Let's get the yuletide evo's going!

This thread's current forecast? Amped up Ice Age 2: Paradise Lost edition

Table of Misfortune: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CKg7H6g3sTO1yVji7iLDAcSfY5GRhlvSHfp5du9WHCs/edit?usp=sharing

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Make your evolutions gradual and realistic
•Don't do a thousand evolutions on a single creature by yourself, let the other Anons try
• Archived threads: >http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Grombworld
Thread 2 got messed up on suptg >https://archive.moe/tg/thread/36761184/
• Stay on topic
• Have fun

So the cycle of ages was temperate, desert, super desert, ice age, super ice age, softening ice age, super ice age again. Right?

Is it just me or does that look an awful lot like a planet being slingshotted out of its orbit by a travelling body with significant gravity? I think a wandering star went by the solar system and the goldilocks planet is now on a gradual horror-spiral that's going to make it a rogue world. Basically, everything is extra fucked. Soon the only source of heat and energy is going to be the very short term geothermal chaos.

>>36915685
We are. But this is fixable.
Mud Pholl soon have heavy competition due to the dwindling survivable land mass they can habitate. Those with rounder, squatter forms are much harder to push and wrestle, and those with thicker tendrils can provide more punishment to invaders. Soon, the bulkiest mud pholl are the only mud pholl left.

In the New ice Age, the Ice breaker Fenishes Rule supreme, developing a body metabolism capable of withstanding sub zero temperatures in the water. They makes their homes , using their horns not just to impress females, but to also lay eggs in complex tunnel mazes within the ice few can find . They begin to change the color of the carapace to camouflage better in their icy enviroment

> Common Name: Red-tailed Snake Fennet
> Scientific Name: Fenneserpentis tuskeegee
> Habitat: Oceanic
> Diet: [unknown*]

The snake fennet develops a detachable tail, like Earth skinks. If grabbed by a predator, it can simply pull off the red section of its body and escape. It also develops a second pair of fins, so that while this red tail is growing back, it will not be immobilized by the loss of the flukes on said tail.

Some earpholls, isolated in the northern continent, instead slowly develop more rings and darker skin. The rings, variable in size and depth, allow a wider range of sounds to be interpreted. Rapid clicks of their mandibles let these Polar Earpholl both better keep warm and create their own sound waves for sensing their surroundings. These critters are highly territorial and will get into (sometimes lethal) wrestling contests in order to keep feeding grounds. Wrestling between sexes will end in coupling or banishment at about an even split.

The highly successful pack hunters, yellow fennets, have slowly drifted to more specialized use of their striking limbs. The phalanges that used to hold their wing membranes have drifted and molded into manipulator pads with two proto-thumbs. When the pack is out hunting, these graspers will pin prey animals that have been pounced from ambush, while the rest of the group slaps, chokes, bludgeons and otherwise assaults the poor creature into death or unconsciousness.

Playfighting among young of this species is consequently extremely dangerous. Those that create a warning signal of contact and submission -- signifying a play loss -- are much more likely to survive into adulthood. Variations of the mating call pushed to a higher pitched, halting trill proves most common.

This particular breed of Pholl slowly mutates a much sleeker body plan for use in the water. Their feelers, whipping and free, are much more capable of sensing the oceanic environment and the fully protected pheromone organ is now one hydrodynamically sustainable lump. The quirk of these at the genetic level is inextricably tied with aggression instincts, however, and these new Caped Pholl prove to be universally and genocidally intolerant of any species that falls into their Uncanny Valley. Older breeds of this line are commonly decapitated and consumed by their progeny.

Some Earphols adapt to a even more predatory role.
Their primitive "ears" improve, allowing them to detect and track sounds better, and their body becomes more compact, facilitating quick bursts of speed.
This phol offshoot hunts by laying in wait, keenly listening to it's surroundings, and charging anything that sounds small enough to be suitable prey.
Their bushy, and rough "fur" lets them hide among the undergrowth relatively well, though due to their own lack of sight, they aren't the best at picking hiding spots.
>>
>>36918006
Forgot one bit.
Their leg tentacles have developed stronger muscles, as well as a primitive, cartilage like structure within them, which lets them support their weight better.
>>
>>36918006
Could you make something similar to this for the northern earphol as well?
>>
>>36918006
I would post a new picture but I really don't think there would be any visible change in the Earphol from this evolution.

