@MercQuest

Welcome to Mercenary Company Quest! This game is based in the Iron Kingdoms universe and contain a mix of civ and quest styles. It's also my first attempt at running a quest so I'm very open to feedback!

You are Levi Meriweather, a recently established businessman in the port city of Clockers Cove. A city filled with a criminal underworld fighting for control of the ability to tax the numerous docks that scatter the city.

Last thread you hired Ben, a recently unemployed man capable of holding is own in a brawl. Together you met with the blacksmith Arland Cosgrave and agreed to deliver a crate unknown goods in exchange for a sack. While returning from the docks you were able to spot an upcoming ambush and sprung one of your own.

Upon returning to Arland he excitedly opened it to reveal a small container before tossing you the sack of remaining coins as a payment for delivery. Noticing for the first time his affliction, you see the item in the container is a brass mechanika eye and socket to replace his current glass right eye. He rushes you out and prepares to close his smithy while you return to the plot of land to count your loot. Inside the sack was a letter addressed to Arland and 94 coins.

>Deliver the letter to Arland
Deciding to get the important thing out of the way, you get out of bed and prepare yourself before heading out in to the common room where Ben is at a table eating. The letter lies unopened next to him, red wax stamp intact.

Greeting Ben, you scrounge the cabinets for food and find nothing, reminding yourself to get something while you're in the market. He finishes his food while you finish your preparations, taking his 10 coins from the pile and producing his own small leather pouch. You head out together into the bright morning sunlight to go back to the blacksmith.

Upon arriving to the smith you find the entrance closed with no note. "This probably has something to do with that eye he got in the sack." you think. There's plenty of openings you could toss the letter in to if you desired.

"Not our problem." You tell Ben as you toss the note inside a window. Stomach growling you turn around and scan the market. People are starting to fill the walkways and the shouts of vendors begin to fight for dominance of the airwaves in a battle you're starting to find familiar.

Wanting to spend this time getting the necessities you give Ben a small variety of things to be on the look out for and split up to roam the market. Almost intimidated by the bustle of the inner bazaar you choose to stay on the outer ring, drifting from tent stall to small shop outlets with windows and wallsigns.

Taking a variety of fruit and vegetables in your hand and testing them you find them suitable and pay for them. Repeating the process for a few hours before having what you deem as a suitable amount of food for the times ahead. Spending 10 crowns on your provisions.

Meanwhile Ben, caught in the hustle and bustle of the inner bazaar, holds on to his and your 10 coins tightly. He wanders the maze trying to figure out what to buy.

After a few hours spent browsing the markets you find Ben making his way out of the center of the bazaar. Looking sweat and beaten as if some great fight occurred, you rush over to him concerned.

He stands at the edge of the crowd exasperated, hands on his knees and taking deep breaths. "It's always hell in there but I've never been here this early. People are monsters in the mornings!" He yells as you arrive. You look confused as you notice his hands are empty. "Did you get robbed?" You ask.

He furrows his brow and has an ah ha! moment as he flings his arm and pulls of a few leather straps. It's just then you notice the leather backpack he's been wearing. As he sets it at your feet you take a moment to examine it. Multiple pockets, strong sturdy straps and even finely crafted bronze buckles.

"Even had to spend 5 of crowns of me own!" He exclaims proudly, taking the pack after your inspection and flinging it back upon his huge frame. It seems to fit him very well and you begin to make your way out of the market as the sun creeps it's way higher in to the sky.

The old rotten fence creeps in to view as you pass the last building on the way back to your plot. Unlocking the door, you place the food you purchased into the cabinets as Ben takes a few things and begins cooking.

After eating an excellent meal you and Ben prepare yourselves to head back out in to the city. With not much money you figure improvements would be minor right now.

The sun overhead you make your way through the streets and arrive on the main road. Workers work and people pass as you and Ben settle in to the flow of traffic carrying you to the shore.

Arriving at the Kraken you pass Biggs and Little as they play cards on a stack of crates near the door. The inside is warm as the hearth behind the bar crackles and small groups of men scatter the 6 tables on the floor.

Taking a seat at the bar, Harvey smiles as he turns around to see you again and gets you both a drink. Ben introduces himself, receiving congratulations on being the first employee. Producing a few sandwiches, you politely decline as you had just eaten. Moments after Eva comes from the back and grabs the plates of food before delivering them to a nearby table. Harvey winks and asks what the news is.

