The streets are alive with noise. Vehicles and pedestrians mingle with car horns and shouted profanities under the unblinking eyes of the traffic cameras. The shutter clicks and the view zooms to a human in a hooded jacket, bundled up from the harsh cold caused by the shadow of Gemini Minor hanging frozen above the city.

The figure moves into the tunnel of a shuttle station where trains run to and from the space port at the edge of the city. The figure hops over the automated ticket booth and continues to a tram. A smart-ad blinks its camera as he passes.

“Hey, Ryan, you look thirsty.” It says in synthesized voice as an animated hologram of a carbonated drink pours itself into a glass in the air. He ignores it as he enters a tram and the doors slide shut.

Theseus sends you a ping.

During the disassembly of Lyle's suit, you found an interesting layer of dense fibers that are extraordinarily resilient to kinetic damage. You have it set aside to have your thinkers take a closer look at it later.

[New adaptation unlocked]

>Ballistic carapace
This dense layer of fibers is designed specifically to absorb high speed shrapnel and shock waves associated with explosive damage. It is highly effective against explosive and moderately effective against kinetic damage.

New research unlocked

Ballistic armor
Very fast
A scaled up application of the ballistic carapace to use on ships.

Bulkhead
Fast
Filling space on ships normally reserved for tactical modules with super dense armor of varying types drastically increases a ship’s durability in combat.

Your drones continue to examine the data recovered from the Union research lab. A number of short and erratic logs from Seiner. He reappears on the next log, this time wearing civilian garb in what appears to be an apartment. The sounds of traffic is heard outside a window that offers a stunning view of a graffitied brick wall.
"I think I got a bite!" He says, ecstatically. "I still knew a few people in the capital. I didn't really have strings to pull, but I managed to dangle one out until a big enough fish took it. A parliament rep by the name of Killinger. An old dog, been around for years now, and he's a tory favorite." he takes a sip of a drink in a can. "Bit extreme, honestly, but he's got a reputation as a real statesman, he's promised me samples, and plausible deniability. I promised him..." He looks down. "His legacy, I suppose. If there's even a link between the two." He looks back into the camera again. "And I know there is! I've made too many sacrifices along the line just to give up."

You watch as Seiner takes out a number of papers and sifts through them. "I have finished my first paper on the subject, it should be heading in for peer review soon. Hopefully I'll be able to get some interested researchers from it." He reaches to the camera and the feed cuts out.

"I don't know if I should be happy or pissed." Seiner looks like a mess. His glasses are smudged and his hair is greasy and uncombed. A clock in the background shows the time as 4 in the morning. "The contact Conrad sent me says his agent is late, and that he's never late. Got a report of an attack, or some infection, he doesn't know what to make of it." He is pacing the room. "I don't know what else to do, the lab has already been assigned, and we're bringing it up to full operation within the week. I can only assume that either this agent blundered into something, which this broker fellow says just doesn't happen, or these buggers end up being more of a threat then I assumed. Maybe Gray was right all along, maybe they are more advanced then they say, or hell, maybe we just had a translation error, not the first time it's happened."

He runs his fingers through his hair and sighs in exhaustion.
"Ah... oh, and get some milk, eggs, bread- whole wheat, none of that processed garbage." He turns off the camera.

Drones with hypodermic needles. We don't need any, IIRC.

>>36910599
Yes. 1 shock trooper can give buffs to 20 warriors.

I propose the following military expansion:
Warriors; 1000
Shock Troopers; 50
And then Thorn Launchers to outfit them all.
(We should consider making a burn-proof carapace to make special drones that can act as a flame-thrower/acid spraying corps)

>>36910630

>>
>>36910630

>>
>>36910647
Honestly, their primary advantage was lost when your standard warriors were modified to have wings, but you could upgrade the shock troopers with heavy carapace or a layered combo if you wished.
>>
>>36910577
I think we should lay some large ones to handle large creatures, But the main reason I want to lay so many is utilizing the Cybernetics we could take workers and turn them into the type we need like gill workers or etc instead of laying a new drone and when no longer needed we can remove the costly bit to keep cost low.