With their more advanced ears the Earphol is capable at hearing at a higher pitch than any other living creature on land. By chance, some Earphols develop vocal chords with the ability to produce noises at this frequency. This makes finding mates significantly easier, and because of this the mutation quickly spreads across the species.

Another, non visually distinguishable evolution.

The mating calls of these Earphols (who are due a new name perhaps?) eventually adapted into a primitive echolocation, based on the high frequency shrieks they emit from their vocal chords.
These shrieks are also used for primitive communication between these creatures, mostly related to territory disputes, scaring off other creatures, as well as it's original function, the mating call.

Convergent evolution etc. The polar phols use clicks for echolocation, while these phols use shrieks.

Evolution continues on the mud plains.

The Mudkerp has continued to tack on chunks of detritus and mud to it's body when venturing outside the mound. They will frequently grab larger sticks and rocks to build their mounds more sturdily. The "tusks" of the mudkerp have become more flexible, acting as crude manipulators and graspers.

If attacked while hauling an object the mudkerps will often attempt to bat away their assailant with it. The mudkerps are weak however, and this is not a honed reflex, often they will meet their tiny little demise.

The Nomad kerp has exhibited a small social evolution. They splatter themselves with colors, be it dung, blood, sap or dirt. The colors represent a group affiliation within the horde that lasts until rain washes them away, at which point the individuals cease to recognize their former comrades. On occasion the Nomads will chase a larger animal towards a mudkerp mound.

Now under a direct threat by its random unexplained coloration changing offshoot. The surviving earlier Pherapholl develop several tactics for evading and protecting themselves from the caped.
Begining to travel in schools and packs for protection, Sexual Dimorphism develops between the two genders of the Pheropholl. Females become the detectors, with those develop additional 'whisker-like' pheromone sensors upon their head surviving and become useful at alerting the school to the precense of Caped pholl.
These whiskers allow them to sense pheromones to a much more accurate degree, with their Vomeronasal organ growing slightly to accomidate the extra usage and information.
The males become the fights and protectors, With their mandibles becoming stronger and more powerful. As a result the females mandibles become smaller, as they no longer use them for fighting.

The females also use these whiskers to seek out other older pheropholls and grey pholls for greater protection in numbers. Though the Pherapholls appear to be more prone to be hunter by the caped pholls, thus making the number of Pheropholls in these schools and packs smaller.

Due to the effects of the rage virus. These packs often become hunting parties and the female whiskerered pheropholls direct them towards any nearby potential threat, attacking them with sheer numbers and ensuring that they all eat well.

When someone tries to hijack something a group is doing in order to showboat, fuck that guy. We are better off without FortuneHost, he's a shit drawfag anyway. I'm as good as him and I'm fucking untrained garbage.

And considering there is a literal waifu tit-fish, drawfags inciting drama from the secret chambers of an IRC, and whole lines being radically undone and redone in one post, this whole thing is in death throes anyway. A few anons keep trying to compare themselves to previous evo games, but those games had a lot more rigor and creativity than this one. When wild divergences get erased specifically to make them more similar like in >>36919879 (what kind of complete asshole changes everything about a critter to give it new senses, new gait, and reduce it's most unique feature to a footnote) or >>36917773 then it's truly gone to the pits.

>>36926058
This poster is exactly right. One, maybe at more three people are circlejerking around to add things that make no sense due to nothing more than a critical lack of creative ability. There is no environmental, social, or interspecies pressure for the polar earpholl to make massive changes to its sensory organs, develop multiple new ones, change their body plan, etc etc etc. It's out of nowhere at all. It breaks the flowchart of bare minimum competence.