Taking the ale in hand you eagerly tell Harvey about your first job. Describing how delivering the crate to the dock was trouble free, you tell him about the mystery you felt surrounding the container in the sack and how easy it would have been to peek but you resisted.

After telling him of the ambush you faced walking back to the market, Harvey's smile temporarily disappears and he stops working on the food he was prepping. "Probably the Market Men, a small time group of people that plague the markets but can't be caught. Pickpockets mostly, wouldn't take them as ones to try and ambush you and the big guy here but it's possible. Even the Captain wants those ones and would pay for their apprehension I bet."

Continuing with the story, you tell him about the mechanika eye made of brass and glass, and how excited the smith seemed to be to receive it. You briefly wonder where Arland may have gone, perhaps somewhere to get that eye put in.

Another ale down and more small talk surrounding the details of the job, you ask Harvey if he may have any leads on where you could find some more employment. "Was hoping you'd be here about that actually." He responds. "The boys here are going to be out doing something tomorrow night and I was hoping I could get you two to stick around here for the night keeping watch. Usually we got the two outside but they're going to be in on the job."

"Other than tomorrow I got nothin for ya though" He says, pouring another round of ale before prepping more food for another couple that had entered.

Finishing your ales you bid Harvey farewell as you make your way out of the inn. The watery horizon fills your vision blocked only by the hulking steamships resting in the docks. Sunlight beats down upon everyone as some work to unload ships, others relax and fish from the docks and outlets.

For the most part you want little to do with the watch captain, but you figure if you can get some pay out of it he's worth the hassle. You make your way up the main street, taking the necessary turns to get you to the same watch post where you first met. The guards recognize you and let you pass after taking whatever weapons you had.

Watch Captain Luke Edmonds is sat at his desk, taking a fresh slice of parchment from a stack on the desk and examining it before grabbing a quill and giving a signature on the bottom.

"Hello again Levi! And friend!" He says with a smile as he places the paper and quill aside. "Your first hire is it? At this rate you'll be bigger than my city watch!" Laughing he stands up and shakes both your hand, "Certainly worth the investment." he says winking at you. "What is it I can do for you?"

You describe the ambush you faced on the way to the market. He looks stern before you tell him no innocents were hurt. "I've been getting more and more reports about that group. A bounty has been placed on the jailhouse board if you haven't visited there yet. Last update had them at only 7 strong, being so small that it's harder to get one to slip. 200 crowns per Market Man you capture as the bounty says. Boss is some guy named Nate and he'll fetch you 400 alone."

When you turn to leave the captain gives a quick whistle and smiles after you turn back to him. "The only reason why this information wasn't taxed is because I want those Market Men assholes to be dealt by me personally. They broke the very clear line that I have set and will be made an example of to the other under-dwellers in this city."

Exiting the cobblestone office you retrieve your items from the guards and proceed back in to the town. Figuring the gang at the Kraken an easy ally you tell the plan to Ben and begin your trek. A few hours of daylight remain, one spent walking the twist of roads. As you walk you find a new habit of looking in to the alleys, half expecting each one to contain some level of refuse, human or material.

The entrance to the Kraken, shadowed by a neighboring awning, creaks open as you find a much larger group of men at the tables than earlier.

Spotting Biggs and Little at the table near the door, you ask if Ben and yourself could sit before pulling the chair out and joining. Eva comes by a few moments later and delivers a round of drinks and food to everyone. As Ben introduces himself and you all make small talk you take a chance to study your surroundings.

All six of the tables were occupied as well as 2 of the three bar stools, Harvey stood behind the bar back turned and prepping food with Eva making a fresh retreat to the back room. Mostly men occupied the tables in mixed amounts, but one trollkin sat among them with his own over sized stein of ale. You count 13 other people in the inn, plus Biggs and Little. By the way they're all talking you assume this must be the gang.

You retell the story of your first job to the pair and they seem to snarl when you tell them of the Market Men. "A bunch of no good locusts, those ones. Do nothing but sneak up on people around the market and hawk it somewhere. Slippy bunch, whenever we've encountered it we couldn't get a hold of 'em."

"I was wondering if your group would be interested in working together to find them. Their bounty is 200 a head, 400 for the boss and we'd offer a share depending on the help we get." The pair chuckles and tells you that if they hear anything about it they'll let you know.

