There is something to be said for a proper nest.
A proper home, really.

Comfort. Family. Simple, important things.

You wake, groggy and disoriented, covered in friends.
The curse of the eternally warm spider.

You. The eternally warm spider is you. You weren't cursed by anything. Or if you were, you aren't aware of it. And the rebirth thing definitely doesn't count, because all in all, this is pretty great.

You got a little off topic, there.
In any case, you are a few days into the woods, far from home, and up a tree. The sun is up and there's work to be done.
You've got a wolf to save.

>Sneak out. See if you can make breakfast.
>Start waking people up. Then demand they clean up. Somebody in this pile is starting to smell.
>A little bit more sleep wouldn't hurt. You're pushing yourself pretty hard.

So, seems breakfast is taken care of. We should bathe Sheszka carefully and check for swelling or bruising. Then we should make a paddlewheel for the boat. Two concentric circles plus a couple of simple joints and rectangles will make our labor 200% more efficient.
>>
>>36877728
Which would be nice, except we aren't an engineer and we don't have time to muck about.
>>
>>36877728

It's the same principle as a laser cutter, if we use wood. Lyra just has to super heat her finger and cut quickly to make rectangular holes for the blades just smaller than the blades themselves. A few thumps from a hammer, and you have a press fit mechanical device as the wood expands in socket.
>>
>>36877749
No, we're a giant spider that is exhausting herself dragging a barge the length of a river. Lyra has shown she can rapidly put together a wheel over an axis using spider silk before, with that asshole merchant looking for silk. And if it will save us much effort and thus time, I think it would be worthwhile giving it a go.

You've got webs to check and stuff to do.

And somebody smells.

You start to stand, carefully rolling people off you, out of the way. Carefully enough not to hurt people, anyway. You want them awake. Eyes start to crack open, people yawning, scratching, stretching.

Your friends dogpile out of the boat/nest, dropping down to the forest floor, and you follow them swiftly, pulling your transport loose from the tree and letting gravity help you down.

Your drowsy circle of friends has arrayed themselves at the bottom of the tree, waiting. You snap a firm nod at them.
"I will take care of breakfast, yes? And the rest of you-"
You can't help yourself, wrinkling your nose slightly.

"Please bathe. And help Sheszka, as well. Someone smells."
There's laughter, and more than a few people checking their on scent as you scuttle into the woods.

Your web has a trio of rabbits, and a pair of wolves to boot. One of them somehow managed to get itself stuck upside down.
You're not sure how that works, but providence is providence.
Let noone ever say that a giant spider turns down food they don't have to work for.

You pitch your catch over one shoulder and make for the river, setting a fire and starting the meat sizzling even before they've left the river behind.

They show up soon enough, hair damp and all smiles. Sheszka is even awake, though she's already been buried under a small pile of blankets.

With fat spitting from the swiftly roasted meat, you pull your catch from the fire and start passing it around- Between a pair of arachne, not to mention everyone else, it doesn't go far. At least Nin eats plants.

>>
Spending most of the day trying to make a paddle wheel, attach it to a boat not designed for a paddle wheel, then ironing our all the bugs that crop up will probably wast more time than it saves.

I vote we just continue dragging the boat. But this time, just walk along the bottom of the river or along the shore, instead of earthbending the riverbed to rise up and meet our feet. Much lerr tiring that way.

Along the shore wouldn't work, because then we drag the boat along the side of the river, and I don't think the river is shallow enough for us to walk on the bottom.

Using the paddle worked well.
>>
>>36877952
We can hold our breath for hours at a time, so it's a non issue just to walk below the surface.

We should be sure to give them a tug-line so they can get our attention if they need us.

We can hold our breath for hours while not actively doing anything else. Something tells me that strenuous physical activity is going to whittle that time down signficantly.

"The Boat"
>>
>>36877981
>Along the shore wouldn't work, because then we drag the boat along the side of the river,
It would work find. Someone just needs to work the rudder. Horse drawn barges are a thing IRL.

>I don't think the river is shallow enough for us to walk on the bottom.
Air is optional for us. We can walk under water just fine.
>>
>>36877997
Wouldn't walking along underwater be counter-intuitive? I mean, it's hard enough walking underwater as it is, but it's also a flowing river.
>>
>>36878019
So, we come up for air once or twice an hour. I don't see that cutting into our schedule too much.

