@MercQuest

Welcome to Mercenary Company Quest! This game is based in the Iron Kingdoms universe and contain a mix of civ and quest styles. It's also my first attempt at running a quest so I'm very open to feedback!

You are Levi Meriweather, son of a wealthy nobleman that has recently decided to forge is own path in the world. Taking your fathers blessing and a sum of money, you made your way to the Cygnaran capital of Caspia. It wasn't the first time you had seen the city, but it was different this time knowing you wouldn't be going back.

After meeting with a real estate broker near the bustling docks of the city, you are the proud owner of a plot of land on the outskirts of the nearby Clockers Cove, a city filled with labyrinthine alleys and enough crime to fill them. Arriving by ship at your new home and meeting a few new folks in the Kraken Inn, you've made lucky friends with a capable local gang, and had a tense run in with Captain Luke Edmonds in the acquisition of your Mercenary Charter.

The morning sun is intense as its rays pierce the imperfections of your new house and wake you from your sleep. Your body groans with the exhaust of yesterdays seemingly nonstop walking and you stand up from your bed. It's quiet outside, whether that's due to the time or your location is to be known but you enjoy it while it lasts.

Before long you've tidied yourself up and are ready to begin the day. There is still much to be done now that you have your charter, but after your encounter with the captain you're left with 50 gold crowns left to spend.

>Focus on finding someone to work for you
>Focus on finding some work for yourself
>Focus on finding some equipment for yourself
>Go to the Kraken
>Explore the city
>Go to the docks

Also remember you need to pick a name! Last thread Gilded Companions was the leading contender!

>Focus on finding someone to work for you
With only 50 crowns left you're not sure what kind of help you're going to get but figure any is better than none.

You secure your money to your side and proceed out your door, locking it behind you for what it's worth. As you walk towards the nearest street the sun is barely rising over the distant water-filled horizon.

The streets are sparse of people but awash with light. A few families make there way opposite you and you fall in step with a pair of men to your front. Having never tried hiring people you have no idea what you're doing and find yourself quickly lost in thought.

You turn on to the main road and begin your trek to the docks, figuring that should be the busiest place once the day goes on. While you walk the streets become busier and busier with work and pedestrian traffic. Men haul heavy crates and roll barrels along the cobblestone.

You spot a man lying against a group of crates in a corner of the street untouched by the sun. He has a bottle in his hand, and what you can see from the shadow he looks fairly well built.

"Get up, you lazy lout!" You deliver a sharp kick to his ribs to emphasize your point. "You're working for me now, see? Two crowns a day, more when you work, as well as a bed and three squares. I gear you up, you fight with me. Deal?" You offer him a hand up.

You approach a nearby man that had just set down a crate and give him a "good morning". He turns around dreary-eyed and gives you a quick look up and down. "You're new here." he says bluntly, crossing his arms and staring at you. "What can I do for you?"

You look over at the man in the shadows and gesture, "Do you know him? I'm... well I've never had to do this before but I'm looking for people to work for me and I have no idea what I'm doing." you almost stutter out

He chuckles, stepping briefly out of the way of a large trollkin with a keg over his shoulder and a net of small boxes in his free arm. "That guy over there looks promising." a shout from the back jumps the man you were talking to back in to the line of workers.

You decide not to make a scene as you attempt your first hiring. Being new to the city you have no idea what the streets are like, aiming for caution.

People pass by as you make your way to the man, stepping past a lightly dressed ogrun carrying a crate towards the docks and stepping to share the same shade as the man.

You let your eyes adjust before approaching him, giving him a light kick to his shoe and slowly stepping back. With your sight adjusted you can see he looks like a man meant to be a brawler. He grunts and blinks his eyes, dropping the bottle as he stands. Taller than you, the man looks down at you, a short head of hair accompanied with a rough mustache. "What'd'y'want" he groans out, lifting his arms and moving them to his sides to stretch.

"I'm a new company in the area looking for someone like you to work for me. Mercenary work around the city, who knows where else doing who knows what. If you agree I have quarters available and would appreciate any insight you could offer to this place."

He looks shocked. "I didn't figure you for much of a fighter, but I just happened to lose my job so what the hell. Bennet is the name, Ben if you're my boss. So what's the pay like?"

"You get paid when I get paid, when that will be I don't know but you'll have to have faith." You say walking back in to the sunlight, streets continuing to fill.

You come to an agreement with the man and he follows as you make your way towards the market. Walking side by side the people step out of your way when they notice you. Maybe you look like someone important from out of town, maybe it's this man half a head taller than you walking alongside.

You come to the market and see the stalls bustling with activity. Looking up at the sun it seems like it's almost 10 in the morning, tall chimneys bursting with fresh smog and steam and whistles echo through the cobblestone foundations of the buildings. The whole city seemed to have come alive while you were in your travels.

