You're not hitting them with the blade. You're hitting them with a slice of molecules surrounding the blade shaped into another blade with the mass of a truck. Assuming your a biotic strong enough to shift mass that wildly without killing yourself.

>>37038083
Same reason you need to raise your hands and gesture, mnemonics. Your brain has to force your arms to do a motion to 'focus' what you're doing. You need a shape to work with, a framework. Very few biotics can just throw out wild ME fields like crazy. Even most abilities in-game are based on geometric objects, stasis fields being spheres, warps being imploding spheres, etc. Even then, you still need the mnemonic to aim what you're doing.

Please, actually look into tool steels and the science of modern metallurgy before trying to spout facts, you make yourself a fool.

Several Japanese companies have already made steels that will not dull unless you deliberately try to dull them on things like diamond, while keeping them at around 57-59Hrc hardness, which means they are far from brittle.

"Running through controls, all respond green. Hapseatic interface light lag, adjust to compensate," she says as she runs down a checklist, speaking into a headset. "Long range sensors responding. Do a quick double-check on the lidar, getting some funny response times, maybe atmo."

"Heya," you say as you walk up, examining the cockpit. She shifts in her seat to look at you.

"Konnichiwa," she says, with a nod. "Kei Nagase, you're the ground leader, Logan?" she says curtly, and before you can answer she speaks into her headset again. "Radar's good, it's just the lidar then. I'm going to need that working, I'm not gonna fly blind here. And trim up those drive core numbers, I'm tired of looking at them drop whenever the ship's mass shifts low for FTL jumps."

"Did I just get promoted?" you ask Aeson, confused.

"No idea, maybe the Captain can explai-" Aeson says, and then draws his pistol as you enter the CIC and see a towering krogan there! You immediately spin up a dark energy field, and are about to lock him in Stasis when you pause.

There's a human female with a datapad standing next to him, and she seemed to be in the middle of taking notes.

"Planning to use that weapon Officer Favius?" he growls, seemingly totally unimpressed.

"How the hell do you-"

"Aeson...I think he's the Captain," you say, interrupting him.

The krogan's pale orange face breaks into a horrifying grimace that must be what passes for a smile.

"Your ops file is correct about how clever you are. Good," the krogan says. "Garm Weyrloc. Captain to both of you."

The human female is paused and he turns toward her.
"Well? Go tell Twitch what I said," he says, then adds "Or I'll eat you," as an afterthought.

>"Or I'll eat you," as an afterthought.
Aww what a softy, he's putting on airs just for a menacing impression
>>
>>37038799
Garrus isn't going to come after us for working with garm right?

If he does, kill garrus to keep the ex blood pack merc leader. He is the captain after all.

>It explores an alternate timeline in the ME universe, and you will get to choose the backround of the hero in question rather then the pre-chosen character Wulin Hero Quest uses. Canon characters might show, but they likely won't be as you remember them.

Different guy, same name. Garm was just "Garm", no clan name ever stated.
He IS Weyrloc Guld's brother though.

"Wouldn't that be 'Weyrloc Garm', actually?" you say, remembering what Ronek told you about krogan names years ago.

He gives you one of those terrifying grins again. "Quite correct, Officer Logan. I see putting you in charge of the ground team was a fine idea."

His skin is a ruddy reddish-brown color (paler on his neck and under his chin), and his plate is a steely, almost shiny metallic grey and his eyes are blue, and he turns his head to examine you closely with one. "You seem surprised to see a krogan is in command of this vessel."

You think about it for a second before answering honestly.

"You betcha."

"Understandable. Elanus Risk Control Services is originally a turian-owned company, and the turians have a long history of prejudice against my people," he notes.

"There's some reasons for that," Aeson says, not having lowered his pistol.

"Justified ones, indeed," Captain Garm says with a slight nod. "On the other hand this IS a mercenary vessel, not a national and I have over five centuries of combat experience, both in naval engagements and ground battles. ECRS recognized my talents and hired me some time ago. It seems they also saw fit to place me in command of this fine vessel," he notes.

"Oh. Okay," you say with a nod. ECRS must either be bigger on diversity hire then you thought or Garm must have REALLY good credentials.

"...maybe wanna put down the gun you have aimed at our CO?" you advice your turian friend.

"No need to worry, Lieutenant," he says, speaking to you, turning to look at Aeson. "His killers instinct and reflexes are why I accepted him as a member of this unit. He sees an enemy, he eliminates it, without hesitation or mercy. Most admirable in a soldier, wouldn't you agree?"

It's a compliment, but Garm's subtly mocking Aeson you think. He seems to take being threatened as a matter of course, and amusement at your partner's discomfort.

"Sorry Sir," he says, holstering his sidearm. "Won't happen again Sir. Disciplinary action Sir?"

"Unnecessary, for you did nothing wrong. You simply challenged a superior to see if he was strong and worthy of his rank. There is no shame in an action such as that," he says, brushing it off.

"Of course, Sir. I'll return to my bunk room, Sir," he says, walking off stiffly.

"Hm. 'The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting'," the krogan says as he watches the turian leave.

"....was that Sun Tzu?" you say after a moment's thought.

"Indeed, Lieutenant. Indeed."

The immense krogan captain walks off to the cockpit, and you sigh.

You think this is going to be a long trip....

Unsure.
Normally I run Wulin Hero Quest, but I've been taking a break on that recently to write up some new parts for it.

This was originally intended to be a one or two-shot quest, but I might do more if enough people are into it I suppose.

Well I'm into it, I think it would be cool to run it more frequently, I'm liking the characters and the setup of things so far so you've got me hooked.

Good writing lad, please continue this quest.

First off, I love Wulin Hero Quest and definitely want you to continue with that as the primary quest your running. That said, so far I'm really digging Mass Effect Quest too, so maybe instead of turning it into a one off you could just run mini-acrs in it whenever we finish something in Wulin or you just need more time to plan? I don't know if that makes since given your process, but I hope you find a way for us to continue with both without you burning out or losing net rest in either.
