You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Your excursion to Cateno turned out to be a great success. The primary goal of the trip, namely to exterminate the Leviathans that had attacked the town, has been met.. and you were even able to find and kill the one that was responsible for the death of Citrine's parents.

In addition to this, you managed to run into Adrien and are bringing him back to the castle with you.

And there's also the issue of Carina coming with you...

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

"Wow," Carina gasps, "everything looks so little from up here!" she says, attempting to lean over the side of the Wyvern's harness in order to get a better look. In response to this, you find yourself holding onto her even tighter.

Like hell you're going to let her fall off.

"You're not scared to be up this high?" Adrien asks the little girl. "I know I was scared out of my mind the first time I had to ride one of these things..."
"Uh-uh!" Carina shakes her head. "I don't hafta be scared 'cuz Reinhold's here with me!"

It really is heartwarming to see that she has such a high opinion of you... it almost serves to take your mind off the imminent chaos that's sure to meet you once you land. Though you were pretty adamant about bringing Carina back with you, you haven't really put too much thought into what comes after that... or how Luciana will react. OR Marianne, for that matter.

And Adrien being here is sure to bring its own share of trouble. Hell, just thinking about it is giving you a headache.

"Oh hey, is that the lake?" you say, pointing towards a large body of water that you're rapidly approaching.
"It is indeed," Arnaud nods. "...eh?"
"Is something wrong?" Adrien asks.

His question is quickly answered just by looking down at the ground. In addition to the distant shapes of your friends, the lakeside is littered by the carcasses of several red-scared beasts...

The last thing we need is for someone to take our transport out of the air on reflex because they think we're the reinforcements for whatever is going on down there.

It'd be nice to get there quicker, certainly, but we're going to have an extra noncombatant with us so it'd be nice not to just drop right into the thick of it before getting a better handle on the situation.

That said, muh Citrine, so it can go either way.

"...the hell happened down there?" Adrien says, staring at the unlikely scene.
"I don't know," Arnaud growls. "But it doesn't seem as if anyone is hurt..."

Arnaud may -say- that, but you won't feel right until you're actually down there to check for yourself.

"Arnaud, could you land the Wyvern a little ways away?" you ask. "I don't want them to think that we're the same as those..."
"Salamanders," Adrien says.
"Whuzzat?" Carina asks.
"The worst kind of Lesser Dragon," he replies. "They're tough like Leviathans and can fly like Wyverns," he pats the beast that you're riding on, "and they can breathe fire too."

That being said, as best girl as Nico is, I'm still not sure her and Rein are right for each other (though I'm not convinced Luci is either but whatever).
Maybe things would be different if we hadn't bro-zoned Nico so early on. I would 100% have voted to princess carry her after our sparring match, I'm still disgusted with you all that that vote lost.

"C'mon, quit scaring her," you say, turning to Adrien. "They might be scary and all but they're all dead so you don't have to worry," you look down at Carina and hold her tighter.
"'kay," Carina nods.
"And even if they weren't, I'd zap them dead before they got anywhere near you, Miss Carina," Arnaud says, looking back and giving her a thumbs-up.

Doing just as you suggested, Arnaud guides the Wyvern to land over in a clearing that's out of sight of the lake itself. Adiren's the first one to hop down to solid ground, and then he helps Carina down before you and Arnaud finally disembark as well.

It's nice to have your feet on actual ground again.

"I'm going on ahead," you say to Adrien and Arnaud.
"Yeah, I can tell how antsy you are," Adrien replies. "Don't worry, we'll catch up with you."
"Yes," Arnaud nods, "you can leave M-"

Before the old butler can even finish speaking, you lift Carina in your arms.

"Waa!" Carina giggles, apparently enjoying her sudden ascent.
"Er," Arnaud clears his throat, "...are you sure that you really want to..."

Once again, you act before he's able to complete his sentence.

I think probably the intelligent thing would be to explain she was an orphan with no prospects except starving early or whoring late. I mean, what could they actually say to that? I don't think anyone is Monique-level autistic. Where we get trouble is if we try and raise her to break swords.

Except for Rana, I never expect Rana to have any tact, though I doubt she gives a single shit about this scenario.

Fortunately, the trees around here are far enough apart from each other for you to be able to safely use Tailwind without worry of crashing into anything. And you've grown accustomed to your boosted running while carrying Carina after having already done it twice today...

...when you finally make it to lakeside, you spot your friends standing around several corpses of those red lesser dragons that Adrien identified as Salamanders. One of them has a massive hole jutting through its chest, another looks to have been bludgeoned to death, and the last is oddly charred with what looks like molten metal around an open wound.

Realizing that none of these monsters are still alive, you breathe a long sigh of relief.

