“Ok” you say “But where are we going?”

“Out into the sands” he says flatly

You swallow nervously “people die out there” you point out “just saying”

“I know” he says “but that’s where the facility is buried.”

“What facility?” you ask

“You’ll see when we get there” he adds quietly under his breath “maybe.”

The next morning, as agreed, you ask a duster you know to carry a message to your employer saying you’re sick and then you and Charun set off in his truck, out from Dust Town, into the sands...

A good chunk of the land around the hives is dead sand. Things disappear out here from time to time, entire convoys of trucks for instance, which is why Charuns plan to rip of the shipment isn’t completely crazy, but still, as you head out into the sands, you wonder what’s going on.

Charun ignores most of your questions and after a while you stop asking. You drum your fingers on the armrest, restless and antsy, seeing Ash again bought back all the old cravings you thought you had gotten rid of. Not gone, just buried you think ruefully. You fall into a daydream, remembering his hands on you, the electric thrill that shot through you when he bit you, the feeling of your life flowing into him...

All around you is featureless sand dunes, until you approach a giant metal structure that almost looks like an animal skull, lying on its side, its clear that Charun is driving past it rather than up to it, but he keeps shooting glances its way, as if afraid of it.

“That” you say, pointing to the metal structure.

Chrun is silent until it’s behind you in the distance “It’s haunted” he says “It’s best not to talk about it.”

“It’s all the way back there” you point over your shoulder “C’mon Charun, we’ve been driving for 3 hours and you’ve barely said a word, fucking humour me.”

“Apollyon was an industrial world” he starts, you roll your eyes “I know” you say.

“You don’t know!” he snaps “We were funded by the Nobilae, we were supposed to build their weapons, the great machines – vast titans of destruction that strode the world, spreading death in their wake. That was the remains of one. Only a few had been completed before They attacked” he says, his hands gripping the wheel tightly “I’m told that one had a name in an old language that mean *Swift Hunter* and that it and all its crew died fighting the invaders, and that its crew still haunt the head, all that was left of one of the Great Engines.”

“So why not just say so?” you ask.

“Respect for the dead girlie” says Charun “and maybe a little bit of fear, just in case the ghosts aren’t too particular about who they feast on.”

He pulls the truck to a stop between two sand dunes and gets out “Wait here” he says.

“Where are you going?” you ask, he points to a wooden post stuck into the sand, it has a drawing on it, but it’s too distant to make it out “Lago territory” he says “I need to make an offering for safe passage.” He walks off amid the dunes, he walks strangely, not normally, he takes a few steps, then hops, then shuffles forwards, then sprints three steps, then steps very carefully and slowly, varying his steps all the time. A signal? Something to confuse predators maybe?

Screw waiting around, you’re feeling hit, twitchy and impatient and Charuns basically told you nothing.

You get out of the truck and slam the door angrily, you look around and then walk towards the sign, Charun is nowhere in sight. The sign appears to be a simple wooden plank driven into the sand with some sort of face drawn on it, inhuman looking with two long things coming out of its head, horns maybe?

Whatever caused the sand shifting is nowhere to be seen-

“Hands up!” growls a voice from behind you, you spin around quickly, cursing yourself for leaving your rifle in the truck.

You see a humanoid figure of some kind. It is taller than you by over a foot in height and appears a mixture of human and animal, one of the beastfolk – the soldiers of the fae!

Its dressed in sandy-colours wrappings and is pointing a spear at you, though humanoid in shape it resembles some horrific fusion of human and...rabbit? hare? Two long ears protrude from the top of its head and its muzzle is warped into a snarl.

It’s perhaps six feet away from you. The truck is a good thirty feet away.

“Hands up!” it insists again “State your business” It brandishes the spear at you.

I gotta say, it feels good.

