Though the book store that you've come to frequent is quite small and you thought by now you knew where to find anything in it, this chore you've been given is doing a good job of proving you wrong. Every few minutes you discover something new, a corner you had missed, a book you had never heard of. Miss Christina's shop is a veritable treasure trove!

While you're discovering and learning from the list of the store's inventory in your hand, the unfamiliarity is not managing to slow you down in any way. This is good, because not only do you have to finish this chore, even if it is one you insisted on doing despite Miss Christina offering to simply buy the specific item you had in mind as her Christmas present to you, you also have to do it in time to go buy your present for Nee-chan.

Your name is Nina, you're nine years old, definitely a good girl, and you have a mission: To turn your sister's frown into a smile and secure as much Christmas Cheer as you can before Christmas! Your attempts so far have not worked as well as you hoped. While you did spend the night cuddling with Nee-chan, you also made her cry and failed to obtain any clues on what else you could give her for Christmas to cheer her up.

Now, with only a single day left you have embarked on a quest to acquire the perfect present. The only problem is you can't afford it, needing another thirty dollars on top of the thirty you had saved already. To fill the gap, you turned to your friend, the young owner of the book store which you frequent. If you can finish the chore she has given you, you will be able to buy the present and save Christmas!

You're about half way through the list when Miss Christina seeks you out, her store apparently not drawing a great number of last minute Christmas shoppers, instead leaving you as her only available company.

"Say Nina, if that was your sister in here earlier, aren't you curious about what it was she bought? She seemed to be in a hurry when she saw you, after all. Would you like to know?"

>Sure, of course you're curious! What was it?

"No time to talk, Miss Christina! Gotta work fast!"

Your enthusiastic response takes her by surprise, the disappointment clear in her voice.

"Oh, of course. You were in a hurry, weren't you? I guess I'll leave you to it, then..."

As much of a hurry as you may be in, you do feel a little bad for her. Clearly she was hoping for something more.

"Besides, I trust Nee-chan! She'll tell me if I'm supposed to know!"

Miss Christina lets out a satisfied chuckle, delighted to receive at least a little conversation before returning to her lonely vigil at her desk.

"So you should!"

You're not sure what last part is supposed to mean, but you don't have time to think about that, anyway! You're in a hurry, so you set about returning to your chore. Already half way there, you just need to keep up the pace and you'll be done with good time to go buy your present for Nee-chan before dinner!

Fortunately for you, and Miss Christina as well you suppose, a few customers do stop by the store during the rest of your time there for her to engage in conversation with, some of them probably a little longer than the customer had hoped for. The important part is this means that you don't have to shush her away again, and the peace and quiet propels your work effort to ever higher levels.

Only an hour later you check off the last item on the list, finding not even a single mistake. You inform Miss Christina as much and she makes a quick note in a small book on the desk before putting on a big smile for you.

"So how much do I owe you, Nina?"

You need another thirty dollars for the present.

>You definitely didn't do enough work to earn that much! Ask for just twenty, you'll find the rest somehow!
>Ask for thirty exactly, that's what you need after all!

"Well, I need thirty, but I'm not su-"
"Thirty? Sure, here you go!"
"Whu-?"

You weren't sure if you had earned that much. Normally you only get a dollar or two for each chore, thirty for one is... well it's as much as you've earned all of this month! But then, she did want to just give you the money outright. At least you mostly earned it, so you're still being a very good girl, you think. Even so, you hesitate slightly before slowly taking the money out of her hand.

"Well, I should probably be closing up for the day! You head on and go get your present before the other stores close too!"

That's a good point. You shout a thank you to her and pull the front door open, preparing to sprint to your destination before something important crosses your mind, stopping you on the spot. You turn around to see Miss Christina in front of the entrance, about to turn the sign from "open" to "closed" with one hand, her other hand working to pull a jacket over herself. She tilts her head slightly in confusion.

"Hm? Did you forget something?"

You give her a big nod, then jump at her, wrapping your arms around her legs.

"Merry Christmas, Miss Christina!"

You haven't actually hugged Miss Christina before, she was always behind her desk. It's very different, but still nice! She's much taller than Nee-chan, even though you're sure she's not much older than Nee-chan. You're not sure if Nee-chan is small for her age or Miss Christina is big, but you're not as used to hugging the legs of someone who isn't a real grown-up.

Miss Christina responds with a surprised gasp, before patting you lightly on the head.

"Merry Christmas to you too, Nina. Say, would you like me to go with you? Maybe I can help you get a better price. And I'm curious to see what you're getting!"

>Sure, that might be fun!