This >>36927169 is creative and competent. This >>36926341 is creative and sensible. This >>36927736 is pulled right out of someone's ass with the cultist chant of "wouldn't it be cool if."

True polar earpholl, who had no organs or structures that could conceivably turn into heat pits and being covered in material that would be extremely difficult to mutate into light sensitive patches, have a heavy evolutionary pressure for more specialized echolocation instead of a complete abandonment of its niche. Their low, linear bodies turn out to be great at galloping, hopping, and jogging through snow and over ice, and as generations pass their footpad tentacle tips become more bowed out, flattened, and cup-like in order to spread their weight more gracefully and more easily avoid sinking down through the cold surfaces.

Their horizontal, pincer-like mandibles grow throughout their lives, and worn down in balance by the almost constant clicking of various speeds and volumes. Through the apparently miraculous migration of their southern cousins in the evolutionary tree, their hunting grounds grow smaller due to this encroachment of much larger and bulkier beasts. This brings polar earpholl into more conflict, more wrestling, and therefore more coupling even as the southern earpholl convergently mutate bushy white fur and over complex senses for echolocating among the windy flats.

You know, I really didn't agree with you at first, thought you were just here to be an ass, and you are, You have fair and just points. But nobody appointed you sole defender of evo threads, and if they have, I would have hoped you planned to do it with less shit slinging. Maybe this game isn't being played the way you want it. But there's no reason to be so ass blasted, complain, but do so more mildly. I like all your contributions thus far, but you need to be more lax and stop acting like circlejerks aren't all these threads are for anyways.

Gooey and structurally primitive Sat-ellites blend their genetic lines until the point in which any breeding partner could end up with producing any kind of Phantom. The genes expressed are driven mostly by hormones leaked into surrounding waters, with the least populous Phantom types being expressed more commonly in the next generation.

These massive colonies that result grow dangerously in computational ability. Hunting packs for Sat-ellites begin to use baiting tactics, pretending to be alone or injured, and leading those that take the bait into ambush zones where massive amounts of Phantom descend and dissolve their prey with the coordination afforded by the constant screams of the Sat-ellite core. This tactic proves particularly effective against schools, who are much more likely to take the opportunistic nature of the bait provided.

The frozen over seas of INSERT PLANET NAME HERE are rapidly becoming a blood ocean.
>>
>>36928364
This is exactly what I mean, Anon. I did not write any such essay. I don't even know of the existence of such an essay and am currently trying to find it in the last thread. Assumptions about identities will always lead you astray. Concentrate only on what's been actually and openly posted, that's how you stay sane.
>>
>>36928428
It wasn't an actual essay mate, I was mocking your attempts to get us to see the light, and as far as identities, I assume it is the same person because I pray to god there aren't two assholes trying to stop us from having our badwrongfun ignorant of actual common sense and just trying to make cool critters to populate an imaginary world.

Then you best begin praying, because I think you're a hypocritical shit for trying to facetiously call it badwrong fun when it's a small group flagrantly breaking and dismissing the game rules. >>

The resilient, forest fire friendly breed of Bomb Gromb are not unaffected by the trend towards hostility. Those that fill their bladders to capacity, and those with the weakest stable membranes, are able to fling their extremely hard seeds much further than competitors. This also has the nasty side effect of flinging the bullets directly into (or possibly through) herbivores that set them off, or accidentally setting off too-close neighbors that likely have similar genetic lineage.

The mandibles and claws of the digging earphols develop further, as they adapt to their niche. Their back feet also develop similar claws as their front feet, in order to give the creature more solid grip on the soil, as they dig.

Their tusk like mandibles are also apt at mauling prey in addition to just digging, making these creatures capable of bringing down prey above the ground too. Their clawed feet gives them a firmer foothold as they run, which in turn, making them better runners too. All in all, these critters are dangerous to both beings above, and under the ground.