>>
>>36910675
Don't they provide a control bonus to nearby warriors? That seems to be their main use.

Although giving them an additional carapace to make them more resistant to energy weapons would be a good idea.
>>
>>36910675
Eh, I dont think they were ever that great. Too much crap thrown in and too little gotten out of it. Probably better of just making a drone for every situation.

>>
>>36910675
Could we utilize are regeneration tanks to turn them into regular warriors? I'd be up to do that.
>>
>>36910703
Sniffers offer the same bonuses to those around them via senses.

>>36910675
Please no. Let's just start from scratch when we decide to make a heavy carapace medium drone.
>>
>>36910682
As long as we can modify drones with them; then I'll vote yes.

>>36910721
Maybe we should rebuild them all as Sergeant drones?

I'm thinking:
As a warrior plus:
Quantum Brain 4N
Acoustic Moderate 1N
Ballistic Carapace ?N ?M

This makes our Sergeant drones cost 15N 10M; plus whatever nutrients and minerals are from the ballistics.
Their primary purpose is to act as a way for our warriors around them to do slightly better, without tying up our thinkers.
>>
>>36910652
The camera flicks on again to see Seiner in a white washed room filled with various research equipment.
"They just arrived." He says. "We've been getting a wealth of data, or at least I am. We're slowly eliminating every possible method of communication, until eventually only one is left. Then I just might be able to convince someone to take a look at Earth." He clicks his pen and writes down several things on a notepad. "One is a speaker caste, same as the one we saw but potentially a different one, not sure and no real way to tell. It seems to remember our interactions on the planet but that could be from a social memory or just really good second hand stories. The others are apparently a worker caste, like the ones we saw in the camp." He clicks his pen again and puts it down. "It's a shame about Lee, I suppose. Conrad's plan B didn't exactly go down according to plan, but he is very good at crisis control. If it weren't for that bombing he probably would have gotten out once the media buzz died down." He rubs the stubble on his chin and adjusts his glasses. "Price of progress I suppose. But it does offer a good warning. Xeno Formicidae are formidable, and I still have no idea how a queen develops. Hell, it's possible the social caste is a kind of adolescent queen, or even the workers themselves. If even one were to get on a Union world... and if they are advanced. Well, theories for testing, I suppose."

The camera cuts out. It's the last of the logs, with only the audio log remaining, dated years ago and given the simple title "Luna".

Warrior +:
Quantum brain, 4N
Thumper, 5N 10M
2x Combat Carapace 3N 10M (Assuming we can stack carapaces; otherwise ballistic)
Average warrior is 10N 10M

So a sergeant would be 22N 40M and cost 11 to upkeep.

You play the audio file and a loud beep plays with a crackle of static.
"This is the Seiner residence, leave a message after the tone." The voice is similar to the Seiner you know, but not quite. An even older voice comes through afterwards.

"Hello, son? Steven, please, pick up." There is an audible exhale. "I suppose you're working, I always loose track of the time outside of Sol. You have no idea what I had to go through to get this Q-link in the middle of a war.
"Look, son, I know we've had our differences. You think I'm a traitor and you have every right to hate me, but at least hear me out. Let me explain why."

There is a click and the voice of a young child comes through. "Grandpa, dad says you're not supposed to call."

"Adam! Adam, how long has it been?"

"Dad says you've been on the moon since the war started. He said you've been helping Earth."

"That's, true. Yes. But we found something here. Buried."

There is a pause, and the child speaks. "Like buried treasure?"

The old man laughs. "Yes, yes exactly, but this isn't just gold coins or holo-maps. It's alive, you see, and it's very old and very wise. I've been trying to learn all I can from it. You see it speaks with thoughts, not words, and it can do other things with thoughts too."

"Like what?"

The old man chuckles and continues. "Lots of things, but what's important is that I tell someone about it. I need someone to know what's here, because I don't think the Confederates are going to last much longer, and I can't let this fall into Union hands. Do you understand?" His voice is growing more stern. "This is very important."