The next priority is to see about your friends. Over by one of the carcasses, you spot Takamaru, Reya, Valerie and Racquel along with a bikini-clad Rana (why is she wearing that) while Karel and Emilio along with Elena, Sylvie's sisters and Citrine wait by the carriages. And over by the lake, Luciana, Sylvie and Melanie are standing by a distraught-looking Nicolette. It looks like she's talking to Sir Gregory...

Huh, he's here too?

I wouldn't say half - Reinhold would do it anyway I think. But certainly, raise her to break swords while we are at it. I am just identifying a future problem to overcome after we win the first fight. They'll probably want to raise her to be a civilian. If we must we can compromise on maid school, just so long as they realize she will be a combat maid. We can claim it's so we can have someone capable of protecting Marianne when she's in situations improper for a man to be present.

Citrine looks like she's alright for now, but you're really curious as to why Sir Gregory's here. And also why Nicolette in particular seems to be so distraught. And so, you find yourself skidding to a halt at the lakeshore where they're standing.

"Reinhold..." Luciana looks at you with the most relieved smile ever. "...thank goodness you're safe!"
"Hey," Sir Gregory waves at you. "Nice to see that you're..."

All three of them point at the little girl in your arms.

"Uh, who's that?" Sir Gregory asks.
"Er..." laughing nervously, you let Carina back down.
"Umm, I'm Carina," she says, bowing to them. "Hi."
"Hi?" Sir Gregory waves back.

If Nico's upset about noy going to Cateno she should complain about it to Arnaud or Gregory, not hold it against us. We were summoned at the last possible moment and people were endangered.

"......" you glance at the monster carcasses that are littering the area, "...so what exactly happened here?" you ask.
"Salamander attack," Luciana replies. "We were minding our own business on the lake, enjoying ourselves and then they showed up out of nowhere."
"Apparently Emilio was the first one who spotted them," Sir Gregory says. "That kid's got pretty good vision..."

Apparently so.

"But nobody got hurt, right?" you ask.
"No, thankfully," Melanie sighs. "Me, the little girls, Prince Emilio and your sister all hid out in the carriages while KArel took care of one of those monsters all by himself," she says, pointing to the carcass that has the huge hole in it.

You notice Sir Gregory rolling his eyes when Melanie refers to Karel as "he," but you let that one slide.

"Uh... sure," you nod.

You're -pretty- sure what he wants to talk to you about, but right now you're more worried about someone else.

"Nicolette?" you call out to your best friend.
"...hey," Nicolette mumbles.
"Uh, what's wrong?" you ask. "You look a lot miserable than everyone else."
"Her pride was damaged," Sir Gregory says with an exasperated sigh.
"Huh?"
"Nicolette killed that one right there," Melanie says, pointing to the carcass with the burns and metal residue. "Saved Sylvie's life in doing so, too."
"Yeah," Sylvie nods. "I wish you could've seen it, she was amazing."

Now you're even more confused.

"Why would your pride be damaged if you were able to save Sylvie's life and kill one of those monsters?" you ask. "I'd be proud as hell if I was in your situation."
"You killed a sea monster and saved my life," Carina chimes in.
"See, she just made my point for me!"

"Yeah, but I had to break my ONE fucking rule in order to do it," Nicolette mumbles.
"What rule?" you ask.
"The necklace is out of necessity," she says, "but I freaked out when I thought that Sylvie was gonna die and the only thing I could do was cast an attack spell in order to save her," she mumbles. "I was supposed to make Knight while only using lances but I just wasn't good enough where it really mattered."

Yeah, Reinhold doesn't have the time to care for her as she needs to be. Give her to grandma, the castle staff or someone who can.

Nobody (well, nobody sane) thinks that Reinhold is personally going to become daddy and raise her himself, but there are enough child-raising-capable households populated by nice and affluent people in our immediate social radius that someone will certainly be willing to take her in. If for some reason it's an issue Rein has more than enough to pay for her room and board, and I'd bet money that she'll end up earning her keep as some kind of castle-staff-in-training.

Running towards Citrine, you intercept her attempt at a tackle hug with a more gentle embrace of your own. After having spent a good part of your day in Cateno, being able to hug your sister like this again just seems... right. And it's taking a lot of selfcontrol to keep from getting all emotional.

A LOT of selfcontrol.

"Oh my God I was so so so SO worried about you going back to that awful place!" Citrine says as she holds you tightly. "You didn't get hurt, did you?"
"No," you shake you head, "I'm fine. You didn't get hurt when those things attacked here, right?"
"Nope!" she chirps as she finally lets you go. "Both me and the baby are A-okay!"

Thank God.

"And speaking of babies," Citrine turns to Carina, "who's this little cutie?"
"I'm Carina," she replies. "I was living in a box and then those snakes ate everyone up so Reinhold came and saved me and now he's taking me home with him!"
"Oh, I see," Citrine nods. "Reminds me of a certain someone who tried to do the same for us back when we lived in Cateno."