>>
>>36878037

Got it.
Writing!
>>
>>36878070
Actually, just one. They were typically used for pulling boats through canals, but it doesn't seem illogical to have it pulled for further than that.
>>
>>36878053
It's hard for humans to walk under water. Buoyancy makes us float, lack of traction plus 4 times the resistance of air.

An Arachne wouldn't have those problems.
>>
>>36877869
>Check in with Sheszka before she passes out again.
>>
>>36878070
Usually just one horse. Just need to keep the rudder at an angle away from the river bank. It takes no more effort than steering it in a straight line.
>>
>>36878070

Sara drags one end, Lyra drags the other. Terrain isn't an issue (which was the Achilles heel of the horse drawn boat). Both are heavier than the combined weight of the craft. Science anon here, with a recalculated weight of some 300 kg for our not so little sister.

Static friction on the water is low, the depth set lower for the remaining cargo, and while a paddlewheel would be cool, the drive mechanism is too complicated to be done on the fly. Sorry for suggesting it. We lost that opportunity when I missed that thread and we left town.

>>
>>36878276
We'd have to have some kind of steering. If not a rudder (which I think we do), then some sort of pole.
>>
>>36878305
We will wake up covered in tiny Lima's who worship us as their goddess who provides warmth in the winter. Without us so many would have died in the snow. But now.. they have shelter in the harsh months.

Wait, I just realized something. The healers we're looking for, right? We're totally going to end up adopting one into our growing pack, aren't we.

The tiniest. They shall wrap themselves around our spider butt and the harpy, moth, and wolf will have to fight for their right of habitation.
>>
>>36878276

I don't believe a rudder would work, nor is it necessary with two giant spiders handy. Suffice to say torquing from the backend might just spin the boat. The opposing moment generates a force in the wrong direction (toward the bank).

If there is historical precedent to the contrary, please try to find a picture. I am not infallible by any stretch of the imagination.

>>36878417

I concede my mistake here, though I also admit I don't know how these forces work out to equilibrium perpendicular to the bank. Oh well, always something new to learn

Still think if we have the extra spider power, we should use it. That goes double if we don't have a rudder.
>>
>>36878604
Thing is, we can put both spiders on the same side of the bank and then have Lann on the rudder, that will make it easier as we can trade of with Sara as our slightly less giant spider of a sister gets tired.

You see how the boat is always angled away from the bank with the horse on it? That's how it works.
>>
>>36878604
Since the horse in the video was clearly under no strain, having a second Arachne would probably be redundant.

Letting her stay rested should we need her to start throwing miniature suns around might be a better idea.
>>
>>36878604
Well I don't know, do we have a rudder?
I would think they eschewed it for the sake of getting the boat done faster, but, I dunno.
We should however not rely on Sara for dragging, she is not nearly as strong as we are, so it would be a lot slower, and she probably can't keep doing it for a entire day. So just paddling or using a pole might work better.

Okay, now I get it. The angle offset produces a counter torque about the then exposed hull being placed against the flow. You increase drag this way, but you also produce a counter force and counter torque.

You rearrange yourself, planting your spider half between your sister and your wolf, leaning over the furry bundle.
Sheszka looks up at you from a gap in the sheets, one ear popping free from the confines of the blankets as she waits for you to speak.

You reach out, placing one hand delicately on her forehead, and she closes her eyes slowly, letting a smile curl over her lips.
Still hot. Too hot.

"How are you feeling?"
She opens her eyes again, turning her head so your hand catches her ear. You acquiesce, scratching gently and waiting for her answer.

"Hot. Tired. Slow. Everything feels slow."
"Mmm. Not dizzy?"
"If I go too fast."
"Then you can stay down, yes."

She nods, slowly, and you pry her out of the blankets, increasing the temperature around you for a moment.
Nothing swelling, no sores. Whether that's because your friends are careful, or Sheszka's superhuman toughness doesn't really matter. You wrap her back up, running your hands through her hair till she slips back into sleep.

It's one less worry, at least.

You've got the boat mostly into the water- and full of idiots- when Lann speaks up.
"What did you name the boat, anyway?"
"Hah?"
She raps her knuckles off the hull.
"The boat. Ship, whatever. It's yours, right? What did you name it?"

"The people say they have to crispen the boats, yes."
"Christen, Jin."
The harpy shrugs at Lann.