"Ok. Should I tell dad? He's at work now, the lab people called him in late again."

"No, no. I suppose it's better he not know. But you need to know what's here, even if nobody else does, even if nobody believes you, you need to remember. It needs to be found again."

Someone can be heard in the background.

The call ends with a click.

Is this a good moment to perhaps spill the beans to Theseus about the black crystals and whatever? I'm sure he's figured it out mostly, but perhaps he doesn't quite understand the scale of the threat this presents.

Does anyone not want to do this? I know we've been kind of holding out on him in the hopes of exchanging tech beneficially, but we're going to need a lot of research to get the God-gun working, and Theseus is going to be the greatest help in this area.

Does anyone have any more dissenting opinions?

Perhaps we should float the question by Theseus by asking a disconnected entity (the one in the Clarke?) "what would you the Unity do in the face of imminent danger?" and if he's ready to commit to war, I don't see a point in holding out any longer.

Well there's a design on the 1d4chan talk page called "Stealth Operator."
>>
We really need to get our races together and gathering allies, get some commitment. The Cepth are our enemies. Theseus is looking like a definite ally. The humans either need to be allied with, "Adopted", or gotten out of the way. We don't need to be worrying about them when the black pawns come. (That's an idea for a derogatory term for the cepth, "Pawns.") And we need to figure out what's going on with the other races.
>>
>>36911353
Hm, so I guess we'll float the idea of "what would Unity do in the face of absolute warfare?" to a de-networked Theseus, and ask for more information about Long Island.

"What do you know about this place?" You ask.

Theseus sends a report. It is much of what you know from your continuous observation of Tau Ceti. It is a space city often used as a port for ships moving in and out of the system, as well as a known den of smugglers, thieves, and mercenaries, although it has managed to avoid being known too much for its shady side by supporting a bustling casino and resort focused tourism industry. It is also the listed billing address of "Forrester", Lyle's alias used by his bank account, with a listed address as a docking port on lease from a "Jerry's Interstellar Garage."

"What about your doubt? Is there a chance it could be false?"

"Always." He says. "Detected bone structure is 98% identical, iris data is a match, and tissue holds a 17% difference, within acceptable deviation due to age or dietary changes. Hair color and skin tone were changed slightly, but that too was within acceptable parameters. It should be noted that medical technology does allow for alterations in appearance, but I have no way to differentiate such fakes from authentic facial structure."

On Earth Lyle has nearly fallen asleep as the workers continue to dig, the thoughts of danger from the natives far from his mind. Your illusionary image wakes him from his light sleep.
"You may need to leave soon. How soon could you be ready?"

He opens one eye. "Already am. Got a pair of nutjob prims in my hold and more bugs in the back seat then a first year warp drive design."

You find Elizabeth with the other humans in the common area, sampling some of the food provided by your workers. She detects your mind as the speaker moves to the doorway of the prison area and she quickly excuses herself.

"It's sweet. Not bad at all, honestly. I should be going now though."

Someone shouts out as she leaves. "You've been in talks with those things for weeks now, you should try spending time with other humans on occasion."

She meets your drone at the door as if flexes shut behind her. "You needed something?"

"It is regarding Theseus."

"Yes." She says, "You've had decent dealings with them before, what happened?"

"The hive has been in contact, and has cooperated on numerous occasion, and wondered if you wished to speak with him."

"I- what? No no, he's probably too busy, I mean."

"Theseus is virtually infinite in his attention."

"Well. I'm busy, I mean."

"You have finished your research efforts of the day, it is your scheduled eating cycle."

You send a thought to Theseus, changing the topic. "You spoke of a Doctor Vaughn once before, what do you know of this human?"

Theseus halts for a moment in confusion. "She was a part of the project which created the first instance of my intelligence. What more do you wish to know?"

"What else do you know?" You say simply.

He pauses as data streams back and forth through him and Zero One. "It is listed among those killed in what the Union now calls the Raligha Incident. I cannot confirm if she was aboard the USV Hope when it was destroyed, but she was listed as a member of the ground team."