Okay, I am one of the chart fags, and as soon as I get the time, I plan on going back through and putting a number under each critter to signify which thread the evo comes from, that way some of the tail ends of lines that don't get evolved will be easier to evolve without having to archive dive. You guys still don't fucking know how this game is played?! Please stop doing this, it would benefit all our experiences. I don't mind that you evolve a buttload of stuff, but don't keep evolving the same creature.

Also, you guys made new thread again before updated charts were finished. This way the game will come to an end, as only a few creatures will get evolved, some of them will be forgotten and new players will have a hard time joining in.
>>

>>
>>36930826
Early in the game, we agreed that when people were solo-evolving, we would call them out on it so that the game stays enjoyable. Seeing the list of posts that have gone by, you can't disagree that it was high time to call the Pholl-train to a stop.

And this game is also a group effort, if you only create evolutions, while leaving the hard stuff like making the evolution charts and size charts to other people, this game will die.

My tits are calm, I just wan't you to think about all players and not just yourselves. It has been going smoothly for a week now, don't ruin it.

as the micra Kerps expand their hives, and their enemies adept, mimicry becomes less and less effective - The females pseudo-plant apendages gain muscles and are repurposed into (still poisonous) grabbing tentacles, which they no longer show in plain sight, but instead hide near water holes and similar areas where their prey would gather, and hold them down, paralyzing them and sucking them out as usual.

The gene that alters the females tentacles, also gives the guards an asymetrically big right claw - they can use them as shoving instruments or shields in conflicts with other hives

The Herculean Kerptaur continued to grow in size and ferocity through the rage period and began hunting down nests of the flying fennets. It's singular eye's pupil which improved to better identify threatening packs of fennets from passing floating grombs becomes easy to distinguish and plays a crucial role in it's new hunting methodologies.
Also of note is the development of a fourth digit on each hand. This opposing digit allows the Kerptaur to grip onto things better, when climbing to attempt to find fennet nests to destroy.

Due to the continued cold temperatures and flourishing environments of the snowball kerp. Many have grown much larger, hunting and preying on the various larger animals that step on them whilst buried.
Some mudkerp have taken the opportunity to build their mud homes atop the snowball kerp as a defense mechanism.
Not only does the snowball kerp keep them moving and away from nomad kerp. It also eats any aggressive nomad mudkerp that do find them whilst in its buried ball form.
The snowball kerp have found that having the mudkerp's home upon it's back results in more prey approaching it whilst buried and tend to allow the hives to stay on their backs.
>>
>>36933505
okay, so snowball kerps are about the size of a limo? Based on the size of the mudkerps(about 4 inches) and their nests, the snowball should be very large. This of course means that their predators are huge. Maybe there is less gravity on our deathworld?

This is hugely non-canonical. It conflicts in a big way with every single size chart done. Besides...
>gradual and realistic
and the theme of the environment right now is crazed hostility. It's not the right pressure to evolve mutualism.

Rule of cool is always inferior to the actual rules of the game.

>>36930578
That rule is against making pet critters. There are at least five people focusing in on the earpholls. It's legit. The same thing has happened to flying fennets and air grombs before.

>>

No.
Go back and evolve some other species that havent been touched in a while
>>
>>36934061
There are a lot of creatures that haven't been changed in the latest event. Its kind of early to be thinking about another event roll.

The end of the tree creatures should at least get one a piece.
>>
>>36934070
I want to, but I can't think of any evos for the life of me. Well, there's always more muscles and bigger weapons, but come on, where's the fun in that?
>>
>>36934086
Think about what double ice age means for each creature.
What their new threats are (even beyond the environment only) and what their opportunities are.

Then think about what mutation would have given them enough of an edge to survive it/ take the best advantage of it.

Until consciousness is developed thats generally the path for evos I think.
>>
>>36934086
Cant think of any evolutions?
Take an old evo and think of way that the current weather (VERY COLD) and the increased hostility could change it.
Or just move some body parts around slightly.
Everythings supposed to be gradual.
>>
>>36931681
You didn't actually draw plates under the world and bother moving them in the same direction constantly. Did you? This looks random as fuck.

