>>
>>36883887
Wait, Ithought we gave them armors?
>>You hand Henry the armor made from Alpha Dire Wolf pelts, a full shirt of leather and fur armor. Two thick pieces of leather cover the chest, studded with brass to hold it in place. Small hardened leather scales cover the upper arm, over a piece of conditioned and softened fur. A small fur cape covers the back plates, the wolf head on the right shoulder. A small metal wolf head hides a buckle on the belt. Henry smiles, thanks you, and replaces his basic armor with the Wolfsbane Armor.

Next, the man forms light armor from the Mantis carapaces. You hand it to Emily. The brown chitlin has been polished to a rich nutty brown, and formed into strips. These strips overlap, like Chris's lorica segmentata. Small pieces of green gemstone, made from the Mantis Jewel, line the shoulder pieces. Small spines from the arms tip the shoulders, pointed out from her neck in cascading lines. A rigid turtleneck made from chitlin covers her throat, a large green gem at the sternal notch. Emily turns around, and unequips her armor. She quickly replaces it with her new Mantis Segmental Armor.

>>
"How far have you guys gone from the town of beginnings?" You ask the trio of girls.
"Just to the edge of the forest. Thats where Machi got Nadasa, we were grinding there and stopped for lunch." Yuki says, her steel shining in the sunlight. It's about April, from what you can figure out. The months are named differently, but theres no way you would forget the time in California when you went surfing. The weather was almost exactly like it is now.
"How 'bout we go to the next town over? We could grind to get your levels up." After some debate on if it's safe to stay outside the city at night, everyone agrees to the proposed action.

You walk slowly on the road, following the herd of people going off to grind. The herd slowly dwindles as people reach their desired hunting grounds, breaking away to grind in the grass. Thirty or so people remain on the road for the whole day, each in their own little groups. As you walk, you discuss battle strategy. Machi has been switching as the tank back and forth with Yuki as the main damage sponge.

At eight, you pass the "Y" intersection, that decides which town you go down. On the left, the road points to a lake and the island town Horunka. On the right, the road cuts a path in the forest towards Tolbana.

Horunka is, technically speaking, a lower level location than Tolbana. But, seeing as we've already cleared the content in Tolbana, we may as well go to Horunka.

We only did one quest from tolbana, we picked up the purple dye quest and that's it. Just easier to farm for mobs near it and stay at inn than get jumped.
>>
>>36884342
> Chris and Henry are level 4
> Yuki and Tori are 3

The primary case that was made is that we didn't want to risk the "newbies"' lives, but they're not really that new, nor are we especially experienced at the game compared to them; we are only slightly more knowledgeable in some areas, while they are more knowledgeable in others.

In other words there's no reason as to why we should not have gone through the forest.

There is barely anything at Horunka. Also we missed meeting Kirito on the first day. So Tolbana it is.

>we are only slightly more knowledgeable in some areas, while they are more knowledgeable in others.
Along with that knowledge also comes experience with dealing in the mobs. They're scrubs who've been grinding the weakshits near ToB and Horunka. There would still have been a risk had we cut through the forest towards Tolbana and encountered the mobs around there.
>>
>>36884589
>There is barely anything at Horunka.
Except the Anneal Blade quest, and since Tori uses 1-handed swords...
>>
>>36884593
Isn't it better to push through the forest, as they will level and gain experience with dealing in the mobs faster. Therefore, they would be more ready for the mob in Tolbana

Rolled 97 (1d100)

You camp out in the road, sitting up against a large rock. You set up a watch schedule, each person getting a shift of about two hours. You draw a short straw, and are on the 12-2 shift. You roll up in your cloak, after taking off your armor pieces. With a rolled up Dire Wolf pelt for a pillow, you bed down for the night. Tori unpacks a small box from her inventory, about the size of a cell phone. She presses a button, and a round tent grows out of the box.

The girls disappear into the tent, calling out a goodnight. You roll over onto your side, and quickly fall asleep. Like every night you've spent in SAO, you don't dream. You are woken by Tori, and you take up your position as the guard. The night passes uneventfully, you going back to sleep at 2:01.

The next day, you start down the road to Horunka. The land is more lush than before, plants fed by the mists from the lake. Smaller trees line the hills, green and sparkling with morning dew.

As you walk past a field of flowers, you trip against a dark green root. The fall costs you a single health point, a beep coming from your health bar. Five red cursers glow in your vision, circled around your two parties. You've structured the parties like in >>36884052 you switching between being the tank and a striker. It's important to let Machi learn how to tank for her party, even if she's been doing it for a few days.