>>
>>37004147
You get the feeling that Miss Christina might be a little lonely. She never really seemed lonely before, but maybe it's because of Christmas? You've heard that some people get sad on Christmas because they don't have anyone to spend Christmas with, which makes you sad to think about. She did say she inherited the store, so maybe she has no family? You never really thought about it that way!

You're also spending a lot of time thinking and Miss Christina's smile is turning a little awkward waiting for you to respond.

"Sure! That sounds fun!"

If she really is lonely, you should definitely take her with you. Can you invite her home if she has nowhere else to spend Christmas? You're not sure your parents would allow that. And if she does, it would be very rude to invite her! Maybe you should try to ask her if she's lonely first, or something else to help you make sure you're not making a mistake?

Or maybe you shouldn't talk about that at all because it might make her feel bad? Talking certainly didn't help Nee-chan last night when you just made her sad instead!

>Ask her what she's doing for Christmas?

>Ask her what she does when she isn't working in the store?

"Hey!"

Miss Christina rips you away from your thoughts with the sudden outburst.

"I can tell what you're thinking. Don't worry about me! I'll be fine! Now can we talk about something else, please?"

Wow, you didn't even say anything and you still managed to upset her! Grownups are so strange! You wanted to ask her what she's doing for Christmas, but now you're not sure it's a good idea. You might upset her again. On the other hand, how can you cheer her up without asking about it?

Oh, guess that makes it a unanimous vote. How boring.

To change things up a little, why don't you guys discuss the merits of white chocolate VS regular chocolate while I write?

Personally, I kind of like white but sometimes it tastes really weird and unnatural, as if nature never intended for it to exist. Regular chocolate doesn't do that to me, so I prefer that.

You're beginning to sense a pattern here. When grownups and almost-grownups aren't telling you something, it's usually not something good. And that means, in the interest of ensuring as much Christmas Cheer as possible, you'll have to make your own topics!

"Miss Christina! Try to guess what I'm getting Nee-chan!"

She giggles lightly at the change in topic.

"Without knowing anything about her? That's not very fair!"

You accidentally let out a sigh of relief upon hearing her shift in tone, hoping she didn't notice!

"Fi-ine! I'll just tell you!"

The rest of the way to the store, which isn't actually more than a few minutes but you know how to make the most of even a short trip, you fill her in on the highlights of your quest, the many stores you visited and the hardest and most boring chores you did to save money. All the while, she listens with a soft smile on her face though her eyes seem to be looking everywhere around her, distracted by something.

By the time you arrive, Miss Christina knows everything worth knowing about your Christmas adventure, and a little more. Inside the store, you make a beeline for the aisle you know by now with great certainty to contain the bag you're after, finding only a single bag remaining. Lucky!

Miss Christina only barely keeps up as you rush back to the counter with the far-too-large-for-you backpack tugged between your arms. In fact, it's so big you can barely see where you're going.

>About Christmas Cheer and Christmas Dice

For the duration of the Christmas Special, dicerolling will be conducted differently. Any time dice are rolled, I will ask you to roll Xd6 each, with X being your current level of Christmas Cheer. The result of your roll is the highest number of identical rolls in your set. So if for example you rolled [4,4,3,2,5,6] your result would be 2 because you rolled 2 4s.

Additionally, if the largest number of identical rolls is made up of 1s, for example [1,1,1,3,5,4], the roll is considered a critical failure. If the largest number of identical rolls is made up of 6s, for example [5,6,3,6,6,2], the roll is considered a critical success!

To beat a check, your best roll must surpass an opposed roll using a number of dice determined by the difficulty of the action. Yes, everything that involves rolling dice has an opposed roll even if nothing is actively working against you because the fates are just fickle like that!

Your Christmas Cheer naturally increases with cheerful actions and events, while the opposite decreases Christmas Cheer. The more cheerful you are, the more succesful you are!

In your great rush, you completely miss the escaped tennis ball crossing the aisle just in front of you, now under your feet. Before you know it, you're falling forward and the bag has slipped out of your hands flying ahead of you. You brace, expecting yet another violent meeting with a hard floor, but your descent is interrupted as a hand tugs hard at your arm, pulling you back on your feet.

This has the additional benefit of giving you a full view of the flight of the bag as it heads straight for the young man standing behind the counter, his back turned to you. You're about to shout a warning when he turns in a snap movement mere moments before impact, grabbing the bag with both hands. How did he know?

He places the bag down on the counter, looking down in your direction with a cocky smile.

"That'll be sixty dollars. Can I get you anything else?"

Behind you, Christina is trying to look you over but you shrug her off to continue your charge to the counter and hand the man all of your money.