>>36932770
Keep in mind that when something fills it's niche perfectly >it does not need to evolve<. There is absolutely no mechanism or reason to. Things like sharks and leeches and kelp haven't changed much for millions upon millions of years, through countless ages, because they accidentally hit on a really good solution. Most species of ant are extremely similar as well, for example. Diversity for diversity's sake results in unnatural and boring bullshit. To get to really wacky and meaningful results, you follow the environments. You evolve only when there is pressure to, from things you've already got.

The problem with these threads is all rooted in the same cause. It's people not thinking through what they're doing.

>dragging monsters and jokes from old threads into this one
People not thinking what they're doing. Not taking the two seconds to realize how that kills creativity here and biases changes towards what's already been done. Leaning on things outside of the game causes derivatives, even if it's just joke images. The game having it's own gag pics is better than constantly reposting things for last year or whatever.

>rule of cool or gag evolution for its own sake
People not thinking through what they're doing. Tits on fish, complex structures from nowhere, hijacking lines. Turning a community game into a personal farce undermines the whole concept and drastically lowers verisimilitude.

>taking things offsite and creating cliques
People not thinking through what they're doing. The death of literally every group endeavour in 4chan's history is trying to take it off of 4chan. The community becomes a fraction of the size and defaults to echo chamber behavior, with all of the same identity politics that plague forums but are missing here. It kills enthuasiasm and stops the flow of content and new idea.

>>
>>36934099
Consciousness as an end goal is absolutely stupid. The only reason humans are as adaptive as they are is because they were already upright, which takes a lot of brain power, plagued with many predators, which takes a lot of brainpower, had mitten-like manipulators, which takes a lot of brainpower, and were omnivorous, which lends a lot of growth to high energy structures like the brain. Add in the fact that the weather and environment were rapidly and constantly changing through extremes, and evolutionary pressure stops being on pure instinct and emotional response as in with everything else in the world but in pattern recognition and adaptive re-analysis in this one lightning-strikes species.

Most things are going to overspecialize. Bizarrely powerful venoms, extreme dependence on a mobility feature, convoluted reproductive cycle. That kind of thing. Sapience isn't an end goal. It's a fluke. It's what happens when a very small and brain-heavy group is put into a situation that is remarkably unstable.

>>
>>36934145
Tool users can arise, as can social transmission, without sapience or technological adaptability. There are many tool using birds, even remarkably clever ones like crows. Colony insects and primates show societies without showing self-reflective tendencies. Most planets probably wouldn't have a sapient species for any significant amount of time for a great many reasons, regardless.
>>
>>36934169
good job, you have proven to me that there is, in fact, mimicry. well done.

maybe you should evolve the micra kerp? Because as it is, it's most developed strain doesn't use mimicry.
>>
>>36934086

Any sea creature save bottom feeders, for example, could use increased predetation from phantoms as a pressure method.

For example a creature could develop a method to hide from vibration pings from Satillites or just leave less of a movement footprint. I was thinking of using this somewhere but I don't have a lot of time to draw.

Or perhaps take advantage of there being large blocks of ice around to develop a new habit like the Ice Fens

Flying creatures are going to have a lot of issues with keeping warm in general, perhaps they also have problems finding new prey since everything is dying out.

More muscles bigger weapons only really works out when the creature and it's threat are close to each other in skill and strength anyway.

>>36934145
I wasn't trying to say that consciousness is an end goal (though it is where evo games normally phase into the next stage), I was just trying to say that until consciousness exists, evolutionary developments are going to be a result of pressure/opportunity providing a method for a mutation better suited to handle the situation rising to prominence

A creature develops powerful venom -> the ones that can either avoid it, defeat it without taking critical damage, develop a resistance, become unattractive to attack, etc, are the ones that survive long enough to breed and that line continues. Ones that did not develop a way to lessen the impact die out or simply become lesser.