Not knowing what is coming next, you call out to your friends. "Circle up, tanks at point. Machi, stay back a bit. I'm on point."

Everyone bunches up at the dirt road, Machi and Yuki on the opposite side of the circle from you. The root that tripped you slithers around, twisting around someone's ankle. Tori flies up, legfirst, being pulled by a thick green root. She waves her sword around blindly, holding her skirt closed with her off hand.

You bounce out of the circle, rushing toward the flying girl. You jump up, spinning around and swinging your blade. The blade glows orange and chops through the vine. A cry comes from behind you, and a curse when she lands in the flowers.

The red cursers rise up above giant plants with gaping green maws.

"Feed meee!" One of the monsters cries out, scuttling forward with it's mass of tentacles. It's vines whip out, slashing at you. You block one side of the assault with your new shield, then swing your axe up to cut the other two out of the air.

Your friends are being assaulted from four directions, by replicas of your adversary. They're holding their own against the plant monsters, Machi and Yuki swinging their heavy weapons at the monster's main bodies.

Rolled 39 (1d100)

You pull back your axe, the blade glowing gold as you start your Axe Spin. The skill takes over as you jump towards the monster. You start spinning, your blade cutting into the main body of the monster. It cuts three glowing white lines in the monster's mouth.

It flails it's vines, smacking the dirt into a cloud. You freeze for a moment, then activate another skill. Your axe pulls back into an Executioner's Strike, carving a line into the monster's face. It falls deep into the yellow, wailing from the pain. It springs forward on it's mass of vines, it's mouth spread open to swallow you whole.

You let it, the monster landing face first around your body. You activate an Axe Spin inside the monster, your attack hitting the monster. It disintegrates into light, and you step through the snowflakes.

You rush to rejoin your friends, who've been occupied defending against the storm of tentacles. Ten feet long, the monsters have a reach advantage against everyone on your team. Machi is at around 70% of her health, having taken much of the damage from the monsters. Yuki is even lower, her health in the yellow zone.

You detach a health potion from your belt, the thin chain breaking when you rip it off the belt. "Catch," You toss the bottle to Yuki, who fumbles for it with both hands occupied by her hammer. She backs up into the middle of the circle, and leans her hammer onto a shoulder. She rips the cork off the bottle with her teeth, and spits it onto the dirt road. She drinks down the red potion, her health slowly building back up while she waits.

"Mob the left one. Tanks face out, keep the other monsters away." Your party sprints forward towards the monster, encircling it quickly. You face outward with Yuki and Machi, your other teammates cutting into the monster. It swings it's tentacles at it's attackers, trying to break through your line. It holds, while two of the monsters attack you.

You block and absorb the monster's blows, swinging your axe at the monster's exploring tentacles. You take a blow to the shield, the tip curling around to pull it back. You let it pull you outside the circle, and activate your Axe Spin.

The blade cuts off five tentacles, the ropey green vines breaking into light. The two monsters dip lower in health, one in yellow and the other in red. Henry stabs his spear into the red plant monster, cutting up through it's jaw and into it's "head". It dissolves, as does the one inside the circle. You pull back into the circle, tanking the blows of one of the remaining two monsters.

Damage type: Single target
Damage per hit: 40 base/4 glancing
Freeze period: .1 seconds
Cooldown: 15 seconds

"Get close, finish off the monsters after I hit them." You call out to your party, and the lower level players come to the front to get the bonus XP. You step back, letting your friends take the monsters on while you get ready."NOW!"

You leap over your friends, shield held high. You land and start running at the monster, closing the distance in three steps. You jolt against the monster's side, the shield boss slamming into the monster's mouth. You follow it up with a strike from your axe, both weapons glowing purple before impact. The yellow monster reels back, struggling for balance on it's tentacle nubs and the remaining vines. Yuki charges forward at the downed monster, rattling as she smacks the monster into the ground three times.

No more.

That was your promise. No more deaths.

Never again.

You check your shield back, too early to use the same skill. Instead, you drop your shield in the flowers. Armed with your dwarven axe, you rush forward at the monster. Your teammates follow, screaming at the top of their lungs. You realize that you are also screaming, your weapon and hand glowing red.

You swing into the monster's body, chopping away at it's base. The health bar drops, and you notice your friends joining in.