"No thanks, that's all the money I could save! It's a present for my Nee-chan!"

He raises an eye brow at that remark.

"Your wha-? Oh you're that Japanese girl's baby sister aren't you? I remember you two! This is for her, huh? Good choice, she could stuff just about anything in this bag and bring it a game and it'll still last years. Heh, she could probably fit you in here!"

You're a little confused by this. Nee-chan seems to think nobody at school likes her, but this guy is definitely excited to be talking about her!

"Look, if this is for her, how about I throw you a discount? It's only fair that we support a great player like her. I could probably cut this down to thirty dollars for you?"

Wow. You could've saved all of that trouble if this guy was just going to give you a discount anyway! But you don't really feel bad about that, you got to spend lots of time with Miss Christina instead! And more importantly, you have the perfect idea for what to do with the rest of the money!

You quickly finish your exchange, handing the bag to Miss Christina for her to hold, learning from your previous mistake, then grab by the hand and rush her out of the store and towards your destination. She does not seem pleased by this. She will be, though!

"Nina, where are we going? At least tell me what's so important!"

You shake your head, despite the pointlessness of the act.

"Not yet, it's a surprise!"

In your time at the book store, you've noticed Miss Christina always has a bowl of colorful gummy bears by the desk for the customers to snack from, but even when there are no customers she's still refilling the bowl a lot. So naturally, as a thank-you for being so nice you're going to get her those!

You stop in front of the candy shop and instruct her to not look. You're not sure how effective that is, you dragged her all the way to the entrance after all. But still, she shouldn't look when you told her not to, right? Otherwise, what's the point of anyone ever asking?

Inside, you point out the gummy bears to the friendly girl behind the counter, but apparently she needs to know how many you want.

>Enough to fill a bowl or two should be fine! The rest of the money you've definitely earned.

>>
>>37007206
Thirty dollars would be way too much candy! There's no way she could use all of that!

Besides, you did work for that money, some of it should be yours. You hand over half of your money and the girl sets about filling up a very large paper bag. When she hands it to you, you're very glad that you didn't spend all of your money. This bag is heavy!

Back outside, you find Miss Christina actually waiting with her eyes closed. It only just occurs to you how awkward it must have been to be left alone on a busy street with your eyes closed. You prepare yourself by holding the bag out for her, making sure it's open so she can see inside, before giving her the word to open her eyes.

"For you, Miss Christina!"

She breaks into a proper laughter, unlike the giggles and chuckles she usually lets out.

"This was supposed to be a present for you, not for me! I don't even know how you managed to turn this around on me."

She bends down to take the bag from you, pulling you in for a quick hug while she's there.

"You're too sweet, Nina!"

Well, that should conclude your business in town for the day. In fact, you'll have to hurry if you want to get home before dinner, so you hurry a good bye to Miss Christina before setting off in a sprint.

"I have to go home now, thanks-for-today-merry-Christmas!"

Already a good distance away before she can respond, she shouts behind you.

"Merry Christmas!"

[Christmas Cheer +4]

Back home, you find your mother almost done setting the table. That gives you just enough time to run to your room and hide the present under your bed!

The dinner itself is quite boring compared to the day you've had. Nee-chan is absent as she often is, and your father asks you if you know where she is, earning himself a "don't know" as usual. Your mother sets into another series of complaints about her which you quickly tune out, focusing on the meal instead. You hate that they can't get along, but you know you can't change that so you just don't listen at all. Your father usually does the same.

By the time the meal is complete it's already dark out and Nee-chan still isn't home. You're not really worried, she always take good care of herself. And on the bright side, this gives you time to wrap up your present!

You grab all the tools you need while your mother is distract and sneak them into your room to set about the task. The wrapping is bright red with little green and yellow stars on. Not her favorite colors, but it'll do! You've barely finished the job when you hear two gentle knocks on the window, followed by a third. Looks like Nee-chan is avoiding the front door again.

>Shove the gift back under your bed, then let her in.
>She can use the front door today, that'll give you time to find a better hiding spot for your present.

As quickly as you can, you shove the gift back under your bed. It's already wrapped up, but you weren't supposed to get one for her at all and you want that to be a surprise too, not just what's in it! You're already standing up when you remember the wrapping paper and scissors still on the floor, which you promptly kick under the bed as well before running to the other side of the room.

You carefully unlock the window before jumping to the side in expectation of what you know is coming. The moment you do so, the window jumps open and a stream of black hits the spot you were occupying just a moment ago. Nee-chan looks around in confusion, perplexed by the lack a you knocked beneath her. Finally she spots you on her left and cracks open a fresh grin.