They both look back to you.
"It needs a name, then."
"Before it sinks, yes?"
"Fine, fine. I know when I am outnumbered, yes?"

"Lyra, can you not count?"
"Wha- What is that supposed to mean?"
"You have been outnumbered many times, yes? Wolves and kobolds and-"
"Jin."
"-lizards and-"
"Jin!"
"Yes?"

You rack your mind for something to throw her off course. Before she takes another figure of speech literally, preferably."
"Do you have a suggestion, yes? For the boat?"

She spreads her wings, looking down at the wood clenched in her talons.
"...Brightstar."
"Brightstar?"
"I like stars."

"Should I name it furnace then? Or forge?"
"I am not obsessed!"
You laugh as your friends look on in confusion, and Sara cuts in.

"What do you think about comet, yes?"
"I think you two definitely belong in the same boat."

Anyway, Din was keeping track of his market in the city as it expanded. He has 3 guys working for him now with Mr. Atlas running security, he then decided to needed to tackle the Arachne Coffee it was. The city had not had caffeine before so it wasn't illegal and they advertised it in public as the wonder drink! And then the chief of police decided to try some. The chief is a giant spider. Hilarious hings happened The police force is majority Arachne and has a personal vendetta on the Mothia on behalf of their chief, fine times ahead

You shake your head with a sigh.
"The HMS Brightstar then, yes. Is that fine with the two of you?"

Sara and Jin look at each other suspiciously, but nod.
"What about me?"
"Nin, you are too spoiled by half."

The moth giggles, and you take the mooring ropes, slinging each over your shoulder.

The first piece of the mornings trip isn't nearly as easy as you'd like- You've made it to a hilly section of the forest. Which means that you're dragging five people and a boat uphill, against the current.

That's not to say that you can't, of course. You're fairly certain at this point you could hurl a car with the same kind of effort you used to use to make lunch.
It's just a pain in the ass.

Also, you probably shouldn't have thought about lunch. Now you're hungry.

You grumble a bit, slogging your way through the river. It isn't steep, but you're happy when you crest the hill nonetheless.
You can see mountains now, misty peaks towering over the forest below.
Maybe you should bug Mom for a map when you get back. There's more and more that you don't know.

The river current seems to be slowing, the banks widening as you head forwards. Gentle curves lead you through the woods as the trees grow larger by the hour. Even the ruins don't feel this... ancient. There's a stately slowness to nature here.

Even the birdcalls seem more respectful. Not that they are. You have yet to meet any respectful birds.
>>
>>36879832

You let your mind wander while your legs churn away.
Actually- How old is Jin's village? The forest doesn't seem particularly cleared, even around the logging village. Certainly clearer, but not to the point you'd expect.
Or maybe that's just modern sensibilities? It's not like they have chainsaws or anything.

Or maybe plants grow faster here? Or maybe-

The river widens far beyond the reaches of it's banks, opening to a clear pane of water that stretches are far as you see, the banks lined with trees greater than you've seen. Rushes buzz with insects- the only sound to be heard amongst the oppressive silence of the ancient woods.

You've reached the lakes.

Mom said there was a ring around the wendigo lands, right?
That they drove all the monsters out.

This really isn't the place to stop, is it?
You shake your head. You're tired, certainly. But there's nothing like fear to propel muscles just a little further.

You shift directions, guiding the boat to the shallows, and beginning your circle of the lake. You're closing in. Not there yet, but-
Its a step forwards. And another and another. The thought speeds you just a little further, brings a smile to your face.

And then your thoughts are sidetracked by a far more important- or at least demanding- organ.
Your stomach growls loudly enough to draw snickering from behind you. You can hear Lann trying to stifle her giggling, and you make a face.

"Jin?"
"Yes?"
"Can I have some fish, yes? I need a snack."
"Yes, you do."

There's a minute of shuffling while you scarf food down, tying the rope around you waist as you move.
Which is actually super-awkward, but you need both hands to eat this fast.

You leave a trail of demolished fish bodies in your wake, quickstepping to pick up the pace as you slip the ropes back into your hands.

The Sun is starting to set, dipping below the horizon (trees) casting long shadows over your surroundings (More trees). You can see the other side of the lake, but there's a very large difference between 'within sight' and 'within walking distance'.