As you're finishing your drink and wrapping up your conversation you remember to ask them about anybody who might be looking for some work. A man from one of the tables stands up and Biggs tells you to try the Church of the Salient Souls on the other side of the river in the middle of town. Home to the homeless there ought to be someone there looking for work.

"But it looks like Seth's about to start the meeting so it's time for you to head out." You hear the man just beginning to speak and the men in the inn cheering as the door closes behind you. Harvey is at the door now with a key in hand, locking it and closing the curtains.

You begin the trek with Ben back to the house to avoid the early nightfall. The streets thin out as people ahead of you turn down the various side street or alley until you reach your own turn.

Exhausted from the days travels and trek into the bazaar, Ben retires to his room immediately. Feeling tired almost in response, you head off to your own room to sleep and reflect on the day.

Waking up the next morning, you remember you have a job lined up for tonight and consider what your preparations should be. Ben takes a days wages.

As you and Ben share the common area in your preparations, you tell him that he can spend the day trying his hand at finding work while you head to the other side of the river in search of the church.

He goes to his room and fetches his dagger, attaching it to his waist before saying goodbye and heading out the door. Finishing a breakfast you had prepared, you grab your pistol and conceal it under your shirt, fastening your sword to your belt.

Leaving the house the sun is barely starting to creep giving you a head start to the day as you walk the main road to a new side street where you begin the journey to your new destination.

As you make your way to the Church of the Salient Soul you make few mistakes on your way. Stepping down the occasional side alley, approaching southern of two bridges you see the large mossy stone structures posted with a smattering of guards.

As you cross the bridge you notice the two segments connected by chains to their respective sides. In case of emergency a bridge can be drawn and crossing prevented. You're not sure if the other bridge shares it's construction and cross hassle-free.

Getting a quick orienting point from a passing city watch you make your way to the church and enter the square out front it's gates. The church itself is a large stone structure surrounded by a cobblestone fence taller than a man. It lies in the middle of a large city square, inside its gates one of the few remaining patches of grass and a tree.

You enter the fence gate and approach the door, lifting your hand to knock before it's opened by a man who looks in his 30's wearing a white robe.

"I'm looking to hire someone for my company and heard you may have someone." You say with a quick bow.

Looking around the church the offering you see a variety of types as you're led around the outer edges of the building. Cots full of ragged men line one side while a grouping of tables sits next to it.

Most of the men on the cots are an instant fail, too meek to do much of anything. Making your way around the to the tables you see a man eating a bowl of soup who looks about 10 years older than you you'd say. Wearing a regular shirt you can see he has the kind of arms you'd find on a sailor. Thinking he's your best bet you decide to share the table with him.

"Good morning, looking for work?" You say as you watch him set his spoon down and look up at you. "Aye, happen to be I lost my living as a fisherman a few weeks ago. What kind of business you in?"

Tossing your bag of coins on the table you cross your arms and rest them in front of you. "Mercenary business. You'll be getting in on the ground level as I've only been in town for a few days, but I offer a steady wage and opportunity for some hard labor if that's your thing." You say with a smile. "Ten crowns a day, who knows what kind of opportunities for you in the future." Leaning back from the table you rest your hands behind your head.

"I be used to a good scrap on the boat from time to time. Not sure if I could do it fer a living but I can try!" He says excitedly, shaking your hand and finishing his soup. He makes his way to the cot that must have been his home for awhile and grabs his things, mainly a backpack and his bedroll.

He thanks the priest who you hear named Jesse and gives him a hug before following you out of the door. "Name's Thomas, Sir, but you can call me Tom" He says smiling as the sun sponges the floor through the nearby tree. You have plenty of time until your watch tonight and travel will be faster now that you have someone familiar with the city.

You make your way with Tom back across the bridge to the other side of the city. With the daylight still bountiful you decide to make your way to the market to equip him for tonight's job. Filling him in on the details of your time here so far, he laughs at your encounter with the Market Men but claims to have never heard of them. He tells you of his life as a fisherman in the city, living in his routine and avoiding the lull of the thriving underworld present in the city.

Upon reaching the market you walk the edges of the bazaar with Tom in tow as you try to spot what you need from the outside. You spot a vendor selling lengths of rope and approach him, spending 5 crowns on 60 feet.

With Arland's blacksmith still closed you search around the market for another place selling equipment. Finding a stall containing a small selection of metal blades and blunt edges. Tom grabs an axe from the counter, recalling his days with his father chopping firewood outside the city. "Most swinging of a sharp edge I've seen since my mother on the drink." He laughs. You hand over the 8 crowns for the axe and thank the merchant as you depart.