"Good! You're learning!"

She extends her arm to ruffle your hair before standing up to close the window behind her.

"Guess you get off easy tonight! It is Christmas after all. Oh hey, check this out!"

She drops her bag, much smaller than the one you've gotten for her and quite worn, to the floor, opening it up to grab whatever prize is inside, then pulls it out to present to you.

Paper stars. Just three, though they're a bit more complicated than the ones you make in school.

"Appropriate for the season, right? I made them, figured we could put them in the window, maybe? What do you think?"

[Christmas Cheer +1]

Huh. You thought she was sad, but she's actually showing a lot of Christmas Cheer tonight! You wonder why that is. Maybe making these were enough to cheer her up?

"I like them! Nee-chan! Can you teach me to make these too?"

Already setting about hanging the first star from the curtain rail, she looks back over her shoulder to you.

"Hm? Sure, it's easy, anyone can do it."

You're about to break into a cheer when she finishes tying the know and turns to you.

"But," she pokes you on the nose, "you are definitely too tired to learn tonight. But don't worry, I had something else in mind."

Forgetting the other two stars, she grabs her bag and tosses it onto her bed, following quickly after it herself.

"I know you're not supposed to do the whole presents thing until in the morning, but I was thinking we could do that tonight, just the two of us without any stupid parents."

She grabs a mysterious object from inside her bag once again, pulling it out to reveal neatly wrapped present, complete with a bow and everything. It's a lot smaller than yours though, so you don't feel bad about that!

"Sounds great, right?"

>Sure, you'd love to exchange presents now!

You know that's not how it's supposed to work and you don't like breaking the rules, but you also know Nee-chan doesn't get along with your parents very well. That's probably why she stayed away from dinner too. Maybe it really would be to do it right here, just the two of you with nobody to interrupt your intimate moment. Yes! You definitely want that, for both of your sakes!

"Sure Nee-chan, that sounds wonderful!"

You do your best to beam at her as you say so. She smiles back, the biggest smile you've seen from her in months. She really found her Christmas Cheer after all you think to yourself. She slides down unto the floor in front of her bed, and you sit yourself down in front of yours as well. Maybe it's just your imagination, but for a moment you could swear you saw the three stars lighting up, even the ones still sitting on the windowsill.

She holds out the small package for you, and you take it out of her hand. This shape and size, holding it in your hand you quickly realize what you're looking at. Catching the look on your face, Nee-chan sighs in resignation.

"Can't believe you walked in on me the exact moment I was in that store. Sorry the surprise got spoiled like that."

You shake your head softly, eyes fixed on the present. You still don't know which one it is! You attack with ferocity, ripping the paper from one end to the other until nothing stands between you and your prize, finally revealing.

A Beginner's Guide to Japanese Language and Culture.

Nee-chan puts on a nonchalant tone in response to your growing eyes.

"Figured since you care so much, maybe I could help you study it and such..."

[Christmas Cheer +4]

She... She'll study it with you? And spend lots of lots of time with you?

You cannot contain your excitement at all. Ever since you learned Nee-chan had a different mother you've wanted to learn more about it. You know she doesn't live in Japan or anything, but it's still part of her and you want to be closer to that part too! Daddy said you should leave it alone because you would annoy her, that she would want to keep something that's only hers but he's wrong. Nee-chan loves you and wants to let you in and this is definite proof!

You explode in a burst of joy, pushing yourself into her with all the strength you have.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is great, Nee-chan!"

She laughs as she desperately tries to peel you off of her.

"Glad you like it. So, wanna start tonight?"

The important thought flashes back into your mind, and you loose yourself from her.

"I got you a present too! You have to open it first!"

She sighs with a hint of frustration.

"I told you not to get me one..."

You ignore her complaints as you drag the gift from under your bed, your sister's eyes turning wide at the sight in spite of what she just said. You push the present the rest of the way across the floor to park it just in front of her.

"Open it!"

Nee-chan doesn't even hesitate, curiosity fully claiming its victory over any grievances she might have just felt. In a fashion only slightly more refined than your previous display, she tears open the hidden treasure, revealing the fruits of your hard labor, the sight taking her completely off guard.

"Nina... This is expensive!"

You feel yourself twitching slightly, the excitement of hearing what she thinks of it flowing through you.

"I saved for it!"

She shakes her head from side to side.

"You shouldn't have done this, sis.. You shouldn't have!"

You gulp down, uncertain what to make of that.

"Don't you like it?"