And now you find yourself in dimming light, trapped between a rock and a hard place. Or a lake full of monsters and a forest full of monsters. Neither of which you're keen on dealing with.

The fading light is breaking the silence of forest- growls, howling, and other noises you can't quiet name are starting to echo.
Your friends are growing uneasy.

>Get yourselves up a tree. It's worked so far.

You're basically a professional boat/tree nest construction worker at this point.
And with an undercurrent of panic sweeping through the group, you push yourself that much harder, getting yourselves into the branches of a massive oak- well, it's probably not an oak. That's not the point, though.

The point is that you have a modicum of safety, as allowed by your height from the ground.

Your friends cuddle for heat, and you close your eyes, buying back what sleep you can.

______________________________________________________________

Tremors. The thick sounding snap of branches, rather than just twigs.

One eye flips slowly open, trying to focus as you wrestle your conciousness back from the abyss of sleep.
A glowing orb dominates your vision, and your eyes pry open one after another, staring into the light.

The orb blinks. Branches crunch beneath unseen weight.

You come awake all at once, your spear nearly appearing in your hands as you stand, rocking the boat side to side in your web. Your friends roll away from your rising form, knocking not too gently into wood and web alike.

The creature growls, pupil widening, and you answer in turn.

Hey REQM, I was looking at Lyra's levels and was wondering.

Did you ever decide what to do if we ended up over-leveling the limit before evolution?

And was that Hydra *really* worth only 6 levels?

Granted, it was mostly Sara, but still, fuckin' Hydra.
>>
>>36882190
We are really high level right now.
6 levels was pretty appropriate for us.
We probably could have taken it solo with a few good rolls.
>>

>>36882190
Overleveling makes the next few easier to get- You leveled faster after your evolution because of it.

And lets be honest here- You probably could have soloed the hydra.
>>
>>36882211
Probably true, but we were standing right in front of its face and tanking the thing, while Sara stood in the back charging her Spirit Bomb for five episodes.

I mean, even Shezka got 9 for getting herself posioned.

This is so depressing.
>>
>>36882266
Since the protagonist is usually the one who charges the spirit bombs, does that mean we are a supporting character?
>>
>>36882266

I never said it was -depressing- mind you, but more or less sobering that such a -Mentally Formidable- Enemy was not only such a Weakshit that he only gave us SIX levels, but also ended up being the catalyst for SECOND QUEST HUB ADVENTURE GET.
>>
>>36882303
Of course we are.
We are that older sibling character whos shadow Aria has to overcome, and then travel the world searching for her after she disappeared, only to realise she was the Dark Lord all along.
>>
>>36882334
just wait until major encounters only give us one level.

Or HALF a level!
>>
>>36882357

And then once the battle is over and done Aria realizes that Lyra never actually wrought a shadow over her, it was all her own doing and Lyra encouraged her potential and growth.
>>
>>36882357
We'll redeem her by showing her the shiny rocks we were collecting for her on our journeys, for her collection.
>>
>>36882303
Nah, we're the one dragging everyone else into battles with superpowerful opponents we could probably solo, where they end up roughed up enough that we have to go on a quest to restore them.

We're Goku and Shezka is Krillin.
>>
>>36882412

Lyra is the Dark Lord in that scenario.

But I like the Pretty-Rock collecting for Aria, let's do that, forever.
>>
>>36882334
>>36882266
The big thing here is that you're an arachne.

Sheszka, and Jin as well, are both basically 1-2 tiers below you.
They'll get more exp from fighting the same things as you, because you're much stronger than they are.

Also, I never understood the spirit bomb thing.
I mean, I do now-
There's the whole narrative pressure as the cast falls one at a time to the big bad while they try and let the MC build up a super attack.

It always struck me as odd to have the MC sit out of the fights, is all.
>>
>>36882468

>>36882491

Anon, we are the Eldest Sibling.

>>
>>36882484
Shouldn't the power tier equalize as the races progress through evolutions, since everyone ends at mythical?

I'd kind of have assumed that after two evolutions they're not a whole effective tier behind anymore
>>
>>36882560
The implication seems to be, they don't.
Or maybe they do at mythical, but its very possible they never do.
Its probably just even more unheard of for something like a arachne to get that far compared to a harpy or moth.
>>
>>36882560
The last three will be where it really starts to close in.

It's not all their fault, anyway. Someone keeps getting blessings.
>>
>>36882560