The market bustles as you make your way back to the corner of the market containing the blacksmith. Entrance still closed, you walk to the stall on either side and ask the keeper if they knew where he may have gone or what they may know about him.

In the first stall is an elderly man with a long beard and distant stare selling small bronze trinkets and statues. He tells you that Arland has been there for a many number of years and mostly keeps to himself. Always pinging away at the smithy, the stall on the other side of him is a constant rotation of owners unable to deal with the constant pinging. "But I find it comforting. It's like a metronome I heard once when I was a boy in the capital." He chuckles. "Took me a year to notice his eye though, caught me by surprise that did. Never found out the reason. I saw him rushing out last night, after you and your big fella matterafact. Bid me farewell and that he was going for awhile and to keep an eye on the place. Not uncommon of him."

Bidding him farewell you visit the stall on the other side, the owner scowling as you mention his name and going off on a tirade about the hammering, blaming the man who sold him the stall and cursing the cheap rent. Unable to give you any useful information you head out on your way.

Finishing up in the market you head towards the shore with your new rope and axe. The crowds are thin as you make your way, steam ships leaving and arriving as you walk along the row of docks.

The sun is just starting to hit the mountain tops as you make your way to the Kraken with Tom in tow. Ben is outside the inn smoking from a dark, polished wood pipe he seems to have bought today. Looking up to see you, he hands you a sack of coins with his days haul.

You introduce Tom and commence the small-talk, him showing off the axe while Ben displays his new pipe and club. They joke about what they'll do once they're done milking you and laugh as you all sit outside talking while Ben finishes smoking.

Satisfied, Ben puts the pipe away and the conversation finds an end before you all make your way in to discuss with Harvey. There are a few scattered patrons eating and drinking at a few tables but nobody that seems associated with the gang. You all take a seat at the bar and wait for Harvey to arrive from the back.

"Jesus Levi you're like a rabbit!" He yells as he comes out of the back, Eva following afterward to bus the tables. Harvey prepares you all some food and pours you a round. "Greetings newcomer." He exclaims as he places the plates and mugs down.

"We close in an hour, boys are out doing a job on some guys warehouse hoping to score some good cargo that came in. Needed the whole crew for it so we appreciate you coming in to watch the place, my blunderbuss only has one shot!" He leans back against the cobblestone hearth, fire warming his back. "50 crowns for the night, more if there happens to be trouble."

>Traps and Alarms (79)
With plenty of time to waste you set off to do what little preparations you can in response to an unknown enemy. Grabbing whatever items you manage to find lying around and the rope you bought earlier you fashion a series of noise makers at various entrances.

As the night progresses the three of you cease talking and settled in for the night in separate parts of the inn. Ben is taking watch outside, Tom is sitting at a table near the cobblestone staircase, and you're at the bar.

The moon is nowhere to be found, hiding behind the mountains and flooding the harbor in a ghastly shade. As Ben sits outside he puffs on his new pipe, red hot embers burning bright and, not considered by him, limiting the strength of his night vision against the strong black.

Definitely something we should deal with. Lack of discipline. One guy enjoying a smoke and probably day dreaming, another sitting at a table instead of patrolling, probably falling asleep while at it. We're probably not setting the best example either.

It's also the main gathering area of a gang with enemies, and a healthy target for burglars. You're right to reference professionalism, and we do lack experience as a group and leadership skills, but it's right to point out flaws along the road as we steel ourselves as a companion group with reputation. It's just an excuse so if anything happens next time we'll learn from it. Character and group progression.

A former sailor ex bum sitting at a table on guard duty. A month later they learn to patrol and take things more seriously, with a bit higher pay and better gear as well. It's nice when you notice the smaller differences later in their attitude.

A seasoned smoker, Ben knows to block the burning embers from his vision if he wants to maintain good sight. Scanning the shoreline to see the outlines of the ships resting there, he spots a small group of men making their way towards him through the dark. Carrying what look like clubs and knives, they spot Ben and begin a slow joke in his direction.

Heading back inside, he informs you of the group of three armed men heading down the street. You jump to action, readying your pistol and sword and heading back to the back room to inform Harvey. He stays in the back with his blunderbuss while the three of you make your preparations.