"I dunno what I'll be doing in the long run, but she with me for now at least," you reply with a shrug.
"Well I'm sure that Grandma would be happy to see that you're still following Volker's example even now..." Citrine says, smiling at you.

Aren't Volkers and Rein's styles specifically a more hamfisted/power version of the Family Style? Mostly due to it being developed that way from lack of refined techique

Or was it always a swordbreaking style?

It's been a long time since we talked swords ad sword related accessories.
>>
>>36931309
You're correct on that, Reinhold is using a bastardized version of Volker's style, which itself was a spinoff of the family school because he was too stronk and broke swords all the time.
>>
>>36931265
Imagine if despite the collective effort of Reinhold, Agnes, Adrien, Karel, Arnaud and Gregory Carina turns out to be utter shit at swording.

"By the way," you say, rteaching into your pocket, "here."
"Hm?" Citrine holds out her outstretched hand as you drop a certain object onto it. "What's this?"
"Well," you say, grinning, "I did it."
"...did what?"

Now she's starting to sound kind of concerned.

"You remember the entire reason that I went back to Cateno to start with, right?" you ask.
"W- wait," Citrine gasps. "You can't possibly mean that you actually-"
"Yup," you nod. "The Leviathan with the one eye. I killed it for you, just like I said I would."

"A harpoon..." Citrine gasps. "This is the one that my father used to..."

Citrine falls to her knees and begins sobbing while holding the piece of metal to her chest.

"Reinhold..." Citrine cries, "thank you... thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you..."
"Citrine?" you kneel down so that she's at eye level. "Are you gonna be okay?"

Citrine continues to cry for a good long while, and then pulls you into a really tight hug once she's gotten her fill of that. You're pretty grateful that everyone leaves the two of you alone to have this little moment uninterrupted.

Though you've killed people who hurt her on more than one occasion and protected her from harm more times than you care to remember, this is the first time where it really felt like you actually -helped- her the way that she helped you through all those horrible years. And it's a good feeling.

After a little while, the two of you rise to your feet... and then something else comes to mind.

"...the harpoon and Carina aren't the only things I brought back with me," you say.
"Huh?" Karel turns to you. "What the hell else could you have possibly found back there?"

And as if on cue, you see both Arnaud and Adrien making their way to the lakeside clearing. You guess they took a leisurely walk to get here...

"Y- you're just screwing with me, right?" Karel says, her entire body trembling.
"No joking," you say, "he's over there."

You point to Adrien and Arnaud as they enter the scene, giving the Salamander carcasses a quick lookover as they walk towards you.

"Oh..." Karel covers her mouth. "Oh my god..."
"What's wrong?" Citrine turns to her. "You know Adrien too?"

But Karel doesn't answer, she just continues to stand there paralyzed with fear as her father casually walks over to where the four of you are standing...

...and then Sir Gregory suddenly breaks into a sprint.

"UNcle Gregory!?" Emilio calls out as he hops out of the carriage and starts running just as fast towards the rest of you. "What's going on?"

inb4 Emilio's eventual reaction is realizing this means he is not gay

And suddenly, it's like everyone who was previously involved in their own private conversations has migrated over here and started paying the closest attention possible.

"H... hey Karel," Emilio reaches out to her, his hand wavering. "Uncle Gregory's just messing around, right?"
"shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit" Karel mutters under her breath, completely ignoring her friend.
"...so Karel's actually a chick?" Reya says, pointing at her.
"So Karel's actually a -Princess-!?" Luciana gasps.

That seems to snap everyone back to reality, and the crowd draws back a bit.

"This is all really stressful and POORLY TIMED and all so maybe we could save the interrogations for when we get back to the castle maybe?" you say.
"Y... yes," Luciana nods. "That might be for the best..."
"I can't believe this..." Emilio mutters under his breath as he storms away to the carriage.

Since it doesn't seem like anyone else is going to, you help Karel to her feet.

"I can't fucking believe this..." Karel mumbles. "My life is over..."
"S- so she's really..." Adrien points to her.
"Yeah," she nods. "I'm your daughter."
"Haha..." he places a hand to his forehead. "Ahahahahahaha..." it seems like he's about to faint.

This -is- a lot for both of them to be dealing with all of a sudden.

"W... well, uh..." Adrien scratches his head, "...I'm Raoul Philippe Adrien Granache," he says, extending his hand towards her, "and I guess I'm your father. Uh, what's your name?"
"Karel," she mumbles. "Karel Alysse Granache."

King Therri must be worrying for the sanity of his castle. The royal princesses are multiplying; first one, then three, now four!