Memory retrieval would require a roll. The head is dead as a doornail, but it is properly preserved by your pod so that said retrieval is not a pressing matter. Keeping it alive would be possible, if the head were alive, as it is cloning and memory transference would be needed.

"You will be pleased to know that she is alive, and has been assisting the hive for some time. Would you like to speak with her?"

"Humans are inefficient, she is likely busy."

"She is not."

"They are forgetful creatures, she likely hardly remembers her time at Chandra."

"She has not forgotten."

Theseus seems to sit in silence for some time as Zero One churns on potential responses. You eventually break the silence.

"The hive will relay a connection."

"Very well." He says.

Your speaker chitters. "Theseus requests to communicate. Follow."
Your speaker moves to Elizabeth's own sleeping area, heavily modified in the time she has been here with numerous grown furniture and what has served as a computer, a layer of mimetic skin pulled tight across a wall with a keyboard of bone and chitin. It connects to your thinkers to assist in research efforts, and in this case, displays Theseus's communications.

She walks to the keyboard and slowly types out her message.
"Hello."

The text forms along the screen as darkened skin, and a new line appears.
"Hello, Dr. Vaughn. What is your status?"

Elizabeth stifles a laugh.
"Strange. Made a new friend. You have been busy."

Your speaker leaves the room as the two increase the speed of their typing, and you turn your attention back to Earth.

"What do you know of Long Island?"

Lyle opens his other eye and turns to look to you, and promptly squints his eyes shut as the illusory shadow you cast fails to block the harsh sun. "Damnit." He grunts as he flicks his visor closed. "Well it's prob'ly the closest thing I have to a home. Usually head there for repairs. Know a guy named Jerry there who can fix something without peeking, if you get me."

>>36912404

Simple communication isn't the issue. There's a loophole in Union diplomatic law that allows humans to act as representatives to their government on behalf of foreign governments they are citizens of. This law was drafted with the intention of allowing diplomats to interact between human governments, but was not strictly worded enough to preclude our needs.

To interact with their government in any official capacity, it's either having our own human agent or having one assigned to us, which would mean our representative serving Union interests.

Hybrids, if discovered, would most likely be deemed inhuman. Because, well, they are. Drones don't even begin to qualify.
>>
>>36912651
You reach out and flip the switch to the shutter, or in actuality his own hand reaches to the switch, but the illusion is quite potent. "You are needed to find someone there by the name of Ryan Lee. He is not to be harmed."

Lyle scowls as he tilts himself out of his hammock. "Could use some repairs there anyhow. My baby's more scrap then hull at this point. I mean it looks like you have things covered here."

A worker scuttles by, dropping a pile of refuse on the shore before diving back into the water. Another pair move off to retrieve the captive locals, who have each been given medical care and kept sedated within the Angel's medical bay. They are quickly brought out and your workers make to carry them to the repairing corvette.

"In any case, I'd like to think of myself as rather good at finding people, and I can call in a few favors around Gemini. Got a few good friends there."

Eh, the latter two just muddy its mission profile.

So, could we lay flies with explosive suicide pouches in them to like, sabotage computers or maybe as like mobile breaching charges? Do you guise think that would be cool or doable? I think it'd be pretty useful.
>>
>>36912945
>>36912951
basic warriors are only 10N 10M. I wish we could lay a "base" that in turn grows flies. would be nice for longer term recon and we wouldn't have to pay for each one. Dunno how feasible it is though.
>>
>>36912951
The best part of it all, ignoring thermal vision(since we don't know the cost).
>>36912945

1 honey pot

>Lay 15 flies and send them to Tau Ceti via pod.

Your flies move back to the Angel as Lyle enters and starts up the engines. "Ok, hard part's getting off this rock in one piece, then we can make our way out and cut the cloak once we hit the... whatever the fuck you call that drive." He runs his hands along a number of switches as the system comes online and the ship heaves itself into the air.

"Let's play some dodge ball."