It stalks towards you slowly and cautiously, as if expecting you to run or fight at any moment. Once it has reached you it thrusts the point of its spear at your stomach. For one heart-stopping moment you think it’s going to kill you, but it just keeps the point pressed into your midsection hard enough to notice, but not hard enough to draw blood. Then it leans in and sniffs at you.

“Hiver folk” it says in disgust, you don’t respond.

It sniffs your face “Poison?” it asks.

“Ah...” you say, not sure what it’s talking about.

It withdraws the spear from your midsection and spins it, the butt sweeping behind your leg, tripping you, you stumble back, unsteady but still on your feet. It looks surprised and then tries to repeat its attempt to knock you down.

“Now” you say “you can tell me what’s going on-”

“Shee!” bellows a voice, you turn to see Charun walking down a sand-dune, three more rabbit-folk in tow, one is moving slowly and has white-grey fur.

“I was defending myself” you protest as the white-grey rabbit-person engages in a furious argument with your attacker. It’s a higher pitched tone, and in a different language, but it seems your attacker is being berated. Finally he slumps, looking dejected. He looks at you “The elder says in punishment I am your servant for as long as you are in Lago territory.”

The elder snaps at him again, he winces adding “and for the next three months also, should you re-enter, I am also your servant, and that whilst I serve you, my name is to be” he chokes on this “Clumsy.”

“What is going on?” you ask Charun.

“I negotiated safe passage” he explains “for now, anyway”, he motions towards your attacker “stupid young buck wasn’t supposed to do anything but watch until after we finished talking.”

You shake your head “But the beast-folk serve...Them!” you say.

Charun shakes his head “Not the Lago, not anymore, they left service, it’s” he pauses “complicated, but for now, they won’t tell anyone we’re here.”

He wanders back to the truck and you all pile in, the four rabbit-people in the back, you and Charun in the front. “Servant?” you ask Charun.

“Just humour them” he says “They get jumpy if you don’t follow the rules.”

Charun drives for another hour or so, until you reach what appears to be a tiny bunker with a rusted metal door. He gets out and leads you all up to it. Three of the rabbit folk stay back, *Clumsy* sticks by you, though he keeps shooting looks back at the others, as if he’d rather be with them.

Charun motions towards a circular opening, just large enough to put a human hand in, there’s dried blood around the bottom of it.

Oh hell with it, you thrust your hand into the opening. Nothing happens for a few seconds then a needle pierces your wrist, you gasp sharply, partly in pain, and partly because that reminded you of the feeling of teeth biting into your wrist, his lips on your flesh, teasing, caressing...

You shake your head, a shiver running through your body. With a grinding noise, the door slides down slowly.

Charuns heads in, looking almost eager. You head after, and Clumsy follow reluctantly, whining and trying to make himself look small, his ears and fur flattened down. There’s not much here, just a lift. Charun leads you all onto it and thumps a button, with a grinding noise it gets moving.

“What is this place?” you ask Charun as the lift descends.

“Psychic training grounds” he says enigmatically. When the lift finally ends its journey the doors open to reveal...a monster? Clumsy starts shrieking at the swirling mass of light and colour that you see is a broken hologram, then it resolves into a standard AI hologram, the professor model if you’re not mistaken. Clumsy stops screaming but still look terrified as it starts to speak.

“Gree-Greetings!” saus the AI “Psi-cand-cand-candidate Hyul. What is your name?”

“Shee” you say.

“Accessing records” it says “No reference for Shee Hyul found, creating new record, analysing genetic markers, Warning, full DNA analysis requires level 3 access.”

“Damn!” curses Charun as the AI continues “I am known as the Teacher, how may I assist you Shee Hyul?”

As Clumsy cowers against the wall, Charun says “Tell it to open the Activation Chamber.”

“Powering up blast doors” it says, and then a moment later adds “Activation Chamber open.”

“This way” says Charun, setting off walking quickly down a corridor, lights going on around him as he moves at a near jog. You and Clumsy keep pace. You’re in some sort of underground bunker, with faded metal walls. Charun seems to know his way around the place.