Chris is alternating between a spin attack and his overhead strike on the monster, chopping away at it's woody body.
Emily is beneath the monster on her back, stabbing it's underbelly blindingly fast.
Henry is stabbing into the monster's mouth, trying to pry it open with his spear.
Machi is slamming the flanged mace into the upper jaw, digging a hole into the monster.
Tori is running circles around the monster, dragging her gladius through the monster.

You strike it a final time, the body beginning to dissolve. Chris takes a final blow with his claymore, the blade trailing silver light. The monster breaks apart, and something drops from it's mouth.

A white mass sits in the flurry of white flakes, a health bar with a single point left floating above it. You rip your healing potion from your belt, and go to remove the cork. Tori is too fast, and is already by her side with a healing crystal draining into Yuki. The health bar grows stronger, into the yellow, then the green. Yuki's white light fades away, replaced by her silver maile and copper hair. You drop to the ground in relief, releasing a breath you didn't know you were holding.

>>36887696
There's really no way to do that without becoming a scumbag red player though.
>>
>>36887700
But what if the RNG gods love him? He'll steal our quest and become the MC.
>>
>>36887667
>>36887696
So instead of the Midnight Black Cats grabbing him and dying due to incompetence, we nab him at the boss battle when he gets called out?
>>
>>36887696
Too out of character. Unless Kirito tried to attack us, we wouldn't kill him. We could still change the story by getting him into our group.

>>36887718

>>36887721
He doesn't even need to be called out. If we're involved, we could save that one guy that tried to take on the boss by himself and then prevent Kirito from going all DARK LONE WOLF mode.
>>
>>36887721
Let's be honest here, those guys are pretty retarded regardless. I mean, come on. Even if you don't play games, a chest just sitting there - in the middle of a large empty room - is pretty damn suspicious.

>>
Wait......Fuck unless we encounter Asuna somewhere else we're going to have to hold off on killing the boss.....Shit....
>>
>>36888862
>>36888894
One of the reasons I was against doing a co-op type quest. Conflicting schedules/update times. There's also plans of one quest being ruined by the actions of another. Both QMs would need to be working together to make sure nothing goes wrong and I doubt either could put in the effort because of school and work.

>>36889007
We're not really aiming to kill the boss right now. We're aiming more towards clearing a few floors. Considering it took them a month to find the boss room (and that was with dedicated raiding parties), I don't think we'll be going for the boss anytime soon. Well. Unless we roll a nat 100 or something.
>>
>>36889072
They found the boss room sooner than that, its just that without a large enough group to take on the boss, everyone was twiddling their thumbs until xp started to dropoff. Diavel had to organize everyone together, and i dont think they even reached the raid limit on players.
>>

After a short lunch, your party stands and starts down the road again. You set up the parties in a defensive formation, tanks on the outsides and lighter players in the centers. You end up marching in the front, with Machi and Henry on your sides.

As the day starts to dim, you reach Horunka lake. The setting sun glitters against the crystal waters, turning them to liquid fire. On the lake is a massive island, a few streams of smoke rising up from the other side of the island. Ducks and other waterfowl swim in the water, dipping into the water near the reeds. A wooden pier extends twenty feet into the lake, warped by time and exposure to constant moisture. There's no boat, and you can;t see any way to get across the water. You could swim, as it doesn't look too far.
>What Do?
>>
>>36895074
Try to find a boat or a ford, armor is heavy and some of us may drown or get mobbed in the water.

>>
>>36895074

Search the lake sure, also look into the lake to see if someone else has the boat out. Check for a crossing of some sort, or just circle it.

No reason to swim, armor is heavy and fighting i water sucks.

If you can see the boat, see if they are coming or going.
>>
>>36895074
Go for a swim
>>
You walk onto the pier, looking for anything like a boat. A note on a cork board says that the boat travels in a loop around the lake, stopping at the pier every three hours. It's past the ferry's run time, the boat shutting down and staying at the island for the night.

Looks like you don't have anything to do until the boat comes in the morning. A small chest sits at the base of the post, open to the public.

You pull the chest open, and get a notification.
>+7 Fishing Rods

You send one to each person in your party, then pull it from your inventory. It's basically a stick, with a small leaf on a twig halfway up the rod. A small piece of string hangs off it, weighted down by a simple fish hook.

The girls unpack their yurt, and pull their rods out as well. They look at their new rods, testing the springiness of the rods.

You look down at the rod, then back at the water, then back at the rod. When in Rome and all that.