Please roll 1d100, best of 3 to exit Earth space.

Most are at the hive. 10 were sent with him 4, then split off to the Tadega lab, and have been taken back to the hive.

I remember the early days when people called Lyle's ship "Hal's Angle".

Fun times.
>>
>>36913037
I don't know if this is good or not.
But, if that true, wouldn't the fly be cheaper or are we just gonna go with total cost now?
>>
>>36913058
My understanding is: it should be a bonus after adding everything up; don't abuse it to get free additions.
>>
>>36913058
I believe QuestDrone is saying that the intention of rounding down is to not penalize the players, not to reward them. If we always deliberately take it into account to cram as much onto them as possible while designing small drones then we're kind of subtly messing with reality in a way that doesn't accurately reflect the reality of the game space.

Why does a fly have an Oxygen recycler? They shouldn't be in a vacuum at any point. Radiator tubes I assume are to reduce the thermal footprint?

>Radiator tubes I assume are to reduce the thermal footprint?
Yup, the recycler is in case of there being no oxygen or if they are in a toxic environment.
do you think we should give it protection?

You watch as the ship accelerates into space and quickly hits the debris field. Lyle jerks on the controls to avoid the back half of an ancient cruiser and spins the ship as the hulk collides with a shattered troop carrier and sends bulkheads and scrap flying in all directions. A fist sized chunk of metal impacts the ship and sends it into a tumble, and as Lyle stabilizes it near the edge of the field he watches as the Angel's radio drifts away on the scanner.

"Damnit!" He shouts, and the ship vanishes in a blink of light.

In Tau Ceti the Angel appears, tumbling end over end as it still reels from the impact. Lyle takes several moments to recover after steadying the ship, and then switches the comm from radio to laser. A small turret unfolds from under the hull and points itself to Long Island as he hits several numbers into a screen.

"Jackob, call Dillon and meet me at the grease trap." He clicks another switch and the laser fires a concentrated stream of data with the encoded address needed to find its way. Lyle looks to the empty navigator's seat where you appear to be. "See, I actually do have friends."

>>36913058
Add up everything, then add in size modifiers, then round down if applicable. It's just to avoid keeping track of fractions of a resource unit, and rounding up would be less fun. It's possible some drones were added up improperly during design, and if so I will fix them as soon as possible.
>>
>>36913141
It's so tiny protection seems pointless. The conductive carapace is the only one that might possibly actually offer any benefit in any situation, and these things are basically disposable despite their pricetag. If they get spotted, nothing we can equip them with realistically helps their survivability.
>>
>>36913141
The recycler and tubes seem like overkill for disposable units, especially when they are a quarter of the total price, but it's not a big issue unless we start using them in bulk.
>>
>>36913160
Actually the protection could make it really difficult to kill for cheap kinda like the ronclad Beetle. A real life bug with a shell so hard bug collectors have to use a power drill to break the carapace to pin them.
>>
>>36913152
"Who are these people?" You ask, your drone already dredging the depths of his memory for the answers. Jackob was a Talgoan born who moved away the moment he could and quickly became involved in the industry of contraband and illicit security, often hired to make sure deals go smoothly. Dillon was a Geminese native and a member of a government anti-terrorist task force, although the division was not officially recognized by any authority, and often worked closer with the terrorists then with police. They had known eachother for years after their individual jobs collided in a spectacular fashion that left an apartment block in flames, and is one of the main reasons Lyle was forced to change the name with which he makes and receives payment.

The Grease trap was the nickname of a local bar not far from Lyle's port.

He simply looks at you. "Is it really that hard to picture me on good terms with someone?"

"Yes." You say, he finishes punching in the approach to Long Island and it begins to grow into view soon enough.

At 6 am I think we should call it for tonight here, although I'll take any last minuet votes you wish to discus.

The Engram is made of Skyl who made their own. Seems like a decent compromise to me. Skyl-derived personalities for the Skyl to get them started. Next generation can be entirely their own thing. It's how the Skyl did it after their rebellion, except not even so 'natural' as this would be.