The market itself is a large bazaar, a maze of stalls in the center with the surrounding buildings containing a mixture of open air smiths and closed door shops.

You're walking around the outside of the bazaar, watching the crowd as some hustle past while others troll leisurely, taking time to pick up and examine each find. A group of people stand in the shade of a nearby building talking and laughing, glancing your way as Ben and you pass by. Ben keeps his gaze forward, making smalltalk as you approach the corner of the bazaar and the clanking sounds of a smithy.

Passing in to the shade of his straw cover you see a large open area set in to the corner of the market square. A furnace, anvil, and smith sit off to the right, hammer clanking repeatedly. Focusing on his craft you fail to notice the young man appear from a room to the left.

"Mornin!" He yells over the sounds of the hammers and crowds as he places himself behind a large counter. Clubs and cudgels dot the floor standing against the wall, behind the counter is a variety of swords, axes, and flails. A single pistol and rifle lie behind the display glass of the counter, resting on bolts of cloth.

You kneel in front of the glass pane, eyes caught on the rifle on the cloth. Back on the vineyard your father had little interest in firearms but he kept an old blunderbuss around for special occasions. The apprentice anticipates your question and leans down to grab the cloth and place it on the top of the table.

"An old military rifle we picked up from an auction. Cleaned up and ready to go. Fourty crowns, we have 10 rounds for it for an additional 5 crowns. Twenty-two crowns for the pistol and 10 rounds." The clanking of the hammer continues unceasing, shouts from outside rising and fading as crowds pass by the straw awning.

While you're distracted at the counter, Ben goes to the shelf and picks up a club and banded club in each hand, weighing them and hefting them around before dropping the ironclad stick in favor of a quicker one. He approaches you at the counter and produces the club. Setting it on the counter he walks away to browse while you finish.

>You have 50 crowns, Ben wants the club and knuckles but can swing his arms with most things in it
>>
>>36947988
Pistol + club and knuckles

No mace? Silly guy. At least get him the banded one I guess.

Let's get ourselves... a sword, for right now. Something sturdy; reliable.
>>
>>36948054
Pretty sure he went for the normal club because it was "quicker" not because it was cheaper.
>>
>>36948073
>>36948059
How about we actually get something we don't need to continually purchase ammunition for? We can get guns later, when we actually have cash and don't need to buy armor and food.
>>
>>36948129
Well I suppose that's logical. Just reactionary about the pistol. We need a melee weapon anyway. Going with sword. Axe seems a bit excessive.

to >>36948171 just so there's no double counting.
>>
>>36948129
well, for one, once we shoot someone we can just pick up their weapon and use it.

win/win.
>>
>>36948194
All I'm trying to say is that our funds are being stretched a little thin at the moment. No need to live beyond our means, especially when we can always get better at fighting.
>>
>>36948198
To add

They don't have a weapon? Ben cracks skulls. Also, ammo is only 5 gold for 10 shots.
>>
>>36948198
Actually, yeah. Can't believe I didn't realize we could just loot dead bodies.

>>36948194
Keeping my original vote from:

>>
>>36947988

the others have put up a good point that we can just loot weapons.
>>
>>36948243
>>36948198
We have fifty gold. We still need to buy armor and food for a while. We have no idea what the pay off for our first job will be. Let's not stretch ourselves too thin, here.

You ask for the knuckles and pistol, quipping about being back for the rifle before long. Taking out your coin purse, you count out 30 crowns as the club disappears from your sight in to Ben's hands with the knuckledusters.

As you're walking out with your new purchases you notice the smith has taken a pause in his work. Sitting on a bench in the corner beside the anvil, he takes drinks from a large wooden mug, setting it on a nearby surface before standing up.

He walks towards you, taking off his glove and extending a hand out to you. "You are Levi, yes?" Shaking his hand you tilt your head slightly and try not to look confused. "I am a friend of Harvey, he said you might be showing up around here. You are looking for work, yea?"

Surprised by your luck you break in to a smile. "Yes, actually. Know where I can find some?" He shouts at the boy and he runs off to the back, returning a few moments later heaving one side of a large crate as he drags it along the cobblestone.

"This crate needs to go to the last dock on the Kraken side of the harbor. Take the wagon outside if you need it but bring it back. There will be a ship there until tonight. Used to sail on it myself before settling down here." You didn't realize how muscular he was until the man heaves the crate to Ben. Unflinching he grabs the handles and holds the cargo steady. "Anyways, they'll give you a sack of something that I trust you won't disturb and when you get back we'll do some calculating."

You thank him for the opportunity and take the newly purchased weapons while Ben walks untroubled with the crate towards the entrance.