You drop the line in the water, and switch off your Howl skill. You replace it with Fishing, and dip the unbaited hook in the water. Almost instantly, something bites onto the line. You rip the hook up, pulling a small fish from the lake. The fish didn't catch onto the hook enough, and your strength pulls the rod back insanely fast. The fish flies up and off your rod, arching into the sky. It plops down onto the yurt, flopping on the felt ceiling. You rush over to it as the girls inside shriek, and grab hold onto the fish.

It's blue, with fainter blue on it's belly. It appears in your inventory, leaving the physical realm. Your friends put their lines in soon after, and pull fish from the lake. You grab a torch from your inventory, dropping it in a pile of small branches and dry reeds. It burns with a bright flame, the cattails popping and throwing their fluff into the fire. Burning cinders drift up to the sky, floating up and over the lake.

You drop your fish in the fire after gutting it and descaling it with your axe, leveling up your Cooking skill as you make the fish ready for consumption. It darkens and browns in the flames, giving off a wonderful smell of fried fish. Your friends drop their catches in a pile next to the fire and you prep them for the fire.

Everyone takes their fish, pulling the flesh from the bones. You sit in the dirt around the fire, talking about nothing after the scare earlier today.

"Yeah, it's nice to be able to relax after having to fight." Tori says in English. She's messing with her lockpicks, picking a small padlock that she pulled from her inventory.

As the sun disappears and stars begin to form in the dark sky, you remember a song an army buddy would sing. He was Danish, and always talking about his old home in Denmark and the mythology. He's the one that really got you into Vikings, letting you test out his old axe during rec time.
"Eindeloze winter, de aarde zo koud
Onvree en oorlog zullen het einde baren
Broeders keren zich tegen elkaar
Geen mens zal de ander sparen

Hati verslindt de zon en Skalli de maan
Een diepe duisternis omsluit de werelden
De wolf breekt zijn ketenen en brult luidt
Zijn godenvader en het nagelschip naderen

"De zon wordt zwart
In zee zinkt de aarde
Uit de hemel vallen
Heldere sterren
Damp en vuur
Dringen dooreen

Heldere sterren
Damp en vuur
Dringen dooreen
Hoog tot de hemel
Stijgt een hete vlam"

Levenslot, portret van het einde
Eenzaamheid en razernij
Ondergang der Goden
De aarde brand
Einde en het Begin
Een nieuwe zon verreist
Goden herleven
De aarde bloeit weder"

"Where'd you learn that song?" Henry finally says.
"Just something from bootcamp that a friend taught me. This kinda reminded me of him."
"So, what's it mean? The NerveGear translated it, but I've never heard about some of those things." Machi asks, her copper scales taken off to reveal her green clothes.
"Just something from myths." You sit in silence as your friends assault you with questions. You try to answer them, but many are about things you don't know the answer to.

Finally, the fire starts to die down to embers. You throw dirt onto them to bank the fire, hoping to keep the fire alive till tomorrow. The three girls stand and pull the flap of their yurt open.
"You guys want to come in? Theres plenty of room inside the tent." The blue haired Machi calls from the felt tent.

They are going to eventually realize we are likely one of the nicest scary guys there is out here in SAO.

They will realize how true the George Orwell quote is in this new SAO world eventually.

It really should be the Einherjar though, they're the fallen warriors taken to Valhalla to prepare for battle when Ragnarok comes, and it fits our intention to be there at the very end, fighting against whatever monstrosities Kayaba has to throw at us, and the bastard himself.

"Sure, give me a minute to grab something." You say, a voice among many from your original party.while they head into the yurt, you step off to the side of the lake. You look over at the horizon, the world ending in an arch. What ever happens, you have to remember that this world isn't real. Everything you touch or do here is just ones and zeros, tricking your brain.

You walk back into the camp, ducking into the felt tent. Beds line half the walls, the rest of the tent empty except three wooden chests. You already took off your Jewel Cuirass, placing it in your inventory. Wearing your beginning set of clothes and your wolfsbane cloak, you look around the yurt.

The three Japanese girls are sitting on top the blankets of three of the beds, occupying three of the five beds. You take off the cloak and place it up against one of the chests.

"I let my friend die"

Well, fuck. That killed the mood.

Everyone goes silent, your original teammates remembering their lost comrade. After that, theres no way to get back into the groove and relax. You lean up against the chest, and go to sleep in the crowded yurt.

The next day, you wake up and go outside to watch for the boat. You throw a line into the water, passing the time while you wait for the boat. At 9:00, you board a small ferry that sits low on the water. A trio of NPCs work the rudder and oars, a short red haired man at the rudder.
"Well, looks like we have quite a job cut out for us, eh boys?" The two oarsmen have the look of the captain, likely his sons. "Come aboard, why don't you. We have a schedule to keep."