Taking a side by Ben at the front door, you instruct Tom to watch the door leading to the back alley. The footsteps can be heard among the silence as the group outside makes their way down the street.

Kicking in the door, the first man finds himself pulled in by Ben and flung overhead into the cobblestone behind him. Behind him rushes in a man with a dagger in one hand, making eye contact with you and lunging at you with it. You dodge the blade, swinging your sword in response and being brushed aside by his arm.

Ben glances back at the man he threw before looking at the third man coming in to the door armed with a sword. He lifts his club to block the oncoming blade and kicks the mans groin, knocking him to his knees before swinging the club across his face.

The man with the dagger continues his assault while Ben works his way to the flung man. Parrying an attack you hit the man with the hilt of your sword and knock the dagger out of his hand. Aiming your pistol at him, you hold him in place while Ben brings his club over to you.

As you and Ben begin trying to question him, the alarm of cups you made upstairs begins going off and Tom comes from his post to investigate the shouts.

Leaving Ben downstairs do handle the remaining man you take Tom to the second floor to deal with the new intruder.

A man around your age is exiting one of the rooms as you both reach the top of the stairs. You see the glint of steel in his hand as he begins a charge down the hallway.

Raising your pistol you do your best to make your shot count. Breaking the silence that had befallen the inn the crack of the firearm stops the man dead in his charge. Whether out of terror or impact you're unsure of until he falls, arms falling limp and dropping the dagger in hand.

You turn him over to reveal blood pouring out of a large wound in his chest right over his heart and a glaze over his eyes. You instruct Tom to mind the blood and bring the body downstairs near the alley. Getting a report from Ben you hear the man he clubbed had died as well.

One man remains conscious but turned toward the entrance, unsure exactly of what all has transpired and practically unharmed.

Ben heads to the back room to tell Harvey about what happened. You turn to the man on the ground and see that Ben had bound his hands. Kicking him to his side you demand to know how many of them there were.

He groans, looking up to see the pile of body that has accumulated and seeing he's the only one alive. "That's all of em you sunnuva bitch. That cunt bastard said there'd just be one person here god dammit." He begins yelling and thrashing on the floor before Ben knocks him with the club to shut him up.

You check the group for stuff and continue your watch until morning event-free.

The gang is nowhere to be found come morning so Harvey decides to take on the mess while you went back to the plot of land to rest. He gives you a sack of 100 crowns before you leave.

Before handing him off to the gang you interrogate the man one last time, hoping for some kind of useful information.

You discover their group was a small-time gang, hired by the Bronze Cog gang who owns the warehouse being hit. They received information from an informant he didn't know the name of that Harvey would be the only person at the place that night and they could have the run of the place

Thanks for joining me on thread three everyone! I hope everything is going to your liking and the pacing is okay. I need to improve on taking three updates to get places but it should change as there's less direct involvement
>>
>>37014743
Yeah, I'm definitely enjoying this quest so far. The pacing seems a bit slow but the writing is top notch so it's rather understandable you can't rush quality work after all.

If I had to recommend anything it's that next thread ask people to put on names, and rely on random roller yourself rather than have people roll themselves and others support them due to a scrying roll bias.

http://www.random.org/

Out of experience I'd recommend rolling twice for highest result since one roll is too random. It also leaves room for failure instead of taking the highest roll out of all player suggestions. Just an idea.
>>
>>37014843
Not that anon but I wouldn't say so.

>>
>>37014945
I get what you're saying, I don't necessarily agree with it but I get it. because what >>37014988
said is what generally ends up happening.. We can only hope there will be no Waifu wars.
>>
I don't mind the rolling being in the open. Rolling has been an uncommon thing but I can make it more structured for when it happens and what it effects.

But there is room for much flexibility in the threads to come, I'm hoping many many threads from now to hire your company on for the war effort, large scale stuff like that.
>>
>>37014988
Maybe the problem isn't prominent in these threads, or maybe it didn't develop yet, but it's a tool that helps shame and lessen samefagging. I can understand where you're coming from though. I've seen quest threads that suffered a lot of same fagging and having mandatory names definitely helped, and I've seen the circle jerking happen without names either. If anything having a name may help people being more respectful. Maybe we just have different experiences.

I think the roll suggestion though is more important, because a player may choose to follow a course of action simply because its roll is the highest. I think the rolls should be hidden and not foretelling future success.
>>
>>37015051
Sounds nice. Time zone is a problem but I'll at least follow the archive if I can't make it.