The sun has grown higher over the bazaar when you and Ben exit. The cart lies under the awning, handles facing outward and ready to be pulled. Ben sets the crate on the wagon and walks around to grab the grips, leading you on the way out and in to the square.

As you cross the threshold of the awning and enter into the sunbeams again you're filled with a new sense of pride and purpose. Your first job, and there's no chance you can mess this up, not with big Ben here, you think as you find your stride behind the cart.

The crate is about 3 feet long you estimate, a foot wide and even less tall. Even the crates craftsmanship is admirable as you glance at it between sweep of the crowd. You're heading straight to the docks, you told Ben as you make your way down the main road. You grab the ammunition pouch you purchased and finger its contents, trying to fill the time spent walking.

You reach the intersection of the shoreline and the main road, a steam jack on the dock ahead of you loading large crates on to wooden platforms hoisted by rope and crane. Turning towards your destination it's not long before you arrive at the dock.

A man quickly runs down the gangplank smiling, tossing a sack in to your hands as Ben stops to let him take the crate. It's not long before he's gone with the crate. You look at the sack and see it's just a simple drawstring.

You fondle the sack and it seems to be filled with a decent amount of crowns and a large egg-like bulge that rolls around with them. Walking back up the dock, wooden wheels clomping along the street you now walk alongside Ben. Tying the sack on your belt you dodge a labor jack and turn the corner back up the main road.

Your perspective at the base of the Wyrmwall mountains shows the highest peaks preparing to impale the sun. The main road bustles, your cart giving you leeway in the crowds. Taking a turn towards the market the buildings begin to overshadow the roads. You can see the market in the distance and continue your trek, a majority of the path void light.

Short of standing right behind them you couldn't be more prepared for the trap that's been laid. As you gaze down the pathway, observing the crowd you notice two men turn in to alleys opposite each other, and shortly after you spot a third ducking in to a doorway a few yards down.

You continue walking normally, standing beside Ben and informing him of the situation without looking so. Using the people behind you as cover you reach for your pistol which you had taken the joy of loading it at some time during the trek. You tuck it in to your waistband and cover it with your shirt, holding your hand close as you walk.

You figure you may be safe if you keep with the crowd and begin to doubt if it's even some ambush, copping it to an overactive imagination given the excitement of a first job. Ben has his club secured to his belt but you notice the knuckledusters contrasting the wood of the cart.

The alley is coming up, you figure you're within range of a shot from your pistol at this point but it's been awhile since you've practiced with one.

You whisper the plan to Ben as you continue your walk. Glancing at the crowd ahead you try and get a peek at anybody that may be in the alleys or doorway. A slight outline breaks the light behind one of the barrels that confirms your suspicions.

Walking until the doorway was clear of people, Ben grunts as he runs the cart full speed in to the door frame, a loud groan coming from within as the edge of the cart hits the man in the head who had crouched out of sight.

Ben pushes past the cart as you climb over it, tripping you as you climb over it. He continues on to the alley on the left leaving you to regain your footing. Time slows for you as you run to catch up, the two men from the alley appearing in response to hearing their friends cries.

Ben blocks your view of the man on the left as he surprisingly leaps over the crates, throwing the man off guard and knocking him to the ground out of sight. Your focus now on the man on the right, you watch him raise a sword and point it toward you.

It's not long as you make your advance that the man sees the firearm, dropping his sword as Ben appears from behind the crates with the other assailant in a headlock. Foot traffic, which you now notice had seemed to disappear, pours back on to the streets from the sideways as if on cue but steers clear of you as they walk past.

Ben leaves the two men you with as he retrieves the cart. The man in the frame out cold, he leaves him to rest while he pushes the cart back up the road to you. You notice the wood has splintered slightly where it hit the building.

The men offer little resistance as you hold them at gunpoint in the alley, glancing between the men being shaken down by Ben and the doorframe that held the unconscious third attacker. The rustling of a few coins confirms a little profit for your trouble.

Once Ben finishes tying down the two men you look around for the sword you saw one of them drop. Money being tight you lean down and grab it, walking over to the man lying on the floor and pulling the scabbard from him. Securing it to your own belt and hearing the satisfying familiar sound of the sword.

You've never interrogated anybody before but you look down at the two men sat on the floor staring at the wall and think of what to ask.

This Interrogation failed. Toss them in the cart. Lets go back.

You bark out the first questions that come to your head, the two men ignoring you and staring at the wall until Ben puts a knuckleduster across the chin of one. The darkness of the alley does a good job of masking it but the slight smell and faint glisten of blood is present on the front of his clothing.

You kick at the other man and ask him who they work for. He grunts, looking straight ahead while claiming nobody. "We saw you leaving the smithy and've been following you." "There was supposed to be a another man comin up behind but it seems he didn't have the grits." Laughing he lowers his head. "That's a big fucker you have there."