You pile onto the ferry, traveling across the water towards the island. An hour later, you step out onto the island's pier.

>Honestly, that death was unplanned. The nat100 did him in.

We were still way too reckless.

It is the type of things that a bunch of noobs do. We instinctively back off, as we have combat sense beaten into us by our Drill Instructor.

We should of had everyone back off when we knew that hundred was there. Then we might of been better off.

I wonder if there is such a thing as out of combat training, or it has an effect here? I know RL it does, but I am not familiar with the SAO world, so I can't say.
>>
You step off of the wooden ferry onto the oaken pier, and re-equip your armor. You took it off, just in case the boat sank or you fell off the side. Your party climbs onto the pier and you walk down it to a forest path.

You walk along the sun-spotted path, the many leaves filtering the light. The green light reflects off your exposed armor, which changes between green and red as you move. The conversation drifts as to what you're gonna do while your here.

"We should get some quests here. That way, we can grind and get extra cash."
"Sounds good. I heard there was a quest here for a special weapon." Tori says. She's been quiet, absorbing the constant ribbing of Henry.

You come to a stop at the city's gate, waiting for the NPCs to open the gate. You step onto the cobbled street, looking around for NPCs that could give out quests.
>Where do you want to go?

No, probably not. It was a crit, there were a few strong enemies, we were already in the middle of combat. If we had backed off before we even started fighting then yeah, we probably would've been better off.

The blade looks like it is not unique, however the issue is the rare spawn to get it.

Is it worth trying to get it, or just moving on from there?

Reminds me of some of the stupid camps needed to get quest items in Everquest.

Especially when some of them of them were not worth the time, that could be more effectively used elsewhere.
>>

>>
>>36898488
Then why the fuck haven't we done that so far in any of the other towns? The reason that you want to check the houses for quests is because you fucking know the Anneal Blade quest is in one of them. You're using meta knowledge. If you can't understand that then I have no idea what to do to make it more clear.
>>
You start canvasing the town for quests, noting the number of players that are in town. These so many, seems like other people are planning to get quests here. From your time playing video games, you can remember that bars and inns are the best places to get quests.

You follow the roads to a smaller inn, built between two a butcher's and a library. You enter through the two doors, pushing past a pair of guys. At the bar, is an older NPC with a ring of white hair set around his ears.
"What can I for for ya. Looking for some drinks, or maybe a late breakfast?"
"Actually, we're looking for work if you have any."
"Can't say I need anything. I get most of my supplies from the ferry or the butcher next door. You could check with him, if you're determined to make some money. The blacksmith is looking for an apprentice too, he lives down by the cove.

>Then why the fuck haven't we done that so far in any of the other towns?
Because we were just looking for cor and XP, and there are plenty of quests with that in plain sight. Quests that offer rarer rewards, like a nice weapon, will naturally have questgivers in out-of-the-way locations, so we're gonna have to look in locations other than the inn and shops, like houses that otherwise would have nothing for a player.
You don't have to be a metagamer to think that quests with rare rewards are found in less-than-obvious locations.
>>
>>36898750
>Because we were just looking for cor and XP, and there are plenty of quests with that in plain sight
No we weren't at all. We only said that we were looking for quests. We obviously weren't just looking for Cor and XP when we went for the Special Armor rewards over the Cor for most of our quests.

>You don't have to be a metagamer to think that quests with rare rewards are found in less-than-obvious locations.
I never said that you do. You just don't normally enter a town for the first time and immediately think to search the houses for quests rather than the more obvious locations like the inn/bar. This is especially more so when we haven't done that for the other towns.
>>
You thank the NPC, then leave the inn. Outside, you look over to Chris. "Hey Chris, wanna head down to the blacksmith with me? You already have the appraisal skill, and I was thinking about learning how to smith."
"Yeah, sure. I was planning to learn a skill so I didn't have to spend all my time at dungeons."

"While you guys go to the blacksmith's, we'll go check out the butcher's for a quest. Meet back here tonight or when you finish the quests." Henry says, then leads the four girls into the butcher shop.

You and Chris walk down the hill, taking a couple turns as you walk towards the cove. A ringing of an anvil echos across the road, coming from inside a stone building that puffs out black smoke from three chimneys. You walk into the smithy, and knock your fist against the door.

A golden head pokes out from the back room, streaks of soot maring the man's tan face. "What can I help you with?"