At least, thats the way I always understood it.
>>
>>36934225
How nice! You announced it as the most developed strain simply because you reduced it's unique features to cookie cutter bullshit and moved around your goalposts so you wouldn't lose a petty argument. You must be real proud of yourself. It's easy to be proud when you have no self-awareness at all.
>>
>>36934227
Just because someone has done something before does not at all mean it must be done in the future. If other evo games did sapience for it's own sake, that is their mistake and there is no reason to repeat it.

Let's say that the True Micra Kerp lives in southern regions and the Grabber Micra Kerp up north or something.
Does that work for you?

It's a fucking game, sheesh, have some fun while you're at it.
>>
>>36934307
Hahaha! Let me clue you in on a little secret. If someone is mad, it means nothing to their argument or content. And being mad is not a prerequisite to calling someone out. I hope you remember these facts in the future so you stop embarrassing yourself in such a simple, childish way. Hyperbolic language like "extreme extent" just reflects badly on you, gentle newfag.

Your claim was that mimicry was a dead end. That it does not persist. That was proven false, so you narrowed the claim to that it's a dead end or not done in predation. That was further proven false, as it is fairly common practice among predators and prey alike. So your new claim was that it wasn't even the nature of the argument. Your goalposts have loose wheels in a stiff breeze.

Me criticizing poor behavior in the game does not stop me from also playing it. Most of the ones in this thread are my changes, even. More fallacious garbage from a mental incompetent.

The landbound fennet uses the remnants of its fins to slide around, but finds that often upon the slippery ice surface covering much of the land it does not provide the necessary grip or range of movement, They slowly develop back legs over the course of generations as the fins continue to shrink.

Pretty big leap here, but I'll hope you'll all allow it as it's part whats distinguishing this line from the other landbound fennets.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here anon. I never said we should be aiming for sapience or that it should be developed.
I never said that this game should follow what happened in others.

I just pointed out that X is generally the method unless Y happens. Following that because Y happens X would no longer be the method.

In this case, sapience would change the method of advancement for a strain because they could now decide how to improve(using tech etc) where those without are still chained to happenstance.

The landbound fennet uses the remnants of its fins to slide around, and those with the best range of motion are slightly less often the prey of the much larger and more suitably adapted land animals. Their powerful rear fins are adapted best when their bristles grip at the ice and trash the creature forward.

The Land Fennet has a rather hard time finding food in the harsh frozen climate of the area where it made landfall. The few plants that are around are frozen solid and difficult for the fennet to eat.
To counter this, it's mouth hardens and forms into a sharp rudimentary beak shape, able to bite into and eat the frozen vegetation.

Polar earpholl, with their much more common wrestling, evolve directly to compensate for it. Males develop thicker, larger manes to intimidate rivals and protect their throats during battle. Females in general get larger than the males, to better control when they mate and with what partners. And both edge towards a rotated pelvis, the better to batter an opponent with the legs, protect their reproductive abilities in combat, and bound through the snowy plains.

It is now common for polar earpholls to pin each other down by the limb with their pincers and rake the back legs against the underbelly until submission is achieved.

None of the earlier evo games had problems like this, precisely because instead of having a self appointed rules lawyer constantly instigating arguments with other players, and attacking them and their creations, and pushing away other players, in earlier evo games, people acted civil, co-operated, and fostered a sense of jovial community, whose first and foremost goal was to have creative fun.

None of the earlier games had any problems with references to other evo games (because back then, it was an evo game community, composed of numerous evo games and their players), or joke evolutions, as the community wasn't composed of autistic spergs like you.
In fact, reading the earlier threads of this evo game, nobody seemed to mind the references and jokes until the last last few threads, where some fucktard started bitching about them. These threads have gone downhill ever since.

>>36937361
Those arguments basically boil down to opinions and clear lack of inexperience with evo games.
None of the supposed problems presented in that post, were problems in other evo games in the past, and none of them need to be problems here either, unless they are made into them.
People just need to realize that these sort of games are for fun, not for pointless, creativity killing internet arguments that accomplish nothing else but killing this damn game.

In any case, I'd love to contribute more to this thread right now, but real life has kept me busy this day, and now it is my time to go to sleep.