From the corner of your eye Ben delivers a kick to the head of the man who had finished talking. You move over to the other man who has a gash across his cheek delivering a steady stream of glistening crimson. "How did you know about me and the shipment?" "Shipments come and go all the time but we heard you had a particularly good score on you in that sack of yours. Did'ya open it yet? What's in it?"

You stand up and deliver a final kick to this other man. Turning to Ben you mention the possibility of a fourth man and decide it's time to get back to the smith.

Head to the smith with the cart. State what happened and demand a fair compensation for the extra trouble.

Might be others headed there.

What all'd we lift from the thugs?
>>

>State what happened and demand a fair compensation for the extra trouble.
Eh, we banged up his cart a little.

Plus, I'd say it was assumed this is precisely why we'd be getting paid to move the cargo.
>>
>>36950844
No reason not to haggle. This was a leak on his end over the fuss in that bag we never opened. Dealing with 3 punks raising weapons at us deserves something extra.
>>
>>36950788
After we let the smith know what happened, ask if we can get some discounted armor. Use the cash we made from the commission to pay for it.
>>
>>36950874
Eh. Sure.

Three crowns and a sword. Ben found a dagger.

You quickly leave the alley, double checking the ropes and walking behind Ben as the cart rolls along the cobblestone walkway. The sun overwhelms you as you reenter the bright rays and join the bustling crowds at the market. Darting your head back and forth almost comically you make your way to the smithy.

Parking the cart outside you tell Ben to stand watch while you went to deliver the sack. He agrees, using his mass to block the entirety of the walkway and bouncing his club on his hand. The furnace roars as strong as ever and you watch as the smith hammers away at a glowing red piece of metal.

You walk over to the counter and wait, wondering where the young apprentice may be or what time it even is. Soon enough the man stops his work and walks around the counter to face you. Extending your hand he meets you in a shake as your other hand sets the bag on the counter.

Instantly a smile forms on his face, undoing the leather strap he opens it and you see him disable a small wire before spreading the sack open. Reaching his hand inside he pulls out the large egg-shaped container and hands the sack back to you.

Shocked, you shake the sack and try to figure how many coins are there. Probably close to a hundred you figure, tying the sack to your belt. "So what is that? What's worth 100 crowns on delivery alone? I haven't even told you about the men we fought on the way."

"Probably saw you moving that crate through town. Big target that paints on you in a city like this. Doesn't help that I'm the best smith in the town of course" He says with a wink as he opens the container.

A small, brass orb comes in to view the size of a grape. Beneath it is a flat section of brass not much smaller than the orb. The man wipes his hands furiously on a towel hidden behind the counter and picks the sphere up gently, turning it in his hands. Glasswork comes in to view as he turns it over in his hands

The glass looks familiar but you can't quite figure it out. At least not until he lifted the sphere up to his right eye and smiled at the match. Looking past the thing in his hand you realize one of his eyes hasn't been moving throughout their conversations. "It's about damn time!" He yells. "Keep the change and keep in touch, I need to close now. I hope you understand!"

You're ushered out and begin to walk away as you start telling Ben what just happened. You both decide it would be best to head back to the plot and stay until morning.

Encountering no more trouble you make it back to your land and trudge in to the cobblestone and wood house. Once inside you empty the bags contents on to the table. Dozens of crowns pour out along with an envelope addressed to an Arland Cosgrave with a wax stamp. You set the envelope to the side and count out the coins.

94, a weird number but certainly not a bad haul for your first day.

Good shit.

Been a good run today. Same time tomorrow?

Can we get a rough cost on upgrades to the plot we'll be able to pursue in the future?
>>
>>36951169
Thanks for the thread. Nice read and very vivid.
How much wage can the average grunt like Ben expect? I'm trying to grasp if it's around the 2 coins, 10 or 30. How the inflation is in the setting.

Dangerous work, even the basic stuff of your company, can expect to pay 10GC per day. That's around the minimum for combat work. As you get people you will be able to have passive income supplying you with gold that will sometimes interrupt the main game to do some rolling/deciding.

You can use this link to download the IKRPG rulebook which I will be using as a basis for a lot of my prices.

It was a mixture of brass mechanika surrounded by a glass orb. It comes with a mechanika socket and acts as a fully functional eye

>>36951219
I will be breaking until Saturday at the least. I will post an update on Twitter if I decide to run any games.

>>36951219
I imagine 500-1000 being the cost of adding a building. There will be an option of something that you can use to provide income, more housing for employees, Warjack workshop, etc.

Oh yeah. Duh.

Kudos to the speedy archivist making me feel bad

Don't feel too bad OP. I archive for like 3 different quests and I have pretty good timing for when to archive them. Makes me feel important or something.