You look over at your tall friend, then speak in unison. "Consider us ore-ready on it."
"Haha, I'll add that one to my list of blacksmithing puns. Come with me." The man shrug off his smock, and equips a set of heavy metal armor. A short sword and tower shield materialize, hanging on leather straps. "I'm Lee, by the way.

You follow the armored man out the back of his shop, stepping out onto a small stone pier. A barge floats next to it, with two oars on a rack. The man hops down a foot to the barge, and motions for you to take up an oar.

You start stroking in time with Chris, heading around the island. A cave has been worn into a cliff, a small entrance rimmed with stalactites. The NPC steers the ship into the cave, passing between two stone spikes that look like fangs.

The boat grinds to a stop on a black sand beach, gravel shifting away from the flat bottom boat. "Come with me, the mine is just a few turns away. Look out though, this place is a breeding ground for kobolds. They just love the cave for some reason." The armored blacksmith says.

You follow the blond man, taking two turns through the bioluminescent spotted cave. It branches off at one of the curves, leading deeper into the system of caves. A pick axe slams into the blacksmith's shield.

This kobold is fucked

And why does this quest get so many nat100s?

In the cramped quarters of the tunnel, heavy armor and shields are king.

You shove past Chris, setting up a small shield wall with Lee. With the two shields, the whole tunnel is barricaded with wood and steel. The pickax blade chops down at your shield, hooking over your shield rim. The four foot monster pulls the ax back with two hands, taking a stab wound in the side from Lee's short sword.

Pulled out of the wall, you follow the monster's weapon and slam into it's chest. It flies back into the wall, it's health shooting into the red. You swing the blade down on the fallen monster, cutting from neck to naval. It breaks apart, the monster lighting up the tunnel.

A pair of the little cunts run out of the tunnel walls, their tunnels hidden by curves in the cave. You shield bash one upside the face, the iron rim cutting through the monster through pure force. Missing it's snout, the monster starts to run away. You sprint forward, diving shield first at it. The monster falls to the ground, your heavy body holding it's legs down. You chop into it's back, cutting into the monster's line of spikes.

Behind you, another kobold breaks apart from Lee and Chris's assault.

Referring to the long reach of the spear. It's a small, cramped place. Henry won't have the right space to turn his spear around. In other words, he's stuck facing a single direction and if his spear gets knocked aside, he's fucked. At least with an axe, if your weapon gets knocked aside, you can jump back with a dodge and swing again.

And he can't just shift his grip higher up on the shaft, effectively shortening the spear because?
>At least with an axe, if your weapon gets knocked aside, you can jump back with a dodge and swing again.
Except for the fact that a cramped space like a cave doesn't give you much room for a swing, significantly limiting its ability to damage and making the axe less useful than a spear in this situation.
>>
>>36900338
>And he can't just shift his grip higher up on the shaft, effectively shortening the spear because?
He'd still be stuck facing a single direction because shifting his grip higher doesn't magically make the rest of the shaft disappear. Not only that, but why bother with a spear anyway if you're just gonna shorten the reach?

You let Lee take the lead again, following the NPC through the caves. The glowing moss covers muck of the walls, splotches glowing different shades of blue and green.

The tunnel splits three more times, and passes through five caverns that have been stripped of any ore. The ceilings have masses of the glowing moss covering from one end to another side.

You stop as your NPC guide holds up his forearm. He swipes it down and pulls three pickaxes from his inventory.
"Now, please mine as much as you can carry. The ore has a golden color, but most of that'll be removed in the refining process." The NPC points his pick at some golden lumps, veins of the ore.

You walk over to the golden ore, and swing the pointed end of the axe into the thickest vein. With each strike, a notification pops up saying you mined a piece of the ore. Dwarvium, the golden ore, slowly depletes as you mine it. When you finish mining, ten minutes after starting, your inventory is full with the ore.
Once Lee and Chris have finished their deposits, Lee takes the lead once more. He walks down tunnel, scraping his hand against the wall. You take a second to pull away a piece of moss from the monster's tunnel, making an arrow pointing at it so you can find it again.

"Umm, do you guys remember which way we went?" The NPC says, scratching the back of his neck. "I just inherited my shop from my uncle and moved here. He gave me a map, but I lost it in the fight.

But it does shorten the distance between the spearhead and his hand, which is what I meant by "effectively shortening the spear", and would be helpful for in case an enemy gets within his normal reach.
>Not only that, but why bother with a spear anyway if you're just gonna shorten the reach?
Because you have an enemy within the normal reach of your spear and you don't have time to switch to a backup weapon, or because you don't have one, duh.