“Wait” you say “What’s going on-”

“This is!” proclaims Charun, stopping in front of an open doorway. You look inside to see a large room with a half-dozen glass and metal tubes standing upright, some half-filled with cloudy liquid. Each is easily big enough to fit a single human inside. There’s a lot of computer equipment around the place as well.

“The activation chamber!” says Charun “With this, we can awaken your powers fully.”

The Teacher hologram pops up again, startling you “The Chief Medical Technician recommends waiting at least 7 days between each use of the psychic enhancement chambers.”

“Details” says Charun, and then looks at you, “So which power do you want to activate first?”

You enter the room and examine the six chambers labelled: Clairsentience, Metapsionics, Psychokinesis, Psychometabolism, Psychoportation, Telepathy.

“I honestly don’t know” you say.

I would like to ask players opinions on the Addiction and Bite Addict Flaws, specifically, what in-game effects they will have.

I originally intended to not have specific rules, using them more as a roleplaying aid. However, I acknowledge that I have not been writing the effects of the flaws into the posts – no descriptions of cravings etc. I apologise for this and will endeavour to do so from now on.

What effects would players like to see from the 2 addictions?
- Penalties if not fed?
- Will rolls to avoid penalties?
- Will rolls to avoid feeding the habit if the opportunity arises?

I’m planning on hand-waving the Bite Addict flaw as being *dormant* due to 3 years of not feeding it as the reason it didn’t become a huge factor when out with the vamps, it will slowly awaken as you spend more time around vamps. I am of course open to suggestions.

I think these two are accurate - Penalties for not getting your fix sounds good. Be it drugs or the bite.

The will rolls to avoid penalties seems like just an advantage to ignore the flaws.

These two make the most sense. Will rols to avoid the penalties will jsut have people betting on a good roll, unless that roll has increasing penalties over time.

Also add a resoruce management mini-game to keep them in check? or something similar to Hellborn's Bloodlust.

The problem with not having any kind of mechanical enforcement of the flaws is, that people will then just ignore the flaws.
Since we don't feel the craving of the character, sometimes a willsave to avoid being distracted by the craving is necessary. And in particular circumstances, yes a roll should be made to see if we can avoid seeking someone out for or refusing a offered bite. Especially refusing a offered bite is something that should be accompanied with a willsave, because otherwise the flaw means nothing.
Its like V:TM, no one would complain about getting into frenzy when he fails his frenzy roll.
Thats why this exists, because losing agency of the character is a terrible prospect, and it incentives people, just as much as the character, to do things to avoid that.
Stay away from vampires, take drugs, if especially bad let a vampire friend feed on us.
The craving should never NOT be there. Just weaker in some circumstances.

If I did that I'd list some DCs of common situations so that players can clearly see the level of risk they are engaging in.

Example:

This too, with modifiers for having taken drugs or not. If people have a issue with player agency, then have it possible to still refuse after failing, just for massive penalties.

But the proposal seems reasonable, and especially combined with the idea of having penalties for not having taken drugs recently or having been fed on makes for a intuitive system, where, the more we are under mental stress, due to withdrawel, the penalties will make it harder for us to pass the DC.

Besides, it's definetly safer with him, and he cares for her. Trading that for any random vampire's fangs should have some emotional consequence as well, unless she's so far lost in the addiction, nothing else matters.

Sure, he is the safer choice, which is why resisting the urge is harder with him. But thats no reason to feel bad about letting another vampire feed on her. Especially not "regret and selfhate".

I would prefer the following dynamics for the addiction/fangbanger traits

>Players can always choose whether to indulge in drugs, but not indulging will cause penalties to dex, charisma and wisdom until we get some.

That's how I'd prefer it gets handled anyway. BTW I loved Paladin of Joy, Sireyi was a great character. I hope I get to like Shee the same, despite my abiding hatred of vampires.