She finishes pulling the backpack from the wreckage of what was once gift wrapping, inspecting it closely, feeling every pocket carefully, pulling all the zippers up and down, all the while mumbling to herself about eggs, toilet paper, and other things you can't quite make out. Finally, she looks up to your by now quite nervous face.

She smiles.

"This is wonderful, sis! I don't know how you made all that money, but thank you so much! I'll put this to great use!"

Her smile twists into a sinister grin as she finishes that sentence. It's a little scary, but at least she liked it!

"Yes!"

You yell loudly enough for Nee-chan to feel the need to shush you. Right, you shouldn't make a lot of noise or someone may interrupt your emotional moment!

Nee-chan stands up and place the backpack in her corner of the room, next to her closet, then sits down at the end of her bed, patting her lap invitingly.

"Well, come on then! Don't forget the book!"

You make no hesitations, quickly picking the book off the ground followed by a leap from the edge of her bed, landing yourself harshly into her lap as she lets out a surprised "oof!"

You settle yourself in properly and smile up at Nee-chan behind you, as she wraps her arms tightly around you. A little too tight maybe, but you're not going to complain.

"Oh, before we begin, there's one thing!"

With one arm she reaches into a pocket in her shirt, pulling a note out and handing it to you.

"One important word you should learn right now!"

You unfold the note, reading the strange word within. You don't know this one yet.

"Kay-kah-koo? What's it mean, Nee-chan?"

A chill of horror runs down your spine as she leans her head in next to your ear.

"My sweet, naive, little sister... When will you learn?"

You've made a terrible mistake.

Clearly the power of tickling is taught through induction, and Nina has had a formidable teacher indeed...
>>
>>37010887
Not even a moment within realizing your mistake, you feel Nee-chan's arms tightening further around you, locking you tight. You're not getting out of this one. The first giggles are already escaping from your mouth as her fingers begin to work their dark craft upon your sides.

This is not a first, you've been here before. You know what comes. Nee-chan is relentless, Nee-chan shows no mercy. She will not stop until you are left a trembling wreck struggling for air, and then she will keep going a while longer just to be sure.

You do even try to plead with your eyes, merely quaking inside and out when you witness her wicked grin. Whatever you have done to earn her ire, she intend to see her vengeance exacted in full, your life a mere toy to her will.

It is in this moment that you realize what you must do. Even as your laughter grows louder and your breath more erratic, you feel your will surging within. Tonight, you wield a power far different from hers Tonight, the power of your Christmas Cheer fills you. Tonight, you will make your stand.

You wait, patiently, for your opening, letting her think she has already won. Even with your newfound power, enduring her onslaught of tickles is a difficult task, but in the end you are rewarded as she switches her attention from your sides to your feet, thinking you weak enough to let down her guard.

You take your chance, twisting your entire body to escape her grip. She lets out a yelp of surprise, hesitating for a moment as she struggles to realize what just happened. You do not hesitate, quickly flipping yourself around to turn your feet towards her head, planting both firmly on her arms to lock them down.

Now, with her primary weapons disabled, for the moment at least, you're free to focus entirely on the target ahead of you. Not her feet, you already know that's a trap. Nee-chan isn't ticklish under her feet, no, not at all. Her weak spot is somewhere you wouldn't expect it, behind the knees.

1/2
>>
>>37012093
Wrapping your arms around her legs, you summon all your strength to pull her legs into the air, exposing the strategic point you both know will win you this fight. Behind you, Nee-chan gulps down.

"Don't you dare!"

You dare.

You relish in the sound of your imminent victory, a jovial sound just that little bit different from any you have ever heard before. Her laugher roars through the room, her body quaking under your counter-attack. She begins to twist, rolling from side to side with ever increasing frequency, destabilizing your position. Finally, you're forced to plant your feet on the bed to retain your balance.

A crucial mistake.

Even as her sides tremble under your assault, she does not hesitate any longer, quickly grabbing you with both hands, lifting you into the air, turning you back to face. Slowly, she lowers you down towards her, her steel gaze piercing your mind for what seems like ages. Finally, she lets up, letting your spirit breathe.

In a rapid move, she lowers your head to yours, placing a kiss on your forehead.

"I'm so proud of you right now."

She does not allow you to respond, immediately dropping you from the air and unto herself. Round two has begun.

You'll never be quite sure how long this exchange lasted, neither of you really knows. What you do know is that you both ended the fight broken and breathless, barely conscious as you fall asleep in each others arms. A perfect draw to most eyes, but you know that for just that one brief moment, she was passed out and you were not.

You never forgot that victory, as tiny as it was. Nor did you ever sleep quite as well as you did that night.