I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that bastards are allowed to take the name as a mechanism to prevent the royal family from just fucking everything in sight. Seems like something Granache would do.

>>36932256
We owe him a beer. He was mostly right, at least.

>>36932262
Karel is kind of a unreliable narrator as far as things go, though. Also, her primary objection, IIRC, was to the idea that her mother had got it on with a Married man, not that her conception was illegitimate.
>>
>>36932273
It's probably easier to use a lie detector spell.
>>
>>36932248
Thus far, we really haven't seen any evidence that there is. It could have just been out of respect for Agnes, but even Monique stopped acting so superior once we were accepted into the eschenwald family.

It seems that it's more of a "Noble or Not" system. But, we haven't really been in many situations with die hard nobility by which to judge.
>>
>>36932194
>What the hell are the Legitimacy laws does Karel have any right to claim that name without first being acknowledged?
Bastards are allowed to take the name of their parent, provided that they can prove that they are indeed the offspring of whoever it is that they claim is their parent. This is all they get, they are not included in inheritance processions or anything of that sort.
The name itself can be a benefit though... even if you're the bastard daughter of some noble from a prominent family and a common whore, that lineage alone can open many a door.
However, claiming a name and then bing proven that you're an impostor is a quick trip to the gallows in pretty much any country.
And being a proven bastard bears a special stigma in Marconetti, which is one of the reasons why Karel kept it hidden.
this is related to how celestino rose to the throne, and will be explained soon enough

Arnaud definitely could, though he'd be sorely tempted to spill the beans to the King.

Angelique could as well, for she is a proper princess who understands the importance of discretion. Her husband, on the other hand would give zero fucks and physically carry Karel to Thierri and explain everything regardless of her own wishes. That's just the kind of guy he is.

At worse, we can pull out the "Karel is my cousin so it doesn't count" train of thought.

The lack of actual blood relation is mostly irrelevant, considering the fact that all the other people recognized as our family (Citrine, Grandma) aren't blood related either.
>>
>>36932495

Though "orchestrated" is a big word, considering that Raoul's return was totally unrelated to our choices.

"Grass is greener" syndrome. In some alternate universe lucifags are crying about how she's totally best girl each time she teases us or reveals her evil mastermind tendencies.

Eh, to anyone who isn't inside his head (us), Rein was *clearly* setting things up for a careful, minimal-backlash reveal, which was only accelerated a bit by Raoul's surprise arrival.

It was just Greg's inability to restrain himself that blew the whole thing out of the water.

Remember, he and Karel were pulling this all off under the noses of two whole royal courts, one of which had freaky-good spymasters and the other of which was incredibly paranoid.

*We* know Rein was making shit up as he went, but everyone else won't see that.

He's highly proficient at the technical stuff, but just about anyone can be trained to an acceptable level given time and determination. I'd argue that a compatible personality is significantly more important to being a secret agent, and Archer's personality isn't suited in the slightest.

The only reason he isn't dead is blind luck and the ability to bullshit like a god.

Worst comes to worst, we just need to deploy Elena if Celestino tries to do anything to Karel. I'm disappointed we didn't hear her go batshit over the reveal that Karel is a Swordie Princess, but presumably it was at a frequency that only dogs can hear.

Hopefully we get to see Ariane go into shipping mode after she's done chewing Greg out. Wasn't she teasing Karel over Emilio in the house?

Depends on how much we anons faff about. So do you think masked man has a way to control lesser or perhaps even true dragons? Cause so far we've been it by a rogue behemoth when there shouldn't be one anywhere near us, the Leviathans swarming Cateno, and the Salamander attack on the picnic. all of them attacking us and rampaging around the area all in a shirt time can't be a coincidence.
>>
>>36933742
The Behemoth and the Leviathans I'd blame it on arch thinking they make for excitting opponents, but it's true that it's getting troubling.

What worries me the most is the way the guy behind the attack seems to have unlimited funds. He lost a lot of men launching his assault on Marconnetti for little results and now he comes back with an host of dragons?
>>
>>36933771
Small up front payment, they die they don't get to collect. Odds are if he is the lost prince he subverted the guard via other means(politics) and if he's got magic(we know he does) He could conceivably enslave those salamanders. Sadly if you're good enough with magic in general or only a few fields you can get a way with a lot of shit. I'm just saying all these lesser dragons coming around Granache ripping and tearing means he like has some way to control them. Possibly even True dragons and dragon blooded, which would be a massive pain if he plays that card.
>>
>>36933819
I'm reasonably sure true dragons could never be controlled like that, at least. It contradicts everything arch ever wrote about them being higher than humans on the spiritual hierarchy and would be broken as fuck.
>>
>>36933863
Maybe it has something to do with those slave collars that other Cateno-esque country has then? Make the world see the wearers as non entities.
